in terms of art alone im sorry. im a jrjr defender to my last breath you be fucking nice to him. i dont wanna hear shit❗️❗️❗️
#can someone also get him better inkers rn i am begging. pleading even. HE MAKES GOOD STUFF THEY JUST GIVE HIM SHIT INKERS WHO DONT GET IT.#MY FIRM BELIEF. im sorry. i like his stuff. there are certain things not quite my taste but i think he does good overall im a fan. BE NICE#static.soundz#sorry that last post was so directly inspired by seeing someone go can u guys be nice he is on a fucking nutbag schedule. which he is.#i dont think some people understand the insanity of comic production. and how much it takes a toll on you.#many have said and i will say it too: comics is a killing industry. it is a beautiful fun job. it is fulfilling. it will also destroy you.#the most common and easiest to use example is in fact the manga industry. they want chapters in a week. 20 page type chapters in a week.#A WEEK!!! and currently look at things like webtoon as well which also expect the same amount of pages. in a week. an issue in a week#is an insane demand. it is an unreasonable demand. it is scheduling that leads you to a crash and burnout and health issues#because it is fully finished polished pages. as much as i poke and complain about how some things look there#i am also highly aware of production schedules. even if some styles are not my taste that still doesnt mean it isnt insane work#and it's the same in american big industry comics too. it isnt weekly demand the way those are. but it's still an intense schedule#you are working on pages and can get behind years before those comics even hit shelves.#and as it becomes more individualized too as we lose the team element and work becomes more one person doing all pencils and inks#that schedule is a lot. it just is. it doesnt matter if theres more time in comparison to other parts of the industry#the point is that it is all very demanding and exploitative. there is a drive yourself to your grave mentality here and i've had ppl try#to shove that mindset onto my and my peers which is the worst thing possible to encourage. highly alarming and disheartening to encourage#impressionable students already so worried about making it to drive themselves to an early grave. abuse substances to get through work.#work excessive hours while you still can because when you hit your 30s youre gonna lose that ability#become bitter and prepared for rejection as opposed to success because this industry sucks!#it's just such an unhealthy depressing mindset. i've had more artists preach the exact opposite as that and more ppl have been trying to#shift over to valuing your time and health. but still a lot of people are in that other mentality. and it's very very very sad.#i am only a student doing very low stakes homework for classes. i have no industry experience. and i still get it taken out of me#to do fully fledged out pages in my style in one week. this is also just a thing for me bc certain personal factors just make it hard#but still. comics are fun. they are fun. they are fulfilling. they will lead you to so many fucking issues if you are not highly careful#there is a reason why so so so many fucking comic artists have very well known issues. why you hear about so many ppl with substance issues#artists with very poor mental health. when you are in comics this is how it is.#i am glad there has been a big shift in recent years towards taking care of yourself as an artist. and that more ppl try to value it so tha#things can hopefully change at large in a broader sense. but please remember. we are an exploited chew up spit out industry too.

How to End Up Being an Inventor (In 5 Actions).
Tumblr media
We consulted with numerous expert inventors to boil down the tricks of the craft. Some have made jobs out of an invention, others have found markets. If you're sitting on an idea that might be the next terrific American invention, below's your playbook.
1. Cultivate an Idea.
The record of the invention is studded with one-hit marvels, inventors whose solitary blockbuster suggestion made them a fortune. However one of the most prolific inventors can not switch off the idea maker. They are also troubled as well as creative. Inventors just see life's many obstacles in a different way than the average person, according to medical-devices inventor Robert Fischell. "The key to inventing is the awareness that a problem is a trigger from which an invention can be created," says Fischell, who holds more than 200 patents for advancements such as an implantable heart defibrillator and also enhanced stents. "When I'm in the operating room as well as a doctor tosses a device against the wall in irritation, I claim, 'Great, here's an opportunity.'".
Fischell, who at the elevation of his profession filed a new patent application every six weeks, wastes no time in determining whether his most recent concept satisfies the patent test of being brand-new, beneficial, and also nonobvious. He goes right to the U.S. Patent as well as Hallmark Workplace's database of released patents (patft.uspto.gov) and performs a search. "If you review a patent, as well as someone, has currently resolved the issue, after that you're still an inventor. You just arrived late," he says.
If, after an initial search, your idea verifies unique, after that continue developing it. Be reasonable concerning what you're obtaining right into. "The moment you commit will be dual what you believe it will be, as well as the buck amounts you devote will be 4 times what you assumed," Leatherman states.
Make drafts, execute examinations, expand principles, and keep comprehensive notes. Patent lawyers suggest their customers preserve a visit a completely bound notebook that obtains stamped by a notary public frequently. A logbook becomes essential in cases before the U.S. Patent and also Trademark Workplace including similar technologies, as the burden of proof is up to patent applicants to demonstrate that they were the initial to conceive of an invention.
At this onset in the video game, your investment of personal time and money will have been minor compared with what is around the bend. Before the case, you'll need to ask some hard questions about both your concept as well as on your own: Is my idea significantly different than any that precede it? Exists a large market for the product? Can it be developed and made at a reasonable expense? That is the client, and why should they get my product as well as not a competitor's? Am I prepared to devote myself fully to making this concept do well?
Inventors who have been via the process care not to undervalue the psychological and mental determination called for. "If you can't afford mentally and intellectually to fail if your vanity would certainly be wiped out after that don't do it.". see also InventHelp TV Commercial
2. Develop a Model.
With the schedule of powerful computing and computer-assisted layout software application like Autodesk Inventor as well as SolidWorks 3D CAD, inventors today live in what Kamen describes as "the utmost sweet-shop." The earliest versions of Kamen's first invention, a wearable mixture pump that provides specific dosages of medicines such as insulin, sprang to life out a computer system display yet in a workshop set up in the basement of his parents' home on Long Island, N.Y. Kamen was a teenager at the time.
Also when made in a highly exact digital CAD atmosphere, an item ultimately has to leap to the genuine globe in the kind of a model. Depending on the materials entailed and the complexity of an invention, the expense of making a high-quality prototype can empty a financial institution account as well as compel an inventor to look for financing at an extremely early stage.
Tim Leatherman supports taking a DIY technique. During an experimental phase lasting three years, he constructed prototypes of his groundbreaking multitool from cardboard, wood, as well as steel till he picked advanced layout. "By collaborating with my hands," he says, "I found out about barriers to performance as well as manufacturability.".
When you have your prototype, it's time to repair your invention. Obtain outside your head and go-to experts in the field, Fischell suggests. "Ask, 'Do you believe my suggestion has business benefit? Would certainly you utilize it?' Make them authorize a privacy arrangement," he says. For inventors, the possibility of copyright burglary is very actual, but way too much caution can become immobilizing. Privacy, or nondisclosure, the contract permits you to field-test in confidence.
Responses from Mario Salazar's target audience-- woodworkers-- compelled the Colorado Springs inventor to adjust his digital miter gauge. The mechanical prototype he constructed in the cellar with a blowpipe, an oscilloscope, and also a milling maker noticed eBay worked efficiently as well as felt ideal to Salazar, yet the tradespersons wanted it bigger as well as much more inexpensive. "You can't fall for your invention," he states. "Obtain responses and also make alterations accordingly.".
In the agitated company world, a patent protects the inventor by providing the unique right to leave out others from making, making use of, or offering his invention for 20 years. "When other people see you making cash, your patent will be the only methods you have for keeping control of the market," claims Lonnie Johnson, founder of Johnson ElectroMechanical types of equipment as well as the inventor of the Super Soaker water weapon. 3. Submit a Patent.
Patent law is made complex things, so get an experienced patent lawyer to write and also file your patent application. Anticipate to pay in between $3000 as well as $10,000. "Work with a patent lawyer who additionally has a level in the field you're making an application for a patent in and who understands your market," Salazar encourages.
A knowledgeable lawyer can prepare a wide patent that safeguards an invention against violation from any angle. In the case of Richard Phillips, proprietor of International Survival, his well-crafted patent application made it impossible for anybody to replicate the slim, shock-absorbing material he developed for his protective paintball vest. "My legal representative spread out the patent out thus far over and below my laminated foam product's residential properties that a competitor's vest would certainly have to be so hefty the wearer couldn't walk approximately light that the vest falls apart when struck," Phillips states.
On standard, patent authorization takes 3 years and may call for going back as well as forth several times with patent examiners. From the moment a patent application arrives at the USPTO up until it is either provided or abandoned, an invention is covered by patent-pending standing. In the situation of John Marsden, that created Pour 'N Shop, a bartending system of plastic containers, and also put spouts for beverage mixers, a pending patent amounted to a suit of paper armor.
According to Salazar, any kind of inventor has to be all set to do battle. "I'll have my attorney send out a cease-and-desist letter if somebody infringes on my patent. As well as in the end, a patent is just as great as the thickness of your pocketbook.".
4. Examine the Market.
When the patent application is in total, the inventor needs to change from developing a suggestion of developing a service. Rare is the innovative brilliant behind an invention that likewise has business chops-- or the interest-- to look after the manufacture, advertising, and also selling of his production. Even the brightest innovative minds can drop victim to the countless rip-offs and also doubtful invention-promotion companies whose advertisements clutter the Internet. Many expert inventors urge care with any kind of attire that requests for cash upfront to shop your suggestions about.
Tim Leatherman built up important know-how in business and also production by joining with Steve Berliner. John Marsden, the Pour 'N Store designer, partnered early on with service school grad Ed Harrigan. "If I had not had Ed, I probably would not have made it," he says.
Marketing research studies-- perform your own or appoint a market research company-- will certainly provide you data concerning market patterns and customer demographics. There is no substitute, nevertheless, for putting your invention in front of potential consumers as well as manufacturers, providers, and distributors to get a sense of its market value. For the inventor, this is an anxious time.
Salazar is a big believer in showing your items at trade shows. "You'll figure out who is doing what, whether you'll be able to contend and if somebody wants to get what you have," he claims. "However you're additionally dropping your cabinets and every person will see what you've obtained. Your item had better be 95 percent complete. Be ready to answer concerns: Just how huge is the market? That's mosting likely to buy it?".
5. Sell It or Make It.
Inventors make cash in two means: collecting aristocracies by certifying the right to produce their invention or production, distributing, and marketing the invention themselves. Louis J. Foreman, owner, and also the primary executive of Enventys, an item style as well as a design firm in Charlotte, N.C., and writer of The Independent Inventor's Handbook, has personally encountered that problem several times as the holder of 10 licenses as well as has encouraged many inventors as a lead court on the PBS program Everyday Edisons.
Then it's time to ask yourself one more round of questions: First, exists enough upside potential to merit the threat of bringing the item to market on your own? "Consider opportunity costs also," Foreman says. "If you have to quit a job that pays $100,000, can you make enough to counter that?" Second, do you have the financial resources to pull it off? If you don't, then where is the money most likely to originate from? And lastly, do you have the competence to run an organization? "It's one point to come up with a remarkable item, however, are you comfy marketing it, can you distribute it, restore it as well as satisfy orders if Walmart offers you a 5-million-piece purchase order?" Supervisor claims.
No question licensing is the less complicated path to getting an invention to market. It requires less dedication of time as well as up-front resources and frees inventors to do what they do best: invent. However, expedience comes with an expense. Royalty prices on patents-- created on the list price, production run, as well as various other variables-- average less than 2 to 7 percent of retail sales. Still, for a first-time inventor brief on funds and also know-how, a licensing contract can be the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

In a Time of the Unknown and Panic- How Astrology Offers Clues to the Future + The Real Dawn of the Age of Aquarius
By Astromomma
Hey Astromomma fam! I have missed you all! I have wanted to write a piece on the astrological interpretation of the recent corona-virus for days now. I honestly couldn’t write a thing, and literally had writers block for days. Like most of you, I have been in a state of ” information overload”. We are in unprecedented times. Astrology has always been my go to in looking to the higher meaning to everyday affairs. This virus is no exception, so I decided to look to the future of the astrology to perhaps provide some clues and even comfort on what is to come. This is by no means a prediction guide, but hopefully can provide some insight.
When looking at the astrology of the recent months, we had one particular aspect that we have never had in our lifetimes. This would be the Saturn/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn, that occurred on January 12th. This aspect last happened over 500 years ago in 1518. Saturn in astrology, represents: restriction, boundaries, obligations and karma. Pluto in astrology, represents: transformation, power, hidden forces and regeneration. Capricorn, the 10th zodiac sign, represents: the government, big business, the patriarch, destiny and authority.
The Saturn/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn aspect catapulted our awareness of power and control. Or in the case of current times ,the lack of what we really have control with in our lives. This once in a lifetime aspect, which by the way, is still playing out, even though it was exact in January, brought up the limited way we have reacted to fear and “being in charge”. Capricorn likes to stick to the rules and follow protocol. Unfortunately, there is no protocol for a virus that has never been seen or made recognized till now. As we now know, restrictions on our everyday life are now common place. Isolation and quarantine have become the new norm. This is very much a Capricorn tactic of holding on to one last thread of order in a world of panic. Now I am not saying this is wrong or unjust, considering what we are dealing with, just making note of these very Capricorn like tactics.
The true enlightenment of the Saturn/Pluto in Capricorn aspect was realizing that we in fact are “out of control”. Everything is. The illusion that our job or the government could save us is something of the past. In the end, its our own connection to our internal power and source that will always remain. It is actually the surrender to this fact that allows new creative solutions to emerge. This is where we are headed. The real Aquarian age is upon us. Aquarius, is the sign of the people and invention. A true rebel who thrives in the unknowns. Let me explain why this is so critical, not only in our survival but for setting up future generations to come after we are gone.
The outer planets of: Saturn, Jupiter, and Pluto will continue to progress through Capricorn, each one will eventually enter the sign of Aquarius. The outer planets in astrology tend to show activity on a larger scale as they are stay in a sign for a longer time and impact us for months if not years. Saturn, the planet of: restriction, obligation and duty enters Aquarius on March 21st for a brief 3 month transit, before going retrograde, then re-entering Aquarius for good later in the year. Jupiter, the planet of luck, wisdom and expansion, enters Aquarius in December 2020, to stay till the end of 2021. Finally, good ol Pluto, the planet of: transformation, regeneration and power, enters Aquarius in 2024-2044( yes you read that right).
Aquarius, as previously described, is an air sign, that is known to be all about: people, invention, dreams, originality, progress and sweeping change. If there was a time for re-invention, or dealing with the craziness of life, Aquarius, would be the maverick in charge. In true Aquarius style, we are set to come together to unite in a way that has never occurred. Yes, Aquarius rules technology, so many of these “connections” will still continue electronically. The difference now is the awareness that even technology, within its finest, can’t really connect us. It literally took something “beyond our reasoning” to figure this out. That is where the true genius of invention is created. Expect breakthroughs of unprecedented kinds within technologies to help us combat this and similar types of pandemics in the future. With all the craziness of these times, from an astrological standpoint, we are so fortunate to be entering into the Aquarius age. True liberation from our old ways of being is upon us.
In closing, this is just a perspective and I hope it has settled your mind and heart a bit. No one has the answers. It is time to step into a new way of being and thinking as we are now dealing with circumstances and conditions that we have never seen. If anything (my humble opinion) this virus, has the potential to connect us like we have never been connected before. It has shown what truly matters and in many respects, the liberties we so take for granted. As mentioned, the Aquarius age we are now entering is all about realizing ” WE ARE ONE”. Take care of yourself and one another. I will continue to write about future aspects and hope you found this article to be of interest. Sending you all lots of love and well wishes. Remember, we are all in this together. Let us stand united in love and compassion for ourselves and one another.

Unleashed: Life Lessons from a Dog

Unleashed: Life Lessons from a Dog
Dogs are some of my favorite people. Hubby and I have three. They’re all our babies, but Pickle is extra special. I’ve learned a little something about life from her. Hopefully this won’t get sappy.
First, Let Me Tell You About Pickle
If you’re a dog person, you know the type. You look into her eyes and there’s someone there.
At the shelter where we adopted her, they said she was a border collie mix. Perhaps her mother once dallied with a border collie. But Pickle is most definitely a pit bull mix. I wouldn’t have gone looking for a pit; I always thought their hair was too wiry and their faces looked funny to me. I’d hoped to find a dog who’d fill the shoes of my boy Woody, my constant companion for over a decade. Like Woody, Pickle had spots on her snout, and they called to me. She marched right up to us and introduced herself as our new pack member. And so it was decided.
Brains and Brawn
She’s a problem solver. As in, when she was a pup, if I took a work call in the office and closed the door, she got to work eating the drywall to solve the problem of not having eyes on me. If she hears someone approach the front porch, she opens the door. Delivery people and I are equally grateful for the metal screen door, a second barrier to keep her from eating them. She would never, but she gives off that vibe. Also, she ate pillows.
Pickle’s athletic in a way I’ve never been. She doesn’t just play fetch; she earns extra points for style. Throw a high-pop and she’ll probably catch it in the air. Sometimes it bounces off her snoot and she’ll catch it on the bounce. It took a while for her to learn how fetch works. I’ve said, “Pickle, I can’t throw it if you don’t drop it,” thousands of times. She gets it now. Mostly.
She taught me that tennis elbow isn’t for tennis players only. Aside from playing ball, her other favorite game is simply called “Rope.” We go through several of those thick rope toys every year. Many ratty knots of string, formerly known as Rope, litter the backyard gardens. I get side-eye from Pickle if she notices me gathering them for the burn pile. The game goes like this: She holds one end in her teeth. I hold the other end. Then she shakes, tugs, and yanks that rope until I end up with bursitis. Alternatively, the judges will allow one modification to the game. I may fling Rope across the yard, sidearmed, until I end up with bursitis.
So Much Togetherness
Pickle takes togetherness to a whole new level. While she’s not a fan of having a bath, oddly, she and her sister Belle like to get in mine with me. Hubby took a few pics. I’m debating whether my children would die of embarrassment if I post one. Also, I’m writing this on a plane, and don’t want to alarm my seat neighbors. (OK, doing it.) Pickle’s also good for keeping you company while you poop. I have no idea why, but she’ll march right in, climb into the tub (a foot away from the toilet), and just wait. No pics of that, thank goodness.
When I come home from visiting the kids or a business trip, Pickle’s affection levels go through the woof roof. She’s a vocal girl, so there are sound effects as she snuggles into my lap like she did when she was five pounds. (She’s now 72 pounds but that is irrelevant.) Like Heath Ledger’s Joker’s demented grin, her smile is impossible to miss.
The Most Vicious of Breeds
She’s learned to be gentle with all sorts of “babies” except for any kind of toy. When we have baby chicks, she’ll lie down near them and we can stack them on her (weird hillbilly hobbies!) or tuck them into her armpits. She does her best not to chase the older hens. But if one dies and she gets to it first, it’s probably going in her mouth.
Even Nermal the kitty (formerly known as the asshole kitty – thank goodness for neutering!) tries to nurse on Pickle. She’ll look at me with this confused look, like she’s asking how much of this insanity she’s supposed to endure.
A Terrible Traveler
Know how with most dogs, you practically have to spell C-A-R because they’ll lose their ever loving minds if they think they’re going on a ride? Pickle’s like that, too.
Except here’s the thing. She’s the worst car-riding dog ever on the planet. I thought babies could puke. HA. Poop everywhere? Please. Pickle has upped that game to the point no contenders need apply.
How’d I find this out? First, I took her on a six-hour ride to meet my kids. Off and on for two hours, she gacked in the back seat. I’d stop, mop, gag, and get back on the road thinking certainly she was empty. But no. Also, it got into some places in the car that no human can reach. (Apologies in advance to the poor soul who buys this car if I ever sell it.)
Oh, and there was a second instance. We decided that perhaps if she practiced on shorter rides, that would do the trick. During the ride, she seemed only a little more nervous than we were. Once we got to our (thankfully dog-loving and very kind) friends’ house, she let loose like a scene from The Exorcist. Thus ended our transportation experiment.
Unleashed
As she doesn’t travel much, Pickle’s domain is the back yard. She knows every board of the fence, every stick on the ground, and every pile of chicken shit in the clover.
But that girl loves a good walk. All three pups go bananas if they hear their leashes jingle in their place. We start with the leash on, but let it drag on the ground. The dogs magically seem to understand that they’d better be on their best behavior in this situation. One crazy dog move, and we’ll grab the other end, putting a stop to self-walking mode in a heartbeat.
This is the part where it seems my dog is teaching me something about living in midlife that I am learning to grasp fully.
I’ve taken to calling this state of being unleashed. Free to frolick like there’s no leash. Safe from doing utterly dangerous stuff (thanks to decades of accumulated experiences and the wisdom that comes from doing things that don’t work so well). Fully present to nature’s cacophony of sights, sounds, scents, and sensations. Gulping the fresh air, noticing the wave of tree branches, feeling each springy footfall.
There’s no phone. No Zoom. No Slack. Certainly no social media or email. Just my husband’s warm, work-calloused, huge hand holding mine. Sometimes we chat, greeting neighborhood dogs and talking about work and family. Sometimes we stroll arm in arm, silently.
Many times, it’s on these walks when one of us gets a great idea. Every time, we end it thanking each other for nudging us out the door.
Again with Trevor Blake
I really do try not to fan-girl too much. But when someone writes a book that hits me right where I need it most, it’s hard not to talk about it incessantly now and then. In Three Simple Steps he talks a lot about spending time outdoors. This guy started his first business in his forties, has had massive exits, and works five hours a day. (Two of those hours, he’s walking his dogs in the woods!) As a reformed workaholic (i.e. human doing), I have a lot to learn from him. One big area is in how I spend my time.
The three ways I love spending my time unleashed are:
Creating – writing, primarily. Making anything appear in physical form from just an idea is about the most amazing experience ever. Highly creative, productive sessions satisfy my soul so deeply that words fail me.
Puttering. I searched for the best word to describe this regenerative, rejuvenating state. It might involve doing little household, gardening, or chicken-tending tasks. The orderliness, the voluntary nature of puttering is soothing.
Being with. I have never so enjoyed being with my family and few friends more than I do at this point in my life. As a young working mom, I loved every minute with my babies, but I was so aware of their few and fleeting nature that I felt terrified and unable to soak it all in. Plus, exhaustion. As a work-at-home mom of older kids, I felt tremendous pressure to provide for our family. Fear makes a terrible motivator, robbing us of the present. As an empty-nester with an understanding of life’s brevity, I can enjoy “being with” like never before. I see it in the times I go up to visit the kids. And also in the unhurried bathrobe-clad morning coffee sessions on the porch with hubby. I treasure time now.
Life’s Too Short Not to Go Unleashed
Especially in midlife, there’s this sense of turning a page and discovering the rest of the book is blank. We’ve got a lot of new liberties in our lives, and a greater appreciation of what matters most to us. Maybe your schedule is not as flexible as you’d like, but you still have hours each day you can spend doing whatever lights you up. I recommend finding what “unleashed” time means for you – and lavishing it on yourself.
Like Pickle, may we all enjoy each day to the hilt. As I used to tell my old boy, Woody, each morning when we woke up, “We got another day!” How will you use yours?

hi khirsah!!! So i recently realized i wanna be an editor (you make it look so cool) and i was wondering do you have any tips for getting into the publishing industry??? Do you think it can realistically be a part-time job next to another full time position??? Hope this doesn't bother you, thank you!!!!
In the tradition of @hallianna and her awesome Ask a Librarian, I suppose Ask an Editor is open. :)
So! Hello! It is a pretty awesome job if you’re a bibliophile. Before Iget into actual answers and tips, I do need to throw up a couple of warnings tothink about.
1. The publishing industry is highly competitive–especiallyeditorial. There are only a certain number of jobs and a lot of people who wantthose jobs. If you’re serious about being in the industry, you need to really, really want it and be willing to push hard to get your first job. (Once youhave that first job, things do get easier.)
2. There are other avenues into publishing besides editorial. You could be apublicist, for instance–talking to bloggers and media outlets about the booksyou love. Or you can be in marketing. Or you can be in sales. It appears to bea little easier to get entry-level jobs in publicity and marketing and sales (that’s not a dig--my friends in these areas are smarter than I am! There’s just a LITTLE less competition),and quite a few of my friends in these fields took those entry-level jobs withan eye on someday moving to editorial. With only one or two exceptions, theyhave either realized they enjoy their corner of publishing and don’t wantto move over, or they ended up getting stuck in their particular corner andhaven’t been able to make a lateral move. But that exception does prove it canbe done, so this is an avenue that’s open to you…just be aware that it can bedifficult to switch tracks; you have to be really focused on takingadvantage of every opportunity that comes along if you want to make the switch.
3. As with pretty much every job where a lot of people want the position, the pay and hours are terrible. This is especially true at the entrylevel. You’ll never get rich as an editor. Pay varies from company to company, but on average, editors (not senior editors or management-level, but just plaineditors) make between 40k on the low end and 65k on the high end. That may notsound so rough, but considering that a) you probably live in New York and b)you absolutely are working beyond a 9-5 five days a week, and the actual valueof that salary goes down. I have a pile of edits on the table next to me that Iwill be finishing this weekend. It is rare for me to go an entire weekendwithout doing work, and I often stay late or take work home with me to finish.Every vacation I’ve gone on in the past few years, I’ve had edits with me. Soit’s a lot of work for not a lot of compensation.
THAT SAID, if you really love it, it doesn’t feel like work. I know that issuch a cliche, but it can actually be true. There are books that make me wantto tear my hair out, and in those cases…yeah, that’s definitely me working myass off. But there are books that are a delight to work on. When I’m editingthose–or when I’m working with an author to come up with her next series–orwhen I’m hanging out with authors and agents and trying to game theindustry–the hours just fly by. I rarely, rarely have days that feellike they’re dragging.
…again, THAT SAID, editing isn’t just sitting in a room reading books.God, I wish it was. The reason I do so much work on the weekends and weeknightsis because so little of my day is spent, you know, editing. I havemeetings with agents, I have meetings with authors, I have submissions I needto go through, I have acquisitions meetings, I have meetings with marketing andpublicity, I have metadata reviews, I write back cover copy, I meet with theart department to discuss covers: it goes on and on and on. You need to be ableto juggle a lot of different things at once, and you need to be able to workwell with people. My biggest downfall as an editor is that I’m SHY. I’m so shy.Going to parties and schmoozing with agents and authors is nearly impossiblefor me, but it’s part of my job and it sucks. But I need to build thoserelationships or I won’t get offered the great projects when they come along. Also? Negotiating is the worst. Seriously. I hate it. But I have to do it or Ican’t buy those great books.
Also? Living in New York–depending on your personality–can be both amazingand terrible. I have friends who have lived in the city all their lives andlove it, but I am not that person. I have a complicated relationship with NYC.There’s SO MUCH I love about it. But after about ten years, I had to move. Thenoise, the crowds, the smell–it started to get to me, and I realized I was anxiousall the time. I was lucky in that my company has an office outside of NYthat I could transfer to (and I know I can always go back to NY if I want to),but not every publishing house has that. There are other houses outside of NY,but a majority of them are in the city, so if you don’t think you can live inNY for years, then this may not be a great career path for you. (Note thatthere are non-traditional publishers that allow you to work from home. I’ll gointo that in a bit.)
Kinds of editors:
There ismore than one career path for an editor. I am what is called an Acquisitions Editor. That means I formrelationships with agents and authors, I receive books when they go out onsubmission, I weigh the pros and cons of acquiring a book (creating competitiongrids and pulling together profit & loss spreadsheets) and make my casebefore other acquisition editors. If we acquire the book, I then develop itthrough edits.
Sometimesthere is another kind of editor who takes over that part of the job. They arecalled a Development Editor. Theydon’t acquire books of their own; their job is to take the big books and workwith the author on developing the manuscript—editing it for flow, tone, character growth, internal logic, etc. Most fiction publishers smushAcquisitions and Development into one super-editor. For instance, I acquire anddevelop my own books. Many non-fiction or textbook publishers, however, havetwo separate departments. I used tobe a development editor in non-fiction before moving intoAcquisition/Development in fiction. So that path is there, but it tends to bespecialized.
Production Editors are the incredibleperfectionists who keep the books running on schedule. After I’ve finished myediting rounds with an author, I will pass the book on to its productioneditor. They are in charge of tagging the manuscript and flowing it into pages(aka making the word document into the printer-ready book pages we see in apublished book). They’re in charge of either doing copyedits themselves orhiring on a freelance copyeditor and project managing. They keep the artdepartment rolling with the cover, they check the copyedits when they come inand manage the authors as they deal with copyeditor queries, they work withproofreaders after the Advance Reading Copies have been flowed… They wear amillion different hats and need to be on top of everything while having aniron-clad understanding of the Chicago Manual of Style. If you are not a perfectionistwith a great eye for detail and the ability to juggle everyone’s business allat once, I don’t recommend trying to become a production editor.
(While I’mat it, there are also levels of editor. Using my experience with acquisitionsas an example (so others may see things differently), you start as an Editorial Assistant. Basically at thislevel, you’re making copies, you’re answering phones, you’re logging contracts, you’re giving opinions on possible acquisitions, you’re doing slush work, andso on. The work load is crushing. In two houses I’ve worked in, there was anunofficial “crying room” where EAs would go and just let it all out beforeheading back to the unrelenting work. You’ll be overworked even if you reportto the nicest editors of all time, and it’s probably going to SUCK for thefirst couple of months until you get your feet under you and understand howthings work. But then you get promoted to/move to another house and become an Assistant Editor. Things are differentnow. You’re doing fewer grunt work tasks (though you still have some) and morehands-on work with books. You don’t acquire any for yourself yet, but you workwith more senior editors and do what’s called a first read on their books. Inother words, you do a first round of edits so the book is as clean as possible whenthe over-worked editor gets to it. You may do this for several editors. Youhave even more say in acquisitions meetings, and eventually you can startacquiring a couple of projects of your own. Then you are promoted to/move toanother house and become an AssociateEditor. Associate editors are basically acquisitions editors who don’t getpaid as well. I mean. Basically. You’re a junior editor. You have your own listwith maybe a couple of first reads tohelp out senior editors. You’re taking meetings with agents now and thetraining wheels are pretty much off. You have a group of your own authors, youhave your own books to edit and champion, and you’re getting a name in theindustry. After some time, you’re promoted to/move houses to become a fulleditor…where you do pretty much the exact same thing, except with the title andbetter pay. You don’t do first reads for other editors anymore—you have athriving list of your own books with their own deadlines. In fact, you aredrowning in deadlines. Eventually, you have enough “big” projects that you maybe promoted up to Senior Editor. …andthat is the end of the line, career-wise, unless you decide to move into amanagement position, in which case you can become an Editorial Director,Publisher, etc.)
Okay, allthat said, let’s finally answer your questions.
Tips for getting into the publishingindustry:
Education: As with many current-dayjobs, you’re going to need a 4-year degree. The major doesn’t actually matter all that much. I’m notan English major, for instance—I majored in Political Science with an eye ongoing to law school. However, it is veryimportant that you have an instinctual understanding of grammar, punctuation, story structure, and narrative flow. It’s also very important that you have an eye for detail, especially if you’regoing into production over development.
Around 2009or so, I began to notice that many of the incoming EAs had advanced degrees. I’venoticed that many EAs currently have a Masters in Publishing. I’m of twoopinions on those degrees. On the one hand, they certainly teach you the manydifferent corners of publishing. They give you hands-on experience and haveconnections with publishing houses so you can be placed into valuable internships. A Masters ofPublishing does open doors.
Buuuuuut it’salso not necessary, and I’m always a little squeamish about recommending peoplego into debt for something they don’t necessarily need.
Really, that’sgoing to be a personal call for you. If you’re having a difficult time gettingyour foot in the door elsewhere, or you can’t compete for those internships, oryou find you just need that extraboost up, then by all means go for it. I know quite a lot of young editors, publicists, etc. who came to my company directly through the publishingprograms. Hiring interns is an age-old tradition if you prove yourself and arelucky. Buuuuut we also hire people who just graduated college because their collegesalso had great internship programs. We hire people who were agent assistants,or who had other work experience. In the end, experience really does trump further education. Once you have your 4-year, you have to decide foryourself whether you need the additional publishing degree. (Just…remember howlittle you’ll be paid, relatively, and keep an eye on student loan debt.)
Experience: As I said, experiencereally does trump education in this industry. That used to be even more true backa decade or so ago. Internships are your golden ticket—collect as many of themas you can, in as many corners of the industry as you can. It sucks that this is the case, because itdoes give a leg up to people in privileged positions. You either have to beable to live in NY on no money or your college has to have special connections.I won’t lie: it seems like the easiest way in is to attend college in NY andmake sure you collect every internship opportunity available.
But if youcan’t afford to go that route, there are other opportunities. There may be asmall publisher near where you live—find out. There may be an agent who lives near you—find out. Tryto work as a reader or intern or assistant for them. Gain experience any wayyou can. There are also the digital-only houses, who hire freelancers toacquire and edit. Now, sadly, there aren’t as many of these as there used tobe, but there still are a few. Find out who they are and what their employmentrequirements are. Start making connections.
I came intopublishing through non-traditional means with some really weird twists andturns along the way. I recognize that I’m an outlier, but I also really doadvocate for people who can’t afford to take the further education/NY internshiproute. That may be the easier path in, but it’s not the only path, so pleasedon’t lose heart. If this is the career you truly want, you can fight your wayinto it if you search for opportunities, make connections, and don’t stopbeating bushes until you’re in. And once you’re in, don’t stop making sure youare building all the qualifications you need to be in the particular area youwant. If you find an in for, say, textbooks but you want to be in young adultfiction…take it, but also make sure you’re using every chance to build yourqualifications so if an opening in young adult fiction comes along, you canmake that jump. Keep an eye on the market and keep your ambitions honed andfight your way upstream. It can be done.
If all elsefails, nepotism really does work. People vouch for each other all the time—makefriends with young people in the industry so they’ll vouch for you. There’s noshame in using every contact you have.
Can it realistically be a part-timeposition:
In short,no.
Longer: Ifwe’re talking traditional publishing at a traditional house…rarely. Really, really rarely. I actually can think of a couple of people who are part-timeeditorial assistants with a second full-time job. I don’t recommend it foranyone. They are overworked on both sides, underpaid, and it’s only a matter oftime before they have to choose one over the other. There may be other examplesof where people have made it work, but in my experience, it’s a great way towork yourself into a collapse.
Now, I doknow people in publishing who are full-time here with part-time second jobs—usuallyat bookstores, because we’re book nerds. They’re also pretty exhausted, andthey aren’t in higher-level development jobs. They have positions where intheory they end at 5:00 and don’t take work home with them on the weekends. (Isay in theory, because I know for a fact that they take work with them anyway, even though they’re not supposed to.) They also seem pretty stretched thin tome, but like I said…publishing doesn’t pay great, so you do what you’ve got todo. These people have also told me they’re looking forward to the day they canquit their second jobs, so.
Now, non-traditional publishing is anothermatter. If you work as a freelance editor, for instance, you can also have afull-time job. I did this for a while, because I wanted to build my resume towarda particular corner of the market. (So my full-time job was also in publishing, but in theory it could have been anything.) It. Sucked. So. Much. Ass. Evenwith a “part-time” editing job, I was overworked and constantly jugglingdemands. All this plus being overworked on my day job? I spent a lot of timecrying exhausted tears in my shower, friend. I eventually had to stop, becauseI wasn’t doing my authors any favors by running myself ragged…but it got me out of the genre I was inand into the one I wanted to jump to, so ultimately it was worth it. It justfelt like I was slowly melting from the inside for about a year there.
If yourfull-time job isn’t demanding and you still have lots of energy and brain spaceto spare, then you can do it plus part-time freelance work. Even better, youcan do it plus internships to build your resume. Just please monitor yourphysical, mental and emotional health while you’re doing it and know when tocall it off. ALL publishing jobs are hard work—work that we love, but still,so, so hard. Make sure you’re not stretching yourself too thin and makingyourself ill.
To wrap up:
1)     There are different paths in publishing. Learnthem and know which one you want.
2)     It’s super competitive. Make yourself as stronga competitor as possible, gaining experience and contacts wherever you can.
3)     It’s going to suck at first. Living in NYC on around29-30k is hard as hell. The work is hard as hell. It gets better, but makecontacts/friends who can help you along the way. Find the crying room if youneed it. Try not to stress yourself into illness.
4)     Keep an eye on the market—it changes! Constantly!—andkeep abreast of new developments. If you’re not in a corner of the market youwant to be, keep making yourself the best candidate you can and take everyopportunity to move where you want. It’s hard, but seriously—every. Opportunity. You never know which is the one that will get you there.
5)     There are non-traditional options, and they maybe close to where you are now. See if any agents or small presses are in yourarea. See if any digital-only houses are hiring. Try to get gigs as a reader,or an internship, or an assistant job that may lead you to where you want togo. Just be careful not to let yourself get stuck in a position you don’t want—keepeyes open and keep moving.
6)     Even when you get to where you want to be, trynot to grow complacent. Publishing is in major flux. Houses are closing linesand laying off people who have been there 20 years or more. Other houses areopening. It’s a crazy time, but it’s also exciting to be on the crest of somethingnew. Be smart about where you choose to work and, if you’re working for a companythat feels unstable or like it may be going under, KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN foropportunities to move as early as you can.
I’m happy toanswer any follow-up questions. Hopefully this was helpful.

what I’ve read 2017 (books 7-10)
Sex on Six Legs: Lessons on Life, Love, and Language from the Insect World, Marlene Zuk
A Time to Dance, Padma Venkatraman
Big Girls Don’t Cry: The Election that Changed Everything for American Women, Rebecca Traister
Get it Done When You’re Depressed: 50 Strategies for Keeping Your Life on Track, Julie A. Fast and John D. Preston
or, God made bugs kinky; we explain so many things through interpretative dance, maybe it’s time for interpretative dance to be explained; no not that election the other election;  and this book about depression made me more depressed
Nonfiction: Sex on Six Legs: Lessons on Life, Love, and Language from the Insect World, by Marlene Zuk (1/15)
Despite the first part of the title, which is the only part I read before I immediately checked this book out, Sex on Six Legs is in fact about much more than just insect sex. The majority of the book focuses on other aspects of insect communities and relationships, as Zuk takes a plethora on nonsex angles to examine the intricate interdependence of these highly sophisticated social structures. You have to read most of the book to get to the sex, which is good because all of the book is interesting and gosh I’d never thought about the complexities of insects this way and boy does it make you question how humans consider ourselves so unique in our complexity when insects are just as complex while also being staggeringly diverse in that complexity, yes, all of this is true, but I’m not here to lie to you. My main takeaway from this book has to be that, yall, bugs fuck so weird.
  Yall.
  Yall.
They fuck the weirdest. Bugs fuck like xenophiles aren’t thinking big enough. Bugs read your Mass Effect fanfic and they aren’t impressed by your sex scenes. Gimme them vaginas that store multiple deposits of sperm so that the female can select whichever she wants to fertilize her eggs. Gimme them males who answer the question “what that dick do” with “scoop out my competitor’s sperm, obviously, while ejaculating like someone dropped a mentos in diet coke.” Yall, I find out that ant queens mate once, in a midair orgy as they fly to their new hive, and that’s their store of sperm for the rest of their lives. There’s competitive secret egg fucking. There’s exploding penises. There’s a lot of death. Insect sex (Insex? no. no let’s not go with that) is as diverse and otherworldly as insect social structures are, and a book like this should be mandatory reading for anyone doing science fiction or fantasy world building. The natural world is weirder than your imagination. And Zuk is a good writer to escort you through it, with clear expertise paired with a minimum of jargon, a sense of the best insect anecdotes, and the kind of dry humor you often find in science writing about traditionally esoteric or disgusting subjects—a convivial kind of concession that, yes, this is what I’ve dedicated my life to studying, yes, I can see how that might seem an odd choice, no, I’m not embarrassed in the slightest, now please follow me as we find out what that dick do.
Fiction: A Time to Dance, by Padma Venkatraman (1/16)
I struggle with books written in verse, largely since I spend the book wondering why it isn’t just written in prose. If I’d noticed A Time to Dance was entirely in verse when I’d picked it up at the library, I might not have brought it home. Having said that, small freeverse chapters do allow you different opportunities for writing style and flow, and Venkatraman takes advantage of both the possibility for increased lyricism and increased fragmentation to convey dance and trauma. The novel centers on Veda, a teenage dancer of Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance. Her career is derailed after an accident after a competition costs Veda her right leg. The book covers Veda’s relationship with her body, her family, and her dance, as the accident forces her to dig deeper into the spirituality behind physicality. It’s dance as dance and dance as prayer, which works well (I grudgingly admit) as verse.
Nonfiction: Big Girls Don’t Cry: The Election that Changed Everything for American Women, by Rebecca Traister (1/29)
I’m going through the books in the order I started them, rather than the order I finished them. Usually they’re the same thing. Sometimes, as is the case here, the book takes a long time to get through. It turns out that this January I was not really feeling reading a book examining the impact of the 2008 election. Especially when the first half was, “Why did Hillary Clinton lose?” Traister opens the book talking about her own conversion from a John Edwards supporter (hey remember when we thought he wasn’t a piece of shit?) who thought Clinton was too compromised a candidate to a Clinton supporter sobbing in public the night Hillary conceded. She talks about the transition of Hillary Rodham to Hillary Clinton and the decades she spent as the lightening rod of feminism in politics, from taking her husband’s name some years after marriage because it was hurting him in the polls, to why Hillary Clinton has always been her most politically popular when she is suffering personal lows. And post 2016, it’s fascinating studying Clinton’s genderless (or probably more accurately, masculine) 2008 campaign, where after a career of focusing on women’s issues, Clinton moved them to the background, to her detriment.
But it’s not a book about Hillary Clinton. She is the largest figure in it, but Traister analyzes Sarah Palin’s brand of conservative womanhood, the Obama bros and their gender troubles, Michelle Obama (who comes off amazingly in this book, Traister straight up admits that when she was reporting on the campaign she had to call her editor and be like, “I can’t report on this woman any more, I now love her too much”; the analysis of Michelle as reluctant political wife with a complicated relationship to her country is one of the standout sections of the book), media figures like Katie Couric and Rachel Maddow, and one of the parts I found most interesting, Elizabeth Edwards. Elizabeth Edwards, Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton form an interesting tryptic of the new political wife—women who are as accomplished as their husband, who are routinely credited as the brains of the partnership, and who struggle publically with traditional femininity (which is especially complicated for Michelle Obama as a black woman) and political ambition.
Nonfiction: Get it Done When You’re Depressed: 50 Strategies for Keeping Your Life on Track, by Julie A. Fast and John D. Preston (1/18)
I picked up this book because I was starting school again, because I was feeling mature and aware of my problems, because I’ll pick up anything even self-help related. (Sidenote: self-help is my number one guilty pleasure. I’ll read self-help books on whatever, problems I have and problems I don’t. I’ve read about raising your child who has ADHD, about dating after divorce, separating your life from narcissist parents, dating multiple men at once, and reentering the workforce after decades of teaching in academia. My ultimate wish fulfilment is anything that promises me a solution in 300 pages or less. )
The book’s chapters, each a different strategy for being productive while depressed, are a few pages long and rigidly formatted: an explanation of a problem caused by depression, a testimony from someone with depression, a testimony from author Julie Fast on her own experiences with depression, an explanation from Dr. John Preston as to why depressed brains do this, and some advice on implementing the advice. Most of the advice made sense—keep a schedule, get sleep, find the place that you work the best—while other made sense but were also a deep affront to my soul—namely if you can’t do something, just ask someone else to do. The visceral horror I felt reading this advice has forced me to confront how I think about my own and other people’s mental illness. (also an affront: maybe drink less caffeine, which I’m gonna pretend I didn’t read because I’ve been trying to drink less caffeine because it makes me jittery and now I can’t stop taking naps which are taking over my days, so I think jitteriness is less of a detriment than the exhaustion, and by the way, this sequence of trial and error body balancing is perfect microcosm for trying to cope with depression.)
I’ve had a check tire light on in my car for weeks now, a light that, oh boy, I should do something about, but every aspect of checking the tires, from finding the pressure gauge and actually using it, to figuring out the steps to take if there actually is a problem, seems like so much effort that it’s easier to ignore the problem. Which translates to, it’s easier to force my hand by making the situation a crisis than it is to motivate myself to do preventative maintenance. It’s occurred to me that I could ask Dad to do this for me. Or ask him to at least come with me to the garage. Why don’t I? Answer: because I am capable of handling this tire if I function at my best and make it a priority, because Dad might ask how long this has been a problem and I’ll have to admit that it’s been weeks, because a serious car problem would drain what’s left of my savings, because Dad will be so ashamed of his lazy adult daughter that he’ll never respect or love me again (I never said these were all reasonable excuses.) So I don’t ask him to help with this. And I think less of the author for admitting that she would.
It’s more acceptable to hate yourself for your mental illness than it is to hate other people, because self-hatred at least allows you to be both victim and victimizer. But I judge people for procrastinating on the things they know they should be doing while I strenuously avoid all my tasks, I judge people for their depression while I keep bursting into tears in parking lots because I don’t want to get out of my car, I judge people for their anxiety while I crank up youtube videos of hand massages so I don’t need to focus on my own thoughts, and I excuse my judgment of others by arguing that I’m no harder on them than I am on myself. And if (when) I am, it’s because clearly I am putting in the work to handle my problems while they aren’t. So I disliked Fast for most of this book. I hated her anecdotes and her honesty. When she talked about how her depression had lost her relationships and profession opportunities, I quickly listed all the ways that way my depression was better than that depression. The book took me longer than I expected to read; it’s hard to speedread when what you’re reading makes you feel ugly.
I had my epiphany around strategy 45: I hated how she talked about depression in the present tense. I hated how she had a book’s worth of strategies for coping with depression, and she was still depressed. I didn’t (and don’t) want to cope with my depression. I want to not be depressed. But she’s still depressed. And I’m still depressed. And maybe I’m going to be depressed forever. In which case, it’s good for me to remember that loving myself and loving other people are one and the same. Empathy for me is not a high-road, moralistic treatise on how we should behave; it’s simply that when I make the strong effort to love people who do and think the same ways I wish I didn’t, I get better at loving myself. Maybe more useful than the entire book’s worth of strategies was the one that I ended with, my strategy number 51: Forgive us our depression, as we forgive those who are depressed.
Someone please come help me check my tire.

The first episode of GOH aired yesterday and here I am with a review already! Are you impressed? Don’t be it’s mostly pictures and I really don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up this schedule. But I was this week! Hourray for small victories.
I gotta say, last season’s Tower of God introduced me to webtoon fandoms and I am a little…intimidated at the thought of reviewing this series, as the following seems even more…passionate. Still we’re all friends here so let me tell you what I thought of the first episode of The God of Highschool.
I have to admit, tis series was pretty highly anticipated and after reading a whole bunch of tweets about how much better this adaptation was than Tower of God, my expectations were pretty high. And they got readjusted really quickly. The best way I can summerize my thoughts for those first few seconds is: I thought this show would have had a better budget. It’s not that the art is bad but it’s fairly traditional and pretty simple. It looks much more like an old school anime if that’s what you’re into but it’s not very detailed and light and shadows are rather dull. Also the CG is just not very good. Mostly obvious in the water but also noticable in background building during city chase scenes.
I will say this though, the art style and designs are way more faithful to the webtoon than ToG was, so there is that. But odly, the narrative isn’t exactly, I’ll get to that later, you’ll see what I mean.
We didn’t get that much in the way of exposition. A few short scenes tell us we’re in a world similar to ours but there something more going on. Something very powerful, I could even say godly! We are then introduced to main protagonist Jin in a short dream/flashback that shows us he had a somewhat sad past were he was isolated. Also known as standard shonen protagonist childhood. I should say that dream sequence was more visually interesting than the rest of the episode to me.
We immediately learn that Jin is a spunky young man with a string sense of justice who will come to the aid of those in need (cough) when he decides to take a detour, despite being in a rush, to hel an old lady who got her purse stolen. In short order, we get a brienf introduction to Mira, an innocent looking youg lady who is actually a powerful swordswoman with a bit of a temper (i.e. main female supporting chara) and Han who is a very strong and stoic fellow with a good heart (i.e. sidekick). I know how snarky this sounds but these ae really the most common shonen archetypes out there. I’m going somewhere though, please bear with me.
You gotta understand that although episode 1 of The God of Highschool was giving me all sorts of déjà vue all over again (I had not read the webtoon but I did read all the way to the events of episode 1 before writing this review, out of curiosity) because of how many tropes it was embracing whole heartedly, I was still enjoying myself if a little mindlessly. The art wasn’t rally my cup of tea and the opening sequence reminded me a lot of Pet. I think I’m the only one who saw that show. But it was o.k.
And then that chase scene hit and I thought to myself, Oh hey there’s the budget!
It seems that detailed designs and seemless CG may have been sacrificed a bit in favour of high speed animation and considering just how much mouvement there was just in this episode, I gotta say, it was probably a good initiative. Once things got moving they hardly stopped and they moved a lot! I think I may have noticed a bit of jegged mouvement here and there, where it seemed like they may have skipped a frame or two but it was rare and considering how much action was present I can’t really blame the show. Besides, it really doesn’t matter as the camera work and framing during these dynamic scenes was just plain fantastic. Possibly some of the best motion framing I have seen in the past 5 years. It made the simplpe experience of watching a chase scene so exhilirating that I completely forgot about any misgivings I may have started with.
Also I laughed at the blatan product placement (lower right screencap above). It was just such tacky fun that I couldn’t help but admire the self aware nature of it.
Now when I say that the narrative of this first episode of The God of Highschool is less faithful to the webtoon that Tower of God was, what I mean is that the first episode of Tower of God was pretty much chapters 1 to 4 (I think maybe 6) of the webtoon. There was a bit of added material but it followed the narrative beats pretty closely. Whereas, just like the visuals of this first episode of God of Highschool are favouring action, so is the storyline. The webtoon opens with a lot more situating exposition and bacgrounds for the main characters, which have completely been skipped over in this first episode. I assume that it’s just a matter of reordering the narrative and we will get back to them in the coming weeks. And once again, I think that was a very smart move on the part of the adaptation. It really thre us in the thick of thngs and it makes me want to know what happens next much more than an establishing episode would have.
I should also say, the first few chapters of God of Highschool that I read were very well written. I can’ speak to how the actual story develops or anything like that but as an opener, this was some impressive stuff.
So sure, the designs aren’t really my thing. Backgrounds and mob characters are sort of boring. The colours are pretty average but none of that matters because the series abosultely shines once it’s in high mouvement and it’s almost constantly in mouvement. And yes both the characters and the establishing plot seem to be classic shonene tropes so far but that also doesn’t matter, because classic shonen tropes are super fun.
And that’s realy what my take away was from this first episode. I was fun! I don’t think I can ask for anything more. Did you guys watch this first episode? What did you think?
The God of Highschool ep. 1 – Anticipation The first episode of GOH aired yesterday and here I am with a review already! Are you impressed?

Unit 12 - Task 1
Unit 12 - ‘be it!’
In the games design industry, I would like to work in design, with some story writing and audio work on the side. Design appeals most to me as it is the area I am the most confident in and enjoy most, however I also enjoy the audio and story side of games design and would also like to partake in that side of games design.
Animator
Designers in games design focus on the animation, character design, environment design and the overall effect the game has on the player. An animator in the games industry are responsible for the portrayal of behaviour and movement. Usually, this is applied to make give life to game characters and creatures, but sometimes animations are also applied to other elements such as objects, scenery, vegetation and environmental effects.
Animators must portray movement and behavior in an efficient and effective way which makes best use of the game engine’s technology, within the platform’s limitations. It is often necessary to restrict the number of key frames used or the number of characters that can appear on the screen at a time. Animators work closely with programmers and artists to create the best balance between smooth seamless movement and optimized performance on the target platform.
Game production is collaborative, and animators work as part of the art department team. Using the objects, models and most importantly characters created by 3d artists, animators define their movements and behaviors and apply them using the animation tools and techniques provided by the selected 3d animation software package.
They are also usually responsible for the technical processes of rigging and skinning of the characters, which involves creating an underlying structure rather like the bones of a skeleton and attaching appropriate body parts to each bone. This makes the animation process itself a lot more efficient.
 Requirements of an animator;
·         Have knowledge of traditional and computer 2d and 3d animation techniques.
·         Be creative and imaginative.
·         Have knowledge of full motion video (fmv).
·         Be able to work as part a team and on your own initiative.
·         Be able to take responsibility for organizing your work within the production schedule, managing files and meeting deadlines.
·         Understand the production process.
·         Be able to communicate effectively with other teams and disciplines is essential.
·         Have some knowledge of programming, ideally.
·         Be able to reveal attitude, emotions and mood through a character’s movement and behavior.
·         Understand the timing and appearance of human and animal movement and facial expressions and be able to lip sync.
·         Be able to create memorable characters that will appeal to players.
·         Have spatial awareness and a feel for movement over time.
·         Have knowledge of the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures.
This has always been the specs of an animator; however, the original guidelines are more basic, mainly only needing experience in the area and good team work.
If I was to become an animator, I would need to improve my model manipulation skills and develop my general art, getting quicker at producing work. I would start an ideas book, to write all my ideas into and then work and develop these into work, even if there are only a few good and usable ideas. Any inspiration is helpful, and I feel as though if I ever lack in ideas, this would help greatly.
 Game artist
Artists create the visual elements of a game, such as characters, scenery, objects, vehicles, surface textures, clothing, props and even user interface components. They also create concept art and storyboards which help communicate visual elements during the pre-production phase. Some games try to look as realistic as possible while others aim for a more stylized look. It is the artist's job to model and texture characters and objects to achieve the desired result. The look of a game is often a significant factor in its success, second to its playability. There are various specialisms within the art department, including 3d object modelling, character design, textures, and environments. Each artist has responsibility for the creation of art assets with a game, but there is also a lot of movement between roles. They might also create artwork for packages, promotional materials and websites. Artists work under the supervision of the lead artist. They create art assets according to the game specification and they are usually responsible for managing those assets. Some artists specialize in the design of human figures and characters, others in buildings and landscapes, and some in textures for 3d objects. Artists do a range of jobs which have different responsibilities and techniques, including:
Concept artist - usually using traditional materials (e.g. Pen and paper) rather than computer software, the concept artist sketches ideas for the game worlds, characters, objects, vehicles, furniture, clothing, etc. They also suggest level designs, colour schemes, and the mood and feel of the game. Although not involved in creating the actual game art, their concept will shape the look of the game
3d modeler - builds the characters, objects and environments of the game, including life forms, scenery, vegetation, furniture, and vehicles, etc. They need to balance visual richness and detail with the limitations of the game's technology
2d/texture artist - creates and applies textures to characters, environments and game items, such as the surfaces of walls and floors of buildings. This is also a highly skilled area, which requires considerable knowledge of lighting, perspective, materials and visual effects
Requirements of a game artist;
·         Be able to draw from life.
·         Have knowledge of anatomy and architecture.
·         Be able to convey facial expressions and emotions.
·         Have a flair for colour, composition, perspective, modelling and texturing techniques, lighting and mood.
·         Have skills in comic book art and/or storyboarding.
·         Be able to work as part of a team and independently.
·         Be imaginative and creative.
·         Pay close attention to detail and have strong powers of observation.
·         Have good communication skills.
·         Be able to work to a style guide.
·         Have knowledge of the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures.
·         Have an art portfolio demonstrating a range of work and originality of style.
The requirements of a game artist have increased by a lot over the years, as the technology available is more advanced and the in-game graphics expectation is much greater than it was 10 years ago. Nowadays, games are expected to be crisp and clear, with next to no error.
If I was to become a game artist, I would need to really improve my art skills and become more acquainted with different software and produce pieces at a quicker pace. When I’m away from home and college, I will start to carry a small sketch book around, so if I get any sudden ideas, I can make a note for future references.
 Lead artist
The lead artist is responsible for the overall look of the game. Working with the game designer and lead programmer, the lead artist devises the game’s visual style and directs the production of all visual material throughout the game’s development. They produce much of the initial artwork themselves, setting creative and technical standards and determining the best tools and techniques to use. In conjunction with the producer, the lead artist puts together and manages the team of artists and animators who produce most of the art assets for the game (including environments, characters, objects and effects) under the lead artist’s direction. The lead artist must ensure that the art and animation team works to schedule and within budget. They also work closely with the programming team to make sure that all art and animation assets produced can be easily imported into the game engine. The styling is often communicated through concept art. The lead artist will supervise, if not actually undertake, the production of material which illustrates the visual atmosphere and graphical design for the game. They also research and test out different modelling, texturing, animation, rendering and lighting techniques and tools appropriate to the games technology, with input from the lead programmer. They supervise the team’s output from a creative and technical point of view, and also ensure that the work gets done according to budget and schedule, alongside the game’s producer, anticipating problems and planning for any contingencies. They are also usually responsible for overseeing any outsourced art production.
 Requirements of a lead artist;
·         Be able to inspire and motivate a large team of creative talent.
·         Have a distinctive and original style.
·         Understand all the roles within the art department and of any outsourced contractors.
·         Be able to build good working relationships with other departments.
·         Be able to communicate clearly with senior managers, designers, programmers, testers and other personnel in their own language.
·         Have excellent communication skills, including tact and diplomacy.
·         Understand of the technology used in game design and development, its capabilities and limitations.
·         Have traditional and computer art and design skills.
·         Be able to manage people, time and resources.
·         Have knowledge of 2d and 3d modelling and animation packages.
·         Have conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
·         Have a passion for games and a good understanding of what makes a game visually appealing and fun to play.
·         Have knowledge of the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures.
The requirements of a lead artist have stayed within the same guidelines when it concerns managing the team, however the expectation for a good game with attention grabbing plot and great graphics is always increasing, as different game studios produce more and more lifelike games, setting the bar higher each time.
If I was to become a lead artist, I would need to brush up on my people skills and become better at managing groups of people. I would also need to be constantly getting up to date with the target markets expectations, be this through questionnaires, surveys or other ways. This way, I would be able to manage a group into creating a game that holds people’s attention and doesn’t feel outdated.
 Level editor
The level editor defines and creates interactive architecture for a segment of a game, including the landscape, buildings and objects. They must be true to the overall design specification, using the characters and story elements defined by the game designer, but they often have considerable freedom to vary the specific look and feel of the level for which they are responsible. They define the environment, general layout of the spaces within the level, and lighting, textures, and forms. The define the characters and objects involved, whether they are player-controlled or non-player characters, and any specific behaviours associated with the characters and objects. They also develop the gameplay for the level, which includes the challenges that the characters face and the actions they must take to overcome them. The architecture helps to define those challenges by presenting obstacles, places to hide, tests of skill, and other elements to explore and interact with. The setting and atmosphere devised by the level editor can also give the player clues about different ways of progressing though the level and the game. The level editor first sketches ideas on paper or using 2d drawing software. They must imagine the playing experience, putting themselves in the position of the player, mapping out all the possibilities. The ideas are then worked out in 3d and tested in the game engine, which produces further ideas. In consultation with the programmers and artists, the level editor draws up a detailed inventory of level ‘assets’ (all the objects and programming requirements needed to make the level run in the game in its final form). Every asset can impact on the game’s performance and the level editor must understand the technical constraints to which the team is working, e.g. There may be a limit on the number and complexity of objects that can be displayed on screen at any one time.
Requirements of a level editor;
·         Have good spatial and layout design skills.
·         Have knowledge of 3d modelling and a firm grasp of game design principles.
·         Can visualise layouts.
·         Have a practical understanding of programming and scripting language to work closely with artists and programmers.
·         Have it skills and competence in the use of world-editing tools.
·         Have knowledge of different platforms.
·         Be very well organised.
·         Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
·         Be able to accept and give direction.
·         Be imaginative and creative.
·         Have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
·         Pay close attention to detail and be able to evaluate quality.
·         Have a passion for games and knowledge of game design theory.
·         Have knowledge of the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures.
The requirements of a level editor have increased over the years, as the game levels in most modern games are open world and require a lot of detail in small areas. Modern levels aren’t expected to have only plot but also collectibles, side quests and other essential game factors. Levels need to be easy to navigate, however if it is made too easy the level seems boring, or if it is too complex it makes the audience lose interest or become frustrated.
If I was to become a level editor, I would need to really improve my level layouts as well as the rate of which I produce different levels. I should keep a sketch book of possible level designs, as this could help with future projects.
 Technical artist
The technical artist acts as a bridge between the artists and programmers working on a game. They ensure art assets can be easily integrated into a game without sacrificing either the overall artistic vision or exceeding the technical limits of the chosen platform. The role is a relatively new one for the games industry but is becoming increasingly important as consoles and pc hardware becomes more complex. Despite their technical knowledge, the technical artist works part of the art team, working closely with the lead artist and the creative director, as well as the lead programmers. Their main areas of responsibility include setting up and maintaining the art production workflow, and making decisions about which art packages and tools a studio should use. They are also charged with investigating new techniques and implementing them. The job often includes a teaching element, with the technical artist sharing their knowledge via training and mentoring sessions with other artists. The technical artist is not typically directly involved in the creation of game art assets. Instead they act in more of an advisory position, setting up the systems of production as well as dealing with problems as they arise. One large part of the job involves keeping up to date with changes in technology, both hardware and software, as well as new techniques. They are expected to be able to create custom tools to improve the efficiency of their team. This is usually carried out using the scripting languages included in the main modelling and animation packages. They oversee work in response to feedback or debugging complex assets such as character skeleton rigs and skinning systems. They also research and oversee the implementation of rendering techniques such as normal and specular maps, particle systems and pixel shaders.
Requirements of a technical artist;
·         Be able to show technical proficiency in areas such as lighting and rendering, texturing, and graphics-related programming languages such as shaders.
·         Have extensive knowledge of art packages ranging from modelling to texturing and special effects.
·         Be able to customise art packages so that they are as streamlined as possible for specific projects.
·         Be able to work well as part of a team.
·         Have good communication and people management skills, to train and mentor others.
·         Be able to work with minimum supervision.
·         Have excellent organisational skills.
·         Be able to think creatively to resolve technical challenges and limitations.
·         Have knowledge of console hardware architecture.
·         Be highly skilled in the use of 3d graphics software.
·         Be able to anticipate the needs of the artists to streamline their productivity.
·         Have knowledge of the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures.
The requirements of a technical artist constantly change over time, as the technology available is more advanced. The specs of games has also changed over the years,
If I was to become a game artist, I would need to really improve my art skills and become more acquainted with different software and produce pieces at a quicker pace. When I’m away from home and college, I will start to carry a small sketch book around, so if I get any sudden ideas, I can make a note for future references.

Health and Weight Loss - Perfect Partners
How to Stay Healthy?A simple and very effective solution how to introduce healthy food to your familyIf 10 years ago somebody would have told me that fruits are very healthy…….
Healthy for everyday’s eating as an excellent source of vitamins…. And even necessary – eating fruits is A MUST as a natural medicine for human body…. I would have replied: “Yes, indeed! I know this very well! I love fruits and eat fruits every day!”But with age (as early as after 25 y.o.) I began to develop problems of health: BIG problems – that brought with them many troubles, sleepless nights and worrying headaches. As well as small problems that obviously decrease my work productivity, made me less outgoing and rip me off for many hours of enjoying the good state of physical health when everything was OK.
In general, all these health problems took lots of my time and money… Until I realised the simply secret that……… Even during all my adult life, I never developed a well-deserved appreciation as well as correct attitude towards fruits and vegetables. I am not afraid to name the reason bluntly – usually it is a lack of knowledge and lack of understanding.
Only then I understood that in reality I used to take fruits ‘for granted’. That time the benefit of my ‘eating fruits’ was diminished to the very minimum as I eat only 1-2 fruits per day, usually after lunch or at breakfast time. If I happened to become hungry in between meals or on my way to work, home etc, I would rather prefer to have a light snack of a sandwich or a roll, but definitely not fruit. While it is the FRUITS that MUST be eaten on empty stomach – to derive more benefit as fruits are recommended to eaten separately without other food.
If…. If earlier I would have been told that I don’t use fruits for sustaining my good health, I would’ve replied angrily “No, what do you mean! Indeed I use fruits! But my life- style is very busy, lots of hard work, endless stresses and, on top of all, poor ecology. These all affect my health very negatively. And can fruits do anything about that????!”
But now, looking to past, I must and I will admit: “Fruits and vegetables CAN dramatically change one’s health. Especially if one knows HOW, WHEN AND WHAT TO USE for a particular health problem…..In conclusion, the major reason of “Not going GREEN” and therefore, not benefitting enough from the Nature’s generous treasures is still hidden in the LACK of correct presentation of this valuable information!
Then even if parents don’t value these blessings of mother-nature, then how can one blame children for refusing to eat these Nature’s treasures while even those who want to lead a healthy life style, don’t have a full picture of WHAT vegetables and fruits can do to one’s body and mind!
Even if we have a basic picture such as: “carrot is good for eye-sight, oranges – to boost immune system, watermelon provides excellent cleansing effect”, still, in order to convince not only somebody but even yourself, we have to get more useful information. And, usually, this “info” comes in a form of boring statistic facts or dull, grey nutrition tables.
Stop! Please, stop for a moment! Don’t you understand that even you and I, like any other adult of any age, won’t pay sufficient (enough) attention to any information if it presented in a such ‘mind-numbing’ (dreary, uninteresting) form. This is not the method to encourage, rather on the contrary, it is a highly effective and quicker way to make somebody bored!
Nevertheless, then what to say about young children and their tiny inquisitive minds, whose learning skills performance is best when powered by bright, colourful associations and sharp fantasy-world imagination. No doubt, anyone will agree with me, no matter what age we are, we all would prefer to read text that are combined with attractive, eye-catching images! That’s why the skill of colour-science is an independent science. And so many interesting books, research papers, scientific proof and related articles are dedicated to colours’ physiological effect on people’s mind.
Also, the second emphasis is on how the reading material is presented. Do not generalize, but personalize. It is no longer a secret that the best, TOP read articles (with highest popularity and read coefficient) in magazines, newspapers etc. are stories with a main character i.e. a narration, with main hero, with sequential unwinding of a story: with a beginning, intervening occurrences and culmination, even if this is just a short narration about an event or product. If any readable material is interlinked with an individual and his/her personal experiences, it is always easier to read, easier to accept and easier to remember. That’s why we always read testimonials, as they come from somebody and are put in simple words that’s easy to digest.
As for myself, until the age of 30 I never showed much interest towards vegetables and, I am ashamed to say, even some fruits. And it is not that I wasn’t aware of healthy eating, of ‘greens’ benefits – indeed I heard and read now and then about it, but it didn’t create that bright image in my memory that would lead me on and be my ‘guiding star’ in my and my family’s eating plan (schedule).
Luckily enough, on my 30-th birthday I received not only best wishes and E-cards, but among numerous emails there was an unusual email from one of my friends. It contained a large juicy image of a pineapple, and a link with the unusual words
Healthy Birthday! A gift for your that hidden in… pineapples!??The link leads to an article, actually more correctly, to an entertaining story about pineapples. In a light form this story tells about a mother and her little son. And, at the same time, it is a very informative conception about benefits of pineapples (and fruits in general) that convey information to the HEART of the reader. This method not just narrates, it ensures that the one who reads (or listens to) will ABSORB, HEAR and REMEMBER the important information about this story!
Simple words make their way to the reader’s mind and heart, creating in his/her conscious ‘live’ images of a little sickly boy, his concerned mother and a deliciously juicy pineapple. The story also has a moral (and even business-minded) value as it concludes on a brief note that this little boy decided to help other people to stay healthy, and when he grew up, he became a medical scientist and businessman – he started a unique fruit-vegetables shop in his small town.
…To continue my own path to Healthy Food…Being inspired by this first touch of this new approach and introduction to fruits and vegetables to the Mind and Heart, I was very excited to read the next story from the same book. Then the following, then all other stories which were available to be read online on the website (stories from the new book that is available in bookstore at amazon: The Storyteller’s guide to health food).
I can remember, the second story was about beetroot (again a very unique fairytale-like story about 3 sisters – beetroot of different types, but with lots of information, tips and even recipes). The third story was on watermelon. That particular story I happened to read in summer and this time I read it aloud to my friends because I wanted to check what their reactions would be. The effect can talk for itself – my friends’ appreciation towards watermelon and, of course, later towards all fruits and vegetables increased immensely. Moreover, they enthusiastically copied the story and shared it with their family, loved ones and even with neighbors.
Fitness
No need to say that acquaintance with this brilliant ideas and innovative method exposed in these wonderful books of the project KindBook became a turning point not only in my life, but in life of my family and friends. Moreover, gradually and steadily it opened a new door in the lives of all those who are concerned about health and the value of healthy food.
If you are about to make your first step in HEALING yourself and HEALING our planet: leave those ‘boring’ %-tables for later! Firstly try to kindle in people a flame of interest in Nature’s gifts to humanity! Heal yourself, then Heal others. With this unique approach make them enthusiastic to increase their energy, productivity and health! And to teach our future generation how to be the best citizens of our Planet Earth: kind, healthy, successful! And, last but not least! Remember the GOLDEN RULE: the more goodness you bring into the lives of others, the more goodness will come back to you!

Spotlight Series: The Stoned Housewife Maggie May
If you spend any time on Instagram looking at feeds to do with cannabis you will eventually find yourself on the page belonging to Maggie May AKA The Stoned Housewife. Maggie bills herself as a Metaphysics + Cannabis Oracle, a Frequency Healer, Shadow Alchemist and a Metaphysical Practitioner. Her website is a treasure trove of products, blogging and information related to energy, astrology and of course cannabis. She offers events, tarot readings, a podcast and a little online store full of beautiful things that would make a perfect gift for a friend or to yourself.
"I am a cosmic incarnation and a channel of divine light. I am here to help you understand you are the same!"  -- The Stoned Housewife
Tell the readers a little bit about your website, what do you do there and what does “Where metaphysics meets cannabis" mean?
Where Metaphysics meets Cannabis is a way for me to bring the ancestral healing modalities of the Eastern world, that are rooted deeply in the energetic foundations of life, with a widely western view of acknowledgment of Cannabis medicine. My work as a Metaphysical healer for the past decade has led me down a road I wouldn't have believed when I was being raised in the conservative south. The Stoned Housewife has become a platform for me to creatively express the experience I have received through Reiki and working with Crystal Spirits, among many other things. I like to say I am getting stoned on two levels. I create content for people who want to get into Metaphysical realm and already have a base of Cannabis knowledge. There are so many websites out producing education on Cannabis but very little education on the energetic realm.
I’m very intrigued by some of the services you offer, including tarot readings, how long have you been reading cards and how did you get into it?
Thank you so much, I have been practising reading cards for almost a decade. I began ritually using them for guidance after 3 years of solely studying the deep symbolism that the cards contain. I have been actively reading almost every day for the past 6 years. I resonate highly with the fortune teller aspect of culture. The cards bring a calming reassurance when times get a little vibrationally out of whack. I studied for years before I ever got my own deck to work with the Tarot, as a sign your first deck is supposed to be gifted to you. My Reiki healer gave me my first deck and it was a standard Raider-Waite deck. I now have just shy of 30 decks I have collected over the years, each with a different method of healing.
You’re also creating content in the form of podcasts! I am such a podcast nerd so I was very happy to find the Lifted Life, tell us a little bit about your podcast.
Lifted Life came to me as a way for me to get my thoughts out in a more fluid way than writing a 40-page blog post. I love bringing in the simple but powerful techniques in the metaphysical healing space, I also enjoy talking a lot. I have had numerous people tell me they could listen to me speak for hours. I wanted to bring something into the space that I didn't see before and that was a spiritual podcast dedicated to all the energies including the stuff people think is "out there". Plus I am not someone who lives completely outside of the real world, I love Bob's Burgers and Game of Thrones as much as the next person. During the season I would look ahead and try to find spoilers though, which I am a sucker for finding out what happens before I watch a show. I tried to make it as real as I am. Not just solely spiritual based because we live in a 3-dimensional plane, so we can't ignore the other factors. They are all here for a reason.
Each episode has a foundation of 3 parts: Metaphysics, Cannabis, and 3D Life. I am always talking about the frequency of our surroundings in everyday life and the planets pull on us anyway so I was like, "Hey, I listen to myself talk about this, I am going to start a podcast." It started to grow and pour out of me in a way that flows perfectly. I plan to have other Metaphysical women and men on in future episodes.
Do you find that cannabis helps you in your metaphysical side of your business? If so, how?
Cannabis has heightened my energetic work exponentially. I began consuming Cannabis and would give myself Reiki treatments, I noticed how much more aware of the energies I became.  Whenever I begin to give a client Reiki, I have them fill out a questionnaire as to how, when, or even if they consume. This gives me what I like to call their "cannaaura".  If they do not, I know I can bring CBD products for them to use during the session as well as after. If they do consume I have them take part in a "passing of the pipe" type of ceremony. We both consume and I guide our messages with the intention to be delivered down Blue Road. The White Buffalo Calf Woman brought the smoking pipe to the Lakota natives and told them this was a way to communicate their messages to their ancestors. Whenever I smoke Cannabis, it is always intention based and I want my clients to feel as if they can call in their ancestors at any time. Cannabis helps loosen some of the conditioned patterns of how we experience the energy, thus helping people be more open to receiving higher frequencies.
What are your plans going forward with The Stoned Housewife? What do you envision for your business?
I want to empower people to live a life that revolves around them keeping themselves on a frequency of love.  Our lives don't have to revolve around worrying about what others are doing, telling others how they need to be, or feeling helpless when something "out of our control" happens. We have all the control, it is just wrangling in the toddler energy level of our brains. Working with Reiki for the past 6 years has changed my life greatly. It is the path I chose and I have a divine inner feeling, I knew it all along. I want to empower people to take back their power, one way I have found works greatly in gathering people in a room and having them do their work. We so often give our power away in so many ways, from the very moment we wake up we are on our phones checking in on what the world has to say. I want to show people you don't have to give any power away and no one can take it.  Moving forward I want to bring these healing techniques to people all over the world. I feel confident in my abilities and the higher frequency energies I work with daily. I know I am guided solely to what is for my highest good. I envision my business continuing to grow on a global scale as I have books, magazines, and self-help programs in the works. I love collaborating and as for the rest of 2017, I have an event in Malibu, California coming up on Friday, October the 13th. I have teamed up with Cure Designs of the Emerald Exchange and two Holistic Health and Wellness coaches (@hintofgreens + @balanced_life_leslie) to bring together the goddess culture surrounding the number 13. It is a co-ed Sacred Space Sleepover on a private ranch, nestled in the hilltops.
I noticed you also strain reviews… What is your favorite strains and why?
Oh my! It is so hard to choose. My favorite would have to be Wonder Woman. It is an amazing producer and a mood game changer! It is my favorite because being an empath, I absorb tons of other people's energetic junk. WW helps clear out those energies and leaves an actual high feeling, like your levitating. It smells like a combo of jet fuel and fruity pebbles. The terpene profile has pretty high amounts of Humulene and Caryophyllene. Humulene is found in Hops, Sage, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Black pepper and oregano have high amounts of Caryophyllene and it has been used in Alcohol craving reductions. I may be a little partial to this strain because my husband met Linda Carter, the OG Wonder Woman and gave her some of this strain. So not only is she my favorite but the actual Wonder Woman has smoked the weed I grew! That's freaking amazing.
Do you have a cannabis ritual? Do you think rituals around consumption are important?
I use Cannabis ritually when I want to communicate with the energies most cannot see (going into a Reiki session or conversing with the Tarot). I consume with the intention to be an open vessel and receive the guidance I need for the healing needed at that exact moment. I think we are naturally drawn to ritual as an ancestral way of healing. It's as if it is in our blood to perform rituals. Most people don't think they are rituals but refer to their rituals as "schedules". So for me if I do something everyday, I look to see if some kind of consumption would be beneficial. I religiously take CBD though, I wake up most mornings and reach for my Grapefruit CBD vaporizer with organic terpenes to supplement my coffee intake. This just sets me up with a higher energetic footprint for the day.
Another thing you’re doing is events, what are the Green Lodge Events like?
The Green Lodge is like stepping into a vortex of healing. Time stops and we just go within. I had a vision to bring women together under the premise of using different modalities of healing. I gather a lot of information before each lodge and no one lodge is similar. Each lodge is based on a foundation of Earth Realm Medicine. So that entails not only Cannabis and Crystals, but an animal, Goddess, Spirit, and Moon energy. We have had a Shamanic drumming chanting session which left the goddesses in tears and have planted wildflowers under the Budding Trees Moon. One month we had our local Brazilian Samba instructor come and we danced for the waters and the Goddess Oshun. TGL is more centred in giving you the tools to walk out the door and shift your perspective with literal frequency control. Nikola Tesla style! Not to say it is not work, I make you work. I make you question the self-talk you repeat every day to yourself and others. If our eyes could see the natural energetic auras that emanate from everything, we would have more awareness of our thought-forms. The Green Lodge is simply a portal, like something from Burning Man. You come in leave your Ego at the door and there is a good possibility you'll get to see some Fire. The next Green Lodge is November 18th in Boulder, Colorado, we will be having a food, coat, and feminine supplies drive and the proceeds will be going to a local domestic violence shelter in Denver.
What about cannabis do you love?
I love how Cannabis raises people's vibration. It opens the heart chakra and some world-renowned psychic channelers say it is a literal "deprogrammer."  Energetically when someone consumes Cannabis it elevates them. I love explaining to people you don't have to get high to use Cannabis and that I could get them higher with an energy healing session most times. Getting lifted is an understatement. I love being somewhere and asking someone if they would like to share a joint or bowl with me because I can literally see the tension melt away that so many people carry. Cannabis has helped me develop my Reiki practice into a full-blown way of life. I have a confidence I knew was somewhere inside of me, and working with the Cannabis Spirit has definitely helped me feel more in my self.
What advice would you offer to a woman interested in joining the cannabis industry?
Do your own thing but don't be intimidated to ask for help. This isn't a lone wolf pack as much as we have been taught on societal standards. The pack survives. So I would reach out to people who align with the work You want to do, not the work someone else wants you to do to fulfill their dream. If you have confidence in your self, the right people and opportunities will align into your path. I have met some amazing people and I simply reached out with the intention to have a mutually beneficial relationship, whether that be business, sponsor, or simply just a friend. The Cannabis industry is the tadpole of the world right now. It is just a little baby! So nurture it and yourself and we can grow this into something that benefits humanity as a whole for the better.

 Thoughts on War Day
Quarters 5 through 7 were our big comeback quarters.  We learned that our level of aggressiveness was nowhere near the level of Catronix. This allowed them to gain an early lead, but they seemed legitimately surprised at our rapid comeback and capture of the market in quarters 5 and 6. In Quarter 7 we both started to realize that this could be a neck-and-neck race if we don’t find a way to differentiate from each other. We’ve been looking very closely at the design of their ads, volume of their ads, volume of their sales staff, and components used in their machines each quarter. I’ve identified that they may be over spending on their advertising and sales staff and bumping up against capacity problems, something we have yet to encounter since we invest in capacity and process improvements every quarter. I’ve also been reading up on global strategy and have noted that many MNCs use an advertising to sales ratio and an R&D to sales ratio. Ideally, we want to see those percentages drop while revenues increase. This would indicate to us that our marketing and product design is becoming more targeted and that ROI is increasing. Going forward, we want to limit our licensing of R&D to Catronix, but work out a way to reach a manufacturing agreement with them. I am very hesitant about this though due to inventory costs and losing market share. This deal would have to involve some very specific language about which machines we are willing to make for them in NORAM and EU. We both have high margins on traveler, but perhaps we could agree that one team focuses on traveler and the other on Mercedes. We also had our target inventory and replenishments set WAY too high in q7, which severely hurt our cashflows in Q8. Now we have to dump something like 2,000 machines that we are re-designing. We are monitoring that very closely going forward. I’ve complained enough that Kelly and Sabah are well aware that I will throw a temper tantrum if we have over $2M in inventory sitting on the shelf again! Especially with all of these expensive new parts we need to put in our new machines. As any good operations manager would…although operations isn’t supposed to be what I’m in charge of here…that’s Sabah’s jurisdiction. J
Thoughts on the VC Presentation and Team Dynamic
First, let me say that I know you just bought our company, Allan. J You have 54% of our shares, which gives you a controlling interest…but I have an endgame spin on this in mind! I also made an error during the presentation when I said that I wanted to see the ad to sales ratio increase. That percentage should trend down if we are doing a good job.
The last week has been extremely stressful and there were some fireworks within the team. I had some resistance from Kelly about the amount of out of class time required to complete the presentation and 3 quarters that were due. I had to remind her that accommodating her work schedule led to the pile up of work for this class this week and that no individual in the group’s time is more or less valuable than another’s. We’ve also had some disagreement about the level of risk to take on in Q8 and how to set our replenishment points. Kelly is committed to high risk decisions, but doesn’t look at the financial impact until I point out some very specific cashflow impacts. This is also why I made the P&L forecast to reign it in if need be. Often, my opinion is dismissed – none to diplomatically - which irritates me, but eventually we reach a middle ground. I’m getting the sense that certain people haven’t heard the word “N.O.” too much. Fortunately, I don’t cave into bullying and I’m glad to dig in my heels until a compromise is reached. I recognize that this is a symptom of different leadership styles, negotiation styles, creative styles, and risk aversion. The great thing though is that Kelly pushes me out of my comfort zone and I also push her out of her comfort zone. The dynamic works! We both know that we do much better when we collaborate…even if we do want to strangle each other on occasion! Sabah has some very anticipated comprehension setbacks; however, this also helps the team dynamic because Sabah forces us to explain our decisions to her. This works as a QA measure too because we might realize some errors we’ve made when we explain things to her that we didn’t see before. We have had occasional problems with getting her to commit to group meetings and then changing things in the simulator without our knowledge. This has been addressed.  Although we are all feeling frustrated and very burnt out, I think we came together nicely to deliver a great presentation. Even if we go bankrupt or don’t win this thing, I am taking a lot away from the whole experience, which is more valuable than winning or losing.
Obviously, there are some aspects of the simulation that aren’t quite how things would play out in the real world. For instance, we’re on all contents in 2 FYs. Highly unlikely. We invest in millions of dollars in R&D each quarter, also highly unlikely in the early stages of opening a business. We have one competitor. Nope. We have huge venture capital investments. Again, nope. We are constantly tweaking our operating capacity and cashflows, this would require a ton of labor hours, an army of managers/consultants, and analysts in the real world. Yet, oddly, we have no current liabilities that are AR or AP related on our Balance Sheet… However, the experience is close enough to reality to provide an extremely valuable learning experience. You just have to suspend disbelief sometimes.
What a great way to wrap up the program! This capstone class may be one of the best classes I’ve taken in that it forces me to apply all of the knowledge I’ve gained throughout the program. I’ve also enjoyed our Accounting, Financial Management, and Public Policy classes. All of these classes have a few things in common: they make me uncomfortable, they push me just a bit past my breaking point, and the professors don’t give an inch. This class proves to me that I did learn from this, which is more important to me than the three letters that will soon be on my resume after my name. I want to wow my future employer, not just be competent.

I haven’t been here in awhile so let’s catch up, even though I highly doubt anyone is reading this unless it’s someone who’s going to troll me and send me a ridiculous anonymous message about how my makeup is crap or that I still don’t look good, I mean at least someone is looking at my page right? For about two years now I’ve been living a healthier style, I say healthier because I know I’m not perfect, I do indulge in pizza and ice-cream every once in awhile, but now I know how important it is to research everything you put in your body, how important it is to keep your body hydrated and, especially if you’re a fitness freak like I am, how important it is to keep your body nourished by eating the right amount of whole grains, protein, and vitamins. I’m happy to say that I’m very happy with the results just living a healthier lifestyle has given me.
With these results, I have noticed that I am more confident, I am more self-aware and I am more willing to step out of my comfort zone. Five years ago, which now seems like forever ago, I started working at Hooters, before this job came along I never thought I would become a hooter girl, but as I started working there and notice how easy it was for me to save money and pay for school with my flexible schedule I became very, very comfortable during this time is when I gained some weight, maybe it was college that got to me, all the drinking, unhealthy habits and late night trips to Taco Bell during this time I didn’t think much of the weight I gained because it wasn’t that noticeable, but when I look back now, it’s not the weight I should have been concerned about it should have been how unhealthy I was, but everyone learns from their mistakes, during these times I remember girls that I worked with would compete in these bikini contests that Hooters have every year, and every single time I saw the sign up sheet I just thought to myself “wow, I could never do that” I immediately said to myself that I was going to fail without even trying, as the years went by and I started to care more about my body and become more interested in working out and nutrition, my body started to show it so last year when the bikini contest announcement came out I decided to go for it, and I trained, I trained hard and I never once cheated on my diet, same goes for the calendar try-outs last year was the first year I decided to give it my all, I wanted to be recognized, but of course nothing ever comes that easy, I didn’t place in the bikini contest, and I didn’t make it in the calendar, and I was very hard on myself about it, every day I would question to myself “what did I do wrong?” “what is wrong with me?” but then when I look at it now, I think to myself, I did nothing wrong, it just wasn’t the right time.  I thought about it so much that this year I was overwhelmingly discouraged to try out for the 2018 calendar and to do any bikini contests, I’m happy to say that this year I’ve already competed in two bikini contests and I will be competing in my fourth bikini contest this Saturday, in Sarasota, and still even though I haven’t won yet I know my time will come, but I’m grateful for the opportunities that the company I work for gives me, and also a big milestone for me is that I did get selected to shoot for the 2018 calendar, when I received that letter all I could think of was “you did this because you never gave up” and I’m very proud of myself because of that.
Now, I want to talk about this “experiment” so, I know a lot of people have mixed reviews on diet cleanses, some say there extremely unhealthy because we need food to survive, and some say it’s good to clean out your body of toxins, and I still don’t know what side I’m on, this topic, but, this week has been really hectic for me because I got my wisdom tooth pulled out, I haven’t been able to eat the normal things I eat on my diet right before a contest, and I’ve also been resting a lot so I’ve only been to the gym twice (weird for me) so I decided to try the blueprint cleanse, for one, I can’t really eat anything solid anyway, and two I want to see if it actually does anything, I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback about the product, one being from one of my co-workers that said she lost seven pounds being on it, but I’m sure it effects everyone differently, anyway, I’ll write a follow-up article about my experience.
