you know, on thursday night i went out w a couple of friends to a “poetry slam” that ended up being cancelled. the place itself was still open and mostly empty so we just sat on the stage reading poetry, having a couple drinks, shooting the shit. that was probably the most fun we could’ve had though and it was a wonderful night. afterwards walked down the street to a sushi restaurant and then promenaded about town till we were all sobered up. it was a great bonding experience and i had wanted to introduce those two other friends and get them closer together so by the time i went home i was like <3333
but before that, i actually went w my first friend to his grandfather’s house. i was talking to him the night before about chinese poetry and i showed him my copies of xu zhimo’s complete works in traditional chinese and yu xuanji’s in simplified chinese. and he was like “yo my grandfather would love those” (he’s chinese-vietnamese and speaks both languages). and i was like “you wanna give them to him?” it was really no big deal because i bought those secondhand because they interested me, and i liked the idea of having them in my book collection. but obviously if they’re of more significance to someone who can fluently read them then, well, i want them to have them! they weren’t expensive either for the record; they were like five bucks. books are meant to be read. blah blah.
so on the way to the poetry place we stopped by and gave them to his grandfather and yeah. his grandfather and his aunts that live w him don’t really speak much english but that’s okay. they were very nice to me. they still asked me a few questions like “oh what is your name?” and “do you like chinese poetry?” that kinda thing. his grandfather was reading some of the poems to us in chinese, translating them into vietnamese for my friend (because he’s retained that better than his mandarin), so my friend could then translate them for me into english. it was a pleasant interaction. but then we ended up staying a little bit longer than we intended to because we thought we’d be late to the poetry slam (that didn’t happen, but we didn’t know that yet).
so my friend is saying goodbye to his family in vietnamese, and i’m just waving and saying “goodbye, thank you” because that’s all i can really say. obviously i don’t really know what specifically they’re saying w each other but i figure it’s pretty typical. until mid-sentence my friend leans over and whispers something to his grandfather in this sort of jokey-teasey tone of voice. i thought he was making fun of me so i playfully hit him on the shoulder and said “what did you just say?” and he didn’t repeat it till we got out of the house.
he said what he was telling his grandfather was “we have to go, we’re gonna go hang out...” and then he leaned over and whispered “and we’re probably gonna have some drinks” which he didn’t want his aunts to hear. lol. well. i did not allow him to be a liar that night. we did in fact have some drinks.

10 movies I watched in Chinese class
Tumblr media
This post is the unofficial sequel to 10 iconic Mandopop songs from Chinese class. No one asked for it, but I watched to chronicle what I could remember before more fades from my memory! I saw these movies in Chinese class in high school and college, and I had to do some sleuthing to find some names.
The synopses are from IMDb, revised by me. I put links to watch for free on YouTube when I was able to find one, but they might not work in your country.
1. 《和你在一起》 Together (2002) A violin prodigy and his father travel to Beijing, where the father seeks the means to his son's success while the son struggles to accept the path laid before him.
Watch on YouTube
2. 《谁的青春不迷茫》 Yesterday Once More (2016) Lin Tianjiao, the top student in her class, is struggling to cope under intense academic pressure. After she is nearly caught cheating on a test, she befriends Gao Xiang, a free-spirited slacker.
Watch on YouTube
3. 《活着》 To Live (1994) Based on the novel by Yu Hua, four generations of the once-wealthy Xu family experience the difficult changes of the Chinese Civil War, the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution.
Watch on YouTube
4. 《喜宴》 The Wedding Banquet (1993) To satisfy his parents, Gao Wai-Tung, a gay man in a fulfilling relationship with his partner Simon, marries his female tenant Wei-Wei. Things get out of hand when his parents come to visit.
5. 《饮食男女》 Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) A widowed chef lives with his three grown daughters, who each experience ups and downs in their lives and romantic relationships as they leave the family home.
Watch on YouTube
6. 《哑孩儿》 Dumb Child* (2016) After graduating from college, Fang Yan takes a job as a teacher in a rural area of China. There she meets a young girl named Yaya who doesn't attend school due to her hearing impairment.
Watch on YouTube
*Dumb as in mute. It's not a great English name...
7. 《重返20岁》 20 Once Again/Miss Granny (2015) A 70-year old woman living unhappily with her son's family is magically transformed into her 20-year-old self. She befriends her grandson and decides to fulfill the dreams of her youth.
Watch on YouTube
8. 《北京爱情故事》 Beijing Love Story (2014) Different generations look at love, romance, and commitment, all from a uniquely Beijing perspective. All 5 couples and stories are intertwined a la Love Actually.
9. 《蓝风筝》 The Blue Kite (1993) The lives of a Beijing family throughout the 1950s and 1960s, as they experience the impact of the Hundred Flowers Campaign, the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution.
Watch on YouTube
10. 《青春派》 Young Style (2013) Struggling with romantic woes after his plan to confess to his crush goes awry, Ju Ran fails the college entrance exam (gaokao) and is forced to repeat his last year of high school.

Fic Writer Q & A!
Tagged by @dragongirlg-fics UwU
How many wips do you have currently?
2 for Lianhua Lou, 3 for Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Lianhua Lou
strings played against his throat, my whumpfic in which FeiHua's escape from Jiao Liqiao goes wrong, and Di Feisheng marries her to ensure the wellbeing of Li Lianhua, who becomes her concubine. Just updated uwu
My unpublished modern AU where Di Feisheng is an MMA fighter cowboy, Li Lianhua is his chiropractor, and Fang Xiaobao is the new sheriff in one of those Chinese towns they built purely for tourism. In this case, it's an Old West theme. Here's a preview.
Mo Dao Zu Shi
My Mo Dao/Percy Jackson crossover where WangXian and friends romp through Camp Half-Blood!
My Wen Xu/Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji AU where Wei Wuxian is adopted by the Wens instead of Jiang Fengmian. I swear I subvert so many jianghu tropes, this could be its own original novel, but here we are lol.
My two-part where Jin Zixuan flees to Lotus Pier and manages to alert the Jiangs in time for the Wang Lingjiao's attack. It's mostly written from Yu Ziyuan's perspective, and it's been a delight.
More Q&A below the cut!
Which one are you finding the hardest to finish?
Definitely #1 under Mo Dao. It's a huge labor of love, but I'm thinking maybe I thought too big with the plot. It could have just been a fun teenage romp, but then it turned into a drama that handles much larger themes, and the trouble is in being able to tie up all the plotlines I suddenly have.
What does it usually look like when inspiration strikes for you?
Usually when I have two days in a row off of work, so my brain has had at least 24 hours to clear out and think about fun. I go into a pleasant fugue state, meaning I'm focused, but I can occasionally take a five-minute break to chatter about it with my frens or listen to a song. (I'm answering this post while I'm working on fic btw.)
Do you curate playlists for each fic or is your process different?
Oh nah lol. I sometimes line some chill songs or ballads up in the background or like a Buzzfeed Unsolved marathon for background noise, but sometimes it has the opposite effect where I can't focus at all. So sometimes I just write in complete silence.
Do you go balls to the wall and write as you go or are you more organized?
Balls to the waaaaaaall babeeeeeee. Aside from the ones that're born from me chattering with frens. Both my Lianhua Lou fics and #2 under MDZS are from very specific and thorough chats that I screenshotted for reference.
I tag @westiec @theleakypen @kingsandbastardz @tavina-writes @heyholmesletsgo @the-wintry-mizzenmast and whoever else wants to do this, how do I know this many people lol.

i've been forgetting to yap abt it, but i think there's smth crazy abt the dynamic between su jue and yu ran (as if you can't tell w my fervent shipping of them)
read more for length
the clear black and white visual designs between them but within that they have the shared colour of similar shades of purple, in a way showing that they balance and compliment each other. Yu Ran representing light and justice while Su Jue is his shadow, doing all the dirty deeds - but I like that the reason why they work together so well is because they have a bit of that light and darkness in the other
like there's something INSANE about yu ran over the fact that he KNEW that su jue could take on masculine disguises (and almost exclusively we've only rly seen her w the exception of being yu xu disguise herself as men) and KEPT HIS MOUTH SHUT when his co-workers were explaining that her one weakness is her inability to disguise as men.
he was willing to let a powerful political and his superior get murdered, resulting in another man becoming a scapegoat for her. Granted, he went through that moral length so she can get some kind of justice for the abuse she went through by li tiangang, as well as knowing that if she went through with her original plan she would have been framed as a scapegoat and it'd set back esper rights by MILES, but he also WANTED the talent she possesses. He has a very ruthless side, succinctly put by his go/chess analogy of making the necessary sacrifices.
the reason why he thought so highly of su jue despite her terrible reputation, it's because he could see she has good in her, he knows she's always had a desire to use her powers to stand up for the little guy, to toy and mock with people who abuse their power. She was the person that INSPIRED Yu Ran to start standing up for himself, and to start wanting to do that for other people, leading him to be a politician. That compassion hidden within su jue is what ultimately convinced her to take the high road and let revenge run its course without her interference, inadvertently saving her life.
In the same way su jue does a lot of dirty work and is a lot more ruthless in ways yu ran cannot be for the sake of his personal values or public image as a gentle and benevolent politician, Yu Ran ALSO did some shady shit in order to save her life, letting someone important get murdered and another man imprisoned for it just by keeping quiet about the truth of su jue and convincing her (with yu xu to help) to take the high road. It goes both ways, it's why they work.
also just some other things that come from my shipping brainrot:
su jue liking the colour ivory for its purity (i wonder who's the same colour.....................)
Tumblr media
also doing the gay mirrored single earring thing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yu ran's horns and su jue's tails almost opposite in the color wheel, and i know in some pieces, yu ran's horns are much greener too
Tumblr media
also the inherent symbolism and dynamic of the fox vs deer....predator vs prey animal.........
Tumblr media
anyway this is my yapping abt why im so obsessed with su jue/yu ran💖, if anyone's got context or a way i can watch the story events where yu ran's got his titties out and is tied up bc i stopped playing around there, much appreciated i need it for my fuel

Floating Youth (冰球少年 lit. trans: Ice Hockey Youths)
For Gab @randomingoftherandomness, who so kindly asked me to yap about them
Now, if you liked Hikaru no Go (2020 live action), this might be up your alley too.
Floating Youth is at its core, a slice of life drama about a group of teenagers/university students who dream of winning an Ice Hockey championship, and tells the story of their growth and relationships with one another as they work towards that goal.
(you can skip this part if you're here for the Tea 🍵)
Main Character 1: Shen Zhouzhou (portrayed by Zhu Zhengting)
Tumblr media
the textbook rich kid who is pressured by his father to Reach Greater Heights
is actually a softie under that cold and aloof personality
actually listened to Chen Che when he told him to gtfo (it's a Whole Thing)
deserves the world honestly
Main Character 2: Chen Che (portrayed by Bai Shu)
Tumblr media
was raised by his grandmother and loves her dearly
is the passionate, hot headed half to Shen Zhouzhou's (MC 2) rational and taciturn's other half
has a high EQ when it comes to everyone else but Shen Zhouzhou
Shen BingBing (portrayed by Xu Hao)
Tumblr media
Shen Zhouzhou's little sister
unofficial PR manager of the Ice Hockey team, occasionally livestreams, extroverted unbothered queen
cares for her brother a lot
The Tea:
So I likened Chen Che and Shen Zhouzhou to Shu Guang and Yu Liang mostly because Chen Che is also the more 'happy go lucky' character to SZZ's level headedness.
(Though they differ in the sense that they weren't childhood rivals but childhood best friends who were practically joined at the hip. Until university, where their family circumstances drive a wedge between them).
so over the course of the first few eps they break up argue at least 3 times
Tumblr media Tumblr media
honestly though they just have each others best interest at heart but as I mentioned above, Chen Che has EQ with everyone but SZZ (poor guy)
SZZ also goes Abroad to train (like Yu Liang) but its Worse in his case because he didn't willingly go and well. He wasn't welcomed there either.
He does eventually manage to come back though! But It Gets Worse because Chen Che thinks that SZZ will only be able to reach his full potential in Ice Hockey if he trains abroad rather than in their small town, so he tries pushing him away (it does not go well. my boy develops anxiety).
Tumblr media
"What do you mean the two of you are fine! You guys never communicate clearly, each one dawdling more than the other!"
and honestly everyone can see how they're hurting and messed up because of their communication issues. everyone but them im-
If my shitty sales pitch somehow convinced you to watch the drama, here are some links to watch it on YouTube:
There's the English Dub version, original Chinese version (no subs), and Indo subs version
The only painful thing about this drama is that there's no English subs for it 💔 it's truly putting my Chinese to the test

Apr 11, 2024 by Anna Xu
SEVENTEEN’s SUNNIE will return to acting!
On April 11, Chinese news sources reported that SUNNIE will be starring in the upcoming iQIYI series ‘A-LIST’ as Zhu Fen Mei, an aspiring singer who finds herself realizing she’ll do anything for a taste of fame, including sabotaging her competition.
Later the same day, a PLEDIS Entertainment employee confirmed the report by announcing, ‘SUNNIE will be starring in ‘A-List.’
The show will focus on the rivalry between Zhu Fen Mei and An Su Yin, a famous singer who stole Fen Mei’s chance of becoming famous. An Su Yin is reportedly played by famous Chinese actress Qin Dai Yu.
Sunnie began her acting career with “Train To Busan” in 2016 and appeared in Netflix kdrama’s “Squid Game” and “All of Us Are Dead” as side characters, making A-List her first lead role.
Stay tuned for updates!

Honestly love the Yu Xu, Yu Ran, Su Jue trio, like, the Swiftspace posts for Yu Xu are hilarious because every time she says anything, Su Jue comes in to tease her while Yu Ran is just like “You’re doing great, sweetie.” And in the story, whenever Yu Ran says anything, Yu Xu is there to judge him supportively. Yu Xu is constantly like “You deserve better” and Yu Ran is like “No, you deserve better” and Su Jue is in the background thinking “I think I deserve better, actually.” Yu Xu supports Yu Ran and so supports Su Jue because Yu Ran supports Su Jue, and Yu Ran also supports Yu Xu and I think he would give her his entire salary if he could (seriously, how many times has he mentioned giving her a raise at this point). Meanwhile, Su Jue supports them both in return because it’s funny to make fun of them
(Also, Yu Ran is basically the epitome of “I support women’s rights and women’s wrongs” he just keeps working with criminals he’s so funny)
I love these three, such a chaotic trio.

Rec: Just finished reading this, and it is a WIP that was last updated 2022, but My Goodness. It's a Modern AU that looks at (fem) WWX who, after getting dumped by LWJ, is married to Wen Xu. It's kind of arranged, but WWX is cool with it. Which is her doom, because Wen Xu is a terrifyingly cunning abuser. She's gaslighted and isolated but convinced she's the problem all these years. - Anon

Summary: Lan Zhan broke up with her on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in their favorite coffee shop. Wei Ying was still reeling from the impact when Madam Yu brought forward a marriage offer with someone she had never met before. She accepted. After all, marrying Lan Zhan was no longer an option. There was no way she would come to regret it.
