some background: hilal is a daughter of hades and camp counsellor (as in therapy not cabin). shes slightly older and sort of takes care of them where she can, filling in missing gaps and doing odd jobs around camp. i post stuff about her @bright-side-of-the-moon for more material & insight if u wish. feel free to dm for anything too ^-^

my name is Hilal which is Arabic for crescent moon. my twin brother's name, Badr, means full moon.

birthday: December 31st 1986

dislikes: dishonesty, deadlines, sardines & fava beans, cleaning the pellets of Marmalade's midnight snacks (ew), social situations

speaking of, this is my eagle owl companion Marmalade. say hi!

she was gifted to me on my birthday by my father. she likes to nibble on barazek, syrian sesame biscuits. shes a bit odd but so am i & i love her very much.

✧ trivia and stuff:

as a daughter of Hades (long story), i have a certain affinity for the dark, but through a boon from Persephone (even longer story), i also possess some botanical abilities.

said powers shift with the changing seasons, and in all honesty im still learning about them myself, so bear with me.

i speak many languages; English and Arabic i grew up with, Chiron very kindly taught me Latin and Greek. in the summer holidays during highschool i learnt Turkish, Aramaic, and a little Farsi too.

i recently took up embroidery! i never knew stabbing could be so much fun but here we are ;)

im a practicing muslim Alhamdulillah, and my faith means a lot to me. it can be hard sometimes to wear the hijab and balance everything, but i try my best and thats what matters

funny story: shortly after my birth when we went to get the paperwork done, mama accidentally wrote her dad's name after mine on the forms, so my 'middle name' is my grandfather's name; Khalil, which is Arabic for friend or companion.

i dont have any weapons (i use my hardcover anatomy book if needs be), but im learning archery. looks cool and is quite fun

its also less taxing on my wrist; i underwent surgery about a year ago for CTS and am still hesitant to commit to strenuous physical activities, even knifesmanship. but im working on it

✧ people, places, and things:

after moving to camp half blood (february ish), the first camper i met was a young Will Solace! there werent many year round campers, but i saw Will every now an then when i went to pick up some pain killers from the infirmary. i still have the sunshine plasters (band-aids) he gave me :)

Nico i met when i was 19 i think, he showed me his mythomagic cards and i made pasta and pesto (a comfort food of mine)

he introduced me later on to Hazel, and i was overjoyed to have a little sister, which is only made funnier when you realise that i am technically the youngest XD

life seems significantly brighter with my new little family and close band of friends. i do hope being on tumblr will serve to strengthen the bonds and make new ones

chances are on any given day you can find me either in the library, the kitchenette over Chiron's study, my cosy room in the attic, or on my sunrise walk where i internally monologue and brood

after a wonderful and lengthy conversation with Lady Hestia over some tea and biscuits, the plans for a cabin of her own revolve around it being a sort of safe haven for relaxation and some peace when things get a little loud or overwhelming.

with her permission ill be using the second floor of the new Hestia cabin as an office for sessions for anyone who needs to let off some steam, have a good cry or a chat and some cookies.

this comes after my psychology & councelling degree and necessary training to qualify as the camps resident mental health councellor, because sometimes being a demigod is a bit much

jokes aside, i look forward to being of some comfort for those who need it in their time of need. baked goods work wonders too.

i have a satchel i carry with me nearly everywhere i bought it at the airport and its been my trusty companion since. i embroidered some (wonky) flowers and skulls with jewels for eyes on it :)

i made a few pendants back when i dabbled in epoxy resin art to make some coasters with flowers i picked. keychains were a bit harder so i only made 3; for hazel, myself, and nico respectively:

the phrase "Sub umbra floreo" is Latin for under the shade i flourish, which i think fits me well all things considered

my idea so far for this blog is recipies, interacting with fellow campers, Marmalade & Abercrombie, and other bits and bobs

the Arabic phrase written in the profile picture reads: heal your sorrows with shawarma, which is my favourite food :P

daughter of death, bringer of life

hilal's underworld domains are that of a psychopomp; she guides and helps souls cross their thresholds and lighten their burdens, giving them peace.

this comes both as her being a daughter of hades but also a decendent of sorts of persephone.

she represents life and death together, proof that they are two sides of the same coin, light and dark intertwined. one cannot exist without the other.

Hazel has the earth and gems, Nico has the dark and dead, so what does Bianca get from her fathers cold blood and hands?

hilals eyes are a dark brown, and in the sunlight they glow faintly the colour of brownies and salted caramel (diana's favourite dessert)

although a daughter of hades, she inherited little of his physical attributes. she does however have his large round eyes and a gaze that strikes terror and dread into ones core. a death glare if you will..

her resting face is blank, cold and uninviting. plenty of campers avoid her for fear of being struck by some unknown force. those who do venture however are taken aback at the warmth and life she radiates.

the irony is that she is naturally very expressive, but she rarely allows herself to show her emotions so openly. it makes her uncomfortable and shes not a little self conscious. what a coincidence that diana can read her like an open book.

general description & some random ideas, have fun:

warm olive complexion, oval face, long lashes and round brows

flowy headscarf, dark academia aesthetic, muted earthy tones (esp sage or rose paired with black)

perpetual ink stained fingers & dark under eye circles

variable eye shape: rbf = sharp and half lidded almond shaped, any other kind of emotion = comically large and round

irises of the most boring shade of brown (except, say it with me now, in the sun, where they seem to faintly glow the colour of honey and molten gold)

about a pomegranate taller than nico, carries a black satchel she embroidered with flowers and skulls with jewels for eyes (hehe)

maxi skirts, ankle boots, cardigans, sliver cyanide ring for giggles or a plain black one idk (one for each child of the underworld aw)

sorry if this is too detailed or not enough lol, idk which style u prefer to draw/ doodle in or what u have in mind. feel free to use any, add ur own, or do something entirely different :D

you may call me nina and yes indeed Hilal is my emotional support riordanverse OC; ive been having some fun recently figuring out and exploring who she is via scrolling through the large expanse of tumblr and reblogging things that make me think of my girl :)

of course! you can read more about hilal's concept idea here and find her @bright-side-of-the-moon but in essence; shes a daughter of hades who is contacted by chiron to have her relocated to camp half blood for her safety, but since shes older than the typical demographic (18) she remains unclaimed and a bit of an anomaly, even by demigod standards. *angst intensifies lol*

she resides at chb as chiron's intern of sorts (think admin & library kinda work) and as she gets more comfortable with her new life and settles, she eventually graduates uni to become chb's resident councellor (as in therapy not cabin) beacuase these kids desperately need hugs gosh darnit.

hello world. todays guest is my oc from the riordanverse where ill be presenting her in interview format. please welcome Hilal!

✧ basics & background:

Hilal (20) is the daughter of Hades and Nur, a university professor of languages and translation, and the older twin sister to brother Badr.

Nur is Jordanian and acquired her higher education in the UK via scholarship where soon after meeting and marrying Hades she had the twins on December 31st.

the trio moved to Jordan to live with Nur's family when the twins were about 11. they graduated highschool at 17 with american HSDs (international curriculum).

the twins are unaware of their parentage nor their status as demigods, interestingly enough and for reasons that are not yet clear, neither ever faced the typical challenges demigods usually do (most likely a combination of geography and genetics)

✧ premise:

shortly after the twins' graduation, they travel as a break before starting university in october, deciding to also to visit Nur's brother in the states who had recently married and taken up a teaching post at a university.

tragedy strikes as it does, and a major car accident results in premature deaths of both Nur and Badr. Hilal is now left alone in a place she does not know and a future up in smoke.

a couple of months of physiotherapy and healing later, Hilal recieves a strange letter from a 'Chiron' who requests a meeting to discuss parentage and prospects. this eventally leads to her taking up residence at camp half blood with arrangements yet to be made for her education.

since she is older than the typical demographic of demigods, some rules dont apply per se. she ends up as an intern of sorts for Chiron, who is later revealed to be her half uncle (and therefore mahram lol). Hades claims her on the eve of her 20th birthday and they have tea in the underworld (ft. death glares and pop tarts)

✧ Demigod fact file and trivia:

as the daughter of Hades she possesses an affinity for the dark and its derivatives, her abilities are somewhat unknown as she has neither trained let alone mastered them.

most curiously however is her relationship with the natural world, specifically botany; she seems to have influence over life and death simultaneously, making her even more of an outlier than she was already.

the working theory is that being demigod twins may have a hand in the way certain qualities manifest, being split so to speak between the siblings. but it still doesnt explain her chlorokinesis.....

she is a natural in the kitchen, and uses her newfound hobby of baking to process and manage her trauma among other things

spoiler alert yall due to shenanigans she takes after persephone

the plot thickens: a secret meeting between persephone and an inconsolable Nur in her final trimester ends with a bit of a boon, the result is Hilal bein a unique flavour of underworld.

"oh." whatever had been building up in my heart for her that id spent God knows how long dancing around or outright ignoring has irrevocably and permanently snapped, flooding my insides with a warmth i havent felt in years. to my horror my eyes started prickling.

"a Hilal for my Hilal" she winked. i snorted. she really was her fathers daughter. the warmth creeping up my face attested to the fact.

"you idiot." i croaked. fuck. having emotions was the absolute worst. i looked at the crescent moon glowing softly in the teal skies and tried not to betray any further emotion. "i love you."
