Queer Indian Media: A Compilation
A couple of days ago, @impala124 sent @lurkingshan an ask about the lack of discussion about Queer Indian Media in fandom spaces. I wrote about it here, @neuroticbookworm here, and @waitmyturtles here (both of them have excellent points, I highly recommend you read their posts!). It's become quite apparent that people are willing to watch and engage in discourse about queer Indian media, it's just that the lack of popularity and accessibility makes it harder for people to start. So, I've decided to make a list tracking all of the queer Indian media I know of, and hopefully also any meta/discourse about it, which is an idea I've had floating in my head for months now.
This list is by no means comprehensive, so if you have recs, send them my way! Text me on DM, send an ask, tag me in your posts, whatever. And though it's not possible for me to watch everything on the list, I will be slowly going through as many of these as I can and writing about them, as well as hopefully finding more stuff and easier to access versions for the ones that are harder to access right now. This post is going to be a slow work in progress, but I'm hoping to update it regularly. So, if you'd like me to keep you updated, let me know through the tags/replies and I will tag you in future posts!
I've tagged the people who've recommended certain shows alongside each show. Everything on here is available online. The hyperlinked titles lead you to the media itself, meaning that it's available for free online with subtitles. Other details will be mentioned separately.
Disclaimer: The media I have watched/read have recommendation ratings (which will not always reflect my enjoyment of something, rather are based on how much I'd recommend it). While I did lightly screen everything on here, the criteria was 'has a trailer or otherwise showing queerness to be a central theme in the story' and 'is available online', so take that into account if you decide to pick something up, and definitely watch trailers and/or skim the wikipedia pages beforehand.

Books
Memory of Light
Recommendation: 5/10 A historical book set during the colonial era, the lesbian romance is mostly a subplot that loses it's way towards the end. It's kind of a drag, but the history component is somewhat interesting.
Don't Let Him Know
Recommendation Rating: 7.5/10 with serious trigger warnings including rape. It's a brutally honest book designed to make the reader uncomfortable, so proceed with caution. I personally liked it quite a lot, but that's majorly because of how authentic the book felt.
Falling Into Place
Recommendation Rating: 8/10 A modern lesbian romance that follows similar beats to the typical thai bl/gl. A little underdeveloped in some places, but overall quite good.
My Magical Palace
Cobalt Blue
The Paths Of Marriage
Marriage Of A Thousand Lies

BREAKING MY PHONE , BY THROWING IT OUT OF THE WINDOW !!!!
😡
no no no .. no such luck .. just letting off steam ..
🤣
so been in the company of prospective script readings and hearing various ideas and thoughts , to decide what to do next after KALKI 2898 AD, and Section 84 IPC .. to fathom the conditions from market bhujjes भज es .. which in common parlance means the genius genies of the market condition personnel .. who guide and give inputs on their reckoning what is doing well, what the cinema going audiences are liking or not liking etc., ..

Architecture of Uzbekistan (1959)
Vintage book in cardboard folio. Commentary is given in Uzbek, Russian, English, French, German, Chinese, Arabic and Hindi. Foreword in the book is in Uzbek and Russian, additional translations are available separately in booklet form (sans French).
It's a very big and heavy book (I included my hand for scale), size 27.5 × 37.5 cm (10.8" × 14.8"). Netto weight is 2.3 kg. The pages are thick coated paper. 114 pages, a color photo on every page.
The book consists of two parts: 1) ancient architecture of Bukhara, Samarkand and Khiva; 2) Soviet-era architecture of Uzbekistan.
The book itself has some handling wear but is in good condition, no flaws. The folio is heavily worn and has torn corners - see the pictures. The bulk of it is sturdy, it does hold the book.
Price $90 + $70 shipping (yeah, it's heavy -_-)
Message me!
Other items in my shop. I combine shipping. How to buy.

Queerness in Indian Media
↳Film: DIDI TERA DEVAR DEEWANA from HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN (1994, Hindi), dir. SOORAJ BARJATYA
Sooraj Barjatya films are known for their (often unintentionally comedic) portrayals of traditional family values, which is why it was so surprising that a song like Didi Tera Devar Deewana somehow made it into what was, at the time, the biggest Indian blockbuster. The character Rita (Sahila Chaddha), who has no prominent role in the film otherwise, crossdresses to role-play as Prem (Salman Khan). She teases the women, romances Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) and conducts herself with a confident masculinity that was, and still is, virtually unheard of in mainstream Indian cinema across all languages.
Commentary on this song by Professor Gayatri Gopinath, from her book Impossible Desires: Queer Diasporas and South Asian Public Cultures, was posted by Desbian Herstory here.
This song was only the beginning of Madhuri Dixit's involvement in queer media, as she would go on to feature in multiple gay and gay-coded media, both as a supportive character and as the gay character herself. She has also been supportive in real life of the LGBTQ community.

patpran fic playlist: “traffic was slow for the crash years”, a fake dating au
so my bad buddy fake dating fic, traffic was slow for the crash years, is going to be finishing up soon, and i decided i wanted to share my playlist for it! it’s my first time making a playlist specifically for a fic – usually i just have general fandom playlists that i listen to while i write – so this was a lot of fun for me. (it is not spoilery for the forthcoming last chapter, except in that the fic will have a happy ending lol)
you can listen to the playlist either on spotify or youtube, but i wanted to share some of my commentary about why i chose each song here! one caveat is that of all the languages here, i only speak english and spanish, so for the thai, hindustanti (hindi/urdu) (i am south indian lolsob), and korean songs i’m basically going off of the lyric translations into english i could find online (which i've linked to).
1. “crash years”, the new pornographers [lyrics]: the song where the title and all the chapter titles comes from! i'm going to be honest: i don’t really know what the song means, and i doubt it has anything to do with the story i'm trying to tell in the fic. i just really really like the song and its mood, and the lyric snippets that i've used for titles seemed thematic to me! lol
2. "main rahoon ya na rahoon | whether i remain or not", armaan & amaal malik [lyrics]: a little flowery for pran but i love the melancholy unrequited pining mood for his high school years
3. “keeping tabs”, niki [lyrics]: a song about wondering if the person you’re pining over (such as, yk, the rival/friend you had to leave behind when you were shipped off to boarding school for three years) even remembers you or cares about you, and also you’re trying to convince yourself that you hate them. seriously look at the lyrics for this one. extremely pran-coded
4. “เพื่อนเล่น ไม่เล่นเพื่อน | just being friendly”, tilly birds feat. milli [lyrics]: i know this is now a my school president song, but it was a patpran song for me first, so much so that my friend @scribescribe & i made a patpran fanvid/edit to it in 2022! it's just so perfect for them, and i see this as being the mood right after patpran meet again at uni, and pran wondering how he's back in this weird not-friend/crush place again
5. “รักกันจนตาย | love you until i die”, season five ft. jlis [lyrics]: this is the song that the engineering crew play at the concert in chapter 3! pat chooses it because he thinks it’s a fun song to celebrate a new “relationship”, to sell their lie to everyone better. poor pran
6. “เหตุผลที่ไม่อยากเป็นเพื่อนเธอ | the reason i don’t want to be your friend”, so cool [lyrics]: the song that architecture plays in chapter 3; pran chooses it because it’s got basically the same meaning as “just friends” and he needs an outlet. poor pran
7. “one damn good mistake”, miss benny [lyrics]: pat pov for when they start hooking up in chapter 4…i don’t think pat actually thinks what they’re doing is wrong or a mistake, but the mood of this feels much more pat than pran, like he finds the secrecy exciting
8. “lie to me”, abigail barlow & ariza [lyrics]: pran pov for chapter 4. pran's really going through it
9. “october”, alessia cara [lyrics]: pran in chapter 6 when he thinks about the inevitable “break-up”… 😭
10. “애 | mixtape: oh”, stray kids [lyrics]: pat when he realizes his feelings in chapter 7!!! now he’s really going through it
11. “stay”, onewe & oneus [lyrics]: pat after his confession in chapter 7 :( he misses pran so much :(
12. “rearview”, run river north [lyrics]: okay firstly run river north is one of my favorite bands, you should check out their other work. but yeah this duet feels very patpran post-breakup in upcoming chapter 8; they both want each other, but for a while pran convinces himself that it can’t work. (i promise i chose this song before remembering that one of the lyrics was “tapping on your window” sldkfkdj)
13. "พร้อม | ready", mints [lyrics]: more pat pining after the break-up
14. “one of us”, abba [lyrics]: if you know me you will not be surprised that i snuck an abba song in here lol. the reason for breaking up doesn’t match, but the mood of pran in chapter 8 regretting the breakup does, right? one of my top pining songs of all time tbh
15. “fin del mundo | end of the world”, jesse & joy [lyrics]: jesse & joy are also among my favorite artists, listen to their stuff too! it’s so cute and such a ride or die song, befitting of the end of chapter 8. patpran are better as a TEAM, they can be anywhere/handle anything as long as they’re together!!!!
16. “grow up together”, starmaxx [lyrics]: i'm getting repetitive but you should DEFINITELY check out starmaxx’s other stuff, it’s all awesome and most of it is actually more dance-y pop. but this is such a lovely and gentle song about lifetime love that i thought it was a good mood for the epilogue! patpran 4eva

Note
I've read the Jason figurately coded posts and they aren't really any different from other coded discussion. They also usually do talk about actual female characters like Steph. I mean you can like canon black or indian characters and still talk about Raven's literal black/indian coding.
To me - my understanding of coding is when something is intentional. My understanding of Jason having female mentors, or getting killed off for man pain, was that it wasn't intentional commentary. I think those things are coincidences. I think if the writers wanted to make Jason a female character, they would have made him a female character, but these were back in the good old boys club comics days (which exists until now) and I'm kinda sus about any conversation that claims male characters written by men in the comics industry are female coded because. Well. A lot of writers were super sexist/racist/homophobic, and unless there's interviews of the writers explicitly expressing their intent to code a character... it's more just people looking at coincidences or parallels between characters and making assumptions that it was intentional coding. Don't get me wrong, the coincidences/parallels are interesting, but to me they're more indicative of how the male power batman fantasy makes the story lame and annoying not proof of coding taking place
Raven is a completly different situation than Jason, her creative team explicitly based her design off of an Indian women (has been verified in interviews), gave her a bindi, had scenes where she wore traditional Indian dress, and if I'm not completely mistaken or talking out of my ass I believe Marv took inspiration from different Eastern religions while writing her story. Now whether this is coding or cultural appropriation is kind of a fine line. Judging it by standards now - I'd say it leans more towards cultural appropriation, even now Raven still has what looks to be a bindi for aesthetic purposes (depending on the story it's associated with her evil father which is... questionable at best) while still remaining a white character who's both percieved by the audience and by the creative staffs at white. Judging by standards at the time? It's a bit more complicated I guess, I wasn't alive in the 80s. Does this mean i think future iterations of Raven should stay white and stop appropriating Indian culture? Not exactly - i think they should take a restorative justice approach: acknowledge that hey, we fucked up, and then give Raven to an Indian writer/creative team who can showcase a more authentic experience and come up with ways to incorporate her ties to the culture respectfully - say by making Arella Indian, and showcasing parts of Hindi culture on Azarath
I've quite literally never been a part of online fandom before DC so i haven't seen too much coding discourse. Obviously, there is coding in comics. But so many times I've seen people claiming coding exists without looking at the very clear authorial intent behind why the characters say what they do. One example not related to either character: people claiming Chuck Dixon queer coded Tim. I'm sorry. He's literally a raging homophobe, and Tim not wanting to have sex in his run is Chuck using him as a mouthpiece for his abstinence campaign... not queer coding. The context matters, and I'd rather people be honest and just say "hey i thought this was interesting about the character, here's my interpretation of it even though it's not what the real author intended" than lie about the content that's there. Coding in comics does exist, it does happen intentionally by certain authors. But making it up when it doesn't exist doesn't exactly feel productive to me... it just feels misleading and like you're trying to justify why your fave is the best
