Roberto’s Spooky Season Binge 2024:
Halloween (2018)
We interrupt your hourly scroll through tumblr for another entry in RSSB 2024! For this entry I’ll be reviewing/discussing Halloween 2018! Obviously Carpenter’s original 1978 classic is mandatory viewing for any horror fan, and is arguably the best slasher ever made. That being said, Halloween as a franchise has suffered through far too many bad sequels over the years, so back when they announced this direct sequel/reboot (“requel” if you must, ugh), I was understandably skeptical or even down right cynical that it could work. So what did I think after finally watching it today? My spoiler thoughts and review below!
Tumblr media
Okay so straight up, I LOVED this freakin’ movie. There are so many reasons why this movie works not only as a requel but also as a modern slasher. But before I get into all the good juicy parts, I felt like for this one I should go ahead and get my one issue with the movie over with first. Apologies in advance for having to be “that guy”. So yeah, let’s talk about that opening scene. Not gonna lie, it felt pretty gross. The dated and dehumanizing depictions of people with severe mental illnesses stands out here. Now, to be fair, the movie does go out of its way to make it clear to the audience that Michael is simply pure evil (often hilariously I must add, but more on that later) and that trying to look for any deeper meaning behind his murderous ways is a fool's errand. Still, having him be surrounded by other chained up patients, who by all accounts aren’t serial killers, who then go into a state of agitation when scummy journalist guy attempts to provoke Michael, well it got a little too close to exploitative for my tastes. It doesn’t help that the one “mental health professional” in the movie is also your stereotypical quack (who then graduates to straight up murderer) and that the movie even goes out of its way to tell you that the other patients/prisoners who escaped were not only recaptured without issue, they were just wondering around confused. For most, this is likely not a big deal, and I totally understand that. The movie otherwise is sharply written and very self-aware of its status in the horror canon, so one could argue the movie itself is trying to tell the viewer to lighten up and enjoy this absurd horror ride for what it is: A good ol’ fashioned slasher made for the modern age. I’ll let you guys decide how y’all feel about it, but yeah, sorry I just had to bring it up.
Tumblr media
With that unpleasant business out of the way, let’s get into what works! The slasher sub-genre lives and dies on the scariness of the killer, inventive kills, and an interesting and well-written cast of sacrificial lambs, erm, I mean characters that could die at any moment. Check, check, and check! 2018’s Michael may be in his 60’s canonically, but our boy hasn’t lost a step! He’s still the same horrifying and violently effective force of nature we all know. As I mentioned earlier, the movie is very self-aware and sharply written, which often serves to provide the audience with well-executed fan-fare, cheeky call-backs, and surprisingly funny moments. While this movie noticeably lacks the haunting and menacing atmosphere of the original, it manages to carve out its own unique identity and boldly reaffirms its status as horror royalty. It cares not for today’s “elevated horror” trends, and hilariously goes out of its way to poke fun at the fans of that kind of horror. The purposely scummy journalists at the beginning who want to “get inside” of the mind of Michael getting killed immediately was hilarious. Speaking of which, it also comes as no surprise that Dr. Quack was the victim of the movies grisliest kill, a hilarious final “fuck you” to uppity horror fans who insist the slasher genre holds little artistic value and has “nothing to say”.
"Say something." LOL *STOMP*
Tumblr media
Can’t go much further without mentioning Jamie Lee Curtis and her badass performance. As one of the most iconic scream queens, it was so awesome to see her back and this time kick some ass! I was curious to see what direction they would take with her return and I think what they wrote works. Deeply traumatized from the original’s events, Lori has spent her life living in constant paranoia and preparation for the return of her would-be killer. Curtis nails every scene, showing the full nuance of a damaged survivor who tried to prepare her daughter for the worst, but ended up alienating herself from her family. You feel for her when she breaks down during the family dinner scene, but more importantly you believe the conviction in her eyes as the viewer approaches the final act. She’s ready to kill or be killed tonight.
Tumblr media
The rest of the characters are all great in their relative supporting roles. We get plenty of unlikeable but comedic characters that we get to enjoy watching get killed off in cool ways, which is a must for the genre. It’s pretty easy to tell in slasher’s which characters are gonna get the ax, but the movie also keeps you on your toes by killing off genuinely likeable characters too. The pacing is solid and the viewer never goes too long without seeing another body added to the count. The Strode women are obviously the heart of the movie and we get a lot of good scenes with them. I do wish we could have gotten more of Judy Greer’s Karen since I was most curious to see how she would be affected by her mothers trauma, but what we do get is perfect and Greer nails all of her scenes (that “gotcha” scene? Pure badassery). Allyson is also a great addition and I think casting a little-known actress like they did with Curtis back in 78’ was the right move. As we all know now, 2018”s Halloween was the first installment of a new trilogy, so there’s a lot of pressure on a character like Allyson to be well performed and accepted as the heir apparent to Curtis’s scream queen title in the franchise and I think she nails it. Knowing in advance that I was getting into a trilogy, Karen's and Allyson's somewhat lacking character exploration is understandable, thus I was extra curious to see how this movie would decide to end. You can’t launch a successful new trilogy on the back of a weak ending to the first installment after all!
Tumblr media
And what a final act it was! Ahhh so many badass moments to choose from. What I loved most is how expertly the roles are reversed in the end. Laurie has now become the predator, and giving her some of Michaels iconic shots from the original was so cool to watch. The two that stand out are the shot with her coming out of the shadows behind Michael to attack him, and her giving Miachael a taste of his own medicine by disappearing after she falls out the window and he turns away from her body for a second. I was geeking out for most of this and the shot of three generations of Strode women staring down upon their caged prey while everything engulfs in flames was fucking epic. This really becomes a story of women overcoming generational trauma and getting revenge on their tormentors and I’m all here for it! Honestly, I would have liked for the story to have ended there. But two more were made and I must admit I’m nervous about them ruining it after such a great start! Not sure if I’ll get to them for this year's binge, but hopefully they nailed it!
Tumblr media
Final Rating: 9.5
I had a blast watching Halloween 2018 and I think that’s what the creatives were going for! A witty, confident requel of an all-time classic, Halloween 2018 succeeds in every area a slasher should, and more than earns its place among the canon. Curtis is at her best returning as Laurie, and Michael is still as menacing as he was back then. Fun fact, the original Michael Myers actor returned for this, which I think is so fucking cool! While I do wish the story would have ended here, I’m cautiously optimistic for the next two entries. The movie works well as a stand-alone, but make no mistake about it, this was a work of love from hardcore fans, for hardcore fans of the original.

i liked this legacy sequel better when it was called Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), and i liked this movie "about" the effects of Michael's violence on Laurie and the PTSD of the survivors better when it was called Rob Zombie's Halloween II (2009), and i liked this movie "about" the trauma of Jamie Lee Curtis's Laurie specifically surviving Halloween when it was called Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). i never thought they'd make a Halloween movie worse than Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers or even worse than Halloween: Resurrection but this franchise continues to surprise me by somehow getting worse. the best word to describe this movie is slick but empty. reading people's glowing reviews about this movie is driving me a little insane.

Halloween marketing trends I have predicted over my 20 years of Halloween blogging on bogleech.com:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nautical Halloween stuff like spooky octopuses, crabs and mermaids
More attention to carnivorous plants
Plague doctors as a generic Halloween monster character
Mushroom creatures as decorative figurines
Death's Head Moths becoming a major Halloween symbol
ADDITIONALLY!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Folks from the Crazy Bonez brand have confirmed they read my reviews every year and take people's comments on them into consideration. They've now made cephalopods, insects, deep sea fish and a snail after those were popular suggestions. It is quite possible they're not the only industry people taking notes this way :)
AND A VERY SMALL BUT NO LESS DELIGHTFUL ONE, my review of this big plastic cockroach in 2018:
Tumblr media
Now spotted in 2023:
Tumblr media
Should I make this phenomenon the subject of an article? Maybe video???

@neopetsdotcom and I are BACK and we are WATCHING MOVIES!
For our third year in a row, we've made a list of thirteen horror movies each and combined the lists for a 26 day long movie marathon in October. This year we tried to keep the films under 90 minutes (but there are some notable exceptions like Kuroneko and Mandy).
You are welcome to watch along with us! I will be reviewing the films on my letterboxd and I suspect Lauren will as well. I will likely also post mini-reviews/reflections here, like I've done so in the past. You can look at my older film posts under my #movie mondays tag.
You can view the list on letterboxd for the more information on each film & any updates to the order.
EDIT: Mandy was made in 2018 not 2012.
Tuesdays are gentler horror films. Lauren and I watch films on Tuesday nights with our friend who is very easily scared, so we've picked films she can handle.
Wednesdays are 80s films
Thursdays are for the "newest" films on our lists
Fridays are for 70s films
Saturdays are catch-up days, rest days, or days designated for going out.
There are no themes on Sunday/Monday

I'd love to see a full-on review of Burlap from you! As a matter of personal taste, I do like it as a Plushie 2.0, but I also sympathize with your dissatisfaction in the loss of that creepy vibe. Which pets do you like best in it?
Tumblr media
Poor, poor Burlap. It was originally introduced as Burlap Doll alongside Steampunk, Toy, and Origami as part of a 2018 poll to pick a new colour, wherein it came in dead last, probably because it was by far the least cute option of the four. That said, us burlap lovers were annoying vocal enough that TNT eventually caved and released it anyway.
Unfortunately that was a small victory, as there's been a gradual shift in appearance and tone. Burlap's original intent, and the reason so many of us loved it, is that it was creepy. Burlap pets were supposed to be dolls haphazardly stitched together from sack cloth and whatever pieces of junk happened to be lying around, with dead button eyes and stitched-up mouths. It was a very distinct vibe, almost scarecrow-like, and that made it really stand out.
However, TNT has been softening the colour over the years. Bright colors were introduced; the junk and scrap materials concept was almost entirely dropped; straw-like elements were replaced with soft fuzzy tan fur; and so on and so forth. Compare the Burlap Usul, released in 2023, with the Burlap Ogrin, released in 2020:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And just to be clear, the more plushie-like burlap pets are by no means inherently bad; a lot of them are downright adorable or have very pleasing designs. It's just that, for a site that celebrates Halloween each year and has an entire land dedicated to it, there's a strange lack of creepy colours available. There's Halloween, Mutant, Wraith, Ghost, Zombie, Darigan, and... well, that's it. Burlap was not only a welcome addition to this category, but it filled a very specific niche, as there were no other creepy doll colours. We already have plushie as a colour, but we definitely didn't have anything like the original burlap.
Favorite Species:
Tumblr media
Lenny: The original Burlap Doll design put up for voting, the Burlap Lenny is delightfully creepy. The fraying fabric on the wings is a great touch, and I love all the metal bits used here; some springs for the head feathers, random scrap parts for the legs. It's fun, distinct, and has a ton of personality. I also really like the eyes, which are not only black but have red string in the middle, something even the other creepy burlap pets didn't keep.
Tumblr media
Bori: The Burlap Bori has less scrap parts and fewer black accents, but it's still well done overall. There's lots of good details here, like the fraying fabric around the claws, the stitch work and material of the back plates, and the way the tail haphazardly tied together with some loose rope.
Tumblr media
Quiggle: This isn't quite as detailed as the other three burlap pets, but it still brings a lot to the table with its freaky twig fingers and casual rope around its neck. The texturing and warping of the burlap texture is truly well done here and the whole thing has a great sense of dimension. The only thing is that while I like the mismatched eyes in theory, the blue feels a little distracting; I feel like maybe a light brown or tan might've worked better.
Tumblr media
BONUS: Like I said, the plushie-style burlap pets are still very nice looking, and it wouldn't be fair of me to talk about only the creepy pets while not mentioning the non-creepy ones. The Burlap Kau is definitely the best of the crop, with super soft plush fur that reminds me a bit of Highland cows. There's nice detailing in things like the corduroy snout and iridescent eyes, and while there's some colour, it's kept to light earth-tones as to not feel jarring against the browns. Good stuff.
Least Favorite Species:
Tumblr media
Scorchio: Even by new-age burlap standards, the Burlap Scorchio is a trainwreck. The eye-searing teal underbelly is both over-saturated and too low-contrast relative to the brown, creating an eyesore that draws too much attention to a pointless part of the design. There's no real creativity in things like the spikes, and the eyes don't feel like they align to the face properly. The stitched-together wings are a little fun at least, but it's not enough to save this design.

Tarot Decks I Own (as of June 2024)
I got most of these (after the RWS) when I last quit smoking a couple years ago (think I made it five years) as a deal with myself - I could spend my cigarette budget on indie tarot decks. I started up again but it was a good incentive at the time.
I have also traded and given decks away so there are more that I’ve had and lost, but this is my current collection of 27 tarot decks (I’ll make a separate post for oracle and misc decks). I also tried to get these in a way that corresponded to the majors order to help limit my spending but it got pretty neurotic with swapping out deck positions and stuff so I’ve stopped worrying about that as much. It kinda helps me remember my collection though.
I put in parentheses the year I got them in, more or less. I added pictures and I'll update with links to other posts if I ever do deck reviews.

Masterlist of recent PARF videographers
Inspired by a comment on my update of sorts in which the commenter stated that it had never occurred to them to see if anyone had filmed PARF, I present to you a post I have been intending to make literally since starting this blog.
● Michael Ulrich – PARF footage as far back as 2004, hitting stride around 2015, stopping at the end of 2022. Most of the older stuff is scattered in amongst the 2018 footage and again between 2020 and 2021. An excellent source for a one-off example of most in-house shows each year. Quite important for reviewing the Megan-Zach-Mary 'verse. Some of the highest-quality footage. Renaissance Road Trips (formerly known as maddog015) – PARF footage as far back as 2007. More out-of-house stuff than in-house, though they've been expanding to include a little more in-house in recent years. Contains footage from many different Faires, so sifting will be required if you are exclusively interested in PARF. Divides shows up into many pieces, which is handy if you want to reference a specific moment, but cumbersome if you want to just watch a whole show. Footage quality is perfectly reasonable, though not professional-level. Home of THE Halloween Finale of 2017.
● PARF Performers (formerly known as wavking) – PARF footage from 2011 through 2021, excepting 2014 and 2020. Filming is somewhat scattered and not systematic until around 2016. Occasional videos from NJRF and from non-Faire events taking place on PARF grounds. Overall the best source for Finales and an even selection of everything else for 2016-2018, petering off in 2019. Indispensable for reviewing the Megan-Zach-Mary 'verse, though less so the Mary part. Footage quality is perfectly reasonable, though not professional-level.
● Steve Kossor – PARF footage as far back as 2013. Very little in-house stuff; mostly focused on the artists who fall under the heading of “musicians of the shire”, both individually and as a whole. Plenty of stuff from other Faires, too. Most videos are clearly labeled. If you never got to witness the actual Pub Sing from the Before Times, this is where to look, particularly 2019. Very fancy filming, often including multiple cameras at different angles on the same day (goals tbh). Occasional interviews and such. Scattered throughout are videos completely unrelated to Faire, 'cause he's gotta put 'em somewhere.
● MerlinWinchestr – PARF footage as far back as 2013. Hits stride in 2016 (I think), at which point she carefully archives one example of each main-season plotline show, and sometimes Halloween, as well as scattered highlights. Literally the only person besides me to actually bother with non-Halloween plot before 2018, for which I owe her a small portion of my soul. Indispensable for reviewing the Megan-Zach part of the Megan-Zach-Mary 'verse. Nothing from PARF in 2018 or 2019 due to moving to a different state, but filmed stuff from other Faires in the interim. Picked up again in 2020, and expanded the number of shows filmed. Recent videos are carefully labeled. Footage quality is perfectly reasonable, though not professional-level. Scattered throughout are many clips from various unrelated concerts and cons and sometimes reenactment, as well as quite a lot of fandom edits of (predictably) both Merlin and Supernatural.
● Joseph Germano – PARF footage as far back as 2015. Almost entirely in-house; largely storyline, combat, improv. Initially filmed things exclusively for himself and his family, not listing the videos publicly for years. As such, the quality of camerawork can occasionally leave something to be desired (though much less, in my opinion, than he claims), hence his playlist called “MeadVision”. Filled the void left by PARF Performers's petering off, and is owed a small portion of my soul for archiving so much Disasterpiece in 2019. Footage quality is perfectly reasonable, though not professional-level. Chronology is a mere suggestion until 2021.
● PARF fan – If you're interested in 2017 plotline and combat, I've got everything I filmed up on the YouTube except for Halloween Joust and Halloween Finale. I've also got loads of raw footage of in-house stuff from the first half the 2020 season over on the Facebook. Effort is made with cinematography, though it sometimes backfires. Videos are carefully labeled, but only in the titles, not the thumbnails. Footage quality is perfectly tolerable, though far from professional-level, and the sound is sometimes bad (didn't have a fancy camera until the 2022 season). Indispensable for reviewing 2017, frankly.
● PA Renaissance Faire – PARF footage from 2018 only. One each Court, Melee, Bloody Best, some of the main-season individual Chess fights, Halloween Court, Halloween Chess, and a whole bunch of in-house songs from sundry Finales, many of which were not archived in any other form elsewhere (that I know of).
● Ren Faire with Rose – PARF footage as far back as 2018. Nigh-on exclusively in-house. Mostly highlights rather than entire shows. Features occasional streetwork, particularly from 2019, which is beyond value. Mostly chronological, but 2022 and 2023 and 2024 are intermittently jumbled. Tbh, I haven't gotten around to watching enough of their footage to comment on the quality of camera or camerawork.
● Dan Gualtieri – The newest member of this “team” (none of us actually coordinate or otherwise work together, though we should). Videos from 2022, 2023, and 2024. Mixture of highlights and full shows. Has already filled several gaps. I haven't actually watched any of his videos yet, so I cannot provide comment on camera or camerawork.

This internet troll experience of mine is one that is infamous terrible, you see this dates all the way back to when I had old Deviantart account and I went under the name Drmusic2–1 (or Drmusic2 as some trolls missppelled it as) and there was this one particular troll that just seemed a little too creepy for words, and how? I’ll tell you, he was morbidly obsessed with me.
Firstly he dedicated several forum threads to me even if there were already two of them prior to his arrival but one particular thread went on for far too long, like 206 pages long. If the admin hadn’t been an asshole then maybe, just maybe it would have just ended at one. But as it stands, rude admin screwed me over and bam…206 pages. Good lord, 10 or 30 pages was bad enough but 200 is overkill and if said thread wasn’t already dead it was slowly dying from the inside.
Weening, oh god…the countless weening from other people on this particular forum. Even from people who only one had experience with them and the only reason they thought so negatively of me was because their precious site told me i’m a lulcow and that i’m a freak who believes they are their own character. Yes, I had a character based on a dead comedian and I RPed as that character a lot prior to this but the thing is I realize know that I got carried away, and that my character isn’t real…they didn’t. They think that I thought it was real. One blog even made this whole stupid post about how I’m apparently some kind of serial killer who wants to wear the skin of said comedian. One problem with that, said comedian is DEAD. John Candy died in 1994, I only started discovering his movie back in the late 2000’s. Also that one post I did was a cosplay post, I was looking for help on my John Candy cosplay project. And yes I did cosplay as him once for halloween, but I do not actually think I am him or a character based on him.
Despite obviously being familiar with the concept of furries and fursonas, these weening loser types of his pretty much thought I was being serious. And also i’ll never forgive one of them for what they said about werecreatures and furries, they’re not the same thing at all.
This guy’s numerous creepy fetishes…well for one thing he just seemed to really love torture and gore although consider several of the other members mentioned themselves thinking that I was into ‘diapers’ and vore…which i’m not, even going so far as to make up a fetish called ‘soul vore’…uhhhh….I don’t even know if that’s even a thing. This guy wouldn’t stop going on and on about how he’d like to torture me, yep…he was into the whole sadism thing too.
All of his avatars were women despite he himself clearly being male, he loved pretending to be a woman for some reason and some people actually do think he was one. The only photos that he used that weren’t female were one that was a mugshot and the other was a photo of some guy drinking some kind of alcoholic beverages, he used as this as a means to coax information out of me and my friends. And no he wasn’t trans this was way before transgender became mainstream.
He targeted my friends and family. He acted like my family hated me, my late father definitelyl loved me (he passed away in 2018 by the way), and he acted like I was a bane to them and acted like my friends weren’t real. Online friends may not be the same as physical friends but they still count as friends.
Videos…specifically an awful Xtranormal video of apparently my Author Avatar (who apparently is a little girl or teenager) being sent to a group home by someone posing as a social worker. Yeah I did Xtranormal videos too, but I only published two of them. I have two Vyond videos but I had to delete one of them because well let’s just say someone didn’t like a two star review I did of a game I didn’t like.
The whole nearly hacking my accounts to pieces thing, he and two other members were part of this whole conspiracy to try and humiliate me by coaxing me into giving personal online information to them - and I was talked into having a Skype conversation with one of them. And he…eeeew, showed me what was supposedly his penis, but it wasn’t even the penis - it was the penis of some underaged male user that said underage user had posted five years ago…yes, apparently the user in question did that on purpose, it’s made even worse when in one huge post the user that used those admitted to stealing pictures from a porn site which he passed off as his own nudes. Oh and he really thought he could get me with the system32 thing…since when as that ever worked at all?
Digging up old blog entries of mine and my photobucket pages. Those blog entries of mine were experiment and in character and prior to the current blog I had, those were just a way to amuse myself and I have since lost the information for those ones. As for my photobucket page, that’s just where I post my movie screencaps and magazine clippings that I find, nothing wrong with it at all. Keep in mind that one of the earlier blogs of mine was deleted because of hackers and I couldn’t get back into the other ones because I didn’t have the login information anymore.
Bringing in people that just didn’t have any reason for hating on me except for trying to be weening types. They’d do anything that site tells them even if it mean killing themselves in the process.
The doll fetish porno page. Basically he took a photo of a toy I have and another one and made a bizarre yuri porno photoshoot out of it, two female dolls making out with each-other. Oh and what makes that even creepier is that said dolls are basically dolls of young girls, so it’s underage too. Yeah, there was another user who loved making erotic doll photography to the point of giving a doll of a male character breasts, so this guy decided to copy that and use two dolls made to look like young girls make out with each-other. Underrage yuri, yikes.
They act like I really liked being treated like this, I didn’t…I had already become so unimpressed with how they were trolling me because of all their routines were the same. Yeah I created a werecreature oc based on John Candy and I create werecreature OCs in general but that doesn’t mean I think they’re real or believe I am them. They just liked to think that I do just because it would make them seem sane by comparison, and they like to live in their little fantasy world where their beloved John Candy monster is real and where they can talk about me all they like, well…they can try and say my name all they want but I stopped calling them back ages ago. This number is no longer in service.
Let’s talk about this guy openly admitting along with a few others that he wanted to see me suffer, oh and he wanted me to get killed off or go insane as well. Yes, I know lying about my masturbation habit to another user was a bad move but hey I had to do something to get him to shut up. Besides, I don’t even masturbate at all…not even in private. Are you sure that this guy isn’t the one who should have been sent to a group home and not me?

The Murder of Martha Moxley
Tumblr media
October 01, 2023
On October 30, 1975, 15 year old Martha Moxley went out with her friends to "mischief night" which was a night where all the neighbourhood kids would pull pranks on the neighbours, such as ding dong ditch and TP'ing houses.
According to the other kids there that night, Martha had been flirting with a boy named Thomas Skakel and even kissed him. Thomas had an older brother named Michael. Their mother had died in 1973 from brain cancer and that was when Michael turned to drinking. It was said that the Skakel's would be given large sums of money and would be left unsupervised a lot.
The last time anyone saw Martha she was apparently with Thomas behind a fence, near the boy's pool in his backyard. This was at 9:30pm.
The following day, October 31, 1975, Halloween, Martha's body was found underneath a tree in her own backyard. Her pants and underwear were pulled down, though it was later determined she had not been sexually assaulted.
Pieces of a broken six-iron golf club were found near her. The autopsy indicated that she had been bludgeoned and stabbed with the club. The club was owned by the Skakel's.
Since Thomas Skakel was the last person to have been with Martha the night before he became the prime suspect. His father however, denied authorities to get any access to Thomas' school and mental health records.
Thomas' live in tutor, Kenneth Littleton also became a prime suspect. He had only started working a few hours before the murder. Neither Thomas or Kenneth were charged and the case was cold for decades.
Over the years both Thomas and his brother Michael changed their alibi's for the night Martha was murdered. Michael claimed he was window-peeping and masturbating in a tree beside Martha's home from 11:30 pm to 12:30 am.
Two former students who had gone to a centre for troubled youths reported they had heard Michael confess to killing Martha with a golf club. One of these students quoted Michael as having said, "I'm gong to get away with murder. I'm a Kennedy." Michael's aunt was the widow of US Senator, Robert F. Kennedy. Michael supposedly had gotten special treatment at this centre.
A man named William Kennedy Smith was tried and acquitted for rape in 1991, and a rumour had begun that he had been at the Skakel house on the night Martha was killed. Though it was never confirmed if he had involvement, the case had a new investigation to go off of.
In June 1998, a one-man grand jury was set to review the evidence of the case. After 18 months, it was determined there was enough evidence to charge Michael Skakel with murder.
On January 9, 2000, Michael surrendered to authorities. He was released shortly after on a $500,000 bail. On March 14, 2000, Michael was arraigned for murder n juvenile court, because he was only 15 years old at the time of Martha's murder.
On January 31, 2001, a judged ruled he would be tried as an adult.
The trial began on May 7, 2002, in Connecticut. Michael's alibi at the time of the murder was that he was at his cousin's house. On June 7, 2002, Michael was found guilty of the murder of Martha Moxley. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
Skakel and his team fought for a new trial many times, often being denied. However, on October 23, 2013, Skakel was granted a new trial by Judge Thomas A. Bishop who ruled his attorney had failed to adequately represent Michael when he was convicted in 2002.
On November 21, 2013, Skakel was released on a $1.2 million bond and conditions. He had to be monitored with a GPS device and have no contact with the Moxley family. He would not be allowed to leave the state of Connecticut and would be periodically checked in on over the phone.
In December 2016, the Connecticut Supreme Court reinstated Skakel's murder conviction with a 4-3 majority decision. In 2018, they wanted the court to revoke Skakel's bail, and make him continue to serve his sentence in jail. Also in 2018 it was announced there would be a new trial ordered, but by October 2020, it was informed that Skakel would not be retried, with the state's chief saying the state would not be able to prove anything beyond a reasonable doubt.
Michael Skakel remains released.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will officially be swinging its way to Netflix in the U.S. on October 31, 2023.
Netflix shared the news on Twitter/X, saying, "His name is Miles Morales. He was bitten by a radioactive spider. I'm pretty sure you know the rest. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse comes to Netflix in the U.S. on October 31!!!"
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the sequel to 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and it earned $690 million during its worldwide box office run that began on June 2, 2023.
In our Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse review, we said it "surges with visual inventiveness and vibrance in an undeniably strong evolution of the style established in Into the Spider-Verse.
"Miles and Gwen’s search for their place in the multiverse is relentless and exciting, almost to a fault, and though the plot is often an afterthought to the pure chaos of creation on display, strong performances and character arcs that feel true to the heroes we met last time help ensure that Across the Spider-Verse is a more-than-worthy follow-up to an all-time classic."
This Halloween surprise is just another reason why this October is one of the best for Spidey fans as we are only a few days away from Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5.
If you want another way to celebrate Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, you can check out all the details on the 25% discounted collector's edition of the movie that is set to be released on November 14, 2023.
For more, check out why Miles is one of the best Latino superheroes we honored during Hispanic Heritage Month, how the digital release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse makes one version of the film canon, and how you can also watch the movie if you are a subscriber to PlayStation Plus Premium or Deluxe.

hi can i ask to hear you rant about the 2018 mary shelley maybe
thanks for the ask! this is an unhinged stream of thought & super long of course. will reblog with part 2.
where do i even begin??? 1) its disappointing that the filmmaker is a highly accomplished feminist & role model but then she sells a fake biopic about a historical woman which is twisted to fit a false narrative that mary shelley herself would disagree with. so disappointing! 2) percy shelley wasnt an alcoholic he literally wrote against alcohol consumption in his work on vegetarianism 3) mary literally never even met harriet and if she had the chance she wouldn’t have because she hated her 4) shelley and harriet both saw other people; harriets 3rd child was percy’s; also i dont even remember if harriets suicide is mentioned? why bring her in to demonize percy if not utilizing the main reason why ppl demonize him in the first place? 5) mary didnt like polidori - he literally threatened her partner to a duel & polidori is insulted in the preface to frankenstein - but the film portrays them as good friends omg what 6) all the characters are one-dimensional 7) no offense to byron’s actor who did good with what he was given but the character was written to be like a parody of byron. like a halloween costume gone too far. one review described it as cartoonish & i agree 8) claire is unrecognizable; irl she was firey and bold and funny and she literally asked byron out multiple times before seducing him then followed him across the continent & she’s literally the one who introduced him to mary first then percy!!! percy/byron didn’t know each other prior! all of this is left out!!! 8) hogg is so demonized & rapey; that scene was so uncomfortable and inaccurate; irl he was calm & funny & mary literally was going to have sex with him but didnt bc pregnancy etc. - she wrote all this in her loving letters to him which dont fit the filmmakers agenda; hogg was one of shelley’s best friends etc. 9) most importantly, percy actively encouraged and helped mary with frankenstein & helped edit/publish it and literally wrote part of it & she said she couldn’t do it without him. but in the film they don’t show any of this. 10) shelley was never given credit for frankenstein 11) the actors are nothing like how i would imagine these people but they all did their jobs well and had good chemistry and its so disappointing they werent given a proper script or guidance etc 12) the film was boring as shit, i watched it before i knew anything about the romantics personal lives (so i wasnt even critical when i watched it) & i only got thru the first 20 mins or so then continued i think weeks later vowing to finish it & when i did i was pissed at wasting my time, esp the scene with mary/claire crying ugh it was so painful to watch and not in a good way 13) i was actually relieved when i found out the film was inaccurate & that these events werent as boring as they were presented. like i knew the film had to be wrong & dismissed it before i even started learning about the romantics. like these are some of the most fascinating people in history how do you make them that boring & one-dimensional & insufferable 14) the figures themselves would all hate the movie 15) why is it called “mary shelley” when it should be called “mary and percy” or “the making of frankenstein” bc thats all the film really focuses on tbh! she lived decades after frankenstein and wrote other stuff too. but i dont think the director or the writer knew any of that 16) byron was the only entertaining part ngl (tbh whether demonizing or glorifying him it would be impossible to make byron boring; hugh grants version almost was except he’s hugh grant) 17) no grave sex? cowards. most historians agree mary and percy had sex for the first time on her mother’s grave. 18) shelley/claire were best friends, most historians believe they had an affair, & mary and claire had a lot of arguments until mary kicked her out (they loved each other but didnt like living together). none of this is shown! instead mary/claire are girlbossing against evil man percy. if they wanted to demonize him so bad why didnt they use the claire affair.

So yeah... That totally unnecessary Nelson Peltz proxy fight saga of current-day Disney is finally over.
Thank goodness. Peltz seemed like he was acting on behalf of former Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, another guy who is bad news bears to say the least. Peltz just looked like another old man who plays to the crowd that loves to call everything "woke". While it doesn't take rocket science to figure out that The Walt Disney Company is having some trouble across various divisions, their solution wasn't even a solution. Nothing remotely near that.
Interestingly, Disney finally released their first *new* theatrical movie this year, a $30m prequel to THE OMEN that got solid reviews but struggled on opening weekend for whatever reason. It's looking to perform more like last year's new EXORCIST movie than 2018 HALLOWEEN (both films directed by David Gordon Green), I guess not all horror legacy sequels (lega-sequels) are destined to make coin. No matter, $30m isn't steep, it should make it back eventually if not in theaters. It's a 20th Century Studios movie, so it's no big deal really.
Weirdly, POOR THINGS is one of their few box office successes released over the past 12 or so months, outside of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 and - by a hair - ELEMENTAL. 20th kinda came to the rescue there, too: A HAUNTING IN VENICE doubled its budget, THE BOOGEYMAN did pretty good.
All I know is, Disney's probably never going to relive 2019 again... And I feel like they keep trying to make that year happen again... But it won't, because that was a case of the planets freakin' aligning...
I extend that to the 2010s in general, honestly, but I'll focus on 2019...
That year saw the billion-dollar releases of - in order: CAPTAIN MARVEL, AVENGERS: ENDGAME, ALADDIN, TOY STORY 4, THE LION KING, FROZEN II, and THE RISE OF SKYWALKER... They got a moderate success out of the MALEFICENT sequel that year, too, while the live-action DUMBO didn't recoup its - ironically - massive budget. (The original 1941 DUMBO was a low-budget picture belted out during the war.) Some 20th titles came out that year, too, most of them not doing great, like the X-Men movie DARK PHOENIX and Blue Sky's penultimate SPIES IN DISGUISE (I call it penultimate because I consider NIMONA a partial Blue Sky movie, their swan song).
Even then, that was a year to die for. But that's the rub... ENDGAME was the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's whole Infinity Saga. 11 years in the making, it's astounding it was able to have juice for that long! Yes, yes, I know, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME was the *actual* end of Phase 3... That functions more like an epilogue, while ENDGAME was the big finale event everyone waited for... and of course, CAPTAIN MARVEL benefited greatly from being the movie that preceded ENDGAME. By less than two months... TOY STORY 4 was locked to be big, because TOY STORY 3 made a billion nine years earlier. ALADDIN and THE LION KING were remakes of some of Disney's biggest animated movies, and FROZEN II was a sequel to another one of Disney's biggest animated movies. RISE OF SKYWALKER ended the entire Skywalker Saga... And ending the main story of one of the biggest franchises- You get the idea!
Suffice to say, Disney's not going to have that year again. They'd have to acquire like another 2-3 franchises, and release their finales all during the same year in addition to two other favorites. The MCU isn't the must-see event with each and every film anymore post-ENDGAME, Star Wars' future is probably in serialized shows still, the remake well has run dry and all the biggest Disney animated movies were pretty much covered (SNOW WHITE - from the one that started everything - is on its way, but I see that performing more similarly to DUMBO and not LITTLE MERMAID), and... Well, animated movies that aren't sequels are more of a gamble nowadays.
But it seems like in 2025 and 2026, Disney's looking to keep trying this usual platter of movies that would've been a killer line-up in 2017. Not today. That's how I felt about their offering last year, too.
It's a lot of reliance on the brands. New Star Wars sounds like box office gold, right? Well, two new Star Wars movies in 2026 after all those movies Disney did from 2015-2019 in addition to what seems like a ton of Disney+ shows... And Grogu was super-popular back when he first appeared in THE MANDALORIAN back in 2019... Yeah, like, who knows how those will do... In addition to all the Marvel movies planned, not all of them are gonna get everyone packing the auditoriums - as we saw with QUANTUMANIA and THE MARVELS. (And on the Warner Bros./DC end, SHAZAM! 2 and BLUE BEETLE, even AQUAMAN 2 didn't make half of what the first one made, THE FLASH fell sharply after its opening.)
And then you have the animated sequels, which seem like safe bets. Disney only missed with Pixar's LIGHTYEAR, which was a spin-off that went a totally different direction that seemed to have alienated the audiences that made all the TOY STORY movies the big hits that they were. TOY STORY 5 likely does way better than that, but I expect it to be a box office come down from the last two. It would have to have a real banger story, I feel, to get people to keep coming. I think MOANA 2, ZOOTOPIA 2, and FROZEN III - all from Disney Animation - are locked to at least open big. If they're very unsatisfactory movies to the public - like STRANGE WORLD and WISH were, then they have weak legs... And smackdab between this sequel-frenzy is one original Pixar movie: Space adventure ELIO.... Which got delayed, supposedly because it was a big mess and it needed another year and a half to be reconfigured. Not that that really means anything, but it's sure to balloon its probably already-big budget. ELEMENTAL had to climb and climb to somewhat eke out a profit, ELIO might have even more trouble as an original movie. It's also not known what Pixar's other 2026 movie is opposite TOY STORY 5, though I suspect it is another original, which will make it stick out as well. WDAS' original movies seem missing in action at the moment.
20th Century Studios and Searchlight continue to have the interesting stuff, which I think will last longer than more Marvel and Star Wars movies. Both studios really did become a replacement for Disney's former adult movie label Touchstone, didn't they? And they too have their franchise biggies, more for Disney, with the likes of PLANET OF THE APES and ALIEN... Whose new installments come out this year and are sure to do okay. Plus, more AVATAR... And yet those franchise don't feel - to me - as overdone as Star Wars and the MCU. It's been 7 years since the last APES and ALIEN movies, weirdly enough (WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES and ALIEN: COVENANT), and AVATAR took a long break before returning with a cluster sequels all reasonably spaced out from one another. PREDATOR/PREY looks to keep going. I also wonder if future KINGSMAN movies are still in play.
Again, it's the little stuff that matters, because wells always run dry... And I think that's Disney's problem at the moment, ditto them playing things way too safe in other areas... I've said that before, but they - specifically on the "Walt Disney Pictures" end - need to just let loose and let a filmmaker just make something dynamic and cool and new. Something that takes the audience completely by surprise, not just another "Disney movie". Something like PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN or WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT. And make more smaller movies, too, and not relegate them to streaming. Little movies like THE PRINCESS DIARIES, HOLES, etc. We're in that scene in RATATOUILLE again where the patrons of Gusteau's ask if there's anything *new* on the menu...
The time is now, Disney. With a new head of your live-action division, let's see what you've got. We're past calendar years locked and loaded with 8 tentpole movies...
