Happy birthday to the late great Henry Gibson! Henry passed away in 2009. He would’ve turned 85 today. Henry left a legacy of wonderful performances on the big screen (The Burbs, Innerspace) and the small one (Laugh-In). His subtly and comic timing were/are unmatched. As “Mr. Wormwood” in Innerspace, he works against Martin Short perfectly! Such a terrific/radiant/humble performer! He’s some actor! 😉 What’s your favorite HG movie/tv/role? ❤️📼❤️ • •• ••• #henrygibson #actor #birthday #comedian #vhs #vcr #videostore #podcast #80spodcast #laughin #comedy #nashville #innerspace #theburbs #70s #80s #90s #bluesbrothers #cultclassic #cult #funnyman #joedante https://www.instagram.com/p/CFZsLbClwMg/?igshid=ccqopks45bo

Aretha Franklin "Almighty Fire" 1978年1-3月Curtom Studios (Chicago, IL); ABC Recording Studios (Los Angeles, CA); Whitney Recording Studios (Glendale, CA). Lead Guitar - #CurtisMayfield Keyboards - #RichTufo Rhythm Guitar - #GaryThompson Bass Guitar - #JosephScott Drums - #DonnellHagan Congas - #HenryGibson Background Vocalists - #AlfonzoSurrett #DeneseHeard #MattieButler #RickiLinton #The Jones Girls String Contractor - #SolBobrov Horn Contractor - #LenardDruss Arranged By - #RichTufo Recording Engineers - #FBreitberg #RAnfinsen Remix Engineer - R.Anfinsen Album Cover Concept - Aretha Franklin Produced By - Curtis Mayfield Written-By - Aretha Franklin (tracks: B4), Curtis Mayfield (tracks: A1 to B3), #GlynnTurman (tracks: B4) #soulmusic #fuzey #soulsinger #queenofsoul #vinyl #vinylcollection #soulrecords #recordcollection #arethafranklintribute #gospel  #アレサフランクリン #ソウルミュージック #ゴスペル #レコード ※作品を知り、ジャズの素晴らしさを伝えたい。様々なソースをアレンジ、先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/CAPFfzKpc6f/?igshid=1dbs0rr0isfli

Favorites : The Long Goodbye (1973)
Tumblr media
Long lenses... long takes... long moments... long cons... these are just some of the elements that stand out in Robert Altman’s wonderful take on the  iconic Raymond Chandler novel The Long Goodbye.
Phillip Marlowe (Elliott Gould), a Los Angeles-based private eye, is surprised by his close friend Terry Lennox (Jim Bouton) in the middle of night, with a request for a ride to Tijuana.  Because he is a nice guy, Marlowe obliges, only to be arrested on his return with news that Lennox murdered his wife.  Marlowe refuses to cooperate, under the impression that his friend is being railroaded, and is jailed.  Upon his release 3 days later, the police inform him that Lennox has committed suicide.  In the midst of trying to piece this information together, Marlowe is hired by Eileen Wade (Nina van Pallandt) to find her missing husband, acclaimed author Roger Wade (Sterling Hayden).  With one foot in the hot seat and the other on the case, Marlowe begins to find information tying the two cases together, while inheriting a third burden : gangster Marty Augustine (Mark Rydell), a man upset about his money that Lennox took off with.  With all of these spinning plates teetering, Marlowe is forced to push forward in an effort to untangle the huge mess.
Technically and narrative-wise, this is extremely strong output from Altman and company.  In regard to that narrative, their take on the Marlowe character, one that has been portrayed by a number of actors (most famously the iconic Humphrey Bogart), is refreshing in the sense that his moral center balanced well against the last vestiges of the hippie aesthetic that remained in the early 1970s.  The times were changing, drugs were shaping the culture and the financial world differently, and ethics begin to shift.  Phillip Marlowe, however, refused to let this crack his code, and it stands out to great effect in The Long Goodbye.  Add in the fact that Elliot Gould is one of the most naturally hilarious people on film, and you’ve got a winning lead.
Many of Altman’s famous technical tricks show up in the film as well.  His eye for choosing locations makes Marlowe’s home aesthetically pleasing.  In single takes where long lenses and effective focus pulling is used, you can transition from Marlowe’s disheveled apartment to his new age hippie exhibitionist neighbors and on to the Los Angeles horizon.  His use of windows is magnificent in the film as well... both the way he shoots through them and the way he uses reflections.  He finds ways to survey areas with pans, or dolly shots, or truck shots, but you never get hung up on the camera moves.
The John Williams score is particularly unique in the sense that it is a singular composition played out in a vast array of techniques and motifs.  Be it jazzy versions, muzack versions, spanish guitar versions, rock versions, or any other style you can imagine, that chorus gets stuck in your head like a non-repetitive earworm.  At times, the song will switch from style to style within the space of a cut, which should feel jarring or schizophrenic, but instead connects the events taking place despite their proximity to one another within the sprawling Los Angeles landscape.
As mentioned before, Elliott Gould is brilliant in this film.  His easy going yet methodical nature is in tune with that of Marlowe, resulting in him selling an ending with an action not easily attributable to the Marlowe canon.  Sterling Hayden comes on like force in the film, only being bested in terms of alpha-male energy in a surprisingly intense performance from Henry Gibson.  Nina van Pallandt excels as the charming version of the false leads, while Jim Bouton sells the sucker-making role like a champ.  Mark Rydell plays the scorned gangster role pitch perfectly, almost turning the performance into a caricature of the role played, but somehow managing to dial things back enough to be taken seriously while remaining hilarious.  In a nice little bonus, one of his tough guys ends up being a young Arnold Schwarzenegger with an awesome 70s mustache.
It’s no secret that I love Robert Altman.  My goal is to get my foot in the door being a director/actor similar in style to John Cassavetes, but once I get established, I’m going full Altman.  The man has a stellar catalog, and made classic films spanning several decades, right up until his last one.  The Long Goodbye not only finds high placement among that catalog, it serves as a good introduction piece for those unfamiliar with Altman and his work.
