She is the honouree of 2023's Nova Scotia Heritage Day. Rita Joe is a household name among the Mi'kmaq as a poet laureate, her most famous work being "I Lost My Talk", about the struggle of having her language stolen in residential school. Maybe you've heard it before, or maybe this is your first prompt to look it up. I strongly suggest expanding your interest to her other works as well; she has a huge poetry collection of beautifully crafted words.

Since it's heritage day tomorrow we had a little something something today on campus.

One of the main things was traditional attire. So as a Zulu person I had to represent.

Slight issue tho. I really wanted to wear something masc but I panicked and just went girl mode. It's safer.

But when I got there and the other mascs were wearing traditional men's attire I felt both relieved and aggravated. I could've done it too. If I had thought about it longer and planned better or even just asked them what they were gonna do outfit wise I could have spent the day comfortable and good. But there's always next year, I guess.

I'll get umbhlaselo next time I get my hands on some cash. Something that would look good with black jeans or even just a leopard print T would do good. I'm still getting in the habit of presenting how I want instead of how I think other people expect me to. If it's too stressful to leave the house and walk to the taxi rank in men's attire I could just leave in plain clothes and change when I get to campus. Okay it's actually annoying me now thinking about how much cheaper AND better a masc fit would've looked compared to what I actually had on. Some fur sandals, black jeans, a leopard T and head gear. It would've been so great. I'm gonna be chewing on furniture about this for next 365 days 🧍🏾‍♂️
