Any Howdy ideas to share? /nf
Oh I have So Many ideas. Pulled out my notes for this! Gonna start with family bc I've been wanting to share.
Howdy is The middle child. This man suffers from middle child syndrome big time, his parents hardly acknowledge him unless they're complaining about his career choice/comparing him to his siblings.
Speaking of! He has 15 siblings! They have names and traits and I wasted So Much Time on them! So here a list from oldest to youngest! as well their jobs
Heather- house wife w no kids. married big rich
Huntley- restaurant owner w multiple locations
Hailey- successful crafts/furniture business
Hayden- same business with Hailey
Heath- plane engineer
Hector- commercial pilot
Henry- big industry CEO
Hannah- chain store assistant manager
Howard "Howdy"- You know this one!
Holland- part-time job hoping
Harrison- college student
Harvey- college student
Harwin- college student
Harmony- student
Hope- student
Holly- student
3-4, 5-6, and 15-16 are twins. 11-13 are triplets. I don't have ages bc they need to be reworked. Yes all their names start with H. I thought it would be funny but it was Not Worth It. /hj
Back to Howdy! He loves all of his younger siblings. He's not as close to his older siblings with the exception of Huntley bc I love him. He actively dislikes Henry and Heather bc they belittle him a Lot.
Howdy, Hannah, and Holland were The trio of the family. Howdy is closest to these two.
He was also hugely involved in raising/taking care of the little ones. He was the only one that could get the triplets to take a bath in a reasonable amount of time with little mess/fuss. No one knows how he did it.
Stepping away from family!
It's so easy to make Howdy laugh. He makes a big deal out of jokes and having a good sense of humor, but he'll laugh at anything! He just hides this fact to save himself the supposed embarrassment. He almost Laughed Out Loud at one of Frank's jokes! Frank Frankly! The Unfunniest Neighbor! The memory haunts him. /j
Cuddle bug. Someone please hug the caterpillar. He just wants to give his loved ones a big squeeze and in some cases never let them go (cough Barnaby cough). If you fall asleep against him he will cherish the moment but will playfully complain later.
Cries if/when anything happens to the shop. Water leak? Sobs. Stain? Inconsolable. He loves his little shop so much.
He may scam people but he's really not in it for huge profits. He's just like that. Refuses to Ever open another store. There's only one Howdy so there will only be one Howdy's Place!
Oblivious but falls in love easy. He won't realize he's in love but he always falls first. Just give him time to realize it.
Will flirt with his partner but flusters when it's returned.
Despite being a workaholic, he gets plenty of rest and is pretty good with self care! He finds it very important to be well rested and healthy if he's gonna work so much. He also sleeps like a rock.
I have this idea to specifically contrast with Eddie! Who does Not know when to stop working. Howdy complains often of Eddie's sleep schedule (or lack thereof). This had led to Eddie being forced to nap in a big armchair behind the store counter on multiple occasions.
Howdy has essentially adopted the neighbors as family. Except for Barnaby I guess bc he's in love with the big blue dog.
One the youngest neighbors. He refuses to acknowledge this as he's had enough of being the baby brother thank you very much.
oh golly this got long very quick.. so that's all for now! 😅

The Ultimate Sandman Character Tag List!
I recently published a tag list for all female Sandman characters I have written about or posted art for (I’ve just added to it and tidied it up. The tags auto-update, so feel free to bookmark it if you want to stay in the loop about the Sandwomen), which made me think:
Why not do that for all the characters for quick reference?
Tumblr media
So if you’re interested in one particular character, you can just quickly go to their tag on my blog. These are character tags, so you’ll find anything from metas to fics/poetry and art in no particular order. If you are looking for something more specific, please have a look at my pinned post.
I will not pretend I wrote and posted equally for all of them (some might just have one entry), and a few are missing (I’ll add tags when applicable). But right now, I have roundabout 100 Sandman characters waiting to get explored, and existing tags will auto-update whenever something new gets added, so feel free to bookmark this post.
I tag pretty consistently (some characters have two tags because I initially didn’t 🙈), but the odd one might slip through and float around on my blog without being tagged; you can also try to use the search function on my blog.
So without further ado, here they are (and now I’ll need to lie down):
The Endless
Destiny
Death
Dream (Morpheus only | Daniel only)
Destruction
Desire
Despair
Delirium/Delight
Dream’s Lovers
(Yes, they get their own space for quick reference)

I took time to check the appearances of Garrett Sandford, the second Sandman, pre Neil Gaiman, there aren’t many but it’s fascinating because you can see how it all came together.
First off, it’s the Jack Kirby miniseries, which introduces Sandman as the guardian of dreams, his nightmares Brute and Glob, and Jed Walker as a boy with some dream stuff about him. Jed initially lives with his grandfather the lighthouse keeper but he dies in the series and goes to live with his mean aunt and uncle Clarice and Barnaby (after reading the Gaiman series that was a serious gut punch)
However this wasn’t the end for Pre-Gaiman Sandman; Jed mostly disappears, making one panel cameos (although a cancelled comic would’ve revealed he was Kamandi’s parallel universe counterpart) but Sandman comes back a few times thanks to Roy Thomas. First Thomas brings back Sandman’s enemy General Electric in Wonder Woman 295 and 296; and then he introduces Sandman himself in Wonder Woman 300, where he gives Sandman a name and a backstory, as Garret Sandford, a scientist who created a dream machine but got stuck in the Dream Dimension (aka the Dreaming) and now he can only come out for 1 hr when he blows his whistle. This issue by the way introduced Lyta Trevor later Lyta Hall, the daughter of Earth-Two Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor; I’m pretty sure it meant nothing at the time (it was part of the issue 300 celebration), but considering how central Lyta ended up being to the Sandman story can’t help but take notice
The next appearance of Garret Sandford was in Justice League of America Annual #1; this story wasn’t by Roy Thomas, but by Len Wein and Paul Levitz and it’s interesting because the League teams up with Sandman to fight Doctor Destiny, who you might know as John Dee or the guy with Dream’s ruby. I’m sure Dee would’ve tied with Dream regardless, because of his dream powers, but seeing them together years before Neil Gaiman came along is kind of amazing.
Anyway, Sandford does not actually come back after that, but Roy Thomas continues with the story of The Sadman, now in Infinity Inc. Infinity Inc started out as the story of the Next Generation of Earth-Two heroes, with the likes of Jade and Obsidian (children of Golden Age Green Lantern), Power Girl, Wildcat 2, Hourman 2, Doctor Midnight; and of course Lyta Trevor (Fury) and Hector Hall son of Golden Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl (called Silver Scarab). I don’t particularly care for the story of Infinity Inc, but the things you need to know is that they started pre-Crisis, they ended post-Crisis (so a lot of their backstory had to change) and Hector died and Lyta was pregnant with his child; in issues 49 to 51 The Sandman comes back spying on Lyta at night and Nuklon (who was in love with Lyta) finds out, and gets Lyta to help him catch him and discover that *gasp* Sandman is actually Hector! Hector reveals that the original Sandman, Garret Sandford went crazy and died (doesn’t say he committed suicide, but the implication is there) and after he (Hector) died he fell into the dream stream and ended in the Dream Dimension and became the new Sandman, but he can only be on Earth for 1 hour a day; he doesn’t want to prevent Lyta to live his life, but they’re still in love so they get married at the beginning of issue 51 and go to the Dream Dimension to have “A Happy Beginning” (so much for that). So here’s the important part about this story, it was published in early 1988, cover dates April to June 1988; issue one of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman was published in December 1988 (cover date January 1989), The Doll’s House, the storyline that dealt with the superhero Sandman and Jed Walker started publication in mid 1989; Neil Gaiman was working with current DC continuity, he was building off the work of current DC author Roy Thomas; he wasn’t digging out some forgotten character, he was working with recent stories and it’s amazing.
You can tell how all the pieces of the story Gaiman told came together and it was current; it’s freaking brilliant and I love it

I don’t hate Cully Barnaby, but I hate it when she is involved. There’s a 80% chance in every episode that she either knows the victim or the murderer and seems to have some informative stories about them while despite bringing Barnaby down when he cancels on her because someone’s literally just been murdered.
The information she gives her Dad only has a 45% chance of being genuine because it’s always from gossip.
I used to ship Cully and Troy together, but the more she’s in an episode and interacts with him (Scott or Jones.) or Barnaby, the more it’s Troy being head-over-heels and Cully being aware and still playing with his feelings while putting her Dad’s career down and making jibes about his dedication during an investigation which says a lot. Or she makes her disdain and hostility known not that anyone was eager for her opinion. And even though Barnaby looks unfazed, he probably hurts everytime, if Cully did that to Troy; chances are he’d get snarky in self-defence or he would genuinely feel guilt and try an unhealthy amount to keep her satisfied while despite doing nothing wrong, hoping to make it up to her because as much as Troy acts as though he doesn’t care for being the bad guy mostly when he speaks his mind at the wrong time, you can tell he cares deeply for Cully’s opinion more than he should. Or Barnaby probably would’ve listened to an annoyed Cully and sided with her while Joyce would name him a hypocrite.
In my opinion, Cully has made her dislike of Barnaby’s job as a DCI and she hates when he so much as brings it up or when he is involuntarily called away and guilt-tripping him about it, but she and Joyce despite their constant remarks feel entitled to drop information or ask and talk openly about an ongoing investigation case or making comments that they claim would’ve been helpful a few weeks before after they’ve just finished the case over breakfast while if he mentions it there’s the opposite outcome?
You can even tell by the books and scenes onscreen that Tom Barnaby is a devoted Father. He talks about reading to Cully as a child, he even stands with Troy or Jones and reminisces about Cully’s childhood. But Cully seems to complain more and makes it out that he was never around because of his job, Joyce likewise but she remains more neutral and understanding.
Some episodes you’d think would opt Cully into at least thinking about her privilege of having a loving Father. In “The Blood Will Out,” The episode where Hector Bridges is killed by his Stepdaughter and Barnaby uncovers that he was abusive towards her after the entire family cover it up while planning her escape, Barnaby was empathetic and sat in the interview room talking about all the things he himself would’ve done for Cully and that he also would’ve done the same thing while ensuring Fleur that he was going to do everything in his power to get her either an easy sentence or off the hook. You’d think Cully would give him a break because she ended up with one of the most decent Dad’s of Midsomer while a few she went to school with or those who are just living somewhere in Midsomer are spending life in prison because their parents were either abusive or something provoked them into it.
But my biggest pet peeve with Cully was how she didn’t even use her ability to prevent Barnaby from being a dick towards Scott when he arrived in season 7 despite in the little time he’s been there and how hostile his boss (her Dad.) is, he still ends up saving her life, he’s there for less than a week two people have been murdered, he’s had to learn his way around a place he’s never been because he was making sure his superior’s daughter was safe because Joyce was in full panic mode and Barnaby had to be at the scene of the crime.
And when Scott saw Cully was in trouble, he jumped into a lake and made sure she was okay and drove her home, again, he made sure she was alright.
She didn’t even mention it to her Dad who constantly belittled Scott in front of her, or complained about Scott’s attitude because he was late on his first day and isn’t used to the countryside because he has been switched from London after all- I’m sure if he found that Scott unlike Troy (The Previous “the Green Man” before discovering the murderer, he let Cully go with Daniel Webster despite him being present at his Mother’s murder.) saved Cully’s life while he knew he easily could have been taken down by the four people who could’ve (god knows what they were doing if they intended to drown her.) overpowered him or fought him and ambushed him.
Cully didn’t even say “Dad he saved my life and he didn’t have to do that.”
Or she could’ve at least mentioned it and let Scott’s actions speak louder to Barnaby instead of his first impression that Barnaby let linger far too long and held it against him unfairly.
It only seems when Cully receives some gratification out of being an informer that she’ll speak up and sure Scott wasn’t fazed by that nor did he hold it against her, he didn’t even expect her to tell anyone maybe even asked her to keep quiet about it, but considering he went on a complete goose chase for her, she should’ve used the ability that she definitely had to at least return a favour and at least make his new life slightly if at all (that he certainly isn’t used to.) easier and educate her Dad in Scott’s heroic action without being like Troy who probably would’ve expected a kiss on the cheek and a glass on wine (jokingly because he’s nervous of course, but he would’ve most likely made some unintentionally stupidly politically incorrect remark where he acts as though he expects acknowledgement and Cully takes it for his ego and she actually thinks he’s serious.) while reminding him that Scott IS from the Metropolitan Police in London and of course is going to be different in methods, but it just annoys me that she didn’t say anything, nor did she even so much as validate him; the toast at the end of the restaraunt “to absent friends.” felt like yet another jibe and comparison that DS Scott isn’t Troy, or Cully deliberately made that into guilt-tripping her Dad about missing Troy as in “he’s gone Dad, stop talking about him.”
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk, I’m expecting Cully will Midsomer Murder me after this.
