i feel like unless you are very close to birkin ( annette, wesker, etc. ), particularly pre-outbreak, he comes off as incredibly cold. not only is he arrogant, but he's very emotionally cut off.
he's 15 when he's first brought to umbrella and i do think that umbrella helps shape his moral compass. the way he's able to look at lisa trevor with no compassion, but instead wants to continue to experiment on her is proof enough of that. he's able to compartmentalize in a terrifying way.
he's so so focused on work. and because he was a child prodigy, he has an inflated sense of self-worth.
with that said, i think it's also important to state that my portrayal of birkin doesn't carry that energy towards everyone in his life. for instance, i don't portray him as a cold father towards sherry by any means. who birkin is around family is different, but he is often distracted.
i think what attracted him to annette is not only that they worked together, but that he was able to relax and be more of a person around her. birkin's entire life was under intense pressure from childhood academics to being recruited into umbrella. i do think he loved his family, but he has shitty priorities ( and didn't know how to betray umbrella without getting himself "killed" ).
birkin's perception of wesker is also that of camaraderie and friendship. it's legit the equivalent of meeting someone in high school and working with them until you die ( in birkin's case at 36, but still ). he isn't cold towards the people in his life who have been a part of his inner circle.
AU based off Nature except I kept thinking about it too hard. Dales not a good dad, but its such an easy problem for him to throw money at, and what do you do when a part is damaged? Well, you replace it.
Basically an AU where Dev gets to experience medical trauma and realizes much sooner how much his dad doesn't love him
"Maybe I needed it once. But I trained here, with The Flying Graysons, before I trained with you, Bruce. You know what the key is to a good trapeze act? Letting go...trusting that there's someone on the other side to catch you. You taught me a lot. But I learned from them to leap into the light. We're not the same, don't you see, Bruce? I had you." -Detective Comics #1074
hang on a minute y'all, I need to go scream into the abyss
ngl its wild seeing people say toshiro's reaction to chimera falin was because she was not longer "palatable" to him like yeah i would be freaking the fuck out if my former party members' attempt to save someone important to us turned her into a murderous chimera on a rampage who just killed all of our party members in front of us and only barely had any traces of herself left in her. i WOULD want to, y'know, let her rest instead of attempting to defy death by further mangling her beyond comprehension because these people have shown they have no idea what they're doing and have apparently caused a fate worse than death for her. it's pretty much just the flip side of the coin and "letting falin go" is, in fact, a lesson the crew has to learn by the end
i don't think faligon is falin's "true nature", i think it's an extreme end consequence of her issues: one where she has little free will, is on complete autopilot, and is controlled by another person.
can i just say. and this is probably a niche hill to die on. that i am so gobsmacked every time someone vaguely hints at the idea that jotaro doesn't care meaningfully for the other crusaders, usually particularly kakyoin and joseph, when those two actually tend to be the ones he reacts to being hurt the hardest
like he cares for his loved ones!!!! that literally plays into his character motives in every single part he shows up in!!! stop lying to me!!!!!!!
Time travel AU but rather than it being a traditional AU where Cloud travels back in time to his Shinra days, it's Zack.
Directly after dying he wakes back up at Shinra with Angeal still alive, Genesis still around, Sephiroth not being insane, and most importantly Cloud being awake and well. He's ecstatic at first, crying as he hugs Cloud while muttering about how great it is to see Cloud awake again (much to Cloud's confusion, since what?) but quickly his joy is replaced with paranoia.
Because Zack is in no way shape or form not mentally stable. He's just experienced five straight years of hell, and now he has to potentially relive that, (re)kill his mentor, deal with Genesis, and deal with Sephiroth going insane. So as he's trying to come up with ways to prevent the tragic future he knows is coming, he's not being fully rational in his thoughts.
One such way he is not being rational is by attempting to get Cloud to help him in his plans. Much to Zack's surprise, while Cloud was pretty content with going along with just about anything/being dragged anywhere while he was in a coma (on account of him being in a coma) he is not very thrilled by Zack's plan to murder... well, several people.
Meanwhile Cloud is convinced that Zack is degrading and losing his mind. Killing Sephiroth? Finding a way to help Angeal pass peacefully? Something about an alien living in the Nibelheim reactor? Not to mention all of Zack's plans for "keeping him safe" which sound an awful lot like kidnapping. Cloud is terrified.
Although with Zack feigning sanity in public, Cloud isn't certain who he can go to for help. Afterall, even if he could get in contact with someone, who would believe him?
yuuta exhibits such previously abandoned, recently adopted dog behavior. incredibly anxious all the time, even though nobody’s out to get him or leave him behind. waits for you to return home or from school or from work excitedly, just to see you when you walk through the door. follows you around senselessly, hovering in your space just for the sake of companionship. initiates affection in prodding ways—starts off next to you, then a hand on your thigh, then deems it safe to lay all the way down, then slowly pushes his head into your lap. gets up whenever you need to get up, and resumes his position as soon as you’re ready. brings you gifts as a sign that he’s thinking of you, and maybe because he likes the affection it brings out in you, maybe because he likes the gentle affirming touches of a hand in his hair or a pinch to his cheek. rests his head on your stomach or his chin on your shoulder when he’s sleepy, stays there, immobile, and will not move unless absolutely necessary. sometimes he gets surprised when he hears you calling for him, there’s a moment of disbelief as he thinks “me? really? you need me?” but it’s very quickly overshadowed by this compulsive need to show up, to please, to do anything for you, which is why he always answers when you call. he doesn’t realize that he has puppygod eyes, especially when he’s excited or confused, but he does and its incredible endearing. very reluctant to share your space or attention after a while, considers that to be sacred and he won’t risk being let go or lost again, so as a safety precaution, he keeps himself right by you, waits for you always.
i don't really have coherent meta thoughts here, but there's something really tasty about the potential conflict between evan 'the only way i can tell people love me is when they yell at me for my dumb choices' buckley and eddie 'i will keep my mouth shut if it kills me' diaz
On this night I am thinking about Haru Sagara and how he is consistently putting others' needs in front of his own. And how, though he plays stupid and plays the overbearing captain, when given the choice between self-preservation or saving others he will always, without any question, choose to save others.
It's really sad in a sense to see this trend happening over and over. Like... he's burdened with someone else's debt and he deals with it himself with a fairly reasonable amount of griping. He takes over a park he doesn't know the operation of and teaches himself to do it by himself, because there's nobody else to rely on like general students (and, generally, Towa seems to be a free-spirit, and Haru encourages it!).
He frequently ignores his own health in order to give the anomalous animals the best lives he can in the park too. He remarks about getting bitten a ton, he obviously deals with upset anomalies frequently, he sacrifices AC on the off chance an anomaly may wander into the dorm... I think something that sticks out to me is that, when he wakes up from his tetanus coma, the janitor reprimands him for another ignored injury. And it's true! We see him get injured and subsequently ignore it a Lot! Or we see him put himself in positions to be injured for the sake of other people.
In Princess Oto's castle, he uses his stigma to save Ren and Calimari despite knowing he'd get hurt. And Ren is right to be mad at him about it! But what's worse is that he turns around and almost immediately does it again, this time with the implication that he was ready to lay down his life!! He tells Towa to stay with the MC and Ren because he thought they would have a better chance if he distracted Oto! His final words before Towa breaks the tank is that it's up to Towa now! And I think he knew Towa would most likely pull through, but he was definitely in bad, bad shape beforehand. And what if he didn't have the first aid kit? I don't think it would've changed his actions.
It's just. I want him to take better care of himself. I want him to value himself outside of the joking contexts we always see. Outside of the context of the park and the anomalies in his care. I want him to be able to rely on Ren and Towa more often, because right now he does tend to take the fall for them more often than not. Towa vists the hill so he stays home instead of asking him to return. Ren wants to work at the diner, so Haru lets him rather than forcing him to quit like he originally tried to.
Haru Sagara you will meet me in the pit (the pit is a nice comfortable bed) and I will beat you to death with my hooves (tuck you in goodnight because you wake up at like 4 in the goddamn morning and go to bed at god knows when if you even manage to ever sleep) (and then cook you a meal since you obviously don't eat enough either given that you have to be like oh don't worry i ate some lettuce and bread)
Stillborn? No, still born au -- Dani Phantom! Clone girl herself. :]
She can't exist in this au. And it's not that I don't want to add her -- although I'll be blunt, I don't, I'll be the first to admit that I think she's more often than not nothing more than a narrative deadweight used to prop up Danny and I don't like adding characters as props -- but her existence quite literally goes against and muddies the Vlad and Danny dynamic I have for this au. Ellie's existence in canon itself states that she was created -- and Danny's other clones too -- because Vlad gave up on trying to convert him to his side and decided to just make a son instead.
Something that just, doesn't happen in the stillborn-still born au. See, for folks who are only just hearing about this au or didn't see my post about Vlad in this au, he and Danny have a complicated love-hate relationship where they mutually want to adopt each other, but their morals and way of doing things -- mainly Vlad's insistence on getting revenge against the Fentons -- gets in the way of them being able to do that in full.
Vlad knows Danny wants him to adopt him, and is only fighting him on it because he refuses to let Vlad kill the Fentons for essentially killing the both of them. He's succeed in 50% of his goal. Canon Vlad never even made it to 1%. With that in mind, stillborn Vlad has no reason and sees no reason to clone Danny, he has his son. He just needs to convince him to let him avenge them both.
Dani simply has no place in the stillborn-still born au. And in fact, if Vlad did decide to clone Danny -- for whatever reason, -- it would damage his relationship with Danny damn near beyond repair. That's because Danny would view it the same way he views Damian's existence; as a replacement for himself. He would become beyond furious and hurt, and not for the typical 'I can't believe you cloned me, you creep!' reason, but for a 'I can't believe you cloned me, you said I was your son!' reason.
I am not pulling any punches here when I say Danny wants Vlad to be his dad just as much as Vlad wants Danny to be his son, there's just a lot of factors getting in the way. They are, as the french say, ✨mentally unwell.✨ Danny has a ton of abandonment and trust issues due to his experiences in foster care. He would immediately become jealous, insecure, and incredibly furious and hurt. He'd despise her on principal and want nothing to do with her, or Vlad for that matter. He'd just fucking haaate her. It's not her fault she was made but Danny doesn't really care, he's lashing out and pushing people away because he's been betrayed yet again.
The only way they could get along or for Danny to actually like her in any capacity would be if it was his idea to clone himself. Which is like, kinda obvious but considering most clone plots tend to be non-consensual it's kinda gotta be said. He has to have a hand in creating her, that's the only way I can see him liking her in any way. Or if someone other than Vlad created her. If Vlad clones him though, all bets are off the table and he'll despise her.
TL;DR: Dani can't exist in this au because she goes against the narrative I've got for the two most fucked up half-dead could-be-father-son duo in existence, but if she did exist Danny would despise her.
