Now I want to know some of your polycule dynamic ideas for the bad kids???
This is a dream come true, okay walk with me
Let's start out with a couple of what I would consider fundamental pairings. In most any configuration of the group you can think of, most if not all of these are gonna be necessary for me to really get invested.
Fabriz. Duh. Need I say more.
Fabadaine. It's my fucking roman empire and I WILL go on about it for another thousand words if you ask
Figadaine. Support women's wrongs! Going shopping! My girlfriend is a rockstar and we make out backstage! My girlfriend is the elven oracle and we make out twice because she has a vision of it happening first!
I've also got some pairings that are nice on their own, but that I don't find like, mandatory if you're gonna sell me on something.
GorgugxFig. She's so loudly angry to hide her fear; he's so quietly scared of his own anger. She made him join her band and he's probably the better musician. They're so nice to each other.
FigxKristen. Fall into temptation. Make out with the devil on your shoulder. She helps you kill your god. She becomes your devoted paladin. The ArchDevil of Rebellion pulls you into a cosmic war against the very divinity you were the Chosen One for.
Now as for larger groupings, things get pretty fun. There are so many to choose from. Like for example:
The Bad Boys. Like as a throuple. Think about it. You're the cool son of a famous pirate; you're already kicking ass at bloodrush; youre hot shit. A metalhead and a briefcase kid latch onto you like barnacles. This is so embarassing. Cut to a month later and you're all on a rooftop sharing a cigarette and looking at the stars. The briefcase kid kisses you, and metalhead is next in line. Briefcase kid is also your best friend, even without the insane new tension and the fact that he can dismantle your coolguy persona with seemingly no effort. He tastes like burnt coffee. Even ignoring how metalhead can crack skulls, but treats you with gentleness and even hesitation, like he's afraid you'll turn him down. As if. His bangs get in the way when he kisses you.
The Bad Girls as a throuple. This one feels almost too obvious for words. Three girls who are all trying so hard and failing to be normal, but from three different directions. Imagine one day seeing the uptight wizard girl with rich parents and girl who tried to convert you to fantasy mormonism on her first day both walk into school one day holding hands with that punk girl who's in a band and who has already turned like six other students gay just by being cool and pretty. Then at lunch, they're all sitting together, and the elf and the cleric both have the bard's lipstick on their lips and cheeks. The cleric looks at you. She winks. You go home confused.
Figaydadaine. Figayda I don't have to sell you on, but you can't tell me Ayda and Adaine aren't so fucking cute together it hurts. They make spells for each other! Adaine has the key to the Wizard's Synod! Adaine killed her dad with Ayda's spell. Come ON, this shit writes itself. Honestly Aydaine is so good by itself
There's also an extended world of qpr among the bad kids - Rizdaine would be a great example of this. I don't think of them as a Couple, but they are SO close and there's so much trust and intimacy there. That's a pair that cuddle while watching movies or doing mystery stuff.
qpr FigGug is another great possibility. Just take all the sweet support and kindness they already have and pry out the romance.
I think if you pitched me another pair/group I could find something interesting about it, but those are my off-the-dome thoughts. Thanks for asking!

The ins and outs of love
Genshin Modern AU Summary
Sumeru's world renowned Akademiya has no need for much explaining, anyone who hasn't heard of it must be living under a rock or not from Teyvat itself. In the grand age of technology and modernization, Sumeru has become the largest immigration hub as aspiring people all across the world come to pursue knowledge and take the first steps into adulthood. To accommodate for the influx of people, Sumeru architects have gotten the help of Liyue's Adepti Arts and Contracting to create subspace apartments to prevent the need of clear cutting the sacred forests.
⚠️Trigger warnings ⚠️ : Mental illnesses, drug/alcohol/substance use/abuse, mentions of child enslavement (past event, a bit graphic), very brief mention of a sui attempt (also in the past, it's referenced very vaguely in a line of dialogue.), Abandonment mentions (Scara ofc), death, kidnapping, and slight yandere Heizou as a result of something later.
You are attending the school with your childhood friends Aether and Lumine and share an apartment with quite the colorful group of students:
Aether, an archaeology major wanting to explore into the depths of this strange world. He's been your best friend for so long you can't remember a time before meeting him.
Kazuha, a literary major that always seems to drift about. He's only recently left his hometown in Inazuma, originally intending to travel with the Crux fleet but heard a rumor that the Akademiya had sacred poems and long forgotten literature and couldn't resist the temptation to join.
Venti, a failing music major with a bit of a drinking problem. You've known him since highschool when he and his best friend Xiao talked you and Aether into making a band for one festival. After growing up and being ran out of Angel's Share tavern a few too many times, the godlike bard decided to pursue a more worldwide music career, using various agencies is Liyue Harbor to get his start he attends college by day and goes to almost every party and rave as he possibly can by night.
Students aren't the only ones in your apartment though, due to Sumeru's need to keep the forests intact, regular citizens are also put into these luxury apartments, which is why they are large in the first place. Also in your apartment is:
Heizou, currently taking on a recent case in Liyue due to Inazuma 'not having enough mysteries to solve'. He's charismatic, witty and a bit of a flirt but you've gotten past that and seen how much of a hard worker he is. At times he lends you his knowledge whether you ask or not.
Scaramouche, a guy shrouded in mystery. No one really knows who he is or what he likes, except for his fans and viewers that tune in nearly twice every week to his streams. From gaming, to arts and crafts, to just random content whenever he feels the creative itch, Scaramouche is a well beloved figure among the masses though the rumors about his possible Fatui ties and the sudden tension between him and Kazuha make you a bit nervous to interact.
Xiao, a guy who works two jobs from dawn to dusk and sometimes later. He's a good friend with Venti and you've known him just as long as the bard, he was the 'emo boy' in highschool but you two got along fairly well. One day he took you to a field of flowers and confessed a very dark secret that you swore to keep and haven't told a soul, not even Aether.

Hello! I see that you don't have anything and I'm just wondering if you're okay with writing a Barbatos/Venti x reader (platonic) angst where in the past, the reader was Barbatos's friend but died and Barb gets really sad remembering them.
A/N: So this is my first fic which I finished like 10 minutes ago and It is just occurring to me that the friend might not be referring to the nameless bard so to whoever submitted the request if this is not what you wanted I'd be happy to redo it for you. Also I don't know that much about Genshin lore so I did make a few things up.
The Wind Always Blows Us Back to the Past (Barbatos/Venti x reader platonic!)
"This vessel was the body of a dear friend who died long ago, but by living in this body, I pay homage to him who lost his life fighting for freedom."
There came a day when a wind spirit looking for food heard the music of a nameless bard singing passionately. Curious, the spirit came closer to listen to the melodious sound and see a basket filled with juicy apples. Next to it was a boy with deep black hair flowing in the gentle breeze as he plucked the strings of the lyre. The little spirit tried to sing along, but seemingly tone-deaf, he produced a cacophony of off-key noises that caught the attention of the bard.
"Hey! Who’s there?" He demanded sternly, but because of the small figure of the boy compared to the anger on his face, the wind spirit couldn’t help but laugh.
"Hey, don’t laugh." The bard stuttered, which just made the spirit laugh more.
"You there spirit, come down here at once." It decided to comply with the bard’s request and floated down in front of the boy, using its powers to summon a gentle breeze to keep it afloat while sweeping the bard's hair in the same direction.
"What do you want, spirit? What is the meaning of your rude interruption?" It nodded towards the basket in a pleading manner, desperate for the apples.
"Oh these?" The bard held up the basket to the wind spirit, and it floated closer in awe at the pleasant red of the fruit when it was suddenly snatched away. The spirit squealed in anger.
"Hmph. That's what you get for laughing." The bard said, his eyes closed in pettiness. In response, the wind spirit summoned a breeze directly into the bard's head, making his hair whip his face.
"H-Hey, quit it out!" The wind kept blowing until the bard reached into the basket and threw an apple past the spirit’s head. It pursued the object hastily before finally catching up to it and devouring it at an astonishing rate.
"Wow, you must’ve really been hungry, huh?" The spirit nodded.
"Well, let me tell you something. If you aren’t annoying, I’ll give you all the food if you want. Also, please don’t try to sing again." The spirit mulled it over, and even though it was slightly insulted by the insinuation that it couldn’t sing, it accepted the bard’s offer, and they became friends. From then on, they were inseparable, and the spirit heard the boys cries for freedom—to leave this prison and go see the world beyond—which led to the rebellion against the king of Olde Mondstat Decarabian.
"Okay, it’s time. Our preparations have been made; it's time to storm the castle." The bard announced this to the band of rebels hiding in the underground of Olde Mondstat. Next to him, a little wind spirit fluttered excitedly.
"Are you ready, Barbatos? We have to depart at once." The wind blew gently, pushing the bard’s hair back.
"Ha-ha Barbatos, now let’s be serious; war is just about to start." Usually the bard was cool, calm, and carefree, but now his expression had hardened in preparation for the upcoming battle. The ground shook with the simultaneous marching of the soldiers as they approached the tyrant's castle with the bard at the front. He left his lyre for a battlehorn and screamed
"Your rule is no more Decarabian!" And with those words, he blew the horn, and the army, small but mighty, charged through those grand iron gates for their freedom. Even though the bard was no warrior, he had an indomitable spirit. He slashed the opposing soldiers with a force that was almost graceful. They progressed further; their numbers had not shaken while the enemy forces were dwindling. They kept pushing until they had reached the castle, and Decarabian stood in front of them. They charged, but then the god unleashed his power, and the wind cut through the army, slicing the soldiers, and how unfortunate that one of them was the bard. As the wind spirit rushed to its friends' side, the remaining soldiers rushed the old king of Mondstat, and right then and there they ended his rule. Cut to centuries later, the spirit had taken the form of his friend and was currently punishing his liver with drink after drink at the local tavern. It was not only the anniversary of the freeing of the citizens of Mondstat but also the anniversary of the bard’s death. At a table away from the crowd sat the Anemo Archon in disguise, wallowing in his misery. The most recent jug of dandelion wine had been consumed, and Venti’s tears had still not stopped falling.
"Another drink here, please." He yelled out to the barkeep. He brought a bottle of dandelion and gently poured it into the glass Venti was holding up. When he went to go back behind the bar, Venti tugged on his tunic.
"Leave the bottle," he was slurring heavily, but against the bartender’s better judgement, he left the bottle next to the already extremely drunk bard. Hours went by with Venti drinking bottle after bottle until the bartender, extremely concerned for the bard’s present condition, called the traveller to assist in bringing Venti out of the bar to wherever he was staying. The blonde sat down at the table.
"Hey Tone-Deaf Bard, what are you doing?" Paimon squealed aggressively.
"I-I-Im uhhhhhhhh immmmm finnnneeee" Venti continued slurring his words, much to the dismay of the traveller.
"Come on, Venti, let's get you out of here."
"No Traveller im okayyyy jussss jussssst go"
"Sorry, Venti, but I can’t do that." The traveller stood their ground, adamant about making sure Venti got out of there okay. They then began to grab Venti’s arm and try to pull him up. Even though he was severely drunk, Venti still resisted.
"Traveller, I told you to go. I'm fine. Okay, okay just leave." Venti stopped slurring his words, and his face had formed a deadly serious expression, staring daggers at the traveller.
"I’m sorry, Venti, but I can’t do that." The traveller approached Venti again, gripping his arm harder this time.
"I told you to let go!" Venti screamed, summoning a gale and forcing the traveller into the nearest wall. Looking on the scene in horror, he fled to a site he had not gone to in a while: the grave of the nameless bard. The wind blowing through the trees was sweet and cool, but sadly, he would never feel it. The archon fell to his knees in front of the grave, soaking the soil with his tears.
"I know we haven’t spoken in a while, so there are some things I need to catch you up on." He took a more comfortable position, sitting cross-legged, trying to reform his smile as he recounted the most important events that had taken place in Mondstat. Hours had gone by by the time Venti had finished telling the story of Stormterror's rampage and the Traveller’s adventures.
"You’d have made a great song out of The Traveller, one that would’ve been sung for ages to come, but alas, somethings are not meant to be." The tears started again, and Venti looked up to the sky.
"It looks like these trees have borne fruit after all, friend." Venti rose to the tree with the assistance of a wind current, ripped an apple from one of the branches, and floated back down to the grave.
"Dear friend, even though you have passed, I will continue to honour your memory in this form till the day comes when I am no longer able to." With that declaration, Venti took a bite of the apple and sat back down, still enjoying the pleasant breeze. He then drifted off to sleep, dreaming of adventures they would’ve embarked on had fate not taken the bard away so quickly, but alas, it was not meant to be.

Prince Steve and Harpist Eddie AU (steddie)
Steve Harrington is the only son of the ruler of the Great Hawkins Kingdom. He's supposed to inherit the throne in the future and become the king Steve one day. Also he's definitely supposed to marry some beautiful young lady from a good family and make future successors of the Harrington bloodline. There are some problems though. Firstly, he doesn't even want to rule. Secondly, he's very much gay. Obviously his parents don't know about it and if they knew they wouldn't acknowledge it anyway. He has to do it and there's no room for negotiation.
So for his twenty first birthday the king throws a party inviting all nobel families who have yet unmarried daughters close to steve's age. They want him to choose his future wife on that party and if he won't - they'll choose for him. The day of the party comes way too quickly and he finds himself standing next to his parents' thrones at the head of a ball room. He's looking at all those girls hungrily watching him with the growing dread in his stomach.
His eyes wander until they land on the band playing on the balcony. To be exact - on the devilishly handsome harp player on the left. Long dark curls, eyes contured with a bit of coal as is popular among the bards, halfly closed in dreamy manner. He has never seen anyone as beautiful as him. How Steve is supposed to find himself a wife when a man of his dreams is in the same room? The answer is he can't.
Against his reason, when he sees the band retreat for a break, he excuses himself to his parents and sprints to the second floor, where he's hoping to catch his dream boy. The heavens must be on his sides, because as soon as he turns the corner of the staircase, he sees his target. He calls out to him and walks the remaining distance trying to catch his breath and gather suddenly lost courage. The dream boy looks rather confused and guarded as he wasn't expecting prince Steve here and he can't imagine what interest he would have with him other that something that means trouble. He begins to kneel as is expected of anyone meeting the royalty but Steve quickly says he doesn't want him to. He looks at the young primce's face and he's met with a strar struck gaze. As if the harpist was another world wonder. He's clearly nervous too and the long haired couldn't be more lost about what's going on here. Then Steve as if he heard the harpist thoughts, says he was amazed by their play and he wanted to meet the band personally. He asks them their names and introduces himself too as if they don't know who he is.
Steve feels ecstatic that he managed to praise them without making a fool of himself and now he has a name of the dream boy! Eddie. He's already imagining what this name would look like next to his in the royal chronicles. Eddie, a little charmed by the prince's nervous behavior and not immune to his more than good look, moves past the previous apprehension and starts to chat with Steve as if they were on the same status. He talks about his music and life as an artist while the prince confide with him with the true purpose of this party and why it's impossible for him to choose a girl. They talk standing by the wall with no care to the rest of the world. They both don't know why they feel so comfortable telling each other so much about themselves when they just met but it's like something moves into right place inside them the longer they're together. The peace doesn't last long though and soon they hear guard calling out to Steve, evidently looking for him. Thank heavens they don't see the two just yet so Eddie has enough time to run where the rest of the band went off to some time before. The guards take Steve back to the ball room and for the rest of the night he feels Eddie's eyes on him, as he dances with the girls. He doesn't dare to lift his own gaze back to the harpist as he knows he won't be able to resist going up there again.
Soon the night comes to an end and he chooses the only girl that appeared as much opposed to the idea of marrying as him. Her name is Robin and she was also forced to come to the party by her parents. And evidently the girls here were more interesting to her than him. So he took a risk and made a proposition that if she doesn't want to marry a boy and he doesn't want to marry a girl they should team up and marry each other to please their parents but at the same time keep meeting who that really want. To his surprise she agreed. His parents satisfied that he chose himself a wife leave him alone for the next few days, busy with preparation for the formal engagement and future wedding.
He uses the free time to come to the city in a disguise to look for Eddie. He only has his name and the name of the band. It's enough though. Turns out the band is more popular than he thought and soon he has the name and the hour of their next gig. He's lucky again, the show is in few hours. He finds the place and pay for one of the room upstairs to wait. When the time comes he stands close to the scene waiting for the artist to come. Finally Eddie walks in front of the crowd and immediately notices Steve. His smile is truly blinding and it's like he's energy doubled. He plays with new found purpose, this time also singing a few parts. Steve keeps his eyes on him throughout the concert enraptured by his play and voice.
When the show ends they both stay at the bar drinking together and talking until late hours. When it's closing time Steve takes the musician upstairs to his room where they fall into each other in an embrace, their lips finally meeting. They lay in bed and soon they fall asleep curled together. In the morning Steve tells Eddie about the marriage and his plan made with Robin. Suddenly looking nervous he asks if they maybe could keep meeting even after his wedding? Of course Eddie agrees, he honestly couldn't say no to the prince who apperently stole his heart.

CTB Scrap - Legend's Journey to Faron
This is from the beginning of the present day section chapter 20, where Legend explains what happened to him.
As you can see, Legend originally got to steal the POV for a time. While this goes into greater detail about what he went through, I ended up changing this to a speech to keep my stylistic choices intact.
Note: this is an unedited scrap, so the writing may not be up to snuff. Also, everything include was deleted for a reason, so please do not take it as canon to CTB.
---
Legend’s story was a familiar one.
When his friends were forced to split-up, he ran southward, intent on making it to Faron without being captured. Unlike the rest of the heroes, he had something no one else had: an aptitude for blending into foreign lands and cultures. Yes, this was a Hyrule but this was not his country. He was a foreigner here. Taking the road often traveled was a risk he could take, if only for one fact: no one in this era knew he was not always a boy.
In his dresses and make-up, he came off as a mere peasant. He found a band of civilians at the heels of a regiment heading south. All he had to do was hang on and avoid attention.
For weeks, he managed to pass himself off just another nameless face in the crowd. He walked with a cane and said he was looking to reunite with a brother who had been drafted months before. He bemoaned to everyone who asked that he had not left with his brother when he had the chance. The mothers who worried for their husbands and sons took to him like he was an abandoned fowling, keeping his fed and safe.
As well traveled as he was, this was the first time his safety depended on blending in. He was jumpy whenever someone so much as looked at him a second too long. What was his brother’s name, what regiment was he in, where did you grow up: he answered every question smoothly, yet it left his heart rattling in his ribcage.
When the rumors of Link Walton’s death reached his ears, he had to pretend to laugh with the rowdy soldiers drinking next to him until he could escape somewhere to cry.
He told himself this wasn’t any different from the rest of his travels. He had seen more corners of the world than most ever would. He had been so far from home that the people had no inkling of Hylia and her heroes. He had heard languages that sounded like songs and the chirping of birds. He had stood before great red mountains and churning purple seas that even the most imaginative bard could never conjure. He had stood in the middle of metropolises teeming with things his eyes could hardly comprehend, truly feeling like a speck dust under the blinking blanket of the universe.
This was nothing new, and maybe that was where he faltered.
He volunteered to help an elderly woman with the laundry. He had knelt at the river bend, rolled up his sleeves, and started to drag the clothes over the washboard. It was only when he noticed her granddaughter’s staring that he realized that he had taken off his gloves to reveal his scar of the Triforce.
He had hushed her into secrecy, making her promise to not say a word about it. But he had little faith. Over the weeks, he had pinned her as someone with loose lips: a gossiper always wanting the next big story. Legend had spent many a night cackling over the tales she had told him about the traveling doctor or the prostitutes.
Kneeling at the river, soap suds up to his elbows, he knew he had two options: guarantee the girl didn’t talk or think of a new plan.
It wasn’t much of a debate. He finished the clothes, hung them up to dry, then walked himself over to the Royal Guard. “I’m one of the heroes of Hyrule,” he said. “And I’m here to enlist.”
Turning himself over to the Royal Guard had its perks. Since he was cooperative, he was able to convince any suspicious of him that he sincere wished to help Hyrule. He bit his tongue when accusations of treachery were thrown his way until, right when he swore he tasted copper around his teeth, they finally relented. None of the lords judging him trusted him, but he wasn’t a prisoner.
That was all he needed. He just needed to stave off accusations until he was in Faron. From there, he could escape and make it to the Temple of Souls.
For a time, it seemed possible. This was a regiment he had never seen before. There were no familiar faces, not even Impa. As long as he postured as some grand hero, he could make it through. Then he heard that the Royal Guard had another hero under its tutelage. He didn’t know anything else, only that the princess was excited for his aid. It could have been a trap, but it could have been one of his friends in an even worse situation, held against his will.
“So I stuck with where I was and let them take me to the front lines,” Legend said, more than happy to let Hyrule continue to hug him as he stood in the middle of the kitchen. They had migrated in there as Legend had talked, him only pausing to accept hugs and exchange words of relief with Hyrule, Wild, Four, and Sky. But he kept his eyes on Time, forcing his story from his mouth. “They took me straight to that main regiment we were at before, with the princess and Impa. I found the rancher and Midna there.”
Warriors hadn’t said a word at this point, focused on remembering every small detail. He went straight to the map they had left on the table, unrolling it open as best he could. Lana and Lincoln rushed to join him, getting the corners pinned as Proxi fetched a piece of charcoal for him to write with. “Where are they located?” he asked.
Wild shoved a piece of buttered bread into Legend’s hand, which he took gladly. “Uh, about twenty miles from here.”
“What’s the nearest town? River? Do you remember the coordinates?”
Legend tore off some of the bread with his mouth, chewing loudly as he turned to Four and said, “Who’s this guy?”

Robin Hood and His Merry Band
list of characters for an original series I’m working on
Alan-a-Dale - the gloomy and cynical bard, the grumpy voice of reason who doesn’t give a fuck, wonders why he hangs out with these crazies, knows it’s cause they’re family to him but won’t admit it out loud, besties with Friar Tuck even though they never agree on anything, is clearly a bi disaster
The Archdeacon of Canterbury - The aging head cleric of the church of England. He supports King Richard but is becoming increasingly impotent because of his failing health. Still holds a lot of political power because of his title though.
The Azure Assassin - A deadly mercenary and rival to Robin Hood. Orphaned at a young age Azure had to steal to survive. She stowed away on a pirate ship at the age of ten and has spent the pass eight years studying fighting techniques the world over. They call her the Azure Assassin because her blue eyes are the last thing you’ll see before dying. She’s gained a modest fortune and fame as a spy and assassin, however she can never stay in one play too long due to her reputation getting out. Prince John has offered her a pardon and a place in high society if she brings in Robin Hood’s head. Shame she’s fallen in love with his brother Will Scarlet, as that complicates matters.
The Bishop of Hereford - Conservative asshole who supports Prince John’s rule and shares his beliefs on ‘bringing order to the kingdom’. Wants to usurp the Archdeacon as the head of the church. Is Friar Tuck’s and Sister Clara’s arch nemesis.
Dame Brianna DuBois - Also known as the The Black Knight, DuBois is loyal to the throne of England and whoever sits upon it. She’s Prince John’s personal bodyguard and unbeknownst to all a double agent for King Richard who is in hiding. However she is conflicted when her duty places her lover Yua in jeopardy. Yes, she’s totally a butch lesbian.
The Duke of Essex - Prince John’s adviser and right hand man. He only cares for power for power’s sake but is sneaky and conniving and willing to play the long game to get it. He prefers poison to swords, but is surprisingly good at hand to hand combat when cornered. Has a pet snake. It’s the only living thing that he loves.
Elenore of England - Prince John and King Richard’s sister and Maid Marian’s mother. She died when negotiations during a worker dispute turned violent. Unable to quell the people’s rage, she was stuck down during a riot. Richard, blaming himself for losing his temper and causing things to escalate has since tried to follow in her footsteps and become peacemaker. Prince John went the opposite route and blamed the ungrateful peasants (criminals in his mind) and resented Richard for even bothering to negotiating in the first place.
Friar Tuck - The jovial and optimistic heart of the team. He tries to keep everyone’s spirits up and believes that helping people is the ultimate expression of god’s love. Is a hopeless romantic and also very, very gay. He butts heads with more traditional leaders of the church often. He also has a not so secret crush on his best friend Alan.
Guy of Gisbourne - From pauper to nobleman, Guy is Robin’s opposite in everyway. He crawled up from the bottom rung by using and stepping on others and he’s always looking for the opportunity to climb the ranks. Don’t let his foppish ways fool you though, he is both a cunning and ruthless foe and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. His latest scheme however is to marry Maid Maiden and become next in line for the throne as Prince John has no other heirs save his ward.
King Richard - Good Richard the Lionhearted is no longer a bloodthirsty crusader in this alternate universe but a peacemaker. He wishes to end wars, not start them, however his more abrasive, uncouth, and impulsive nature can often clash with his loftier goals. Many feel the king would do better to stay at home and tend to domestic matters instead of concerning himself with the conflicts of other far off lands. At the start of the story he has disappeared on one of his diplomatic visits. In reality Prince John has stuck a deal with the king’s enemies and he is currently on the run.
Lady Tiffany - Little John’s little wife and the daughter of the Sherriff of Nottingham. She acts as the gang’s ‘man on the inside’ helping Robin Hood sneak in and out of places and feeding the team needed information. She’s stubborn and spoiled but also very kind hearted. She usually can get her father to give into her demands with just a pout and when that doesn’t work a full on tantum will do. She a woman who knows what she wants and what she wants is her man. Unfortunately daddy dreariest would never approve of their union and so Friar Tuck marries them in secret.
Little John - Robin’s best friend and right hand man. He’s a simple man who loves life’s simple pleasures, good food, good friends, and a good brawl from time to time. He adores his partner, Tiffany and would like nothing more than to marry her for real, in a real church, in front of the whole world. However their relationship must remained hidden from her father, the Sheriff, since the violent lawman would sooner see him hanged then have a thief for a son-in-law.
Lord Locksley - Robin’s and Will’s father. He is arrested for ‘not paying taxes’ but in reality it’s for supporting King Richard and secretly helping the displaced monarch. His arrest leads to Robin and Will becoming outlaws and the series kicks off two years later.
Maid Marian - Prince John’s ward and niece. Her mother died when she was young and her beloved uncle adopted her. Prince John is the only parent she’s ever known and she at first believes him to be a kind and just man. She’s completely oblivious of Prince’s John’s underhanded dealings and oppression of the poor and at first is skeptical of Robin Hood. However as the two grow closer, Marian learns how harsh the real world is and just how much her father figure has lied to her.
Miss Yua - Maid Marian’s lady-in-waiting and best friend. She’s the daughter of Sir Ivanhoe and longs to be a knight as well. She’s a stickler for rules and doesn’t trust Robin Hood and his gang of thieves. At first anyways, over time she too learns of Prince John’s cruelty and even becomes a victim of the tyrant’s schemes. Which puts her in direct conflict with her love, Brianna DuBois.
Much the Miller's Son - born as Midge the miller’s daughter, the young Much longs to be accepted as a boy. As such he’s ditched his dresses, cut his hair, and ran away to Sherwood Forrest in order to be free from society’s expectations. The rest of the merry band accepts Much for who he really is, but at only 13 won’t let him join their gang. He still winds up caught up in their misadventures anyways due to his refusal to listen to anybody, and his determination to get away from his overbearing mother.
Nurse Agnes - Maid Marian’s wet nurse and the closest thing to a mother that she has. Agnes believes in the ‘old ways’ and is very superstitious. She’s also very critical of royalty in general, but is smart enough not to say so out loud. She’s tried to raise Marian into a better person than Prince John, but eventually was dismissed once Marian had come of age. Since leaving the court Agnes has become the witch of the woods and a healer for the poor.
Prince John - The main antagonist. Prince John believes that he needs to bring order to the kingdom of England and feels like his brother King Richard has neglected his duties as ruler and placed the kingdom in danger. He'll do whatever it takes to protect the country including subjecting it’s undesirables.
Robin Hood - Leader of the Merry Band and archer extraordinaire, Robin Hood had to go on the lam when his father was arrest for ‘treason’. While his first priority was to keep his baby brother, Will, safe, the two of them met other outcasts in need over the years have built up an underwound network of rebels who fight against Prince John’s rule. Seemingly suave and cool at first, Robin is actually a bundle of nerves as he tries desperately to keep his friends and family safe...even if it’s mostly from themselves. His world is turned upside down though when he meets the lovely Maid Marian.
Sheriff of Nottingham - The spiteful and cruel sheriff tries to keep the small town of Nottingham under his thumb. He hates Robin Hood and his Merry Band with a passion and sees their continued exitance as a personal insult. The only thing that will deter him from his goal of putting those outlaws in their place is his devotion to his beloved daughters Tiffany. Who distracts him with her seemingly impulsive and shallow whims.
Sir Ivanhoe - A respected knight who once served under King Richard has returned home only to find that his king has not made the journey back as planned. He suspects that Prince John is up to no good, but is afraid to make any risky moves so long as his daughter Yua lives among the court. Her safety is the most important thing in the world to him.
Sister Clara - The resident nerd of Sherwood Forrest and the brains of the team. Clara had joined a convent in order to receive an education and to study science, however her experiments were frowned upon by more traditional leaders of the church, like the Bishop of Hereford. She’s since renounced her monastic vows and has joined Robin Hood’s Merry Band in the pursuit of science! She’s allowed free rein on the sole condition that she doesn’t blow up the camp. She still manages to blow up the camp, at least once a month. Still her inventions are invaluable to the team and she’s absolutely feral with her chim-bombs.
The Trapper - A mysterious hermit who sometimes visits the local pub. He’ll often corner patrons with crazy drunken ramblings and loves to give Robin cryptic prophecies and disjoined ‘clues’ whenever they run into each other. (turns out this is an act and he’s really a spy for King Richard)
Will Scarlett - Robin’s younger brother. Will was 15 when they lost their father and now at 17 wants revenge. He’s a hothead and is constantly picking fights with everyone and anyone. While he is dismissive of Robin’s overprotectiveness, he both loves and admires his brother. Even tries to emulate him in some ways. He also would like to think of himself as a smooth talking clever con artist and ladies man but more often then not his temper gets the better of him. Like most teens he’s obsessed with the latest fashion tends and loves to wear fancy clothes (that he’s usually stolen) He’s favorite article of clothing is his impractical red feathered hat. He’s in love with Azure and is best friends with Much.

And he was immortal (WIP)
Hello hello, this is my first time posting my writing anywhere so I’m excited but also a little nervous! After I watched the Witcher on Netflix, inspiration hit me like a train and so here we are. I hope you enjoy:)
Fandom: The Witcher
Pairing: Geralt x Jaskier
CW: minor character (OC) death, other than that you should be fine. If there’s anything else I should tag pls let me know!
So we all know that Jaskier unfortunately is human in canon. But hear me out, what if he wasn’t? I present to you, half-elf!Jaskier:) (also the title is a wip as well so if anyone has title suggestions pls feel free to comment them or shoot me a dm)
When Julian Alfred Pankratz is 8 years old, his mother tells him he is half elf and gifts him a bracelet of brown and blue pearls. It looks just like the one she wears around her left wrist, except hers is brown and green. The colour of her eyes, little Julian thinks. She instructs him to never take it off again. He nods and slips it over his left wrist, the band tightening as if by magic until it fits snugly around his small arm.
‘Listen carefully, my little one’, she says and kneels to be on his eye level. ‘The world is not kind to our kin. This is the only thing I can do to protect you from now on.’ Her eyes are piercing and serious and little Julian swallows nervously. ‘Soon, the changes will begin. Would you like to see what I mean?’ Little Julian nods again. With a swift movement, she takes off her bracelet and her eyes begin to glow softly. Her ears, previously round and soft, have graceful pointed tips. She smiles, warm and kind as she has always been and her teeth are too straight. She taps the place where her canines would be normally and little Julian runs his tongue along his own pointy teeth.
His mother slips the bracelet over her wrist and her eyes return to their normal green colour. ‘There is more. Come, my little one.’ His mother extends her hand and they leave his room. She leads him to her garden, the one that none of the children are allowed to enter and that is guarded by at least two men at all times of day. He blinks in awe at the colourful flowers and sweet-smelling herbs. His mother smiles at her little boy’s wonder but steers them to a flower pot with her favourite plant. She kneels beside Julian again and takes a small flower bud between her fingers. She whispers a few words and his eyes widen at the impossible sight before him. Slowly, the flower bud unfurls and blooms a beautiful yellow-orange. He gasps and turns to his mother, who only laughs softly. ‘When the time comes, I will teach you all I know. Do you want to learn?’
‘Yes!’ he shouts excitedly and she chuckles.
When Julian Alfred Pankratz is 12 years old, his mother dies in her sickbed. For all her knowledge on herbs and medicinal plants there was nothing she could do to stop the sickness. Neither could Julian, only having learned under her for three years. Julian feels empty and cold, but he knows he must keep it together for his sister. Essi is only 7 years old but she understands that her mother is gone forever.
It takes him weeks to pick up his lute again. When he does, Essi comes running. He brings her to bed and sings to her until she falls asleep, careful to keep the magic out of his voice, just like his mother taught him.
Later, he finds his mothers’ jewelry box. Buried under all the glittering necklaces and gem-studded rings there is a bracelet, the twin to the one on his left wrist. He takes it out and hides it in his own box of jewelry.
When Julian Alfred Pankratz is 13 years old, he runs away from home. Naturally, he is caught by his father’s guards not half a days’ journey from the estate grounds. He is brought to his father’s study, where he sits behind a giant oak desk. He sets his blue eyes on him, blue like his sons’ eyes. He looks so tired, Julian thinks.
‘I wish to be free.’, he states with all the courage he can muster. Granted, it’s not much. He used it all up on his daring elopement.
‘Julian.’, his father says.
‘You and I both know I could never be your heir. Teodor is the eldest but even if he wasn’t he is the only one who can inherit your title and lands.’ Julian isn’t bitter or resentful towards his elder stepbrother, born from a union of his fathers’ first wife. He is glad that his brother will take on the burden as the heir to the Viscount de Lettenhove, because it leaves Julian to do as he pleases. If only his father would allow it.
His father sighs deeply. ‘Do you think I don’t know the laws? Do you think I enjoy the way your mother was treated by them?’ He rubs a hand over his face. ‘Very well, you may have your freedom. You may go to Oxenfurt to study whatever it is you wish to study.’
Julian’s heart jumps in his chest and he rushes forward to hug his father. ‘Thank you, father!’, he whispers as warm hands pat his back.
Julian packs meticulously for his journey (others would say he is attempting to stuff his entire room into two travel packs). In the midst of it all, Essi plops down on his bed to watch him intently. As Julian turns his room upside down to find that particular red doublet, Essi I know you must have seen it! his brother enters and laughs at the mess Julian’s made.
‘You are leaving then?’, he asks.
‘Father has allowed me to study at Oxenfurt.’ Julian can’t contain the bubbling joy and smiles. ‘I will become the best bard on the whole Continent, just you watch me!’ His brother grins and they clasp hands. Essi jumps from the bed and tackles them both into a hug. ‘Take care of yourself.’, his brother mutters. ‘We will miss you.’ Essi is sniffling a little but makes an effort to hold it in. She hugs her brothers tighter.
‘And I will miss you.’, Julian says soflty. ‘You both take care of each other for me, will you?’ They both nod and Essi releases her tight hold.
Teodor makes his goodbyes and leaves Julian’s room again.
‘This reminds me, Poppet’, he turns to his dressing table and opens his box of jewelries.
‘Will I get your ring?’, Essi screams excitedly and jumps up and down. Julian smiles at her antics but returns to show her his gift.
She looks at it plaintively, then back to her brother. ‘A bracelet?’ The confusion is clear in her voice, tinged with disappointment.
‘Listen carefully, Poppet.’ He kneels down to face his little sister. A strange sense of déjà-vu overcomes him and he can’t fight the wistful smile. His face turns serious again as he fixes Essi with his eyes. ‘When I was eight years old, Mother gifted me this bracelet.’ He holds up his left arm and her little hands find the blue and brown pearls with ease. ‘Tell me, how old will you be this summer, Poppet?’
‘Eight’, she replies quickly.
‘That’s right!’, he praises, proud of his little Essi.
‘You see, Mother was an elf.’
She gasps and clasps her hands before her mouth.
‘That means that we are half-elves, both of us. Because of that, our bodies begin to change at a certain age. Our ears become pointed, our eyes glow and we develop magic.’ Essi’s enormous blue eye shines softly, the other hiding away behind her unruly blonde locks.
‘Would you like to see?’, Julian asks. She nods vigorously. He chuckles and takes off his bracelet. He can feel the glamour fall away and reveal his pointed ears, glowing eyes and missing canines. All things that make him different, stand out, reveal his true nature. Essi only stares in wonderment. He slips his bracelet back on and holds the other one out to her. She takes it and brings the pearls close to her face, examining them. ‘Put it on for me, please, Poppet?’ She nods again and slides it on her left wrist, the band tightening to fit her small arm. ‘Now Poppet, this is very important, do you hear me?’ She looks him in the eye. ‘You must never, under any circumstance, take off your bracelet. This world is not kind to those who are different. Mother left this behind to protect you, to protect us, even after she is gone.’ Essi frowns. ‘But you just took it off!’, she eyes him, accusation clear in her voice.
‘My clever Poppet,’ he smiles. ‘That is because you are family and because I trust you. Even in front of father or Teodor, I would not take off my bracelet. Do you understand?’
‘Yes.’ Essi replies, playing with the pearls on her wrist. ‘Very good.’ He kisses the top of her head softly.
‘What did you mean when you…’, she trails off.
‘What is it, Poppet?’
‘You said something about magic.’ She fixes him with her blue eye, blowing her hair out of her face. Julian smiles again. ‘I can show you if you want. Wait in your room, it’s time for an afternoon nap anyways.’ She dashes off and Julian is left in his room. He looks around and winces at the mess he’ made. The two travel packs sit on his bed, stuffed to the seams with his clothes and other supplies he will need. Behind the packs, his lute is propped up on a pillow. He grabs it and follows Essi to her room. She is bundled up beneath her covers and only her wild mop of hair peeks out. He settles beside her on the bed and starts playing.
Let’s hide under the covers
We don’t know what’s out there
Could be wolves
So hold me, lover, like you used to
So tight I’d bruise you
I’d bruise you, I’d bruise you too
Careful not to let his control slip, he lets some of his magic escape and dance with his voice and his words. Essi, drowsy from Julian’s magic, rests against his side. He hums and continues strumming until he hears her soft, even breaths and turns to see her fast asleep.

Sibling AU
because apparently this is a thing I've got on my mind now. (Probs won't be writing it any time soon but I have a primal need to info dump, and maybe I'll inspire someone else.)
Characters
Eda Clawthorn - Canon Eda: She's Eda. She loves all 3 Noceda girls but is closest to Luz
King - Canon King: He's King.
Lucia Noceda - Beta Luz: Her weirdness is sorta toned down compared to Canon Luz. She's a bit more angsty. Reeeaaaally needs to smile more. Absolute D E L I N Q U E N T. Get’s into trouble on purpose, be gay do C R I M E. Feral. Totally down to help with Eda’s less honorable schemes. Tries to seem more “over it” and grown up but is secretly just as enthusiastic as Luz. She's more closed off, her life’s been a bit harder. Very protective of Luz and Laia, DO NOT fuck with them in front of her. Ready and willing to throw down. Deeeeeefinitely not hopelessly in love with Amelia. Age 17
Luz Noceda - Canon Luz. You know her, you love her. Age 14
Laia Noceda - Pilot Luz: Just as weird as Luz but a bit more laid back and shy. Doesn’t like putting herself out there quite as much as Luz, but gets dragged into her schemes a lot. Huge nerdy bookworm but perfectly capable of being flirty. Actually pretty confident with Anna. Too precious for this world. Is babey. Sits back and observes her sisters antics bc she's actually got a little sense. Age 13
Amelia Blight - Beta Amity: Cold but F E R A L. Doesn't even try to be the little miss perfect anymore but will pretend in front of parents. C H A R I S M A. Will fuck you up. Sorta pyromaniac but not like crazy, just good w/ fire magic and feels calm when she watches flames. Will burn you to ash if you hurt Amity or Anna. Rolls eyes at the twins antics. “You were going to do WHAT with Amity’s diary!?” Lotta internalized shit from her treatment by her parents. THIS CLOSE to burning down Blight manor. “If I have zero friends nobody can hurt me”. Lucia really throws a wrench in that plan. Toooootally not madly in love with Lucia. Natural greenhead but constantly dyes her roots brown as a form of small rebellion and solidarity with Amity and Anna. Age 17
Edric Blight - Canon Edric: You know him. Age 16
Emira Blight - Canon Emira: You know her. Age 16
Amity Blight - Canon Amity: Our girl! Age 14
Anna Blight - pilot Amity: Is babey. Loves books. Shy and tries to stick silently to the background. Just so sweet and precious. PROTECC HER. Tries to do the right thing. Like, ALL her siblings do their best to protect her from her parents. Not good with people at all. Age 13.
Winona Park - Beta Willow: You've seen Dana’s drawing of her. This shady bitch. She knows all your secrets. She will use them against you. Likes a little trouble but doesn't get caught. Ever. By the time you figure out what rule she broke she's already won the game. Don't. Touch. Willow. T R O U B L E. Loner until Lucia came along. Just does not care about anything. Doesn't even try in school but is still almost as good as Amelia. Not quite as powerful as Willow but still powerful. “What happens if I press this button.” Age 17
Willow Park - Canon Willow: You know her, stronk cinnamon roll. Age 14
Gus Porter - Canon Gus: Boy needs more character development. Age 12
(Story might not go quite like I'm describing it here but it's pretty close.)
Eda was going to eat King when they first met, they tell it like it's just some cute story.
Camilia was going to send both Luz and Laia to normal-person-camp but didn’t even try with Lucia bc she's clearly a lost cause. Lucia waited for the bus with them though, and she and Laia both followed Luz through the portal. Luz was the one who decided to stay on the isles, Laia just agreed bc she also hated the idea of camp, and being a witch sounded fun. Lucia agreed bc “well I'm not leaving my fucking siblings in another dimension on their own” but also was jumping up and down inside at the idea of being a witch.
Lucia and Laia were just vibing at the owl house during Witches Before Wizards because nobody told them shit.
Luz and Laia both went to the school in I Was a Teenage Abomination, Lucia didn’t bc “school? Why would I willingly go to school?” so she wandered off to town to do GOD knows what. Laia just hid in the bottom of the pot, but wandered off, Anna helped save her and get her out in the end. Later, at the covention, Laia gave Anna the “thanks pal” drawing.
Luz and Laia were both captivated by Eda’s magic lesson in Intrudor, Lucia was just hanging back with her arms crossed like she didn't care but inside she was going “I'm gonna be a witch! I'm gonna be a witch!”. Luz discovered the light glyph but Lucia came up with the idea of sticking it on the wall.
At the covention, Lucia saw Amelia and was actually gonna go over and be flirty bc Hot Witch Girl, but then she overheard her talking to Amity about her fighting Luz and instantly big sister mode. They got into a fist fight out back over “my sister’s better than yours.” their relationship after that is just Lucia constantly antagonizing Amelia and almost getting burned. Anna just stayed by the sidelines at the covention and Laia didn't see her until the very end, talked a bit and gave her the drawing b4 being dragged out by Eda.
Laia helped w/ the moonlight conjuring, but Lucia heard "night market" and sneaked off there. She didn't see Eda'z predicament but did run into Winona, who was making trouble and just being generally shady. Lucia helped her out with the shady business because why not and they were instantly friends, their friendship has a lot of Lucia going “you scare me sometimes.”
Laia went to the Library with Luz, she saw Anna just hanging out reading in the corner and immediately went over and sat by her. They were in Amity’s hideout sitting real close reading when Luz and the twins walked in, they left immediately, Anna red as a tomato.
The second Eda said body swap Lucia scooped Laia up and noped on out. It sounded fun to Lucia but for some reason she didn't feel comfortable subjecting Laia to that.
Laia and Lucia went with Eda when she talked to Bump abt enrolling them and just sat back and watched Eda clean up all her messes. Lucia was impressed.
Laia was just as excited to go to Hexside as Luz. But Lucia hated school, even magic school. She only decided to go to keep an eye on her sisters and fuck with Amelia.
Neither Laia note Lucia were interested in going to the Grudgby match. Laia stayed home and read (on the couch. She was so engrossed in her book she missed king walking out with half-transformed Eda) and Lucia went to hang out with Winona.
Laia and Anna worked together on a book for the writing contest. It won. Lucia wrote one too but it git rejected for being too graphic. It made one of the judges who read it start seeing a therapist.
All three went to the knee. Lucia went along with Eda'z crazy teaching because it seemed hysterical to her crackheaded mind, she missed the whole Slitherbeast thing bc she was off with moss in her ears, dirt over her eyes and pine needle mulch in her nose. Laia was incredibly disappointed that Anna wasn't there with the other blights. She didn't even try to stop Luz from stealing the wand bc she knew she wouldn't listen. She was just as impatient as Luz, just not rash. They figured out the ice glyph together.
Lucia chose the bard track in First Day bc she wants to be in a band. Laia couldn't choose just like Luz and got stuck in the Oracle Coven. Lucia got caught just like Luz and ended up in the detention track, Barkus was a bit more wary about her. She helped fight the basalisk I guess. Laia just stayed in class. Both Luz and Laia got to be in every track, Lucia chose only Bard, Beast Keeping and Illusion.
When Luz and co were shrunk at the carnival, Laia was off hanging out with Anna, and Lucia was doing something crackheaded with Winona. (Seriously, you could write such good fluff fics about Anna and Laia, and insane crack fics about Lucia and Winona.)
Idfk what Laia and Lucia were up top in Understanding Willow
Anna and Laia went to Grom together. They're such unassuming people that the only people who noticed were Eda and King bc they helped Laia get ready, and Amelia. Who had very mixed feelings bc 1- that's Lucia's sister, but 2- she actually kinda likes Laia and Luz.
Lucia begged Luz to let her take over as Grom queen but no dice. She ran to help too when Luz ran off but was too slow, she didn't get there until the very end of the dance.
Look, Laia is too much of a bookworm to care about sports and Lucia just thinks their stupid, so neither of them watched Luz play in Wing it like Witches.
Eda made cloaks for all 3 girls. Lucia and Laia were in the wrong year to go on the field trip to the emperor's palace. After school Laia went to the library with Anna and Lucia went to hang out with Winona. Laia and Anna fell asleep reading in Amity's secret room and Lucia and Winona lost track of time hanging out, neither got home until the next morning, and they found Luz crying on the floor.
Imagine with me, all 3 noceda girls breaking into the conformatorium to save Eda. All three wailing on Belos, Laia with a fuck ton of glyph papers, Luz with Eda's staff and some glyphs, and Lucia with a red aluminum bat covered in glyphs. They don't beat him but they do a lot more damage than just chiping his mask.
Imagine all 3 sisters agreeing silently to destroy the portal. For Eda.

The Witcher’s Companion pt.5/6
Main Summary: Geralt is summoned to Lettenhove to deal with a fiend when Jaskier is eight. Young Julian promptly decides he will do anything for the chance to travel with Geralt and have adventures outside of his stuffy castle life. (Other parts on AO3/Masterlist)
Geralt was in a mood and it was driving Jaskier mad.
They’d been travelling together for fourteen years now. Jaskier was now a renowned bard in his own right, and famous for accompanying witchers on their travels. About a decade ago Geralt had finally agreed to take Jaskier back to Kaer Morhen and he’d had the delight of meeting Geralt’s family, the wolf witchers.
That spring Jaskier had left with Eskel with promise of meeting up with Geralt again in the summer but he’d needed a change. Where Geralt stayed still in time, Jaskier was always twisting and turning like a leaf on the breeze. He loved to travel and sing and explore every part of the world, and that meant learning every witcher’s tale. Eskel had been a laugh and Jaskier had gotten some quite frankly brilliant material out of the witcher, but he’d been happy to return to Geralt in the summer. His White Wolf was a grumpy asshole at times but Jaskier was really rather taken with the man.
Geralt had been extra grumpy that summer and Jaskier liked to tell himself it was because the silver-haired witcher had been jealous that Jaskier had befriended another witcher.
By the end of spring Eskel had been a firm friend and they’d parted ways with warm hug, Eskel muttering something about getting a bard of his own. By the next winter he’d showed up with his own companion, a dwarf who was handy with both axe and scalpel.
Lambert jumped on the band wagon two years after that and returned to the keep with a blond witcher from the school of cat. It turned out the the wolf witchers, when given the chance, were not as lonesome as they first appeared.
It had just taken Jaskier to remind them that not everyone in the Continent hated them.
Some winters he still went back to Oxenfurt to teach. As much as he adored Geralt, they did get on each other’s nerves more often than not. When his witcher tolerance got too low he’d take the time to pass on the skills he’d learnt on the road. His lectures were sought after and always filled beyond capacity. He only went back every few years and almost every student wanted to attend.
The other professors hated it, but Jaskier preened like a peacock every time. It was so good to be appreciated. He let students cram into the back of the room, it didn’t bother him if they weren’t officially in his class. Knowledge was to share. He just hoped his students could pass on what they’d learnt to their peers.
This winter had been one such winter.
He’d adored the comforts of the university but his heart remained on the road, with Geralt. Geralt visited Oxenfurt in early spring and they’d been off. Jaskier had noticed that something had immediately been off with his friend. He’d known the witcher since he was a boy, and could read his expressions better than anyone else in the Continent.
Something was bothering Geralt, but the bastard refused to share. He assumed it had something to do with Cirilla, the child surprise that Geralt had all but abandoned seven years ago… but that was seven years ago. Why now?
“Been back to Cintra lately?” He asked as Geralt start to make camp, not too far from the lake. Geralt snarled and glared at him. Jaskier put his hands on his hips and rolled his eyes. “Well, pardon me for asking!”
“Well don’t.” Geralt growled.
Jaskier pulled the bedrolls from Geralt’s arms and laid them out on the ground. This was an old routine at this point, setting up camp. They usually danced around each other without getting in each other’s way, Geralt had his jobs, Jaskier had his, but today they were off their rhythm. They had been all season.
“I spent a few weeks there last winter, before I went to Oxenfurt.” Jaskier admitted quietly.
Geralt froze in the middle of the half-made camp. “You did what?”
“I went as the Viscount de Lettenhove, not Jaskier the bard. I even grew a funny beard.” Jaskier laughed as he remembered his reflection. “I wore the most extravagant hat and cape. Oh my dear witcher, you would have laughed. Calanthe didn’t recognise me at all! Mousesack did, bloody druid, but he was too amused to give me away.”
Geralt raised an eyebrow at him as he started to removed Roach’s tack. “Why?”
“Curiosity mostly.” Jaskier admitted. “We’re partners, Geralt. Your decision affects both of us.”
“Hmm.”
“Well, don’t you want to know what she’s like?” Jaskier grinned as he started to build the fire.
“You’ll tell me whether I want to know or not.” Geralt grumbled.
Jaskier watched his friend for a few minutes in silence as he finished arranging the firewood. Geralt was paler than usual with dark circles around his eyes. He really wasn’t himself. Jaskier crossed the camp and pulled the grumpy witcher into a hug.
Geralt grunted but pulled Jaskier to his chest.
“She’s brilliant, Geralt. The fire of Calanthe and the heart of Pavetta.” He said softly as he rested his chin on Geralt’s shoulder. “Calanthe won’t allow any talk of witchers in the castle, even my songs have been banned which is quite frankly rude, but Ciri is a curious child. She loves to play with fire. When I mentioned I knew a witcher, she wouldn’t let me go until she fell asleep.”
“She doesn’t know.” Geralt grunted.
Jaskier pulled back from the hug and cupped Geralt’s cheek. “No, but I told her all I could about you without Calanthe finding out.”
“I don’t understand you sometimes, bard.” Geralt scowled. “Calanthe threatened to hang us both.”
“I’d fight Calanthe over Destiny any day, dear heart.” Jaskier laughed. “Now come on, blast that firewood and I’ll go find us some dinner.”
It didn’t take Jaskier long to find a couple of rabbits to cook over the fireplace. They were shot down easily with a well place arrow. Geralt prepared them for cooking and Jaskier set about making them edible with the herbs he insisted on carrying. Geralt had never been one to appreciate good food on the road. It had taken Jaskier all of two weeks to relieve Geralt of his cooking duties when they first started travelling together.
“Jaskier.” Geralt grumbled after they’d finished eating and were staring into the flames of the fire together.
Jaskier stopped strumming his lute and looked up across the fire at Geralt. “Yes, Geralt?”
“Was she ok?”
Jaskier tilted his head and smiled at his friend before moving to sit next to him. He rested his head against Geralt’s shoulder. “Yes, she was more than ok.”
“Hmm. Good.”
“Are you ok, Geralt?” Jaskier asked quietly.
“I can’t sleep.” He mumbled. “I get dreams.”
Jaskier frowned and turned to face Geralt, his amber eyes glowing in the fire light. He looked majestic like this, powerful, inhuman but beautiful. “Dreams?”
“Green eyes, fire, death.” Geralt grumbled.
Jaskier brushed Geralt’s silver hair from his eyes and leant his forehead against the witchers. “That sounds terrible, Geralt.”
“Hmm.” Geralt agreed, his eyes closing as they relaxed into each other’s space.
“How about a lullaby?” He asked in a whisper.
Geralt pulled away slightly to glare at him. “I’m not a child, Jaskier.”
Jaskier pouted and pulled Geralt down so his head was in Jaskier’s lap. The witcher grumbled but allowed himself to be manhandled. “No, you are a grumpy witcher who needs a nap.” He threaded his hands into Geralt’s hair.
“Jaskier.” Geralt growled.
“At least allow me to try, Geralt.” He pleaded.
“Fine.”
So Jaskier sang with his finger slowly carding through Geralt’s hair as he watched the flames. He sang the same lullaby that he’d sung to Ciri as she fell asleep. The green eyes from Geralt’s dreams were Ciri’s, Jaskier had no doubt about it. Ciri had mentioned having similar dreams, with yellow cat eyes instead of green. Destiny was pulling them together. Jaskier hoped his lullaby would have the same effect on Geralt as it did with young Ciri.
Sure enough, Geralt was soon snoring gently in his lap.
Jaskier gazed fondly down at his friend. He would struggle to sleep tonight but it didn’t matter, not for one night.
______________________________
Geralt swore when Jaskier, covered in his own blood, told him about Yennefer’s intention to use the damn djinn.
He regretted ever trying to find breakfast in that fucking lake. He regretted getting annoyed at Jaskier’s wittering nonsense and accidentally casting his first wish. He’d woken up with his head still in the bard’s lap, Jaskier leaning awkwardly over him as he slept sitting up, and it had stirred up some strange feelings in Geralt's chest.
Feelings that he had been trying to ignore over the last few years.
It had left him feeling vulnerable and he’d lashed out. Jaskier’s life had almost been the price.
And now the crazy witch was about to destroy hers.
He was bitter that she’d enchanted him to do her bidding but she’d saved Jaskier’s life, he couldn’t live with himself if he didn’t repay the favour now.
“She saved your life, Jaskier. I can’t let her die.” He grumbled to his friend as he pushed him aside but Jaskier grabbed his hand.
“Gods, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m coming with you.” His face was flushed and his eyes were blazing blue fire.
“No.” Geralt argued.
“It wasn’t a question, Geralt.” Jaskier drew the silver dagger from his boots as if that would do any good against a djinn. “It was my life, not yours.”
Geralt scowled but pulled the bard inside the manor.
Yennefer was a furious inferno of barely contained chaos. The whole bedroom was filled with that scent, lilac and gooseberries. He couldn’t fight the power of her magic, the perfume, but she was dying right in front of him. He had to…
He had to wish.
“Geralt!” Jaskier’s hand was on his cheek, blue eyes shining in the chaos of the room. “The wish! You can save her!”
Geralt focussed on Jaskier’s eyes, on the sound of his voice. It pulled him through the magic haze of Yennefer’s perfumed magic. He focussed on the steady fast beat of the bard’s heart, on his soft honeyed chamomile scent.
And he wished.
He wished that they all could be free of the djinn’s power and leave this house safely.
The djinn flew up into the sky and the magic settled in the room. The perfume was still in the air, Geralt noticed that the bottle had shattered on Yennefer’s dresser.
Geralt held Jaskier’s hand tightly, keeping himself grounded, keeping Yennefer out of his mind, as the house fell apart and the ceiling collapsed above them. Yennefer screamed and gripped onto his arm. Geralt felt a surge of magic around them, a portal.
“Geralt!” Jaskier clung to him as they were pulled through.
The crumbling room disappeared. His medallion hummed against his chest as Yennefer and Jaskier both landed on top of him.
Yennefer fell unconscious. Her raven hair covering her face, but Geralt could hear her heartbeat, could feel the cool tickle of her breath against his skin.
She was alive.
“Oh fuck!” Jaskier groaned. “Are we dead?”
He peered up at Geralt. He had dust and debris in his hair, and there was still blood stains on his face and clothes but he was alive.
They were all alive.
No thanks to the djinn.
“Not dead.” Geralt leant back on the pillows.
“And the witch?” Jaskier asked as he looked to the mess of black hair.
“Also not dead.” She mumbled against Geralt’s chest and then rolled over onto her back. “I nearly had it. Why did you stop me?” She snapped.
“Oh hey now, we saved your life!” Jaskier sat up and glared at Yennefer.
“You’d be dead if it wasn’t for me, bard!” Yennefer spat back. “And I did not ask to be saved. I was fine!”
“Yeah well, you didn’t look fine.” Jaskier mumbled.
“Jaskier!” Geralt snapped. “Be nice.”
“Be nice?!” Jaskier cried. “Oh sure, I’ll be nice. I’ll be a fucking delight, as soon as she apologises for almost killing us!”
“You didn’t have to come with me.” Geralt noted.
Jaskier scoffed. “Fourteen years, Geralt. You never learn. I will always follow you.”
“Well isn’t that sweet.” Yennefer drawled. “Well, I’d love to stay but really, I don’t want to.”
“Yennefer!” Geralt reached out for her arm before she portalled away.
“What?” She snapped.
He gave her, what he hoped was a grateful smile. “Thank you, for everything.”
“You owe me, witcher.” She nodded and then disappeared.
Jaskier fell back dramatically on the pillow with a sigh. “Well this will all make a rather spectacular ballad.” He yawned.
“It was a shit show.” Geralt raised his eyebrow at his friend.
“Hmm… yeah but magic, sexy witches, sexy bards and sexy witchers. Best ballad ever.” Jaskier mumbled as his eyes fluttered shut.
Geralt huffed but it was too late.
Jaskier was asleep.

fruit snacks & wonder bread | lee chan
focus: dino
words: 1.7k
genre: stranger things au / high school au / dnd au? / fall themes
description: More stranger things au for the beautiful fall season! This is a continuation/addition to the fic with Jeonghan from week one, but can be read independently. Just piling onto this svt x stranger things universe hoping things make sense. Anyways made it in the nick of time for week two of #caratrevival, whew! This week’s themes were Dino and the lyric « Here’s the baton, man ». Enjoy, and let me know what you think!
(Quick note, I went a bit ham with the dnd game at first because I miss playing, but I tried to edit the scene to be as simple as possible so hopefully it’s not too confusing for non-dnd players. To all dnd players, BSS are all bards and that’s canon.)
____________________
“Don’t forget to say your thank you-s and excuse me-s!”
“Yup!”
“And remember to wash your hands and clean up after yourself!”
“Yup!”
“And also share your snacks with everyone!”
“I know, I know,” Dino swept an armful of fruit snacks off the kitchen counter into his backpack as his mother stood beside him with hands on her hips. “And I know, don’t be too mean to Seungkwan, yup, got to go now!”
Dino rushed out of the kitchen to the back yard and tugged on the door handle to the shed. His bike was leaning against the wall in its usual dusty corner beside the rakes. After retrieving his bike, Dino hurriedly waved to his mother seeing him off through the parlor window. As he reached the line where the grass met the asphalt of the driveway, the garage door grumbled open to his test.
The dingy Ford Station Wagon thrummed to life and slowly backed out into the sunlight. The windows rolled down, and the scream of the electric guitar paired with the bass and snare heartbeat of Prince’s When Doves Cry flew out into the air. Dino’s older brother Jihoon glanced at him in passing as he reversed down the driveway. His friend Wonwoo sat in the passenger seat and nodded at Dino in greeting.
“Where you headed?” Jihoon asked him nonchalantly while twisting around to see if he was going to hit any trees.
“To Seokmin’s. We’re starting up a new campaign.” Dino kept pace next to the car as it crawled down the driveway.
“You guys still play Dungeons and Dragons?” Wonwoo pushed his glasses up. Dino could feel the gentle mockery in Wonwoo’s piercing gaze.
“Yeah, we do. What bingo session are you senior citizens off to join?”
Jihoon snickered and shook a finger at his younger sibling. “What a smartass. Who’s DMing this time? Your campaign sucked last time, hope it’s not you again.”
“You have poor taste in adventure. And Seokmin is.”
“Good. Well have fun, then. Remind Soonyoung that we’re meeting later. And tell him not to be late again.”
“Where are you guys meeting?”
“He’ll know.”
“Come on. Tell me.”
“Bye Channie.” Jihoon gave Dino a curt look before changing gears and turning onto the road. Dino bugged his eyes out at him in retribution.
“See ya, Dino.” Wonwoo raised a hand in goodbye.
They think they’re so cool. Dino smirked internally as the two drove away in the ugly wood-paneled car. Reaching into his jacket pocket, he pulled out his headphones, attached it to his walkman, and pressed play. The falsetto of Michael Jackson’s Beat It filled his ears. Hopping onto his bike, Dino pedaled furiously in the opposite direction.
Seokmin’s house, only a short 15 minute ride away, was located in a general northern direction from Dino’s home. In between were lengths of forest and hills, and driveways dotted here and there. The schools and hubs of Plediestown were on the other side of town, so this part of the woods was quiet, with only families and farms going about their lives like happy smurfs.
The autumn air had chilled the air and shriveled leaves were sprinkled across the grounds. Another, more attentive person would have better appreciated the gradients of red, burgundy, pumpkin orange, and mustard yellow foliage of the forests around them. The neighborhood contained snapshots comparable to Bob Ross landscapes. But to Dino, this was nothing new to admire, it was just home.
Like Nuest Court, where the houses of the cul-de-sac were clustered together at the bottom of a large hill with the massively old oak tree. It wasn’t just a scenic view, it was where all the kids in the neighborhood went sledding in the winter and played manhunt amongst the fireflies until the summer sun disappeared.
Dino zoomed past the hill, the oak tree standing majestically as ever. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the movement of a figure strolling under the tree.
Is that Minki?? What was he doing here?
Dino blinked furiously. It had been years since the boys of Nuest Court had left town together to follow their dreams in the city. If one of them had returned home, it would have been the buzz of the town. Turning his head, Dino squinted at the lean figure . He had shoulder length black hair, loose-fitting white shirt, thin—honk. HONK.
Whoa.
Dino screeched to a halt and twisted his bike sharply towards the curb. A car drove around Dino, and he saw Seungcheol giving him a happy wave in his sky-blue marching band uniform through the driver’s window. Even with the windows closed, Dino could hear the guy giggle his ridiculous giggle as he passed.
Dino turned his gaze back towards the oak tree atop the Nuest Court hill, but the figure was no longer there.
Oh well. Dino merely shrugged and went along his way. He’d hear about any new visitors sooner or later in this small town.
By the time Dino was pedaling up the driveway to Seokmin’s house, he had all but forgotten about the possible Minki appearance. The garage door rose as he neared the house, and Jeonghan appeared, donning the same ridiculous blue uniform as Seungcheol. Dino threw his bike onto the grass beside their perennial bushes and rushed into the garage, swinging his backpack at Jeonghan.
“Hey Jeonghan. Nice outfit.”
The older boy dodged his attack and called after him, but Dino was already two steps in the house and purposely ignoring him—he hated being babied by Jeonghan. The warmth of the house tickled his cheeks, and he lightly plodded down the familiar stairs into the even toastier basement.
“Eyy Dino!” Hoshi yelled, jumping up from his chair. Vernon raised a hand in greeting. Mingyu and Seungkwan were in the midst of an argument over who’s dice were prettier, so Dino plopped down next to Seokmin, who gave him his trademark sunshine smile and high-fived him.
It wasn’t long before the group huddled seriously around the small table and quickly descended into the magical realm of Seokmin’s imagination.
“The party leaves the inn well stuffed and equipped with shiny new weapons.” Seokmin’s eyes widened dramatically as he narrated the story and built the world up around them. “You all head towards the edge of the forest where the old wizard said the gate to the Noir dimension is located. There is no sign of any life, but there is a stream of gurgling water and trees lined the shoreline. In the shadows of the woods, three—”
“Can I attack the stream?” Hoshi interrupted.
“Why in the world do you want to attack the stream, Soonyoung? It’s not going to do anything,” Seungkwan rolled his eyes and sighed in frustration.
Hoshi stood with one foot on his stool, his chest puffed out, and his imaginary sword in his right hand pointed towards the ceiling. “Because I can!” he laughed mightily.
Mingyu groaned and swiped his hand through his hair impatiently. “We’re not even going to get to start the quest today,” he muttered.
Vernon smiled and shook his head, used to Hoshi’s goofy antics. Seokmin laughed heartily, clearly enjoying this turn of events.
“Ok! Roll to attack!” Seokmin declared.
Hoshi took his d20 and dropped it into the center of the table. “Oyyyy, Nat 20!!!”
“You successfully attack the river!” Seokmin screamed. “Hoshi slices at the water, and you can hear a soft gurgling sound eerily similar to the word ‘ouch’.” Hoshi religiously followed the words of the Dungeon Master and mimed poking his sword at an imaginary river.
Mingyu doubled over cackling and managed to fall off his chair. Vernon was shaking Seungkwan’s shoulder in glee as they both guffawed incredulously.
“What a waste of a nat 20!” Dino exclaimed, but he was struggling to breath from his own shrieks of laughter, too.
Seokmin suddenly slammed his hand on the table, startling everyone into silence. His face grew serious and he looked at everyone with a sinister glare. “Little did you know, the water began to shine and part. A glowing ring with a dark center appeared out of the water and a freezing wind blew out of the circle. Roll for investigation check.”
They each rolled in turn and Hoshi—and only Hoshi—failed the check.
“Alright,” Seokmin rubbed his hands together mischievously. “Everyone but Soonyoung realizes this is a portal to another world. You know, probably the portal you guys were looking for. Soonyoung, on the other hand, thinks it’s a really cool blow dryer and sticks his face through the glowing portal.”
“What do you see in there, Soonyoung?” Dino asked, only half serious.
“I don’t know. It’s really dark, hahaha.”
“Do we have a torch or something?” Mingyu asked.
“I got one. Here’s the baton, man,” Vernon pretends to hand Hoshi the imaginary light source.
“Suddenly, you hear a terrifying ROAR!!!” Seokmin howled at the top of his lungs. Seungkwan hugged Dino in fright.
“And with that, Soonyoung is pulled into the other dimension and the portal closes.” Seokmin sits back down and smiles sweetly at the party, waiting for them to react. They all just stared back at him in shock.
“Dude!” Hoshi broke the silence. “Am I dead?”
“Nope!” Seokmin stated simply and chuckled a bit embarrassedly. “I just didn’t plan for you guys to discover the portal this early, so I needed to get you guys back on track first.”
“But I’m stuck in the other dimension now? Separated from the party???” Hoshi squished his cheeks in despair.
“Don’t worry. You’re fine.” Seokmin laughed and patted his friend’s back reassuringly. “You guys wanna take a quick snack break?”
“Yes please.” Mingyu stood up immediately. Dino peeled Seungkwan off of him and poured his hoard of fruit snacks onto the table.
Hoshi slumped into the sofa dejectedly. “Guess I’ll just sit here and watch you guys play then.”
“Oh right, Soonyoung!” Dino called out as he climbed the stairs to get some more food. “Jihoon said to not forget to meet him and Wonwoo for something. He didn’t tell me where, though. Just make sure to be very late.”
Dino reached the top of the stairs and turned towards the kitchen.
What the—”HEY!” Dino shouted. The rest of the boys clambered up the stairs and peered into the doorway behind him.
An unfamiliar boy stood beside the counter stuffing his face with wonder bread and the leftover chili. He was dressed in a wrinkled white hospital gown that reached mid-thigh and thin pajama pants with dirt smudges all over. His long jet-black hair hung limply, and as he reached his hand out to grab another piece of bread, the kitchen light shined down onto his thin forearm. Along the inside of his wrist, the inky numbers stood out against his pale skin: 008.
Dino gasped.
“You’re the Minki impersonator!”

Edmund Ravenwood’s Backstory
Thank you all for being so patient!! I finally have the comprehensive story of my DnD character Edmund’s life, past experiences, how he met his patron The Winter Prince and right up until he first ran into our dnd party! I’ve also included a lot of of never before seen secret artwork below the cut!
Some of the backstory content discussed in this has not been shared with the other players in the campaign, so if anyone of you are reading this (Selby I’m looking at you) avert your eyes!!
EDMUND’S EARLY YEARS
For the full family history of the Ravenwoods, I only know as much as Edmund knows which is not a lot (My DM holds the secrets). As far as it concerns to Edmund, the Ravenwood family have always been renowned for their arcane abilities, holding a strong Elven lineage that dates back centuries. His father, Rykar Ravenwood used be high ranking officer in the Queen’s army before she died and now holds the position of Kings representative for the state of Vela, in the continent of Lunaris.
During the time of his military service, Edmund’s father left his family to fight for a few years and when he returned, he brought back his illegitimate Half Elven son, much to the dismay of his wife, Selphine Ravenwood. The identity of Edmund’s birth mother is unknown to him (Only my DM knows) and absolutely everyone refuses to talk about it, the only thing he can assume was that she was human. Although not knowing has left Edmund feeling uneasy at times, in order to fit in with his family, he’s never dwelt on who she could be or had any strong desire to seek her out.
Edmund is the middle child of Ravenwood's 5 children. The oldest son, Ambrose is a respected professor at Hansen’s Academy of the Arcane, doing his best to keep himself composed and proper despite Edmund giving him constant headaches. The oldest daughter Leona is the commander of Vela’s current military force, she has a particularly cold and serious attitude towards most things. Corda, who is slightly younger than Edmund, takes after her mother and is a young socialite with an interest in fashion. She hides a particularly cruel personality behind her sweet smile. Erinaya is the youngest of five children, and has always been the one sibling that openly cares for Edmund. She has outward adoration for him and he would often take her out for adventures and play with her throughout their childhood together.
His parents were distant in his upbringing, his father would occasionally show him slight signs of warmth when the rest of the family was not around. However, his mother held a particular disdain for him as Edmund was a walking, talking reminder of her husband’s infidelity.
Another constant reminder that Edmund did not fit into his family was the fact that he was completely magically inept. Despite countless tutors, he was unable to do any kind of magic properly, either the spells would not work at all or things had a habit of exploding. The crueler members of his family (His mother and Corda) would often say that it’s the filthy blood in his veins (the human half) that stops the magic from coming to him.
While spending most of his time being raised by the family’s hired nanny Mary, he developed a similar accent to her own, one less posh than the rest of his family which suited him just fine when people commented on it (Eddie’s accent more is East London/Cockney while his family is closer to am upper class English accent. I used to be really bad at speaking in his accent but I’ve gotten a lot better with practice and now I can slip into it no problem!).
Most of Edmund’s early years were spent playing out in the woods at the back of the Ravenwood's grand estate. It was there that Edmund met his first friends, two human twins by the names of Rosa and Elijah and despite how his parents discouraged him from associating with the common folk, it only urged him to seek them out more. His friends started calling him Eddie, and the nickname stuck as his little band of friends grew over the years.
Some of his new mates included a chilled out blue Tiefling called Hex, who is the go to guy to get ahold of all your illegal substances (He was also the person that Edmund lost his virginity to in their teenage years), a Half Orc named Zarak (He became the designated Mum friend of the group) and a Gnome girl with a bold personality called Kiplin.
AURIGA & APOLLO
By the time Eddie was a teenager, rebellion was deeply rooted into his personality. The next state over from Vela is a place called Auriga, it's known for its loud music and wild parties. Using the family’s teleportation circle, Eddie and his mates would nearly always sneak off for nights out and spring break holidays.
A lot of those years spent partying in Auriga are still very hazy to Eddie to this day, the copious amounts of alcohol, party drugs and occasional hook ups have all blurred together. However, things took a turn when on one of these wild nights out, his friends dragged him to a concert for a band of bards known as Killer Korpse.
Watching the lead singer perform, Eddie was absolutely starstruck and fell in love on the spot. Apollo was everything Eddie dreamed of, a rebellious bard full of magic, singing about not giving a shit and as an added bonus he was a human which his parents would hate. Everything to do with Apollo was a world away from his uptight family and a reputation he has no hopes of living up to.
After stalking the band for several weeks, hanging outside the backstage door and hovering in the taverns they were staying in, surprisingly Apollo actually took notice of him. One night when Eddie was hopelessly loitering near backstage, the door opened and instead of the usual guard telling him to fuck off, Apollo stepped out and right over to him and Eddie stared up at him completely lost for words.
Apollo thought the stalker kid was really funny so he decided to bring him backstage to meet the rest of the band. After Eddie had downed a bunch of drinks he started oversharing about how much he hated his family and it was then that it clicked for Apollo who Eddie actually is, since the Ravenwoods are very well known. When Eddie started a very drunk confession of love to Apollo, he decided he was going to have a lot of fun with this and a few minutes later Apollo had Eddie pinned to the couch in a very drunk make out session.
After that Eddie was caught in a whirlwind of things and over the spring break he was brought along with the band for their tour. He was having the best time of his life, half in a daze because he couldn’t believe he was spending nearly every night in bed with Apollo, the rebellious bard of his dreams.
Apollo and his bandmates were pretty much just assholes, the fame had really gone to their heads and they would get away with doing pretty much whatever they wanted. Eddie being naive and being in his own happy world never noticed Apollo sneaking off to hook up with other groupies or making fun of Eddie behind his back. Half the time the band was high on a drug known as Sharp Sugar that’s often used to enhance your senses (AKA gives you an advantage on all ability checks) however the come down can be brutal on the body and makes the substance highly addictive. Some of the shine for his relationship with Apollo started to wear off after having some very scary encounters with a drug deprived Apollo.
Even though Apollo was a dick a lot of the time, there are also some moments where he could be incredibly sweet, and parts where he would share stories of his own life with Eddie and the sincerity of it made Eddie fall deeper and deeper into devotion.
On the night that Killer Korpse finished their last show for the spring break in Auriga and just before they were about to travel to the capital city to tour again, there was a big party to celebrate. While Apollo was surrounded by his drunk and very high friends, Eddie approached him with all his courage and told him that he had decided he wasn’t going back to his family and he was going to run away with the band so that they could be together.
Apollo stood there looking at him seriously for a moment before he started to laugh. He was howling with laughter, clutching onto his friends, his eyes snapped back up to Eddie saying “You can't be serious, look this whole thing was fun while it lasted but everyones heard about the black sheep of the Ravenwood’s now and I'm bored of this. Its over Eddie”
Absolutely humiliated in front of Apollo’s entire backstage entourage, in a daze Eddie ran away as fast as he could and he slowly made his way home to very angry parents.
HANSEN’S & HUDIC
By the time Eddie returned to Vela the word had gotten out that the bastard son of the Ravenwood’s was sleeping around with a famous bard.
In order to quickly shut this rumour down and to get Eddie out of the spotlight, his parents paid to send him to Hansen’s school of the Arcane, under the assumption that he would be watched over by his brother Ambrose (much to his dismay), who is currently working there as a professor. They were hoping that with the correct teaching, Eddie might be able to hone some kind of magical ability.
There are two ways you can get into the academy, you can either take an extremely difficult exam and practical test, or if you have enough money you can pay your way in. Luckily for Edmund’s family, money is not an issue.
Not being able to use magic while surrounded by a school for talented magic users is not fun. Especially when everyone knows that you didn’t earn your place and your parents paid for you to be there. And it sucks even more if you don’t actually want to be there in the first place but for Eddie he thought that this would be a wonderful opportunity to stir up some shit.
Edmund was stuck sharing a dorm room with a human boy called Ozwald. Oz wasn’t too bad, he was one of the only people who didn’t actually look down on Eddie because of his family or lack of magical ability. He was also very patient for putting up with all the trouble Eddie was seeming to find himself in.
It was in his numerous detentions that Eddie met his new band of friends. A feisty fire Genasi sorcerer called Flint who had a habit of setting things on fire when he lost his temper. Miriam Makovski, a human wizard who just wanted to hit things with a sword and not use magic like her wizard family insisted. Rowan Buckley, a sweet Firbolg druid who was only in detention because the teacher had forgotten he was still in the classroom organising the books. And last but not least his right hand man and partner in crime Theron Finchley, A Halfling wild magic sorcerer who enjoyed stirring up shit just as much as Eddie did. The group managed to get up to all sorts of mischief, smuggling in drugs and alcohol with the help of Hex, pranking teachers, and messing with the uptight students.
Heres a drawing I did of Rowan because I love him and I would die for him.
Once Edmund was starting to finish off his second year the Academy, his lack of magical ability was starting to get to him, especially seeing the shining talent in his friends, even if they didn’t really care about their own magic much at all. Doing some research for the first time in his life, Edmund went down the path of researching powerful beings that could give power to those who seek it. Thinking that perhaps this could be his opportunity to have the magic that he was so jealous of. Sneaking into the restricted section, Edmund came across a book describing a resurrection ritual involving an old god of Betrayal known as Hudic.
Gathering the supplies for the ritual was tough, some of the ingredients being very hard to get ahold of (including bones of an innocent person and other strange items) and over the next few months, Edmund worked on drawing up the summoning sigil under the rug in his shared dorm room, hiding it whenever ozwald returned from his studies.
On one cold evening, as soon as Ozwald left to study in the library, Edmund began the ritual, pouring his own blood into the center of the sigil and chanting the words from the book. As the shadows started to collect around his feet and a grotesque figure began to pull himself from the inscriptions on the ground, it was then that Ozwald walked back into the dorm room having forgotten something.
At that point everything went wrong, the demon grabbed Ozwald and dragged him back into the shadows with him, blood covering the floor, and the screams of both Oz and Eddie echoing throughout the halls. There was a huge scene students began to run out of bed, Professors running into the dorm room to stop students looking in. And before anyone could grab him, Eddie used the rest of his strength to climb out of the window. And for the second time in his life, Eddie ran away.
THE WINTER PRINCE
With nothing but the clothes on his back, Eddie blindly walked south. Since the academy was in the southernmost part of Vela, it wasn’t long before he started nearing the border for the state known as Crusis, a cold and unforgiving territory bordered by an endless winter wasteland. Eddie, snuck through the border patrols by pretending to be one of the hundreds of refugees making their way south, all displaced from the war with the fire giants raging across the South East of Lunaris.
Huddling for warmth in barns and gathering scraps of food where he could, he overheard a group of travellers discussing a hidden library out in the winter wastelands. He had nothing else to live for? Perhaps a magic library would have the solution to his problems. So with what little supplies he could gather, he set out in search of a Library, in hopes that he could find another book that could help him reverse what he had done.
The wastelands are absolutely brutal, many experienced travellers die out in the cold, so for Edmund he was barely hanging in there. At one point he even had a run in with a polar bear and fought to avoid a handful of white dragon wyrmlings. He wandered the endless snow fields until his legs gave out, and the snow was too strong.
Edmund lay in the snow, looking up at the greying sky, frostbite already starting to nip at the exposed skin on his face. It was in this lucid state of consciousness that he barely registered a figure standing over him, he could have sworn that he was being lifted, and the last thing he remembered was strong arms carrying him before he passed out.
It was the press of something to his lips that woke him up. Delirious, naked and covered in blankets of fur, Eddie gazed up at the face of the most ethereal looking man he had ever seen. Long white hair, pale skin, long elven ears and ice seeming to glitter across his features. At his lips, the man was forcefully pushing berries and fruits into his mouth, looking annoyed and telling him to eat or he would die.
After a few days, when Edmund was mostly recovered, he took note that he had been brought to some kind of palace seemingly sculpted of ice and stone. The man introduced himself simply as The Winter Prince. He explained that he had been banished from his home in the Winter Court of the Feywild and confined to the mortal realm and specifically this small area of wasteland in Crusis. Ignoring any of Edmund’s questions about why he was banished, The Winter Prince proposed a deal to him.
“I’m trapped here in my castle, I can’t go anywhere or in fact do anything, so if you are able go out and look for someway to release me from this banishment, in return I will grant you access to my power, but you’ll also have to lend me your eyes and your body on occasion.”
By accepting the deal The Winter Prince would be able to look through his eyes and take control of Eddie’s body when he sees fit. (As a player I have to roll a wisdom save and if I fail then my DM takes control of Eddie’s actions as the Winter Prince. In the beginning of the campaign the other players had no idea what was happening, and no idea who my patron was at all. This has already lead to some AMAZING in game interactions)
With promise of magic and nothing else left to lose, Eddie agreed and The Winter Prince stepped forward and sealed the contract with a kiss on the forehead. After spending the next few hours running around in the snow, throwing Eldritch blasts into the sky and wooping for joy the two of them prepared for Eddie’s journey back into civilisation.
In the throne room lined by a large mirror made of glass, Eddie was shocked to see a vision of his reflection standing motionlessly, behind the prince’s throne. The prince explained that it was another added sign of their contract (Eddie now does not have a reflection and doesn’t show up in mirrors)
The Winter Prince is always very graceful and elegant in his movements and he usually speaks with a relaxed tone, like many of the fey he is cold and cruel but has somewhat of a mischievous edge. Eddie was reminded of the cruel twist of his personality with how The Winter Prince reminded him that the only reason he was chosen was because all the other people that he had found in the snow were already long dead.
With a new mission in mind, a resistance to the cold and new power running through his veins, Edmund set out to the capital city of Naos to earn some money and start looking for ways to release The Winter Prince’s banishment. And of course he wouldn’t throw away the opportunity to test out his new found magical abilities along the way, perhaps he would even try to unravel some of the mysteries behind his patron’s cold heart.
Thank you so much for reading! If you have any questions please let me know because I’d be more than happy to answer!

Today we remember the passing of Adam Yauch(MCA) who Died: May 4, 2012 in Manhattan, New York
Adam Nathaniel Yauch (August 5, 1964 – May 4, 2012), better known under the stage name MCA, was an American rapper, bass player, filmmaker and a founding member of the hip hop group Beastie Boys.
Yauch founded Oscilloscope Laboratories, an independent film production and distribution company based in New York City. As a Buddhist, he was involved in the Tibetan independence movement and organized the Tibetan Freedom Concert. He died in 2012 from parotid cancer.
Born in Brooklyn, New York City, Yauch was an only child. His father was an architect, and his mother was a social worker. Yauch's mother was Jewish, and his father Catholic but he had a non-religious upbringing in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn.
Yauch attended Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn's Midwood neighborhood. In high school, he taught himself to play the bass guitar and formed Beastie Boys with John Berry, Kate Schellenbach, and Michael Diamond. They played their first show—while still a hardcore punk band in the vein of Reagan Youth—on his 17th birthday. He attended Bard College for two years before dropping out.
Beastie Boys, a hip-hop trio, released their first album Licensed to Ill on Def Jam Records when Yauch was 22. He directed many of Beastie Boys' music videos, often under the pseudonym Nathaniel Hörnblowér.
In 2002, Yauch constructed a recording studio in New York City called Oscilloscope Laboratories. He began an independent film distributing company called Oscilloscope Pictures. He directed the 2006 Beastie Boys concert film, Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That!, although in the DVD extras for the film, the title character in "A Day in the Life of Nathanial Hörnblowér" is played by David Cross.
Beastie Boys had sold 40 million records worldwide by 2010. In April 2012, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Yauch was inducted in absentia due to his illness. His bandmates paid tribute to him; a letter from Yauch was read to the audience.
In 2011, Yauch received the Charles Flint Kellogg Award in Arts and Letters from Bard College, the college he attended for two years. The award is "given in recognition of a significant contribution to the American artistic or literary heritage".
He directed the 2008 film Gunnin' For That #1 Spot about eight high school basketball prospects at the Boost Mobile Elite 24 Hoops Classic at Rucker Park in Harlem, New York City. Yauch produced Build a Nation, the comeback album from hardcore/punk band Bad Brains. In addition, Oscilloscope Laboratories also distributed Kelly Reichardt's Wendy and Lucy (2008) and Oren Moverman's The Messenger (2009).
Yauch was a practicing Buddhist. He became an important voice in the Tibetan independence movement, creating the Milarepa Fund, a nonprofit organization devoted to Tibetan independence and organized several benefit concerts to support the cause, including the Tibetan Freedom Concert.
In the 1994 Beastie Boys single "Sure Shot", he rapped the verse: "I want to say a little something that’s long overdue / The disrespect to women has to got to be through / To all the mothers and sisters and the wives and friends / I want to offer my love and respect till the end".
In 1995, while attending a speech by the Dalai Lama at Harvard University, he met his wife, Tibetan American Dechen Wangdu. They married in 1998 and had a daughter, Tenzin Losel, the same year.
In 1998, during the MTV Video Music Awards, when receiving the Video Vanguard Award, Yauch condemned America's wars in Muslim countries and prejudice against Muslims and Arabs. Artist Cihan Kaan wrote an obituary in Al Jazeera that Yauch was "Muslim Americans' hero, and America's personal Jewish Gandhi".
In 2009, Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous parotid gland and lymph node. He underwent surgery and radiation therapy, delaying the release of Hot Sauce Committee Part Two and the subsequent tour. He was unable to appear in music videos for the album. Yauch became a vegan on the recommendation of his doctors. At the time, Yauch described the cancer as "very treatable".
Yauch died at age 47 on May 4, 2012. Upon his death, fellow musicians and artists paid tribute. Russell Simmons of Def Jam Records said that Yauch "was incredibly sweet and the most sensitive artist, whom I loved dearly". Ben Stiller tweeted that Yauch "stood for integrity as an artist". Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam said that Yauch was "a crazy talent whose contributions with his band were inspirational and consistently ground breaking". Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke wrote: "We looked up to the Beastie Boys a lot when we were starting out and how they maintained artistic control making wicked records but still were on a major label and the Tibetan Freedom Concerts they organized had a very big influence on me personally and the way Adam conducted himself and dealt with it all impressed me a lot. He was a mellow and smart guy. May he rest in peace." Eminem said in an interview, "Adam Yauch brought a lot of positivity into the world and I think it's obvious to anyone how big of an influence the Beastie Boys were on me and so many others." Three days after Yauch's death, bandmate Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz posted a note on the Beastie Boys' Tumblr page about it, acknowledging the pain of losing Yauch and his admiration for him.

Where Time Takes Us
Destination - Part 1
- - - - - - - - - -
Watch the home while she is off to war
The Slumber King versus the rearing boar
Awake, arise, do not be blind
To tales and destinies entwined
In the world we said that we would leave behind
— excerpt from folk song, The World Behind, writer unknown, dated back to the Era of Myth
- - - - - - - - - -
6 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days before the Hyrule Castle Slaughter, the Akkala Citadel Massacre, the slaying of the Champions, the death of the hero, and the rise of Calamity Ganon...
Her job ends on doomsday.
She should be working, and truly she wanted to, but circumstances had led her to walk towards the echoing laughter.
Already trying to prepare the quip she would throw back at them, (as undoubtedly they’d complain about her being late again), the researcher weaved through the familiar roads of West Castle Town. Most of the houses were dark, with the only light source coming from the occasional flickering lantern, and the pale complexion of the midnight moon. Needless to say, it made the warm glow of The Adequate’s Tavern stand out all the more as she approached.
Another roar of laughter and shouts escaped from an open window on the south side of the pub. The bags under her eyes curved with her smile as she recognized one of the voices. She absentmindedly traced her fingers along the outer walls of the tavern as she walked, loose chips of faded blue paint falling to the pavement below. The wooden sign above the door creaked with its askew weight. The Adequate’s Tavern was printed in bold, blue letters atop a faded yellow outline. The missing e’s and t’s gave evidence to the building’s true quality.
Pushing open the door, the researcher was met with a swirl of familiar scents, ranging from alcohol, apples, bread, and leather, along with a smokiness coming from the fireplace near the back of the bar.
Closing the door behind her, she walked through the entrance, passing under a wooden overhang, and alongside a long, stone-slated bar counter. She overheard a conversation between the barkeep and a waiter.
“Yes, they’re here again, so get out there already!”
“The scientists?” the waiter asked.
The man started shoving her towards the storage door behind the bar. “Yes, yes, now hurry up and stock up on that apple cider. I’ve already turned four full pitchers from the three of them, and the fourth is no doubt on the way. We can turn a bigger profit from those kids than any random alcoholic that stumbles in here tonight!”
The waiter disappeared into the back, and the barkeep was left muttering by the counter. Chuckling to herself, the researcher moved away, starting to search for the scientists in question. Other than a single, beige wall that separated the edge of the bar with a support beam in the middle of the room, the pub was very open and lively. Square and circular tables were littered across the floor in mismatched patterns, ranging from oak brown to birch white. Clearly, aesthetic was not the centerpoint of the place.
She walked about the pub, scanning the faces of the men and women alike who crowded by the booths and tables. The tavern mainly housed a sea of Hylians, who let out the occasional drunken laugh, or hearty chuckle. It was a miracle she could hear her thoughts at all, as the air was rich with the sound of clattering dishware and the patter of dancing feet, as in a small corner to the left was a semi-circle stage housing a small band. A Hylian man with umber dark skin, much like her own, blew away at a Lurelin-made, seashell harmonica. To his left, a blonde woman extended her arm in quick and elegant strokes with a bow and fiddle. Two others struck away on small drums and bells, and the playful gig they performed had gotten several people up from their feet to dance for Hylia knows how long. The music wasn’t terrible, but she had heard better, from a certain Sheikah in particular...
As if fate had read her thoughts, she finally caught sight of her friends.
It hindsight, it was easy enough to expect the bard to be at the table closest to the stage. Yet, it was probably the three heads of cloud white, Sheikah hair that gave them away the quickest. A young teenage boy sat across a square table from two other Sheikah, a boy and a girl. He was looking at nothing in particular, as he plucked away at his lute, presumably tuning it. Wrapped around his head was a small cluster of green wooden beads, woven with brown string. They dotted like a line of stars in his fluffy, white hair, alternating between pine and sage shades. The knot tying the strings and beads around his head hung loosely like vines just by his right ear. He was just asking to look like a starstruck, homeless traveler, if it weren’t for the bright red cape pinned across his shoulders. The golden, Hyrulean emblem holding the crimson cloth together signified his status as an important worker of the palace. Although, no one would be surprised that this thin, skinny teenager was a bard and court poet, and not a royal knight.
Suddenly, the bard looked up and met her gaze, a pair of warm, red eyes catching the light of familiarity. He patted the empty seat next to him and said something to the other two Sheikah in front of him. One of them looked back, a young man with storm wild hair that seemed to part like lightning. He had a beige, long sleeve coat over a red tunic, as was the classic Sheikah style. However, the style of his white jacket told of his rank as a scientist. With chocolate eyes and a contagious grin, he nudged the girl next to him and fake coughed.
The young woman wore roughly the same outfit, although she had a navy blue skirt and boots compared to the other guy’s black pants and shoes. Her eyes were also red, albeit, with a more striking scarlet color, compared to the other boy’s warmer wine shade. Looking back, she adjusted her bright, Sheikah red, round, sparkly, diamond decorated glasses, complete with white accents that matched her hair. It was pulled in a messy bun, a hairstyle that her close friends knew was less for looks, and more for practical purposes, as supposedly, “the stupid strands always find ways to bother my eyes. No, stop, I don’t need a comb! My eyeballs are just sensitive, okay?”
Pivoting past a waiter, the researcher finally moved closer to the trio, brushing her curly dark hair above her shoulders as she prepared for the sarcasm to begin.
The stormy eyed scientist spoke first.
“Purah, Purah! Is that...a ghost I see? It looks like Adello, but I feel like I haven’t seen her in a century, I surely thought her dead! Am I being…haunted?”
Purah turned in her seat and gave a fake gasp. She adjusted her red rimmed glasses at the sight of her. “You’re right, Robbie! I’ve heard about these spirits. They only come at midnight under a full moon, and they appear when you have friends that don’t know how to time manage and haunt you by coming to your birthday party with their terrible fashion sense 45 minutes late!” She clapped her hands along with the syllables of “45 minutes” to let her point be known.
Robbie awed at Adello in sarcastic wonder, and the boy across from him exhaled out of his nose with a smile.
Adello put a hand on her hip. “Save your breath, I was just working a bit overtime on the Divine Beast sketches. You know, work? For the jobs that we all have? So we can pay our taxes and shit? Unfortunately, not all of us have fancy salaries Mrs. Royal Scientist.”
Purah turned to Robbie, pulling down her glasses and looking at him sternly. “See, this is another trait of these kinds of spirits. They’re cursed to only say excuses for eternity.”
He shook his head. “Coupled with the fact that their fashion only ever consists of one color? Truly, a terrible fate for a ghost indeed.”
Adello narrowed her eyes. Smoothing out her juniper colored tunic, she said, “Okay, first off, green is a great color on me, it pairs well with my skin tone. You’re both just blind, no wonder you need glasses.” Purah put a hand on her chest dramatically, but she continued. “Plus, I’d really rather not get fired since that ceremony thing with those Champions is tomorrow and, as you all know, I just got that promotion.”
The researcher propped a black leather boot up on the empty chair by the table, flipping her jet black hair dramatically. “How does it feel to be in the presence of someone with an actual on-the-field career?”
Purah stuck out her tongue, and Robbie cupped his hands and booed. However, the boy sitting on the other side of the fourseated table gave a celebratory strum of his lute, giving Adello’s pose a bright background flourish with a few upbeat chords.
She winked. “Thank you Zimiri, at least someone can recognize skill.” The bard gave a little bow with his head, grinning. “A few chords is all it takes to enhance a dramatic, late night entrance.”
Adello chuckled, finally sitting down in the empty seat beside him. The old oaken chair and floor creaked under the new weight. Robbie let out a huff.
“You kids need to learn to respect your elders.” He announced the word “respect” with the tip of his tongue. The researcher rolled her eyes.
“Ah yes, a whole one year gap between us. What astounding age and experience that these elders emit.” She gestured at Robbie and Purah with a sweep of her arm.
“Uh, excuse me, but I believe in my case it’s now double that. A whole two years, my dear, naive child. For as of 4 hours ago, I now emit the knowledge of an existence spanning two decades!” Now it was his turn to pose dramatically, pointing towards the ceiling.
Everyone at the table groaned, turning to occupy themselves with something else. Purah started writing in her journal which she pulled out from her satchel, and Adello started to become very interested with the ceiling. Zimiri continued to pluck nothings on his lute.
Robbies crossed his arms, his white long sleeves folding across the Sheikah red shirt underneath. “Oh I see! So when Adello brags, she gets a musical accompaniment, but when I do it, it’s suddenly annoying and embarrassing?”
Adello smirked to herself, and answered, “Yep, that’s how it goes!”
“Alright, you don’t get to speak, Miss I-don’t-know-how-to-be-punctuation!”
Purah promptly smacked Robbie over the head with a pen.
“Hey! W—”
“The word is punctual, you idiot.”
Robbie slumped his shoulders and made a face. He tapped his thumb and fingers together, mimicking the opening and closing of a mouth while he muttered mockingly in Purah’s tone under his breath.
Purah finished off a note in her journal before turning to the rest of the table. “Alright Adello, time to catch up. We’ve been playing ‘Till You Spill and I’ve already got some juicy stuff in here!”
Turning the pages of her journal towards Adello, she gave a chaotic grin. “Last round, Zimiri revealed that he once got teary eyed in front of the King himself after reading a poem about clouds.”
Zimiri raised his hands in defense. “Look, the clouds were an analogy for lost childhood innocence and I got choked up with that author’s amazing choice of imagery and descriptions, okay?”
Purah pointed her pen at him to hush, and continued. “Of course, him being a sentimental dork isn’t anything new, so he lost that round to Robbie who revealed the identity of his first crush.”
Zimiri muttered something about the game being rigged towards the birthday boy, but Adello talked over him, excitedly.
“Ooohhhh? Robbie?? Who are they?” She propped up her elbows and cradled her chin in her hands, excited at the prospect of more embarrassing information she could hang over his head.
He mumbled, looking to Purah for assistance, but she only cupped a hand over her ear, waiting for him to respond. “You all fuckin—” he sighed, “it’s…she’s…c-ch…” he avoided everyone’s gaze, “her name is...Cherry…”
Adello gasped, gleefully. “That girl from your old university?? The writer you hung out with!?”
Purah beamed, shaking Robbie’s shoulders excitedly. “I know right???” She loosened her grip and allowed him to wiggle out of her grasp for a moment. “Oh sweetie, campus days may be long gone for all of us prodigies and geniuses,” she flipped a few strands of her white hair with a turn of her head, “but I’m sure you’ll get her someday. You just gotta turn up the charm, find a way to woo with words. I’m sure writers love that.” Purah pulled down her glasses and gave a forced wink at him.
Adello tried to hold her tongue to no avail. “Pffft. Yeah, you can try wooing her with your punctuation.” This got a snicker out of Purah, and caused the birthday boy to blush furiously and slump further in his seat. Zimiri finally spoke up.
“Now, now, let’s all play nice. We don’t need to pester him further about it, he did win the round after all.”
“Uh, yeah. Speaking of the game, you still need to drink up, mister.” Purah slid a tan brown cup of apple cider towards him, the translucent contents sloshing around like muck in a gutter.
He leaned on the back two legs of his chair. “Isn’t it punishment enough to smell it? The cider isn’t even near my face and my mouth is already burning.”
She shrugged. “Them's the rules of ‘Till You Spill. Your secret sucked, so swig!”
The poet groaned, but complied. Tipping the cup towards his lips, Zimiri took a hearty slurp of the cider, much to everyone’s amusement. It felt like hot, molten copper mixed with old apple skins. How could something both burn and freeze your throat at the same time? He let out a gag, to which Adello patted him on the back with a short laugh.
Raising his posture, Robbie crowed, “When we finally have Zimiri’s birthday maybe then we’ll actually upgrade to the alcohol.”
Adello raised an eyebrow. “Uh, right, because the upgrade from disorientingly strong, smelly apple cider, is you two being flat out drunk. Right...”
Purah slammed both her fists down with pride, letting the cups and pitchers slosh a few amber colored drops onto the worn wooden table. “Bold of you to assume I’d drink at all, considering I’ve never lost a round! Mwahaha!” She blew a raspberry at her. “This tongue is apple free, baby.”
She gestured with her pinky and index finger at Zimiri and Adello. “Now, you two! The late combatant and the latest loser shall spill next. Give us your juicy gossip!!”
The bard, still reeling from his drink, leaned back in his chair and gave a nod toward Adello. “Ladies first?”
While she wasn’t undefeated in this drinking game, she sure as hell was playing to win. Especially since somebody needed to knock that smug expression off of Purah’s face. Adello thought to herself quickly.
Zimiri, no doubt, is probably gonna say something self-deprecating again, as he’s too nice to actually reveal anything embarrassing about anyone else. So...I just need to say something unexpected and interesting...perhaps something embarrassing about...hmm, I’ve already exhausted all my info about those cushy nobles and guards in past rounds…
Suddenly, she snapped her fingers. “The princess has a secret stuffed animal collection.” Seeing the light in her co-workers’ eyes twinkle, Adello knew she had chosen her words well. Purah leaned in. “Ooh? And how did you come across this juicy piece of information?” She rested her chin on an arm with an innocent smile.
“When I sent my application for the new job a few weeks ago, I gave it to the princess directly. It was late at night, and I bumped into her as she just left her room. The door was cracked open for a few seconds, before some royal, pompous guard slammed it right in my face. Yet, it wasn’t before I saw the pile of,” she counted on her fingers, “cow, sheep, bird, dog, and several horse stuffed animals piled high by her big, blue bed. I bet if I peeked for just a few more moments I could have found enough to pin her as a true horse girl.”
Robbie shrugged his shoulders, unconsciously rapping the table with his finger. “Well, speaking as a horse guy myself, I can attest to the fact that the childhood horse obsession phase never leaves, so I find Princess Zelda’s collection quite admirable.” He gave a nod towards Zimiri. “Either way, it’ll be tough to top that, Zim. Cute, yet slightly concerning, fact about our future queen? Quite the competition. Shall I signal the waiter for a refill now?”
Zimiri plucked a few more strings from his lute, before finally setting it down on the floor. He tilted his head, playfully. The string with sage green beads seemed to sway with the tavern’s music, and he spoke with a glint in his eyes. “Well, I might be faced with impending failure and ultimate defeat, but hells if I’m not one to try instead of mope.”
He combed his fingers through his messy, white hair, pondering his next choice of words. Fiddling with the beads and strings wrapped around it, he thought out loud.
“Let’s see...to top out on an embarrassing fact about a respected princess...it's natural to combat it with something...personal? That always seems to be the more valuable information in this game…” Adello shook her head. He was playing right into her hand.
“Well...Robbie won last round with the identity of Cherry...so, how about I dish out something similar. See, I’ve...uh…” he rubbed the back of his neck, “Oh! Well. Court poet, shrine researcher, the job gets you close with the princess...kinda...I’d like to think we’re close anyhow…” He mumbled the last part of his sentence and let out a short cough. Then, he went back to fiddling with his short, messy hair.
“So… ever since I moved into the castle, When did my mom move… five years now? I’ve, uh… had a crush on... Zelda…” He gave an uncertain grin, and raised the palm of his hands as if to ask, “well?”
At first he was met with silence. In his head, he started to celebrate the victory of his first ‘Till You Spill round in literal months. That was until he was met with groans and pitiful mutters.
“Oh Zimiri,” Purah sighed, “I was rooting for you too.” Seeing the bewilderment creep onto the poet’s face, Robbie answered the question before it even escaped his lips. “Literally everyone here knew that bud, it’s not a secret.”
The bard started to sputter, moving his hands in wild, questioning motions.
“But? Wha— I? You!? Didn’t you— I… W-Well I mean, I know Adello knew, I told her years ago, but you guys—”
“Oh my gods. Zimiri, you literally talk about her all the time, you’re totally in love. Given that we’re also the recipients of your long spiels and ballads about how ‘intelligent and thoughtful and amazing Zelda is,’” Purah said the words to mimic the tone of Zimiri’s honey sweet voice, “it’s exceptionally, extremely, very, very obvious.”
“R-Recognizing a person’s positive traits doesn’t instantly mean in love!”
The royal scientist leaned across the table and patted his head. “Right, but you also started attempting love songs a coincidental 2 weeks after starting your job of shrine research with her. Your eyes are already red, so whenever she passes by it’s like your pupils magically form into adoring hearts. Try to stay away from poker, it’s for your own good.”
Zimiri continued to sputter, his cheeks becoming roser by the second. Robbie turned to Purah. “So, all in favour of finding Adello’s spill better than Zimiri’s?” The two of them raised their hands in unison. “Alright buddy, secret sucked, so swig! WAITER PLEASE!”
Adello watched as the same woman she had seen near the bar earlier made her way to the table. Picking up a pitcher, she poured out a fresh cup of Adequate’s Apple Cider. The four of them had been here so many times, they didn’t even need to verbally ask for the order.
Before he could even start to reach for the cup, Adello snatched it out of the way. “Nah, it’s okay. I’ll do one for you, Zimiri. These two monsters have already tore you to shreds, and I’m sure I need a punishment anyway for coming in so late.”
He started to protest, but after catching the look in her dark, iron eyes, he relented. “Well, I thank you for your generosity.” The other two, however, were not as compliant.
Purah cupped her hands around her mouth, yelling, “Booooo... Boo to pity! Boo to generosity!” Robbie mimicked her.
“Yeah you have to respect your elders’ wishes. We demand blood! Suffering!”
Adello cracked her neck for show, before downing her glass of cider in a few gulps. The stench and tingling sensation seemed to stick to the sides of her throat. It would take more than water to clear that out. “Adequate” was being very generous when describing its quality.
“Mmmm. The cider’s weirdly salty tonight, I think your attitudes got mixed in here.”
Purah blew another raspberry at her.
They played for a few more rounds, the clatter of cups and breaths of laughter decorating the hours. Much to everyone’s distaste, Purah continued her winning streak, getting by with unbeatable information about the King, royal guards, and one embarrassing anecdote about how her little sister, Impa, had caught her writing an interesting letter to the “local archery hunk.”
Yet, Purah laughed along with the rest of them, the eyes behind her red rimmed glasses held no shame, which Adello envied. Of course that sort of attitude would make you a master at this game. Robbie and Adello attempted to team up and be biased towards Purah in an effort to get her to lose, but either Zimiri didn’t take the hint, or he just really liked playing fair which wasn’t exactly out of character, even if it meant more drinks for him.
Suddenly, a bell towards the back of the pub rang, signifying the end of the band’s gig. The dancing paused, as people gave their thanks, varying from politie applause to drunken yelps. Robbie then rapped the table with his hands, excitedly.
“You know what else tonight needs? Some amazing music, eh Zimiri?” He bounced his eyebrows up and down at him, and gestured towards the lute leaning on one of the table legs.
“I don’t know,” Zimiri replied, “I’ve only a part-time hire for the weekend rush hours, and I wouldn’t want to blindly get on stage and sing without being given permission.”
Adello scoffed. “Uh, are you kidding? The owner would love for you to play without paying you. Haven’t you heard the talk around town? The Adequate’s Tavern: Home of alright food and acceptable ale, but an outstanding bard!”
He fiddled with the string in his hair again. “Oh yeah? I’d love to meet him someday.” At this, Adello clicked her tongue and promptly shoved him out of his chair with her hip.
He laughed to himself as he stumbled aback. “Alright, alright, but only because the birthday tyrant requested it.” Robbie clapped his hands in a “chop-chop” fashion, to truly signify his role as the newly dubbed tyrant.
Suddenly, Zimiri perked his head. Stepping back towards the table, he reached for his cup. “Oh wait, I just lost that round. I still need to drink my—”
Adello grabbed the cup right out of his hands. She tipped it 180 degrees and let the cider spill completely onto the wooden floor. He hopped back, and Purah let out a surprised yelp, saying something about letting the stench seep into the floorboards. Robbie just started to laugh, wildly. Noticing the small commotion, a few other guests looked back at them and started to snicker to themselves.
Setting the cup back on the table, the researcher said, “Great, now you don’t need to ruin your voice any longer. Now get up there and one-up the last band.”
The bard pushed his chair under the table. Picking up his lute as he stood and faced Adello, a charming smile on his face. “Heh, well. My singing voice is grateful. I suppose now I’m in debt to comply.” He gave a curt bow.
Robbie clapped his hands again. “Great, great. Now quit the manners and let’s go already! I still have to order the cake pie!”
Both of the girls rolled their eyes in unison. Zimiri shrugged and started to walk through the small crowd of standing Hylians, and towards the small stage.
A few of the regulars who recognized him let out whoops and whistles, yelling out “Bard!” or “More music!” in support. It seemed that no one really knew his name, but it was nice enough to know that even working here part time would grant you the honor of being recognized by a bunch of random folk. One confused patron, who only associated him with “z” yelled out “Yeah, Zelda!” before promptly slumping under the table. Looking around, a blonde girl caught his eye, as it seemed she was staring at him. He waved, and her cheeks, much to Zimiri’s confusion, turned pink at his gaze and she turned to her friends who started giggling.
Moving past the last of the Hylians with an, “excuse me, sorry!” he finally stepped on the stage. The bard pulled up a small stool to the stage, leaning against it. Most of the folks continued to whoop in approval, seemingly eager for another chance to start dancing. Even the barkeep clapped his hands, probably excited at the thought of a free gig.
I guess, if no one is stopping me…
It was a rowdy bunch, but not a new one. Zimiri had played for these kinds of audiences before.
“I see that quite a few people are itching for a new tune. So, uh, any requests?” he announced as he strum a chord on his lute.
A mass of different voices bounced around the tavern, requests ranging from The Babbler’s Jig, Misko’s Tale, The Eldin Bluffs, and Can I Get More Ale? Although, Zimiri wasn’t quite familiar with the chords of that last song.
He couldn’t stop himself from being biased towards the request of a certain dark skinned girl to his left.
“The World Behind!” Adello said. “Enough with those new ballads, I demand a classic!”
Robbie pumped an arm in the air. “Yes!” he shouted. “I second that! So is my decree as birthday tyrant!”
The bard smiled, preparing the fingering on the neck of his lute. He turned towards the audience. “Well, I’m afraid I have no choice but to heed to such authority.” He began to pluck the beginning notes, tapping a tempo with his boot against the stage. “Now then, a beat, if you all would be so kind?”
The tavern chattered in approval, before piping down. There probably weren't more than 30 people, but the beat they made was definitely sufficient. The sound of stomping, banging mugs, and clapping filled the room. The tempo didn’t even need much adjusting, as The World Behind was pretty familiar around Castle Town. The beat was like a child pretending to be a marching soldier, unconcerned and playful.
Zimiri’s smile widened. A lively crowd indeed, this will do nicely.
With that, he started to sing. His silvery voice echoed across the tavern, as he closed his eyes and began to play.
The boys have gone out to the wishing well
Will they come back? Oh only time will tell
A rupee for a life refined
But time and dreams never align
So tell the world we’ll leave it all behind
Many of the guests had started to dance again, while the rest continued the beat of the song. As Zimiri plucked rapid notes on his lute, he heard a supporting holler from Purah. Next to her, Robbie was slamming his fist to the beat, clearly enjoying himself.
Have you seen the soldiers’ drinking ale?
They wish to sing along with nightingales
To dance on home with songs and rhymes
To banish all the fears from mind
Yes tell the world we’ll leave it all behind
Another pause between the verses, and the bard played the “decorative” rapid notes in between. He didn’t mean to seem like he was showing off, but Adello would attest to the fact that this happened whenever he got too into the music. Looking towards her, Zimiri saw her give a double thumbs up.
Of beasts and men and all atrocities
The damn-ed fate, she owns all that you see
To a better day of new design
Forgot about the gods divine
Oh tell the world we’ll leave it all behind
At this point, some of the guests were singing along, though not to the point of overpowering his own alluring voice. Laughter rang out around the warmly lit room once again. Zimiri looked out at the dancing patrons and smiling guests, grinning at the feeling in his chest this brought. He continued the last verse.
Watch the home while—
“HEY!”
The sudden gruff voice startled the bard to the point where he nearly slipped off the stage.
Lumbering through the double doors, three guards entered the tavern. The one in front, who had interrupted the music, wore a typical knight’s outfit, the same as his male and female coworkers behind him. However, the black hooded cape he wore atop his metal armour swayed with every step he took across the floor, his supposed rank silencing the room.
Well, mostly, silenced the room. A few ticked off guests were booing, groaning, and mocking him for ruining the entertainment.
“Oh would you lot shut up for 2 seconds?!” he said, his voice booming across the tavern. “Listen, I’ll be blunt. I gotta give two messages for this establishment.”
The guests shook their heads, mumbling. Their booing and insults continued, but their volume quieted, it was too early to be getting cross with a couple of knights. Even Zimiri quietly slipped off the stage back towards his friends so as not to be at the end of the knight’s intimidating voice.
The female guard behind the knight handed him a slip of parchment. Unfolding it, the guard cleared his throat.
“Firstly, your music and pounding is disturbing the noblemen next door. He’s staying at the inn or something and wants you to, quote,” he read from the paper, “quit the mindless thumping, for Castle Town is a place of serenity and peace, not of nonsense jigs and banging.”
The groaning and insults started up again; the man gave a shrug, stating something about how he was just following orders.
Adello couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “HA! Well, with an attitude like that, this’ll probably be the first and only time he’s been banged— he should be grateful.”
The room exploded into a mess of laughter and whoops. Even the guard smirked to himself, but attempted to hide it with a shake of his head, saying “Watch the mouth, girl.” Although, his stern tone wasn’t in it.
After a second, he cleared his throat again. With a stomp of his boot he regained the pub's attention, the laughter suffocated out.
“Now, we’re also here looking for a Dr. Robbie Kimura? I received word they might be around here?”
With the attention now towards a single table, most of the guests went back to their idle banter. A few waiters nodded their head towards the table in the back, and the man caught sight of three, white haired teenagers, who were sitting with the dark haired girl who had quipped out earlier.
The scientists turned around too late, in an effort to avoid the knight’s gaze. “Gee, what a bunch of snitches,” Robbie mumbled. The three guards started to walk over to the table.
“Dr...Robbie?”
“Who’s asking?” Robbie squinted with his dark brown eyes.
“Doctor? Really? Is this some kind of prank? You and your friends don’t even look old enough to drink.”
He scoffed. “Okay, first, yes I am a doctor! I didn’t fly through all those courses over four years just to be called, ‘Mr.’ And secondly, I’ll have you know that I am a ripe 20 years of age today, and I’m here drinking expired apple juice with my associates. So take that, pal!”
Beside him, Purah gave a proud nod in agreement. Zimiri started to wave politely at the guard, but Adello grabbed his arm before he could finish the movement. The guard was a bit unsettled with the way that girl was glaring at him. What was some random Hylian doing hanging out with a bunch of Sheikah anyway?
“Right, well, look here, son. Some curious aristo-brat snuck into the courtyard and caused one of those flying, metal Sheikah things to fall apart. My boss said that it was your prototype so you should come back and clean it up before something explodes, and possibly give a sincere apology to the meddling kid who got a few scratches.”
Robbie threw his hands in the air, exasperated. “You’re really gonna pull me out of a birthday just so I can go apologize to a spoiled kid for breaking in and ruining my Guardian?”
“If it lets me keep my job, then yeah.”
Robbie mumbled something about not getting a slice of the apple cake pie.
Suddenly, Adello got up and pushed her chair in, smoothing out the belt around her tunic as she walked towards them.
“Ah yes, well, thank you my dear assistant for the assessment but I’m capable of taking it from here.”
The guard raised a bushy, black eyebrow. “Sorry, wha—”
“You said you only wanted Dr. Robbie? Well great job, you found them. Now let’s get going, I need to finish up a new design anyway.”
“You’re...Robbie? You’re a... clearly not—”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I should have had my mother consult you for your opinion before I was given my name.”
This time, the guard didn’t smile along with her quip. “This is not the time for—”
She held up a finger to silence him, and glared at the three guards with her iron eyes.
“Look, I’m not a nobody. I’m more than capable of fixing up the guardian and any other disasters you might have left lying around the castle grounds. If I’m feeling generous, maybe I’ll even lick the kid’s boots, it’s not my first time dealing with this, alrighty?”
The knights looked at each other, quizzically. The researcher crossed her arms.
“You’re still following your precious orders, aren't you? How would you know what Dr. Robbie looks like? You can’t be faulted for not knowing someone you never met. So, you’ll just have to take my word for it.”
The blonde man behind the gruff, black caped guard, whispered something to his female coworker. Her gaze switched between the girl and the man. Still seeing the uncertainty in their eyes, Adello leaned closer to the knight and lowered her voice. “Come on, have a little heart, it’s his birthday.”
A beat of silence sat, only filled by the mild mumbling and chatter of the tavern. Finally, the guard let out a sigh.
“Alrighty Dr. Kimura. I’ll help escort you to the site.”
Robbie started to protest, but Adello quickly silenced him with a wink. The guard turned towards the rest of the room, yelling, “The rest of you, the sun is gonna rise in a few hours so save your rioting for then! Am I clear?”
The patrons just responded with stupid groans and half-hearted agreements. They started walking towards the door. The female guard started to put a hand on Adello’s shoulder, but she brushed it off, saying something along the lines of “I can walk on my own two feet, thank you very much.”
Purah turned in her seat. “I’ll save a slice of cake pie for you!” Adello turned her head and responded with a two fingered salute, before disappearing out the door with the guards.
The tension in the tavern was almost immediately cleared, the moment the knights left. Most of the people went back to their normal conversational volume, and the waiters began to patter about with more confidence. However, Zimiri slumped in his seat, letting out a sigh.
“Why does she always do things like that?”
Robbie fiddled with the edge of his cup, tracing his finger around the rim. “Well, you know her. Undermining authority? Check. Insults and quips? Check.”
Robbie continued to list off more traits, but it faded out of Zimiri’s ear. Always jumping onto other’s burdens. Ah, that idiot. I bet she hasn’t slept for the last two days.
Purah suddenly piped up, taking out her pen and rapping it against the table. “Alright you two, let’s not let the sacrifice be in vain. Pool your rupees, we’re getting Robbie the fancy cake pie.”
The clatter of a few red and blue rupees echoed on the wooden table, although Zimiri knocked Robbie’s share aside, saying how the birthday tyrant shouldn’t have to pitch in. Purah turned in her chair and started to wave her hand, in order to get the attention of a waiter. The bard watched as a woman with a tray started to walk over to the table. Then, he turned to Robbie.
“So what should we do while we wait?” Zimiri asked. Robbie stroked his chin, looking around the room.
“I think...the people could still use some music.”
Looking out at the crowd, Zimiri noticed how the guards' interference had really dampened the atmosphere. The warm and lively laughter that was present just a few moments earlier was now replaced with more monotone chatter.
He nodded his head in agreement, putting on a charming smile. The place needed a new pick-me-up, did it?
Well, what else is a bard for?
Stepping back onto the stage, he strummed an open chord, double checking the tuning. The whooping and clapping started to return, much to his delight. Plucking a familiar melody, the warm feeling in his stomach returned as he watched the new smiles that started to fill the room. However, before he began to sing, Zimiri first focused on craning his neck to look out a window, trying to catch a glimpse of a certain girl in the night.
It seemed the moon and sun were balanced on the edge of the world. The night had started to submerge behind the walls of West Castle Town, with only the brightest stars still perched upon the ink of the navy blue sky. The silver lining of greying clouds just barely glowed from the faint light of the day, still trying to break out of the eastern waters.
Adello’s footsteps echoed through the cobblestone streets, but she could barely hear it against the shifting of metal plates from the guards in front of her.
The gruff man looked back, scratching his peach fuzzed chin as he spoke. “Listen, if you finish your work quick I might be able to escort you back here.”
Adello shook her head. She turned to retrieve a journal from the pouch on her belt, opening its pages as an excuse to avoid his gaze. “No, it’s fine. I still have some more work I should be finishing up at home anyhow.”
“You...live at the castle?”
“Mmm.”
The guard took her blunt response as a sign to not continue with the niceties, much to Adello’s relief. Looking up, she gazed at the looming castle. Its towers were like mountain peaks, sitting above the blurred silhouettes of the buildings of Castle Town.
Taking out a bit of charcoal, she started to sketch its outline on a fresh page in her journal. While she only had one color, she tried to capture the shadows and lighting that cascaded on one side of the castle to the other.
The female guard slowed her step, starting to walk alongside the researcher.
“Already working?”
Adello didn’t look up from her journal. “Uh… you could say that.”
She laughed. “Well you best hope you know what you’re doing. This kid’s father has been yelling at Her Highness all night. Supposedly because she’s helping to lead Sheikah research, so everyone associated with guardians is at fault.”
Adello finished up the tower of Princess Zelda’s study in her sketch. She smiled to herself at the finished work. It was one of her better pieces. Putting the journal away, she turned back to the guard and scoffed. “Is that so?”
The guard hummed a yes, her blonde braid swaying to each side as she walked. “Apparently, the kid is the son of some visiting nobleman from the East Post. It’d be in your best interest to apologize profusely if you still wanna walk around alive.”
Adello shook her head. She didn’t know it then, but looking back, many moons from now, she would laugh at the irony of her response.
“I’d rather die.”

Billboard #1s 1985
Under the cut.
Foreigner -- "I Want To Know What Love Is" -- February 2, 1985
One of the quintessential 80s power ballads. It's actually kind of interesting if you think about it enough. He's not in love yet, but he's gotten sick of not being in love, so he's asking someone he's in the pre-love stage with to show him. Though he's had "heartache and pain" before, and doesn't know if he can face it again. It's not consistent. I feel like it's a missed opportunity, but oh well. It's good enough for what it is.
Wham! -- "Careless Whisper" -- February 16, 1985
Oh my god I love the saxophone in this. The music throughout the song is so incredibly sexy. And this is the kind of song George Michael's voice was made for. He's totally capable of sounding both hot and in agony at the same time. I actually adore a whole lot of cheating songs -- mostly, though not exclusively, the tormented kind. Drama! Love! Sex! Angst! Gorgeous.
REO Speedwagon -- "Can't Fight This Feeling" -- March 9, 1985
<3. He keeps singing "r"s like a pirate, but he doesn't go as hard on the other consonants, so I'm good with it. Lyrically, this song sounds like it might be two songs mashed together. "What started out as friendship has grown stronger" or "my life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you." Well which is it? Except I've had that happen. I love this song.
Phil Collins -- "One More Night" -- March 30, 1985
This is a depressing heartbreak song without the saving grace of any of Phil Collins' neat drum stuff. Blah.
We Are the World -- April 13, 1985
Whoo boy. I was 8 when this came out. Obviously I loved it. All the kids loved it. Now, though... I'm sorry, but it's bad. Really bad. Many others have gone deeply into why it's bad. I feel acutely embarrassed listening to it, so I'm just running away from it as fast as possible. (Remember all those celebrities singing "Imagine" in their mansions in 2020? I blame this song for that.)
Madonna -- "Crazy For You" -- May 11, 1985
This is one of Madonna's most straightforward love songs. Maybe the most, period. This or "Cherish," and this is a better song. It's lovely. Like Olivia Newton-John, Madonna can act a song. (Unlike in most movies she's been in.) But what I'm thinking about now is learning in this article that her label wouldn't let Madonna release "Into the Groove" as a single. That song was huge. It was played on the radio all the time. If it had been released as a single, or maybe if Billboard had tracked songs then like it does today, it would have been a massive smash, definitely #1. "Into the Groove" is also the best song of her very early career. "Crazy for You" is good, but not nearly as special.
Simple Minds -- "Don't You Forget About Me" -- May 18, 1985
As I am "Gen X", I am supposed to deeply connect with The Breakfast Club. I was 8 years old when it came out. My life as a teenager was nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, like that movie. I didn't recognize any of the "types." I liked the movie when I saw it in college, mostly, but the whole sexual harassment turns into a relationship deal was not seen as cool any longer. The "jocks vs. nerds" thing also felt very dated. The school in the movie was bigger and richer than mine, but it's a fantasy.
Anyway, though I don't feel much about the movie, its breakout song was really good. It does speak to a real fear both in graduating high school and during young adult relationships. I haven't forgotten the people I knew in high school, as far as I know, but obviously they don't have the same importance to me any longer. I'm Facebook friends with a lot of them. And very much not with a couple who were the most important then, because we grew apart -- or blasted apart. One of the nicest girls I knew in high school thinks there's a war on Christmas. Another keeps trying to get me to join her MLM. One of my best friends became my first boyfriend, and I don't regret that, but it was also a semi-disaster. And others... we just have nothing to say to each other any longer.
So, Breakfast Club: I don't connect with at all. "Don't You Forget About Me": Speaks to something very real and timeless.
Wham! -- "Everything She Wants" -- May 25, 1985
What a dick. Songs in which the narrator is a colossal jerk are perfectly fine, of course, but this one gets under my skin. He's whining about his wife getting pregnant when she's dissatisfied with their life and that they're broke. As if it's something she chose to do to him. She's stuck creating a whole other person with her blood and flesh, and he thinks it's all and entirely about him. I really hate it.
Tears for Fears -- "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" -- June 8, 1985
I can't hear this song without thinking of this Baldur's Gate fan trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jdd06d2nids. Speaking of which, I am incredibly excited for Baldur's Gate 3. I've been reading the early access reviews on Steam, and anything anyone is saying that's negative is stuff I don't gaf about (except bugs), whereas the positive stuff, I care about deeply. I hope it's got some of the feeling of that trailer. Um, right, Tears for Fears.
Honestly, though, it works best as a Baldur's Gate theme song. I don't think everybody actually wants to rule the world. It sounds good though. And pretty different from other stuff around it. But I like Lorde's cover better, and not just because it fits so wonderfully with all sorts of fantasy stories.
I usually play a paladin or paladin-type the first time in fantasy RPGs, but I'm thinking bard this time.
Bryan Adams -- "Heaven" -- June 22, 1985
He's been with this woman since they were young, and while they've broken up and gone through rough patches, now they're together forever and they're "in heaven." Bryan Adams knew exactly how to write a song that would become a hit. I used to not mind it at all, but it also means nothing to me. The chorus is catchy as hell though. So catchy that I ended up waking up with it in my head and it would not leave for hours and hours, so now I resent this song.
Phil Collins -- "Sussudio" -- July 6, 1985
I refuse to believe anyone ever told Phil Collins he was too young. He was born middle-aged. Anyway, the narrator isn't supposed to be him, so it's fine, but it's still kinda funny. He's got a crush on someone who doesn't even know his name, but "she's all I need all of my life." Um. The music is repetitive, the drums aren't as interesting as Phil Collins at his best, and I don't like the lyrics. I don't hate it, but I don't like it either.
Duran Duran -- "View to a Kill" -- July 13, 1985
I'm not sure I've ever heard this song before. It's about as good a song as the Bond movie they wrote it for was as a movie. In other words, it's bad. I'm not even sure there's a melody. Just a mess. "Ordinary World" would have made a far better Bond theme, but of course that was the 90s, when Duran Duran decided to try to make sense both lyrically and musically.
Paul Young -- "Every Time You Go Away" -- July 27, 1985
I like the high keyboard notes in this. They're sort of haunting. The rest of the song is musically pretty good, too. Lyrically though, it's only passable. This woman keeps leaving him every time "the leading man" shows up, so I guess he's the backup. Why does he keep waiting for her anyway? There's no hint in the song. I'm kind of embarrassed for him.
Tears for Fears -- "Shout" -- August 3, 1985
I think "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is a better song than this one when done by Lorde. But I think "Shout" is a better song than Tears for Fears' original iteration of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." The chorus seems clear enough. But the verses are not. "They gave you life/ And in return you gave them hell" makes sense in isolation, but then there's a bunch of stuff that doesn't go with it. Like "I'd really love to break your heart" -- wtf? But the music is really good.
Huey Lewis and the News -- "The Power of Love" -- August 24, 1985
This was the big song for Back to the Future, and it meshed beautifully with the movie, but it doesn't need that association to be a great song. "Don't need money, don't take fame/ Don't need no credit card to ride this train/ It's strong and it's sudden, it can be cruel sometimes/ But it might just save your life." Yep. It's sort of Motown, sort of rock, and I love it. (Also: "Stronger and harder than a bad girl's dream." Heh.)
John Parr -- "St. Elmo's Fire" -- August 24, 1985
Of all the John Hughes movies I have not seen and do not plan to see, St. Elmo's Fire sure is one of them. The song is about a disabled man who inspired people by rolling himself cross-country in his wheelchair for charity, which has absolutely nothing to do with the movie. I'm disabled, and I just... okay look, what he did was admirable. But we shouldn't have to be inspirations to be counted as worthwhile, and I've been told I should die because I can't produce for capitalism, so you know. I've got some personal issues with this and I'm gonna move along.
Dire Straits -- "Money for Nothing" -- September 21, 1985
This is not Dire Straits' best song, but it's an awfully fun one. I watched the video tons when I was a kid. (That sound is Tipper Gore falling to the floor in a dead faint.) The music is great rock. And the lyrics are very true-to-life. You can either sanitize people or present them as they are honestly, and I know which I prefer.
Ready for the World -- "Oh Sheila" -- October 12, 1985
The band's from Michigan. The English accent at the beginning of the song is fake. That's a good preview for the song, which sounds like a 3rd-rate Prince knockoff at best. Blech.
a-ha -- "Take On Me" -- October 19, 1985
The video totally ripped off one of my aunts. Somehow or other, they saw into the little comic she drew for me about someone going into a land of drawings to rescue someone else in a romantic adventure, years before 1985. Anyway, this song is great musically, massively synthesizer heavy without sounding artificial. Though I can only understand maybe a third of the lyrics as he sings them. I've always understood "It's no better to be safe than sorry" though. Yep, at least when it comes to romance, which is what they're singing about here.
Whitney Houston -- "Saving All My Love for You" -- October 26, 1985
It's not better to be safe than sorry, but that doesn't mean it's good to be an absolute idiot in matters of romance either. Nor is it good to be a colossal jerk. That's what the narrator is here -- the "you" she's singing to is married. And he won't leave his wife and children, though he used to say he would. The lyrics seem to say that's she's accepted the situation, but the way Houston sings it, I think the narrator's trying to get him to leave his wife -- and children -- for her still. This makes sense, as it puts some kind of passion and sense of story into the song, which without Houston's singing would not be there. The narrator certainly never acknowledges that what she's doing is wrong in the slightest iota. This song could be done in a way that works. But it's a completely sincere ballad. So, no. I despise the narrator, I despise the man she's singing to more, and the whole thing leaves me feeling gross.
Stevie Wonder -- "Part Time Lover" -- November 2, 1985
No one's thinking anyone's gonna leave anyone in this one. It's about cheating, and the thrill of it, but then at the end, he's found out his wife's cheating on him too. "I guess that two can play the game/ Of part-time lovers." This kind of funk groove is one way you make a song like this. It makes the whole thing sexy and fun, and the lyrics also work even beyond that ending, because they acknowledge it's wrong.
Jon Hammer -- "Miami Vice Theme" -- November 9, 1985
My parents didn't watch Miami Vice. And then I never felt like watching it in re-runs when I got older. I don't recognize this song. It's an energetic instrumental, but there's so much going on, I keep trying to figure out if there's a main musical idea anywhere. Nope. Just lots and lots of synth. Headache-inducing.
Starship -- "We Built This City" -- November 16, 1985
Blech. This song sounds both unfinished and overproduced somehow. The chorus seems designed to be catchy with absolute ruthlessness by people who didn't really care, and no one involved even seems to want to bother to fake it.
Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin -- "Separate Lives" -- November 30, 1985
This is supposed to be heart-wrenchingly sad. Well, it does tank my dopamine, but that's not what a good sad song does. A good sad song makes you feel better. This one makes me need to turn on something high-energy after about 30 seconds, before I sink into bleakness. It's aggressively boring.
Mr. Mister -- "Broken Wings" -- December 7, 1985
This was one of the first songs I recorded from the radio. On my pink tape deck/radio that was a sort of a mini boom box. I've always had my own tape player since I can remember, but that was a definite upgrade from the Sesame Street one. I was 9 then, so getting more seriously into music and developing my own taste intentionally, rather than simply absorbing what was happening around me.
Anyway, the song. It's about a relationship in trouble, and he wants to stay with her. To me it sounds like she has been so seriously hurt (and not by him), that she can't trust anyone, and he's laying himself on the line for her. That has spoken to me deeply ever since I first heard the song as a child. Moving on to the music: While the lyrics are repetitive, the music is not, which is what makes the song so good. It's a beautiful song.
Lionel Richie -- "Say You, Say Me" -- December 21, 1985
I look forward to Lionel Richie no longer being on the charts. This song was on the soundtrack of some movie I've never heard of. I wish I'd never heard of the song. Totally artificial glop.

Life, Death and Between
“Jasky Baby! Geraaaaaaaaaaalt! Get up!”
You yelled running up the stairs of your cottage with a newfound spring in your step. The boys were both snug in the two beds you had set up in the attic once you figured they would be staying for a while.
You lived right at the bottom of a huge mountain that was surrounded by a very dense forest, how these two idiots were able to stumble upon your home in the middle of the night three years ago still befuddled you.
You pulled the blankets off the musician first, then the giant monster hunter and finally ripped open the curtains, letting light stream in.
Jaskier moaned and put his pillow over his head to shield his eyes. “Y/N, why are you doing this to me?!” He whined.
“Come on! You have to get out of bed and see this!” You said excitedly. Geralt slowly sat up and watched as you ran amok through the room, throwing clothes at them trying to speed up the process.
He chuckled and eventually got out of bed, grabbing the pillow off of Jaskier and whacking him with it. “Come on, we better go before she decides to roll you out of bed through the window.”
Once the boys were fully dressed (though Jaskier’s shirt was buttoned through the wrong holes making it crumple a bit at the bottom) you ran down the staircase and zipped out the door. “What’s up with her?” The bard mumbled, trying to tame the creature that was his hair.
They came ou the front door and you appeared in front of them wearing a flower crown made up of daisies, baby’s breath, and pink kinnikinnick.
In your hands were two extra flower crowns that you quickly placed on the boy’s heads and then motioned for them to follow. The two followed you until you stopped at a small body of water that a waterfall ran into from the mountain.
It was a sight to behold.
The water was a serene blue, and the light danced upon it like stars in the night sky. Small water Nymphs skittered on the surface, moving what appeared to be small boats to the center of the pond. These boats were made of wood branches, large leaves and some were mushrooms flipped over.
But the best part about them was the fairies sitting in them.
All at once, fairies seemed to appear at the pond. So many colors and types, some wore petal clothes and others wore nothing. Wings varied in size, ranging from the size of Geralt’s hand to nail on your pinky.
The three of you watched in awe as a special ceremony was performed on the water. The fairies lined up in two rows on each side, making a pathway from the edge of the pond to the center. In the center, the boats had been enchanted and now floated in the air, sparkles of the pixie dust making them shimmer in the light.
Then all the chattering from the fairies ceased and they turned to the water's edge and watched the treeline as something emerged. It appeared to be a floating carriage made from an old bird nest and flowers. Sitting in this carriage was the most ethereal fairy you had ever seen. She had long flowing lilac hair that flowers were embedded into.
Her dress was made of rose petals, mostly white, sans the bottom hem that was purple tulip petals. It trailed over the carriage side it was so long, making it appear like a wedding veil, floating behind a bride.
Her wings though were the most gorgeous you had ever laid eyes on, they weren’t very large, about the length of your palm to your index finger. But they seemed to be translucent, the only way you would know they were there is if the light reflected through them, creating a small rainbow effect on the other side.
Once at the edge of the pond, faint music started to play, you looked over to the source and saw several fairies with miniature versions of violins, lutes, and a flute. As the queen of the fairies crossed over the water, the others started to bow as she passed. You immediately did as well when she glanced over to the three of you. Geralt slowly bowed his head and Jaskier did a full bow when you tugged on his tunic.
The band of fairies died out as the queen flew up from the carriage. In a somber voice, you heard her speak.
“Thank you all for coming today, this ceremony has been long overdue since many have treated our kind unfairly, we have had no reason to have it. But now, a true friend has stepped forward and offered their unconditional love to us. It is with great honor that I present our new Guardian of the Forest.”
Jaskier whispered to Geralt, “Do you know who it is?” With a small smile, Geralt answered. “Yes, I do.”
This greatly intrigued you, so you bent over, “Who is it then?” Geralt made a motion to look forward.
There were two small fairies in front of you, one of them lime green and the other an ivory color. They both wore white tulip tunics and were holding a long shawl out. It was very thin and resembled the queen’s wings. There were small symbols etched into the edge all around it with pixie dust.
“It’s you.”
You watched in awe as the fairies draped the shawl over your shoulders and led you to the edge of the water where the pathway of fairies floated. You took a step into the water, the sweet cold tickling your bare feet and soaking the bottom of your skirt. But it did not matter, as you walked down the path of magical creatures.
You noticed others that had come to watch the ceremony. Some deer with on the opposite side of the pond, small hummingbirds flitted to a branch overlooking the water. Even butterflies flew around, watching the scene unfold.
Once at the center of the pond, the queen flew down to you and bowed her head.
“Thank you for always doing what is best for the forest. Your caring nature has shown us that there are still humans worthy of knowing our powers. You shower us with loyalty and never ask for anything in return, only a friendship. Now that you have proven yourself to be a true friend, it is with great honor that I bestow you, Guardian of the Forest and Creatures.”
With a wave of her hand, a flower crown made of twine, lavender, baby’s breath, poppies, and everlasting floated over and took the place of your other crown that two fairies took off your head. Then, with a kiss to your forehead, magic flourished.
You fell into a small slumber as Geralt and Jaskier watched in awe as you were lifted by magic from the water. The fairies flew upwards and circled around you, dancing and singing a magical chant.
Oh, our Guardian,
Protector of all
Loves and cherishes
Anything big or small.
Oh, our Guardian
Whom we adore
Let us celebrate
This moment they are reborn.
As they sang, the water rose from the pond and encased you in a sphere of magic. Lights flashed through it and sparks of pixie dust sprinkled down from the circle. It was like fireworks were going off inside this magical womb made from the water.
The faires chanted and sang until the water started to tremor and then bursted out in every direction.
Light flooded the area, coming from you then simmered down. Gently, you were lowered down to the pond’s surface, only this time, you were able to stand on the top and not sink through. Your once wet clothing was now replaced with a new outfit.
The fabric flowed down your body like ripples of water. It was a white dress that had puffed flowing long sleeves that stopped at your wrist and moved in the wind. The bodice came up and around your neck, various designs in lace and jewels coating the front. It went down from your waist to the water, the trail behind it sitting atop the water just as you were.
You now had small baby’s breath woven into the braided crown of hair. The braids seemed to hold with no ties or lacing, only the sparkle of magic showed beneath the sun's rays.
But was most awe-inspiring, were the new wings that adorned your back.
Beautiful blue morpho wings now fluttered out from behind you, stretching and glistening in the light. It was surreal, you touched the wings as they curled around you, now another piece of your body and mind.
The queen smiled at you. “Thank you so much for trusting in me.” You said to her. You brought your hand up to her and she hugged it, making you grin.
“Y/N!!! Y/N!!” When you turned, you saw Jaskier jumping up and down on the side of the water, Geralt smacking him up the back of the head when heads turned to see the commotion as the bard quite reasonably freaked out.
“You may go to them, you are now the bridge between the fae world and humans.” With one last smile to the queen, you walked on the water’s surface until you stepped foot on land. Jaskier bounded over to you followed by a fast walking Geralt.
You floated a few feet off the ground and spun for them. “Well, what do you think?” The bard gasped, “You, you! You’re a spirit now! You, you, you have wings!!!!!” He spoke very quickly, trying to process his thoughts and emotions on what had just conspired.
As you lowered to the floor, Geralt took your hand and gave it a small kiss on the back of it and then did an elegant bow in front of you. “She’s the Guardian of the Forest, not a spirit you idiot. We wouldn’t be able to see her if she was.”
You chuckled, “I can see so many things now that the human eye cannot, the world is so beautiful! There are so many lives that we cannot see with the naked eyes, it’s amazing.”
Jaskier walked around you and trailed a finger down your left wing, “Well, if anyone was going to watch over the forest it would definitely be you. You spend every day tending to nature and it’s inhabitants.”
“Including us.” Geralt added, leaning against a tree.
With a wave of your hand, the train of the dress hooked to the back of your waist and you took each of your friend’s hands, walking back to the cottage.
As you walked, Jaskier asked questions. “Will this change everything? Will you leave and live in the forest? What happens now?”
“Oh Jaskier, I’m not going anywhere. I’m the bridge between fae creatures and humans remember? I’ll always be here for you, now I just have a broader approach to the world around us and some added abilities. I understand that I will have to live up to my title as Guardian and sometimes leave to protect the creatures I love, but I’ll never be gone forever. I’ll always come back to my dearest friends... if they want me too.”
Geralt put an arm around you, “Of course we want you to.”
You gasped, “Is the great Geralt of Rivia saying that he wants me around? Gee Jasky, did he wake up this morning feeling ill? This is very peculiar for a Witcher…”
Jaskier threw back his head and laughed, Geralt just shook his and smiled.
Then you got a bright idea, “Hey, now that I’m not just another damsel in distress for Geralt to protect on journeys like Jaskier—“ “Hey!” “—maybe I can come with you guys when you leave for adventures!”
“Are you sure that would be safe Y/N?” The Witcher asked. You nodded, “I think that maybe the fates led us to each other because they knew we would be able to help each other. It’s destiny!” Geralt groaned, “Don't say that word.”
You nudged him with your shoulder, “I’m not such a bad destiny to have am I?”
“No Y/N, you’re the best destiny to have.”
With that, the three friends walked through the forest, back to your cottage.
Some say that many songs were created that day, the day Life and Death and Between came to be friends for eternity.
Toss a coin to your Witcher
O’Valley of Plenty
O’Valley of Plenty
O’
The tales of three are whispered
In the dead of night
As Life and Death, became friends
And joined the quest to fight.
To save mankind from its horrid greed
Greatest of friends, and seldom foes
A human also accompanied thee.
Toss a coin to your Witcher
O’Valley of Plenty
O’Valley of Plenty
O’
And a friend to the Guardian of humanity.
