This song has a new light after Say don’t go, she wanted him to say I love you and he didn’t, she’s searching for signs in silence

The 1989 Liner notes make a poem that tells the story of one single couple, which we all know is Harry Styles and Taylor. In September/October 2014 Taylor did a lot of 1989 media while heart broken minimising the relationship.

Taylor has said 'You are in Love' is about Jack and Lena. Neither Jack, who worked on the song or Lena knew that before this. Where, arms crossed, Taylors talks about crying and said the relationship she wrote 1989 (and it's 81 uses of the word 'love') about was infatuation. After Say Don’t Go, makes sense, she was hanging out for an I love you that seemed to come after the album.

In an Elle Interview she said she had been in love but was disappointed and that happily ever after wasn't real, but would be beautiful and mundane. She said the lyrics were things Lena had told her. (OK, weird chats between Lena and Taylor about burnt toast and the chains Jack doesn't wear.) In her Rolling Stone interview in the same time she sounded sad, RS said jaded:

In summary, like writing Clean in London closing the book (but leaving out that Style was written 2 weeks later) there is some self-preservation in discussing inspiration. It's Taylor's art, sharing vulnerability and her choice how it's presented.

I think this narrative also worked against them in long run, HS wrote Fools Gold about his hurt about it at the time. A lot of fans view that the relationship was less significant to them than their later (very recent) work indicates.

Playing live

You are In Love only made it on the setlist for 28 shows on the 1989 World Tour (at 54 Mins) and not at all on the Rep Tour. It was played at the 4 August 2023 Eras show.

When was it written / Working with Jack

In October 2014 Jack said to the Hollywood Reporter that it was the fourth song they wrote together. Jack's quote calls it "you were in love" I wonder if it was an error or the song was retrospective at one point. We haven't seen original lyrics for it. Jack said they were 5,000 miles apart when they wrote Out of the Woods and referred to a cancelled show in September 15, Taylor was in Cape Town, Australia and NZ in October - November so it was likely then, with YAIL after. Sweeter than Fiction was first mentioned 30 August and released October 2013. So we know it was written between September - November 2013. Taylor likely recorded the vocals in January 2014 when she was in LA. My guess is September 2013 after Harry and Taylor saw each other at the VMAs.

The open sounds like remembering a moment, rather than in it, playing it back. This and the line of "Meant just for you" reminds me song Harry wrote for One Direction If I could fly about wishing he was with TS and sharing his vulnerability only with her.

Another Style reference with Coffee at Midnight "Midnight/ You come and pick me up, no headlights”

'No proof, one touch' is one of my favorite lines, it captures wanting to keep a part of their time together just for them and also how strong their connection is.

The song is about the feeling that love is something you feel rather than being told. It is silent, private and unseen. The open includes a reference to way home, home being an important concept of safety in HS and TS's songs.

The mundane aspects of life are romanticized, letting her guard and past worries go. There is a similar idea in New Years Day where cleaning up after a party and in Keep Driving where mundane mornings are romanticized as here. "Maple syrup, coffee / Pancakes for two /Hash brown, egg yolk /I will always love you"

Taylor said she had not experienced being her lovers best friend at that time, to me the best friend line sounds exactly like 18 year old HS.

Taylor has worn a few shirts of Harry's, like the one at the top in the 1989 polaroids and these two. Harry also referred to this in From the Dining Table "I see you gave him my old t-shirt / More of what was once mine" Harry also wrote on Olivia “she’s lying in bed with my tshirt on”

Harry also refers to a picture of Taylor in Sunflower Vol 6 "I've got your face hung up high in the gallery" it is not a literal gallery or office downtown, but a metaphor for showing everyone she is his person.

In Wonderland, Taylor also talks about loosing their minds "And in the end, in Wonderland, we both went mad". On Midnights a romantic struggle is called a war in The Great War. Here she is saying that the relationship was challenging, but the love made it worthwhile.

Taylor uses the imagery of dancing in a snow globe and fishbowl again in the Lover Video, which also references Harry. The imagery is that they are under the microscope, unable to escape being on display but being in that together here and in Lover is beautiful.

I feed myself pretty thoughts, so that pretty might take root in my stomach; I love my body. I wouldn't ban all that reflected. I wouldn't skin a skinny girl alive, pluck the nerves off her limbs one by one and step into her flesh, if only for a day, just so that I would know what it felt like. I don't look at the pictures in which I took up half of what I do now and want to carve into myself with a steak knife, cut off all the excess, bleed to death but bleed prettily, delicately, like a bunny, not a cow. Book Review: The Wild Ones by Nafiza Azad (🇫🇯 Fiji + others)

The Wild Ones

YA World Challenge read for 🇫🇯 Fiji

While the author was born in Fiji and is a "self-identified island girl" according to her bio, only a couple chapters of this book took place in Fiji (plus one Fijian character). I didn't know that before reading, but that's okay and enough to count as my book for Fiji. 😘

Review

This was a uniquely written book and I liked it for that. The premise is a sort of magical-girl squad of sexual violence survivors. They are Paheli's "Wild Ones" - she has saved them all in some way and given them magic stars which instill powers. They are able to traverse the Between, a sort of magical hallway between cities, which is usually only accessible to non-humans. When Paheli is reunited with Taarana, the boy who first saved her and gave her the stars, the Wild Ones decide to protect him from the baddies hunting him down.

The book alternates between two points of view - one is Paheli's, and the other is a collective "we" voice of the other Wild Ones. The voice will also sometimes address the reader directly with comments on gender violence and society. This might seem heavy-handed to some readers, or cathartic to others, depending on the person. I found it refreshing to read a different style.

My favorite parts of the book:

The cities! The Between takes us to multiple cities, each one described as a character in itself, so that we are immersed in such diverse places as Marrakech, Morocco and Busan, South Korea.

I wasn't expecting to find such a cute romance. Seriously, they were so cute.

The diversity of the girls. From Africa to Iraq to the Pacific, the Wild Ones come from across the globe (and the LGBT spectrum). I also love that the author did not only choose Western-palatable names, and chose to show that the Widads and Gufrans of the world are just as beautiful (they are!)

I did want to know more about the character's backstories - each has her own poem, though cryptic - but at the same time I felt the message was "our trauma is not your entertainment" in leaving their stories intentionally vague. So, respect to that.

This was a unique book with a fun feminist theme that tackled themes of trauma and violence at the same time. Keep this in mind for the content warnings (there is also on-page suicide), but if you're okay with that this was worth the read.

Everything I read in November

A weird month just generally because I was filled with rage at (insert literally any international incident here) and between angrily sending Dick Durbin emails telling him to get his shit together (all my federal reps very early on called for a ceasefire in Palestine but they're still on notice and will be forever tbh) I started and stopped about 50 books. This is what I finished

The good:

Gwen and Art are Not In Love by Lex Croucher: putting in "good" despite some iffy/not well developed political intrigue because the dynamics and dialogue was just so damn fun. The spiritual successor to "A Knight's Tale" imo.

Intimations by Zadie Smith: would've been "okay" for me if "Postscript: Contempt as a Virus" wasn't so good. "Herd immunity as immunity from the herd" had me on the fuckin floor, I had never thought of it like that.

The Wreckage of My Presence by Casey Wilson: I found this to be both funny and vulnerable in a really impressive way. You know how in Tina Fey's book it's like "bleh I was an ugly nerd! I'm a loser" and that's how she mentions her faults? Casey Wilson is like "I have extreme anger issues and also addiction problems and am maybe legitimately obsessed with my husband and I am working on all of those things" but in a sometimes funny way? Idk. One of the better comedian books IMO.

A Wizard of Earthsea by Urusula K LeGuin: listened on audio, docking a couple points bc there were too many mouth sounds from the narrator. LeGuin is so smart and makes me feel like I truly understand about 50% of her like...Themes. Anyway this is a great story and I'm excited to keep reading

The great:

Recitatif by Toni Morrison: we all knew this was going to be great, it's Toni Morrison.

Unfortunately, It was Paradise by Mahmoud Darwish: he weaves so much history into like every single poem - constant religious references but also references to Gilgamesh and ancient Egypt. I need to go back and look at "Mural" for a while - it's about 45 pages long and beautiful, and I am certain most of it went over my head on the first read

debut: cold as you, tim mcgraw and shouldve said no. i think all 3 of them are incredible songs. cold as you for me in top 5 in her discography overall because its so relatable, painfully cynical it's healing. a masterpiece.

fearless: fearless, you're not sorry and forever and always as of now, i think my fearless top 3 variates but there isn't a best song to sing in the car to than fearless. fearless is a state of mind tbh, an iconic song.

speak now: sparks fly, last kiss, haunted. idk man, those songs aren't songs they are feelings. especially sparks fly, i love this song with my whole heart definitely top 5 in taylor's discography as well.

red: treacherous, ikywt, all too well/red. it's hard to narrow down my favorite songs off of my favorite album, a top 5 would be easier. but one thing i know is that treacherous is the most beautiful, breathtaking song i've ever listened to. the after chorus production deserves a grammy itself. also ikywt is a 10/10 pop song which introduced me to taylor and it doesnt get the respect it deserves! red is just more of an emotion rather than a song as well, it gave its name to the record, it resperents a blessed era, i love it with all my heart

1989: wonderland, i know places, style. the whole album is just a masterpiece but wonderland is just beyond that. song that sweeps me off my feet in every sense, it's amazing. painfully underrated, i was shocked she remembered it at the eras tour tbh.

rep: dont blame me, i did something bad, delicate. dont blame me song of all time. she had probably met jesus before writing it bc i dont know where she found this inspiration to create such a masterpiece.

lover: false god, cruel summer, afterglow. false god is just that good!!!! the saxophone is the end of me, everything about this song is just so good! up there with the best on her discography for sure.

folklore: exile, seven, illicit affairs. its hard for me to rank folklore too but exile is insanely good. the lyrics??? hello??? you were my town now im on exile seeing you out? 10/10 im a bitch for that song

evermore: tis the damn season, cowboy like me, right where you left me. life changing songs. just that. i cant say anything else, they all altered my brain chemistry. evermore is her best storytelling work and those songs are not just songs they are books, movies, music videos, poems all at the same time.

midnights: maroon, the great war, high infidelity. midnights is a great album ok. maroon is the album's queen and then there are some songs that exist to remind you how good of an album midnights is.

if you found this post interesting, i would love to be the first person to introduce you to the thrilling adventures of lovelace and babbage !! it's a graphic novel based off of ada lovelace with a steampunk bend and most of it is quite fictional BUTTT there are real events and correspondences thrown in and it is so utterly fascinating to read those footnotes.

also the art style is BEAUTIFUL!!! look at this fantastic woman.

lord byron plays a not insignificant role as well <3 and there is a beautiful thought here about how computer programming was just another form of poetry and however much her mother pushed her towards math, it just led her to combine both parts of her heritage. she spoke poems of numbers. etc!!!! as a computer scientist who is also a poet and vice versa, this book genuinely changed my entire perspective on my life and got me interested in computers in the first place.

also if you are a luddite you've got some great rep in here as well <3 it's got something for everyone!!

Ok so I’m lowkey spiraling because I feel like so many of the songs i interpreted to be about Joe or a ton of the folklore/evermore songs (ttds, cowboy like me, cardigan, august, the love triangle, etc) people are saying to actually be about matty. Even rep and lover songs?? Like idk I just struggle to believe she was so in love with Joe but fantasizing/emotionally cheating on him w matty the whole time? But then in fresh out the slammer she says “all those nights you kept me going/swirled you into all of my poems” which very much seems to be her communicating to him through her music (songwriting = poetry). AND I’ve discovered the countless amount of lyrical parallels made between the last ten years of Taylor and the 1975’s music…so idk. I’m just so confused. Maybe I’m taking it personal because I love Taylor’s Joe songs and loved their relationship at one point always believed that it was a beautiful love but now it seems like my life is a lie?? Idk lmao

I think a lot of those things can be true dude. She wrote a ton of beautiful things for Joe. She also wrote fictional things lol (inspired by feelings for sure but fictional!!!) and TDDS is kinda weird fanfic about her and the non child abusing Drew, not about Matty lol. Don’t spiral. Joe and Taylor were very cute but they had a lot of problems (which we heard about from REP onwards) and then Matty came back into the picture and managed to convince her it’s the real deal this time, which I think he also believed when he said it, like?? That’s what happened lol. We don’t need to retcon songs for Matty. She loved both guys, in different ways. That’s genuinely okay. It’s not like a grand love story for a character but she’s not a character. She’s a real life person and highkey messy as shit.

How both Wille and Simon were trying to recreate certain memories with other people (Simon asking Marcus to put on a Horror film before kissing him, just like S1 x Wille asking Felice to hold him and then kissing her, just like S2)

BORIS ! What. A. Legend. I love how he was the character who pretty much did THE LEAST this season and yet he also did THE MOST to influence this season. My guy was sat sipping his little tea, with his cute little glasses atop his head, just adding a little philosophical touch every now again and watching it unfold. He really said ‘I’m abstaining from this chaos, but am I refuting that I had a hand in it? Absolutely not.” AND I RESPECT HIM FOR THAT.

Queer rep is not a vacuum

There is so much debate over what is and is not queer rep and it seems to change with each new show. For this I’m going to explore four series that I’m personally a fan of and break down their rep individually ;LOK, SPOP, TOH and Arcane. I will do it this way because Queer rep is not a vacuum.

It is first important to understand the perspective I’m coming at from this: so Yaama, if you don’t know me I’m a queer [Enby and Demi sexual lesbian]and indigenous [Australian] writer; I mainly write about queer people for queer people. I also want to say that I am not bashing any of these series, I love them all.

1. Korrasami

Korra and Asami have a slightly rocky relationship when they first meet but they become fast friends. Both characters are confirmed Bisexual and their relationship is far more obvious from a  queer perspective. They are far less explicit than other shows on this list but that is due to studio censorship.

The ship itself is really sweet. Both women are close and support each other with Korra writing to only Asami at one of the roughest times of her life.

This ship, being the first queer rep in Avatar, followed by Kya being confirmed as a lesbian, gets a lot of flack for being too subtle and not built up enough. As much as I do not like Some writers on the Avatar team, I do genuinely believe they were trying their best here.

The ship itself isn’t problematic and came at a time when there was little rep in mainstream media, let alone kids media. While it has it’s issues, it is some of the first rep kids in my generation saw. Sue me, I’ve got nostalgia.

2.SPOP

This is a contentious one but it cannot be denied that SPOP was full of Queer rep. Spinetossa, catradora, None of the princesses were straight and Double Trouble.

SPOP is unashamed of it’s queer rep and as world where no one is straight, no one is homophobic. This provides escapism that we as queer people sometimes need.

While Catradora has it’s criticisms, it’s a beautiful ship that underpins the narrative  and drives the plot. to call it “toxic” or “abusive” ignores the nuance of the story.

Spinetossa is a solid relationship that provides fluff and comedic relief in the darker episodes. they’re background characters but the nature of their relationship is clear from the start. they’re always together, they wear chokers with each other's colours . From the get go, before we even hear the cute nicknames we know they are a unit. 

Double Trouble , while  stemming from a problematic trope, is a solid character with complexities and comedy gold to spare. While the trope of making nonbinary characters non human is dodgy at best in a show where cis characters are also not human they don’t stand out too much so they can have a pass.

3. TOH

TOH is also unashamedly queer, Eda, Raine, Willow’s dads, Lumity, Edric.I’ve also seen commendations on the Neurodivergent rep  but that’s not my place.

Disney was obviously trying to censor things earlier on but around late season two A Dana stopped giving a shit and good for her. We got Edric having a partner, to quote his sister Emira “ After he accidentally sent  a love poem to THEIR mum”. Love that for him. The first Lumity kiss and them getting together and everything after it.

Willows dads’, minor and cliched as they may be do not come of a tokenistic, a nice change from other shows there the Mc’s best friend’s queer parents is often some of the only rep.

And Raine, a nonbinary person, who while not quite human isn’t an alien/robot/demon/spirit. They’re also a prominent character and their relationship with Eda is just a delight.

Cool Aunt Lilith, AroAce queen and all the flags in season three and it’s only the first episode.

there are some issues with Luz dating her friends ex bully but they address it and smooth it over.

4.Arcane

The biggest thing to come out of Arcane was CatVi/Violyn. I’ve seen some people ship Caitlyn and Jayce but that’s a small group.

Both character’s are confirmed as lesbians.While I love Luz I do find that lesbians do often get left behind in representation or claimed as Bi when they aren’t.

there’s not much else in terms of queer rep for Arcane but it’s very clearly a world where homophobia isn’t an issue.

The CatVi relationship is also important to the story and builds up over the first season. the show isn’t concerned with it but it’s nice to see.

All this to say, Queer rep isn’t a vacum, just because one series shows wholesome queer people and another shows messy,complicated queer love does not make either superior to the other. To put wholesome queer relationships over messy ones perpetuates respectability politics. Both can be good queer rep, both can be bad queer rep.

And once again, Sue Gilbert would be proud of Miss Ella Hunt because she literally gave her name. In every second of screen, in every line, in every moment. And we all are! Thanks Ella you are the best and Sue is a gift! Such an inspiration like you! My mind is exploding in the best way possible this season!😍

2020 HIGHLIGHTS ✨

rules: list your top 10 shows (bl or not) you watched in 2020 (doesn’t necessarily have to be shows that came out in 2020 though!)

1. 2GETHER & STILL2GETHER

my first thai drama, and even after all the amazing shows i’ve watched this year, it still has a special place in my heart. watching 2gether was the first time i’d ever seen a queer romcom that just... was. for me, by the simple fact of its being, 2gether was revolutionary. and then still2gether came along and took all the best things about the first season and gave us something beautiful and quiet and lovely and just proved to me, once and for all, that queer happiness doesn’t need to justify its own existence. there can be gay cuddles on the beach for no other reason than that we want them. 

2. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

i don’t really have the words for this one but. it makes my heart so very soft.

3. FRIEND ZONE 2: DANGEROUS AREA

season one was mindless fun because everyone was an absolute trashfire and it was hella cathartic to watch, but season 2... wow. i love it for so many reasons: it has messy and authentic queer rep; the characterisation is excellent and i somehow care about all of the characters; amazing women taking centre stage(!); a wlw relationship with lesbian, ace and bipolar rep; multiple interesting plotlines; actual character development; arm weerayut as a chaos gremlin... absolutely one of my favourites of 2020.

4. CHERRY MAGIC

i don’t think i need to explain this one, which is fortunate, because i have no idea how exactly i’d describe the happy-warm-fuzzy-queer-seen-loving-affirmed-profound feeling that rises in my chest whenever i think about it. 

5. THE GIFTED: GRADUATION

confession: i liked season 2 more than season 1 (with the exception of the ending, which we don’t talk about). season 1 was enjoyable and interesting, but for me it was season 2 which made me love this series. it did some incredibly interesting and complicated things (even if it didn’t quite nail the landing): it pushed characters to the breaking point and wove so many layers into the story and questioned its own underlying themes. plus, watching it alongside everyone in the fandom made it 200% better. i love all of you and i love this show. egg girl 5eva.

6. THE SHIPPER

i 100% understand why so many people didn’t like this show, or found it problematic, but through some fluke it absolutely worked for me (even the ending). one day i will write an essay explaining my rationale, but for now i’ll just say that it’s one of my favourite shows about adolescence and queerness and identity and compassion and friendship and love that i’ve ever watched. 

7. YYY

this series is absolutely off its rocker, and it somehow managed to be one of the most affirming shows i’ve watched. it shouldn’t have worked by it did, and i love it so much.

8. 3 WILL BE FREE

absolutely iconic. amazing plot, stunning visuals, great characters, canon polyamory, jennie being incredible... what a series.

9. MANNER OF DEATH

i love the fact that this show exists; i love the mix of crime and romance; i love maxtul’s acting; i love the central relationship; i love bun. i know we’re not even halfway through yet, but this show is doing something special and i’m so grateful that i get to watch it unfold in real time. 

10. CHIHAYAFURU (SEASON 3)

odd one out on my list, but I had to include it. chihayafuru is my all-time favourite anime and it finally got a third season, which is somehow even better than the first two. mashima taichi is one of my favourite characters of all time and his storyline hits me on such a profound level. plus, in the years since i first say this show i’ve fallen in love with classical japanese literature (particularly heian poetry) so i had newfound appreciation for the karuta matches (aka i cried every time someone recited one of my favourite poems)

other favourites: together with me, he’s coming to me, sotus and sotus s, my dear loser: edge of 17, why r u, theory of love, wake up chanee!, gameboys, pearl next door, uta koi (anime), three kingdoms (2010), blood and water (netflix). (itsay would almost certainly be on my list if i’d had time to watch it. same with dark blue kiss, which i had to pause so i could do my assignments)

Final Thoughts

well, it’s been... a year (i don’t think anyone needs a reminder of the details) but writing this post has reminded me of all the amazing shows and people I discovered over the course of it.
