The Club of Heartbreak and Hope

I would like to completely informally invite yall to my totally unofficial and barely existing club: The Club of Heartbreak and Hope. I can't decide on a mascot but our Symbol is the Ace of Spades (♠) because of Cayde-6. (While editing this post, I think I have decided that we have a council of mascots. That being comprised of Cayde-6, Noble 6, Sergeant Johnson, and I had other people but I can't remember who they were right now.) And our "advisors" are currently Sundance and Colonel. I think our anthem/theme song is legends never die. (I discovered the song around the same time I found out about Cayde's first death and the vaulting of Forsaken and it made me think of him so that song is tied to him in my brain. I will be taking suggestions for a different anthem though.)

Conditions for joining: Have a favorite character that died and left behind a sense of duty and/or a legacy to be remembered forever. They do not have to be videogame characters. Movie, show, and book characters are also welcomed. (The sense of duty and legacy is not required but is highly recommended. If you had a beloved character die, please do not let their lack of unfinished business, etc discourage you from sharing with us.) OC's may be allowed. I haven't really decided yet. I say go for it for now, if they died and broke hearts doing so.

Rules: Only supportive speech will be used. It's ok if you don't care about someone else's character as much as they do, but don't say the character sucks or anything like that.

It's kind of hard to have this club and interact with it without having spoilers. But, please label them as spoilers and what the spoiler is from. Some people like a warning before a character dies so this would be a good place to find those warnings.

This is meant to be a place to vent and nerd out over our beloved characters. Even the ones we still have alive in our delusional headcanons.

I may change the rules as necessary but it will always be in the interest of keeping it a safe and unpolluted space.

I have no idea where this club will meet but if you make a post with this idea you can use #heartbreak and hope or #club of heartbreak and hope or #the club of heartbreak and hope or something like that to make your posts more findable for people in the club. (Note: I still don't understand hashtags. If they work they work. If they don't, they don't. 🤷‍♀️)

This is an idea I've had for awhile. I just hadn't thought of putting it here. I think it's best we remain a lurker style club. Kind of moving in the shadows, not really officially meeting at all. Barely existing in known media. But, we know who we are and we see each other when the tags are used and when we choose to interact with each other. That type thing. Go and do with this idea what you will. I am excited to see what happens with this. And may your broken heart find peace and healing.

Yes, there is a Cayde-6/Legends Never Die edit. I saw that it existed but haven't been able to bring myself to watch it. I just don't think I could handle the pain. Maybe someday. Eyes up Guardians.

it's really sort of insane how much jellie meant not just to fans of scar but to fans of hermitcraft in general. she was practically a character in her own right with the way she was brought into anything scar did, running the mayor campaign, becoming a mascot of scarland... her memory lives on not just as one of the minecraft cats but in the hermitcraft world downloads and the endless fan content of her. rest easy little kitty.

Simons heart felt as heavy as his boots as he stood on your front step. He had met you before, only a handful of times, but he remembered your face well. He had been here before. Your husband Soap was always one to try and outdrink the rest of his teammates. Simon had brought his friend home in a drunken haze multiple times while he slurred about how his pretty wife would laugh at him for being so pissed. You'd always thank him with a laugh and a smile as he handed Johnny over to you. Or how you had convinced Johnny to invite the boys over for dinner after they had fought together, saving him on multiple occasions, being his family away from his family. You were a good woman and a good partner. Good for Soap. Good for Johnny. Now he was standing at your door, alone, without your Johnny. He shouldn't be there. Johnny should be walking through this door right now and scooping you up into his arms as you cried tears of happiness. He was going to shatter everything you knew and loved, and he was scared. No tears of happiness would be shed today, only tears of anguish and loneliness. The wait between his knock on the door and waiting for you to open it tore his heart apart. He knew what he had to tell you. That your husband, the man he thought of as his best friend even if he didn't show it, Johnny MacTavish, was KIA. He had rehearsed it in his head many times on the way over from the base but the beating of his heart punched it out of his skull. You opened the door with the same bright smile that he had met years prior and his mouth went dry. Every inch of him ached. But seeing him standing there, and not Soap, he watched as you broke inside. Simon didn't have to say a single word for you to know. He had lost the words anyway, he couldn't bring himself to say it. One of his scarred hands reached up to grip the dark beanie on his head, pulling it off in a sign of respect as the tears welled up in your eyes. His throat seemed to swell up and his eyes began to slowly leak. Simon wasn't one to cry but he couldn't stop as he watched you collapse onto floor.

this isn't at all meant to be condescending or finger-waggy because 100% we all have blind spots like this, but I'm really, really hoping that the people who never found Gaiman's approach to his own fandom concerning in any way will take this all as a learning moment.

he was an older, hyper-famous author engaging directly and frequently with an online audience of largely vulnerable young marginalized people. he presented himself as cultured and worldly, and made himself approachable as someone to go to for advice, encouragement and "wisdom." his manner of speech was extremely pathos-heavy and clearly intended to be comforting and encouraging in exactly the way his target demographic needed it to be to swallow every word. the way he spoke about stories and creativity was designed to make young creative hopefuls feel special and important, while sweeping real analytical techniques under the rug - in hindsight, likely so no one would think too critically about the disturbing amount of patriarchal abuse played for cheap shock value and voyerism in his own body of works.

Gaiman saw a target demographic that was desperate for an older creative role model to tell them they were worth something, and he exploited that pain to twist a narrative around himself where he was king and any critique leveled at him or his works were the enemy.

to be clear, he could have been innocent. he could totally have been just an out-of-touch old man saying nice things to people because he wanted to be kind and he thought he was a lot smarter than he really was. red flags are warning signs, not a surefire way to tell if someone is actually "secretly shitty."

but if you used to look up to him, PLEASE take this moment to revisit the ideas you absorbed from him. did you take his words to heart because they seemed to have objective merit? or did you take them to heart because it felt good to believe what he said? do you still hold these values? does knowing he was intentionally manipulating his online audience make you less certain? do you need more information from a different source before deciding one way or another?

again, I'm just really, really hoping people on here will take a moment to reevaluate the ideas and opinions he's injected into tumblr fandom culture, because his reach is immense and he has absolutely been manipulating popular perception of relevant topics to gain further influence and control the narrative around both his own and Pratchett's legacy. please, please take this moment to notice what he's been doing - and next time someone tries to pull the same shit, hopefully we'll be able to apply what we've learned from experience.

Been on my mind and I just wanna, kinda, vent about it.

I don't have a problem with Toichi Kuroba being alive. Honestly? The fact that his killers knew KID was Toichi tells me that there had to be some dealings both in costume and out. Toichi 100% strikes me as the kind of guy to attend his own murder plot, learn how it will be done, and then use it to his advantage. Makes sense; seems in-character.

What worries me about Toichi's not-death is I don't trust Gosho to write the proper reveal (if it happens at all). Because Kaito Kuroba has gone most of his life believing his father is dead. Normally, in a case like this, a character in Kaito's position might be portrayed as "Everyone says my dad is dead, but I know he's not!" But that isn't the case with Kaito. We see him mourn his father's absence, we see his outrage when he learns the truth (both when finding out about KID and the Pandora). When Kaito finds out the truth, it cannot be a simple "Hah, I figured it out awhile ago" or "I missed you so much." Kaito has been shown to angry, his life has been absolutely ruined by his father's "death," and if he ever finds that wasn't the case he will be livid.

And that's what I mean when I say "I don't trust Gosho." Because as much as I do like his character writing, and the fact he does let his characters get angry, they never get angry when there's good reason. They get frustrated, but they move on. That or they have a certain personality that allows them to forgive easily. The same cannot be said for Kaito. If Toichi is ever revealed, it is within Kaito's character to be angry. To yell and bear that grudge. It bears reminding that the current KID exists for the purpose of vengeance. Kaito took the mantle because he wanted answers, yes, but that was fueled by his own grief at not only losing his father but being lied to (having no prior info on KID before he literally stumbles into the life).

So yeah, all this to say, I do not mind the Toichi is alive aspect. I don't think it breaks the story at all because Kaito believes he is dead (and that's what is important). What I do mind is whether Gosho will treat it with the gravity it deserves. Because unlike Shinichi, who is pretty aware of his parents' shenanigans and therefore is capable of picking up their tricks, Kaito was not privy to such an upbringing. The most he knows, or at least as we're shown, is that his father was a magician. And unless we get that betrayal, unless we see Kaito realize how worthless this has all been, how worthless his grieving was, I worry.
