Sup gang, I have more doodles to shaaaaare~~
So, I recently got Glisten, and he is so fun to play as. So fun to play as in fact that I constantly play distractor on accident! It's so fun (lying)!! Both images are based on a run my friend and I had together with a few randoms in a public server. It was the farthest I've ever gotten and a blast.
You ain't never seen a distractor like meee✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
On the topic of running, here are some doodles of Shrimpo and Pebble getting into conflict. Peb protects his owner, and if that means attacking the only dude who could pummel him in hand-to-hand combat, so be it lol.
Luckily Shrimpo doesn't like getting bit, so Dandy and Pebble get to live another day.
Below are a toooooon of shinyshrimp doodles (and a slightly suggestive joke so tread with caution lol):
Mmmmm gay men.
Glisten: "I couldn't imagine you getting any redder but you surprise me~" Shrimpo: "AAAAAAAAAA-"
What's gayer? Being gay? Or what these two have going on?
Domestic slice-of-life stuff. I think Shimpo has insomnia but tends to find comfort and sleep in human contact. Toodles has nightmares on occasion and appreciates snuggling when they occur. Glisten isn't the cuddly type, but when the people in his life need comfort, he's willing to put up with the cuddles lol. Also Glisten sleeps with an ungodly number of pillows.
Also, a funny idea I had about how short Shrimpo is compared to Glisten. That's how Glisten sees him lol.
And also..
I caved.
Here.
Shinyshrimp child upon ye🫳🫳🫳🫳
Dandy: "How the F*CK did this happen?!"
Her name is Shimmer, and she's based on an Asian Glass Shrimp (for hopefully obvious reasons). She's a sweet girl who is really really nosy lol. Just imagine Gwen from the movie Migration lol.
Also, no toons have ever created a toon themselves (it's only done if the humans working there made one by using the ichor machines), so Dandy is kinda flabbergasted about the whole thing. Ima leave it up to interpretation how they did it (cuz I have my personal hc that I'll share if people show interest lol) but it's not sexual lol.
Anyways pookies, have a good one!!
#i knew that glisten was going to be a pain to get used to for me but i didn't expect to be an accidental distractor lol#it's kinda fun tho#and a mega flex#also all the shinyshrimp stuff was drawn bc i love them sm they my pooks#if people fw shimmer i'll draw her more cuz i have some things planned lol#it has to do with toodles and pebble~~~~#but anyways#dandy's world#dandy's world fanart#dandy's world oc#dandys world#dandy's world astro#dandy's world rodger#dandy's world sprout#dandy's world glisten#dandy's world shrimpo#dandy's world tisha#dandy's world cosmo#dandy's world pebble#dandy's world toodles#dandy's world finn#dandy's world flutter#dandy's world poppy#dandy's world gigi#glisten the mirror#shrimpo the shrimp#toodles the eight ball#pebble the dog#shinyshrimp#glisten x shrimpo

Hot take:
Crosshair does not have the Imperial disillusionment and redemption arc of The Bad Batch
Emerie does.
Crosshair has an arc for sure yes but it's not that.
I was thinking about this scene:
and how it got right what this scene kinda didn't:
(It was so close but then bad writing decided to undercut the moment with a joke rip)
And I think it's really interesting that these characters who were more or less raised into the Empire/First Order and chose to leave it are all directly asked why.
But take a look at Crosshair's answers in comparison:
Different context for the asking, yes, but still, compare that to clones like Howzer, Cody, Slip and Cade who left or turned against the Empire because they knew what the Empire is doing is wrong and they weren't just going to blindly follow orders:
Crosshair - Loyalty, Purpose, and Survival
Crosshair didn't choose to join the Empire (though the show isn't very clear or consistent about how much control the inhibitor chips have) but he did, for whatever reason, choose to stay. By the end of S1 we know his chip has been removed and as he definitively says "This is who I am." There were likely still other influences on his decision, but listen to how he talks about the Empire in the S1 finale:
Hunter: Crosshair, I've seen what the Empire is doing. Occupying planets and silencing anyone who stands against them. You know it's not right. Crosshair: You still don’t see the bigger picture, but you will. Hunter: Can't you see they're using you?
Crosshair: We’re not like the regs, we never have been. We’re superior. The Empire can’t protect the galaxy without strength, this is what we were made for. Think of all we could do, together!
Crosshair: You all are meant for more than drifting through the galaxy. It’s time to stop running. Join the Empire, and you will have purpose again.
Hunter: They destroyed an entire city! Crosshair: They did what needed to be done. Kamino, regs, the Republic, that time is over. The Empire will control the entire galaxy, and I am going to be a part of it. Hunter: Don't fool yourself. All you'll ever be to them is a number.
He undeniably knows what the Empire is doing, but he does not care. In fact it sure sounds like he actually supports it and finds self-meaning in it. Hunter spends those episodes trying to convince him it's wrong, he doesn't change his mind. In the end they offer him an out and he doesn't take it.
Wrecker: You coming with us? Crosshair: None of this changes anything. Hunter: You offered us a chance, Crosshair. This is yours. Crosshair: I made my decision.
The next we see Crosshair in "The Solitary Clone" (S2:E3) he follows orders and shoots the Desix governor, right after Cody heartbreakingly tries to do what's right and find a peaceful solution.
Cody: Tell me something, Crosshair. This new Empire, are we making the galaxy better? Crosshair: We’re soldiers, we do what needs to be done. Cody: You know what makes us different from battle droids? We make our own decisions, our own choices. And we have to live with them too.
After this (glorious!) conversation, Crosshair stays. Maybe this began to seed some doubts, but he actually smiles a few scenes later when Rampart assigns him another mission. It seems like for him it truly is as he said in S1:E1 (chip not enhanced yet but still influencing him enough for his brothers to notice he's acting strange):
Crosshair: Republic, Empire... what's the difference.
Crosshair: Orders are orders.
This unethical mission that finally pushed Cody over the edge does not change Crosshair's mind about the Empire, at least not enough for him to take action.
But what does?
Mayday: And here we are, the survivors. Combat troopers stuck babysitting cargo shipments. Crosshair: Mission’s a mission. Mayday: Yeah, I used to say the same thing.
Mayday: After all the clones have done, all we’ve sacrificed. We’re good soldiers, we followed orders. And for what?
This mission has nothing to do with how the fascist Empire treats the galaxy, it's about how they treat their soldiers. It's about how Mayday loyally fought and served his whole life and Lieutenant Nolan let him die
Lt Nolan: He served his purpose as a soldier of the Empire. Crosshair: You could have saved him! Lt Nolan: Perhaps you didn’t hear me, he is expendable, as are you.
Crosshair thought he could find purpose within the Empire, and Nolan shows him exactly what that will be.
His turning point is accompanied with this powerful visual of the ice vulture, a symbol (and threat) of death, and also set up within the episode a symbol of survival:
Mayday: Vicious creatures, but you have to admire ‘em. They find a way to survive.
This critical moment (that gives me chills, oof this episode is a masterpiece!) comes right after Nolan calls him expendable and directly threatens him:
Lt Nolan: And if you speak to me again with such disrespect I'll see to it you meet a similar fate, clone.
then Crosshair sees the vulture's shadow and turns to Mayday's dead body (ahh visual storytelling my beloved) then makes his decision:
Crosshair turns against the Empire not because he believes Hunter was right about this:
Hunter: I've seen what the Empire is doing ... You know it's not right.
but because he was right about this:
Hunter: All you'll ever be to them is a number.
Redemption (both in fiction and irl in my humble opinion) comes with making amends and reparations (which is why death 'redemptions' bother me so much but that's a rant for another time). Unlike Emerie, Crosshair never explicitly denounces the Empire or his own actions within it. He never says anything to specifically show if and how his views have changed from what he said on Kamino. He makes amends with his family (sending the warning message, helping Omega escape, making up with Hunter) but that's about it. The most we get in terms of acknowledgement is this:
Crosshair: I thought I knew what I was getting into with the Empire. I thought I was being a good soldier. Hunter: Nobody really understood what was happening back then. Crosshair: I’ve... done things. I’ve made mistakes. Hunter: I have regrets too, Crosshair. All we can do is keep trying to be better, and who knows there just might be hope for us yet.
Which is nice and all but it's more about them making up as brothers so it's way too excusing tbh ("no one knew what was happening back then" ummm? "The Empire will control the entire galaxy, and I am going to be a part of it" remember? And even if at first Crosshair was being controlled by the chip, the fact that he chose to stay after it was removed* means he condones and is therefore still accountable for those actions).
There's also a bit of self-destructive guilt:
Crosshair: Omega, don't risk anything for me. I belong in here.
Crosshair: Omega needs you both. So I’m doing this alone, it’s what I deserve. Hunter: Don’t even think about plan 99, Crosshair. Omega needs all of us.
(which thank you Hunter for pushing back on the death redemption bs and oh look is that a wrap up for the purpose thing?)
But there's no action taken on his part to make up for what he's done or to stand against the Empire (aside from the bare minimum of help with Tantiss, only after it became personally relevant, which like yeah he had trauma to deal with but still).
While I do think the implications/follow-up of Crosshair's turn should have been handled better in S3 (like rip Howzer! he deserved an apology, but that's a rant for another time), I don't necessarily** think this arc is a bad writing choice. It's just saying different things than we expect:
Maybe Crosshair's story is not about standing up against an unjust system, like we see with many other characters (who deserved more screen time but that's a rant for another timeeee). Maybe his story is about how even those who are loyal to the Empire, who actually believe in it, still suffer under and within it's rule. Not to garner sympathy, but to show that there is no winning.
Crosshair has another 'so what changed' convo in S3:E14 with Rampart, in which they draw parallels to each other:
Rampart: You used to believe good soldiers followed orders. Crosshair: Depends on who's giving them. The Empire betrayed us both. Rampart: And you think you can fight them? That's not you. You're like me, loyal to no one but yourself. Crosshair: I've changed.
(note how he says who's giving the orders, not what the orders are)
"Loyal to no one but yourself" describes Rampart much more than Crosshair, since we often saw Crosshair pride himself as a loyal soldier of the Empire whereas we saw Rampart abuse power to be self-serving within the Empire (like when he killed Wilco to save face). But they were both betrayed either way. Vice Admiral Rampart, snively Imperial opportunist through-and-through, shouts "I was following orders!" as he is arrested for the Empire's purposes. (Edit: and where Crosshair rejected the Empire and found new purpose fighting for his family, Rampart was still self-serving in the finale. He still tries to gain power for himself and he gets his comeuppance).
Even Hemlock, the final boss immoral Imperial scientist, who has to be benefiting the most from this system, echoes the expendability idea:
Hemlock: What I am working on is beyond your understanding. Something so vital to the Empire it makes me indispensable.
Then there's CX-2, also set up as a parallel/foil to Crosshair (fight me), who in the end is discarded as no more than a weapon, a tool that served it's purpose, showing us what would have become of Crosshair if he had stayed.
There is no winning in the Empire. Loyalty is not rewarded, it "doesn't go both ways." Everyone has to fight for their value. Even high ranking individuals** who for a time benefit from the injustice, in the end are just pawns to be used up and cast aside at a whim for the Emperor's gain. Even people who are motivated by self-interest alone cannot survive within this system, the only viable option in this galaxy is to fight the Empire and dismantle that system. (unless you conveniently find a magically safe island to hide away on but that's a rAnT fOr AnOtHeR tImE)
Which brings us back to...
Emerie - Cooperation, Compassion, and Choice
(Okay this post has already gotten away from me but I still want to talk about her to show the contrasts.)
Emerie may not have been given a lot of screen time to really flesh out her development, but there is a lot that is pretty clearly implied with her:
Crosshair: They’ll never turn her [Omega] over. Hemlock: They don’t have a choice. She is a clone, and therefore Imperial property. *Camera cuts to an angle more centered on Emerie’s face*
Crosshair: Give me your access card! Emerie: It won’t get you outside!
Emerie: I tried to warn him what would happen if he did not cooperate with the Doctor.
Emerie: Prisoner? Omega, you are no such thing. It will take time to adjust, but you will acclimate. It is far safer in here than out there.
Emerie: You should go back to your room. Crosshair: You mean her cell?
Emerie: Why children? Hemlock: Children are easier to attain and more agreeable to the subjugations. They are unaware of why they are here and what they possess.
Emerie: They're children. Like I was... Was your plan to discard them too? Nala Se: The Empire will keep them in order to control them.
We don't know a lot about Emerie's background, but it's clear that she had a lot less choice than Crosshair and less opportunity or ability to leave. Unlike Crosshair, we never directly hear Emerie's views of the Empire (and she was most likely 'taken under Hemlock's wing' before the Empire even came to power), but lets look at how she talks about the Tantiss:
"Remain calm. Cooperate and you might survive."
"Don't make this worse, Crosshair! There is no escape!"
"All of us serve a purpose here."
"The Doctor will inform me, if it's necessary."
"It's best not to ask questions."
"Escape is not possible, Omega. This is for your own good."
She honestly does the best she can within the system she is also trapped in. She tries to help Crosshair, Omega, and the vault kids in the only way she knows how (warns Crosshair about the hounds and security, tries to protect Omega from Hemlock, tells Scorch his "actions were extreme" with Jax, insists on overseeing Bayrn's retrieval, double checks his m-count (to give him an out), and tries to find out where he came from). When she gives Omega, and later Eva, the doll, I think it shows just how little she really is able to do here (and it's kinda heartbreaking imo).
The framing of this shot especially (after Jax's escape attempt) visually shows how Emerie herself is trapped/imprisoned:
Despite the fact that very little of this is Emerie's fault, she has very little power and she is doing all she can, the narrative does not excuse her role in the Empire:
Nala Se: What will you do, Emerie? Emerie: There is nothing I can do. I don't have that kind of power. Nala Se: Don't you?
Emerie: I- I was doing my job. Echo: Yeah, I’ve heard that before. You’re a clone. How can you be part of this?
These fighting-the-Bystander-Effect conversations parallel these exchanges:
Hunter: We made a choice, and so did you. Crosshair: Soldiers follow orders. Hunter: Blind allegiance makes you a pawn.
Crosshair: We’re soldiers, we do what needs to be done. Cody: You know what makes us different from battle droids? We make our own decisions, our own choices. And we have to live with them too.
which did not change Crosshair's mind. And honestly, all respect to Echo's disappointed mom glare™ but I think it's clear Emerie had already made her decision, she just needed help to actually be able to do anything about it. When she stopped Echo, with her voice wavering on the verge of tears (ahhh v good voice acting), she clearly had no intention of turning him in. She's on her own in the Empire's most secure facility with very little resources, if she had tried anything on her own she most likely would have failed and been killed
Omega: Emerie, you don't have to do this. Emerie: (sigh) I’m sorry, but I do.
but as soon as she is enabled by an ally, she immediately turns around to help: giving information and getting Echo through security, helping the kids escape, and giving Omega the tablet that allows them to free the other clone prisoners.
Where Crosshair's turn is accompanied by the symbolic imagery of the ice vulture, Emerie's is the removal of her (literally rose-tinted!) glasses:
Symbolizing how she has shed her previous views/indoctrination that altered her perception of the Empire and blinded her to it's wrongs. It's disillusionment.
Emerie's story shows us that even those who are raised and indoctrinated into this system can, should, and will escape (with needed help). Even those who did not choose to be apart of the Empire and are not making the decisions still have the responsibility and ability to act on what they know is right.
Emerie, whose name means 'Home strength' 'Brave' and 'Powerful', and "reflects the importance of leadership and authority in the workplace".***
While Emerie is only in one more scene after her turn, so the wrap up is a bit rushed, she still very simply does what Crosshair does not:
Emerie: Because I was wrong about this place. And I'm trying to do the right thing.
Echo: I’m sure Senator Chuchi would find what you have to say very helpful for our cause. Emerie: I have a lot to make up for. I’d like to help out however I can.
She admits wrong, takes accountability, commits to making amends, and leaves with Echo to go take on the Empire (which hopefully we will get to actually see more of some day).
So, in short, she's showing us how redemption is done right!
---
Notes:
*Whether this writing choice was good/logical/in-character or not is another discussion entirely, but I'm going off of what we were given, what the show is presenting in the canon text and (reasonably inferred/intentional) subtext. Crosshair is pretty multifaceted and I could only touch on so much here. There's a lot of ways to interpret his character/choices, but I tried to avoid the realm of speculation or fanon explanations (even if they sometimes make more sense lol).
**History and political theory are not my area of expertise at all, so I have NO idea how well this aligns with real-world fascism stuff and therefore what implications this storytelling choice could have. I think the message of like 'if you think you could survive or gain power by doing what the Empire/fascist system wants you are wrong' could be good (like how everyone is actually harmed by the patriarchy type of a thing), but I hesitate bc maybe there are those who would benefit, since it's a hierarchal system, right? If anyone more knowledgeable than me has incite to share, by all means
Either way, I do think it works in-story and in-universe though. It's just in the execution. The main problem (even from a strictly theme/character arc stand point) is the lacking follow-up/consequences for Crosshair in S3. Like you gave your character accountability by removing the chip and I think that's great setup for an arc but you gotta follow through with that and actually hold him accountable!
***I'm always curious when clones have 'normal' names, like why did they chose the name Emerie of all things? So I looked it up. Idk how reliable sources are for name meanings so take it with a grain of salt but it's still fun. Fits pretty well, and clones names have definitely had significant meanings in the past (like how Rex and Jesse both mean 'king') so I'm pretty sure it was intentional.
Anyway, thanks for coming to my tedtalk
#this fandom has been SLEEPING on Emerie's arc yall!#like look at her I LOVE her#I was kinda neutral about her on the first watch but now i'm realizing just how sad and scary her story is#she's honestly pretty cool and interesting as a character and i do hope we get to see more of her at some point#also the outpost is such good writing ahhh if only the whole show had the same quality#sorry crosshair girlies your blorbo is kinda a fascist?#like we don't judge a character based off who they were/what they said at the BEGINNING of their arc#they have to start somewhere to end up somewhere else#it's how well the writing executes that transition that matters#but also where did he end up? really :/#star wars#the bad batch#tbb analysis#tbb critical#those rants may come we'll see#star wars finn#emerie karr#tbb crosshair#arc trooper echo#captain howzer#commander cody#commander mayday#tbb cx 2#writing#writing pet peeves#character analysis#redemption arcs

Deep Water - Part 4
cw: the ocean, animal carcasses, rotting, malnourishment, more tags to be added as the story continues
merman x fem reader
Word count: 3k
read on ao3
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
You woke up disoriented on an unfamiliar floor, the steady sounds of snoring filling your ears.
You turned to see Finn, still fast asleep as you rose from your little spot on the floor. He was bundled up in blankets, his head just barely peeking out of them enough to breathe.
You didn’t want to bother him. He’d done so much for you, the last thing you wanted to do was to disturb his rest.
In your attempt to begin to get ready without disturbing him, you managed to get your feet tangled in the loose blankets below you and tumble back to the floor.
You quickly righted yourself just in time to see Finn begin to shift, waking fitfully.
He groaned, eyes barely peeking open to look up at you. “Is… Oh. I forgot you were here.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you.”
He tried to wave dismissively but in his half-asleep state, it looked more like he attempted to clumsily swat a fly out of the air.
He rose from the bed slowly, a little unsteady on his feet. “I’ll find you some clothes.”
You took him in as he moved to the drawers beside the bed. He was a little scrawnier than the average man working on the docks and only a few inches taller than you, but still, you were sure that his clothes would fit you awkwardly, if at all. “You really don’t have to do that, my clothes are mostly dry now.”
“Nonsense, I have just the thing for you.”
And then he pulled out a dress, a practical one with reasonable skirts and allowance for movement. A dress you’d seen before.
You reeled back a little as you asked, “Why do you have my sister’s clothes?”
It came out harsher than you’d intended it to. Maybe the shock was to blame, you weren’t certain.
He deflated at your words, crumpling in on himself, his shoulders slumping as his face fell.
“I should have told you,” he said, visibly mortified. “I know I should have. You just… you look just like her.”
The realization hit you instantly. “You two were…”
“I wasn’t trying to replace her,” he said, rushing in to cut you off. “I mean, I couldn’t replace her even if I did want to. It was just… it was nice to see you. I could almost pretend, just a little.”
The more he tried to justify it, the more your heart sank. “How long were you together?” you asked, your voice flat and distant.”
“Years. She was everything to me.” His voice was low and sad, sadness that you were sure was for her and not for you, standing betrayed in front of him. Why would it be for you? How selfish could you be?
You almost wished he’d yelled at you. Then maybe it wouldn’t make you feel so bad. He seemed devastated and apologetic and all the things he could be and yet now that you knew you could just tell. You could see him looking at you like you were her, with faux, unearned affection in his eyes behind the heartbreak.
It made you furious. You wanted to throw something, to shout at him, to demand to be seen as a person, to be removed from her shadow.
But he was grieving, just as you were. Probably more.
The least you could to was be kind.
So you gave him a half-hearted, soft pat on his shoulder and tried to paint as much sympathy accross your face as you could manage.
“You didn’t mean any harm,” you said, and you knew it was true.
It still stung.
And then you took the dress from his hands, his grip softening as you reached for it, and you left.
You found an empty room to change in and went off to work as quickly as you could.
The next few weeks passed quickly, settling into an easy routine. Without Finn hovering over your shoulder as you worked, you were free to move quickly and mindlessly, doing your job exactly as intended and no more.
You stopped by to see Simon almost every day. The days you couldn’t, held up late at the docks, he no longer threw a complete fit. There was huffing and pouting but he hadn’t kindaped you again and you considered that progress.
In fact, after the stunt he’d pulled, he seemed hesitant to even get near you, like even his presence was tainted now. He was more careful than he’d been, asking before he did anything.
You supposed it was preferable over the alternative.
You and Finn had grown distant. He was clearly trying to give you space but you couldn’t quite breach that gap and bring yourself to talk to him so instead you let him fade away, sharing quiet polite smiles when you saw one another and nothing more. Your only real friend here now gone. Other than your monster that you still caught glimpses of below the docks, no matter how many times you warned him that it was ill-advised.
You didn’t mind going to see him. There was very little understanding between you but it felt nice, having him so eager to meet with you every day, shifting uncomfortably in shallow water that he braved for you.
It had been a bad day.
Nothing had happened, not really, but that awful ship was back. Every time you saw it, a wave of nausea overtook you, brought back to you kicking and screaming on the deck, inhaling rain as you huffed in breaths.
Finn had shot you a concerned look or two as he apparently read your nerves off your face, but he had kept his distance, respectful and stomach-churning.
You wanted him to come check in on you, something he clearly wanted to do, but you still refused to go speak with him first. You couldn’t do it, couldn’t return to him like a dog with its tail tucked between its legs, offering yourself as your sister’s replacement if he’d just speak to you.
So instead, at the end of an awful day, you scurried off the docks to your spot, content that you’d at least get to see your siren.
On the shore, where you usually sat, lay the tail end of a sea lion, bloody with bones sticking out, looking almost rotted.
You looked into the water to find amber eyes staring back at you, wide and expectant.
You knew instantly he’d brought it here, though you couldn’t fathom why. It wasn’t a fresh kill, instead looking like it had been pulled off a beach somewhere where it’d washed up.
A sense of shame flickered in his eyes, fighting back a grimance as you noticed it.
“Do you want it?” he asked, head nodding towards the carcass.
“No,” you said, and he reeled back, not looking surprised but seeming upset all the same.
“It’s the best I could do,” he said, eyes downcast. “I’ve been trying to find something better but I’m not built for this.”
His voice was tinged in a sense of bitterness and frustration and you wished you knew what he was talking about so you could comfort him. Or at least understand why he was upset.
“Built for what? Why is this here?”
“It was supposed to be food,” he said with a huff. “I have nothing for you. I can’t provide you anything.”
“Provide me… You don’t need to provide for me, I can get my own food.”
“You shouldn’t have to. I want to… I want to show you I can keep you safe but I can’t. Couldn’t even keep you fed.”
As he spoke, you really took him in, sitting behind a rotting carcass that wasn’t fit for anyone to eat.
What had he been eating if after weeks, this was the best he could bring you?
And then it struck you, the way he’d begun positioning himself in the shallows, stomach carefully down, arms in front of it, shifted away from you.
“Come here,” you said, trying to keep your words soft.
He looked like he was about to cry but he shifted forwards all the same.
You fought back a gasp as he finally let you get a good look at him.
He looked emaciated. Where soft, plump skin used to be, it instead had begun to pull taught over ribs that looked sharper than the human ribs you were accustomed to.
With the new context, you could see it in his face too, his full cheeks beginning to bow in.
“What happened to you?” you asked, cursing yourself that you could have missed this, could have let him keep his distance and hide this from you so easily.
“I’m not good at hunting,” he said, rufusing to meet your gaze.
“You were fine before, what changed?”
He shifted and you could see a war waging inside his head, the conflict written accrosss his features.
You waited, owing him patience at least.
Finally, he seemed to come to a decision and he spoke, still sad and low but with a sense of finality rising behind it.
“We’re not hunters, we’re not built for it. Not fast enough or sharp enough. We’re built to lure in prey but… you’re a person. If I hadn’t stopped to talk to you, you’d just be gone, drowned and devoured, and I wouldn’t even have known that it hurt, let alone… I can’t do it anymore,” his words had shifted from sad and low to frustrated and sharp. “I can’t hunt so I can’t eat fish but I can’t do it anymore. Every time I look at them I keep just seeing you.”
Tears pricked at the corner of your eyes at the thought that you had done this to him. The revelation that he’d been eating humans fell by the wayside at the sight of sad eyes on a gaunt face that used to be warm and soft.
And you couldn’t even do anything about it. You didn’t have the resources to get him fish, not after the measly few weeks you’d spent here. You had barely managed to find yourself lodgings in a grimy old inn, barely eating enough to keep up your strength.
But you had to. You couldn’t just leave him to this, in this situation that you’d dragged him into when you’d gotten thrown off that ship. When on the worst day of your life, he saw easy prey in front of him and decided to be kind.
And then an idea came to you. An awful idea, sure, but the only one you had.
You muttered a quiet “wait here” before you stood up and sprinted back to the dock, knowing you had to catch him before he left.
Finn’s face lit up when he saw you nearing him, relief pulling the tension out of his shoulders and bringing a soft smile to his face.
You grabbed his hand and with a soft noise of confusion escaping him, you dragged him down to your isolated little spot on the beach.
The whole time you pulled him along, as he followed you without question, you tried to think how to explain any of this to him.
You kept moving as you wracked your brains, needing to solve this, needing to know it could be fixed, and you came up with nothing.
Anything would be better than just bringing him in blind, a fact you realized seconds too late, arriving at your spot on the shore.
You saw the panic in Simon’s eyes seconds before disaster hit. Right before Finn noticed him, he was being snatched into the water, pale arms hooked under his armpits, holding him down in the shallows. It seemed mainly like shock and confusion that kept Finn down. Submerged in deep water he wouldn’t stand a chance, but here, in the shallows, against a malnourished and emotional siren; he could’ve taken him easily.
But he didn’t, instead thrashing a little with eyes wide and he tried to take in the simultaneous facts that sirens were real and that one had just dragged him into the water.
“He’s here to help, drop him,” you snapped, shooting a harsh look at Simon.
“I didn’t even do anything wrong,” he said, a grouchy look crossing his face as he let Finn go, drifting nervously back into the water. You recognized it for what it was. He was preparing for his escape, just in case.
You didn’t blame him for the instinct. To be honest, it was a good one. Blind trust like that in anyone could get him killed.
You hoped this wouldn’t be one of those times. You hoped you’d prove him wrong.
Your hand snapped out to grab Finn’s wrist as he tried to stagger away, eyes wide and frightened.
“Finn,” you said, keeping your voice measured and level. “This is Simon. He’s a friend.”
You didn't think you'd ever seen such panic and betrayal in his eyes, his face normally light and happy. He was breathing heavy, eyes darting between the two of you like he couldn't quite believe he wasn't about to get pulled back in.
Finn looked down at your hand encircling his wrist. He tested his strength against yours, almost pulling away before deciding to let you keep him there. Ever patient, he didn’t take the out, he didn't run. He waited, by your side, nervous but steady.
His breaths slowed, taking stock of Simon in the water.
You weren’t sure who looked more frighted, both sizing one another up, ready to bolt should the need arise.
You left them to it, terrified that any sudden movement would shatter the tentative peace that was forming between them.
He nodded slowly, eyes not moving from Simon, shivering slightly in newly wetted clothes. “And why exactly,” he began, eyes locked onto Simon, “did you want me to meet this friend of yours?”
“Um. So he wants to stop eating people,” you said, wincing as you heard yourself and the reality of what you'd just said sunk in.
“He eats people?” Finn asked, his voice spiking up in panic as his head whipped towards you.
“And he would like to stop. If we can’t help him, what do you think he’s going to start doing again?”
“It’s not my fault!” Simon huffed from the water. “The fish don’t hate you for eating them, why do you get to be mad at me?”
“The fish aren’t people,” Finn insisted, arms wrapping around himself as he shivered in the cold air.
“And you aren’t sirens. I thought you were stupid anyway, like fish.”
“You thought we were like fish?”
Simon shrugged. “Not like fish. But the difference from you to fish is like the difference from you to me. Or… I thought so. We might have been wrong. I don’t know, I just eat.”
He seemed uncomfortable with having to explain himself, shifting in the water as he glanced at you every few seconds.
It took a moment for you to realize what he was looking for. It was approval, you could see him searching for it in your eyes.
You weren’t sure you could give it to him. Your stomach churned at his words but you could feel how earnest he was, could hear the confusion and distress in his voice.
He hadn’t thought he was doing anything wrong. Why would he? He was just doing what sirens had always done and now he wasn’t so sure about it any longer and his whole past was filled with deaths he didn’t know if he could justify anymore.
How would you feel, you wondered, if you met a fish one day and that fish told you it was afraid? If it told you that it told stories to its young about your kind and how they’d snatch it up and cook it over an open flame.
Would it be your fault? Would those deaths be on your conscience?
Would you ever have the presence of mind to see a fish, alone in strange waters, and save it? Could you even do what Simon had done, take that first step?
Your heart hurt for him, alone in his crisis, with no one to talk to about it. His only options were his kind that depended on these horrible deaths to survive and you. And his prey.
Finn pulled you aside, far from out of Simon's earshot but it seemed to settle him a little bit to at least feign privacy.
“What do you want me to do here?” Finn hissed.
“I want to help him. He saved my life and… and even if he didn't, is this not for the best? He wants to do better, we can't just not help him.”
He nodded, hesitant but willing. “Okay, so what now.”
“I don’t know. He can eat fish, we know that for sure. Maybe other food too? Do you think he can eat human food?”
Finn pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes. “I don’t know. How would I know? I guess I can get him fish, we could sneak a couple out and buy some before we leave at night. Would that be enough?”
You shrugged. “I have no idea.”
He sighed. “Great."
“I’m sorry I dragged you into this, I just didn’t know anyone else I could go to.”
He gave you a soft smile. “It’s the least I could do. Now, I’m going to go scrounge something up, you keep your little siren company.”
You shot him one last grateful look before settling down on the beach, water lapping at your shoes.
Simon pulled himself out of the water a bit, trying to get closer to you.
“I’m sorry,” he said, voice barely audible over the sound of the waves.
You took his hand from where it lay, shifting nervously over some rocks, and gave it a gentle squeeze.
“I know.”

Continuing my incredibly sporadic and incredibly all over the place Adventure Time watch, it's really hitting me how Finn and Jake really are at completely different stages in life.
Jake had this whole other life going on before Finn became aware. Dogs in this world mature faster, age faster and don't live as long as humans. Jake went through multiple different phases, phases where he was cruel and reckless and even criminal. I had gotten used to Jake being this calm and wise center of the series that it has been eye opening to see that it was a multiyear long struggle to get to that point. And then Finn began coming into his own and wanted to be a hero and Jake changed again for him.
People have commented on the nature of Finn and Jake's relationship and it really does feel like a sibling pair in which there's a sizable gap between the elder and the younger. Jake does at times take on an almost parental role in guiding Finn. As Finn is growing up and really figuring out who he is, Jake is solidly in doggie middle age. While Finn is roaring with restless, reckless energy and trying to figure out who he is, Jake has mostly settled himself and is now making peace with his past and his future.
Jake's death is made out to be tragic but I bet he passed nice and easily of old age without want or regret. A peaceful death. But I believe the real tragedy was not in how Jake died but the fact that he didn't adequately prepare Finn for it. Jake had been the main pillar over the course of Finn's entire life. He has lost people and suffered a lot as teen/young adult, he couldn't imagine a life without Jake even though Finn would live long after Jake had met his natural end. I wonder if the two of them even realized how incongruous their lifespans were. Surely Simon or even the Islanders could have explained it to them. I wonder if it would have even mattered.
Finn did everything with his entire body and being, including love. He had decided early on that Jake was going to be his partner, best friend, brother forever and maybe nothing Jake or anyone said could have convinced him to move on.
#adventure time#dont mind me im still emo over adventure time#some of the eps I skipped over before have some absolutely fascinating character beats#we really see finn focusing on growing up#and jake focusing on settling into middle age#jake has grown kids for petes sake#they are oth goofy silly adventuring brothers#but they were never destined to go on forever#thats not the tragedy thats just life#the tragedy is that finn could not accept it#ofc who ever really gets over the death of their dog?

my favorite dumb personal headcanon is that finn tidestrider and specifically the elder triton have beef. none of the elders like him very much-- he's one of the most intelligent and widely recognized/respected names in the entire undersea, and he:
isn't religious in any way, shape, or form (alongside the rest of his family)
never married, but had a son later in life, that many people believe was the result of some kind of affair (of course, nothing was ever PROVEN)
had a blatant disregard for not only societal norms, but all the supposed "dangers" life outside of the capital had-- and frequently poked holes in their logic, especially in regards to the oversea
AND finn and his bastard son are the grandfather and father of the fucking chosen one. because of course they are. so yeah. the elders don't like him. but finn and the elder triton, for whatever fucking reason, have BEEF. why? no one knows. they hate finn's autistic swag.
#in my mind the elders and the tidestriders have a very. complicated. relationship.#they were so excited about the chosen one being born#and then they heard the surname “tidestrider” and decided they would hate that child forever#they wouldve waited until gill was older than FIVE to start his training#but they didnt want him picking ANY disobedience up from Some People in his family#jrwi riptide#jrwi headcanon#finn tidestrider#jrwi finn

Oh I forgot how mad I get at like a solid 70% of existing scholarship on gender and medieval Irish lament. Lmao. Rereading an article I read last year and my marginal comments are so grumpy
#i DID write a grumpy and opinionated article about laments it's in Duchas II if you want to read it#it's not a peer-reviewed academic article exactly because it's primarily a report of a conference#but it does have some Opinions and Ideas in it#finn is not doing a phd

i think we need to remember that sexuality and labels mean something different to everyone. what lesbian means for me is different for others. i identify as a lesbian but finn wolfhard is fucking gorgeous and i giggle a bit watching kit connor, and jake johnson being all grumpy as nick miller does something to me. but i also can confidently say that i will never date a man. i absolutely don’t want to. like some men are fucking gorgeous and i can totally appreciate that and still have no interest in dating men and identify as a lesbian. and like, that’s ok. but also for some people maybe they feel like that but identity as bisexual. and that’s totally fine because it’s their fucking decision how they choose to identify. and it’s the same for gender identity. just because someone presents femme or masc doesn’t mean they follow that binary. a trans masc can present feminine. a non-binary person can present however the fuck they want and they’re still fucking non binary. the whole point of the queer community is acceptance and defying labels and being just who we want to be. if you’re trying to push labels as a queer person on another queer person it’s so hypocritical. let people live their lives, whether they choose to label themselves or not and whether their labels make sense or are the same way you think of labels. it’s not about you. it’s about them. let people live.
#wow that was a rant#my coming out was such a process#i came out as bi my junior year#and realized that wasn’t right my senior year and started identifying as queer#and i only just started being comfortable calling myself lesbian this last summer#and even now have just been coming to terms with being allowed to find some men attractive and still being valid as a lesbian#(…this may have started because i saw a gorgeous picture of finn wolfhard and had some feelings about it)#lesbian pride#here and queer#queer pride#pride#lgbtqai#lgbtq#lgbtq community#lgbt pride#lesbian#queer#fuck labels#identity how you fucking want#or don’t at all#just be a mystical being
