The Hiram Clarke Hustler, Viper (2009)

Viper’s is a tough sound to perfect, exactly, because ‘perfect’ as a word appears so totally unfit. This music is purposefully inexact and haphazard, something that is achieved not so much through technical intent but out of an approach, a state of being. Instead, one could claim that this sort of sweltering, unoriented, belligerently singular rap music is something one can, rather than perfect, be an expert in – and Viper is certainly that, perhaps even the only expert of this style.

I’ve laboured much on the Viper sound, on its admirable intransigence but also its subtle diversity. And in his lengthy catalogue, The Hiram Clarke Hustler may be his most comprehensive in the style that Viper is best known for. Indeed, some might argue Ready and Willing is his finest because it is his most concise, but it’s also his most conventional and un-Viperish. The Hiram Clarke Hustler, on the other hand, is intoxicating and off-balance, nonchalantly upending norms and carelessly throwing out grooved, soulful moments of satisfaction. Viper here is in his prime, a total expert of his style – and that may as well be perfection.

For memorial day, I want to remember my veterans (the veterans I researched). I'm going to put their names and one fact that stuck with me below.

Arthur Clifford Kimber - He named all three of the planes he flew after his best friend Nick.

Hiram Baker Fisher J.r - He died two days before being comissioned.

Fritz Barkan J.r. - He left behind a wife named Elizabeth Reynolds.

William M. Bassett - He was a theater techie, and had a patent for a dolly system.

Howard D. Benson - He was an athlete and part of the student government.

Jack W. Bleasdale - He did theater in highschool. He died in a POW camp, leaving behind a wife named Ellaoise.

Russell V. Braga - The last news his family received was from his friend saying they had been separated during battle in Iwo Jima.

Julian G. Burnette J.r. - He was only 22 when he died.

Samuel L. Carson - He wrote home on the day he died that his orders to come home had finally come through.

Albert T. Lavers Jr. - When he died, he left behind a 3 year old daughter named Suzanne.

The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American and Caribbean-born military pilots who fought in WWII. They formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Forces. The name applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel.

All African American military pilots who trained in the US trained at Moton Field, the Tuskegee Army Air Field, and were educated at Tuskegee University. The group included five Haitians from the Haitian Air Force and one pilot from Trinidad. It included a Hispanic or Latino airman born in the Dominican Republic.

March 22, 1942 - The first five cadets graduate from the Tuskegee Flying School: Captain Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. and Second Lieutenants Mac Ross,

Charles DeBow, L.R. Curtis, and George S. Roberts. They will become part of my the famous 99th Pursuit Squadron. List of Tuskegge Airmen.
