In 1918 in Georgia, Mary Turner, a Black woman who was 8 months pregnant, was lynched. She was hung upside down and covered with gas, then set on fire. Moments earlier, while she was still alive, a member of the lynch mob cut her unborn child from her womb, sending the infant to the ground where it was stomped to death. Turner was finally shot full of bullets. Not one of her killers was ever convicted.
