On Maddie Nolen... (Arcane S2 Act 2 Spoilers)

Spoilers for Arcane Season 2 Act 2

So Maddie Nolen. Definitely not a character who went in the direction I expected.

Also probably owe her a bit of an apology.

I admit, between Act 1 and Act 2 I was leaning towards the theory of Maddie going to be a toxic influence on Caitlyn and represent the naivety of evil; and generally become an authoritarian cheerleader for Caitlyn's worst impulses.

But come Act 2 and well...

So Maddie and Caitlyn got together (not too surprising for me tbh because I got spoiled by people who had seen the leaks imply this relationship would happen). However what was surprising was that Maddie was actually a voice of reason and even positive influence.

So, my apologies to Maddie Nolen; did not know she was this chill.

In general Caitlyn was much more composed than I was expecting for someone who almost endangered a child last we saw her. I suppose that jumping straight back into Enforcer work so soon after her mother's death was the main problem at play, and so months later she's had more time to grieve and calm down.

Also apparently people are upset at Maddie for this? Honestly, as far as we know, I don't think she's done anything wrong.

The relationship is obviously a rebound, but Caitlyn is presumably older (as Maddie is a junior officer) and Maddie's superior officer. So the eye-raising parts of the relationship are more on Caitlyn's end. If anything, this is kinda unfair to Maddie to be a rebound since she seemed genuinely invested in the relationship.

But yeah, was not expecting Maddie to be encouraging Caitlyn to be less authoritarian, and from what we've seen I wouldn't be surprised if Maddie's influence is what has caused Caitlyn to temper since Act 1.

Still am rooting for Catvi but the fact that Maddie seems to be trying her best to be a good girlfriend is going to make things kinda awkward. Hopefully it can all end maturely and civilly and Maddie can find herself a new girlfriend who she's not a rebound to. Also Caitlyn still needs to apology to Vi, but helping save Vander was a good start.

(Then again maybe I'll be wrong again and it'll turn out she's a Black Rose spy or something. Hope not though, feel it'd be kinda cheap way to solve a love triangle by going "oh yeah, the romantic rival was a foreign spy the entire time!")

So when I watched Arcane back in 2022, this was before I started anime (Arcane was my segue into anime, actually) before I was interacting with any sort of fandom, before I knew I wanted to be a writer, before I had ever shipped any characters and before tragic gay ships became responsible for a huge chunk of my happiness. I kinds sensed the tension between Caitlyn and Vi, but I don’t think I shipped it.

But NOW??? OH BOY. Oh yeah, oh yeah, I ship it.

WE ACTUALLY GOT THE KISS, and I was so freaking happy, punching AIR, AHH. And then...well...you know. BUT, there is hope. There is hope indeed.
