Part two of this, so if you want more context on this analysis, please read the first part!
In part one I went over the struggles of SpongeBob’s desire to fit in and how he falls into this perfectionist nature. And because of this, he also falls into being a people pleaser A LOT. Where he’ll put the needs of others (mostly his friends) before his own. He also gets tricked and manipulated constantly by folks for their own personal gain and selfish reasons. Not to say SpongeBob doesn’t have any himself, but he tends to put his own on the back burner in order to please his friends. Again, he’s a people pleaser, he wants everyone to like him. The episode “Not Normal” is another example of him worrying he’s not normal enough and changes his personality and appearance because he thinks he’ll be better. He also worries what his own parents think of him, even though his parents don’t mind his energetic nature and childlike wonder.
Once again trying to prove himself to people. But the question still stands, will he ever “grow up” and “be mature”?
Well, that’s where Coraline (my self insert) comes in.
Coraline is a sea monster. Her species is well known for being scary and dangerous. But she’s not. She’s an outcast. Spending her entire youth bullied by other sea monsters due to being seen as “sensitive” and “weak”. And once old enough, she leaves her trench. Going from town to town trying to find a place to call home, before finding herself in Bikini Bottom and ends up working for Plankton because no one else will hire her. Already sealing her fate of crossing paths with SpongeBob. And once the two do meet, SpongeBob of course wants to befriend her, offering to show her around because he wants to make a good impression. But due to Mr. Krabs threatening him when they find out she works for Plankton, the sponge once again puts others before his own needs, causing Coraline to get stood up by him. And then SpongeBob ends up having to apologize later on.
[More context of this in the first two chapters of the fanfic about them here!]
Eventually he forms a friendship with the sea monster, almost in secret from his own boss.
Right away the two hit it off, discovering that they share a few similar hobbies and interests. But the two also start to notice that they share the same struggles as well. People pleasing. SpongeBob does it to avoid being alone, while Coraline does it to not be seen as a threat. Unlike SpongeBob, Coraline accepts her loneliness, purposefully avoiding folks and will sometimes deny the sponge’s offers in fear of scaring him off, but because she wants to keep peace, she keeps accepting them.
But SpongeBob is scared. Not because Coraline is scary. He’s afraid of being tricked and disappointing his boss. With Mr. Krabs filling his head with the idea that Plankton is using Coraline to get to him to get to the secret formula, SpongeBob starts to get paranoid. While Coraline on the other hand feels trapped because she has to do what Plankton tells her or else she loses her job. But because she’s honest, she’ll let SpongeBob in on the plans, allowing the two to be one step ahead of their bosses to avoiding any conflict between them. The two then start to make a game out of it, sneaking around and being very tongue in cheek whenever they have to “confront” each other during work hours. But once the two starts to catch feelings for each other, it gets messy really fast.
Coraline believes she’s a mistake. Believes every time SpongeBob is nice to her is out of either pity or as a joke. She wants to avoid him but can’t, SpongeBob is stubborn, but so is she, so it’s a constant push and pull between the two. SpongeBob genuinely enjoys her company. He never met anyone who treated him gently before and he doesn’t want to mess up whatever they have going between them because he’s afraid he won’t find it again.
Skipping forward to them dating. For another analysis post on the whole thing about SpongeBob and dating can be found here!
Neither have any dating experiences. The only time SpongeBob had form “relationships” was with a boat, a spatula and a krabby patty.
With “Spatula” he had to get a replacement in order to continue his work and the episode is kinda treated like a “cheating” allegory in a way that SpongeBob chose his work before the spatula, later in tears asking “Spatula” for forgiveness. Again we could see this as an internal battle SpongeBob most likely have that he himself worries about being replaced and sorta acts the scenario out. I know this (and the other episodes) is played for laughs, but I’m making this deeper than it should because I like him to have depth dammit!
“Boatie” comes from SpongeBob’s loneliness of everyone leaving town and once again starts to believe the boat has it out for him while he talks to a puppet of Patrick, again most likely acting out a scenario he most likely fears will happen to him one day. I could also go on about the whole “National No Spongebob Day” subplot at the end of that episode, but that would end up being a rant…
Heck even Bubble Buddy plays into this since SpongeBob created him out of loneliness due to all his friends being busy (before it’s revealed that the bubble is alive).
And then there’s “Patty”. He becomes infatuated with a krabby patty and I think the little teasing comments from Squidward about it triggered the attachment into an obsession from SpongeBob. Because if we once again go by the one comment in the episode “The Chaperone” where he never had a date to prom, it’s most likely he never dated in general.
He wants to feel wanted, but doesn’t know how to get it without it backfiring.
Once getting closer to SpongeBob, Coraline catches on right away that SpongeBob goes to desperate measures to make her happy, which makes her uncomfortable. To her SpongeBob is more mature in her eyes since he has more life experiences than her and she’s the only one who treats him with respect because of it, so once noticing his people pleasing nature, she tries to step in out of concern. Because he doesn’t need to change for her, she already accepts him as is. Which of course throws SpongeBob out of loop because this is what he always does, he has to help others however he can, and he recognizes Coraline’s struggles and wants to help her too. Eventually the pair starts to get frustrated by each other due to this, not realizing that they are both not only forcing themselves out of their comfort zones, but also growing as people from their impact on one another. Causing them both for the first time in their lives to “grow up” and accept being different.

psa that the day there are no jgy stans left on tumblr dot com is the day i am dead
but rest assured i'll go to my grave exactly as i lived: obnoxiously proclaiming to everyone within earshot how great lianfang-zun is. narratively, metaphorically, spiritually. sexually, too, like why limit myself. i like to keep my options open
#the spirit of su minshan possessed me for a minute there but like. i'm fine with it#jin guangyao#he did crimes??? good for him 😌#editing this post to add that while the tone here is clearly joking#i really am fundamentally still engaged with this fandom#and with this book#almost exlcusively because of my enjoyment of jgy#even xiyao is secondary for me like i love it and i'm ride or die for it obvs#but jgy as a character is the main draw for me. and he would have me by the throat even if there was no zewu-jun#(tho i think jgy's life would be more depressing for his absence obviously)#but he is just. /clenches my fists!!!#THE most compelling character in the story and i cannot stop thinking about him!! cannot will not!!#who else in this book has his range? who else can be the doe-eyed idealist AND the spy with blood on his hands who ends a war?#who else is two different greek tragedies and at least two separate shakespearean tragedies rolled into one antagonist#an antagonist who but for the POV of the novel could very easily have been the protagonist#whose moral event horizon is so deeply entwined with his own trauma and abuse that there is no way to meaningfully separate#the violence he does to others from the systemic violence that was done to him for his whole life?#who else in this book manages to get five separate sect leaders utterly obsessed with him no matter how you choose#to interpret that obsession?#no one!!! that's who!!#ain't no one else in the jianghu doing it like lianfang-zun and that's just a goddamn fact

just read this article where the author argues that when ajax is crying out in his tent he is crying out solely for teucer (not eurysaces, as tecmessa suggests to the chorus) and it is everything to me now.
the idea that - in this moment of incredible emotional vulnerability - when ajax cries out, ἰὼ παῖ παῖ, he is not looking for his son but his brother? that his specific call for teucer - Τεῦκρον καλῶ. που Τεῦκρος; - is an elaborated cry for help?
fantastic. show-stopping. incredible. it's all i'm going to be thinking about now and forever.
#i found the argument itself quite compelling because παῖ does not necessarily refer only to children but is also used by siblings sometimes#the author also notes that tecmessa and ajax are almost constantly out of sync throughout the play Unless you see this scene#as ajax referring to eurysaces. in which case he suddenly harmonizes them for a second when otherwise they just talk in circles#also some great points made re: the skēnē and communication between on-stage/off-stage in greek tragedy#idk i just love it. it compels me deeply. ajax knows his brother is still away but he cries out for him anyways#truly the brothers of all time!!! no one does it like them!!!#teucer#telamonian ajax#sophocles' ajax#tagamemnon#edit: changed the link to one without a paywall

"the fault, dear Brutus -" (Julius Caesar)
Quotes from A Critical History of English Literature by David Daiches. Panels from Death in the Family, Under the Red Hood, Lost Days, and Batman and Robin.
#OKAY SO i have been thinking about the hamlet post since i reblogged it the other day so i had to find panels to fit it#anyway i don't post about him much BUT#i do find jason fascinating both in terms of the Nonstop Emotional Intensity but also because on a narrative level#this is hard to articulate and possibly you need access to my dartboard of string in order to understand but#at some moments it's almost structurally as if you took the hero of a classic tragedy#and you put him in a story where he's the villain#it's like. what if hamlet but the story was told from the point of view of laertes#what if antigone but our pov character was ismene#you take the epic greek tragedy-esque stage and the tragic dramatic hero outraged at a terrible crime and the pile of bodies#and like. all of that is still true!! he really did get murdered!! it was really bad!! it's legit that he is mad about it!!#but then you frame it all from the perspective of the people going#'you just killed my dad and drove my sister to suicide you jackass'#and!!! they're not wrong either!!#and just ahhhh the way you can do that perspective-flip is just endlessly fascinating to me#web weaving#my comic art but we are using the term ''art'' loosely

The Netflix show Kaos just rewired my brain chemistry.
First of all, fuck Zeus. That fucker killed a kitten, a baby, and who-the-fuck-knows who else. I will never forgive him.
Secondly, Dionysus as an immature fratboy is everything that I never knew I needed.
Hera is awful and deserves every bit of shit that Zeus gives her, but we already knew that.
Persephone was ✨ SLAYING ✨ from start to finish, her and Hades have my whole heart.
Prometheus genuinely had me snorting here and there, I loved him.
Fuck all the way off, Poseidon.
The fact that the entire rest of the pantheon fails to appear at all purely because they make a hobby out of avoiding Zeus at any cost might be the funniest fucking thing ever to come out of an interpretation of Greek mythology.
Riddy (Eurydice) and Orpheus are both such great characters, alone and as a complicated relationship thing. They're super well rounded and developed, both mean well, but they're so humanly written. They don't know what to do with each other, neither wants to hurt the other, but their decisions are flawed and their love has turned into such a messy situationship. It's beautiful when they finally communicate and accept the circumstances for what they are.
A healthy breakup, in my Greek mythology media?
It's more likely than you think!
Canaeus, my beloved.
Cassandra, my scruffier beloved!!!! 🤩
Ari, you own my heart now.
All such well written characters, now where's my Season 2 announcement?
#kaos netflix#eurydice kaos#orpheus kaos#orpheus and eurydice#kaos caeneus#cassandra kaos#dionysus#Hera#zeus#Hades#persephone#poseidon#ari kaos#Honorable mentions go to the absolute greek-fucking-tragedy of Ari's brother and what her mother put her through.#Watching her dad get stabbed was such a rollercoaster of emotions.#Like slay queen. Totally justified. But audience spent at least two episodes thinking that he was the “good parent” in the mix.#Dennis the cat deserved better.#Let us all hold a moment of silence for Dennis.#I loved that little kitten 😢#He was truly a gift to have onscreen.#Watching Dionysus cry over him broke me.#Can we all agree that Dionysus is going to go full John Wick over this?#Help. The Fates and Medusa made me cackle.

Now that I'm back in the online discourse of the Red Dead community after half a decade away waiting to have the ability to play and beat the second game, I'm really fairly quickly learning that there's this... weird, romanticized version of Arthur Morgan's character out there that really has no basis in reality.
Today I accidentally stumbled upon an anti-John Marston post and I'm not going to get into that here (even though I have A LOT to say), but the top comment was very strange to me. It talked about how Arthur is this 'giant', this 'greek hero', a perfect person, and as I read it I just... wasn't sure if I played the same game as them.
There's obviously a way of playing the game where he's this high honor hero, and I largely played that. But Arthur is also a deeply violent man, a deeply cynical and sometimes cruel guy. He's not a gentle humored guy, he's deeply sarcastic and at times kind of nasty with his humor, even to people he likes. He really often struggles with his worse nature, and it's not a struggle without reason. His first response to a situation is really often the most extreme, and the only reason I feel like people don't realize that outside of having a hand at deciding his honor is because he's the most outspoken about unnecessary vengeance... but that's not because he's opposed to it on principle, it's because it's important for him to protect his people, and that requires letting things go.
This isn't me bashing Arthur, by the way. The beauty of his character is how he struggles against himself, his own nature. How everyone can see his kindness even when he can't himself, even when his actions say otherwise. He's conflicted between what he wants his life to be and the life he has lead, the most important man in his life, one that's practically a father to him, instilled in him rules for life and he's watching him break every single one. For the first time in his life he has to figure out who he is and how he wants what little time he has to be defined. THAT'S a fantastic character, a hero even... but far, far, FAR from perfect. He's a deeply flawed human being who has done terrible things, and it makes me wonder the level of media literacy it takes to not understand that.
#Arthur Morgan#if he's a greek anything it's a greek tragedy#and that doesn't make him a pillar of heroism#Also like outside of the obvious ignoring of traits#(i should mention that this doesn't entirely surprise me from the rockstar audience btw#It bugs me because it's such a reductionist idea of how great his character actually is#To romanticize him as this perfect being is to devalue the wonderfully conflicted character they wrote#for multiple reasons#they have a weird habit of deifying male characters like this#and they also didn't realize nico bellic was a good character#and the ones that did didn't realize what his actual character was#or why things go the way they do in that game#rockstar has such a testosterone filled fandom that their literacy of morality and toxic masculinity should be questioned#this shouldn't have been a surprise to me)

Scrolling tiktok and getting frustrated because I saw someone say “sometimes when I get tired (on the treadmill) I keep walking just to prove Orpheus was a slacker and I could have easily saved Eurydice” just say you don’t understand the point of a tragedy and move on
#the point!!! of the original myth!!! and hadestown!!! is not that I would’ve been so easy to not have happened!!!#but the point that it didn’t have to happen!!! but it was always going to happen either way!!!#in hadestown the song where Orpheus looks back is literally the fucking fates!!!! themselves!!!! putting the doubt in his head#he was always going to look back but it didn’t need to happen that way that’s what makes it a tragedy#orpheus and eurydice#hadestown#she had wait for me reprise as the sound in the background and like did you not watch the musical at all#greek mythology#madurday night live

i see this around a lot, and i feel like it's important to note:
icarus did not burn.
it wasn't some blazing inferno, searing his skin and making his death sharp and quick. no, icarus had plenty of time to see what he'd done. his death was not shining or sunny, it had no glory. the wax burned up his wings, but never his body. his death was a slow, languid thing. when the water filled his lungs, he had only enough time to realize his own arrogance, not to stop it.
icarus never burned.
icarus drowned.
#icarus#poetry#i guess?#idk it's somewhere between poetry and a rant about the semantics of greek legends#i just feel like with all the icarus flew shit a lot of people miss that it's a tragedy#and that's not a critique!!#i love the idea of icarus laughing as he fell and all#but the story at it's core is a warning about over indulgence#and i find it easy to forget that#idk man someone ask me about greek legends and mythos i am BEGGING

sudden flashbacks to childhood as i remember the first book series i ever loved, Roman Mysteries. which in retrospect. has a lot. a lot. a LOT of issues
#i would go back to it like i have deltora quest but uh#i dont think. it will hold up.#theres 4 main characters. of the two girls one is flavia. a rich roman child#and then nubia. who is. a slave girl. and fucking. bought for flavia as a bday present#and it's played it off as ''flavia wants a friend and feels awful for this poor girl her age and so her dad buys her and they#look after/rescue her and teach her latin and then free her once shes situated well'' and it is VERY MUCH a white saviour story#that even had 6 yr old me like ''hm. this is immoral''#the series like. starts with flavia as the main main character and the other 3 characters also have their own storys and they team up#and somve mysteries but as time goes on the problem is that like. the other 3 characters are more interesting than flavia#lupus is a mute greek boy who had his tongue cut out by his abusive uncle and lived on the streets for years#jonathan is a jewish boy who lives next door to flavia and has storylines where hes forced to become a gladiator and at the end#of the series goes on an adventure to egypt to find his kidnapped twin nephews#and nubia goes looking for her brother who was also enslaved and forced to be a gladiator and has to navigate rome as an ex-slave#and black woman who was literally kidnapped and went through hell (also she. turns out to be an african princess later on. ANOTHER big thing#to unpack.)#but yeah from 6 yrs old to 13 as i read the stories i would get mad every time it cut to flavia#I DONT CARE ABOUT SUETONIUS OR GAIUS AND HOW YOU WANT TO DEDICATE YOURSELF TO ARTEMIS#OR WHATEVER BULLSHIT ROMANCE. GO BACK TO JONATHAN SEEING HIS OWN GRAVE AND COMBATING WITH HIS FAMILY THINKING HES DEAD#GO BACK TO THE TRAGEDY OF MIRIAM AND HER BABIES OR NUBIA GETTING HER OWN FUCKING STORYLINE PLEASE
