kabrin is the bad end for the two of them, especially rin, despite how much she wants it. she is dependent on kabru to be everyone to her. she has no family but him, no friends but him, and everyone she knows on the island, she knows through him. and if they ever got in a fight, those people likely side with him. adding another layer onto her dependency by becoming lovers would only make it worse, make it harder for her to disentangle her life from his without breaking off the relationship completely

kabru is unwilling to give her a hard no, likely out of fear of damaging the relationship (she is one of two people living he considers family, and he also loves her and fears hurting her). he deflects and sidesteps when she mocks him in her jealousy. he teases her for liking him when she cant hear. he kisses her when hes most repulsive to her (they both look like fishmen) and when he goes to apologize for that, he happily lets her deflect it and let it go unaddressed. keeping this relationship "safe" and unchanging matters more to him than addressing the fact that he isnt comfortable with her attraction

that unwillingness to address it though keeps rin hoping that one day he'll wake up and see her differently. it keeps her tied and unable to move on. she isnt able to make connections and get support like he is. and because on at least some level she knows he is not and never will be interested in her as a lover, shes unwilling to directly confront him either. if she did just try to ask him out, he would have to tell her no, and then the fantasy ends. and what then? she still doesnt have anyone else, and now shes damaged her relationship with the one person she does have over a love she already knows is unrequited
