in the realm of like, rich kid problems, I want to someday read/write a fic where Nightwing is slowly establishing himself as a full-fledged JL member and everyone is relieved because finally, there's a nice Bat on the Watchtower who doesn't just shoot down their plans and deny their mission requests. but. while Nightwing is kind, and polite, and charming in all the ways the Bat isn't, he's still Dick Grayson. and Dick Grayson grew up as a very rich kid's suddenly very rich kid, which is to say while Bruce might not take it personally, Dick has been fending off people almost his entire life who were trying to use him for his Dad's money. which is to say, I think once Nightwing is on board and the relationship between him and Batman is at least somewhat well-known, there is suddenly a rush of younger, less-experienced members trying to take advantage of Nightwing, mistaking that kindness and openness for willingness to either voluntarily, or involuntarily, infringe upon and cross Batman's clear-cut boundaries. bribing Dick for a better monitor shift with Batman is one thing (it doesn't really work, Dick can't bribe Bruce with much as it is) but trying to convince Nightwing to lie to Batman? to go against him? his dad? the man who pulled him up when he had nothing and gave him meaning again? that man?? and then comes the inevitable, chilling realization, that while Nightwing might wear a different mask, might wear an open smile on the Watchtower and with friends off-shift, there are some lines he won't cross, same as Bruce. he won't, sure as the sun rises and the rot rolls off the Gotham Harbor in the morning.

Danny was really excited to spend the summer with his second cousin(?) he didn't really remember, but apparently Jack Fenton's cousin was Gotham billionaire Bruce Wayne, a serial adopter.

Jazz had discovered the connection and gave him a call to see if he'd mind Danny staying over for summer because Danny decided he was going to tell his parents at the end of summer about his ghost problem, and Jazz wanted him to have a safety net.

He didn't really have a big family at home, with his parents being largely... absent and Jazz moving to Gotham for college. It would be great to be in a house that wasn't empty again.

Now if only his newly discovered family could stay awake long enough for Danny to talk to them.

"So how's living with our cousins?" Jazz asked him through his Fenton-phone. He flopped onto his bed and groaned.

"They're all seem nice but I haven't really seen enough of them to know yet."

"Danny, you've already been there a week, shouldn't you know them at least a little bit? You usually warm up to people quickly, as long as they aren't trying to kill you."

"Man I kinda wish they were out to get me, then I'd probably see more of them than I have already."

"..."

"..."

"Okay Danny walk me through our family, and what you know so far about them."

"Well first there's Dick, he apparently lives in Bludhaven and supposedly comes back to Gotham to visit fairly often, haven't seen any of him yet though."

"Then there's Jason, I've seen him come over after dinner a couple of times, but he's seemed in a really bad mood and I'm getting weird vibes from him so I haven't talked to him much yet either."

"Cass, Steph, Tim, Damian, and Bruce are the ones that actually live here at the manor and outside of when I first arrived I haven't actually seen them awake enough to talk to me. Anytime I've caught a glimpse of them they're taking naps and I'd feel bad waking them up, Tim especially (he looks like he needs the rest)."

"What are they, nocturnal or something?

"That's what I thought too! But the Manor is even more dead during the night than the day. If I had wanted to live with a bunch of zombies I'd have spent summer in the zone, not come all the way here."

"The only people that have stayed awake long enough for me to actually get to know them are Duke and Alfred! Duke's great, but he seems to have a day job so I only see him for breakfast and dinner and any time I can catch him before he sleeps after. Alfred's amazing, but he already has so much to do around the Manor, I feel bad bothering him."

"It is only the first week you're there, and there was a huge Arkham breakout your first day so everybody around Gotham is a bit tense while the Bats are trying to recatch everyone. Could you give it another week for me? See if it'll be an option for if our parents react badly?"

"For you, Jazz, I'll give it another week, but I can't just trade one empty house for another."

"Thanks, little brother."

"Love you, Jazz, bye."

Danny hung up the phone and sighed, he new there was something off with his cousins, but he couldn't quite place it. Constantly napping, disappearing during the nights, but always on guard when they were awake.

He had a week to figure it out, but if he didn't there'd be no real lost love. He'd come up with some excuse, stay with Jazz for the summer or something. If his parents reacted badly and he didn't have this safety net, it'd be difficult sure, but Danny and Jazz would figure it out.

Danny thought it would be nice to have some other family that had his back for once, but hey, maybe he just had shitty luck when it came to blood relations.

[1] What first impression do they typically make? Are they likeable from the get go, or take time to grow on people?

Okay first - I really appreciate mutuals playing this game with me. Because it's not even stuff I've asked myself about my characters!

Viedyn- most would find him sociable or even charismatic, but guarded. "Likeable" is a strong word for an evil aligned Drow. But yes, I imagine if Viedyn saw a benefit in it, he'd come across as very likeable.

He's accustomed to having to placate people above him. Especially his Matron and her sisters. He's adept at reading people and masking his true feelings. This means that he can appear charming even when he's seething inside, which makes him a dangerous person to cross.

Durafein - Standoffish and a bit skittish. A few courtiers resorted to literally ambushing him because he's elusive. He's definitely not making fast friends.

What's interesting about Durafein, though, is he DOES grow on people. It takes him a long time to relax around anyone new. But eventually, as long as the person hasn't given him reason to be guarded or suspicious, he'll start to open up. He'll begin to do "normal" things like banter and eat/drink with others. He won't SEEK company but if someone he considers "safe" asks or just happens to be there he won't turn them away. When he gets comfortable enough that he enjoys being around someone, he becomes protective of them in the way that a guard dog is protective. So he may not necessarily CARE about your problems - but he'll enthusiastically eliminate the source for you.

This is not a theory, nor is this something I think will ever happen--I just drew this because I had the idea of "what if Ralsei fused with a soul (human or monster; for human, maybe it'd be our vessel?) and was able to enter the Light World, or maybe the barrier between the two worlds broke because Kris did smth (I'm going with the "Kris is the knight" theory for this one);;;

Either way, I was just fooling around and drawing a fused Ralsei...

...And then just chock it up to being a dream Kris had after Asriel finally info-dumped his ideas about the game he was making;;; (Kris and Susie are sleeping over in the Dark World for a day after the events of Deltarune end in the best way possible, and then Kris gets a weird dream;;;)

So fun fact that related to Ford's fun socks/statement pieces for outfits: many biotech companies or companies that provide supplies for research labs often give free gifts of socks/T-shirts/other clothing items that have cartoons or designs related to what they sell.

For example, I went to a cell bio conference recently, and one of the vendors there that my lab buys from often gave me a pair of socks with cartoon phospholipids and proteins on them (they are my new favorite socks and I love them dearly)

My favorite ones are from Thermofisher Scientific, they have awesome holiday merch every year. One of the postdocs in the lab has like 5 different holiday longsleeve shirts from them, one of which has a pattern of lab glassware strung up like Christmas lights!

I hc that Ford likes to use nerdy science clothes like these as his little outfit flairs, like wearing a science related T-shirt as an undershirt under a sweater or button-up, or fun socks with shit like antibodies or ball-and-stick molecule models dotted all over. I mean, he had to have gotten his lab equipment and resources from SOMEWHERE, and if he was buying it all with grant money he's bound to have gotten a freebie every once in a while!

(Side fun fact, one company we buy from, I think it's a microscope parts supplier?? Anyways, they send snack boxes with orders with things like candy or granola bars, I freaking love it when we order from them, those snacks RULE!)

I love this so so much, there are tears streaming down my face dude this is SO cute. He definitely keeps stuff like this. Even better if the shirts and stuff have awful science puns on them, too.

He'll wear the shirts over his turtleneck under-armour stuff when he goes casual, or the snazzy socks under his boring day-to-day outfits. Maybe he'll wear his favourite pair with a particular suit for a conference or something? Just a little peek of personality underneath the formality.

LMAO he's got a cupboard in the lab filled with like 4,000 branded stress balls from some major sponsor company that he never uses (though he ought to).

Seriously though, this is so fucking cute and being a scientist sounds rad as hell if you're getting all this cool shit. Especially snacks!

I have questions about that last fic. How did the prisoners alter their uniforms, and what were the consequences? What did they throw at Es? What did they trick Fuuta into eating and how? How did they try to catch Jackalope?

LMAO murder aside these ten know how to cause problems on purpose 😭 Hehe thank you for your curiosity, I genuinely had visualized some specifics for these while writing >:3 So --

Mahiru started sewing patches and ribbons and things onto her uniform dress. She got very bold very quickly, though, completely replacing whole sections with colorful fabric (like swapping out the entire skirt/bodice/sleeves) so it was pretty obvious. Es replaced all her uniforms with the standard ones and limited her requests to only small amounts of fabric at a time. (Who’s to say she isn’t secreting these away to patch together later, though…)

I was influenced by seeing two “what are the limits of Milgram’s no-violence policy, really” posts very recently. I think if the object could cause absolutely no harm, it’s possible to hit Es with it. I’m thinking basic crumpled paper or even a lightweight food -- something harmless but very sticky and gets in their hair… either way Es is Not Pleased. I feel like this could have been anyone except Haruka and Mahiru, as even the more "mature" prisoners would just be curious about what would happen.

My original thought was cake, but now that I’m fact checking I see that it grows mold pretty quickly… So maybe pudding: the eggs and milk spoil a bit before you see actual mold. Whoever has decided to be a menace (my guess is Yuno or Mikoto) puts up a whole farce about food preferences and whether or not they can identify specific flavors in this special dessert Jackalope secreted away, and unfortunately Fuuta is a hungry boy and it’s not very difficult to get him to take a big bite 😔

Jackalope lounges around the prison, chilling with the prisoners and taking naps in whatever place he finds comfortable. They try sneaking up to where he’s settled in, distracting him with treats and gentle words to see how long they can keep him in place as they give him gradually more noticeable pets. Muu has coaxed him into enough peace to take off his hat and pet his head, but no one’s managed to give him little scritches before he tries to regain his dignity and scurries away. Little do they know, he forces Es to scratch, pet, brush, and cuddle him every single night under the pretense of their official duties.

before I say anything about Aventurine, please keep in mind I've only met him for a bit! (he just gave us his room and had a talk with Dr. Ratio) idk anything about his backstory and I'm sure my feelings about him will change but this is just based off of my initial observations and thoughts c:

I can totally see how some aspects of Aventurine is similar to Childe! however, Childe was suspicious but charming to me when we first meet him with the whole "hey girlie, hold still!" and him helping us escape the Millelith. he also is pretty straightforward about his allegiance, but it helped that he said he doesn't like Signora (and I absolutely DETESTED her after what happened in Mondstadt with Venti).

my initial impression of Aventurine leans more into the suspicious and slimy side because he shows up and complains about us wasting his time by holding up the line. similarly to Childe, he immediately tells us who he is affiliated with (I'm ngl I barely remember what the IPC is...) but he acts very high and mighty and flaunts his money. the interactions with him feel very transactional; he clearly has a goal and will use anyone and do anything to help him reach it, but it seems like he's been backed into a corner and is all the more dangerous for it. he just doesn't have any friends and doesn't seem to have as much...charisma? people skills?

the conversation he has with Dr. Ratio makes me understand him a bit more but he still feels very slimy and suspicious haha. he grew up without parents, right?? because it feels like he has no social skills or is just taught that "friends" are pawns for him to use. he doesn't have to worry about making actual connections or making them like him; they just have to like his money. and if he has no family and no friends, it really feels like he has nothing to lose besides his life—which again makes him very dangerous.

Childe on the other hand, has family he cares about, has people who love him, and people he loves. I think that has allowed him to have better people skills haha >.< he doesn't rub me the wrong way like how Aventurine did when we first meet him.

(also!! I must say switching Aventurine from English to Chinese makes it a bit better—I think the voice acting of the English feels a bit unnatural..? or just makes him even more slimy HAHA)

BUT since you (and a couple of moots) say Aventurine gets better the more you get to know him, I look forward to seeing where the story goes! I think I can grow to appreciate him as a character >u< but as of now I can't see myself like-liking him even if he has some similarities to Childe!

...at least at Chen Liwei's school, anyway. Qi Mingtao is certainly more well-off than Chen Liwei, but let's face it: it's not hard to be more well-off than Chen Liwei. Like you said, he's cannon fodder. He's not particularly special, and I didn't really mean him to be. He's either 1) wealthier than anyone at the school, but like, still small fry 2) has a relative that's in a position of power at the school itself, like an uncle who's a superintendent or something. Either of these ensures that he's got people following around doing what he tells them.

It's not impossible for him to advance into the adult stage of the novel. People grow up. People need jobs. Low-to-middle-ranking corporate flunky seems appropriate.

Bullying Chen Liwei at work... well, however that turns out that will depend what kind of bullying we're talking about. If it's just some mean remarks and minor favors, whatever. Chen Liwei could probably deal with that himself without too much of an issue. But if it's anything ruining Chen Liwei's career, life, livelihood, etc?

At a certain stage, this will become a very bad idea, because Wu Youxuan will kill you.
