Hey guys just so you know I’ve read a bit about Kurt and Mona’s relationship in the books and it’s absolutely devastating in a mundane every day grey inevitably loneliness kind of way

rereading one of my favourite book series of all time after my mum went on an odyssey to get the second book that is somehow a rarity to find these days and I want you to know that I think no one captures that eerie, raw, and melancholic feeling of winter and darkness in a warmer and more beautiful way than Henning Mankell.

From the archives. . . I won't spoil the ending here, for those Mankell fans who haven't read it yet - but seriously, a Mankell fan who hasn't read this? - so I'll just say that the ending left me teary-eyed.
And as far as the aims for my own life go, they remain the same . . .
““It was you who built up that image of Sweden, not us,” he says. “Just like you built up an image of blonde Scandinavian girls. Look, Sweden is a very decent society. But you outside Sweden have created a sort of myth of it as a perfect society, paradise on earth. We never believed that. For us, yes, mistakes have been made in the past 20 years. But this idea that the murder of [former prime minister] Olof Palme, in 1986, was somehow the beginning of the end for Sweden … We didn’t lose our innocence with his death. Politics would have followed the same course. Market liberalism would have happened.””
Henning Mankell: the last Wallander | Books | The Guardian
I remember reading last year how long it was going to take for the English translation to come out, and almost weeping. And so now it’s here, eh? Ah well, nothing for it but to read it I guess, and say goodbye to a literary character I have found almost as fascinating as the inimitable George Smiley … and that’s saying something.
The case forces Wallander to reassess his life, and to revisit—often with upsetting consequences—some of the characters who have featured in it. The Troubled Man is a first-rate whodunnit. But it’s also a quiet, considered and respectful farewell; a meditation on a life honestly if imperfectly lived.
Should we be given the time, that’s really the most any of us can hope for: to look back and make peace with our choices, decisions, mistakes, triumphs, pain, and joy. To be able to say, “I did the best I could” and mean it, is all I’m aiming for, now that I’m sliding into old age.
Okay, perhaps it is time for Kurt to retire … and please let it be retirement and not death. I’d like to think that after all of that, he’s earned nice quiet walks on the shore with his dog.

Dimanche
