Common misconception about Mr. Collins in Pride & Prejudice is that he's sucking up to Lady Catherine to retain his position in the church. This is not true, the living is his for life, he's sucking up for more, as Elizabeth observes: Very few days passed in which Mr. Collins did not walk to Rosings, and not many in which his wife did not think it necessary to go likewise; and till Elizabeth recollected that there might be other family livings to be disposed of, she could not understand the sacrifice of so many hours. (Ch 30)
It was possible at the time for a rector to hold multiple livings, they would install a curate for about £50/year and pocket the rest of the income.
Also, it was nigh impossible to remove a clergyman once he was installed at a living. This example is from the book Fashionable Goodness, Christianity in Jane Austen's England by Brenda S. Cox (TW: violence against pregnant women):
Dr. Free seduced his housekeepers, resulting in five illegitimate children; caused one of the women to miscarry; let his pigs desecrate the graveyard, and kept cattle on the church porch; sold the lead off the church roof; cut down and sold trees not belonging to him; left the parish for long periods of time; and refused to marry and bury his parishioners. Eventually, when he offended a gentry family over a burial, they lodged a complaint. This led to seven years of expensive trials, at the Bishop of Lincoln's personal expense. Finally Dr. Free was removed from his living, eventual dying as a beggar. (Ch 10)
(And now you can see why Darcy really didn't want Wickham to be given a living!)
Mr. Collins and Charlotte are not being irrational in their devotion to Lady Catherine, a second living could double their income without adding very much at all to their work. Charlotte might have the added benefit of Mr. Collins spending some time at his other living during the collection of tithes. Now I do think Jane Austen found this kind of behaviour repugnant, but it isn't ridiculous, it's highly motivated.

Actually I have just now decided I really like Luke (I just gave him mommy issues ☠️ and it worked)

do you ever feel casually suicidal? like you're not depressed or anything you're doing fine but also it feels like a convenient option
#if you can't make connections with people or be seen by anyone then like. at least you can feel like you're helping a better cause#to like charities and gfms and anyone else#but you have to tone that down bc you're slowly losing money bc you still can't get a job#and bc you don't have a job it means you're just stuck in the house all day. which gives Way Too Much opportunity to Think about everything#and also so like. i still share a room with my sister but it was fine bc she'd stay at her bf's a few nights a week#but he's got a job that's a bit further away and basically she can't go round his as much. so now it's maybe like once a week#the room is getting messier so it gives me less energy to do anything#you can get really into an unhealthy weight loss obsession bc at least it feels like you're getting towards something#but idek is set weight theory real? bc once i get down to a certain point it suddenly resets#like honestly counting calories and donating money to every gfm i saw and writing a film script was what kept me going#but first one isn't working and second i need some sort of income and third is finished and i have no way of actually creating it#and then there's the whole lack of stable hyperfixation and ability to find new music i enjoy#and realistically what would fix me is having a good job that i enjoy and somewhere to live on my own#but until i get a job that's currently impossible. and even then it probably won't feel like enough#my entire life is lived on my phone i need more physical objects but i don't have enough space#bc i share a room with my sister. it's like all my problems are connected#and i have enough optimism that i still think it'll get better in the next few weeks. maybe i'll be able to get a job and that'll#get everything going again#but at the same time i could easily just die#I've graduated from uni. I've seen the who live 3 times. I've crashed my car twice. I've watched 30 years of corrie. I either need to accept that I am just a way stronger person than this friend and can handle way more while still being able to engage with the world as a person, or recognize excuses as excuses, accept that I am not valued and be done or. Maybe both. Idk. It might be somewhere between the two. I am just sick of regular life stuff rendering him unable to spend any time with me, and of him being unable to bear any of the details of my life, when I would move mountains to rekindle our friendship. Though I'm starting to wonder if I still would.

YEAH. it's probably a very slow dawning horror, even after Mabel and Dipper tell him about trying to "fix" his leg and then getting a new leg for him. ("I even put stickers on it!" Mabel grins, oblivious to the almost sick look etching its way onto Ford's face.)
Ford isn't. thrilled. to say the least. which is why he tries to get Stan to the doctor. only to find out that, not only has Stan been living under his name, but also he's been actually Legally Dead for almost thirty years, which makes it infinitely harder to get him treatment. (ford thought the offhand comment about faking a car crash was a joke. It wasn't.)
Stan's missing a leg, he's half deaf, he hasn't updated his glasses in years, he's constantly in pain apparently, and he's using things that are actively hurting him. (it's a good thing he's only using that 8ball cane for Mr mystery, because if he was still using it all the time, Ford would slap him with it. THINK ABOUT YOUR WRISTS. THINK ABOUT YOUR BACK. STANLEY.)
plus, Ford's got to deal with the fact that he Didn't Notice stan had a prosthetic when they were fighting back thirty years ago! How didn't he notice?? He's beating himself up Big Time over here.
it's a good thing the town of Gravity Falls don't really care for legalities. and neither does Ford. even if he couldn't get the prosthetic, hearing aid and cane the Legal way, he's not above stealing it. not when it comes to his knucklehead brother.
he's Still mad about a lot of things, and will remain mad until the end of summer, but he's not gonna sit by while Stan hurts himself like that.
(he's also getting Stanley on some goddamn medications. anything he needs. stanley please for the love of moses take your pain medication. dont make him get the twins.)

au where grunkle stan has a prosthetic leg, he lost it in his 20s and has been using a range of (usually very bad and/or possibly stolen) prosthetics, and he never changes to better ones until the old one breaks beyond repair.
especially after taking over the mystery shack, because Stanford never lost a leg on record, so it'd be weird if Suddenly he had a decade old amputation randomly.
when the twins visit for the summer, they only find out after arriving. the Mr. Mystery persona hides his leg, after all, and sure, he walks around with the 8ball cane, but that's just for the persona, right?
wrong. Stan needs a cane, but only uses the 8ball one (it's not very good for him), and his leg is Old. it's like bordering on ten years old, and the foot is all worn out, plus the knee joint stops working randomly. so. he needs a new one.
Mabel and Dipper devise a plan. at first, their plan is to "fix" Stan's leg. regrow it or whatever. they end up almost doing some kind of witch deal, but it doesn't work out (and also they almost get eaten or smth)
stan explains to them that he's not looking to Regrow his leg. he's spent longer Without it then he ever did With it. he's spent like almost forty years with only one leg, he's used to it. they don't need to worry about him. and he ruffles their hair.
but Mabel and Dipper manage to convince him to at least get a new prosthetic and cane. ones that are actually good for him. Stan doesn't want to go to the doctor, but they find a way. probably mcgucket, he happily cobbles together a leg and cane. it might have lasers and Such in it, but he removes them when asked.
it's not perfect, but it's Leagues better than what stan had before, and the twins decorate it for him. stickers, some glitter. yknow.
very sweet I think. also this would slightly change Stan's usual outfit of his white tank top and his boxers, because he is hiding his leg from Gravity Falls, or at least trying to. the entire town probably knows already and just don't comment on it (it'd be rude if they did) he probably wears sweatpants or something.
also Ford Doesn't Know stan only has one leg. he's in for a shock. he's still mad about a lot of things, but like. cmon stan. that leg, while better than the others, isn't good. it's made of scrap metal stan. probably tries to get him an actual proper medical prosthetic. from a certified place. ford's gonna be short with him and grumpy but he's not gonna let stan screw himself over like this. also that hearing aid is just as bad. go to the doctor Stanley.
#in my mind ford wasnt gonna Kick Stan Out immediately. he was gonna give him some time to like. buy a house. find a job. ect.#he didnt realise that stan. cant do that. turns out people dont employ or offer real estate to dead people.#so he is absolutely also rethinking his end of summer plan#well. until weirdmaggeddon happens. and stan loses his memory. fords never letting him go ever again.#stanleg au#ask to tag

BE NICE#static.soundz#sorry that last post was so directly inspired by seeing someone go can u guys be nice he is on a fucking nutbag schedule. which he is.#i dont think some people understand the insanity of comic production. and how much it takes a toll on you.#many have said and i will say it too: comics is a killing industry. it is a beautiful fun job. it is fulfilling. it will also destroy you.#the most common and easiest to use example is in fact the manga industry. they want chapters in a week. 20 page type chapters in a week.#A WEEK!!! and currently look at things like webtoon as well which also expect the same amount of pages. in a week. an issue in a week#is an insane demand. it is an unreasonable demand. it is scheduling that leads you to a crash and burnout and health issues#because it is fully finished polished pages. as much as i poke and complain about how some things look there#i am also highly aware of production schedules. even if some styles are not my taste that still doesnt mean it isnt insane work#and it's the same in american big industry comics too. it isnt weekly demand the way those are. but it's still an intense schedule#you are working on pages and can get behind years before those comics even hit shelves.#and as it becomes more individualized too as we lose the team element and work becomes more one person doing all pencils and inks#that schedule is a lot. it just is. it doesnt matter if theres more time in comparison to other parts of the industry#the point is that it is all very demanding and exploitative. there is a drive yourself to your grave mentality here and i've had ppl try#to shove that mindset onto my and my peers which is the worst thing possible to encourage. highly alarming and disheartening to encourage#impressionable students already so worried about making it to drive themselves to an early grave. abuse substances to get through work.#work excessive hours while you still can because when you hit your 30s youre gonna lose that ability#become bitter and prepared for rejection as opposed to success because this industry sucks!#it's just such an unhealthy depressing mindset. i've had more artists preach the exact opposite as that and more ppl have been trying to#shift over to valuing your time and health. but still a lot of people are in that other mentality. and it's very very very sad.#i am only a student doing very low stakes homework for classes. i have no industry experience. and i still get it taken out of me#to do fully fledged out pages in my style in one week. this is also just a thing for me bc certain personal factors just make it hard#but still. comics are fun. they are fun. they are fulfilling. they will lead you to so many fucking issues if you are not highly careful#there is a reason why so so so many fucking comic artists have very well known issues. why you hear about so many ppl with substance issues#artists with very poor mental health. when you are in comics this is how it is.#i am glad there has been a big shift in recent years towards taking care of yourself as an artist. and that more ppl try to value it so tha#things can hopefully change at large in a broader sense. but please remember. we are an exploited chew up spit out industry too.

Lost a bunch of shit in Valheim trying to recover shit in Valheim it’s great I love not knowing why the game crashes randomly and loses progress
#we’re running modded valheim and **I** don’t crash but my husband does but **I’m** the host so whatever he had in his pockets#disappears if it wasn’t in there the last time we saved which btw because this happens so often is sub 5 minutes now#but that was long enough to lose a huge amount of resources bc we were moving a boat to go get our silver#so I’m going through the process of logging out#starting unmodded valheim#logging in. giving myself all the stuff to make that boat that just vanished when#guess what! I forgot to log into my bridge character who ISNT holding anything modded#and logged into my MODDED CHARACTER with MODDED ITEMS.#WITHOUT MODS.#so not only did we lose our boat I also lost#a shit ton of hard to get my hands on Magical Runes#that I CANT use Devcommands to give myself :) because they’re modded :)#and also !!!!! I lost my backpack. with all the resources that were inside it.#anyways that happened a couple hours ago and I started my period so I’m already hugely depressed#and we’re fighting unemployment in the hopes we can pay our bills still because other spouse got let go. so we’re down the main job.#and before this all happened I ordered a hoodie from Rainylune and they sent the wrong size and it doesn’t fit ;;#and it’s been like nearly a week since I emailed them and I haven’t heard back and I’m sad and stressed abt money and#worried about how we’re gonna cover the hormones we started because we thought we were finally fucking stable#and I never get to leave the house anymore or see people and I think I’m just getting sad 😞
