Helena's arc was a lot to do with reckoning with what "family" meant to her, at the tail end of Post-Crisis continuity, around the Batman: Reborn era. "Family" was always an important theme for Helena because of her struggle with the mafia, which is its own twisted sort of "family", and considering how lonely a path she walked in her first years as a vigilante. Now surrounded by a big, though loose, network of friends and allies, ever-independent Helena has to come to grips with what they mean to her.

We see Helena striking up a fast and trusting partnership with Renee Montoya. We see her and Dick as close friends and colleagues who've come a long way from their "agreeable indiscretion". We her accepting the harsh truths of her "thing" with Catman. We see Babs Gordon promoting Helena to field commander of the Birds of Prey, and we see her earn it. The moment I find most potent is Helena challenging Shiva to a death battle to save Dinah Lance, and almost knowingly sacrificing herself because she's decided that her complicated family, though it is not ALL that's worth fighting for (in the mafia sense), is still something she'd lay her life down for in a heartbeat.

Helena's always been all hard exterior over a soft core, especially since "family" never meant something simple and safe to her, so it's nice to see her find something meaningful in it right before continuity ended.

I was watching a video about hulkbuster armour (shout out to comics drake) and one of the commenters said it only exists for people to destroy it to prove how powerful they are. I think the DC equivalent of this is Lady Shiva. While some writers see her as a character with her own goals and motivations in so many stories she's plopped in so the MC can fight her to look super cool and strong. Even if they really should not have won that fight.

What gets me most about these stories is the writer makes no effort to even consider why Shiva would waste her time interacting with, to her, a rando.
