Inklings Challenge 2024! My first story idea also went north out of the farthest sight so this is what we're going with. All dialogue (technically) so a lot of what I meant to put in is slightly off-screen. I think I do want to continue this though. @inklings-challenge
You asked for a tale and you’ll get one, don’t worry. Quiet now, this one’s true. There were once three brothers who lived in a bright kingdom down south. They were all moderately happy.
The eldest and most skilled with a sword longed for adventure in the north, where the kingdom used to stretch long ago. His gift was far-sight. On cloudy days he looked out east, south, west, north, and told stories of distant peoples to entertain his younger brothers.
The middle brother was the most practical of the three. His gift was swimming, as glad and airless as a fish. The whole family discovered that when he was three and the river was swollen, after much panic. His dream was to join the fleet of ships that patrolled the kingdom’s southern seas.
“---But he joined the pirates instead, and reformed the island blockade!”
What’s all this about pirates, all of a sudden? The royal navy fights the pirates, son, they don’t join them. That’d be counter-productive. Don’t interrupt the story.
The youngest, the quickest, hadn’t yet decided what he wanted to do. He had time, for his own gift had not yet become apparent.
In due time the eldest brother came of age and went off to seek his fortune. Northward, of course, as he’d always wanted. The lands were wide and empty to the north, save for small towns full of insular people and stretches of jagged mountains that the royal geologist had a personal grudge against.
He went past those mountains. Past the brown hills he found beyond them. Looking north, he saw clouds of mist obscuring the furthest stretched of his sight. In the company of a band of scouts he passed out of knowledge of homeland and family, and ceased to be heard of.
Years passed. The younger two brothers grew up and left the house, seeking their fortune afar. Rumors of war in the north grew louder. The king called his council to advise him on the matter, but what they discussed was not known in the kingdom, and the youngest brother chafed at the ignorance. The north had always held a mystery for him--- that of his brother’s death. They all assumed he was dead by now: a fairly intelligent assessment.
At last ten winters were gone by and the youngest brother was as grown as he was ever going to be. He decided he would go north himself, to discover what had the royal advisers in such disagreement, and also a hint of what had happened to the eldest.
He set out in autumn---
“But Papa, the middle brother! Did he go sailing? Did he fight the pirates?”
I don’t know if he ever went sailing, son. I suppose he might’ve found pirates but that’s not what this story is about yet.
“It’s your story, how can you not know?”
Yes, it’s my story, and it’s still being told. Shh and let me finish.
Just north of the capital the youngest brother found a caravan under attack, and helped fight off the mercenaries in return for information and dinner. He tracked the men who hired the bandits to a research town on the edge of the great forest, where he heard tell of a dragon set up in the mountains blocking his path. I can’t see the dragon, which mean it probably can’t see us, but there’s enough sources to look credible enough.
He’s trying to go around it now. If he gets across the moor--- and if that dragon doesn’t see him--- he might make it.
“But you said nobody’s got over the wall for ten years!”
Not since I did it, no. But my brothers... they’re another kind of stubborn. Your uncle’s coming, lad, and when he does we’ll be ready.

i'm about halfway through the live action one piece, and after the first episode it does get better, or i got more willing to accept the writing. it has it's charms for sure, i really enjoyed kaya being more included (do i ship nami x kaya now??) but hhhh
the writing is lacking. i hate to say this because i know it's supposed to be "inspired by" and not a 1:1 recreation, but it feels like there was a solid misunderstanding of what makes one piece work as a character piece by the writers.
zoro suffers so much from this. gone is the goofy idiot who would join a criminal organisation if he could be the boss, and in his place, is a character that you could find in any show. stoic, badass because the writers say he is, kind of just there, strong and not much else. there's implied depth, but even that is misunderstood. why was his grand epiphany and reveal of his back story him climbing out of a well?
shuffling the order of events is fine but him having any reason to help luffy and nami in episode one? yeah, he's a good person but there is a severe lack of chemistry or payoff from an earlier scene. luffy releases him but compared to the manga and anime (which is inevitable) that's kind of it? not to mention the fact that he was tied up for like... 5 minutes? before luffy released him.
and it seems like the "[nami] is the cool older sister who is tired of her little siblings' bullshit" line......... feels more and more like that's the direction the writers may take the show. which again, feels like a critical misunderstanding of nami and what makes her work. it feels fine now, whilst she's not fully with the crew, but i don't exactly have high hopes that she'll change after arlong park. especially since her arc seems to have already started? her hatred of pirates is stated but by god it is not shown at any point.
pleeeeeeeease let her yell and snort and boss the others around and be annoying please. just some semblance that her character is in-tact and not being misinterpreted / re-written to follow zoro in the way of becoming more standard to what happens in other shounen, other series. this calm, collected, older sister figure, who is ultimately relegated to.... keeping the boys in-line. nami is better than that please don't do her that disservice.

do you guys ever think about how Wyll is introduced as an archetypal fantasy hero, but then it turns out he’s a warlock, who made a pact with a devil. Do you ever think about how Ansur is described as this fantastical dragon of myth, but then when you find him, he’s turned into an undead monstrosity. Do you think about how when Wyll does the right thing, he is punished to become more monstrous. Do you think about how as Wyll’s warlock powers grow, his spells get more horrific. Do you think about how Ansur was killed by his closest friend. Do think about how Wyll was cast out by the most important person in his life. do you guys ever think about Ansur and Wyll.

After 30 years of searching for his lost brother through demonic rituals and summonings, Ford has become a bit of a notorious demon collector over the years. He's made a LOT of deals with MANY different demons over the years; from minor and harmless little entities to big and powerful overlords. Most of the time, these deals aren't really a one-way situation, so a lot of demons have a strong grip on him just as much as he does on them. It often ends up being a mutual sort of destruction, as in: "I know I'm but a mere mortal trifling with things I couldn't begin to fathom, and I know you will destroy me eventually; but I don't care as long as I get to destroy you too." He just needs to live long enough to find his brother.
The red hands are essentially pieces of himself (his soul, you could say??) that he wields as his method of restraint to the demons he has "tamed" so far. They act as a leash to contain each demons' powers, and he can loosen or tighten his hold on them as much as he wants. The number of hands required to contain a demon really depends on their individual strengths, but 3-4 hands are already very energy consuming.
YES, I gave all of his demons stupid names. SUE ME.

Still thinking about Gortash’s coronation and how smoothly he cuts a Durge off from their companions (and wishing we had a follow up with that)
The first words out of his mouth are that he cares about them- anybody else who remembers Durge has only distain for them, but not him- he’s happy to see them, he missed them, they’re his favorite assassin and he’s only glad to see them alive
And then he takes it a step further by providing insight into their past, something Ketheric refused to do for them- and Gortash isn’t dumb. He knows exactly how Durge’s companions will react, knows that he’s effectively outing Durge when he so easily could have pulled them to the side instead
And when their companions snap at them and refuse to look at them, Gortash is still smiling. Suddenly, he’s the nicest person in the room. Suddenly, everything is unstable and dangerous- but he likes you. He’s sitting there with open arms while the companions are rightfully so mad with Durge, but Gortash is more than happy to resume their alliance
He’s more than happy to be their sole source of comfort again, and isn’t he just so sweet for that?
