Please keep western NC and the rest of Southern Appalachia in your hearts. Those areas aren’t prepared for hurricanes as they almost never get hit with them. I understand that it can be frustrating to watch some rich influencer on Tiktok decide to wait out the storm in their beachfront property in Florida, but this ain’t Florida, and the folks who’s lives are being destroyed certainly ain’t rich.
Instead of sending hate towards innocent humans that weren’t able to, or didn’t think to evacuate, maybe direct your energy towards something productive like fundraising to rebuild the entire towns that were demolished.

"NHC forecasts of Helene's landfall were extraordinarily consistent, particularly after the PTC stage (beginning with the 5th forecast in this sequence). At that point, all the forecasts fell within about a 40-nm-wide circle, and nailed the timing within ~2 h. (1/5)"

Every day I see more and more pop myth takes that make me want to pull my eyelashes out. No, Ares was not a protector of women. No, Aphrodite was not a war goddess (and you know what, being the goddess of sex and lust and beaut is okay!). No, Hera is not an irredeemable villain. No, Zeus is not evil incarnate. No Achilles isn’t without fault or some ‘gay softboi’ icon (he’s literally presented in the Iliad as someone who is proud to a fault. You’re supposed to recognize that he’s selfish and arrogant). No, Demeter was not an overbearing mother nor was Hades some sort of misunderstood, brooding knight in shining armour. Medea is allowed to commit heinous crimes and still be a sympathetic character. Jason… deserves all the hate he gets, respectfully.
Off the top of my head, I think Helen is one of the few people who gets complex, interesting characterization in modern retellings and discourse, ironically enough. She’s allowed to be vain and aware of her own beauty while also often having a great deal of agency. At the same time, she is frequently depicted as both victim and as offender. She’s allowed to want to be in Troy, but also to miss her husband and daughter.
Some days I feel like I could write essays about pop mythology and the way people reduce mythological figures to one dimensional caricatures. And how these retellings are never as progressive as people think, fixing some issues but exacerbating others. I do think retellings end up being an excellent resource for identifying what social issues bother us and how we would like to address them.
For example, we see a lot of feminist retellings that want to show women as capable of the same things as men, and in so doing they reject or deride their own femininity. But a retelling that is ultimately saying that masculinity is more interesting or valuable than femininity isn’t a truly feminist retelling, but it does show us that our society struggles to find femininity compatible with strength or courage.

According to Dares the Phrygian Helen has a beauty mark between her brows! What do you know? Greeks possibly considered moles attractive from that time hehe 😜 but now I remember this amazing mycenaean female head from around 1300 BC
Tumblr media
And now I imagine Helen when doing her makeup instead of painting the usual sun on her forehead she just draws the dots around her beauty mark instead! 🤔

Hello world! I have internet now (power came back on 3/4 hours ago) and this is a WILD time. My little mountain community I grew up in and the surrounding areas are struggling heavily lately and the emergency responders are so busy and they themselves can’t even reach everyone who needs checking in on due to flooding, mudslides, sinkholes, and over all inability to GET to the patients in need. Everyone please send healing and loving energies to Western NC, the rural surrounding areas alongside creeks/rivers, Burnsville NC, Marshall NC, Hendersonville NC, everyone is hanging tight and leaning on family, neighbors, and overall community. And no one has had phone signal for days, so unless they have now regained power (internet)
We are good over here and the animals have been very brave during the storms and going potty outside, and hanging with us in the candlelight, flashlight glows, and watching the little rascals and crazy rich Asians via the iPad (because it’s all we had downloaded) the animals have been so snuggly and helpful during all this.

Hey folks, friendly reminder that, even though I might be a queer leftist, I’m ALSO a born and raised country hick. If you’re out here posting that the folks out in west North Carolina (my home state) and the rest of Southern Appalachia somehow “deserved” the catastrophic damage that Helene brought, block me. I’m not asking you to block me for my own internet experience, I’m telling you that it is within your best interest to block me.
To the folks at home who are donating supplies, sharing links, or even just prayin’ or keeping those impacted in your hearts, I love you and appreciate your kindness. Please keep it up, if possible, this won’t be “fixed” in a week, in fact, it never will be. This is Katrina level, there are already 200 confirmed dead, and they haven’t even started looking for the deceased.
I hope everyone reading this has the day they deserve <3

hello my friends~
where i live there was minimal damage. i cannot say the same for the people living on the coastal areas. three schools are not opening today with the rest of us because of damage. i have no idea how many of my students will be here today or what they've gone through.
3 school days off and it feels like a lifetime. if you look at the damage from helene and you look in the tampa bay area - particularly the barrier islands - that's what people around me are dealing with. all i got was some small tree branches and a minor fence repair. some people lost their whole lives.
it's the difference between the storm surge areas vs. not. like yeah some trees came down in the non-surge areas, and there was some flooding in the usual non-surge areas, but the storm surge was the big one. that's what did the most. i love living in florida but you couldn't pay me enough money to live on the coast like that.
anyway. i am personally (physically) fine. my house is fine. my dog is fine. mentally, i am all over the place. and i suspect my mental state is going to heavily depend on how my students are coping.
