The (Blue) Light of ThunderClan

This is my very first ever attempt at drawing a full environment. It went pretty well - the whole drawing is about 80-90% accurate to the image I pictured in my head - but there’s still a lot that I could definitely do better. Namely: learning how to use references way more. And also properly researching a story world in order to get lore-accurate settings. (If you’re wondering, “Where’s the ravine?”, I’m right there with you asking that same question.)

Oh and faces. I am absolutely awful at drawing faces.

Still, for a first try, I’m overall happy with the result. And I can always do better with the next drawing, after all.

re-reading warrior cats Into the Wild because i'm running a one shot tomorrow for Halloween (after all, what's scarier than the ghost of fandoms you were into in elementary past?). it's a trip.

here are some notes:

grey-paw is such a fanboycat over all the other cats as exposition and it's hilarious (he was my favorite back then, and still is now) also, not grey-paw fanboying over a rival clan's deputy that just died.

this is book one. this is read by elementary students.

the phrase "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the Highrock for a Clan meeting" smacked me in the face back into elementary school.

If you’re gonna rewrite the other arcs. Will you bring different cultures to the clans? Like a more unique answer to Firepaw’s question of why they can’t work together

Considering the absolutely nothing answer they give him, I feel like really the culture should just be called out more. The clans don’t work together and it’s dumb, and Firepaw should be the one to bring change, therefore reflecting as such in the symbolism of the BloodClan finale. All the clans work together.

Seriously, this is the response they give Firepaw.

And then Tigerclaw follows up with “It is our Clan loyalty that makes us strong. If you weaken that loyalty, you weaken our chances of survival.”

Like that is such a flawed answer and yet it’s the continued answer we are given to not working together. I’m not saying the clans can’t be separate. I think it’s great they have different cultures, preferences, and ways of life - and inevitably with limited resources there will be arguments. I totally understand not taking a mate in another clan, or having to join someone else’s clan for things to work - but we’re talking about cooperation and just trying to get along. That is STILL seen as a sign of weakness to this day and I think Firestar at least should be the symbol of that potential, before the 12 and The Great Battle being the true turn around of cooperating clans.

I was ranting about Warrior Cats to my sister and she said I should do that on tumblr so let's get into it.

Recently I joined a Warrior Cats book club (we are all 20-30 year olds) some of us are reading the series for the first time and for others it's a reread. I am rereading them and OH MY GOSH I forgot how badly these books pissed me off. I was definitely an avid fan but I had (and still do!) have a lot of criticisms and complaints about this absolute behemoth of a series. Right now I am on book six the Darkest Hour and here are a few thoughts from this reread.

First of all, I feel like just because your target audience is children doesn't mean you need to dumb everything down. You can have characters and worldbuilding that isn't overly simplistic and one dimensional, explained away with a "that's just how things are." Kids are able to understand a lot more than some people seem to think they are and if you're going to have characters dying horrific bloody deaths left right and center why not add some decent worldbuilding that's not centered around prejudice and stereotyping other characters?

Bluestar. Girl. I've read her backstory and everything and while yes I'm sympathetic that she has to deal with mental illness that's been passed down in her family (probably from the inbreeding, which isn't her fault) but she's a leader and she's got to the point where everyone in her clan is being put in danger because of her. I'm pretty sure theres a rule where the medicine cats can say a leader is unfit to lead? I may be misremembering.

Everything that I say has probably already been said, I wasn't online when I was a Warrior Cats kid so I know I've missed mostly everything except for the AMVs. Anyways, I'll probably rant more as I get through more books.

I know it’s just an idea, the leader ritual, but I have questions I thought of immediately

If a leader prior was driven out, would they still use the exiled leader’s lives as reference for the ceremony?

If a leader is exiled without having lost a life, what would they do instead?

Did Tigerclaw just get pollen a single time for Nightstar, who didn’t actually have his lives, or get stuff representing Brokenstar, or since he was exiled, would was he cleansed with Raggedstar’s lives?

Also it’s a metal as h*ck image imagining Blackfoot being welcomed in a shower of blood for every life Tigerstar had taken that day. It’s such a powerful image in my head, standing there as the blood runs down his fur yet he remains standing there unflinching, face unreadable.

Hmmm...

Previous Leader Driven Out

This is the kind of complex situation where it would depend on what sort of message the new leader wants to send. How much of the Clan stands behind them? Are they trying to court those who don't support them, or are they trying to shame them with what they did?

BB!Nightstar would want to court them, which frustrates the cats who actually put him in power. Deerfoot would have demanded he be anointed by Brokenstar's victims. Let the Clan see the rotten blood and grave soil of WindClan cats and ShadowClan warriors alike; impossible to tell which droplet comes from who.

But instead, Nightstar has someone slash open his forehead. His own blood anoints his fur. "The blood of the rebels who drove him away." A signal that such radical behavior is behind them, a return to normal.

Deerfoot, in the crowd, wishes he would bleed himself dry for it.

In general though-- it would be pretty rare for this ceremony to ignore a previous leader, legitimate or not. The purpose is to "clean away" that which came before, like ending an era. For example; if Icestar chooses to be anointed in acknowledgement of Mistystar instead of Splashstar, she would be including Splashstar's brief rule within her own era.

(Which could be a choice worth making, if she has a point to make.)

Peacefully Abdicated

This is a shameful thing to Clan Cats. You are given your lives to die for your Clan 9 times. This ritual would be pretty extreme, because the new Star REALLY wants to scrub away that association.

It would probably use salt. In the old territory, this is one of the rarest and most useful substances they have. It's a flavoring, it's an effective parasite killer, it's an antiseptic for wounds. Anointment by gold dust, essentially.

For Pinestar, they might use crushed up kibble for a clean break. Tigerkit formative memory unlocked; Sunstar standing on the highrock, furious and disgusted, brown dust streaked through his golden fur and quivering on his angry whiskers.

What was Tigerstar anointed with?

Pollen for Nightstar's illness. Runningnose wouldn't want to jeopardize Tigerstar's legitimacy by revealing the fact Nightpelt was unblessed. ShadowClan cannot go another day without strong leadership...

Especially not in BB where there's a non-zero chance Runny violently smothered Nightstar for briefly looking like he was about to survive his plague LOL. He has immense self control but every time he looks at Nightstar he's biting back the I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream hate speech.

(It massively amuses me that every member of the Mudlizard Family in BB hates Nightstar for completely different reasons. You cant mention politics at Cat Thanksgiving unless youre cursing Nightstar.)
