Since 2013┃SV5
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The year was 2013 and the young and charismatic Sebastian Vettel was dominating the racing scene with Red Bull Racing. Across the paddock, the talented and determined Y/N L/N was making waves as Ferrari's first female driver.
The connections between them was undeniable, both on and off the track. Amidst races with champagne-soaked podiums, Sebastian and Y/N found moments to exchange glances, winks, and playful smirks. Their chemistry was evident and the F1 fans couldn't help but speculate about the nature of their relationship.
As the 2013 season progressed, Sebastian claimed his fourth consecutive World Championship title, leaving fans in awe of his racing talent. Meanwhile, Y/N demonstrated her skills behind the wheel of the scarlet red Ferrari with the number 22, earning the respect and admiration of fans around the world, and especially of young girls dreaming of becoming like her. The two drivers continued their subtle flirtation.
A year later, in 2014, Y/N made history by taking the World Championship title, becoming the first female driver to achieve such a feat in Formula 1. The whispers among the fans grew louder and the media speculated about the connection between the two racing stars after the celebration shared between both drivers. Still, Sebastian and Y/N remained silent about their relationship, and continued to share glances and secret smiles just for themselves, telling the world they were ''just best friends''.
Fast forward to 2015 and the rumors remained the same or with more intensity. F1 fans began to suspect that there was more to the relationship between Sebastian Vettel and Y/N L/N than met the eye. The duo, however, chose to keep their personal lives private, maintaining an air of mystery around their connection. Although their physical behaviors gave them away.
Time passed, races were won and lost and the duo continued to shine in their respective teams, but always together on the track. By 2022, with four World Championships under his belt, Sebastian had joined Aston Martin, while three-time world champion Y/N had become a force to be reckoned with at Mercedes two years earlier.
Then came the unexpected announcement that shocked the F1 world. Seb and Y/N stated that they were expecting their first child and would retire from racing at the end of that season. The news was greeted with a mix of joy and sadness from their fellow drivers – the younger generation on the grid who had come to see them as their racing parents. Who were their greatest support on the track, giving them advices, raising their spirits and taking care of them as if they were their own blood childrens.
Charles, Max, Lando, George, Alex, Lance, Mick and other drivers expressed their excitement for their growing family, but couldn't hide a hint of sadness that their grid parents were leaving the racing world. The F1 community, which had witnessed the love story between Seb and Y/N over the years, sent them their sincere wishes for their new journey beyond the track.
''You two promise to come back sometime?'' Mick asked with watery eyes
''Of course Mick, we will never forget about our grid childrens'' Y/N responded with a warm smile

It's done! The outline for—
Tumblr media
—is below the cut. The goal of this project is to explore the following phenomena with as much context and nuance as I can manage, tracing our history over the past 15 years:
What about us, and what about Dan and Phil, drew in and continues to draw in a very specific audience. If they are a ranch metaphor, we are a pizza metaphor 🥗🍕🫶🏻
Why we were Like That™, by which I mean so parasocially invested in them that we became, at times, the most annoying people on the internet. Much of that reputation is undeserved, and the videos on the phandom to date have been strongly negative. So, uh, I guess I'm going to put my face on camera and (mostly) defend us.
Reblog, share in your Discord servers, reply, or send me messages/anon asks with feedback or resources if you have any! Especially if your experience being in this fandom community has been dramatically different from mine. There are TIT spoilers near the end of the outline, but I'm not tagging because certain individuals seem to be lurking over there. Thank you!
Chapters:
Tumblr media
Full outline:
introduction
cold open
felt personally attacked by jonathan haidt's last press tour
showed up to the phrenaissance 11 months late
had an unexpectedly strong response to their new content, needed to find out why
what the hell are we doing here?
- phenomenology (academics are professionally insufferable) - research question 1: what drew the audience in? - research question 2: why were we Like That™?
what we're NOT doing here
- a strict content analysis or "wow we sucked" video - providing sources for things best left uncirculated, thank you
reflexivity (personal biases)
- american zillennial in public health - in the youtube audience by spring 2010 - lurking in the phandom on tumblr 2013-2015, back* since 2019 - fan behavior i did and did not engage in
(----): truly necessary background information, i swear
(pop) cultural trends, tech, and their intersection
- nerd/geek identity and the first online weirdos - broadcast tv & the music industry vs the internet - defining "emo" - blogging & vlogging - early internet comedy
broader social/economic trends
- so the U.S. economy collapsed in 2007 - a decade that sucked except for rom-coms and square enix games - the flip/slide phone + digital camera + mp3 player loadout
(05-8): early youtube and early phil
youtube: a great video uploader without a clear purpose
the content on the website
- crossposts, corporations, and creative/social outlets - omg guys it's amazing phil - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: justin bieber
the audience of "early adopters"
contemporary social media sites and forums
(2009): origin story
a wild dan appears… in the comments
the global constant that is teenagers being messy online
daring my old school district to sue me
- "one town's war on gay teens" (literal rolling stone headline!) - epidemiology 101: rates of… ugh… "unaliving" oneself - ways kids cope when it seems no adults will help them
the earliest days of dan & phil
- hello internet + pinof - a chronically overexamined timeline - file deleted ---* so how big WAS the audience at the time? ---* acceptable funny/edgy language was just different
contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: lucas cruikshank
omg it's meeeeeee
- how amy & friends were using youtube - ways i was just destined to end up here - being in social environments with peers 3-6 years older
(2010): is it "twenty-ten" or "two thousand ten?"
youtube is a platform about to explode in popularity
- the algorithm before it was The Algorithm™, lost site features - let's take a trip through the wayback machine :3c - actual dan & phil content in 2010 - the green brothers found vidcon - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: darren criss
social media: also about to explode in popularity
- facebook was cool at the time, believe it or not - law of equivalent exchange: 2010 amy cringe compilation - the birth of instagram and pinterest - youtube slash livejournal (the first phanfics… sort of) - shockfic and its place in the overton window
the beginning of "the great rewiring" as haidt calls it
- ways social media is about to dramatically change - third spaces become online spaces - confounding variable: changing expectations of teens
(2011): the end of an era, the start of an age
a very long tangent on fandom and pop culture
cultural exchange
counterculture and teenagers as concepts
the first british invasion: the 1960s
- beatlemania and its descendents - moral panic about the virtue of tween/teen girls - tv/film/fashion trends being imported from the uk - in parallel, star trek births the modern fandom

(2012): why is anyone nostalgic for this
the transition from desktop to mobile
- massive growth in smartphone ownership 2011-2015 - things one might do on mobile one might not do on desktop - non-online ways smartphones changed being a youth™
what is tumblr and why is my child using it
- how the site is meant to work - fandom, memes, aesthetics, and SOME public figures - want to be anxious and depressed in peace? come to tumblr - this site seems a little……… gay ---* tumblr's very queer, very neurodiverse userbase ---* legacy media representation in 2012: bad! ---* actual academic research on tumblr users (yes, it exists) - the tumblr experience for non-native english speakers
amy becomes a vibrating mass of panic and paranoia

tatinof us and aus
- a proven new model for live show tours - show & documentary released to youtube red (now premium) - [sigh] the tour bus

hi i love your blog and the stuff you've shared has been really invaluable for me writing my dissertation right now! i was wondering if you've ever read anything interesting about police horses, or perhaps horses working for the state more generally? apologies if you've already made a post about this and i've missed it.
Nice. Don't know if your dissertation is specifically about horse histories; if so, then I'd imagine you already know much more than I do. So I don't know how much help I can be.
I've posted about the history of police horses in Australia before, which is just excerpts from Stephen Gapps and Mina Murray, in their "From colonial cavalry to mounted police: a short history of the Australian police horse" (The Conversation, 28 July 2021; "Horse Patrol" aka "Mounted Police" formally established 1825 after Wiradjuri war, used to round-up escaped laborers and attack Aboriginal communities as crucial force in colonial admin in 1830s culminating in Waterloo Creek Massacre.)
I've made some references to US participation in British campaigns of Boer War. (Apparently there was a micro-industry of the New Orleans port shipping 110,000 horses and 81,000 mules on 166 voyages via 65 British steamships for a cost of like hundreds of thousands USD per month for three years to help Britain.)
Similarly, Steve Hewitt and others write about Canadian mounted police and their role in national power in the Great Plains; twentieth-century counter-subversion; monitoring labor strikes and Indigenous/student dissent, etc.
"The Masculine Mountie: The Royal Canadian Mounted Police as a Male Institution, 1914-1939" (Hewitt, Journal of the Canadian Historical Association, 1996)
Riding to the Rescue: The Transformation of the RCMP in Alberta and Saskatchewan, 1914-1939 (Hewitt, 2006)
"Fashioning farmers: ideology, agricultural knowledge and the Manitoba farm movement, 1890-1925" (Hewitt, Journal of Canadian Studies, 1997)
"Canadianizing the West: The North-West Mounted Police as Agents of the National Policy, 1873-1905" (Mcleod, The Prairie West: Historical Readings, edited by Francis and Palmer, 1992)
---
Guessing you've already considered this, but a relevant thing I've read might be Breeds of Empire: The 'Invention' of the Horse in Southeast Asia and Southern Africa 1500-1950 (Greg Bankoff and Sandra Swart, 2007), about "the 'invention' of specific breeds of horse in the context of imperial design and colonial trade routes" and "the historiographical and methodological problems with writing a more species or horse-centric history." There was an earlier influential paper about imperial use of horses by Swart, ""The World the Horses Made": A South African Case Study of Writing Animals into Social History" (International Review of Social History 55:2, 2010).
Last year I read Bellweather Histories: Animals, Humans, and US Environments in Crisis (edited by Susan Nance and Jennifer Marks, 2023), and there was an interesting chapter on horses by Marks: "Chicago's 1872 Equine Influenza Epizootic and the Evolution of Urban Transit Technology."
---
Have you seen Jagjeet Lally's "Empires and Equines: The Horse in Art and Exchange in South Asia, ca. 1600-1850" (Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, 35:1, 2015)? It covers Mughal state power and aristocratic prestige as tied to horses, but also refers to the later utility of horseback mobility in East India Company and British power consolidation.
I used to be in a Central Asia-specific program-type thing and there was a long list of academic writing, most if it not in English, about horses as essential for statecraft in Mongol, Persian, Mughal, Chinese, and Ottoman contexts. So I know that there's a huge amount of writing on the subject, but I did not retain much of it. Jagjeet Lally's bibliography here is helpful. This also brings to mind Alan Mikhail's work The Animal in Ottoman Egypt (2013) and Under Osman's Tree: The Ottoman Empire, Egypt, and Environmental History (2017). Though horses aren't the main focus, they're essentially about "animal labor/capital."
---
I think I've seen that you've interacted with my old posts about Sujit Sivasundaram, Rohan Deb Roy, and Jonathan Saha on "interspecies empire"? Saha's most recent stuff includes writing in:
Biocultural Empire: New Histories of Imperial Lifeworlds (2024); Colonial Dimensions of the Global Wildlife Trade (2024); "A Historiography of Great Animal Massacres" (2024); "whiteness, masculinity, and ambivalent British Justice"; imperial use of elephants and "animal agency, undead capital, and imperial science" (2017); Subverting Empire: Deviance and Disorder in the British Colonial World (2015); imperial use of cattle and other livestock in "animals and the politics of colonial sensitibilites" (2015). Sivasundaram covers a lot of that (animality, criminality, imperial imaginaries) but also oceanic thinking.
---
Also thinking of:
The Horse in the City: Living Machines in the Nineteenth Century (Clay McShane and Joel A. Tarr, 2011)
And The Herds Shot Round the World: Native Breeds and the British Empire, 1800-1900 (Rebecca JH Woods, 2017). Though its not really about horses (mostly about sheep and cattle for dairy/meat).
---
But I know there are little niches:
(1) British frontier policing in Australia ("mounted patrols" in campaigns against Aboriginal peoples and keeping them on rangeland labor sites). (2) British metropolitan and urban settings (police horses in industrializing London, patrolling rural periphery during enclosure law era). (3) The settlement of the Great Plains of the US (especially origins of Rangers, the Fence Wars, and policing West Texas). (4) The Spanish colonization of Mexico and especially the Rio Grande Valley (horses in maintaining state power on the northern/desert frontiers; Spanish/Mexican states and Comanche/Apache mobility in southern Great Plains). (5) Argentina's state-building in the Chaco. (6) And then all of that material about Mughal, Mongol, Ottoman horses.
(Also, most recently, I did that annoying silly satirical retelling of horse-drawn sleighs as progenitor of vehicle and pedestrian laws in industrializing Amsterdam, and it alludes to how horse-drawn carriages were important affordances to wealthy aristocrats which shaped industrial urban space in Europe; I don't know much about it, but I know there's a fair amount of lit about both horses-as-vehicles and mounted police in early nineteenth-century Europe.)
Though I'm not really familiar with most of that. In trying to formulate thoughts about "carceral archipelagoes" and "frontiers," I've previously seen titles about the utility of telegraphs, railyards, and police for US power consolidation. But when horses/cattle get involved, I've been scared/disturbed by just how much of that literature seems to be directly produced by "police department museums," "police science" journals, or former police-superintendents-turned-pseudo-historians in their retirement years who study their own noble profession as a novel curiosity.
But I imagine you know better than me if this is true. So please put me back in my place if I've got the wrong impression!
It's my impression that, more recently, the advent of critical animal studies, multispecies ethnography, and critical geography has meant there's a lot of new stuff to check out.

Writing Notes: Dark Humor
Tumblr media
Dark or twisted humor is an acquired taste, as not everyone appreciates the taboo humor others find in disturbing subject matter. But, for people who experience stressful jobs or complicated family dynamics, dark humor often serves as an important protective mechanism.
This concept is exemplified by the ability of healthcare workers to employ dark humor as a way of coping with chronic job stress (e.g., Schulman-Green, 2003; Talbot & Lumden, 2000; Wanzer et al., 2005).
Importantly, gallows humor used in this way is not aggressive or hurtful to others. This idea is explained by Wanzer et al. (2005) in their aptly titled article If We Didn’t Use Humor, We’d Cry.
The authors note that nurses use humor to deal with specific situations such as daily medical routines, difficult patients/families, and even death. And while approaching such situations with humor may not make sense to others, humor helps nurses deal with their distress when encountering extremely difficult situations regularly (Wanzer et al., 2005).
Dark humor has also been found to enhance resilience during some of the most horrible events in human history.
For example, during the Holocaust, victims reported using humor in ghettos, concentration, and death camps to better cope with extreme trauma and adversity (Ostrower, 2015).
Ostrower (2015, p. 184) describes humor coping within this context as a defense mechanism that “under the nightmare circumstances of living in the ghettos and camps during the Holocaust, laughter was a form of rebellion against reality. Humor was the weapon of those whose lives were utterly in the hands of the executioners, those who were powerless to rebel or resist in any other way.”
Along with the Holocaust, dark humor has been used as a coping and survival mechanism across a broad range of life-threatening situations.
Gallows Humor - is, by definition, from the perspective of the victim or at least expressing empathy. If anyone else laughs at the victim or the author tries to make the situation funny, it's some other form of Black Comedy, hence the phrase "it's only gallows humor if you are on the gallows". This trope is generally when the joke itself or simple laughter allows you to deal with your problems.
The term itself refers to the wooden frame used to hang people from in Public Executions and it is still quite common to see creators make use of Gallows Humor in scenes between characters awaiting their hanging.
However the term has broadened to apply to the making light of any bleak, morose, or deadly occurrence.
This trope is when you are able to make the best of a bad situation - this is finding something funny even in Hell itself. "Laughter is the best medicine", says the age-old adage. Therefore, these tend to be stories that focus on a select group of individuals who are in recovery or surviving an ordeal. It is highly unlikely for a gag of the week format to be Gallows Humor. It is also likely that the main character suffers from depression and is cheering himself up.
Some Examples
I’d say at least I’m alive, but currently that’s one of my biggest problems.
"Stop telling the suicidal jokes." "Don't worry, suicide would be the last thing I'd do."
"When is the best time to commit suicide?" "Ate a glock in the morning."
"Suicide is not a joke, get help." "I can pay someone to shoot me."
When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car.
“I'm thinking about killing off the main character in this book I'm writing.” “What type of book is it?” “An autobiography.”
Someone asked me if I've ever tried to kill myself. I responded, "Absolutely. A few times actually. I'm just not very good at it."
There are going so many things through my head. Sadly none of it is a 9mm.
Forky in Toy Story 4 knows that he is indeed a piece of trash and constantly tries to throw himself in a garbage can.
This exchange in Romeo and Juliet after Mercutio has been (mortally) wounded in a duel: Romeo: Courage, man; the hurt cannot be much. Mercutio: No, 'tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a church-door; but 'tis enough, 'twill serve: ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man.

Is BL Being Overly Influenced by Modern Western Romance Tropes?
Short answer: No. anyways, in the following essay I will explain that James Cameron is a weeb...
(okay fine~~ lets actually do this)
TLDR: discussing what media globalization is, how fandom can distill it down to only American/European cinema, showcasing how a lot of current BL is influenced by countries within it's own proximity and NOT "the west" but each other, also James Cameron is still a weeb
I had seen a post that basically proposited that BL was being influenced by modern western romance tropes and had used things like omegaverse and mafia settings as an example. I found this, in a word, fucking annoying (oh, two words I guess) because it's micro-xenophobic to me.
It positions western - and really what we mean by this is American/European countries, we're not talking about South American countries are we? - cinema as the central breadbasket of all cinema in and of itself. Inherently, all following cinema must be in some way, shape, or form, influenced by American/European standards, and as such America/European countries are directly responsible for cinema everywhere else, and these places - namely non-white countries - do not influence each other, nor have their own histories in regards to storytelling or cinema and do not, in turn, also influence American/European film making either.
Now like, do I think all of that~~ is intentionally malicious thinking on behalf of folks in fandom? No, so chill out.
I do, however, think a lot of it is birthed from simple ignorance and growing up in an environment where ~The West~ is propagated to be central, individual, and exceptional as opposed to the monolith of "Asia" - by which we mean China, Korea, Japan don't we? How often in discussions of Asian countries is Iran, India, or Saudi Arabia brought up even tho they are all Asian countries? - or the monolith that is South America - in which some folks might believe regions like the Caribbean and/or Central America belong to, but nope there both North America.
Anyway, what we're talking about here is the concept of "media globalization":
"The production, distribution, and consumption of media products on a global scale, facilitating the exchange and diffusion of ideas cross-culturally." (source)
"The media industry is, in many ways, perfect for globalization, or the spread of global trade without regard for traditional political borders. [...] the low marginal costs of media mean that reaching a wider market creates much larger profit margins for media companies. [...] Media is largely a cultural product, and the transfer of such a product is likely to have an influence on the recipient’s culture." (source)
Typically when I see fandom discussing what falls under MG the topic is usually focused on how "the west" is influencing Thai/Korean/Chinese/Japanese media.
Enter, Pit Babe.
Surely Pit Babe was influenced by Supernatural right? Omegaverse is huge in the west - love it, hate it, meh it - it originated in the west - specifically via Supernatural after all.
Nah.
Omegaverse has been popular in Japan and China for almost a decade, if not longer. The earliest omegaverse manga I can think of is Pendulum: Juujin Omegaverse by Hana Hasumi which was released in 2015, almost a decade ago.
Tumblr media
(what if you added furries into omegaverse? WHAT IF?? - Japan)
There's countless popular omegaverse manga too, and the dynamics only moderately resemble the ones we're familiar with in the west. Juujin is part omegaverse and part furry/beastmen - the alphas are all beastmen the omegas are humans - while something like Ookami-kun Is Not Scary only slightly resembles omegaverse dynamics as a hybrid series - beastmen are really popular in Japan in part b/c of historical mythology (you see the combination of romantic Beastmen and Japanese culture & folklore in Mamoru Hosoda's work The Boy and the Beast and Wolf Children).
Megumi & Tsugumi (2018) is so popular they're an official English edition published by VIZ's imprint SuBlime and that's a straight up omegaverse story.
Tumblr media
(look at the omega symbol on the cover loud and proud baby)
So if Pit Babe was influenced by anything, it certainly wasn't "the west" it was Japan, Korea and China. Because those countries have a thriving omegaverse sub-genre going and have had such for 10 plus years now. Supernatural is popular in Japan, yes, and that may be where Japan and Japanese fans originally found omegaverse as a fictional sub-genre.
HOWEVER
Japanese fans took the sub-genre, bent it, played with it, and evolved it into their own thing. As such, other countries in their proximity, like Thailand, China, and Korea who read BL and GL manga, found it and were like "hey, we wanna play too!"
Tumblr media
(is that an omegaverse yuri novel I spy?? yes, yes it is)
When I watched the Red Peafowl trailer, it had more in common with Kinnporsche, History: Trapped, along with films and shows like: Jet Li's The Enforcer, and Fist of Legend, Donnie Yen's Flash Point, Raging Fire, and Kung Fu Jungle, Han Dong-wook's The Worst of Evil, Kim Jin-Min's My Name, Lee Chung-hyeon's The Ballerina, Baik's Believer & Believer 2, Yoshie Kaoruhara's KeixYaku, popular Don Lee films The Gangster, the Cop and the Devil and Unstoppable alongside BL manga like Honto Yajuu and Bi No Isu (probably one of the most well known yazuka manga to date).
youtube
youtube
youtube
Like, we're seeing a rise in mafia based BLs and people think that's because of "western influence" and not the absolute insane success of kinnporsche??? Especially in countries like China, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines and other Asian countries???
Mafia films and gang shows aren't even that popular here in America/Europe; don't get me wrong, they still get made and exist, but the last full length film was The Irishman which did not make it's budget back, and while Power is still on-going it's not a smash hit either. The heyday of Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Goodfellas, and Scarface are long gone. And if you've watched any those shows or films they have very little in common with Kei x Yaku, Kinnporsche, or Red Peafowl in tone, or style.
Tumblr media
(who knew martin just wanted to make his al pacino/robert de niro fanfic come to life all these years?)
Another example, The Sign, which is clearly taking inspiration from Chinese costume dramas: Ashes of Love, Fairy and Devil, White Snake (and it's many adaptions), Guardian, & Ying Yang Master Dream of Eternity. Alongside Hong Kong and Korean cop and romance shows like Tale of the Nine-Tailed, Hotel Del Luna, Director Who Buys Me Dinner, First Love, Again, and previously mentioned cop dramas.
youtube
youtube
youtube
Like, I know y'all don't think Twins is influenced by, what, American sports classic Angels in the Outfield?? Gridiron Gang?? Rocky?? Nah that shit is inspired by the popularity of sports manga like Haikyuu!!, Slam Dunk, Prince of Tennis (which even has a Chinese drama adaption), and the like. And also probably History 2, & Not Me but I'm like 87% sure Twins is just Haikyuu fanfic.
So like, does this mean that there's NO history in which American and European cinema influenced these countries? What, no, obviously that's not true, American/European totally have had media influence on countries like Korea, Japan, etc.
Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka considered "the father of manga" was inspired by Walt Disney's work on Bambi. Another more recent and prominent example is director Yeon Sang-ho and his film Train to Busan.
"And it was Snyder’s movie [Dawn of the Dead, 2004], not the 1978 original, that filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho recalled as his first encounter with the undead. “That was when I started my interest in zombies,” Yeon said, in an email interview through a translator from South Korea. Even today, he added, “it’s the most memorable and intense zombie movie I’ve ever seen.”" (source)
HOWEVER, the global influence doesn't stop there. It's not a one-way street. Yeon Sang-Ho was inspired by Zack Synder's Dawn of the Dead, a remake of George Romero's own work, but Yeon Sang-Ho's work has inspired countless Korean film makers to make their own zombie media; following Train to Busan there's been: Kingdom (2019 - current), All of Us Are Dead (2022), Zombie Detective (2020), Zombieverse (2023), Alive (2020), Rampant (2018).
And hey, wouldn't you know it now we're starting to see more zombie media coming out of places like Japan (Zom 100 the manga, movie, and anime) and High School of the Dead.
Do you know what Domundi's series Zombivor (2023, pilot trailer only) reminds me of? It's NOT The Walking Dead (which is the only relevant zombie media America has created in the last decade) it's Korea's All of Us Are Dead (2022). Comparing the trailers, the settings, the tone, it's clear where Zombivor is pulling inspiration from: Korean zombie cinema. NOT American zombie cinema.
youtube
youtube
youtube
In fact a lot of Domundi's shows - Cutie Pie, Middleman's Love, Naughty Babe, Bed Friend - are all very clearly inspired by Korean filmmaking, specifically that of romantic kdramas from the 2016 - 2020 era. Not always in story, but rather in technique.
This is media globalization. It's not simply ~The West~ influencing non-American/European countries but countries who are often more close in terms of: proximity, culture, and trade are going to have more influence on each other.
It is far more likely that Aoftion (Naughty Babe, Cutie Pie, Zombivor) was influenced by watching Train to Busan, All of Us Are Dead, and other Korean zombie shows and films than a single episode of Walking Dead.
My point isn't that this goes one way only, but rather it is very literally a global thing. This includes American and European film makers being influenced by non-American and European cinema.
Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan, the Wachowski sisters, George Lucas and James Cameron have all been influenced by Japanese film making, especially the works of Akira Kurosawa, Satoshi Kon, and Mamoru Oshii.
Tumblr media
John Wick's entire gun-fu sub-genre is heavily influenced by classic Hong Kong action films, specifically John Woo films. Legend of Korra, The Boondocks, Voltron, Young Justice, My Adventures with Superman are all obviously inspired by Japanese anime but animated by a Korean animation studio (Studio Mir). Beyond that, the rise in adult animated dramas like Castlevania, Critical Role Vox Machina, and Invincible to name a few are very clearly taking inspiration from anime in terms of style. The weebs that were watching Adult Swim's Inuyasha, Bleach, and Dragon Ball Z have grown up and are now working in Hollywood.
Okay so like, what's the point of all this? What's the issue? Since American/European cinema does influence et all cinema does any of this really matter?
YES.
I take contention with this line of thinking because it centers "the west" and our supposed individual importance way to much. Declaring definitively that "BL is being influenced by western tropes" and then including tropes, narratives, and film making styles that aren't inherently western and actually have major roots in the cinema of various Asian countries, removes the existence of individual history these countries have which are rich, varied, and nuanced. It removes the "global" part of globalization by declaring "the globe" is really just America and Europe.
It distills these countries down to static places that only exist when American/European audiences discover them.
BL doesn't exist in a vacuum you can trace the development of Korean BL to the development of Korean het dramas almost to a T. You can also trace their development to the queer history of each country and how Thailand interacts culturally with China, Japan, Korea, etc and vice versa. It also ignores the history of these countries influencing American cinema as well. Don't mistake "the globe" for only your sphere of experience.
Anyway James Cameron is a damn weeb y'all have a good night.

Calling Game of Thrones fans with knowledge of the fandom's history! [see also: Supernatural version]
I'm in the midst of putting together some fandom deep dives as part of my analysis of TV Fandom Fix-Its on AO3, including GoT. I'm trying to give context for how many fanworks the fandom was producing overall, and when overall spikes in fandom activity were happening, and I could use help.
Specifically, I'm trying to label AO3 activity spikes with what episodes/events seemed to contribute to them. But I'm probably missing important context. E.g., I know there were other events like fanwork exchanges happening that might have been contributors to some activity spikes, or things the show creators said/did might also have contributed sometimes.
If you have theories about why the red spikes between seasons happened near the following dates, that would be excellent:
Dec 28, 2020
May 11, 2020
Oct 5, 2015
Sept 29, 2014
July 21, 2014
And if you think I'm missing important context for some of the other spikes, or I made goofs on some of the labels, please LMK!
This was posted on April 10, 2024; I'm hoping for relevant replies in the next few days.
If you prefer to look at the raw data, it's too long to list here, but you can read it in this spreadsheet. And you can view the graph and labels bigger in this slide.
Thanks so much in advance!!
(If you have questions or critiques, please click through and read more context on AO3 or click through to the OP version of this post, which I will update with clarifications as needed.)

CHAPTER NINETEEN – 2018
Pete makes sure he’s home for it, wants to watch SpaceX launch its Falcon Heavy rocket with Ice, because while he loves flying he’s always been fascinated with space. Not that he ever wants to go there, but he definitely still wants to watch. Tamsin makes the trek home as well, is spouting off something about the coding and he exchanges a look with Ice, that moment of shared understanding that they’ve managed to raise three amazing people into adulthood. He knows Melissa and Sarah did most of the work, but he can’t help feeling honored just to have been included in the support network. To have his girls call him Papa and give him shit, for them both and Bradley join him in teasing Ice.
Tamsin passes up sitting with them on the sofa, instead insisting on the large single chair that Ducati and Ceccato tend to favor curling up on. Pete snorts, because sure enough they’re being passed over in favor of a couple of cats, one of whom curls up on Tamsin’s lap and the other which drapes itself over her shoulder like a type of scarf. He takes a picture and sends it to Petra, knows it will wind her up because her and Tamsin bicker over being the cats’ favorite human like it isn’t him. They all know it.
He knows Tom has been feeling more settled, the acquiring of the dog last year along with the kittens is something he’s taken in stride happily, rather than with a look of pinched resignation or tired acceptance. Pete’s also noticed that somedays his wedding ring is missing from the bowl, like Ice has either forgotten to take it off, which is unlikely, or he’s deliberately left it on and worn his wedding ring to the office for everyone to see. It sends a thrill of possessiveness through him at the idea, but it’s mixed with a healthy dose of anxiety over potential reprisals. Not for him, but for Ice and his career.
However, he’s certain Tom knows what he’s doing.
…         …         …
He ends up deployed and in the same squad as Jake. Makes a vow to himself to treat him like… well. He’s not quite sure. But between a skittish kitten and a friend. He keeps a tight rein on his temper and tongue, careful that any teasing words are purely superficial and don’t cut too deep or imply anything that could be taken the wrong way. He forces himself to not react when Jake is an asshole, makes cutting comments at his expense. The others in their squad raise eyebrows and Bradley simply shrugs. Water off a ducks back. They don’t ruffle his feathers. Of course it makes Jake look like even more of an asshole, but he can’t help that.
One liberty leave, a period so short there’s less than a day, the squad decide to stick together. Despite the uneasy truce that Bradley has declared in his own mind Jake watches him exactly like a wary cat would and Bradley can’t blame him. He continues trying his best to be friendly and polite. Like Jake is simply another squad member and someone he gets along with. Or a stranger he’s just met. Of course it’s not that simple, not with their history but still, he tries his best and the others can tell that the animosity is on Jake’s side, which also isn’t fair, but again, he can’t help that.
They all end up going to see Infinity War and he grabs an extra packet of peanut MnMs, presses them into Jake’s hand and then steps away. Doesn’t want to give him the wrong idea. He’d like them to at least be friendly with one another.
            “What the fuck Bradshaw?”
“Just… know they’re your favorite,” Bradley shrugs.
“Keep your fucking candy to yourself Bradshaw…”
As Jake shoves the bag of MnMs against his chest with far more force than necessary he gets more than one what the fuck look aimed his way and he just shakes his head minutely. Doesn’t want to cause drama, despite the fact that he seems to be doing that without even trying.
            He’s thirty-five.
He feels like he should have more of his shit sorted out by now.
…         …         …
He hears about the U.S. fighter jets intercepting Russian TU-95 bombers in Alaskan airspace and rubs at his temples, knows that is where Bradley currently is. The political climate causes him ongoing tension headaches and Melissa orders him in for a full medical, which show he’s developed stomach ulcers of all things. He’s given strict orders to reduce stress and he laughs without humor, because it’s part of the job. Then he finds out he’s being promoted and while his voice is cool and calm as he expresses his thanks for the honor his hands are shaking. He’s pretty sure this is going to be the opposite of reducing stress. He doesn’t particularly want to move to Pearl Harbor either.
As he watches the world political climate change, and news about the planet’s actual climate he wonders how other people cope. He’s glad he can talk aloud to Harley and pretend he’s simply talking to the dog as he expresses his concerns about his husband and his kids, Sarah and Melissa, the world in general because it’s fucking depressing and he’s not even allowed a drink because it’ll make his stomach ulcer flare up.
            Great.
…         …         …
When he gets the call that Petra is in hospital his world comes to a standstill. Ice has already organized transport for him, because as much as he would like to just get on his bike and drive it’s a bit far to fucking Daytona from North Island.
            A roller coaster.
Of all things he imagined getting called about, a roller coaster never made the list. She’s in Daytona for a fucking driving course and racing experience and instead she’s a victim in a rogue roller coaster derailment. She wasn’t even on the damned thing, simply a bystander and as Pete sits on the plane, leg jiggling with nerves, he tries to tell himself that she’s fine. Ice, Melissa and Sarah wouldn’t have let him come alone if she wasn’t. That’s what he repeats to himself while he waits for a ride to the hospital. He hasn’t even stopped to pack a bag.
He asks for directions and finds her room easily enough, pauses on the threshold as he takes her in, looking beaten up and a little pale, but otherwise whole. He lets out the breath he wasn’t even aware he was holding, thinks about the other times she’s hurt herself and fuck, he really needs to tell Ice how much he loves him. Knows he causes Ice this type of worry and stress too often and he should really try and cut back on that. He steps into the room and Petra’s eyes open to meet his and she gives him a weak smile.
            “Hi sweetheart…”
            “Hi Papa… thanks for coming.”
“Nothing could keep me away. Your mom is coming as well, but I don’t think Melissa has quite the same pull as Ice does when it comes to booking tickets.”
It’s not a funny joke, but it makes Petra laugh, although she immediately winces in pain and he flits from one side of the bed to the other, wonders if she should have more painkillers, or fluffed up pillows or… fuck. Melissa should be here. She’s the fucking doctor.
            “How is everyone else?”
            “What?”
“There were others there. Is everyone okay?”
“I… I don’t know. I’ll find out though okay. You just… worry about yourself right now okay?”
“Papa, I’m fine. Stop… stop worrying.”
“I… Petra. It’s literally in the job description.”
            “Captain Mitchell?”
            “Yes?”
“I… I’m sorry Captain. You don’t have authority to be in here. It’s next of kin only.”
            “He’s my father…”
“I’m… your father is listed as being Tom Kazansky.”
“Yeah. My dad. But this is my papa.”
“Tom Kazansky is my husband,” Pete offers.
“Oh,” the nurse says, lips twisting and Pete isn’t sure how to take it, is used to years of homophobia, of hiding his relationship. The fact that he’s not even wearing his wedding ring even now makes him feel vulnerable in a weird way, that he’s somehow lying.
“I’m over eighteen and can decide on my own visitors and care. And he’s my papa, he’s allowed to know everything,” Petra says, and Pete ducks his head at the jut of her jaw, the stubborn flare of anger in her eyes and her immediate defense of where he stands in her life. The nurse leaves and Pete guesses he’ll never know quite what they were thinking. Instead, he settles in the chair beside Petra to listen to her complain about hospital food and he guesses she must be feeling okay if that’s the worst thing she wants to complain about. He goes looking for news about the Sand Blaster roller coaster accident and is incredibly glad that he isn’t going to have to tell Petra that any of her friends have died. There are injuries, some bad, but no fatalities and he’s grateful for the fact.
            “Love you kid.”
            “Love you too Papa.”
…         …         …
Tom hates that his thoughts jump immediately to Maverick when he’s alerted to the Horizon Air Bombardier being stolen from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. He quickly dismisses the thought, knows Pete is in China Lake so it can’t be him. There are no passengers on board, so he makes the call to have some F15 fighter jets intercept. When the plane crashes and kills the 29-year-old male pilot he really wishes he could have a drink.
…         …         …
            Tamsin has an internship at NASA and her lips only twitch a little when she talks about the ICESAT-2. Bradley is the one to ask, because there’s clearly something funny she’s holding back. She’s announcing it with glee, that ICESAT-2 is the agency's most technologically advanced ice-monitoring spacecraft to date, and of course it makes the others laugh. Ice is less amused;
“Tell me when they develop one to monitor Maverick…”
Pete kicks him under the table.
…         …         …
“You’re wearing your wedding ring…” Bradley blurts out, noticing it as Ice reaches into the box of popcorn.
“Mmm,” Ice hums, staring at the ring on his finger and Bradley chews on his bottom lip, wants to ask why now because after thirty years surely it’s just a symbol.
            Oh fuck.
Of course it is and symbols are powerful and have meaning and not being able to wear it must have been… difficult. Painful. It’s never just been anything.
“Figured with my promotion there’s no reason to not wear it. I used to worry about making others uncomfortable. Now my rank makes people uncomfortable so I might as well give them another reason. It’s not my job to make people comfortable.”
Bradley snorts, because he’s seen the impact Ice has on a room full of people, even when he’s in civvies and going to the movies he walks as if he’s in command.
“Yeah, you scare most people shitless.”
            “So does Maverick,” Ice offers.
“For different reasons,” Bradley says with a laugh and Ice laughs with him. They quieten down as the trailers start playing and he knows Ice has already seen it with Mav when it came out a couple of weeks ago, but when he’d said he was going to the movies to watch it, happy to go alone, Ice had offered to come with him. He knows Ice prefers company, the house too quiet when they’re all away even with the cats and dog. He doesn’t stay with them anymore unless he’s drunk. His own place, his parents’ old house, is all set up to his liking, with two guest bedrooms that both Tamsin and Petra use regularly enough for him to bitch about their hair and toiletries clogging up the bathroom. Natasha also uses it frequently, and Bradley likes them all treating it as theirs.
The exit the movie and Bradley can understand why Ice was happy to go and see it again, he was already a fan of Queen, and knows creative licenses have probably been taken, but it was still damned entertaining, which he feels like is a good legacy of a movie.
            “Bradley… you’re being careful right?”
            “What?”
            “You’re being careful?”
“Yeah, I heard you. I just don’t know what you mean…”
“With sex. You aren’t… taking risks.”
“Oh. Fuck. No. Hell no. I mean… if I was in a committed relationship, but no, I’m careful. Also I don’t know if you missed it, but I’m thirty-five, I’m not exactly out every night getting my dick wet even when I’m not deployed.”
Ice looks a little pained, but he knows why Ice is asking, the movie didn’t shy away from the topic of AIDS or HIV but also he wonders if Ice is aware just how many sex talks he’s had to endure growing up with four parents. Melissa’s go-to has always been scare tactics.
“Ice… you know Melissa has given me the safe sex talk right? And Sarah?”
“Oh. Good. I know you’re sensible, but it’s easy to get complacent…”
“You don’t want to know about Mav’s sex talk?”
            “I… do I?”
“He shoved a bag filled with condoms and lube at me and told me he expected me to use them.”
            “Oh god…”
“Yep. Between you, Melissa and Natasha’s cousin I got all my answers and then some. I’m good. You guys did good.”
            “We tried.”

Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, both exceptional drivers in Formula 1, shared a complex and often contentious relationship during their time as teammates at Mercedes. Their rivalry reached a boiling point in 2016, culminating in Rosberg's unexpected retirement shortly after winning the World Championship. This essay will explore the dynamics of their relationship, the key events that led to their fallout, and the implications of their rivalry on the sport.
From the outset of their partnership in 2013, Rosberg and Hamilton were seen as two of the most talented drivers on the grid. Both had a history of success, with Hamilton already being a two-time World Champion and Rosberg eager to prove himself. Initially, their relationship appeared cordial, marked by mutual respect and a shared goal of helping Mercedes dominate Formula 1. However, as the team began to achieve unprecedented success, tensions began to simmer beneath the surface.
The 2014 season was pivotal, as Mercedes emerged as the dominant force in Formula 1. The internal competition between Rosberg and Hamilton intensified, with both drivers vying for supremacy. Their rivalry was exemplified in several races, most notably at the Belgian Grand Prix, where a collision between the two resulted in significant damage to Rosberg's car. This incident marked a turning point, as it became clear that their relationship was deteriorating.
As the 2015 season progressed, the animosity between the two drivers grew. Rosberg's frustration with Hamilton's perceived favoritism from the team and Hamilton's growing confidence led to a series of on-track clashes and off-track tensions. The public nature of their rivalry drew attention from fans and media alike, with each race becoming a battleground for their personal feud. The pressure of competing against each other, combined with the weight of expectations from Mercedes, exacerbated their already strained relationship.
The climax of their rivalry occurred during the 2016 season, which saw both drivers locked in a fierce battle for the championship. The tension reached new heights as they exchanged barbs in the media and engaged in aggressive driving tactics during races. The infamous clash at the Spanish Grand Prix, where both drivers collided and retired from the race, exemplified the extent of their rivalry and the stakes involved. This incident not only affected their points standings but also highlighted the growing animosity between them.
Despite the intense competition, Rosberg ultimately emerged victorious, clinching the 2016 World Championship. However, instead of celebrating his hard-fought title, he shocked the world by announcing his retirement just days later. Rosberg cited the immense pressure and strain of competing against Hamilton as a significant factor in his decision. His retirement marked the end of a tumultuous chapter in Formula 1 and left fans and pundits questioning the future of both drivers.
The fallout from their rivalry had lasting implications for the sport. Rosberg's retirement opened the door for new talent, while Hamilton continued to dominate, further solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history. The intense rivalry between Rosberg and Hamilton also sparked discussions about the impact of teammate dynamics on performance and the psychological toll of competition at the highest level.
In conclusion, the fallout between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton serves as a compelling narrative within the world of Formula 1. Their relationship, marked by both camaraderie and rivalry, ultimately culminated in a dramatic conclusion that reshaped the sport. As fans reflect on their time as teammates, it is clear that their rivalry not only defined their careers but also left an indelible mark on the history of Formula 1. The lessons learned from their tumultuous partnership continue to resonate, reminding us of the complexities of competition and the human emotions that drive it.

Samuel Paty, 47, was brutally stabbed and decapitated on October 16, 2020
The Muslim schoolgirl who accused her teacher of Islamophobia and began rumours that led to a jihadist decapitating him in the street in France has admitted lying and apologised to the victim's family in a remarkable court hearing today.
History and geography teacher Samuel Paty was murdered on October 16, 2020 by Abdoullakh Anzorov, an 18-year-old Islamist radical of Chechen origin.
Anzorov tracked down 47-year-old Paty and brutally hacked his head off after seeing pictures and videos of him circulated on social media as part of a ruthless campaign of harassment.
It began after the schoolgirl in question claimed that Paty had ordered Muslim students to leave his classroom while he showed the rest of the class caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad by satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.
But she revealed today that she had not even been present in the class and invented the lie, fearing repercussions from her parents after she was suspended two days for bad behaviour.
The student, who was 13 at the time of the murder and whose identity remains protected due to her age, cried as she addressed Paty's family.
'I know it's hard to hear, but I wanted to apologise... I wanted to apologise sincerely. I'm sorry for destroying your life,' she reportedly said through tears.
'I apologise for my lie that brought us all back here,' she added, admitting to those in attendance, including the accused: 'Without me, no one would be here.'
The schoolgirl's father, Brahim Chnina, is accused of launching the online harassment campaign against Paty, while other teen students were tried last year after they identified him for the attacker in exchange for a few hundred euros.
Anzorov, who had requested asylum in France and travelled more than 60 miles to cut down Paty in public, was killed by police shortly after the murder near the school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine west of Paris.

Paty is regarded as a free-speech hero by many in France.
He had shown the Charlie Hebdo caricatures to students as part of an ethics class in which his pupils were discussing the fallout of the 2015 terror attack on newspaper's offices in which 12 people were murdered by extremists.
But he had not ordered any students to leave the room, instead telling them what he was going to do as part of the ethics lesson before inviting them to turn away if they thought they would be offended by the caricatures.
Seven men and one woman are appearing at the Special Assize Court in Paris amid the trial over his murder, which is set to last until December 20.
Chnina is one of them, facing charges of association with a terrorist organisation for his alleged involvement in the online campaign targeting Paty.
Six students, including Chnina's daughter, were tried last year for their role in Paty's death.
The schoolgirl had accompanied her father to file a complaint at the time. 'I wanted to tell my parents that it was false, I knew that my father was not going to do anything to me , but I was afraid to say it,' she said in court today.
After Paty's murder, she was taken into police custody, during which time she continued to lie. 'My teacher had been decapitated, my father was in police custody, I couldn't say it was false,' she said.
She finally confessed the truth after 30 hours and two police interviews.
The schoolgirl received an 18-month suspended sentence for the slanderous allegations she made against Paty that ultimately proved the catalyst for his murder.
Her five co-defendants, all of whom were aged 14 or 15 at the time of the murder, faced charges of criminal conspiracy with the aim of preparing aggravated violence.
Four were handed suspended sentences but one received a six-month term with an electronic tag after being identified as the person who pointed Paty out to Anzorov.

[ Paty was violently stabbed to death and then decapitated by 18-year-old Chechen refugee Abdoullakh Anzorov on October 16, 2020 ]
Also on trial at the court in Paris is Abdelhakim Sefrioui, a 65-year-old Franco-Moroccan Islamist activist.
He and Chnina spread the teenager's lies on social networks with the aim, according to the prosecution, of 'designating a target', 'provoking a feeling of hatred' and 'thus preparing several crimes'.
Both men have been in pre-trial detention for the past four years.
Between October 9 and 13, Chnina spoke to Anzorov nine times by telephone after he published videos criticising Paty, the investigation showed.
Sefrioui meanwhile posted a video criticising what he considered to be Islamophobia in France and describing Paty as a 'teaching thug'.
He insisted to investigators he was only seeking 'administrative sanctions' against Paty, not violence.
Two young friends of the attacker are facing even graver charges of 'complicity in terrorist murder', a crime punishable by life imprisonment.
Naim Boudaoud, 22, and Azim Epsirkhanov, 23, a Russian of Chechen origin, are accused of having accompanied Anzorov to a knife shop in the northern city of Rouen the day before the attack.
'Nearly three years of investigation have never managed to establish that Naim Boudaoud had any knowledge of the attacker's criminal plans,' his lawyers Adel Fares and Hiba Rizkallah said.
Boudaoud is accused of accompanying Anzorov to buy two replica guns and steel pellets the day of the attack.
Epsirkhanov admitted he had received 800 euros from Anzorov to find him a real gun but had not succeeded.
Four other defendants interacted with Anzorov online prior to Paty's murder.
Yusuf Cinar, a 22-year-old Turkish national, shared a jihadist Snapchat account with him, that later published images of Paty's killing.
Ismail Gamaev, a 22-year-old Russian of Chechen origin with refugee status, and Louqmane Ingar, also 22, exchanged jihadist content on a Snapchat group with Anzorov. The first posted an image of Paty's head with smiley faces after the killing.
The only woman on trial is 36-year-old Priscilla Mangel, a Muslim convert who conversed with Paty's killer on X, describing the teacher's class as 'an example of the war waged by (France's) Republican institutions against Muslims'.
Thibault de Montbrial and Pauline Ragot, lawyers for Mickaelle Paty, one of the sisters of the murdered teacher, said his killing had highlighted the 'depth of Islamist infiltration in France'.
The trial should 'allow our society to become aware of a mortal peril', they added.

It's so weird because we're always told that women never make false accusations, or when they do, they're not consequential and don't ruin lives. /s
When people say that men are more aggressive than women, they leave out the part where women wield men's aggression as a weapon.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Bell Building is being turned into a new GSU Student Success Center
Darin Givens | March 21, 2024
Tumblr media
Exterior work is well underway on an adaptive-reuse project that will convert the Bell Building into a new Student Success Center for GSU! This is exciting to see. You can find information on the successful effort to preserve this structure at the https://savethebell.org site.
This has been a nice victory for historic preservation and for the urbanism of Downtown Atlanta!
In 2015, Georgia State University announced it was going to raze historic Bell Building and replace it with surface parking lots. This struck me and other preservation-minded advocates as a horrible thing that needed to be fought -- especially since the demolition was going to be funded with a donation from the Woodruff Foundation, which also funds preservation work.
We went to work by creating the Save the Bell website & social media channels, by talking to media outlets, reaching out to GSU administration and the Board of Regents, and talking to local city leaders. We were even involved in co-writing a City Council resolution to establish this as a landmark structure, which would have protected it from demolition.
Luckily it worked! And within a year or two, GSU backed away from the demolition plan.
Then in 2021 the good news came: GSU would use a different Woodruff grant to help preserve the Bell and reuse it as a new student success building.
Tumblr media
For some background on the history of the Bell, check out this page on the Save the Bell website. It's actually two buildings fused together, both built as a telephone exchange by the Southern Bell company in two stages, in 1907 and 1922.
Tumblr media
I'm very grateful to have been part of this effort to prevent the demolition of a structure that was clearly a viable candidate for adaptive reuse. It's a shame that GSU leadership ever wanted to raze it, but I congratulate them on doing the right thing in the end.
And huge kudos to all the local preservation advocates who spoke up in 2015-16 about the need to save the Bell, and to all the local journalists who covered our cause. This will now stand as a reminder of a great group effort, and of the fact that minds can be changed when it comes to the way we treat our urban fabric.
