Why Can't Heathlegs Get Together? (RTTE)

Why didn't Heathlegs get together? And why did we end up with that SnotRuffLegs love triangle? Simple.

Heather is not a film character. She's a character created solely for the show franchise. As such, if she's not part of the film franchise, then there's no way these two can get together.

That being said, there's another reason, two even: distance and duty.

Berserker Island and Berk are of a great distance from each other. So a long-distance relationship is meaningless, even if they used Terror Mail.

Then, of course, there's duty. Despite their love for each other, neither of them wants to leave their respective Tribes, homes, and positions in order to be together. Heather is both the sister and daughter of Chieftains, respectively. And with Dagur becoming Mala's new King, it's very likely that Heather, or another relative, will become the new Chieftain of Berserk. Regardless, she is the Vice Chieftain of Berserk, if not in training to become THE Chieftess of Berserk. As such, she can't and doesn't want to abandon her position to be with Fishlegs.

Keep in mind that, in Season 4, I think, Fishlegs gave Heather the option to stay with him, but he encouraged her to go home to Berserk, to her Tribe and family, saying this in "Gold Rush":

“You've been looking for a home since the first day I met you, Heather; and maybe this is finally your chance to find it. Just know that we will always… I will always be there for you.”

Fishlegs saw that Heather had been struggling with her identity since the loss of her adoptive parents and Tribe at the hands of Dagur and had been searching for a place to belong, and probably thought at first that the Gang — and eventually Berk — would be that for her. But once she found out about her origins, and later information about her Father — along with Dagur's plea to come home and help him rebuild the Berserker Tribe — she began to feel that returning back to her roots would be the right choice.

And it turned out to be the case.

In Fishlegs' end, perhaps if he had been more of an outcast like he had been in HTTYD 1, Riders of Berk, and even part of Defenders of Berk, then it's plausible that Fishlegs might've thought of joining Heather and becoming a Berserker.

But that didn't happen, and Fishlegs has found himself to be an irreplaceable part of Hiccup's inner circle as he (Hiccup) slowly settles into the role of the Heir of Berk, and later the Chieftain of Berk. He's also been taking part in teaching the Auxiliary Riders and the next generation about dragons and Dragon Riding.

So in the end, as much as he'd like to, he's now an essential part of Berk's new age and future administration, and thus, unfortunately, can't lift anchor and fly away happily ever after with the love of his life. He could, but he won't.

And the results? Forever separated in body, but forever bound in heart. 🥰😭

So, rare pair ask! (Even though you never asked for this) What are your thoughts on Heather/Eret? I mean I think I saw hints of them in your Dance of Power Trilogy and so I think you're at least aware of the ship?

What head canons would you give them? How did you find out of this ship?

What would you rate them from squick/nOTP to OTP?

And the most important question of all: Do you think they deserve more fanfiction?

Yes, I am aware of the ship, and I have included it in the first two books in my trilogy (so far). I know they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea and they never actually meet in canon, but I honestly always thought this ship was a good one regardless. I first stumbled across it in a fic on FFic.net forever ago. I can’t remember what the story actually was, and I don’t think I even read it all the way through as it was a little rough around the edges structure wise, but I do remember this ship standing out. It resonated enough with me that it was pretty much the ONLY thing I remember about the story. They absolutely need more fanfiction, imo! Lol

As for head canons…

Heather and Eret have such similar character personalities that it’s hard for me to not picture them together. Both of them are very able warriors with a heart of gold, who simply want to find a place they belong. They both have clearly defined baggage and difficult pasts. They both go through similar(ish) journeys as they evolve from untrustworthy enemy, to loyal ally and honorary member of the gang. Heathlegs never really made much sense to me in the long run, as they are just too different. Heathret seems to make more sense in my mind.

I see them being one of those disgusting couples that challenge each other constantly, but rarely actually fight. Unfortunately both of them seem the type to close up and run instead of communicating their feelings anytime a problem or conversation tweaks a painful nerve or memory, which is difficult for a relationship. Thankfully they are also both uniquely positioned to understand EXACTLY why the other is skulking off. I bet after any fight, one of them would probably hunt the other down and refuse to let them hide, while at the same time not forcing them to talk about it while they are both upset. Just holding them and reassuring them that they are here, and aren’t going anywhere.

I also see them coming to Astrid and Hiccup for advice, A LOT. The four of them would absolutely become ‘couples friends’ where they get together with their kids and have camping trips, and game nights, and family barbecues (something that I actually don’t really see Hiccstrid doing with Rufflegs). The four of them just click, and they compliment each other so well. I’d love to see fics of their family shenanigans as their kids grow and play and get into trouble together. I think it would be hilarious and adorable, and they would all have the most beautiful babies! OMG!

Lastly, I think Eret and Heather would be healthy for each other. Eret is a little more reserved and thoughtful, while Heather is a bit more abrupt and reactive, but they would both be fiercely protective of the other (and their kids). They would balance each other out, and could give each other the stable homes and families they so crave. Of course there would definitely be some struggles at first as they tried to figure out exactly who wore the pants in the relationship, but I believe they’d work through that eventually too.

Now you know where I stand. I’d be very interested to hear your opinions/head canons. Perhaps you could even write a short Drabble about one of those head canons… 😉 (no pressure of course, but your writing is quite beautiful so… 😛😅)

Really like Tuffcup! In the third movie it was practically canon for me if at least one sided. Even without the ship dynamic though I loved these guys interactions together. Tuff is so loyal and Hiccup is so patient. They are just really cute to see interact on screen.

Heathlegs. I hate to say it but, I really view Heather as more of a lesbian but even then. I just didn't care for this ship. I feel like she would have been better with someone else. I also just like Fishlegs with Ruffnut. Surprising I know but Rufflegs really grew on me.

All in all, didn't care for this one but I can see why they were paired. Fishlegs deserves happiness and honestly so does Heather.

Heathlegs Headcanon #12: Fishlegs is among the only males who could get near Windshear, aside from Dagur, Toothless, and Hiccup. However, Fishlegs, due to him constantly working with Heather and helping her take care of Windshear, Fishlegs is her top favorite. Though it's probably and definitely cheating since he spoils her with sea slugs. 😂

Heathlegs Headcanon #15: Heather loves how poofy Fishlegs is and how cuddly he is when they sleep together. It's like hugging a huge stuffed dragon. 🥰😘🧸

Bonus: She has to compete with Meatlug. Thankfully, Meatlug is a cooperative dragon and knows to get out of the couple's way. Just so long as Fishlegs' toes are within sleep-licking-distance, she doesn't care who's next to her master. 😂

How to Get Heathlegs Together (RTTE)

Continuing from my previous Heathlegs post (here), this post will submit various scenarios that can bring Heathlegs together while being semi-loyal to the canon.

Are you ready? Let's go!

Scenario #1: Fishlegs Has Berserker Origins

In this first scenario, Fishlegs discovers that he has a distant relative that's maternally connected to the Berserk Royalty, which explains his Berserker tendencies. This also qualifies him to go on a Quest to earn Heather's hand, if he so wishes. 💪🏻😏

Scenario #2: Fishlegs Decides to Stay on Berserker Island

What if Fishlegs wanted to stay behind with Heather to help her fulfill her dreams and goals, even if that meant leaving Berk and his friends and family? In this scenario, that's what happens. (Heather better spoil him rotten!)

Scenario #3: Heather Decides to Stay with Fishlegs and the Gang

What if Heather decided to remain with Fishlegs and the Gang instead of accepting Dagur's invitation to return to the Berserker Tribe and rebuild it?

They'll probably end up so lovey-dovey that they'll be begging them to get an island already! lol 😂

Scenario #4: Heather Never Lost Her Adoptive Parents

What if Dagur never sailed to Heather's home and annihilated her adoptive tribe and family? Basically, she'd still be living happily with them. And perhaps one day she decides to go visit her friends on Berk again, years later, and with a dragon companion, and she and Fishlegs get closer together.

Scenario #5: Heather's Adopted Parents Were Taken Hostage

Now, we know that, in Heather Report, her adoptive parents were already taken hostage. But what about in RTTE? What would happen if Dagur abducted her adoptive parents in order to bait her into following him and accept his demands?

Naturally, Fishlegs and the Gang will rescue them, Dagur's head will roll (since this wouldn't be a kids' show), and Heathlegs get closer together relationally.

Scenario #6: Heather Flees After Savage's Successful Coup

What if Savage succeeded in his coup, forcing Dagur and Heather to flee into exile? They fly to Dragon's Edge and later to Berk.

In one scenario, they just stay on Berk indefinitely. In another scenario, the Gang plans a counter-attack against Savage and ultimately defeats him.

Regardless, Heathlegs end up together.

Scenario #7: Heather Becomes an Outcast

Technically, Heather was already an Outcast when her adoptive tribe and family were wiped out by Dagur, and she became the "Rogue Rider".

In the first scenario, Berk catches up to Dagur, Heather kills Dagur, and she remains with the Gang and decides to settle down and move on.

In the second scenario, Heather is made an Outcast in Riders of Berk after Dagur makes Heather the scapegoat for their father Osvald's death, forcing her to flee. And she makes friends with the Gang, and Fishlegs in particular.

In the third scenario, Heather becomes an Outcast by the Berserkers for siding with the Dragon Riders and betraying the Berserkers' ambitions. When you think about it, it is basically Scenario #6.

Scenario #8: Snotlout Hypnotizes Heathlegs to Stay Together

Snotlout wants to support Heathlegs' love and doesn't like that they have to separate, so he decides to hypnotize them, with interesting results.

(That honestly would be hilarious to write. There are quite a few ways that this could go. 😂)

Scenario #9: Heather is a Prisoner on Outcast Island

While she was kind of a prisoner in "The Heather Report," in this scenario, she remains a prisoner instead of Alvin using her to steal the Book of Dragons. This will result in the Gang defeating Alvin and eventually saving her and her family. Due to their imprisonment, though, they remain on Berk to recover. And she befriends Fishlegs and gets closer to him.

Scenario #10: Fishlegs Grows Up as a Berserker

What happens if Fishlegs, like in the Books, is cast aside as a Runt, and finds his way to Berserker Island as a baby? Fishlegs becomes a Berserker. But will he have a chance to woo the Princess of the Berserkers (Heather)? Who knows? 🤷‍♂️

Scenario #11: Heather Lives on Berk

Similar to Scenario #9. What if Heather ended up on Berk, whether as a toddler (after Dagur sent her adrift), or if she was part of a shipwreck (like in Heather Report)? But she ends up living in Berk and grows up with the others. And Fishlegs grows up with Heather.

(And Berk has to outlaw them because their public lovey-dovey displays have become unbearable. 😂)
