❤️‍🔥 WE ARE INFINITELY DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT COMEGRANATE, THE ZINE, IS COMING INTO THE LIGHT...
Comegranate is a postcolonial & feminist reinterpretation of the Garden of Eden. It imagines the ways in which imperialist structures have broken down our connectivity and communal intimacies. The rituals we have taken for granted are now all we have to cling to of the old world, and in a world of perpetual connection we are all still searching for something more.
This issue will explore feminine displacement in particular, taking into account the theory of Hélène Cixous’s ‘écriture féminine’, Luce Irigiray’s embodied divinity in the feminine & feminine displacement within language, and Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red. We especially are looking for narrative work that includes dialogue of some kind (whether between two characters or between a character and the reader) to fuel the idea of a story within a story.
We are happy to organise shoots for stylists, photographers, hair/makeup artists, models, and any similar creatives. Please feel free to reach out to us with any concepts you are interested in or wish to execute.

Ibn ʿArabi on water and divine lowness
Tumblr media
Commentary on Ibn ʿArabi's The Bezels of Wisdom
Tumblr media
I guess I just love this because I've been thinking about the directionality of the divine lately, feeling a bit of an aversion to the privileging of the heavenward direction above all else—which I associate with hierarchy, ascension, Plotinus. I've been thinking against Simone Weil's conception of grace as that which enables ascent against the force of gravity, a hoisting upward, which is often a kind of turning away from the created world, a disavowal of earthy existence. What can I say. I love the earth. I'll keep on loving the earth. I want to think with the low, the mineral, with water, which always finds the lowest point. Water is that which supports life from beneath.
How did I find my way to Islamic mysticism? In the Abrahamic traditions, it really does offer the most affirming view of creation. We're all the breath of God.
What would it mean to find God below?
If you let a rope fall down, it will fall on God.
As I wrote in my review of the experimental film Last Things by Deborah Stratman:
Why not found a religion based on fear and respect of the mineral kingdom? Death is not ascent but descent, a return to our mineral form, as Mallo and Cixous know.
From Agustín Fernández Mallo's The Book of All Loves: “The fact that teeth and bones are all that remains of us after death is proof that our ultimate identity is mineral. We do not ascend, we are not on some track towards that which the ancients formulated as spiritual; on the contrary, we sink down into the most durable physical matter. A kind of periodic table of elements is what we are; more of the earth even than earth itself.”
From Hélène Cixous’s Three Steps on the Ladder of Writing: “There is passage through the animal state, then through the vegetal state, and so we move away from humankind; from the vegetal we descend into the earth, by the stem, by the root, until we reach what doesn’t concern us, although it exists and inscribes itself, which is of the mineral order, although it doesn’t hold together since we are aiming toward disassembly, toward decomposition.”
*
Ibn ‘Arabī, speaking of divine intention, writes in the Futūhāt:
"It is like water. Its station is that it descends or flows on the earth."

If the essential theater is like the plague, it is not because it is contagious, but because like the plague it is a revelation, the bringing forth, the exteriorization of a depth of latent cruelty by means of which all the perverse possibilities of the mind, whether of an individual or a people, are localized.
- Antonin Artaud, Theater and its Double.

Tumblr media
I’m soft spoken,
In a way that contrasts my sharp teeth and my pointed corners.
Unapproachable, unapologetic yet, open and falling apart at the seams
Fierce, and guarded with expectations that are as high as my walls, the same walls I spend my days painting the colors of all the flowers I have never received.
Lavender to grey Girlhood to decay
I yearn for things that will wither if I dare to embrace and my moral compass is almost always out of my hands reach. I exchange a piece of it for every new defense mechanism i pick up, and I regret nothing…
not even my tongue that is still stuck in my windpipe because in my hast to run away from spotlight I forgot to tuck it right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hold on to ghosts of sentiments that i let filter through me
I, a distant soul that walk through earth aimlessly.
I linger but my traces refuse to hold I don’t get close because i can’t afford being left behind, I dwindle, but i don’t let anyone touch me because being starved taught me that we don’t need to overanalyze the intentions behind every touch; we just need to prevent ourselves from getting hurt.
It’s a collective we, because I learned to stand behind a wall of who I’m supposed to be.
Even if I do it inadequately.
I’m hypersensitive, yet i’d rather shed my own skin than cling to unwanted love that have no potential for growth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m lovable, that much I know
but I don’t believe in falling, It’s not that I don’t want to believe in an unadulterated emotion..
but however I look at at love. it seems fabricated
So now, i only want it with a pre-negotiated price.
With a clear definition and stable steps that I can take one at a time.
That’s how it goes for kindnesses too, as something in me believes that we need to earn it.
Maybe it’s the part of me that i inherited from my mother,
the same part that is still searching for ways to sacrifice more, otherwise we’re selfish.

i love you like a rotten dog, i love you like my canines are falling out of my gums. like a monster, like a beast. like something not worth loving back.
Marie Lu The Young Elites / @/bloodyhellharry (on tumblr) from The Infamous Willow Prank, Part Three / Hélène Cixous excerpt from Love of the Wolf, "Stigmata: Escaping Texts" / @/thymoss (on tumblr) / Virginia Woolf The Waves / Deborah Landau Soft Targets / Tory Adkisson Anecdote of the Pig
i. Marie Lu, The Young Elites
[ "So. Tell me, little wolf. Would you like to punish those who have wronged you?" ]
ii. @/bloodyhellharry
[ Pencil drawing of three panels of a comic strip. The first image is of a closed hatch. The second image shows the hatch being opened slightly. The third imagine is the largest. It shows a wolf with a large shadow, snarling at the cracked hatch. "IF HE'D GOT / AS FAR AS THIS HOUSE, / HE'D HAVE MET A FULLY GROWN / WEREWOLF" ]
iii. Hélène Cixous, Love of the Wolf
[ "The lamb loves its wolf. The wolf turns all white and starts quivering out of love of the lamb. The lamb loves the wolf's fragility, and the wolf loves the frail one's force. The wolf is now the lamb's lamb and the lamb has tamed the wolf. Love blackens the lamb." ]
iv. @/thymoss
[ Messy sketch of the head of an animal with teeth surrounding the outside of it's face, pointing away from it. "I will / remove my teeth, for I / want to remain / kind despite / my anger" ]
v. Virginia Woolf, The Waves
[ "I press you to me. / Come, pain, feed on me. / Bury our fangs into my flesh. Tear me asunder. I sob, I sob." ]
vi. Deborah Landau, Soft Targets
[ "We are animal hungry down to our delicate bones." ]
vii. Tory Adkisson, Anecdote of the Pig
[ "Do you still believe myths / can save you? Foolish creature. / Let me be clear: every version of the story / ends with you being slaughtered." ]
