Whatever you are going through, know that you are not alone. Jesus goes through any storm with us. Even though we may not understand the reasons why right now, we must rely on the Holy Spirit's strength to keep us going and remain steady with Christ as our anchor in any storm. He helps us sustain us, have faith, keep steady and to trust deeply in God in times like these. God loves and cares for us so much. His Words can really remind us of all of this. 🫂❤️‍🩹✞

Line Upon Line Lesson 069: Why the Old Covenant Failed

Exodus 19:8 - Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord.

There are many Christians today who claim they are “new covenant Christians.”  They often claim the old covenant, which included the Ten Commandments,  was done away with.  They also claim the new covenant replaced the Ten Commandments with two simpler rules of love: love God and love your neighbor.  These same Christians also believe the fourth commandment of keeping the seventh-day Sabbath  no longer applies to them.  Instead, they keep Sunday in honor of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Are these claims true? What exactly are the old and new covenants? What was the difference between the two?

Let’s read together Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Hebrews 8:6-13. 

We learn from these verses that the old covenant was the covenant the children of Israel made with God at Mount Sinai. 

Let’s read together Luke 22:20; Galatians 4:21-31; and Hebrews 9:16.

The new covenant was established by Jesus Christ.  It came into effect and was ratified by His sacrifice at the cross.

Let’s read together Exodus 19:8; Exodus 20:12; Hebrews 8:6; and James 2:12.

The Bible tells us the new covenant was established on better promises.  Note that the old covenant did not fail because of anything on God’s part.  The Ten Commandments are perfect and contain good promises. 

The old covenant failed because the people did not do all that God had spoken to them to do.  Essentially, the people did not hold up their end of the contract.

God’s terms in the old and new covenant are the same - obedience to His commandments. Jesus promises to empower us to obey God’s word in the new covenant.
