When the X-K storyline began I pictured in my head this scene btw Lois and Clark where they compared not seeing this coming and not realizing how unhappy Jon was, to not realizing that Jordan had social anxiety and that his outburst were a result of that, not simple tantrums.

I have heard some ppl say that Clark is being harder on Jon than Jordan after the events of 1x06, bc he saw Jon being well adjusted, relatively responsible, mature and thoughtful teen that usually got along well with and respected Clark as a proof that he had done something right as a parent. Maybe Clark doesn't want to feel any more guilt about his parenting, so he places the anger on Jon.

This anger, combined the fact that Jon continues to cover for the dealer, despite being ordered repeatedly by his parents to tell them who it was, while Jordan, though (at least outwardly) unrepented about playing with glitchy powers, didn't continue lying, hiding or disobeying them after breaking Jon's arm and showing remorse for it. So in a way Jon (albeit for selfless, if not misguided reasons) continues to disobey them, strechting the situation out.

There is also the simple fact that the boys were fairly new to dealing with superpowers in 1x06, but Jon has had 15 years t ok learn that cheating is wrong and drugs are bad. But I feel like that reasoning goes only so far, since they had drilled it into Jordan that ppl could get hurt if he wasn't careful.

Then there is the other angle, that Clois' reaction to Jon's action in s2 is realistic and warranted (though they should also be concerned about WHY he did what he did, and try to help him), and they should have been angrier at Jordan. So the better questions is perhaps why they didn't come down harder on Jordan. Is it bc they thought the guilt of breaking his brother's arm was lesson/punishment enough? If so, why wasn't football season getting cancelled and parents not wanting Jon around their kids, not enough? Is it bc they could sort of relate to losing your temper and/ or wanting to punch a bully, but it is harder for them to grasp Jon's reasoning? Even so, there is the fact that Jordan played while his powers were unstable, which was dangerous and not something he did in the heat of the moments, unlike trying to punch Cutter. I get Lois comforting Jordan. When your kid is this upset about something, even if part of it is his own fault, it's only natural to try and comfort him. But at the same time, they did make it clear from the start that his powers were dangerous, so he shouldn't have had to learn this lesson the hard way, and therefore there should have been more anger involved too.

To be honest, I am not even sure if we are supposed to draw pararells btw how Clois reacted to Jordan's actions in 1x06 and Jon's x- k scandal, even though I do consider Jon taking X-K and Jordan's actions in 1x06 to be each brother's respective "BIG mistakeTM". Jordan's actions were a part of a single episode story, that focused on controlling one's anger, trust and the responsibilities that comes with power. It felt more like a single chapter in Jordan's s1 arc about dealing with his powers. The parental discipline wasn't important. The repercussions of his actions beyond that episode were mostly about Jon's feelings, not the consequences Jordan faced, and when it was, it was about the strain it put on his relationship with Jon, not his parents, or their reaction to his behaviour. Meanwhile, the X-K storyline is a crucial part of Jon's s2 arc, so the fallout is explored in greater detail.

I do think it would be interesting to bring these different reactions up though. If it was accidental on the writers' part, I hope the show at least mention something about in the passing, even if it just Clois saying they thought the boys had learned their lesson about messing around with powers and keeping secrets from their parents after the events of 1x06, and refusing to let Jon go of easy, since maybe if they had been harder on Jordan, then Jordan would have told them about Jon doing X-K right away, and Jon wouldn't have started doing it in the first place, or thought that covering up for a drug dealer selling a substance that gives ppl dangerous powers (and he doesn't know for certain is harmless to the users), is acceptable.

Wow! So it’s been almost 2 years (like literally almost to the day) since I posted "Update 1″, and boy oh boy did a lot of shit happen.

- I went back to work - I never got that internship that woulda changed my life (oh well) - I’ve gotten to travel way more than I woulda thought possible 2 years ago (not the traveling itself, I love to travel and have access/ability to but moreso in terms of the pandemic/state of the world) - I still don’t have a great grasp on my depression. I know I have it. I know. And its definitely a rollercoaster but shit triggers me and idk what to do ya know? I end up feeling like a zombie. - I almost got my dream job. But didn’t. When I say dream job, I mean I have literally been dreaming about it since I was 12 or 13 years old. I reapplied when a reopening was posted but I think I’m just not meant to be. Like that scene in La La Land (god I love La La Land, like its my favorite movie of all time kinda love) when Mia is explaining that maybe her dreams will never pan out bc maybe shes not good enough? Or maybe she’s just one of those (many) people who has always wanted something but its just a pipe dream that needs to be moved on from. Its not like thats what I want, but its whats realistic and you cant be disappointed if your expectation is disappointment, ya know? - My sister moved out and I’m really happy for her but things seem to be happening for her and other people and it feels like everyone around me and I’m just stuck??? I’m not sure theres a better way for me to explain it other than that. Its no ones fault, but everyday of my adult like theres this slight, nagging feeling that my life is simply one long series of unfortunate events. And yes, good things are woven in and its not like everyday is some big, unbearable catastrophe but some days definitely are. I really don’t know how else to explain it. I think its beyond depression. I’d never hurt myself or someone else but I had this shit realization the other day that I don’t remember the last time I was like really, truly, unbelievably happy (not just with one thing, or day, or event) but like GENUINELY happy in life. And I don’t know that I ever will be again. Idk I sound so shitty rn. - I hate my job but love the people. I also have no other options in life it feels like. WHAT DO I DO?!

Anyways the absolute lunacy of the bullets above, I’m trying to move on in/through life as well as possible. And I wanna become better. In all facets. I gained a lot weight back. Which makes me angry and disappointed. My highest ever was 197 and the other day I was 195 again. Again. Can you believe that shit? My family while I love them are bad influences and have been for a really, really long time. I feel like I just give in bc 1) their expectation is that I’m fat and thats never gonna change so who are you kidding and 2) were all doing it (eating and being fat) so who cares? and 3) its like they think im judging them or being unfair to them when I wanna better myself. Idk. Its not intentionally malicious but the consequences feel dire.

SO ANYWAYS!!!!!!!! God I need to learn to shut up. I’ve lost 3lbs in the last week and back to 192. Slowly making progress but FOR REAL THIS TIME. And I know I said that last time, but circumstances are different and theres no more excuses.

On that note I’m gonna go to Safeway rn and go buy some fruit bc I’m hungry and if I wanna eat thats what I’m gonna let myself eat. I know I shouldnt starve but also eating like a piggly wiggly has so far gotten me no where.

AHHHH FLAMBERGE!!! I actually have not thought of a lot for her so these are all on the fly and really fun!!!!

Headcanon A (realistic): her hair is half stylistic choice, half side effect of her fighting style - with the way she goes around swinging a flaming sword, she can't afford it to be too long or else she cuts it off in uneven chunks. Her sisters helped her with her current hairstyle, and also help trim off damaged ends on the rare occasions it continues to happen.

Headcanon B (while it may not be realistic it is hilarious): She has a bad habit of hiding things in her hat. Usually things she wants to smuggle back into her room, whether it's forbidden snacks, some cute toy she found…. frogs. It's a habit that leads to more consequences than anyone at the Mage house would like.

Headcanon C (heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends): (quick infodump bc asker is not super familiar w mage sisters) Flamberge originally died in a fire, and was brought back with magic as a fire elemental in correlation to her death.

As a result of this, she is keenly aware of the dangers of her fire, and she tries to be careful of whom she uses it on, avoiding hurting her sisters or anything else she may not have any intentions against. However, accidents happen, and she's not extremely precise or focused, it's not uncommon for things to get caught in the crossfire and she often fails to realize in the heat of the moment until it's too late. (Puns intended)

She mourns innocents that she kills with it, a mixture of genuine heartbreak of her actions and memories of her own death and emotions thereof interposing themselves on current moments.

Headcanon D (unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.): She has a soft spot for small animals and cute things, and is often bringing them home with her to show to her sisters. However, she's not great with them or with identifying them, and will often end up bringing home things like Scarfies before they manage to escape her grasp. Chaos ensues.

SO MUCH... but boy they will not admit it!! but yeah i definitely think they have a lot of... inadequacy issues? they put a lot of worth into feeling useful and they can’t ever seem to do anything right once the campaign got started. after the temple, their curse grew a lot so they got worse at magic AND they seemed to lose a lot of their social skills/ability to flirt well so that made them feel REAL BAD and real useless

what’s harder for them to admit tho is that they dislike their selfishness? they hate that they left their mentor in prison and haven’t been able to bail him out since due to their selfish spending. they hate that they stole from the mummy and nearly got the party killed. they hate that they can’t seems to be a good person like the party wants them to be cause they’re so selfish.

ofc they hide this under a THICK layer of narcissism but boy does this cowboy have a lot of issues

15. do they trust their party? why or why not?

yes they do, a little too much actually! pip is a very trusting (and gullible) person and despite the fact that the party hasn’t always been the best to them they fully trust that they know what’s best for them! that’s why they genuinely want to become a better person and want to take the party’s advice, bc they think that they know what they’re talking about much more than pip does. they also don’t believe that the party will ever betray them

that being said tho, a lot of their actions betray a lack of trust? pip’s self-preservation instinct is VERY strong, and their first instinct is that the party will not protect them and they have to take care of themself. and, if they slip up, they don’t think the party will forgive them (hence why they tried to avoid the party after the mummy fight...)

19. what haunts them? what doesn’t?

the big one? abandoning their mentor (han) in prison. it was a selfish whim of a rebellious teenager and it left them in a guilt spiral that they are still dealing with. another big one is turning sage (our former dragonborn rogue) into stone, they feel so goddamn bad about that!!

more literally, fucking crows?? pip’s nightmares and even waking hours are haunted by black birds that seem to like them a lot but just scare the shit out of them :’^)

as for what doesn’t haunt them.... the one time they killed someone lmao. it’s what got both pip and han arrested, and what led to pip abandoning han in prison, but that abandonment is what haunts them most, not actually killing someone! good job pip

jk yes but also i think they just crave friendship? they want to be on equal footing with someone who cares about them and doesn’t just use them like they are used to;; that’s why they are so desperate for the party to like them!!

they’re a very self-centered person so i’m not sure if they worry-worry for their party members as much as they worry about what their party members are going through means for them. that being said, i think they do worry about ahu considering they have no fucking clue what’s going on with him despite knowing that there definitely IS something to be worried about?? plus they don’t really like the fact that they can’t seem to get through to him at all

36. what’s a secret they’ve kept?

a lot.... i think a big one is that onyx talked to them and promised to spare their life if they continued casting spells (risking bad wild magic surges) and stopped attempting to prevent the apocalypse.... and they are kinda thinking of agreeing

at this point that party was VERY set on stopping the apocalypse, so yep definitely a secret they wanted to keep from them!

48. what do they see in their future?

pip will hold onto the hope that one day they will be rich and live a life of luxury...

i think a big thing is they see themself bailing han out of prison and then han being SO GRATEFUL that he finally loves and respects pip the way that pip wants. due to events in game tho they have some doubts that han is even alive anymore (haha)... tho they are fully in denial of that

realistically tho? i don’t know if pip has much hope for themself beyond just continuing to fuck and steal like they have been in the years before the campaign started;; they’re really grasping at straws TRYING to find someone to hold onto (preferably the party, but possibly other changelings or followers of onyx) so they don’t have to be alone anymore

57. what makes them angry?

i think pip gets pissed off at A LOT of petty shit, like people not drinking with them or their god (onyx) fucking with them or not being the hottest one in the party but i’m having a hard time seeing pip getting genuinely angry at something? i think when something very, emotionally straining happens that might make them angry pip tends to get scared and stressed instead, and just withdraws instead and starts drinking

58. what do they think their role in the party is? what is their role in actuality?

they think they are the powerful magic man and smooth talker of the party!! and the hot one ofc

tragically they are none of these, they’ve kinda just ended up as the hot mess that everyone has to babysit so they don’t get into trouble :’^)

oof that’s a toughy bc pip is a coward and tends to be scared in most fights!! i think the mummy fight scared them a lot not bc of the fight itself but bc of the consequences... they knew that the whole fight was entirely their fault AND completely avoidable so they knew the party was going to hate them afterwards!

also i don’t know if it counts as a fight but the incident with the robot that tried to remove their wild magic curse scared them a lot... i think it was the first time they grasped how deeply fucked up their magic was plus it just hurt A LOT

69. how would they describe their party members?

sable: friend?? maybe? sable is the one that seems to like them most so in turn pip likes her the most! they feel very bad about they fact that sable nearly died bc of their selfishness but it’s not something they really want to admit to her... sable did try and help them become a good person too, so they definitely take her suggestions seriously in pursuit of trying to get her to like them again

still doesn’t know why she wouldn’t drink with them that one time

zylus: pip respects zylus and wants zylus to like them! i think it’s a lot less clear to pip whether zylus likes him as compared to sable, since he can be a bit stern w them but it won’t stop pip from trying to worm their way into his heart. they want to help zylus find his mom in an attempt to become his friend!

qiralei: scares the everloving SHIT out of them!! qiralei always seems to know the right buttons to push to get pip real fucked up like, emotionally. plus there’s the fact that pip fully knows qiralei holds a grudge against them for ditching her that one time very early on in the temple... that being said, she is where pip will go if they need any advice on divine matters!

ahu: i think ahu just confuses pip A LOT. as a very charismatic person who’s used to getting people to like them and open up they are very confused as to why ahu will not?? so they just keep pushing harder and ahu closes up even more. and then there was the night watch post-mummy fight... hoo boy. ahu was PISSED OFF at pip and pip just didn’t make a good attempt to stop him. i think after that pip is more intimidated by ahu but also more interested in knowing wtf is going on with him

they are also kinda jealous bc ahu is better looking than them, quit stealing pip’s thunder!!

You've been very critical of Cersei, especially in response to Tumblr often defending her in more ways than she probably should. In the same vein, do you think Daenerys is as bad or ambitious as Cersei? Are they meant to be parallels or foils?

I... don’t know if it’s like that for various reasons starting with the fact that cersei is a villain and dany is not and I think that what they have as parallels isn’t really where grrm means to go at, but I’ll try to give the most possible objective answer.

premise: dany is a character I really don’t care much either way about and I don’t remember 60% of her chapters (like, 90% of adwd and for the rest I only remember decently the got stuff and half of asos plus the vision at the end of acok) and I haven’t reread them in ages unless I needed to because a) she’s really not on my radar, b) that’s not the most engaging storyline to me so take my opinions for what they are.

that said:

I don’t think they’re nowhere near the same level because dany actually cares about other people which cersei does not;

also, there’s the angle where imvho dany wants the throne more because of her name/legacy/because viserys wanted it and she grew up with that toxic environment and she’s not actually moving forward bc basically she’s taken on herself what viserys wanted, but if you look at it... tbh I think dany just wants to get back to the house with the red door cuddling her lizards which is also why i think she’s not eventually getting the throne even if she won’t die at the end but that’s beyond the point, while everything cersei does is to get power and fuck everyone else in the way;

which is the other fundamental difference ie cersei doesn’t gaf about anyone else that’s not herself and doesn’t see people’s needs as something she needs to care about, while dany actually does care about other people - admittedly she gets caught up in selfrighteousness about that a lot for that but like... it’s not as if she freed the slaves for that, she really does believe in her cause/in helping others;

now, the thing they have in common imvho that I can see as a pseudo-parallel is that neither of them is actually good at ruling - or better, cersei is plain bad because she thinks that she’s her father and she’s not and she doesn’t listen to other people while dany has good intentions but doesn’t have one single adviser who’s actually trained for politics and is bad at seeing the great picture never mind diplomacy never mind that she hasn’t grasped the concept that you can’t just dismantle an entire established system with fire and blood even if it’s wrong (ie: everything that happens post-conquer of mereen is basically the realistic consequences of swooping in with dragons without looking at the entire situation around the place you’re supposed to conquer), which means that cersei’s stint at ruling and dany’s are both not good (and if adwd/affc had been one single book probably it would have been a more blatant parallel than it is with the books separated) so like... they could have been foils in that sense but if they had been in the same book it would have been more obvious but I mean... at worst it would have shown that dany isn’t a good ruler but means well while cersei isn’t a good ruler and.. well, means well for herself;

that said dany’s ambition, as stated before, is her brother’s ambition more than hers and it’s more about her birthright than what she actually wants, so i don’t think you can compare it with cersei’s because cersei again wants power for herself and like... she does want that;

I don’t think dany and cersei are even remotely on the same level morally because as stated dany cares about other people and cersei doesn’t;

also, you can dislike dany or not care, but... she’s written to be sympathetic, while cersei is not, in the sense that while you can find sympathetic someone the narrative doesn’t present as such and viceversa (for example with dany I’m not particularly interested so like... I care but I don’t relate to her nor feel anything that much specific except that I don’t dislike her but that’s it even if she’s written to be relatable/sympathetic while with cersei people see traits they find relatable/sympathetic so they empathize with her even if the narrative is very clear about how cersei is a negative character, which ofc is their prerogative bc everyone feels about characters in their own way), objectively dany is not coded negatively even if she has faults while cersei is coded negatively because she’s a villain and there’s nothing in her chapters that suggests that she’s going to change or that she wants to or that she would care for that, so ‘as bad as cersei’ is.... not correct because they’re nowhere near the same level when it comes to their personalities and they don’t act for the same reasons;

also: re cersei my problem is that people excuse everything she does on account of things that each single woman in these books has to deal with but somehow cersei is untouchable even when she’s done far worse than most other characters and without even taking dany into account (bc I think discourse on dany is extremely polarized in fandom and I don’t agree with either the FLAWLESS HERO side nor the OMG SHE’S THE VILLAIN side - I think she’s trying to do good but being a queen is not her life call and she’s there to deconstruct very specific tropes while being written sympathetically, so I’m like... not touching that, but people do criticize dany even if 80% of the time it’s not for reasons that are in the text but nvm), but like... if you objectively compare what catelyn has done textually and what cersei has done textually and see what fandom thinks of either in general it’s obvious that there is a strong double standard and I’m personally extremely tired of being classified as some kinda internalized misogynist because I don’t like cersei when people shit on catelyn for actual misogynistic reasons (because sorry but ‘she’s such a bitch she should have gone back home to her smaller children why did she even think she could help out robb’ when cat’s smarter than 90% of the other povs combined is a goddamned misogynist argument and guess what half of this fandom happily partakes in it to say one, and it’s not even the start of it). like, my issue with cersei is that people don’t discuss her critically nor accept that she’s a bad guy objectively - subjectively they can think whatever they want, but if you’re selling me your analysis as meta/STUFF THAT’S IN THE TEXT then it should be in the text and passing cersei as some feminist hero that is crushing the patriarchy is not what the text says;

I don’t have 99% of the same issues with dany bc as stated I don’t go there, idc about her and I disagree anyway with 98% of the takes I see concerning dany anyway but at least no one says that if you dislike dany you automatically don’t give a damn about women but that’s another problem;

but tldr the way dany is discussed in fandom is not the same cersei is discussed in fandom and I disagree with both discourses bc I think dany’s is too polarized in two opposite ways that don’t cover it imvho and cersei is polarized in one direction and that is my issue with cersei discourse basically;

I don’t think these two are comparable on a moral scale bc as stated dany has morals and cersei... doesn’t, on a narratively sympathy scale because grrm wants you to sympathize with dany at least to a level while not hiding that she has faults same as everyone in these books while cersei is written as a straight-up negative character that has possibly relatable reasons for being like that and which people can see themselves in, but she’s not meant to be someone the story sympathizes with - you’re meant to feel sorry for her at some point (I guess because I’m not the right person to ask that question) and you can absolutely find her relatable, but we’re not talking about people with the same set of morals, values and life targets anyway so tldr the answer is that at most they’re foils in the way grrm explores how they both fail at their first try at ruling (and for cersei most likely the last) but dany’s meant to be sympathetic, cersei isn’t;

I think they’re parallels in that sense but tbf I think that cersei has quiiite more foiling going on with cat in the sense of characters you contrast with each other who are starting from similar premises, and with dany I think it all begins and dies with their being queens but tbf I also don’t think it’s dany’s endgame and cersei is dying because she’s power-hungry so if dany lives renouncing it and cersei dies embracing it it’s definitely a foil for that, but like... they also aren’t directly connected by the narrative and I absolutely don’t think dany is younger and more beautiful which would actually connect them, idt they’re actually ever meeting, so... there is a parallel/foil but just on that one aspect. for the rest they’re wildly different imvho.
