I started this a long ass time ago, but its finally finished now!

The Lords of Hell must assume mortal guises to infiltrate Sanctuary, why? To eat good food, drink wine, and be annoying of course! (This is a part of a Post!D4 AU of mine, which i will not explain right now it’d take too long)

So I don't like to define my Rook's relationship with Viago just as brotherly or parental. I think there's an element of connection there that is normally reserved for family, that there's loyalty and shared experience, but that just calling Viago Rook's older brother or parent would be over simplifying it.

That said!

As much as I love the unpacking scene, I do not believe for a second that this thing fit in my Rook's pack while she was on the run with Varric.

So instead, I'm having fun imagining that when she was exiled from Treviso, it was a "fled immediately in the dead of night" type of situation to keep a Crow from a rival house from killing her. She left what few sentimental items she couldn't carry on her person in her apartment, fully expecting not to see them again.

Only to come to Treviso with Lucanis to check in and then be cornered by Viago.He promptly pulls her into his office and hands this thing off to her in the same way exasperated parents hand off the grade school projects and childhood drawings/old toys they've been storing in a box on a shelf somewhere when they finally get tired of holding on to their adult kid's stuff.

Rook isn't sure whether she's touched or supremely weirded out.

He walked straight into the lions den and now he's paying for it. Walked in under prepared, and so caught up in his own plans that he neglected to account for how dangerous a place it would truly be. He should of listened to Arcade. He should of avoided all contact with the legion. Yet here he stands in the tent of Caesar staring down the man who once shot him in the head. Ordered to choose this mans fate. Disparaged for a lack of blood lust when he'd proposed freeing him.

The concealed 22. in his coat feels like it's weighing him down. The 'machete' that's more lawnmower blade that's in his hand- ill-fitting for a physician. He's running through his options. He doesn't want to kill Benny, but... two attack dogs. Five praetorians. Caesar himself. Two other high ranking legion officers... Another guard, another dog, both waiting outside with his friend and robot.

He feels ill. He's overheating. The ground is uneven. Every imperfection of the wrappings around the machete dig into his hand. There is no winning a fight here.

'Close your eyes if you want to.' 'Make it clean.' 'I shall.'

Despite his best efforts - It takes 16 strikes.

16 strikes. Followers coat now drenched in blood. He looks back to Caesar and wonders whether he looks as bloodthirsty as he was asked to be, or simply as terrified as he feels.

Julian Resso used to have a guitar.

He was playing it when his father broke it, a song he'd just started learning, but had the rhythm down. Storming in and snapping the neck of it, saying nothing to his objections, but telling him he would never amount to anything nevertheless. Didn't you want to be a scientist? Then what's with the damn guitar. You're not cut out for either.

He never fixed it, couldn't bear it.

Hasn't played since.

Years have passed since then. He's proved the old man wrong, in every line, every chemical formula. And.. in other ways, too.

He has a new guitar, shiny and fresh. The most thoughtful thing anyone's done; there have been a lot of those. New chance, new start. Never thought he'd pick up another one, but here he is, through no choice of his own. Nosy bastard. But the lines of the frets remind him- guitars can only differ so much- and he has old, unfinished business.

And, when he has a quiet moment to himself, after the confusion and the thank you, after wondering how in the hell the other had put the pieces together and found out, he picks her up and begins to play.

It's been years, but he's pretty sure this is the note he left off on; he wouldn't forget.
