Lucifer laughs, and it hurts to listen to the same way the feedback from an explosion might, before he spreads a mangled wing to welcome Adam closer and begins, “Now, there was the time he fell headfirst into a black hole… or was it that I pushed him?”

favorite thing about them:

I do have to admire Siwan's dogged determination to try to be a living example of the Erdtree's light even though she falls short of the mark a lot. She grew up in Golden Catholic School and still wants to be good to everyone. Especially other Graceless souls. And her chronic case of Hero Syndrome. also her sass.

least favorite thing about them:

SHE NEVER DOES WHAT I WANT IT'S SO FRUSTRATING. I thought I would pair her with Big Boggart. Nope! She liked Varre better and now I'm never leaving editing hell. Also her terrible taste in men?

I'm hateshipping Varre/Siwan. I'm so annoyed by them (affectionate). (You would think a writer would have control over her characters and I am here to tell you we do not). I can't imagine it would last, they have vastly incompatible life goals.

ok this headcanon basically stems out of two things:

#1: i’m aroace and i like him

#2: the first time i saw rent they staged contact so that while every other main character is under the sheet simulating sex, mark is sitting alone on a chair like two feet away from the table everyone else is sitting on and he’s holding his fucking camera. good shit every production of this show should emphasize the fact that this man does NOT fuck

also. roger’s lyrics in goodbye love about mark’s loneliness and how “mark’s in love with his work” … the way that exchange culminates in “for someone who longs for a community of his own, who’s with his camera, alone?” …yeah. aroace mark cohen my beloved <3

@noworneverphantom asked for my Mark Cohen from RENT headcanons, so I am sharing as sharing is caring! I should stress that Mark Cohen is my poor wet little meow meow, thus all of these should be taken with a grain of salt roughly the size of Manhattan.

Normal content warnings for everything that happens in RENT apply, with a reminder that suicide is included with that. We're also adding both child and spousal abuse to this nightmare!

Mark has canonically a shitty relationship with his family, though Mark's relationship with his mother is better than his relationship with his father. Instead of just ARTISTIC ANGST, there was Stuff going on.

Mr. Cohen has been pretty regularly abusing his wife for their entire marriage, and started hitting Mark when he was 15 and Mrs. Cohen was in the hospital for unrelated surgery. Mark always passed it off as bullies from school as telling his mother would have just made everything Worse for both of them. There was the one time the lie was completely transparent... but Mrs. Cohen was currently seeing two Marks due to a concussion so nothing really came of it. Mark attempted to run away from home when he was 17. He did not get very far.

Fast forward to University! Things were going... okay. Sure, Mark wasn't studying anything close to his passion but both the acceptance rates at Brown ( 6% ) ( I cannot remember if Mark's university was named, but I've seen Brown so I'm just going to go with Brown ) are so low he was a very good student. Things went to shit after a class where after he learned about inter-generational cycle of abuse, Mark thought he was doomed to be monster and beat his own wife and kids, and decided he'd just end it. He got pills and drank them down with vodka. His roommate found him, and while this did save his life he got kicked out of university for his very obvious mental health issues.

Mark moved back home, were things did absolutely did not improve to when he was a teenager. He started working at the local hardware store, saved some money and to it and his camera to New York City for the weekend. He didn't really have a plan other than "not Scarsdale" but fell in love with the city on that trip. This is when he realized he could Escape, and if he could never settle down with someone, well, maybe that would be okay too. Over the next few months he saved up enough money to survive in New York City until he could find a job there, and even met some people ( Roger, Collins ) who Mark became friends with and eventually offered a space for him to crash until he got onto his feet. Spoiler: Mark did never actually move out but he paid RENT consistently and became a fixture in the constant churning over of roommates. He even found a job! The pay was terrible and barely covered RENT, food, and film but it did so. I've JUST about gotten to "six months pre-canon" here, but I'm going to stop for the night as I have a Very Early start tomorrow at work and it's time to wind down and CAPSLOCKING about fandom is not winding down.

Mark likes hot cocoa a lot, makes him feel warm and reminds him of better days. 

Rhys is a smoothie guy, if they have it, but if he wants something warm he’ll go for a big green tea.

Mark loved Where the Sidewalk Ends and The Giving Tree. Something about Shel Silverstein books made him happy as a kid. 

Gen loves cats, like, so much. His favorite childhood book series were Varjak Paw and Warriors.

Headcanons about Mark and Joanne’s friendship?

Okay I fucking LOVE Mark and Joanne’s friendship, and the way it progresses through the show from Tango: Maureen to Happy New Year. SO:

-Joanne is an only child and Mark is a younger sibling, but they both felt pressure from their parents to succeed and often bond over that.

-Joanne is a closet nerd. Mark is an open nerd. Mark found this out when he made a reference to an obscure, fanmade Star Trek film from the 70s and Joanne laughed because SHE KNEW WHAT IT WAS. From then on they talk about more and more obscure nerd things until none of their friends can understand them.

-Once Maureen and Joanne’s relationship gets better, Mark and Joanne often talk about the things they actually LIKE about Maureen. Joanne explains how she fell in love with her, and how she didn’t really feel like she had a place in the queer/LGBTQ+ community until she met Maureen. Mostly, Maureen just didn’t give a fuck, and that helped. Also Maureen having other queer friends.

-Mark rambles a lot. This is always true, but Joanne in particular doesn’t mind and she’ll listen to every single thing he has to say. When he interrupts himself he’ll be like “wait where was I going with this” and she will say something from FIVE SENTENCES AGO. Mark loves that she actually knows. Not that his other friends don’t listen, but Joanne can remember what he said more easily.

-Since Scarsdale and Pound Ridge are both in Westchester, Mark and Joanne can also relate to being from the same general area. Mark tells Joanne about when he’s visited White Plains to see relatives and Joanne then says “oh, once I went there and saw this really scrawny pale kid, was that you?” (It probably was.)

-They are just super good friends and everyone is kind of shocked by it. Except Roger. Because of Mark, he also ends up becoming good friends with Joanne.

I need a new adaptation of RENT and here's why

It's that time of year and lately I've been reminiscing on 2019's RENT: Live from Fox (as you do) and its made me want a remake a la Spring Awakening. Yes, the one directed by the awesome Michael Arden. Something about seeing Roger in a wheelchair made so much sense to me and what it could add to the story. 

Okay, take in the context of RENT itself. 

The musical takes place at the turn of the century where the crisis of HIV/AIDS is very present. One of our main characters is Roger who at the beginning of the musical is very moody and angry at the world leaving us, the audience, think that its because of a failed music career. 

The fact that he's HIV positive is later revealed as a surprise in the closing of the first act. Even if he has AIDS, his condition never progresses. Here's where that image of Roger in a wheelchair comes in. 

My suggestion to this remake: advance his condition. Keep the same dialogue. Just show the progression. Let the audience feel more of the weight of the HIV/AIDS crisis.

After Angel's death Collins breaks everybody's hearts as he sings his final goodbye. Everyone is there, except Roger. The revival could show Roger's continued frustration.. and declining health. Giving him scenes in a wheelchair, making the audience think he's the one next to die (the fault in our stars style). 

He can still go to Santa Fe (what is with New Yorker's and Santa Fe? (Newsies ref? no? anyone? I'll see myself out)) making the fight he has with Mark feel more poignant. He's not only running from Mimi's frailness. But himself.  They sing "What You Own" and we're back at the apartment. That's when we reconnect with the rest of the cast who find Mimi already succumbing to her illnesses and then he has his "No day but today" moment and thus the musical has this added depth to the imminent threat of the times.

Or just make it wheelchair accessible. Its a musical about celebrating all that makes us human with one of the most diverse cast of characters, so why not?
