The joke is simple yet complex (fitting for C. S. Lewis, honestly): the Scrubb family is described as being weirdly OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) where they all care about cleanliness and things being in very specific order, and yet, they fail to see what truly matters in life (aka. other people). Eustace himself is a very spoiled boy, raised in a "modern" way, rudely calling his parents by the first names (which is weird even by today's standards - back then in England, it was unthinkable from what I know), and being terrible to his cousins.

So the joke is that 1) Eustace's name pun being "useless cleaning scrub" checks out, because he's useless AND annoying, and 2) his parents named him in such a way proves that despite them being "modern" and enlightened", they are in fact very ignorant, not realizing what the name sounds like to regular people.

Overall, it's a brilliant piece of humor, and I really appreciate it from a language standpoint, despite not "getting it" at first.

Wait a minute... "Eustace Clarence Scrubb" is a pun???

So I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but the "Chronicles of Narnia" is my favorite book series of all time – and coincidentally, the first one I've ever read on my own as a kid (one that wasn't assigned by the teachers at school, that is).

However, the first time I read it was in my native language; which is not English. So some of C. S. Lewis' humor didn't get translated for me to understand it properly. At least, not until I read the books again in English as an adult.

And only NOW, after all those years... I realize that "Eustace Clarence Scrubb" is apparently pun!? Why did no one ever tell me!!!

I'm not 100% sure if I got it right (seeing as I literally just realized it), but it definitely sounds similar to "Useless Cleaning Scrub". Is that why the first line in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is:

"There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it."
