Nothing to see here, just Heartstopper 🐚✨
So I just finished Heartstopper and I'm in love.
Asides from Nick and Charlie, I think what I love even more is the Paris Squad. I love how diverse and supporting the friend group is and how everyone is amazing in their own light but even better together. Although is the diversity realistic I mean in one group there's trans, gay, bi, asexual, non binary and straight. I wouldn't know I'm Nigerian. I also loved how heartwarming and adorable Nick and Charlie are, like y'all are so cute I need a season 200 rn. And I also learnt more about the Lgbtq community than I ever did in any other work of fiction. I'm off to find the books 📖

Heartstopper - When Sexuality is Set in Stone
I admit I like Heartstopper, although I guess it’s not for my age group. It’s a bit too ideal a world, with everybody being good friends, problems being solved easily, no financial distress, and young people living in a strong support system. All in all, it’s a smooth ride.
But something struck me as odd, while I was watching Season 3.
Remember the scene when Imogen tells Nick that she never liked a boy “that way” and that she only had boyfriends because she wanted to look like a cool girl?
Now of course everybody is assuming she’s a lesbian, or at least that she’s finally questioning her “heteronormative” behaviour.
On the other side we have Isaac, who has come out as asexual and aromantic. Nick, who realizes he’s bisexual. Charlie, who came out as gay before he met him. There’s non-binary Darcy. Lesbian Tara. Elle, who transitioned years earlier. Tao is heterosexual (I guess), in any case his love interest is trans.
Average heterosexual characters hardly appear, and when they do they are usually shown off as narrow-minded and difficult to deal with like Charlie’s parents. I get it that queer young people want to feel represented on screen; but to ignore them the way it was until a few years ago was as unrealistic as it is now, IMHO, to portray societies where no one falls in love with the opposite sex any more.
The absurdity is that while “heteronormative” is frowned upon, the characters are just as certain that their choice is set in stone.
It’s repeatedly said and shown that one must find out about one’s sexual orientation and desires instead of submitting to what society expects. So, heterosexuality is out, because it - allegedly - presupposes that everybody is either male or female, everybody wants love and sex, and everybody must only feel attracted to members of the opposite sex, which is seen as restrictive and biased.
Really.
The show’s characters are all around 16 years old and by now the protagonists have all come out and “found themselves”. Some of them already did before the show even started, which means at age 14 or 15. They are firmly convinced of what their respective attitude towards gender and sexuality is, and having come out, this basically means they’re convinced that this is what they are and will be for the rest of their lives.
Same for their relationships. At 16, who is in love in this show is shown as being so happy that you can’t imagine them being with anyone else for the rest of their lives.
If Nick and Charlie will always be together, Nick will never have sex with a female, but apparently, he will be "bisexual" all his life. Isaac has never been in love at age 16 and so he takes it for granted that he is not capable of romantic or erotic feelings. Elle transitioned years earlier, before her body was even fully developed. But everybody is already convinced that this is who they are and always will be.
Excuse me, it doesn't make sense. I know from experience that at 16 your love life and your identity are still pretty much a mess. I realize that this is a piece of media, but it is beloved by a large fanbase who now will naively believe that this portrayal of young people nowadays is realistic.
In former times, there seemed to be only one way to be. Now you’re expected to come out as some thing or another by the time you’re 16. A boy or a girl can’t simply not have met the right person yet or have other priorities in life: they’re either asexual or struggling with heteronormativity. Or who knows what else.
And this is not restrictive? Come on. 😊 Apparently, being queer is just as normative as being straight.
Except everybody chooses the corset they want to be in by themselves.

Imogen and Nick vs Comphet - “Heartstopper” season one
I have yet to see season 2 where I believe Imogen is in a relationship with Ben. But I think this will also apply to that season as well, if it does, I will update this !
In season one, it is so obvious that Nick and Imogen are suffering from comphet. Nick has assumed he is straight all his life. He thinks he has to be friends with those mean rugby boys and popular boys because he is a popular boy who plays a sport. He thinks he has to say yes to Imogen because he is pressured by their expectations of him being straight. People go out of their way to push crushes on Nick, claiming he has feelings for both Tara and Imogen. Solely because he is long time friends with Imogen and because him and Tara kissed years ago. Mind you, they haven't talked since !
Imogen to me was kinda boy crazy when it came to Nick. She pushes herself on him for all of season one, and it's hard to watch. She is mostly seen with guys and hangs out with them in the morning at school, while going to a whole other school. When Nick asked her why they should be together, she says because they have been friends for so long. And of course, straight people can't just be friends, especially those who have known each other for a long time.
Though I don't really think Imogen outright understood Nick's speech at the park. I think it applies to both of them.
"Heartstopper" Season one review
Tao wasn't annoying, just a realistic friend

TW: Slight mentions of self harm and depression. HEARTSTOPPER SEASON 3 SPOILERS!
Alright so I finished heartstopper season 3 and omfggggggg def the best one! It was a total rollercoaster of emotions but i feel that that´s the reason i liked it so much, cause it expresses teen years perfectly. As a person that deals with sh and depression, the way its portrated on the show its just really beautiful. Alice and the whole cast did an amazing job. Im speecheless. I got to cry and laugh within less than 1 minute, and thats how life also feels like. I really enjoyed Michael aswell!!!!!!!! I giggled everytime he appeared on screen, hes my pookie frfr. And my baby Oliver 🥹🥹🥹 The only things that i didnt like are the fact that Sarah (nicks mum) isnt there and that we didnt get to see Tori coming out to Charlie. Mostly the last thing, it was a scene that i was really looking forward to :( I also wish the episodes had been a little longer/they would have added more eps cause some things were a bit overlooked. I mean, they fitted volume 4, 5 & This winter in 8 episodes of 30 mins each. But overall I really enjoyed it. I hope that when the 6th volume comes out we can get a fourth season with the contents of it + Nick & Charlie (●'◡'●)

Heartstopper S2
I finished watching the second season of Heart Stopper in one night. There are some wonderful moments in the season, and I loved the first one, and the second season was a worthy follow up. When we began watching the season, my partner said, “They are going to break up. What else are they going to show?” That made me think. First, he was right in thinking that, because of added viewership, the…

ok i finished watching the second season of heartstopper (spoilers of comics and tv show ahead)
if u don't want spoilers but still wants my opinion for some reason: i absolutely love s2, go watch it if u haven't yet
i love how every single main character had time to be further developed and truly shine. tao and elle were amazing, tara and darcy had some of the most delicate and beautiful scenes of the show, nick and charlie were stunning as always and had amazing sequences (especially during the latter half of the season), ✨✨ ISAAC ✨✨ omg the whole sequence of him getting the ace book and the leaves flying around him made me smile for a good amount of time.
jack barton did an awesome job at making the character extremely unlikable. i'm interested in looking deeper into other stuff he's done, he seems extremely talented.
i love how nick wanted to be a supportive boyfriend in the end of the season after charlie supported him during all the events of s2, and how they didn't make nick say anything like "promise me you won't do this again" but rather he went for a "promise to tell me if things get bad again." it demonstrates how healthy their relationship is and how they truly are there for each other in any aspect. this is, by far, my favorite scene of the season.
charlie confronting ben (as he should). ok listen, i really despise ben's character. if he could get no screentime in season two, that would be awesome. BUT as much as i love the way he left the show, the scene of him standing in front of the rainbow and turning away hit me like a truck at 100 mph running over me and then going back on reverse. there's so much i could talk about it, but i will save it for a different post (if i feel like it). it might be one of my favorites because of all the details in it.
now, i must say i am afraid of season 3. i don't know if heartstopper might be renewed for an extra season, but if it's not, i don't know how all the content from volumes 5-6 will fit into it. i know alice & all of the production team behind the show will do a stunning work in making the (final?) season shine, however i am scared of what might be cut in order due to the 8 30-minute episodes format. still, i'm relieved that charlie's arc was not sacrificed, and i hope it gets the depth, relevance and care it needs.
in short: i love s1, but s2 took it to the next level for me. i'm scared, but i can't wait for s3.
#ALSO the “ur being gay good job carry on” scene is so accurate to the comics#i'm happy they kept that cuz i laughed for five minutes nonstop reading that#and guess what? the same thing happened when i watched it on netflix#heartstopper#heartstopper s2#heartstopper show#heartstopper season 2#heartstopper tv#heartstopper tv spoilers#heartstopper s2 review

Review and Spoiler - #21
Heartstopper Vol. 2 by Alice Oseman
Returning to the emotional and cute world created by Alice Oseman, the second graphic novel in the series is a gentle tale of discovering and understanding feelings.
Within this sequel, we see Charlie and Nick come out, grow closer, and gain a supportive friend group. While Vol. 1 dealt more with Charlie’s anxiety over his feelings for Nick and concerns about getting his heart broken; this version deals with Nick coming to terms with his feelings and coming out to those close to him.

I love Tao & Elle's growth - “Heartstopper” season two
After watching season two, I am proud to say that Elle and Tao are my favorite relationship. Seeing both of them grow as people and come to terms with their feelings for each other. How their friendship and romance got in the way of one another. Young complicated love is perfect for them.
With Elle taking control of education and love life, she gets into Lambert art school and gets the boy. She also looks good doing it. Her art exhibit and prom dress were so cute.
Though Tao was a good friend in Season one, this season really showed it to me. Him carrying Charlie's bag's upstairs, take pictures for the people at the museum. Boyfriend as well. Though, he tried his best to give Elle his idea of her dream date. In the end, it's him being himself that makes things work with Elle.
Most importantly, I liked how Tao wasn't afraid of admitting that he was scared. Whether it be messing things up with Elle, her going to Lambert or losing those close to him.
Season two review
Darcy's dark home life
I love Tao & his mom and her relationship with Elle

Okay so I just finished that Heartstopper show everyone was raving about awhile back and...like on a “omg this is cute and gay, I love it” scale, it’s a 9/10, but on a “this show is put together well and has a satisfying message and conclusion” it’s maybe a 7/10.
It bugged the hell out of me that Nick seemingly dropped any and all sense of being an actual person at the very end of the show, and instead just became a prop to make sure they ended the series with Charlie happy instead of borderline-suicidal. Like it sucks because they actually made Nick a good character who’s POV I liked following, but they seriously dropped the ball in the last episode.
Spoilers below:
I’m glad I finished the show before posting because I almost wrote a post about how the show kind of grossly handled Nick’s friends. Even so, they didn’t do great but it was fine. Never mind the fact that his friends are assholes, it just felt really off how easily he was dumping friends left and right, all for the sake of some boy he just met. Again, they’re assholes and he’s right to dump them, but he does it so easily that I’m like what the fuck, aren’t these your friends of like several years?? Anyways, they sort of addressed that in the end, so whatever I guess it’s fine.
But two things that bugged the hell out of me:
1. Tao’s kind of a piece of shit who sort of weaponized “love” against Charlie, and he completely gets away with it too. Charlie had a legitimate reason to not tell him about Nick, that being the fact that Nick wasn’t out yet. Sure, after telling everyone else you could argue that he should’ve told Tao too, but I still think it’s worth pointing out that there was a legitimate excuse not to tell him that was just ignored.
2. The de-characterizing of Nick in the end was insane. I mean I just went off on how they handled his friendships and how he so easily abandoned them, but then the show made a point to actually address that when Charlie outright tells him that he doesn’t expect Nick to drop all his friends, even if they are assholes, but then Nick goes and drops the rugby tournament at the very end just to make Charlie feel better??? Is Nick not allowed to be in the closet? Is he not allowed to have friends?? Is he not allowed to have personal interests and hobbies outside of Charlie??? Like what the fuck, they just completely erase his entire character just to make Charlie feel better. It’s so fucked.
Anyways, cute show I guess. Can’t wait for season two (unironically).
