MEEKS: something tells me meeks would be really into rollerblading or skating? idk i can really picture him as a skater boy, and i can see pittsie coming with him to try it out! meeks would be very chill about it, not trying to learn the coolest tricks or something, BUT he'd totally bring his skateboard everywhere and the poets would tease him about it like oh hey mr cool, do you skateboard? that's so cool i'm SWOONING, good that you brought it to the theatre in case there's a skateboarding emergency

PITTS: photography/videography. if he lived today, pittsie would totally be a youtuber, but i can see him always taking pictures or even "vlogging" in the canon era, too! he just enjoys capturing these memories, and at the end of every year, he'd do a sort of "best of this year" with the poets- i also see him as a big plant dad, not sure if he'd do it in the 60s though? but i can picture pittsie having several little succulents. oh and baking/cooking!! meeks always snacks on his stuff before it's ready and it drives pittsie insane

TODD: i know everyone's convinced todd would be into crocheting, but i honestly don't really see it? no hate whatsoever, i get where people get the idea but to be honest i think crocheting would make todd frustrated/anxious. this boy needs movement, something to do so his mind shuts up, and i think that's swimming. i honestly think todd would be a really dedicated swimmer, maybe to the point where it gets a bit unhealthy because he just throws himself into it to turn his thoughts off?

CHARLIE: yes this one is kinda obvious but charlie would totally pursue music if he had the time and means- he seems so passionate when he plays the saxophone, it's one of the few scenes where we get to see him not joking around, dismissing things with a quip and smirk, but earnestly enjoying something. charlie wouldn't only play, I totally picture him going to jazz clubs and loving to dance there and chat up girls. oh he'd also play video games as soon as they're available!

KNOX: i've mentioned this before but knox would 2000% learn how to play the guitar, and then proceed to play it at dps meetings and with chris. i know it sounds super douchy but honestly, i think knox wouldn't even notice that it comes off as annoying sometimes? he just really enjoys playing the guitar and wants to share that with others. also seems like someone who'd love running, i can see him being one of those people who go on 1 hour jogs in the morning :') Oh and drawing! But he'd be quite shy about it.

NEIL: this is so hard for some reason? 😭 i mean obviously he'd act, and probably go to the theatre quite often on top of that- i also think neil would like cycling, but other than that it's pretty difficult for me to think of what his hobbies would be- i kinda see him as just hanging out with friends a lot and going to parks etc. to chill when he's not at rehearsal. feel free to share your ideas if you have some!

CAMERON: dancing. he's SO ashamed of it and only does it in the comfort of his own room, but if cameron could do anything he wanted, i think he'd do ballet? In the beginning, the PHIGHTING/SFOTH deities were “born”?? “Made”?? you guys debate vro. There are 7 of these deities (however there’s an extra I’ll get to that later) and the world known as the inpherno was made

The deities are known as firebrand, windforce, illumina, venomshank, ice dagger, darkheart and ghostwalker

there isn’t much about ancient history in the inpherno yet so. (CRACK THEORY INCOMING) But around ancient times the “overseer” made their “cult” which will be important to the present day lore later

now to blackrock lore which is the.. um.. it has a lot of lore. Blackrock about 30 years ago used to have Zuka as a recruit of the army (they didn’t have robots back then). Zuka w a s a mercenary in the blackrock army and was very well known in the nation “everyone knew him”. (CRACK THEORY) However, zuka’s arm was probably sliced off by illumina, because he currently does not have an arm and despises illumina. Zuka adopted rocket, likely during his mercenary era

Modern blackrock lore, subspace and medkit used to work together, they are both around 23 at this time. However, subspace wanted chaos and medkit wanted peace so they had beef with eachother and subspace ripped medkit eye out and im assuming medkit threw poison at him , that’s why subspace has rot. After that, medkit was called a traitor and is wanted (messed up I know) .

Coil also stole some crystals from subspace probably at this time, for his own use. My theory is that Coil was a secret test experiment of Subspace and he escaped and took the crystal with him as revenge.

Medkit escaped blackrock after more to that later . After eye for an eye incident, subspace invented these robots called biografts which serve different purposes (soldiers, workers, etc) . Hyperlaser joined the blackrock faction too, and is a hired mercenary by blackrock, kinda like Zuka. Hyperlaser was involved in a serious injury at the battlefield maybe and lost his horns and has a damn lot of burns. (He wears a helmet know) and works with subspace.

Lost temple lore, church of the true eye (overseer’s cult) is mainly in this faction. The people in the cult we know about right now are scythe, medkit, the broker and the dollmaker. (CRACK THEORY) it’s likely that all of the members were forced or manipulated into the cult since they are all conscious they are doing wrong things. Especially medkit, who joined because he needed to escape blackrock.

Katana was also formerly part of the cult, however he left likely because of the corruption. The cult has a father like most cults, he isn’t revealed yet. To join the cult , you needed to have only one eye. You will either skip the “ritual” or get your eye ripped out and replace it with a glass eye. I am guessing they are doing this to sacrifice the eye to the Overseer. The cult also presumably kills other demons that are either chosen or interfered with the cult’s plans, they are probably also sacrifices. Most of the members of the church are highly wanted criminals, scythe being the most wanted since she’s a serial killer.

There isn’t much lore about playground other than the fact that skateboard is the leader of a skating gang in the faction. Rocket left the faction because of a certain playground group (hold up)

A bit same for theive’s den, but vinestaff has a curse that is slowly turning her into a tree. In about 300 years she will be fully tree.. The curse is kind of rare but not legendary since broker has seen that curse before. Shuriken got a call from the broker once, however he likely declined because katana isn’t dead yet. Katana is probably a bit worried about the thieves den twins because of the church of the true eye.

James was the kid to draw on the walls. His paint hand prints were everywhere. Used the pots and pans as a drum set until Harry bought him one of his own and set it up in an extra room. The room quickly became filled with loads of instruments, so many that they eventually expanded the interior of the room. The room had instruments, paints, markers, canvases, posters, fake walls to be spray painted on, a recording area, shelves to be filled with vinyls, sketchbooks, and journals. He writes novels, short stories, and poems. He knits and crochets (Molly for sure taught him). He creates and paints pottery. Anything creative James has a hand in it.

Albus Severus who is so incredibly book smart. Starts reading absurdly young. Cares so much about learning about all there is to know that Ravenclaw is a genuine consideration of where he should be placed. Spent almost all his time growing up outside looking to the stairs for Astronomy studies. Loves to be babysat by Neville because Neville has an amazing greenhouse and is always willing to explain what every plant is, its properties and how it's used most frequently. And then in the muggle world (because I’m a firm believer that Harry makes his kids go to muggle school) number one student, the one kids go to whenever the teacher is busy. Doesn’t really have a best subject but he likes Math and Science the most. 

Lily Luna does every sport, every damn one. In her pre-k some girl is talking about gymnastics and Lily is like “I want to do that” and Harry is already used to giving into his kids creative endeavors so he immediately signs her up and she is a natural. Then it just expands, she is on almost every single team that her school offers. Swim, track, cross-country, volleyball, skating (ice and you know regular skateboarding), snowboarding, softball, american football, soccer, every single sport. From the age of 4 every single week the entire Potter family is at some sort of competition or showcase to support the baby of the family. Quidditch isn’t even a question, girl is one of the -if not the- most successful Chaser to come out of Hogwarts.

All of them are very successful in their fields, the Potters have several display cases of trophies, ribbons and plaques with all their names. And while they are all talented in parts of each other's fields, its very select you know? James is a chaser and Albus is a seeker, and considered two of the best of this era in Hogwarts. Albus sketches the plants that he discusses in his notes, and Lily has been known to doodle on her essays. And Lily and James are considered some of the best of their years. All of them are very powerful and talented but they dominate- no competition- in their respective fields.

I've noticed the recent trend of imagining how the members of the Bat Family would dress, and it struck me how inaccurately Duke's style is portrayed. Therefore, I've taken it upon myself to delve into the fashion of children living in the Narrows, from its introduction back in 1936 up until the Rebirth era. Duke, much like homeless kids from Crime Alley, typically dons oversized hand-me-downs from the various foster families he's famously run away from. Think seize 12 when, really, he's a seize 8. There's a lot of layers in those outfits. He wears most his clothes on his bare back especially when the air has this crisp, weatherless quality to it that only happens in Gotham for about a week in mid-September. Opting for a skateboard due to its portability, he frequents skateparks where he adopts a unique fashion sense from other kids.

He's a visual learner. Notes the slightest facial movements of the person he's talking with. Records the subtlest inflections of their utterances; but he hears without listening. And so he often repeats to someone what he already repeated, or ask them again what they've already answered. But he's able to describe, in four photographic words, the facial muscles they used to say what he doesn't recall, or the way they listened with their eyes to the words he can't remember telling them. And so, along with his journey to find his parents, I find a camera fitting, particularly for documenting his progress.

If he's got anything brand name, it's a thrift find. He knows the spots, and the dates of new arrivals. Has his own personal way of looking at clothes. Can make an "uncool" tee-shirt very stylish if he sees it's potential.

SDV bachelors:

Step aside everyone, a professional in his field enters the stage! After all, Alex is not only a (not yet recognized) master of sports, but also a master of flirting. It's enough for him to flex his biceps, shower with compliments and courtship - and all the girls (and not only) will be his! Although despite all this pathos, he is very careful in choosing a partner, because he is still a gentle and kind guy and wants a serious relationship.

Ordering a pizza at the Saloon for two, a skateboard trick show, gift chocolates or other small treats - Sam does a pretty good job of courting. He is too cheerful to pinning, and with flirting he, unfortunately, weaves in the middle of a sentence and something incomprehensible and funny comes out. On the other hand, bad flirting can make a partner laugh, and they will open their heart to the young prankster, so you could say that Sam can sometimes flirt well (although not aware of it).

Pinning for Sebastian. It's... quite difficult for him to express his own emotions, and sometimes he doesn't consider himself capable of such a thing. Sometimes you can notice his sad look if a person passes by who is not indifferent to him. Here, either the Farmer must be the first to confess their feelings to him, or Sam and Abby help their emo friend.

Hell, that's pretty hard to tell with Elliott, because I think he can be both courting and flirting. Just look at this red-haired gallant man - he seems to have come out of a book about a love story! A hopeless romantic who, despite his impressive ability to make the perfect compliment, can blush himself if you flirt back with him.

Oh my poor chicken man, sitting somewhere in the corner and pinning. No, I can say for sure that Shane can confidently flirt and court. But it seems to me that this will only happen if he is already dating the Farmer. His therapy is going slowly but surely, but for now, low self-esteem and the idea that "there will still be someone better than him" does not allow him to discover his hidden potential to be a romantic.

How to flirt? Date, flowers? Is there a guide for beginners? Harvey can cure your cold or diarrhea, but he's not very good at flirting. Although the courting is quite tolerable and even romantic, but only if the poor doctor stops being nervous and afraid that something will go wrong with the courtship.

SDV bachelorettes:

I think it's pretty obvious that Penny is pinning. She is a very shy and modest girl who won't take the first step in admitting her feelings for anyone. Dreamy, in love, but at the same time insecure and fearful. One thought of rejection or an awkward situation (or worse, a misunderstanding that could turn into a loss of friendship) drives a young teacher into depression.

Haley, due to her popularity, learned about flirting everything. All her fans gave her gifts and followed her, making the slightly spoiled girl the center of all attention. Of course, this was still in school, but something Haley had left from the arsenal to bestow a compliment on someone who is dear to her heart. And if in earlier years Haley did it for the sake of attention out of self-interest, now the compliment from the girl is sincere.

Courting AND flirting because Abigail is capable of so much. So much energy boils in the girl that she will often call the Farmer to hang out in the mines, in search of adventure. Nothing extreme, of course, but Abby will often flirt, compliment them while fighting monsters, and also give them gifts in the form of a found beautiful gem.

Surprisingly, Emily is very adept at courting someone. And every time she has new and unusual ideas in courtship - she is a bright and colorful person, which means courtship will be the same.

Leah is a very confident woman, and she is quite adept at flirting. The artist does not hesitate to give a couple of pleasant compliments to the interlocutor of interest, but don't think that she is frivolous in this. If Leah praises someone, it means there is something for it, and this person is really dear to her.

With Maru, I'm a little undecided. It seems to me that she is not very capable of flirting and courtship. But at the same time, pinning also doesn't fit her character. Young and energetic - she just doesn't have time to yearn for the Farmer. And yet, when the ideas for new inventions ran out and a small creative crisis began, Maru sometimes begins to have bouts of melancholy, smoothly turning into daydreaming about a possible partner.

Sk8 the Infinity & how Reki Kyan is written to be human

SO 👏 if you kept reading past the opening line welcome back to some more thoughts I have had about Sk8. In the show, I think Reki is the most humanly written character in the show. This is due to his personality, but more-so his actions and internal dialogue. 

We open the show with narration from Reki explaining skating and what he loves about it, before seeing him lose the beef with Shadow, and be forced to watch as his board burns. We see straight away that, for all his passions, Reki is punished and given consequences for being too over-indulgent and confident in winning. He loves skating, but it can hurt sometimes. 

One of my favourite scenes with Reki, is him in school before Langa. It’s short, but he is sat doodling away new skateboarding designs and parts. The second someone shows interest and asks what he is doing, he eagerly asks if they want to talk about it, to which he is immediately rejected for his eagerness. His passions being met with disinterest.

Then we have Reki meeting Langa. He doesn’t pay him much attention in class, but when meeting him outside of Cherry’s studio, we get to see Reki’s goofy side come out more. Asking him if he was interested in skating, if he’d want to learn. Then getting shot down once again for his eagerness, only to end up with Langa as a co-worker instead thanks to Oka. As Reki teaches Langa to skate, we het to see Reki shine in his knowledge. he never gives up, even if something seems impossible. He slowly encourages and pushes Langa until he can finally nail that first trick, having fun the whole time and making their friendship all the brighter. It is honest and genuine, even if a little battered and bruised sometimes.

Skipping forward a bit, we see how Reki reacts to other skaters like Miya. Up until this point, we know that Reki is an average skater compared to most, and Miya being the child prodigy, shows Reki up and makes him land face in dirt more than once. There is jealousy of his skill, but also a playful rivalry. Miya is just a kid, similar in age to Rekis younger sister, so he can’t hold a grudge against him for too long. He quickly jumps in to defend Miyas honor, showing that despite everything, he is his friend above any rivalry or squabbles. 

SO. When Reki races against Adam, we see a side of Reki we don’t see much. He is dejected. He tries to joke and laugh, but anyone can see that he is bitter about losing. The people he is surrounded by are spectacular, and he is just regular. He wants to get better, but for now he needs to recover. 

I love the beach episode SO MUCH and for one reason I don’t see people mention often is the scene between Joe and Reki. Reki confides in Joe, and Joe does what he can to comfort him. It’s a rare heart-to-heart we don’t get much of in the show, but when we do it tends to be between the two. They are very similar in my eyes, Joe seeing himself in Reki, and wanting him to not make the same mistakes he did. Reki admits that he doesn't want to fall behind, and while he has the drive, it doesn’t mean he has the skill to.

As the episodes pass and Langa QUICKLY improves, he gets left behind like he expected. He hates it, he doesn’t want to just be ‘the one that hangs around the GOOD skaters’ he wants people to know his name and acknowledge his skills. 

The turning point for Reki’s character is when Langa goes against his promise. Reki is a man of his word, and expects everyone else to keep the same ideals. Once a promise is made, you shouldn’t break it. Knowing Reki was the one to teach Langa everything, seeing him exceed his own skills, and then not keep his promise made Reki break. To him, that was him being left behind. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t reach the same stars that Langa could. As much as this era of the show hurts, Reki is written so realistically. He knows that he shOULDN’T be so upset about this, seeing and supporting his friends improvement used to bring him joy, but now he was left behind without so much as a thank you, he can’t help but close off and run away. How I see it, Reki has the ideals of Someone who wants others to put the same energy into their friendship as he does, and when that doesn't happen, he gets crushed.

Reki at his lowest is when he gets beaten up by his old skating friends, and Oka finds Reki wallowing in self pity. He feels as though he deserved to be beaten up for feeling this way, that his feelings are selfish and he should just be happy. Oka’s advice that sometimes people are just cut out to watch and cheer them on gives Reki the energy to go and watch a race, but even with cheering Langa on, he doesn’t WANT to watch. He wants to be there, skating alongside his friends and having FUN! What fun is there in just sitting there? 

The small scene between Reki and Tadashi has always been interesting regarding Reki’s character. In the depths of his moping, it takes someone who (as he sees it) completely missing the point of skating to knock him out of it. He loves skating, he loves skating with langa, it’s all meant to be FUN! saying it aloud to someone else seemed to be the wakeup call he needed, even if tears were shed.

Once Reki and Langa finally makeup, with Reki having had more time to think things over, we can finally see Reki be given the acknowledgement from Langa that he IS amazing. And of course, Reki blushes. As much as he wants to be recognized for what he can do, being bombarded by compliments makes him nervous and a little embarrassed, and as I read it, feel like all his moping was useless if Langa thought that about him the entire time. It’s sweet and a genuine moment between the two. 

NOW. this post is already really long but I absolutely adore how the skating between him and Adam is done the second time. Reki knows what to expect this time, and just has to endure it until the time comes for him to shine. He might not be the best skater, but he knows everything about the boards themselves, and gets to show off his knowledge once the rain comes. Seeing him win and get that big hug from everyone once it’s over feels like a reunion that I didn’t know I needed. For once everyone is on Reki’s side and supporting him vocally and physically.

As we reach the end of the show, we get to see Reki watch Langa skate almost to his death before their reunion and Langas victory. I think Langas leap of a hug into Reki is the culmination of 12 episodes of friendship- ups and downs all culminating in a fun and loving embrace. A thank you for showing Langa how fun living in Okinawa could turn out to be.

Their duo skate at the end is, as I see it, the start of something new, and the end of Reki’s arc. He has learnt so much, and ended up with a best friend and a newfound love for skating alongside people who truly cherish him. Reki is NOT a perfect person. He gets jealous, and pouts when he gets teased, and makes awful jokes and does some goofy things that sometimes puts him in weird positions, but he is a character who just wants to have FUN as hard as that can seem sometimes.

Her sight is not the best, while she's ok with not wearing glasses regularly cause her issues are not as severe, she still does it every now and then whenever it's needed (like during car drives), or randomly just to relieve some eye strain.

She's REALLY anxious when it comes to needles, whenever she has to endure them while visiting the doctor, hospitals, etc, it's the worst time of her life. It's a miracle that she was able to get piercings, but she desperately wanted to have them, so she just suffered through the experience.

Number 16 is…or, rather, are…Zack & Ivy, from Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?

If you know me, then these two showing up somewhere on the countdown probably won’t be surprising. But if you don’t know me – or, quite possibly, if you only know the Carmen Sandiego franchise via the Netflix reboot series – then this will likely be VERY surprising, especially so high up. So, for those who came in late, as it were: the “Carmen Sandiego” franchise is an “edutainment” series, which primarily teaches social studies such as geography and history. It started off as a series of computer and video games, and was eventually spun off into four separate television programs. Two of them were game shows, the other two were animated programs for kids. The first of these animated programs – and my personal favorite take on the Carmen Sandiego franchise as a whole – was the cartoon series, “Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?”

In the pre-Netflix era of the franchise – and, by extension, in “Where on Earth?” – the premise remained largely unchanged: the title role of Carmen Sandiego is the main antagonist of the series. Carmen is a master thief, and the mysterious head of a legion of robbers, spies, and blackmailers known as “V.I.L.E.” She and her cronies go after rare and one-of-a-kind targets, stealing everything from white lion cubs to Elvis’ pink Cadillac to the Statue of Liberty itself and so much more. Trying to capture Carmen and stop her crimes is the ACME Detective Agency: an elite team of sleuths whose primary objective has become the defeat of Carmen Sandiego, who was once a member of the Agency herself before turning rogue.

In the original computer games, before the cartoon show came out, the Player was the lead detective (although they sometimes had helpers who were fellow ACME Agents in different titles). In the game shows, similarly, the players had the roles of the sleuths on Carmen’s trail. Naturally, for “Where on Earth?” this format wasn’t really going to fly: the creators needed specific protagonists, characters with personalities and lives all their own to go after the arch-villainess. Enter Zack and Ivy: the brother and sister teen detective duo who act as Carmen’s arch-nemeses in the series.

Zack is a computer whiz kid who seems to know almost every foreign language under the Sun. He’s a wisecracking jokester who loves riding his skateboard almost as much as he loves catching crooks. (Did I mention this show was made in the 90s?) Ivy, meanwhile, is an expert martial artist, rock climber, and all-around awesome gal who prefers more hands-on methods of detective work. She tends to be a little more serious than her brother. The two are, in some ways, total opposites, and in other ways they work like two peas in a pod: both have a tendency to grow impatient with one another, but each also cares a lot about their respective sibling. What I love about these two is that neither is really treated as the “top detective” of the two; there’s no clear leader or follower between them. Each compliments the other very well with their respective abilities, as well as their respective personality traits. Throughout the show, they use their knowledge of history, and their respective talents, to solve Carmen’s numerous clues and try to stop her crimes.

I absolutely love Zack and Ivy, and many other people seemed to like them, as well. They were even adapted into the video game lineup that sired the franchise: “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Junior Edition,” which was loosely inspired by the cartoon series, featured the pair as helping hands for the Player. They would also become the template for several other characters who would appear down the line in the franchise. Most notably, the two were later reimagined in the aforementioned Netflix reboot; in that version, Carmen is reinterpreted as an anti-hero instead of a straightforward villainess. Zack and Ivy, similarly, are reworked from a pair of intrepid and brilliant detectives out to catch her, to being her two partners-in-crime, and tend to act as the brawn to Carmen’s brain, in some ways. While these new versions of the characters were fun, and fit the new format, I’ll always prefer the original teen detective duo from the first cartoon show.

I was actually sorely tempted to include the pair in the Top 15, but after much deliberation, I felt others earned the higher ranks better. Still…when your arch-enemy is the World’s Greatest Thief, and you do manage to arrest her a couple of times? You’ve earned your stripes, to say the least.

The past week (the good, the bad, & the miscellaneous):

—One of my uncles is in very bad health, and if he doesn’t get the proper treatment soon, will probably not make it. That’s bad enough on its own, but it has also brought up a whole slew of family drama, which…well, I won’t get into specifics because they’re not really mine to tell, but it sucks.

—The oldest kiddo is doing great with his ADHD meds. He’s better able to focus on schoolwork, he listens better, and he has actual reciprocal conversations more often now. (Like, yesterday, we got into a conversation about AI art/writing, and he had some very well-thought-out opinions! I could tell he wasn't just regurgitating things he'd heard; he'd actually put a lot of thought into it.)

—I've gotten a little sad about the fact that I probably am ADHD, and possibly also autistic, or whatever (there’s definitely some neurodivergence in there), but never got any help when I was a kid/young adult. Because AFAB kids tend to present differently and mask better, y'know? All I know is I had an awful lot of school reports that were like: "J. is really smart, but doesn't follow directions well" or "J. does well on everything, when she decides it's something she wants to do." And then when I reached the age of burnout everyone was like: "But you are so smart! You're just not trying hard enough! You're just lazy!" How much better could I have done, especially in college, had anyone noticed that I was trying, that I was fucking struggling, and it wasn't just laziness?

—Speaking of college, I'm still researching universities I might want to attend when/if I go back for another degree.

—There's also a chance we may be moving sometime in the next year.

—And I'm putting some serious thought into how I wanna proceed with Bone & Ink Press. I want to keep it going, but it has long been untenable the way it's currently going. See, the thing is, I never wanted it to become what it became, a semi-legit publishing house with perfect-bound books and royalty payments and the like. I wanted to do small print run zines and chapbooks. So I'm going to finish up/publish the New Wave anthology, and then the three other titles I have on the roster, and then after that...I think I'm going back to its roots.

—The youngest kiddo had his first online class in astronaut science this morning. He loved it so much, and wants to continue with the rest of the course. Now I just gotta scrounge up some money to pay for the rest. (The first class was free; the rest cost money.)

—My dentist appointment went okay. It was fast and relatively painless. I have two small cavities, and have to go back in a month to get them filled, but they said everything else looks good.

—After the dentist, I had a bunch of errands to run. Normally I enjoy running errands but today I just wanted to get home and relax and also, everyone in town was driving like a jackass, so it took an extra long time to get from one stop to the next.

—But I did see two cuties while out and about. There was a hot middle-aged skater dude in the grocery store. (I know he was a skater because I saw him get out of his car, and it had Santa Cruz, Independent, and other skateboard-related stickers on it.) Downtown, I spotted a beautiful 20-something goth person; they looked appropriately eldritch in a long-black coat and big black boots.

—And while in the checkout at Walgreens, I saw this mom come in with two kids. One of the kids was a goth/punk teen; they shuffled into the store with their shoulders all hunched and a scowl on their face. Amazingly enough, the song that was playing over the sound system at the time was the Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of "Dear Prudence," and the teen recognized it, and for a split second, their scowl turned to a half-smile. And then they went back to scowling. It was perfect, because that is the era of my life which constitutes the bulk of my new zine.

—Speaking of the new zine: it's done, and I am glad it’s done, and I’m pretty pleased with it, but I am also fucking exhausted. To paraphrase something I wrote in my journal in 2009, after finishing a zine: I have completely overdosed on punk rock and stories from my own life. So now, I must cleanse myself with different kinds of music and different writing; namely, fiction and poetry. (Even when my poems are based on my real life experiences, which is often, writing them doesn't deplete me in the same way that writing prose memoir does.)

—I've felt pretty on top of my shit in general lately, but I am somehow flat broke again. Despite all the freelance gigs, side hustles, budgeting, etc. I mean I had to buy more printer ink and paper to complete this zine, so there's that. Then there's the fact that no matter how much we budget, our monthly food money always runs out 5-7 days before it gets refilled. Oh, and then there's the dentist thing. My health insurance covers some dental stuff, but not all, so I gotta pay the rest out of pocket. My dentist has a payment plan, but I had to make a down payment and have another bill due when I go back for my fillings. Shit. Anyway, if anyone wants to order some of my stuff/hire me for stuff, now would be a great time.

Spider-Man (2002)

I’ve probably read a thousand Spider-Man comics and I have drawn the webspinner hundreds if not a thousand times. I even once wrote and sketched out my own fanfic comic about the wallcrawler losing his suit and eventually his temper (call me anytime, Marvel). I guess I’m saying that this was a movie I was very excited for. I’m old enough to remember thinking we were getting a James Cameron and Leonardo DiCaprio adaptation but I was glad it turned out the way it did. 

Tobey Maguire played a great geek - maybe at the time I found him a bit too nerdy, being more familiar with a 1990s adult Peter Parker. J.K. Simmons was an inspired bit of casting as the curmudgeonly newspaper editor who just wants the world to see Spider-Man for the menace he is, which I think we can all relate to. 

I hadn’t seen any Sam Raimi films at this point and I remember finding some of the camper parts a little jarring at first but I’ve definitely learned to embrace them. The slight body horror of organic web shooters makes sense now that I've seen more of Raimi’s work. I would have preferred a more ragged and comic-accurate Green Goblin but, in this current era of gushing fan service, I can certainly appreciate these sort of creative departures now. Willem Dafoe really could have just put on some green blusher and it would have been better than that plastic mask though. 2021’s No Way Home leaned into the idea of using his maniacal face I suppose, but by then I just wanted a comic book character to keep their mask on for once. Well, to each his own.*

I would usually come out of the cinema excited but must have been bouncing off the walls after this one. I’m sure this film in no way influenced me to jump off the kitchen roof of my student halls on my skateboard that same month.

*I thought this was a clever place to drop a Green Goblin quote from the rooftop scene where he’s drugged and tied up Spider-Man and inexplicably doesn’t remove his mask, but if I didn’t explain it, I worried it might go over everyone’s head (much like a mask does - I’ll stop now).

“The Unborn” 1991

-a wonderful entry in the “maybe having a baby wasn’t such a good idea” subgenre

-amusingly this is also director Rodman Flender’s first film, so he gets to channel that feeling of nervous excitement and perplexing dread that comes with your first picture

-also having their first shot is cinematographer Wally Pfister, of later “dark knight” trilogy and “inception” fame. He has the goods already, bathing the film in eeriness

-I admit I had to recalculate my brain numerous times during the first ten minutes, reminding myself that Brooke Adams starring and not Karen Allen. Their similarities are surprising

-it occurs to me now how dramatically smart it is to have a pregnant person when featuring a lead often alone by themselves

+it certainly resonates more than with a drunk overcoming addiction. Possibly because the transformation is so visual

-actor James Karen is so good as the doctor who appears pleasant at all times, but is clearly a sinister riptide waiting to erupt

-a big laugh as a woman is seriously skeptical about this lamaze class (the two ladies are not accredited or trained) and when told by the lesbian couple to embrace her femininity, she curtly replies “suck my dick”

-Gary Numan’s score is a supreme addition to the picture. It has a sneaking sense of doom that climbs up our ears

-how uncomfortable in universe must it be to have sex in a wooden rocking chai? Hormones are great

-truthfully I can’t imagine giving up smoking or eating soft cheeses for anyone

-when Allen’s character Virginia is talking about her children’s book of dealing with fear/death/the void, and is suggested to not emphasize that in the interview, I like her response of “but she triumphs over that! She realizes her life is ok”

-later in the actual tv interview, the sheer fake upbeat banality of the host is delightful

-I know others feel different, but put me down in the “crazy” cat lady > exhausted mother scorecard (or better yet a dog)

-Allen is quite good at projecting the fear that her bloodline is defective, and how she worries that she is making something that carries on her worst attributes

-there is nice segment on depression and moving forward as well

-not really explored but nicely hinted at is the divide between wanting a “perfect” child (really, pride for parents) and a child that has physical/learning disadvantages

+ I can imagine a different story about the super solder children fighting the “imperfects”

-this film does not skimp on the gore. The women impaling her own baby bump with a knife is grisly

-more horrifying is the moment where the pregnant lesbian beats her partner to death, and utters the line “you and the baby…I don’t have the love or room for you both”

-I wonder if the part with the cat getting strangled was originally in her sleep or that was added to soften the blow

+her horror when she wakes up is quite effective. As is the raw desperation when she looks for the toy to vainly revive it

-easily one of my favorite moments was when the dad seems the baby and goes “oh my god, it’s hideous!” Then gets stabbed in the eye by the needle

-actor Jeff Hayenga don’t have much to to, but he supplies warmth quite well. His frosty relationship with his mother in law is very satisfying

-the most whacked out moment is when Virginia hears the baby cry (after the abortion), wanders out to the back alley dumpster, and encounters a black little person belly skateboarding

-I love sections like that

-great production design in the lab with the glowing red babies in spheres

+even better when they explode and get mutant baby guts all over the shot doctor

-my only regret is that she should have reality strangled that baby in the sunset scene, but it works well and yeah this era is notorious for sequel teaser stingers

-I had a chuckle when Virginia pulls out a gun. Rare to see a film that is so loved by planned parenthood and the nra

-the great thing about horror is that the heightened situations really bring out the most vivid emotions, and the feelings around birth are really really easy to go delightfully over the top with.

It’s a winning combination.

Subcultures in Bournemouth

Looking for further design inspiration I wanted to look into subcultures within the youth of Bournemouth. Initially I looked at the surfing culture as the pier is one of the best spots here to surf at and is a key part of Bournemouth.

Bournemouth pier has long been a well-known surf spot, "first being surfed early in the 60’s by quite a few ‘radical dudes,’ the whole of the Dorset coast was then explored for new waves (which there were plenty of)."

Whilst many non-locals may not see Bournemouth as a surf spot, the pier offers sheltered along with a consistent break, attracting many local surfers.

Looking at how visual communication has been influenced by surf culture is a good starting point for how I can draw inspiration from this and put it into my own work.

A good point of inspiration is surfer David Carson. "He is the world’s most imitated graphic designer, at least among magazines that do “hip” and “edge” and who like to break every typographic rule there is while straight-jacketing themselves to another set of strictures".

Taking inspiration from surf and the ocean being wild and unexpected "six years ago, Carson designed, at BeachGrit‘s behest, 151 new logos for the WSL.

The existing logo, he said, “has no soul. The logo just doesn’t represent the sport very well. It’s pedestrian, unoriginal, forgettable,  safe, gentrified and corporate. All things surfing is NOT, at least to me.”

His creative style is clear in his designs and reflects his views on surfing culture and is something that could provide inspiration for my own designs and the way Bournemouth should be viewed.

Another notable subculture within Bournemouth is the "healthy growing skate scene with multiple cliques made of older OG's and a load of young rippers that can usually be found in any of the relatively okay skateparks surrounding our small seaside town".

They used DIY techniques to create their own custom boards and designs, which often involved repurposing old skateboards or other materials. This DIY ethos also extended to skateboard graphics, which were often hand-drawn or spray-painted onto the bottom of the boards. The skateboarding industry also began to attract artists who were drawn to its rebellious spirit and DIY aesthetic. Skateboard graphics became more sophisticated, featuring intricate designs and bold colors that reflected the energy and attitude of skateboarding culture."

"One of the most influential skateboard artists of this era was Jim Phillips, who designed graphics for Santa Cruz Skateboards. Phillips' bold and colorful designs featured skeletons, monsters, and other irreverent imagery that became synonymous with the skateboarding subculture. Other prominent skateboard artists of this era included Vernon Courtlandt Johnson, who designed graphics for Powell-Peralta Skateboards, and Pushead, who worked with Zorlac Skateboards."

We got Elisha, Current bassist and backup vocals in Era of Hubris. She's quiet, romulan, and ready to party

We got Elizabeth, one of the upcoming amateur models that's fighting for her seat at the table. Her and Nina are often competing for jobs.

We got Faison, aka General Grump, aka Mistress Melancholic, Faison loves complaining, her friends, and finding good food.

We got Genevieve, master space station technician and occasional synth hash enjoyer

We got Halston, Genevieve's lackey on the space station. They're trying to get a new position but it's not going well

We got Hugo, parkour enthusiast, mannaferment sommelier, best friend to Terrance, Orrum, and always has a tendency to point out flaws.

We got Katerina, Palikata's favorite media darling, model, and lover of open relationships. Basically you will see her in most if not all clothing advertisements.

We got Letitia V, brilliant, one of the few people who know some form of defense art, bunqua drinker, and all around mellow babe.

We got Lydia, lover of femmes, smart, and absolutely cannot see Artemis without the two of them arguing (they've broken up a few times)

We got Nina, Palikata's amateur model that's really making waves in the scene right now. She's toxic, she's kinda mean, but she sells pretty much anything that has her face on it. (including her own beauty line)

We got P'iquloth, it professional and lover of chaos. They'll help you with anything

We got Terrance, the main character of Romulan Nights, bike courier for contract disputes, bit of a dumbass, but will stand up for his friends

We got Tiarra, Faisons right hand, thinks Terrance is so hot, and is willing to make a fool of herself to get a laugh. One of the main stars of Romulan Nights

We got Ulyana, Terrance's current girlfriend, one of the fewer Or'otl that have gone through engendering. Ulyana will break you down but in an attempt to build you up stronger. Lovely, often seen in leisure wear.

We got Valery, the mind behind eccLesio, musician, artist, and sometimes the local menace.

We got Vincent, Rhys' best friend. Often seen with new partners as he can be a bit of a buzzkill
