I can’t believe they’d managed to animate kusuriuri’s insane character design and then decided to make it even more insane. The most character ever

I ABSOLUTELY ADORE YOUR SQQ HE LOOKS SO FUCKINH DONE WITH LIFE
The recipe for SQQ is: calm on the outside, screaming on the inside.
#poorly drawn svsss#svsss#shen qingqiu#ask#No joke I'm pretty sure he is my favourite 'guy gets transporte'd to another world' character#I recently rewatched the (sadly never to be continued) animated version of SVSSS and I cant get over how perfect he is for the role#He is *so* done with everything going on around him. Forced to be calm and mean. Born to scream and be kind.#The gap between the internal and external dialogue is one of my fav character/writing quirks.#The personification of the 'he lied' dialogue tag.#Love how deep the SVSSS meta and literary analysis community gets with him. Piosplayhouse has opened my eyes to trans SQQ#what is the system is *not* a metaphor for pressure to adhere to societal norms of gender and sexuality?#I really need to finish the books...that is probably my biggest burning hole in my 'DNF' pile. I liked it! I just got busy.

nvm this is still on my brain. kim does not like to watch harry suffer… to say that kim takes satisfaction in harry’s pain is a huge misconstruing of his character.
the “getting thrashed like a schoolboy” line comes from a board game, lol. it’s a tease, not a cruelty. there’s never any line that implies that Kim enjoys seeing Harry taking actual morale damage.
he can be amused if you fail a check, but the check is always relatively inconsequential, and again, Harry isn’t taking damage in these.
Failing to pry the trash bin open:
Failing to shatter Ruby’s lorry window:
(also in both of these examples he only responds smugly if you choose for Harry to stubbornly dig in his heels. if Harry gets huffy, Kim teases. If Harry backs down right away Kim won’t rub it in, which feels significant to me! it reminds me of that recent post goin around about Kim meeting your energy!)
and here’s some reactions to failed checks where he does take damage.
Failing the jump to get your cloak:
Failing to break down Plaisance’s door:
he’s not laughing if Harry’s taking damage because he’s not a dick lol.
aaaaand here’s some other instances of morale/health damage and kim’s reactions.
alternate dialogue for failing the harbor jump:
after the call with precinct 41:
seeing bullet holes in the wall:
most significant examples to argue this point for me come when harry has done something to jeopardize the RCM’s image. which kim goes on and on about the importance of maintaining— and yet even here, he still extends worry and assurance.
telling Billie about her husband and handling it badly:
hardie authority check failure cock carousel:
aaaaand the car. this line is one of the most mask-off kim moments we get in the game in my opinion, honestly.
tying this back to the schoolboy line— that line doesn’t show up if you have a negative reputation with Kim. if you have <1 rep, it gets replaced with him calling it “about four hours of our lives that we'll never get back,” lol.
it’s affectionate ribbing!! twisting it into anything else is bizarre 2 me lmao!
anyways. kim is a foil to every other cop we meet in the game specifically because he doesn’t view harry as a punching bag or a lost cause. gottlieb does nothing but sling jabs and glib jokes about harry’s health. torson+mclaine and the others laugh at harry’s panic attack over the radio. in response to harry’s suicide-by-car attempt(!!!!) jean yells about RCM budget. all kim’s lines in response to harry’s check failures and health-damage are consistent, explicit textual contrast against the callousness of the rest of the RCM. twisting kim’s character here requires a bad faith interpretation of the whole game.
#disco elysium#kim kitsuragi#sometimes i think that fandom Hot Takes get posted just for the sake of contrasting with the majority interpretation of the media#which can be fun lol. i personally love being a pretentious contrarian when the shoe fits.#keyword when the shoe fits#sometimes it just comes off as#the thing where positive interpretations of the thing are somehow seen as lesser or naive#which i feel is so antithetical to DE’s core philosophy#it’s not naive to interpret a hopeful story as hopeful#it’s not naive to interpret a kind character as indeed kind#kindness has as much literary value as cruelty in storytelling#overcorrecting for the sake of overcorrecting in this case just feels very. meanspirited#i don’t want to come off as antagonizing because we are all just posting about a video game on tumblr dot com at the end of the day#it’s okay to Have Differing Opinions On Media#but like. there’s a reason the post Did Not Resonate lol#oh also if anyone has a link to the other post i referenced i’d love to link it in the post properly i just couldn’t find it </3#me talking

(i feel like analyzing stuff again so here we go) kaz is smart because he knows people. he loves puzzles, loves locks, loves taking things apart to figure out how they work. he says in soc that you figure people out like you figure anything else out, by taking it apart. kaz is smart because he finds enough out about people to make assumptions.
he knows what people will do, and often times it leaves the ones being duped going "how did he do that? how did he know?" kaz never truely knows something will 100% happen, he's just assuming it will and is almost always right.
in the begining of soc, when the crows are breaking matthias out of hellgate, kaz assumes wrong, though. he knows that jesper has a reputation for being late, so he assumes that jesper will take to the task of releasing the animals like he will anything else he does, and be late doing it. he has, in some sense, taken jesper apart. he knows what jesper does, and he plans around this assumption, however ends up being wrong. nothing extremely consequential happens because of his assumption, but it proves that kaz will assume things with confidence.
a huge aspect to why kaz is so successful in his planning and overall schemes is because he knows how to make a good assumption. he has inej gathering him intel, which enables him to make such confident and correct guesses about how people will act.
one instance of kaz's assumptions being correct is the whole geels and 19 burstraat situation in the beginning of soc. when kaz threatens to burn down geels' lover's home, geels could have not cared, could have shot kaz right there, but he didn't. geels doesn't, and kaz continues very boldly facing him. why? because kaz knows how geels will act.
another instance is in ck when kaz kidnaps alys and uses her to get inej back. at this point, kaz knows how van eck will act. van eck has already duped kaz once, and i imagine after this one of the things kaz does to insure it never happens again is over analyzing and taking him apart. it works in this instance, because kaz has already seen how much van eck cares about a "worthy heir," and alys is literally holding that. kaz has taken van eck apart, and had figured him out enough to make a bold and correct act based on assumption.
all this to say, kaz thinks and thinks and thinks and is always thinking and picking everything apart, and that is the key to why he can get away with everything he does. and maybe one day his assumptions that make him so smart will fail him, and maybe one day they'll be fatally wrong.
#i'm back at it again with the literary analysis#my english teacher loves me#weird statement but yk what i mean#i feel like (and know) that i'm constantly picking apart this duology and i don't think i'll stop anytime soon#i could yap forever but i'll stop for y'all's sake#UGH i just love kaz's character so much#so COMPLEX and so much to ANALYZE#kaz brekker#side note yall i've been spelling brekker like brekkar for the longest time and no one was gonna TELL ME???#kazzle dazzle#six of crows#literary analysis#yapping#yapping fr#six of crows fandom#soc

low key i think to deny Riko's trauma is to deny his narrative importance in the story.
like Riko's trauma related to his father parallels neil's. His concept of brotherhood adds complexity to Andrew and Aaron's relationship. He acts not just as an antagonist but as a foil to other character's relationship to trauma and violence.
to solely view riko through the lense of his actions is to miss the point. He is a character in a story, not a real breathing human being.
#i don't know guys like i though we were having fun here#lets go back to making up literary motifs that are probably nonexistent in a self published book series thats basically a sports manga#i'll start#isn't it nifty that riko was abandoned by his father and then abused and ostracized by his guardian figure in a very similar way to neil#isn't it fun that riko was cast aside by his father for his brother just as andrew was cast aside by his mother for his brother#isnt it fun that aaron kills someone to protect his brother while riko's story ends with his brother killing him#love earned through death in both ways#isnt it fun that riko's hunt to be the best ends with his brother killing him in the same way he essentially 'killed' kevin#by smashing his hand#isnt it fun how riko is just as desperate for love and attention and belonging as everyone else#there is a story in which riko is saved and heals from his past in the same way every other character does#the fun part is that story exists yet it is not the story that is told#like come onnnnn#“riko is evil”#“rikos trauma isnt as bad as *insert character”#“riko did this - riko did that - bluh bluh bluh”#im boreeeeeeddd#gnat be quiet#riko moriyama

Can I just say that I was, and still am, a little heartbroken over the POV shift in The Prisoner's Throne? Like, don't get me wrong, I love hoof boy as much as the next guy, but I was SO in love with Wren's POV. Still, months after finishing the duology, I feel unsatisfied. There was something about Oak's POV that lacked for me. For some, it was golden because they got more Jurdan content (based on the overwhelming amount of discourse surrounding Jurdan in TPT rather than Oak and Wren, the protagonists, but I digress). For me though, it was a bit disappointing. It also just felt impersonal compared to Wren's (the shift to 3rd person didn't help with this). I fell in love with The Stolen Heir as soon as I began it, and Wren quickly became my favorite protagonist I'd read from the Holly Black faerie world. I loved her backstory, I loved her perspective, I loved her reserved yet determined personality. I LOVED WREN. I wanted more of HER story, and in TPT, I was left feeling robbed of it. She felt so absent in her own sequel, which I understand helped contribute to the plot in a way, but still. I missed Wren. The way she was written in TSH was so elevated; it was such a fascinating read for me.
Idk. I just still feel a little bit let down by it, which I'm so heartbroken about because I was fully expecting it to be a five star read for me. I wonder if I had a different perspective than most having read tfota AND modern faerie tales before the duology? Because for me, Wren's character, the worldbuilding, and the quest elements of TSH were so much fun and provided so much interesting context for Holly's universe! And I think I was also not so desperate for Jurdan content as other readers may have been. I wonder if TPT took the direction it did because of pressure Holly felt not to disappoint loyal Jurdan fans? And don't get me wrong, I am a loyal Jurdan fan, but I'm also a loyal Holly Black faerie fan in general, and I was excited to get to know this new, interesting character. And then she was taken away from me. Or at least it felt that way :/
Does literally anybody else understand this? Or was everybody else too distracted by Cardan and Jude for all of TPT lmao
#the prisoners throne#the folk of the air#the stolen heir#wren x oak#suren#jurdan#holly black#sorry idk what got me back on my holly black faerie bullshit#but i just really love this literary universe and its characters!!!!#sorry twilight mutuals I've been going crazy with the unrelated posts lately#might need to make my blog slightly less twilight centric so that I don't feel guilty posting unrelated things lmao#my url will never change tho don't u fear

okay i don’t have the means of explaining it right now, but i entirely, 100%, agree and am elated by the decisions gege has made in chapter 261 regarding gojo.
and i really do mean it. there is something so pitiful, so perversive, so human, yet so vulturous in the entire situation; to drain yourself of your blood and life to keep the needy satiated, yet when you are dead, they eat your liver and gnaw on your bones
#i am in my feelings#cannabalism is genuinely my favorite literary device and metaphor#not for love but for the never-ending consumption of mankind#jjk 261#jjk#jujutsu kaisen#jujutsu kaisen 261#chapter 261#gojo satoru#satoru gojo#jjk gojo#UGH#gege claims to hate gojo but then continue to beautifully develop the complexity of his character#so well done#i dont think it’s even supposed to be a commentary on gojo#judt about jujutsu society#but in the process#he had to realize that gojo HAD to come back

But does your man buy an entire hawking establishment just because he saw a painting of a hawking party where one of the women kind of resembled you?
#helen by maria edgeworth#is equal parts slog and wild ride#i can see why this would have been popular in jane austen's time#but it's exactly why it's dated now#all these upper-crust people talking about current literary figures and customs#flinging around french all the time#compare that to austen's middle-class country people#who live in a different culture than us but have a lot of the same normal daily problems#also austen's pacing and dialogue are so much better#the number of times characters stop to expound upon some philosophical point!#just in the course of daily conversation!#this story's fun enough for what it is#(digging the 'love triangle' where one of the guys is just going after the girl because the other guy annoys him)#but while i can see why austen might have enjoyed edgeworth i hope she knows she was the better author

Look.
Ace Attorney fandom.
I know why people don't like Turnabout Bigtop. I am among the people who dislike Turnabout Bigtop.
But I GET why people like the case. I'm not going to be one of those annoying people who just blindly dump on it because I hate those mfs too.
Thing about Bigtop isn't that it sucks. Thing isn't the weird grooming stuff (though that is a huge part of it). It's not that it could've been good.
It's that - in my personal OPINION - it could have been *great*.
I think it had the potential to be one of the best third cases in the trilogy. It had everything; a fun and goofy setting fit for a pretty dang goofy lawyer game - where the environment itself had jokes and quips and one-liners and mishaps and tomfoolery written all over it, it had the previous case introducing a very interesting and important plotline that gave background for one of the more well-loved characters while also introducing an equally fucked up and lovable new one who was a child forced into a shit childhood of naivete in a CIRCUS with another character who was very naive and childish - whose interactions could have been funny and cute and reflective of said shit from the previous case (seriously she becomes such an important character in the 4th case, WHY would they not include her in this one for some character development? How did they fuck up letting a CHILD explore a CIRCUS?? That would have made the interactions flow MUCH better).
They had a pretty good, sympathetic killer imo, a morally dubious victim, an asshole of a client (who was pretty flat admittedly in-game, but I like his weird, topsy-turvy reasoning for it in the anime. Also, I think Max being kinda a dick would have bode well for the themes of Farewell since most of his clients up to this point have been like...nice? Not nice, but sympathetic, but him having to defend someone who's innocent but a prick would have shown him that just because someone is an asshole, doesn't mean they deserve to suffer for it and that they have the potential to grow as people, which is almost a complete foil to what Matt was. Ultimately, I would have loved the contrast of them as clients and I think it would have also served as character development for Phoenix, especially with his low-empathy tendencies).
They just didn't think that far ahead. They just didn't execute it well enough. They just decided to make three of the adult characters fight for the hand in marriage of a teenage girl. (Bat's part of the story was actually kinda good if he was just YOUNGER, I think him doing that for Regina would have been a stupid thing someone in the circus would do to impress their crush. Damn you Ace Attorney and your weird treatment of underage girls!!)
It just flopped and that's ok.
Even though it kinda sucked, it can still mean something to me.
Also I'm a Moe Curls apologist. I liked him, shut up.
#didn't care for the dialogue either.#DON'T GET ME STARTED ABOUT FRANZISKA DON'T DON'T DON'T DON'T DON'T YOU DARE GET ME STARTED#THIS CASE WAS SO GOOD FOR HER DEVELOPMENT THAT'S NOT EVEN A “COULD HAVE” THING#sure she could've been fleshed out a bit more#but the stuff we get from our interactions with her in this case is GOOD. SHIT. It's just that this case is so hated that it's overshadowed#and yeah. i like Moe Curls. i think he's cool and he added some flair in an otherwise bleak case.#i think his whole unfunny clown schtick was very entertaining. it reminded me of this one shel silverstein poem i loved as a kid#clooney the clown.#tbh ive wanted to rewrite Bigtop for a while now#get a script together and all that. but im an amateur writer who's burnt out as shit and never posts anything writing related#except analysis i get way too excited and proud of. oh well#maybe someday.#also rq why does every other tripple-a game get really good in depth analysis video essays#with their complex literary themes talked about#but with Ace Attorney - a game about reading longer than most books - half the fans have the absolute most dogshit literacy comprehension#it's actually painful. ESPECIALLY with Franziska's character#anyway i'll stop.#ace attorney trilogy#ace attorney#ace attorney justice for all#turnabout big top#franziska von karma#phoenix wright#phoenix wright ace attorney#pearl fey#farewell my turnabout#moe curls#regina berry#ig ore if this is incomprehensible i did not proofread this.#i simply do not like how fran's only traits to somea these mfs is “annoying overemotional teenager haha grumpy whip lady”

I’m sorry but the flat way that the fandom tackles the Enji Todoroki problem is so blegh. Yes, how he treated them (especially Shouto—we don’t 100% know if Touya’s training was the same, especially because he actually liked his training) was wrong, the way he treated his wife was wrong, the way he ignored his other kids is wrong. HOWEVER, him cutting Touya off from training was NOT 100% wrong. Should he have treated it more delicately? Yes. Should he have been more considerate to his kid? Yes. Should he have gotten him some kind of therapy to help him cope with his obvious mental issues? Also yes. But cutting him off from training when he gets hurt doing so and it’s unavoidable is NOT wrong. He was trying to prevent exactly what happened in the end. Maybe he could have revisited it a few years later when training isn’t all Touya is and looked into support items, idk, but Enji’s approach was the right decision in the wrong way.
#really Touya had some mental issues that couldn’t have just been from enji#because looking at it he wasn’t as bad on screen to Touya as he was to shouto#I feel like no one talks about that#shouto’s trauma kinda gets overlooked because he was strong enough to overcome it#but it was still there and erasing it erases his whole character arc#and really in the end touya did bad things. he became a villain. he killed people#despite the whole ‘touya died dabi was born’ thing they had going on (which was NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN LITERALLY#ITS A LITERARY ELEMENT THAT EXPRESSES FIGURATIVE REBIRTH) people in this fandom oh so love to disconnect touya from dabi#they are the SAME PERSON#touya tried to KILL shouto when he was a baby#he has had VERY deep-seated issues for a very long time#and honestly I think he was born with it#and the environment he grew up in made it worse#that’s just my two cents tho#shouto todoroki#touya todoroki#dabi todoroki#dabi#mha dabi#mha#bnha#enji todoroki#todoroki#todoroki family

I will never make this because it would be for an audience of one (me) but ever since reading "If we Were Villains" (story about serious drama kids in college who perform shakespeare and deal with a murder) I have been entertaining the thought of a crack fic crossover with High School Musical The Musical The Series where the staff decides they will no longer put on shakespeare after the tragic accident that happened at Thanksgiving, because Shakespeare plays would only increase the tension and drama. So they hire Ms. Jen who decides their spring play will actually be High School Musical (which exists in the 90s in this universe) and it ruins the vibe so much that everyone gives up on being dark and mysterious because they're universally pissed at Ms Jen for making them learn choreoraphed basketball dancing.
#if we were villains is actually genuinely good and has actual literary worth and pulls from shakespeare in an intelligent meaningful way#but unfortunately all i can do is comedy so this is the only fan content i have to offer :(#THE THING IS iwwv is just hsmtmts if it hsmtmts was good and also they committed crimes#they utilize the same parallel of casting choices with real life drama which I love#umm so casting: Meredith would be Sharpay Obvi. I think it would be really funny if James was cast as Ryan bc they hate eachother and would#have to pretend to be siblings working together. And I think ashley tisdale and Lucas Gabreel actually didn't get along when filming#also i love the thought of Ms Jen looking at James and going “i know what you are”#HOWEVER it would be more interesting if james was Chad to Oliver's Troy (which is really just reversing their Romeo and Juliet moment)#bc chad is like nooo don't do theater... stick with me and do basketball... but it would be Coded Subtextually#Unfortunately Wren would be typecast as Gabriella and I don't think that would cause drama bc I don't believe James actually liked her!#I think it was comp het bc she was very sweet and nonthreatening as opposed to Meredith's big flirting energy so she would be a “safe” crus#lets lean into that actually. this gives Wren a chance to have a personality (bc I enjoy this book but it is not good at fleshing out women#So oliver and Wren spend more time together and kind of talk about James a little and Wren is like yeah James is very sweet#and I like him but it feels so hard to get him to feel comfortable with me... i guess he's just closed off and doesn't talk much#we also get to see more of her personality and interests maybe she's like I relate to gabriella because I also like to Read :) feminism#and oliver is like Hmm That Is Not My Experience With Him perhaps our bond is deeper and James does like me Hm#And then Meredith can flirt with him as Sharpay and James gets pissed and in character gets very intense about how Troy can't join THEATER#that's why he's upset and sad bc sharpay represents theater and only that reason and nothing else and he isn't in love with oliver At All#Alexander can be Ryan now since James is Chad (and he's also Gay) and Filippa can be Kenzie bc they're both queer coded#Anyway at rehearsal one day Meredith and James and Oliver are having their fighting over troy moment and then Meredith stops and is like#wait guys. This musical is so freaking stupid. why are we even doing this#and their mutual frustration at their art being turned into a farce is enough to bond them together and they're like#we need to focus on our REAL enemy: ms Jen#and then they hatch a scheme and it's probably like. They dump a bucket of fake blood on her at opening night a la carrie#and then put on their own rebellious production... it still has to be a musical because i like musicals#families with children are in the audience and they're like OK FOLKS! HERE'S ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!#if we were villains#iwwv#hsmtmts#high school musical the musical the series

Interesting that the first case we see Xie Lian solve is basically about how love and devotion can go wrong.
Xuan Ji loves and worships Pei Ming to the point of obsession but it’s a selfish love. She doesn’t really care about how Pei Ming feels or what he wants—only about forcing her own feelings onto him. Even to the point of hurting herself in order to try and force Pei Ming to stay with her.
It’s a great contrast to how Hua Cheng handles his own love and devotion to Xie Lian. Hua Cheng’s love is one without expectations or demands. He’s never needed Xie Lian to return his feelings or even know of them because to him respecting Xie Lian’s autonomy and choices has always been more important.
Where Xuan Ji’s love is selfish Hua Cheng’s is selfless.
#tgcf#hua cheng#xuan ji#xie lian#literary foils#character contrasts#i love hua cheng so much#like how mxtx is like: alright here are all the pitfalls of this trope#now let me dismantle all of them one by one in this essay of love and devotion done right

Saying this an Elia Martell fan from what little we know of her, but I'm really sick of how fandom sees her as nothing but a perpetual victim and/or hater of Lyanna and Rhaegar. Where's fandom content of her being kind to baby Tyrion or headcanons of her plotting with Rhaegar against Aerys? Makes me wish GRRM would write more Fire and Blood books to flesh her out more outside of the "pretty victim" fanon Sansa stans want her to be.
It's actually so frustrating cause there are great conversations + theorizing that could be going on surrounding her character because we know we're going to be learning more about her in the future, but a lot of her "fans" are just stuck on using her as a prop. And honestly? That's because the more we learn about her, the more she moves away from being fandom's favorite passive self-insert character. If George has her doing anything it breaks their idea of her being the perfect victim which is what they love about her. They don't even like her character organically, they just like that it gives them a justification to hate Rhaegar and/or Lyanna. I'm personally neutral-positive about Elia, but I am very interested in learning more about her character. George has kept that portion of the story intentionally vague for a reason and I can't wait to see why.
#ask#anon#elia martell#neutral positive in that I have empathy for Elia and want to learn more about her but I can't really say I love her character#because I just don't feel like we know enough about her and I'm not a huge fan of filling the gaps in with headcanons#I'm neutral-neutral about Rhaegar because to me his actions + motivations aren't as fleshed out as Lyanna's so I can't really make#a judgement until will learn more...I'm interested in that but for now my goodwill for him comes from him and Dany being literary mirrors#I might be biased but I just feel like we have a better sense of Lyanna's character because of Arya + Ned's thoughts on her#I can theorize about her actions/reactions in a way that I can't with Rhaegar#but if you go into any of their tags it's full of people making statements as factual without anything to back it up
