vegas golden knights, washington capitals, new york islanders, florida panthers, ottawa senators (for dog days of summer), toronto maple leafs, winnipeg jets !!!
Thank you!! So many questions wow! (They're from this list)
Vegas Golden Knights: What trope(s) is/are your guilty pleasure?
All and none of them. Inside the fandom I don't feel guilty about anything but I'm not willing to talk about reading fanfic with my IRL contacts.
Washington Capitals: What were some of the first fics you read in the fandom?
Hockey rpf? One of these three:  Score More Goals by insomniacjams, Start Real Slow by coricomile and twisting the kaleidoscope by thermocline must have been the very first one. They are all from late 2016/early 2017, that’s when I started reading.
New York Islanders: What fic(s) live(s) rent-free in your head?
Anything I've ever read by bauer, no matter if I've finished the fic or not. J! (jump (caution!)) by mimimini. And many more!
Florida Panthers: What’s your favorite behind the scenes idea that never actually made it into a fic?
In a birthday party scene in money shot, I was going to write something along the lines of "Kimmo serves good quality champagne, he is never cheap with his wines like Jampe (Jarmo Kekäläinen)" but I had to leave it out because I didn't name Kimmo's friends in the scene. I thought it would have been a fun line to use because Jarmo being cheap with his wine choices is a thing that Kimmo Timonen has told on his Kimanttia podcast.
Ottawa Senators: What is your favorite line from [insert fic]?
In Dog Days of Summer, it's this:
"You said you wanted space to figure out where we are headed,” he says, voice cold and stiff. “This is it, this is the space! Don't complain when you get what you asked for."
Toronto Maple Leafs: Which fic is your most self-indulgent?
Answered here, but I might add that the whole series it's a part of (King and Prince of Carolina) is nothing but self-indulgence.
Winnipeg Jets: How many wips do you have? (This includes everything from vague ideas to half-written fics.)
4, one is a vague idea but the other three have something written in. I've forgotten all about any other wips.
--
Thank you and have a great day!

Imagine: Being a princess and Kylo Ren saving you from danger
Tumblr media
The snow storms on the planet, ruled by snow and ice Elysia were a destructive force. Only one of the effects the cold sun, the celestial body orbited around, had. The planet may have rulers but the real king of the realm was the ice. Stepping foot outside a settlement would lead to unquestionable demise from the biting frost, impenetrable mist and suffocating blizzard, beating the snowflakes in the unfortunate traveler's body and latching onto every bit of his being until they turn into nothing but a warning for future adventurers who dared venture outside the safety of the settlement. Icy winds froze lungs, tall dunes of snow made the landscape impassable by foot and bloodthirsty beasts lurked in the mist, starving, ready to attack any warm blooded creature they catch the scent of.
You learned that the hard way after your spacecraft crashed into a mountain, not far from the capital, where you were to be crowned queen in a week. Your mother had recently passed and by law, you were next in line to rule over Elysia, making your father king regent. Sadly, the pilot lost control over the vehicle, making it crash and left you the only survivor out of himself and the two bodyguards you had.
Contrary to what an outsider would think, you loved Elysia. It was your home and even through the veil of blizzards, you didn't mind living there, in the safety and warmth of a city, of course. But now that you were stranded, alone and freezing, you utterly despised it, wishing you were on the hottest planet in the universe instead even if it meant your skin melting off. You decided the first thing you were going to do was try to find shelter before contacting your father, but even this plan of yours was foiled. Soon you heard a deep rumble, which chilled you to the very bones, colder and deeper than the blizzard. You turned around slowly, only to be met by the silhouette of a four-legged creature, as tall as you, prowling closer and closer to you. It had long, grey patches of fur, scattered densely all over it's body, a short bob tail, paws big enough to rip you apart with one swipe, a fuzzy head with small ears, a short snout with long, sharp fangs, too big to fit in its mouth so they hung outside menacingly. It's eyes were big, red orbs, narrowed, bloodthirsty, showing you without words that intended you to be its long awaited dinner. It was too big for you to fight off so you thought the next best thing was to back away slowly, before breaking into a sprint. You knew you couldn't outrun this creature, trained to survive in this environment and too hungry to leave you alone, but you sure weren't going to surrender yet.
The snowflakes were beating the skin of your face, freezing your tears as they fell. The deep snow made it impossible to run and when the beast saw you panic it pounced, missing you only by centimeters. Roaring, it made a big jump, landing behind you and swung its front paw, ripping your coat and flesh on your back.
Screaming, you fell to the ground, sinking in the veil of deep, fluffy snow and the monster started circling around you, as if playing around before making a leathal blow. The ultimate killing machine, made for survival in this hostile environment. You must have crashed in its territory and stirred it awake. You backed away hurriedly, adrenaline pumping through your body, dulling the pain from your wound. It swung again at you, sending you flying farther away and crashing into a snow coated rock. You briefly felt the air leave your lungs and your vision going blurry.
A flash of red crossed your vision and the face of the creature. Next thing you knew, the severed head of the animal fell in front of you in a clean cut, body not far behind, frozen in a jump. A man dressed in black came up to you, crouching behind, red lightsaber still unsheathed. He wore a strange helmet and his voice sounded mechanical when he spoke to you.
"Are you alright?" You took a moment to answer, staring up at him in disbelief. Nodding, you sat up slowly. "Thank you." You answered quietly. A wave of wind blew your way, making you both cringe and covering yourselves from the cold. "It's not safe here. We must get out of this weather before you freeze to death." He picked you up bridal style and slowly made his way for a spacecraft, parked not far. You felt relief, not only because you were saved from the creature, but also because the heat of the strong exhausts of the jet brought warmth back to you.
He brought you inside and sat you down on a comfortable velvety chair, immediately removing his cape and wrapping it around your shoulders. You curled up into a ball, pulling the cape closer around yourself. It felt nice, saturated in his scent. You smiled up at him "Thank you again." His reply surprised you. "Do not thank me, princess" How did he know who you were? He wasn't a local and it was too soon for your father to send a rescue party after you. "How do you know who I am? Did my father send you to find me?" He shook his head. "I'm not a savior. On the contrary even. I saved you because I need you alive. And you are coming with me for questioning and randsom." You could hear the smirk in his voice. Your heart sunk. So you were out of the frying pan and into the fire. "Excuse me?" You raised your voice, standing up straight in his face "Who do you think you are?" The sizzle of a lightsaber made you rethink your actions. "The man who can kill you in a heartbeat." He answered sternly.
"You need me alive." You challenged. "That doesn't mean anything to me." Narrowing your eyes with a growl, you decided to sit back down obediently. "I am not a knight in shining armor, princess."

my season predictions: RECAP
italicized = season prediction
bold = what actually happened
-
the metropolitan division.
the flyers will shock most people, pulling a surprisingly decent cup run, possibly making eastern conference finals or the stanley cup final. if they go to the cup final, they will win. since the cup final hasn’t happened yet, we don’t know if the flyers won obviously! but they definitely shocked a LOT of people this season (including myself.) and i’m really confident in my boys and that they’ll go far in the playoffs.
there will be a huge trade within the division that causes an uproar i mean, taylor hall?
kaapo kakko will have more goals than jack hughes - but jack hughes will have more points overall yeah. this didn’t happen but i thought it did. kakko had 10-13-23, meanwhile hughes had 7-14-21. (format goals-assists-total points)
jack hughes will win the calder. lol wishful thinking! still between q. hughes and makar, will definitely end up being makar.
a team expected to be extremely good this year will do the complete opposite and tank. (possibly team that makes big trade?) say it with me: THE NEW JERSEY DEVILS!
columbus will fall to the bottom of the ranks after suffering the loss of duchene and bobrovsky. john tortorello? not happy. columbus didn’t fall to the bottom of the ranks, but they were in the bottom half of the division.
the flyers new young core will start to make an early impact. one of the defensemen will suffer a long-term injury, allowing one of the phantoms to come up and make an instant impact shocking fans. sam morin suffered an injury riiiight after coming back from a torn acl, and tore it again! he wasn’t up with the flyers, he was still in the minors, but he was on the official roster at the start of the season.
joel farabee will make the flyers lineup and be in the calder cup running. (bold. i know.) wishful thinking, again.
sidney crosby will suffer an injury, but it will not be expressed until after the season is over. tba
ovechkin will retire the end of this season or the next. tba
the new york rangers will suffer from the loss of kevin hayes and mats zuccarello – kakko will not be able to fulfill their space. yup! hayes and zucc both thrived on their new teams and the rangers were at a .564 point percentage
standings predictions. (bold prediction is where that team placed and their points)
1st: washington capitals - 94 points 1st - 90 points
2nd: philadelphia flyers - 89 points 2nd - 89 points (spot freaking on)
3rd: pittsburgh penguins - 88 points 3rd - 86 points
4th: new jersey devils - 86 points 8th - 68 points
5th: carolina hurricanes - 81 points 4th - 81 points
6th: new york islanders - 79 points 5th - 80 points
7th: new york rangers - 75 points 7th - 79 points
8th: columbus blue jackets - 72 points 6th - 81 points
the atlantic division.
the florida panthers? yeah, they’re gonna explode. with bobby luo out of there and bob in, they’re gonna be a serious threat. however, bob might suffer a few injuries here and there. i mean, yeah. this happened. but i don’t recall bob having any injuries!
spencer knight will sign his elc at the end of his first year at boston college, starting next season and so forth in the minor league. wishful thinking
this will be a tough division this year! usually the metro is the really close division, the one that you never really know whos playoff bound until the end, but the atlantic might be giving the metro a run for their money. nope! not one bit!
THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS WILL MAKE IT OUT OF THE SECOND ROUND. there, i said it. tba!
the leafs will finally break the curse - however, they do not play boston in the first round and will lose to the b’s in the second round. tba... we shall see.
boston will go onto the eastern conference finals but will lose to the philadelphia flyers in game 7. tba... obviously i didnt predict a pandemic happening
tampa bay will be a powerhouse like they were the previous regular season, but once again will fail to show up in the playoffs. they will not be swept. powerhouse indeed... but not best in their division.
ottawa will have a (slight!) comeback season! they will not be amazing, but they will not be as awful as they have been. i think i just felt bad and said this. this did not happen.
buffalo will have a MUCH better season this year. ummmm kinda?
montreal will have an above mediocre season. carey price will sustain another injury, leaving montreal to rely on one of their prospects. pretty much mediocre. i think i remember price being injured.
cole caufield will sign with the canadiens the end of this season, or will sign if wisconsin loses early in the playoffs and the canadiens make it. wishful thinking... caufield to wisconsin for one more year.
detroit will fall to the bottom of the standings. yes. very much so. #getlarkinout
john tavares will have the c in toronto. auston matthews will have an a. toronto will be set on fire. not literally lmao yup! this happened and i’m proud of it:)
standings predictions. (i am VERY proud of this)
1st: tampa bay lightning - 115 points 2nd - 92 points
2nd: boston bruins - 108 points 1st - 100 points
3rd: toronto maple leafs - 103 points 3rd - 81 points
4th: florida panthers - 99 points 4th - 78 points
5th: montreal canadiens - 94 points 5th - 71 points
6th: buffalo sabres - 89 points 6th - 68 points
7th: ottawa senators - 86 points 7th - 62 points
8th: detriot red wings - 79 points 8th - 39 points
the pacific division:
honestly the pacific is really iffy for me. i dont really like any of these teams besides the flames and the ‘nucks. this is a really mediocre division overall.  yes, they were mediocre.
matthew tkachuk will sign with the calgary flames. will suffer an injury early on in the season. he did sign, but no injury for tkachuky early in the season. it was in december.
edmonton will be mediocre. #getmcdavidoutofedmonton connor and leon will carry the team once more, the team will start off weak but make their way up in the standings as the season progresses. by the time they make their way up the ranks it will be too late. nope! edmonton shocked us ALL this year, and even before the pandemic they were on track to make the post season.
phil kessel will have almost no impact on the arizona coyotes whatsoever. he will have a horrible season without crosby. yeeaaahhh. kessel had 14-24-38 this season, but last season while playing in pittsburgh he had 27-55-82.
the vancouver canucks will be significantly better, however, quinn hughes will sustain an injury midway through the season, causing the canucks to suffer. the canucks were actually doing really well! quinn hughes did sustain an injury, but at the beginning of march.
los angeles will still suffer to rebuild their franchise. jonathan quick will be injury plagued. with the signing of turcotte, who really knows however quick did not sustain any injuries this season.
anaheim will be a little bit better than they have been! not amazing, but not bottom of the league rankings. i’m saying they could end up being from 22nd - 18th ish nope! anaheim finished 27th.
viva las vegas! vegas will have a bit of a comeback season similar to their inaugural season. yup!
san jose will fall in the rankings ever so slightly. they will make a decent trade at some point in the season. san jose fell HARD in the standings.
standings predictions.
1st: calgary flames - 103 points 4th - 79 points
2nd: vegas golden knights - 99 points 1st - 86 points
3rd: vancouver canucks - 92 points 3rd - 78 points
4th: san jose sharks - 89 points 8th - 63 points
5th: edmonton oilers - 80 points 2nd - 83 points
6th: anaheim ducks - 73 points 6th - 67 points
7th: los angeles kings - 70 points 7th - 64 points
8th: arizona coyotes - 68 points 5th - 74 points
the central division.
dylan strome and alex debrincat will light the league up again once more - but this time, even more so than last season. they are the toews and kane 2.0 and will certainly be able to hold the fort down in chicago when the two retire. dylan strome had 12-26-38 and alex debrincat had 18-27-45. not awful.
dylan strome will have a 65+ point season. keep in mind strome was traded a few months into the season, imagine what his stats would look like if he had been with chicago the entire season? wishful thinking. but if we had played a full season i believe he would’ve at least made 50.
patrik laine will be traded from the winnipeg jets, but the jets will pull a new york islanders. they lose one of their franchise players but will still manage to kill it. nope! this did not happen, however there were many rumors of laine being traded. fortnite legend.
colorado will be a powerhouse this season. with the addition of andre burakovsky, burky will find himself in denver and will be back to his normal self. yup! colorado managed to surprise everyone with their run.
the reigning 2019 stanley cup champions will suffer the post-cup summer. they will not make it past the second round of the playoffs. well, we shall see.
minnesota will have a slightly better season - they will start to make their comeback. with a new general manager hopefully they will be able to start conspiring a new plan to get their team back up. hopefully they will be better at drafting players they really need. umm... no. but they did make the playoffs with the formatting.
the wild and the flyers will make a trade. nope!
dallas will pretty much stay the same. they wont be much better, wont be much worse. not a lot will happen with the stars this year. pretty much! the stars finished 4th last season and 3rd this season.
nashville will possibly make the playoffs but will have an early first round exit. duchene will be a problem. tba, but dont think duchene is a problem.
standing predictions.
1st: winnipeg jets - 104 points 5th - 80 points
2nd: chicago blackhawks - 96 points 7th - 72 points
3rd: colorado avalanche - 93 points 2nd - 92 points
4th: nashville predators - 90 points 4th - 78 points
5th: st. louis blues - 85 points 1st - 94 points
6th: dallas stars - 83 points 3rd - 82 points
7th: minnesota wild -  80 points 6th - 77 points
final predictions.
eastern conference finals champions: philadelphia flyers
western conference finals champions: colorado avalanche (bold)
stanley cup final champions: philadelphia flyers
i’ll update after the post season:)

Reflection of the 2010′s in the NHL
Favorite season in the 2010′s
My favorite season by far in the NHL this decade, was the 2013-2014 season. This was the best season that the habs played this decade in my opinion. Not just in the regular season, but in the post season as well. While I know that the 2014-2015 season, was the better season overall in terms of points and numbers. That season, just felt like the “Carey Price show” rather than the habs show (Which resulted in a sloppy first round series with the pesky Sens, and a painful series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The 2013-2014 Season felt like the team wasn’t just relying on Carey Price. It felt like the team new he was the best goalie in the world. And they weren’t going to let his great play go to waste.
Resulting a deep playoff run, that only ended because a dirty play. (NO! I still haven’t forgiven Chris Kreider for the taking out Price in that series. And I never will!)
Favorite Player of the 2010′s
My favorite player of the 2010′s isn’t who you probably expect me to pick. And I honestly really thought about this one. You’d think I’d pick PK Subban. But really, it was Carey Price, and it has everything to do with being the heart and soul of the Canadiens, for all of this decade. I know that since I made this blog. I’ve made many posts and rants, that the habs overly rely on Price to steal games from the habs. But, he’s never complained about it. Not once. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a single comment, or criticism come from Price. That’s honestly why he’s my favorite player of decade. He let his play speak for him, all decade long.
Favorite Playoff series of the 2010′s
If you are a habs fan, and your favorite playoff season of the decade isn’t the 34th meeting between the Boston Bruins vs. Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. Shame on you. That series, was spectacular. It was everything a Habs vs Bruins series should have. Hard hits, dirty plays, shitty talking on and off the ice, amazing goaltending between Carey Price and Tukka Rask. Still remember the jumping for joy when Subban scored the game winner in game 1 OT. But it was game 6. Down 3-2 in the series and facing elimination home. Every player in the habs uniform that game, played at a whole new level. All of this capped off with a satisfying game 7 win, in a silenced TD Garden, after a 3-1 win.
Favorite Stanley cup Final of the 2010′s
I hate the fact that for a second decade in a row. The habs couldn’t get to the stanley cup finals!
However, that didn’t stop me from watching every stanley cup final during this decade. And so many of them were spectacular and memorable. The one that fits the favorite category was the 2012 Stanley cup Final.
There’s one reason why this is my favorite Finals. My high buddy predicted the LA Kings winning the cup. That’s right. In my final year of high school. My hockey crazed friend, told me with a straight face, the LA Kings would win the Stanley cup. This was before they changed coaches mind way though the season, and still stayed true to his prediction, when they made in as the eighth seed in the west. When I asked him why he thought they’d win, he gave me just gave me two names: Anze Kopitar, and Jonathan Quick.
The LA Kings themselves also made this a memorable series. Winning both games 1 and 2 on the road in OT, stopping the Devils on home ice in game three, only to lose both games 4 and 5, to have one of the most brutal plays of the decade, cause the dreaded five minute major to the Devils, that ended there season.
It was the first time an eight seed in North American Sports, ever won a Championship.
Most Disappointing NHL moment of the 2010′s
Sigh... For New York Rangers fans. Game 4 of the 2014 Eastern Conference Finals was an unforgettable night for one moment in particular. Martin St. Louis OT winner. It’s also my most Disappointing moment of the 2010′s. It was the first time since a 2011 World Junior Gold medal game, where my heart sank like a rock in a pond.
St. Louis goal, gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead in the series. the habs would bonce back with a 7-4 win in game six. That’s as much has the habs offense could must. As they could score again against the Rangers losing 1-0 in Madison Square Garden.
So many things happened in that series that I look back on as what if’s. What if Chris Kreider didn’t crash into Price on purpose and injure him? What if the offense didn’t dry up in game six? What if the five players on the ice remember Martin St. Louis was still in are zone before he scored that OT goal against are third sting goalie? Would have won a game seven back in Montreal?
These are the question that will never have answers...
Most Shocking moment of the 2010′s
Honestly, we had some shocking moments in the NHL this decade. Some on the ice, some off the ice. Yet, I don’t think anyone expected what happened during the 2017-2018 season.
No one! NOT A SINGLE PERSON! Predicted what happened that season. And if your did; you clearly owned a god damn time machine!
THE VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS.
A brand knew expansion team, with players picked up from the other 30 teams in the league; that either didn’t want them, tossed them away for cap relief, or just saw no harm in letting them leave for the new time. Some how managed to become the greatest expansion team in North American Sports History.
In their first season in the NHL. The Knight had a record of 51-24-7 for 109 points, and winning the Pacific division. They then swept the LA Kings in the first round, Humiliated the San Jose Sharks in the second round, and humbled the Winnipeg Jets (turning the entire nation of Canada against them), by beating them in 4-1 in the western conference finals to make the Stanley cup final. They would lost to the Capitals in five games in the Stanley up Final. However, that last part doesn’t change the fact that all these events happened...
IN THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS FIRST NHL SEASON!
Nothing that has happened in this decade will ever or can top that at least to me!

From the dynamic duo that brought you Glimpsing Happiness, PJ and I are proud to bring you another Blackinnon AU! Please enjoy, Like the Storybooks!
Marlene is the next in line to the throne, until her cousin James provides the kingdom with an heir. Being an eligible heiress attracts loathsome suitors. King James’s right hand man, Sir Sirius, could help her fend them off, but the knight of mysterious origins seems intent on becoming the next Sir Galahad.
We’ll update two chapters every Saturday, but you get four chapters today because I’m MIA next week. We’ll pick up again on Dec. 1st. <3

Chapter 1
It was unnerving, how quickly one's life could change. Half a year ago, Marlene had been far enough down the line of succession to be able to live her life more or less the way she wanted. Then the storm began. First, her Uncle and Aunt, Their Majesties King Fleamont and Queen Euphemia were taken by the plague, leaving her cousin James and his new wife Lily to reign over the kingdom of Phoenixordo, earlier than anyone had prepared for. Then, out of nowhere, her parents succumbed to the plague as well. Like the thunder after a strike of lightning, the newly anointed King James sent orders that Marlene was to live at the capital castle. As heiress presumptive to the throne, she needed protection. James’s letter, written to his cousin in his own hand stated, ‘I already have a Kingdom to manage, thus, I needn’t expend my energy fretting endlessly over my only family being kidnapped or murdered because she's too far away for me to keep an eye on her.’
Marlene resented the comment, but she had to admit, she had a bit of a reputation. Her father and mother had doted on her endlessly. She was their only child, and she was as bright as she was beautiful. Marlene was exactly what fairytales wrote about when they described princesses. Her blonde hair fell in gentle waves. The spark behind the vibrant blue of her eyes hinted at her spirited nature. She moved with such a grace that she’d become something of a distraction for the stable hands and serving boys. Her father had insisted that she was the most beautiful princess in the kingdom from the time she was 10. Her mother had constantly fussed over her, her hair, her clothes, and her posture. They'd given her the absolute best tutors and she'd excelled in her studies and was as sharp as a whip. Marlene was everything the world had expected of her. But after the course of the last month, the Princess was also very much alone.
At least with her cousin, King James, she might have some reprieve from feeling the constant weight of the loss of her parents. It hurt, and Marlene couldn't seem to move past the pain that ached in her chest. The thought that someone would use her as bargaining was troubling enough on its own, but added with everything else made her breathing labored. She welcomed the feeling of safety that came with living in the same fortress as his Majesty. It helped her to feel more secure than she had managed those few nights in her father's castle - her castle, she remembered - after James’ letter and guarded escort had arrived. She hadn't brought much, well, except her entire collection of dresses - which now included her mother's wardrobe - but those were essentials. At some point, she'd be able to put on her colorful dresses again without feeling a sense of wrongness within herself. Someday she wouldn't see her mother in every damned mirror. Someday.
Marlene had hated carriage rides since she was a child. They gave her headaches and made her spine rattle. She would have preferred to ride the whole way there on the back of her chestnut mare, Truda, but James’ guards advised her that it was completely out of the question. She missed the feeling of being a few very important places further down the line of succession. As a girl, and even as a maiden princess to some extent, she’d been permitted to do as she pleased; now she felt like someone’s gold chess piece.
Her ill temper was only increased by one of the courtiers of His Majesty's Court who decided his presence was necessary for her arrival. She stepped out of the carriage and tried to ignore the pounding in her very bones as the man stepped up to her. His features were not in and of themselves hideous. But it was somewhat disconcerting that it looked like he'd seen a portrait of her and then taken it upon him to recreate her image on himself. The way he styled and presented himself though was astoundingly garish. He wore an all lavender outfit, which he strutted about in with such flagrant pride that the color must have been intentional choice, rather than some aging tailor’s error. It made him resemble a decorative baked sweet. His curly blond hair was a bit of puffed cream topping and his blue eyes were some sort of garnish. That sort of thing never even tastes any good, in Marlene’s opinion. The overall image was hideous, and it would have perhaps been something to laugh to herself about later if it were not for the idiot believing that he was permitted to speak.
“Your Grace,” the man bowed and Marlene's upbringing and training kicked in and she nodded politely to acknowledge him before continuing to follow the escort to His Majesty’s office.
“I am Gilderoy Lockhart, Marquess of Occamy, heir to the Duchy of Oblivium, It’s an honor to make your acquaintance.” He followed after her and Marlene bit her tongue to keep from lashing out at him. He had no right to trouble her with his loathsome voice, let alone trail along after her like a spaniel.
“How lovely for you, my Lord.” She picked up the pace of her steps, in hopes of getting the point across.
“Not as lovely as you, dear Princess. You are everything that was rumored and more.”
“Yes, well,” Marlene focused on being a princess and controlling her tongue, “kind of you to listen to Court gossip about me and all but I have an appointment with his Majesty.”
“By all means, but do allow me the honor of escorting you to the door.” He moved to take her arm but she sidestepped him.
Marlene pursed her lips and let out a slow and even breath to steady her will. She knew there was no polite way to get rid of this clown, so she’d need to endure him for another hundred paces or so. She would just have to survive the pain of swallowing her more brazen insults.
“If you must.” She chose a lofty tone to try and push the issue that she was anything but interested in his company.
“I must. And I must confess that I have been longing to meet you since I saw your portrait. Never in my life have I seen a noble lady who looked quite so like myself. If we were to wed, our heirs would be so beautifully golden that the sun itself would look dull by comparison.”
Was this dunce truly out of his mind? Marlene smiled as her destination came into sight. “Right well… Best not give the sun any cause for anger. Good day, Lord Gilderoy.” With that, she let the door slam in Lockhart's face, taking pleasure in the moment of silence before she heard James chuckle.
“Little Marly is still slamming doors I see. Welcome to your new home, Cousin.” He stood and embraced her and Marlene took a moment to just be glad to be with family again, the last few months had been incredibly lonely. She and James had been great friends as young children, but it became dangerous to travel about a year before James started as a squire, Marlene’s parents put her visits to a halt. They kept her at home to protect her, and consequently, the cousin pair drifted apart. She took note of the small changes in what was Uncle Monty’s office while she was a child, with her only cousin's arms around her shoulders. Her only family now, she reminded herself. Whatever differences there were, the warm welcome of her cousin was a relief. She could finally start to fill in some of the emptiness that dwelt within her since they'd buried her parents.
“I only slam doors when someone has made themselves a pest.” She stepped out from his embrace and smirked up at him. He had gotten impossibly taller in the years she hadn't seen him.
“Who could possibly be pestering you?” James laughed and pulled a soft chair out for her. Marlene fell into it gladly.
“Some Lord Lockhart seems to be under the impression that I'd be his perfect bride,” Marlene drawled as James handed her a drink.
“Ah, that unfortunately,” James took a seat across from her and threw his feet onto the desk, “will be a problem in the foreseeable future. You’re my heiress presumptive. Even imbeciles like Lockhart know that marrying you is the best chance any other family has to ending up on the throne.”
“James, the absolute last thing I want is to end up on the throne. So would you mind doing your heiress presumptive a favor? Presume to go get an heir upon your wife! I’d be forever in your debt if you’d bestow upon me a little nephew or niece to dote on... and push all this ridiculous responsibility on to. Immediately would be preferable, but I’ll be kind and wait 9 moons.”
Marlene nearly jumped when a woman with beautiful red hair and piercing green eyes walked in laughing, accompanied by a tall man with jet black hair and pale skin. He could easily be the best looking man she'd ever seen, but Marlene reminded herself that after dealing with Lord Lockhart for five minutes she may very well have found something deeply appealing in anyone who was not him.
“Ah, my love,” James stood and the tall man smirked.
“Really your Majesty, not in front of the Queen! You’ll make her jealous.”
Marlene laughed, this man was dry, but there was something about the way he held himself that made Marlene feel like he was carrying a weight far greater than his humor could maintain.
James rolled his eyes and pulled the woman into his arms. “Lily this is the Princess Marlene, my cousin, and as she reminded me, the next in line until we produce an heir. She seems to think we ought to be putting more effort into that endeavor.” He nuzzled her neck and Queen Lily laughed.
Marlene curtsied low, with practiced elegance, “Your Majesty, it's so wonderful to meet you.”
Lily bowed her head, “Your Grace, I hope you'll find our castle to be a home to you now.”
Marlene chuckled, “Is that enough formality?”
“Heavens, yes!” Lily laughed and embraced Marlene. “I've heard so much about you from James and I've been so excited to get to meet you! He tells me you're quite the scholar. None of the Ladies here were properly educated and if I have to spend one more afternoon discussing the most popular color for fabrics this season, I'm going to scream.”
“Well, just respond to every comment on fabric colors with something philosophical or ask them about the fabric dye that most represents their mortal soul.” Marlene grinned wickedly and Lily laughed.
“I'm going to abscond with her,” she turned to James.
“Ah good,” the tall man drawled, “now my dearest King and I can profess our undying love and escape away unhindered.”
Lily rolled her eyes, “Marlene this is Sir Sirius. He's our cousin on his Majesty’s mother's side and his dearest friend. He’s let his reputation as the bravest knight in the kingdom go straight to his head. He thinks he can command an army and the heart of my own loving husband… the nerve” Lily smiled at her jest.
“One simply does one's best. Your Grace,” he nodded to her.
Marlene nodded politely and noted that he didn't immediately propose marriage, or really bother with her at all. That was what she wanted with these new courtiers, to be left alone.
“I regret that we must bid you farewell until dinner, dear Ladies.” James kissed Lily's hand and stared at her for a moment like a lovesick puppy before sighing and pulling away. “Sir Sirius and I have some work to hammer out.”
Lily linked her arm with Marlene's and pulled her through a different door that thankfully didn't have Lord Gilderoy Lockhart standing on the other side.

NHL Expansion Draft rumors
(All times are Eastern)11:45 a.m. — Seattle has perhaps found its first captain in 37-year-old Mark Giordano, plucked from new Pacific Dvision rival Flames. BREAKING - I can confirm that the Seattle Kraken have chosen Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano as their pick at the Expansion Draft, to be announced this evening. — Salim Nadim Valji (@salimvalji) July 21, 202111:37 a.m. — Seattle has reportedly sourced its goalies from Florida, Washington and Ottawa. Sounds like the three goaltenders selected by #SeaKraken will be Chris Driedger (FLA), Vitek Vanecek (WSH) and Joey Daccord (OTT).@DFOHockey — Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 21, 202111:33 a.m. — Kaapo Kahkonen was widely speculated to be one of Seattle's goalie selections.  As of this very moment, I'm getting the impression that the Kraken did NOT take #mnwild goalie Kaapo Kahkonen.We shall see. If true, that'd leave Carson Soucy, Victor Rask, Nick Bjugstad, Brennan Menell, plus free agents/minor leaguers — Michael Russo (@RussoHockey) July 21, 202111:30 a.m. — The NHL Expansion Draft has so far been a buzzkill for anyone hoping for chaos. Gabriel Landeskog, a pending UFA, won't be Seattle's pick from Colorado. Know some fans are wondering about this…but hearing SEA did not reach an agreement with Gabriel Landeskog. — Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) July 21, 202111:21 a.m. — This means Alex Kerfoot is staying put in Toronto. His stay was short-lived in Toronto. The #SeaKraken will be selecting Jared McCann from the #Leafs.The end result: Toronto traded prospect Filip Hallander and a 7th round pick to Pittsburgh to essentially protect their roster from Seattle.@DFOHockey — Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 21, 202111:16 a.m. — Another big name who won't be headed to Seattle. Sources say #SeaKraken also passed on another high-profile, big money player: Vladimir Tarasenko.Subject to change but sounds like the selection from #stlblues will be Vince Dunn.@DFOHockey — Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 21, 202111:10 a.m. — It appears Carey Price to Seattle was all talk. According to sources, the Kraken did NOT select Carey Price in the expansion draft. He remains property of the Montreal Canadiens@TSNHockey @TheAthletic — Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) July 21, 202111:07 a.m. — Could Vladimir Tarasenko be at the center of one of today's biggest side deals? If the Kraken take Tarasenko from the Blues (and I have no confirmation they will), hearing there are teams that have already told Seattle they would trade for him if the Kraken would retain salary... @TSNHockey @TheAthletic — Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) July 21, 202110:40 a.m. — Brandon Tanev is the Penguins guy? Interesting. Early word is #SeaKraken have zeroed in on Brandon Tanev from the #pens.Kraken already unfolding as tough to play against. With Brandon in the Kraken fold, looking forward to potential Tanev v. Tanev brother matchups in the Pacific. @DFOHockey — Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 21, 202110 a.m. — The Kraken have submitted all the deets to the NHL. Now we wait.9:57 a.m. — Another pending UFA but time is ticking on when things need to be submitted to the NHL. The Kraken had contract talks with pending UFA Jaden Schwartz but ultimately did not sign him during the window which just closed, source confirms. So the Kraken's pick will be another Blues player. Dunn? Tarasenko?@TSNHockey @TheAthletic — Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) July 21, 2021MORE: Everything you need to know about the Expansion Draft9:05 a.m. — A little shocking that Larsson is not re-signing with the Oilers who reportedly offered him similar money. Further to Frank's reporting, Adam Larsson has a four-year deal with #SeaKraken -- hearing it'll be a $4M AAV.Seattle locked him during its exclusive UFA/RFA interview period. https://t.co/7HAV5aVD3C — Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) July 21, 20219:42 a.m.. — Any thought of the Kraken taking anyone but Gourde appears to be squashed. Early word is #SeaKraken were focused in on one player from #GoBolts lot: Yanni Gourde.Not entirely clear how tonight will work. Teams wondering if he's the only Tampa player heading to Seattle? Could change. But sense is Gourde will be a Kraken before night is done. @DFOHockey — Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 21, 20218:58 a.m. — The first news comes down. If it is in fact Larsson and Oleksiak, they will be the only players Seattle can select from the Oilers and Stars, respectively. Early word is #SeaKraken are closing in on contracts with two UFA defensemen: Adam Larsson (EDM) and Jamie Oleksiak (DAL).Not finalized. But barring any last minute change, the expectation is those players will be the selections from #Oilers and #GoStars.@DFOHockey — Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 21, 2021 Read the full article

My Stella arc
So this is a bit of a rewrite of the Dragon Cry movie, but seeing if it can actually be tied into the world of FT and the fact that I actually do want to explore the world of Stella. (This takes place in between Pergrande and Tenrou Island)
It opens Natsu and Wendy after getting chewed out by the magic council for the shit they did in Pergrande. While that happens, Lahar asks one of his men to go on a special mission involving Fairy Tail.
Once back FT everyone is discussing up coming S-Class Trials and Natsu meets all his other teammates and says Wendy should be on team Natsu.
Gray kinda thinks Wendy could be better off with a simpler team or mage who doesn’t take very intense jobs like Reedus or Laki, but Natsu says he wants Wendy on their team after seeing what happened in Pergrande.
Erza says they should all take a mission to show Wendy the type of work they do, and Gray has a job form, Catch the dark mage Velveno. Lucy remembers the request form because Gray showed it to her before she went to Acalypha.
They also notice that the bounty went up from 2,000,000 jewels to 4,000,000 jewels. Mainly because Velveno took on a few mages since his prison escape and defeated them. Gray eyeing Jet and Droy who accepted the mission while team Natsu went to Acalypha the find Lucy, and both of them were beaten
It cuts to Velveno meeting with a guy in a cloak named Chase, in this shantytown. Velveno asks if Chase has the goods and Chase says its out back.
Then team Natsu arrive and a lot of the criminals panic then go to attack them. Velveno is freaked out, and demands to see the “goods”, which turns out to be a magic cannon.
Eventually Velveno is defeated and Gray grabs Chase after he tried to flee.
Chase begins to beg to be let go, saying that he’s only a middle man, and not a dark mage. Gray questions what he’s talking about, but Erza continues to interrogate.
He says that the weapon came from Stella from an underground ring there, and begs to be let go or get a few years off his prison sentence. Before he can say more a group of knights from the Fiore military show up led by vice captain of the Fiore military, Riana
When Riana says that the Team will be paid like normal, Erza stops Riana and shows her the begging Chase and his confession and Riana orders the Team to wait while she brings this news to the king
It then cuts to Mercurius where magic knight Kama, is approached by Kamika and Casmos who know that today is the day that Kama became the captain of the Fiore Garou knights. He merely sulks away.
He enters the throne room where Toma Fiore is on a communication lacrima with Dalton
The king says that this is quite a pickle and says that he will contact Stella’s queen right away.
It cuts to the team entering the building with Natsu saying to Erza to remember that time he broke into save her.
They approach a room with Dalton in it and behind him a massive screen made of magic, projecting the king on it.
The FT mages are curious why they are even here and Dalton reveals that he man they caught was a middle man for a high-grade magic weapons manufacturer, that is located in Stella.
Dalton then makes another projector with the minister of magic in Stella on it. The minister is named Swan and she says that she, the king of Fiore and the queen of Stella have discussed the situation, Erza asking what this has to do with them.
Their job was to catch Velveno who was nothing more than a dark mage, but in doing so they discovered a lead that is potentially life saving.
Stella recognizes that this information would never have came to light without their help and that their monetary reward does not seem appropriate for their contribution, so the queen of Stella has arranged for them to have a vacation in the capital of Stella, Altair
The team all think it sounds fun, Erza and Gray happy for a break before S-Class trial, Lucy because Stella is a country with tons of knowledge on celestial spirits (Stella means star after all), and Natsu and Wendy gets a new area to look for their dragons
They make it to Stella’s capital and on their ride they are shocked by this giant crystal growing out of the ground. Their driver explains that it is Stellanium and type of crystal similar to lacrima only instead of holding magic it holds starlight
The team is dressed up all nice to meet the queen and are led there by Stella’s chief of staff, Doll. The queen of Stella is a woman named Sonya Stella. She is very happy to meet mages from the renowed Fairy Tail. Lucy is shocked that their popularity reaches other countries though the destruction caused in their recent years also reaches everyone.
Then enters two members from the number one guild in Stella, Master Zash Caine and Guild Ace Gapri
Gapri says hi to Doll, but addresses him as “Master Marcel”, but Doll glares saying that he doesn’t go by that name anymore and Gapri says “Captain Doll”
Gapri is gloating a bit saying that as the best guild in Stella they can ensure this will get done quick. Sonya says that she did want the FT team to meet the Zash and Gapri because they were the first to accept the job to find the weapon manufacturer
Natsu gets a little aggressive towards Gapri with Gapri saying that they’ll handle this easily and Zash’s eyebrow raising his eyebrow a bit. But Zash stops Gapri
Sonya says for the FT team to go at and enjoy Altair.
The group splits off with Erza, Wendy, and Carla going out to eat, with Wendy bonding with Erza and Erza telling her that regardless of her magic, Wendy could become a great mage and Wendy blushes.
Gray and Happy checking into their hotel, Happy loving how big the room is and Gray likes the fact that they get a great view of the castle
Lucy visits a key shop and is shocked by all the silver keys. The shop keeper is wowed by Lucy having gold keys and Lucy is bummed that they don’t have any gold keys. But the shop owner shows Lucy that keys aren’t the only thing they have and shows that they have weapons for Celestial mages and shows her a whip called the Fleuve d'étoiles
Natsu goes up to the Stella castle’s balcony and see they beautiful starry sky.
Zash meets Natsu up there and begins to talk. Zash asks if Natsu has any goals. Natsu tells Zash about his dream to find his father and that he’s a dragon. Zash then says that from what hes heard is that Natsu has magic related to dragons and Natsu explains that it’s Dragon SLayer Magic
Zash begins to look at Natsu and starts calling him a wild, untamed beast, who will just destroy this country like he’s known for
Natsu’s eyes glow and attack Zash and starts destroying the castle. Everyone tries to reel in Natsu when he moves the fight outside, but he seems to ignore their attempts
People are a little surprised to see that Zash’s normal strength is actually keeping up with Natsu
Gapri joins the fight explaining its Zash’s blood magic. He can circulate his blood in his body and charge it to increase his muscle activity
Doll tries to attack Natsu with his fire magic, but is shocked by Natsu being able to eat the flames and Doll has a small flash back to a shadowy figure and says that Natsu eating his flames and it reminds him of “that day”
Doll reveals his weapons under his clothing, two dolls named François and Catherine. Lucy realizing it’s similar to Bickslow’s magic. (Though the beams fired are red and not green)
Natsu actually uses brilliant flare and there is intense flames surging. Zash says he’ll get rid of the flames
He uses a blue jar-looking thing that absorbs all the flames. Zash says this container is special as it absorbs a magic and negates anything affected by the magic
Eventually Natsu suddenly calms down and curious what the hell happen, but he’s knocked out by Doll
The queen is disgusted, but Erza states Natsu would only do this if someone was acting antagonistic towards him or FT. Wendy remembering Pergrande saying that he would only do something like that if there was someone being miss treated.
Zash steps up to Doll and saying he did insult Natsu, but he didn’t say he wanted to fight he said he was surprised that he had such a destructive magic and it fits him. Natsu then threw the first blow.
Doll says regardless if Zash did goad Natsu, Natsu still caused all this damage. The queen agrees to have Natsu put on trial, but for now he will be detained and the rest of the team placed under close watch
While people adjust, Zash says he must make a stop, but Gapri wants to follow Zash. Zash then looks Gapri in the eye and mind controls him to leave.
Cut to Zash entering a mine shaft where many people are constructing weapons, and a massive dragon skeleton. Zash then asks how is the Quartum project coming and someone complain that picking off the remains of the dragon is taking forever.
Zash asks one of his minions, Coordinator, how their progress actually is and she says that they still have to deal with powering of these things.
We find out that the Quartum are the “ultimate magic weapon” made of an alloy combining steel and Stellanium. The issue is that the energy source they wanted it to work on comes from Dragon slayer magic as it can power many things. Problem is no dragon slayer’s are in Stella so they’ve been picking off fossilized remains of a former dragon and siphoning off what magic they have left
Zash shows off all the magic he stole from Natsu and says that they can now make their army ahead of schedule and they already have a buyer set up
Cut to Natsu in prison who is still pretty baffled by what’s going on. While there he meets another inmate by the name of Mash, who originally had one of the biggest stellanium distribution stations until a few months ago. but he then found that after blanking out for a little bit he was under arrest as he had currently made several deals in transitions to noted dark guilds inside Stella.
Natsu asks why that’s weird and Mash explains that it was not something he had done in his entire life only that he had suddenly made tons of distribution orders in only a few minutes
He then states that Zash then investigated and concluded that these were in fact dirty deals. Natsu hears about Zash and realizes that something happened when he met Zash and because he remembers fighting him but doesn’t really remember why. And thinking about it a lot of the fight was hazy.
Mash asks if maybe they’re is something in common, but Natsu just hopes his friends are okay
It cuts to the FT members in their hotel room with a few guards around it
Gray and Erza both agree that this is bullshit, Lucy saying Natsu may be destructive, but he always did it with good intention. Happy says that Natsu still has some issues being insulted, but even so, this deliberate destruction seems way too odd
Then a guard comes in with a communication lacrima with the King on the line.
The king, surrounded by Arcadios and Kama, is outraged at what happened, but Erza begins explain that Natsu was fighting against a man named Zash who apparently talked to him.
Kama goes wide-eyed and asks if his name is Zash Caine. And when they confirm it all of the men in the throne room sweat.
Kama states that Zash is a traitor against Fiore. Suddenly we get a flashback showing Zash as the magic knight head and how Kama was his vice captain. The flashback explaining that Zash has the power of mind control by making direct eye contact, but the issue with this is the mind control will only last for about five minutes, then the person who was mind controlled will forget most of his actions during those five minutes and completely forget a minute before getting controlled, essentially erasing Zash’s moment of eye contact
Toma says he’ll call Sonya. With the team thinking this is bad, but given they’re still being watched they gotta be careful on how they act.
Lucy says they could sneak into the prison where Natsu is being held, but Happy notes that might be hard while under lock and key.
By saying that, Lucy whispers in Happy’s ear that she has a plan and explains it. We see that her plan is to distract the guards with her gold key. As Stella is known for all of its silver key shops she’ll blow the guards away with actual zodiac
While the guards are completely awestruck, Happy then sneaks out in ninja mode
Cutting to Doll who’s brushing his dolls hair remembering some of the fire that Natsu made. Sonya then is called by Toma and she feels like this is a personal attack because in the last 10 years, Zash has been a hero.
Doll even vouching for him as the master of his former guild, and that it’s the best guild in the country.
The king however points out that no stories of Zash ever reached this country or any others. Doll takes that as an insult saying that just because Fiore’s mages are known internationally for their exploit doesn’t mean that Stella is any lesser than them.
But Arcadios interjects saying that he literally has never been published in either the news or weekly sorcerer. She might deliberately be hiding his whereabouts. Doll and Sonya are a little shook especially when they’ve had interviewers come down and did see Zash in action. Kama says Zash has mind control, probably used it to help cover his tracks.. Doll say they’ll bring in Zash for questioning.
Cutting to Zash who’s talking to the buyer, Bluenote, and he asks why that artificial army that they ordered hasn’t shown up, especially after all the money they’ve poured in. Zash says that the Quartum army will be finished ahead of schedule, thanks to recently aquiring a sum of dragon slayer magic.
Bluenote says that’s good because his Master has a fondness for lost magic. Zash doesn’t care about their interest just that it keeps up revenue
Coordinator, the developer of armor, and Cannon, developer of firearms, are shocked how well Natsu’s magic is working. Zash ends the call, saying that he has his inside a man looking over Natsu
It cuts to a man in the Stella prison who is smiling making sure to edit the reports of Natsu’s detainment so that they all avoid mentioning Zash. We learn the guard is named Cream and he goes to check on the screaming Natsu who claims this is wrong.
Cream checks on them but while doing so, Happy sneaks into the prison
Natsu and Mash are yelling, about this. Cream walks up to their cell and tells them to shut up. Natsu says that whatever is going on they want to talk to that Zash guy. Cream laughs saying that Zash is the most trusted man in all of Stella next to Doll and Sonya.
Cream uses a little bit of fire magic to shoot Mash in the nose. Natsu tries smashing against Tthe cage yelling at Cream.
Happy arrives, finding the floor that Natsu is on and sees Cream threatening Natsu. Saying that with Zash on their side and the stuff that Natsu did, he’ll most likely get sent to Black Vox mage prison if this is considered an international crime but as a national crime here in Stella he might get executed.
Happy yells out that this is wrong and Cream shoots at Happy. Happy throws a key at Natsu’s cage which Mash grabs and passes it to Natsu to get his bindings off. Cream shoots Mash through the shoulder, and Natsu busts out of prison yelling that he’ll make Cream pay for abusing the people around him
Then it cuts between team FT feeling down and hoping Happy is okay, then cutting to Doll arriving at the guild of Gapri and Zash, demanding to see Zash. Gapri questions why is he even bothering Zash is a hero.
Doll says he wants to talk to Zash because of information coming from Fiore. Gapri is angered by this saying that Fiore’s words are just slandering Zash’s name because they are jealous that Zash is as strong as he is.
Gapri and Doll see that Zash is on the top floor. Zash says he knows why Doll is here, and he’s already taken action. Gapri is shook by this yelling for Zash to explain this, but Zash shows he’s just a thought projection.
Gapri begins to tear up as he gets flashes of Zash becoming the new guild master and filling him with the idea that Gapri needs to care about himself if he wants to be a great me and needs to understand that everybody else is also out for themselves and that you need to know how to survive in a world like that if you wanna ab strong
Gapri cries, gets on his board and super speed’s to the prison saying all this bad stuff happen the second that Natsu showed up.
Natsu beats up Cream, but then sees that Gapri has entered the area. Mash tries to tell Gapri that Natsu isn’t A bad guy but Gapri thanks it’s only natural that to criminals brought in by Zash have bonded.
Natsu and Gapri fight until they are interrupted by Doll. Doll hugs Gapri telling him its over and that the evidence is overwhelming and Zash must be found. All of the FT mages are released, Doll saying that they should stay here, but Erza says they’ll come too.
Doll says it’s a violation, but Erza says that if Zash is a former Fiore mage, then he is their responsibility and regardless of what country they’re all part of the same system so they should work together to clean up this mess.
It cuts to Fiore where the King has Kama go out to Stella with some troops because they used to work with Zash in the magic knight division
The group is using Natsu and Wendy’s noses to locate the mineshaft that the manufacturers are using. Zash is alerted to this and tells Coordinator to shut off the elevator and handle it while he finishes up the Quartum Army
The group of mages are surprised when they enter the first floor of the minds and see that there’s tons of holes in the walls, Coordinator getting on a loud speaker, saying that if they want to make it to the next level will have to get past one of their new items on their manufacturing list.
Out of The holes comes tons of people on boards similar to Gapri’s and everyone tries to push back. Gray notices that there are Lacrima on the bottom of the boards and that they should aim for them.
Lucy uses Sagittarius, Erza flight armor, and Wendy even gives them the vernier to increase speed
They make it to the next floor where they need to deal with a rabid dog that is being controlled. And Lucy test out her new whip on it.
Eventually getting past that Gapri gets anxious and bolts ahead of everybody else. It then shows a smoking Zash who begins to think about how he’ll have to start up all over again after this. Cutting to Kama heading for Stella.
A flashback shows that Zash found The Eclipse Gate inside the Royal Palace. Kama confronted him and Zash revealed his believe in the world that everybody is focused on themselves and he’s just doing the same.
Kama questions how he’ll do that, Zash explaining that in history three things shape everything: intelligence, money, and weaponry. With his knowledge he’ll obtain all that and he’ll be able to survive in this world
Kama and Zash fight, Kama yelling that surviving by condemning everyone else is bull crap, but when it looks like Zash will win, Kama cut Zash underneath his eye blinding his mind control ability. After the fight Kama awoke and learned Zash escaped and Kama was prompted to The captain of the magic knights the flashback ends as Kama sayys he’ll finish everything with Zash.
Coming back to the floors, Gapri is on the third floor, and he doesn’t see anybody but then starts getting hit by something screaming about how his ear hurt.
The rest of the mages find Gapri’s body, and then find out what this floor is there is a super powered sound system releases high blasts of sound magic on this floor. The game is to shut it off before they all die.
Gray makes a set of headphones out of the ice to fight against the sound waves and cuts off the system, giving them to the final floor. Coordinator saying she’ll have to stall them. While Zash boots up the Quatron army
Erza fights Coordinator, while Gapri zooms past them all, with Natsu and the others following behind, but on the way through the tunnel to where the dragon skeleton is being keeped, several guards led by Cannon burst out of the wall and ambush all of the mages.
Doll says he’ll deal with him and Gray takes the smaller guards
Doll’s fight is brutal with Cannon trying destroy his François and Catherine, but Doll always steps in front of each shot at the dolls. He refuses to let his daughters die as he gets shot showing in a flashback a dark mage did battle with him and his guild when he was the master of it and called Marcel, then watched his daughter die from burns. Trying to save them with human possession magic
He admits that he will always protect them as that is the job of the father. Cannon calls him an idiot, but notices the ground cracking above him, Cannon realizes every time Doll shielded his daughters, the dolls fired a beam of magic at the top of the cave that already had holes in it and weakened it to the point it collapsed
Erza eventually defeats Coordinator by revealing the flaw in her “ultimate armor” and that’s the scythe it’s throwing leaves her completely open. Natsu, Wendy, and Lucy run after Gapri.
Gapri sees Zash and demand answers. Gapri feels betrayed after what Zash had done, but Zash mind controls Gapri to kill Natsu and the others.
Lucy and Wendy with the help of Happy and Carla shatter Gapri’s board
Zash also tries to get Erza, but that is stopped by Erza’s artificial eye. When he sees that there are mages of her caliber here and that Gapri’s mind control is wearing off, he activates the Quartums.
Zash escapes while everyone else deals with the Quartums and Natsu goes to take out Zash, who is escaping with a few Quartum samples so that he can sell them to Bluenote and for compensation he’ll use their clout in the underworld to help him jump start his next buisness. He also is seen planting something inside the roof of the shaft.
Natsu confronts Zash and Natsu wants to fight. They fight eventually bring them to the face of the rotted dragon. Natsu is curious about this and Zash says that the Quartrums were made form this. That this land was once covered by invading dragons who sought to the flower humans and now that wrath will be turned into weapons.
Natsu and Zash fight, with Zash’s full blood doped up form activating. Natsu tries to avoid the mind controlled by wrapping and scarf around his eyes. With Zash’s power and Natsu’s handicap it’s going to be tough and eventually the scarf is knocked off.
Before he can mind control Natsu, Gray jumps up behind him and freezes over his eyes. Thus, changing the fight.
Finally, Zash is on the ground but declares his drive to save himself and activates the bomb he was planting to the roof intending to cave in everybody but himself.
Cutting to the Fiore magic knights and Stella knights, they get a report. The mission has gone south with Zash escaping, but Kama says that he may know where Zash is going, remembering the only sample of Zash’s DNA they found was from the cut Kama gave him near a private dockyard.
In the mineshaft everyone escapes with the help of Gray and Lucy
Zash is limping away, as result of using all of his blood doped up form his body is somewhat burnt out. He remembers his first start into becoming an arms dealer after defecting.
Kama finds Zash with The army and before Zash can take control of anybody. He is defeated by Kama.
The arc wraps up with all of the FT mages being thanked and the fact that in this world and they need to stand united. With Natsu saying he was glad this vacation helped him train for the S-Class trials
It cuts to Bluenote who tlls Ultear that a lot of money they just wasted on the Quartum progect, but Ultear says that for their upcoming plan they’ll just have to bring in ll their sub guilds. Bluenote gets a call from Zancrow who says that he finally got his hands on the last “Key”
When the FT mages return home, they are surprised by a new face, Mest Gryder, but people seem to act like they’ve meet him before. Except for Mystogan and Makarov
So yeah this was my other attempt at world building and story writing, hope you like it, any criticism welcomed

Chapter Three
~Devil in a Blue Dress ~
The amount of emotion that swirled around in Link’s chest was unbearable, to say the least. Ten years worth of memories, buried within the depths of his mind, slowly rising again to the surface as he and the rest of the royals graced through the black gates of Castle Town. Link closed his eyes and gripped Epona’s reins tight, as he refused to look at the curious faces that had begun to form a line around the succession. He didn’t want to see or recognize anything, or anyone for that matter. He didn’t want to remember what his life was like before the incident. To remember all of the times he had run down these very streets, playing tag and hide and seek with Amie and all his other friends. He didn’t want to remember the way he and his father would spar in the front yard, the clanking of wooden training weapons filling the air, while his mother sat upon the porch, watching briefly as she held her nose in her favorite book—
He—didn’t want to remember.
Because if he remembered this, then he would also remember that the incident ruined everything.
That the incident ruined him.
“Link.”
He heard his name and was forced to open his eyes. It appeared that the succession had came to a stand still, most of the Knights and Guards abandoning the group to go off and join with their families. A sudden flash of his own father, coming home from a long trip and finally gracing through the door, captured his mind. A memory of Link running down the stairs and jumping up and into his father’s arms as his mother stood in the kitchen, preparing supper—
Link forced himself to freeze the memory before any more emotion could compromise him. He lifted his eyes to his speaker. The King was now riding next to him, his white hair blowing in the wind.
“Are you alright?” He asked.
No. Link thought. I’m far from alight. But he held his tongue from saying that. Instead, he just silently nodded his head.
King Rhoam gave him a look of incredulity, but didn’t necessarily call him out on it.  “Follow me.” He said as he motioned his horse forward. Link obeyed, keeping his vision set ahead. It took him a moment to see that they were headed for another gate, much similar to the one they had already passed through. It was massive, and the frame was made completely from obsidian. The door itself was crafted with glass and painted in the center was the Hyrule Wingcrest.
Link tilted his head to the sky and suddenly realized the beauty that mounted above him. He may have had some memories of Hyrule Castle from his early childhood, but none of them amounted to what was suddenly upon him. This was unlike anything he had ever seen before. The architecture was outstanding and the attention to detail, even more so. And it was tall—so tall that Link could swear it was touching the clouds.
The gateway approached quickly, and as they crossed underneath, more recollection began to wash over Link. A memory of his father, walking him down these very pathways, recanting stories and legends of all the battles that had taken place here at the Castle. Telling him the stories of fallen Heroes and Champions, and how they had given their life to save the ancient Kingdom. Link had listened, quietly intrigued at the battle driven stories filled with blood, gore and sacrifice. Those were always his favorite.
Now he hated them.
Link shook the memory from his wired brain as the King halted his horse and dismounted. Behind them, the castle entrance rattled and creaked before the old rusty hinges came to life. Link glanced back just on time to see the obsidian gates sealing behind him.
No turning back now. He thought
Not that he could, even if he wanted too…
With Castle Town now locked behind him, Link felt a little bit at ease. At least now, (hopefully) he wouldn’t have to be bombarded with old and unnerving memories. Maybe now he could just focus on the situation at hand and go back to ignoring and suppressing his emotions. He dismounted Epona, and took a deep breath. The hardest part had still yet to come, but Link couldn’t help but feel a sense of calmness now that he allowed himself to realize he had made it to Central Hyrule in one piece.
Mipha would be glad, He thought.
“Welcome back, your grace.” A royal Guardsman made his way over to where Link and the King were stood. He was dressed like all the others in the Capital, sterling silver armor gleaming in the dusk light. He had a mop of jet black hair and a beard that covered most of his face. His posture was tall and stern as he spoke with King Rhoam. “How was your trip?”
“Tiring.” Rhoam mumbled as he handed the reins of his horse over to the Guardsman. “I’m getting old, Dario.”
“Oh please, you grace,” Dario took the reins, a smile tugging underneath his beard. “You’re young compared to the Maesters.”
“Don’t flatter your King,” He grinned, a hint a tease in his voice. Rhoam walked closer to where Link was standing and grabbed Epona’s reins as well, handing them over. “Take them both to the stables.”
“Of course, and shall I inform the chef to prepare for supper now that you’ve returned?” Dario questioned.
“Please.” The King answered simply.
As the black haired Guardsman began to walk Epona away, Link felt a lump form in his throat. He had grown attached to her rather quickly over the past few days and the thought of her being alone in a stable full of strange horses just didn’t sit right with him. He would have felt much better if she had stayed with him…Even if that meant him having to sleep outside again…
“I’ll have your belongings brought up to your room.” King Rhoam’s voice filled his ears, pulling his attention away from his beloved steed.
Link gave him wary, yet questionable look. “My…room?”
“You’ll be staying in the Castle, of course.” He placed a hand on Link’s shoulder, making him feel uncomfortable. “You’re a guest. An esteemed one, at that.”
Link gulped. He had been in the Capital a total of ten minutes and already he felt like an immense amount of pressure was being put on him. Already being given titles he’s yet to earn. He did his best to appear normal. Again, silently nodding while forcing himself to not break eye contact with his Majesty.
King Rhoam, satisfied with his response, dropped the hand from shoulder and began to walk up the slanted granite aisle. He called out over his shoulder. “This way, boy.”
Link followed behind, jogging to keep pace with the King. He lead them through a massive archway, made entirely of gray masonry. Beyond that lied a dimly lit corridor which eventually turned into a stone staircase, leading up and into the Castle hallways.
There were more people trailing through the regal halls then Link had expected. Every few minutes or so, someone new would pass by, shoulders brushing his as they did. Some appeared to be servants and maids, while others were Knights and perhaps advisers. Either way, to say that Link felt out of place, was an understatement. He looked filthy compared to all of the pristine Royals. He looked like a peasant who had somehow gotten lost and managed to break into the establishment. If it wasn’t for the King’s escort, Link was more than certain he would have been mistakenly thrown out by now.
Soon, after what felt like hours of slipping through endless passageways, they finally made their way into the main foyer, which the King referred to as The Grand Atrium. The space was incredible, and once again Link found himself in awe as he stood in the middle of the Palace. The ceiling was immense and made entirely out of glass. The marvelous sun rays shined through, giving the brilliant room a golden glow. Intricate porcelain columns stood high, while a magnificent spiral staircase was placed perfectly in the center, the royal red carpet flowing down the steps like a bleeding waterfall.
“This is where I leave you.” King Rhoam stopped his march and turned to Link, whose gaze was tilted up, eyes drinking the stunning arena. “Your room is up those stairs, down the hall, and third door on the right. I’ll have someone sent to you when supper is ready.”
Link then moved his sight to Rhoam, who had already turned away and begun to take leave. He opened his mouth, racking his brain for words, but before he could even formulate a response, Link was alone and left to his own devices.
He wasn’t sure what to do first. A part of him wanted to explore. To run down the labyrinthine halls and allow himself to get lost within the beauty that was Hyrule Castle. Another part, wanted to retreat to his room and shut himself off from the world and his racing thoughts. Somehow, while weighing out the two options, he found himself climbing the spiral staircase. Slowly placing one foot in front of the other as he made his way up to the second floor.
Upon reaching the top, Link was greeted with an overabundance of paintings, hung up on the noble walls. They were in all different sizes, and a few must have been quite old, given by the faded colors and aged state of the parchment. Some were of impeccable detail, capturing every line and element perfectly of a face, while others were haphazard and messy, just briefly bleeding colors together to create an image underneath.  As he paced down the corridor, eyes lingering over the ancient canvases, he noticed that most of them portrayed numerous members of the royal family. Generations and generations of Kings and Queens, and most of the faces, Link didn’t seem to recognize at all.
There was however, one portrait he most definitely could identify. It was the most recent portrait of the royal family, featuring King Rhoam, his Queen and a little girl, who stood in between them. The painting may have been more recent than the rest, but was still at least over a decade old. Rhoam was pictured with a head full of yellow hair, accompanied by a neatly groomed beard of the same shade. The Queen, portrayed much the same with her own sunlight locks, giving her flawless skin a glow which made her appear ethereal. And the little girl, no older then five or six, also was shown with golden strands which fell gracefully around her small frame. Her eyes were the color of emeralds and they sparkled in a way that looked so realistic, even for a painting.
Link found his eyes lingering on the little girl. He felt something stir within him, as if he had seen her before, as if he had known her. He assumed the girl was the Princess, given that fact that she was placed between the two rulers of Hyrule. Link scanned his brain for any memories of her, any moments he might have graced his eyes upon her while living in Castle Town, but found none. All he could find was this feeling of—something—he couldn’t quite put his hands on. He didn’t understand why he was drawn to her, or what this feeling was..but he knew, deep somewhere in his memories, he had known her. And not just from word of mouth, as the Hyrule family was quite the popular topic throughout the Hylians, No—he knew her. As if they were friends before—or acquaintances, or—something—
Link turned away from the painting, his head and chest hurting with this feeling. Just as he did so, he felt another pressure suddenly upon his chest. This pressure was warm and inviting and smelled like dandelions and hyrule herb. This pressure was the feeling of someone unintentionally bumping into him as they hurried down the silent hallway.
Link stumbled back at the sudden pressure of someone crashing into him, as multiple books and papers fell at his feet. They hit the ground with a thump, followed by a breathy curse.
“Shit.”
Whoever had bumped into Link was now kneeling in front of him, hands scouring the ceramic tiled floor. They wore an elegant blue velvet cloak, the hood cast over their head and covering up their identity. All Link could see were a few long strands of blond that managed to slip out as they bent over. It was a female, he noted. He could tell by her small frame and the daintiness of her hands and pale fingers. He could also tell by the soft and honey-covered voice that blew musically past her lips.
“I-I’m so sorry. I-I didn’t even see you there. I was in such a hurry, I-”
“It’s…ok…” Link said quietly as he bent down to help her pick up what she had dropped all over the floor. There were ancient books, for the most part, covered in text he didn’t recognize. Perhaps a different language, he thought. However most of the writings were symbols and hieroglyphics, which didn’t necessarily fit into any language Link had ever heard of. As for the various singles of parchment, that littered the ground, he took notice that they seemed to be schematics for a machine of some sort. Although, what kind of machine would be this intricate? He mused as he tilted his head, trying to make sense of the complicated diagram. He was shortly interrupted by the sound of her voice again, singing to him in a way that made him feel beat in his chest.
“No, it’s not. I should’ve been—” She stopped then. Her wondrous vocals coming to a halt as she looked up at Link. He met her eyes and felt a lump in his throat as that feeling began to creep up in his chest again.
With her now looking directly at him, the hood fell back a bit, giving him a little access to her features. Astonishing emerald eyes beamed into his, while her sun kissed hair swept beautifully around her heart-shaped face. Her skin was pale, but her lips and cheeks were pink, and Link couldn’t help but feel the aching presence of remembrance as he studied her face. He also felt another beat in his chest. And even though his view was obstructed mostly by the azure hood, it was obvious to him that he didn’t need to see the rest of her, underneath that cloak. He could already tell she was undeniable beautiful.
She tilted her head and studied Link’s features as well. Her eyes filling up with the same confusion, yet familiarity. Did she feel it too, He thought. This aching feeling of recognition…She spoke then, lips parting and a warm breath drawn his way, causing an involuntary shiver.
“Have we met before?” She asked. Her voice was so soft—so sweet—he almost melted just at the sound of it.
So she did feel it. She must of, hence her question. She was so familiar, it hurt to look at her. To gaze into those endless tender eyes…Those eyes—he knew those eyes…but from where? Link thought of the painting…the little girl sat in between King Rhoam and his Queen. Could this be her, but…grown up? Could this be the Princess?
No, He thought. She couldn’t be. This girl, that was staring upon him, she was dressed as a commoner. Cloaked in a Hylian Hood and was wearing normal Hylian clothes underneath. If this was the Princess of Hyrule, wouldn’t she be dressed as one? And what would she be doing with all of those books and diagrams? Link had heard many stories of the Princess, and most of which contained her attending to royal duties. Link had never heard of any talk of the Princess burying her nose in research or even remotely being known as a scholar.
Link then became very aware that she was waiting for him to answer. Goddess knows how long he’s just been sat there, gawking at her. He opened his mouth, words nervously stumbling out. “I…don’t think so…?”
She breathed again, the warmth sending a chill to course through his entire body. She wasn’t satisfied with his answer. “Your face,” She murmured. “It’s so familiar, are you sure?”
He wasn’t sure. He wasn’t sure at all. Because she was—so familiar—and it pained him that he couldn’t place why. Why did he know her? How did he know her? He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He seemed to have lost his voice. Just as he went to try again, she sighed and hastily grabbed the books and papers out of his hands (which he had completely forgotten he was still holding).
“Nevermind,” She breathed. She stood up, picking up the rest of the continents she had lost to the floor. Link rose to his feet as well, a little shocked at her sudden movement. She met his eyes once more before turning on her heel and whisking away, her words lingering in the air. “I’m sorry, again. I should have been paying attention. Forgive me.”
And then she was gone.
————
Link found his room not long after the mysterious girl dashed away, their brief and awkward encounter making his cheek red and his heart race. Thankfully, as he entered the bright and regal guest room, his bags were there, just like the King had promised. They were set up neatly in the corner, right next to a small balcony that lead outside. Long sheer curtains hung around the terrace doorway, the sleek material blowing in the open wind. It gave the room a chill, despite the warm colors of red and orange that made up the entirety of the space, and Link found that the cool air seemed to help the burning heat that was now spreading over more of his face.
He rummaged through his bags, searching for a clean pair of clothes and then began his way into the bathroom which was attached guest chambers. After the day he had, he needed a bath. He needed to soak and relax and just hope that the rest of his stay wouldn’t be as awkward and unnerving. As he laid in the heated water, steam filling up his nostrils and giving his complexion a watery glow, he found his mind wandering. And unfortunately (or fortunately..?) for him, it kept wandering back to the golden girl he’d met in the hallway.
Her lushness eyes kept appearing behind his own closed eyelids. The image of her hair, trailing down the side of her face, her cheeks and lips flushed pink—
And still—Link could place why she was so damn familiar.
It was pointless, trying to reconcile with the fact that there was something about her that unconsciously drew him in. Even though he had only been in her presence for less than five minutes, he couldn’t stop this feeling, and he couldn’t stop her from clouding his thoughts.
Link pulled his eyes open, the steam from the bath swirling around him. He wondered if he would see her again. If she would still be around the Castle…If she lived in the Castle. He wondered what she was doing hurrying down the hallways, or perhaps where she was headed. And he wondered why she held all of those ancient books and texts and what she could have possibly been doing with stuff like that. Was she was an adviser? A handmaiden? Or a servant or—
Knock, Knock.
A brief and sudden sound came at the door, causing Link to jump slightly. He pushed any other thoughts of this girl from his head as he hastily removed himself from the tepid bath water. While fetching his clothes, another knock came. This time louder, as if whoever was knocking was unsure if he had heard them the first time. Link managed to open the door just as he finished pulling a fresh tunic over his head.
He was met with a girl, hair the color of fire and eyes the color of leaves. She was a servant, he assumed. Given by the beige apron that was pulled around a brown shapeless dress. She had a bow tied in her hair, but that did little to nothing for the scarlet curls that sprang around her face.
“The King beckons you, sir Link. Supper is ready.” She spoke, her accent thick with the Capital’s tongue.
Sir Link….? He thought. I’m a ‘sir’ now?
“Thank you,” Link shifted awkwardly in the archway before shutting his chambers and quickly brushing over his appearance. He had pulled his hair back into the classic ponytail, and was now clothed with a fresh Hylian tunic. The colors of red and green complimented him nicely, accentuating his crystal eyes. He took a breath once more, mentally praying to Hylia that supper would be quick and uneventful, before grasping the golden metal handle and yanking open the heavy door.
The walk to the dining room was short. Passing back down the spiral stairs, and just a few hallways later he was there, standing in front of the large wooden entrance. He felt himself, more than once, begin to fidget with his hands. Twisting and turning his fingers as his palms turned sweaty. He thought of Mipha as he did this. He thought of the Village he had left behind, and how just two days ago, he would have never guessed he would be here: standing in the middle of Hyrule Castle, about to have supper with the King.
He bit the inside of his cheek, a nervous tick he pick up from his mother, before finally working up the courage to grace inside.
Link was immediately hit with the smell of honey-steamed meat, followed by a hint of perfectly baked bread and crisp apple pies. The aroma of the different foods flowed into his senses, making his stomach growl. He had forgotten exactly how hungry he was, until he walked into the cloud of delicious scents. The room itself was tremendous. The ceilings were high with great stone beams of support, casting from one side to another. Chandeliers made from pure iron hung delicately from above, while golden candles flickered around the rims. Banners with the Hyrule emblem dangled across the gray masonry walls, while streaks of the setting sun peered in through the windows.
He cautiously moved down the few stairs he was greeted with, until his feet hit the stone brick ground, covered with the scarlet royal carpet. A few heads of servants and maids turned his way, giving him a look of uncertainty. Link ignored them and pressed on further until he could see the King sat at the very back table, a cup of wine in his hand as he casually lifted to his lips.
The King noticed Link then, standing up and waved his hand. “Come, boy. Glad you could make it.”
As he moved closer to the table and chairs, Link noticed that the King was not alone. He was accompanied by a girl, no older than sixteen, with hair spun from gold and a smile like the sun.
Link froze.
It was the girl from the hallway.
Time seemed to slow down as the two of them met eyes, slowing realizing what they were seeing. The girl was dressed much different from when he had seen her earlier in the hallway. She wore a dress made of blue silk, which elegantly flowed over her body like a cascading river. Her hair was long, so long that Link could swear it was touching the ground, and it was pinned back slightly behind her pointed ears, allowing her forest eyes to be free from obstruction.
But the thing that was most noticeable about this girl, was the golden plated band that wrapped around her head, giving her a look of royalty.
“Zelda, this is Aiden’s son, Link. And Link, this is my daughter, Zelda. Princess of Hyrule.” King Rhoam spoke but Link was barely listening as his thoughts were louder and overbearing.
Princess.
She was….the Princess.
The mysterious girl, who had clouded Link’s brain for the entire evening and who had bumped into him in the hallway—and was inches from his face—was Princess Zelda….
Link felt like he couldn’t breath. How could she be the Princess??? She was dressed as a commoner earlier and she had been wearing a Hylian Hood, as if she were hiding from someone? Why was she in disguise? What was she doing with all of those books and diagrams? Where was she running too? Why was she running?
Eons and eons of questions rattled his brain as Link slowly forgot that he was in public and was still staring directly at the Princess. The sound of her standing up and out of her dining chair seemed to jolt him back to reality, but her voice is what really captured his attention.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Her voice was soft and sweet and oh so delectable. It suddenly brought him back to the hallway, where her face was inches from his and he could smell her hair and feel her breath every time she spoke—
Goddess, Link thought. What the hell is wrong with me?
Forcing his mind to stop running, he managed to open his mouth and let a few messy words stumble out. “Same to you, Princess.” He bowed his head as the King watched his mannerisms.
Link gulped. This dinner is going to be much more awkward than he anticipated.
He was sure Hylia was playing some sick joke on him.
“Please, have a seat.” Rhoam motioned for him to sit in the chair across from Zelda. Link slowly obliged.
Servants then began to bring around dinner. Platters of all kinds of food, laid out on the table. Rhom began to help himself, while Zelda seemed distracted. Link (even though he was starving) only grabbed very little, as he didn’t want to look like a slob (or even worse, a glutton) in front of the royal family. They ate silently for several minutes until King Rhoam began a conversation.
“I’ve brought the two of you together tonight, as I would like you to get acquainted.” He said. Zelda met Link’s eyes, confusion blossoming on her face. Link could only assume, he looked much to the same.
“As you both know, the Calamity is rising.” The King continued. “The war will be upon us soon, and the two of you will be at the front lines—”
“Wait.” Zelda’s voice traveled across the table, immediately catching Link’s attention. “What do you mean the two of us? What does he have to do with the war to come?” Her words may have sounded gentle, but there was a hint of insolent buried deep within.
Rhoam looked sharply at his daughter, and she returned his glare with one of her own. Her eyes grew dark and suddenly her sweet and innocent look was gone and instead replaced with an arrogant looking one.
Link remained silent, as the two of them shared a conversation solely in glares. He started bouncing his leg, up and down, underneath the table as way to hopefully calm his rapid nerves. He had a horrible feeling this dinner was going to end disastrously.
And just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse, Rhoam spoke again, directing full attention to Link.
“He is Farore’s Champion. The Hero of Hyrule.”
Hero. The word echoed his his brain as Zelda’s bright green eyes widened. She parted her lips slightly and her expression softened. If Link had to guess, it almost appeared as if a look of worry began to cross her features.
He began to squirm under her scrutiny gaze, face heating up and his leg bouncing faster. Unconsciously he bit the inside of his cheek and wished that this damned dinner would just end already. As he worked up the courage to possible say something, anything to redirect the conversation elsewhere, she spoke and all of his words died in his throat.
“You’re the Hero of Legend?” Her voice seemed to tremble and before Link could even think about answering, she asked another question. A question he really wished she hadn’t. “Do you have the sword?”
The sword that seals the darkness.
The sword that only the chosen Hero could wield.
The sword that was hidden, deep within the Lost Woods, just waiting to be claimed—
The sword…that Link didn’t have…but was supposed too…
He wasn’t sure how long he was silent for, as his mind began to race once more. He was startled when his lips parted unconsciously, allowing words to seep through.
“No.” Link said, so quiet—he was sure that neither the Princess or The King had heard him. “Not yet.”
The look he was given by Princess Zelda herself, was one of the coldest and condescending looks he had ever been given in his entire life.
“How can you be the Hero of Legend if you don’t even have the sword?” Her voice was like ice, slicing his skin and piercing his soul, causing his breathing to suddenly stop. She sounded so different then the sweet girl he had met in the hallway, Link was convinced that the Princess had switched places with some sort of evil twin of hers.
“He may not have it yet, but he will.” King Rhoam spoke for Link, but Zelda’s glare did not falter. She held it sternly even has her father continued. “He starts training tomorrow, and once he’s strong enough, he will set out to the Lost Woods to obtain it.”
The Princess was quick to answer, her tongue still harsh. “And what if he doesn’t return? Or even worse, what if he does, but he’s empty handed? Will he still be the Hero of Hyrule then?”
The King’s face began to redden, obviously becoming angry at his Daughter’s sharp words. He opened his mouth to rebut her argument, but Link spoke instead. The tones of his voice were low but stern, and for a moment, Link wasn’t even sure if it was he who was speaking.
“I won’t fail.”
The words were simple, but the meaning behind them was solid. Link didn’t know what overcame him, but suddenly he didn’t feel like himself. He felt confident, he felt strong, he felt—
Courageous.
Zelda, taken back by his sudden boldness, looked at him incredulously. She leaned into her chair, emerald eyes never leaving his sapphire’s. They sat like that for several heartbeats, and somewhere along the line, Link stopped biting his cheek and bouncing his leg. He was completely calm, completely content—completely fearless.
It was odd, this feeling.
It was something he hadn’t felt in all of seven years.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity of stares, Zelda narrowed her eyes and broke the tension, speaking with words as cold as the Mountains in Hebra.
“I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.”

LKI: Chapter 1
                                                     ~~~I~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Warnings: None
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a warm, Spring night in Utemelac Prison; however, one cell always managed to stay ice cold.
“What the hell have we told you about using magic, Witch?!” an armored male exclaimed as he struggled to open the door frozen shut.
“Kiss my ass, Warden!” barked a ravenette as her unique eyes were locked onto the book in her lap.
“This is why you’re always in solitary, dammit!” the male exclaimed as the door finally gave way and opened.
“And the way you run your mouth is why you’re still single,” replied the teen who sat on her cot perfectly comfortable in the below freezing temperature.
“Your sister is here to visit you,” muttered the male earning an immediate glare from the female.
“My sisters are locked up here with me,” she growled as she snapped the book shut and placed it under her pillow, “What do you mean?”
“You know what I mean,” the male sighed as he stepped aside to expose the open door, “Come on, Rhamina.”
The shackles around her wrists and ankles rattled as she followed the male down the hallways lit only by the torches on the walls to a room where a gold-clad female sat.
“Rhamina!” the female knight said in happiness as she stood and hugged her almost mirror image.
Both females had tan skin and jet black hair; however, the knight’s was cut extremely short, like a male’s and Rhamina’s hair was long and silky just reaching her upper thighs.
The most iconic parts of each female however, were their eyes. Rhamina’s were brown while the other’s were red but they both shared the gold flecks that seemed to float in their irises.
“Why are you here, Marina?” the prisoner asked in a low tone keeping her arms to her sides, “Better question, why do you keep coming here, Marina?”
“Oh, silly, I came to wish you a happy birthday because I won’t be able to come here tomorrow,” the knight said backing off of her hug, “And I keep coming because I want to make it up to you.”
“For the past near seventeen years I’ve been alive here’s the one thing I’ve learned the hard way,” Rhamina said with a sneer, “Never forgive, never forget. Otherwise you’ll be a tool for the rest of your existence. I will no longer be that way and there is no way you will be forgiven.”
“We really are too similar, Rhamina,” Marina chuckled pitifully as her eyes began to water, “I know that lesson, we learned the first half together you know? I’m fighting a war right now.”
“An unnecessary war,” the younger twin spat, “You’re killing innocent people just so this kingdom can gain more territory to control when the people who live here currently suffer enough.”
“This war has been going on for two years already. One year before we were caught and continuing on through this day,” she continued, “The more money spent on it, the higher the taxes will be. Already most of the people cannot pay them and the more the people on the streets will suffer, the number of those on the streets will increase. And from what I’ve noticed we’re lucky to end up here because we get better housing and more food than the citizens currently. Do you know how fucked up that is? Why exactly did this war start again? Was this kingdom defending or was this kingdom trying to consume more land?”
It went silent after that until the warden returned and said, “It’s lights out, the witch has to return to her cell.”
“Good night, Rhamina, I love you,” Marina said as she stood giving the ravenette another hug.
“Don’t waste those three precious words when you don’t mean them,” the sixteen-year-old hissed as she ripped away and followed the warden back to her cell.
“Why must your words be daggers towards Lady Miyu?” the warden asked without looking back at the ravenette, “she did save your life.”
“And she was the one who endangered it. Not only mine but also the lives of my sisters. Let my words be daggers and may the wounds I inflict never heal.”
The next morning Rhamina was awoken by the sound of her cell lock turning.
“Morning, Witch,” one of the younger guard greeted, “Time for breakfast.”
“Morning, Cuntface,” the ravenette yawned causing the male to sigh, both parties already used to her disrespect to the authorities.
“Heard it’s your birthday, today,” the male said trying to dissipate the silence as he walked her to the cafeteria.
“Awe, how sweet you remembered it’s been one year since I was put in this hell hole,” the ravenette replied while rubbing sleep out of her eyes.
“It’s pretty sad you know?” she asked upon reaching the door, “If we had met in the village we probably would’ve been good friends but can’t change the past.”
Before the guard could reply the teen disappeared in the large room and lined up to get her food.
“Mina!” called a shorter female dashing to stand right next to the ravenette.
“Hello, Chloe,” she greeted grabbing a tray and handing it to her.
“You got put in solitary again.”
“Yep,” Rhamina replied as food got put onto her tray.
“Mina, that’s not good,” the fourteen-year-old said.
“Bitch, deserved it,” the ravenette said nonchalantly with a shrug as she took her tray to the usual table her sisters sat at.
“Mina, you yeeted a guard over the wall during morning time. Hoot!” Chloe said dashing to keep up with the ravenette.
“He was talking shit on a kid who did nothing,” Rhamina scoffed taking her seat to be bombarded by affection from three of the females already there.
“Happy birthday, Bitch!” Kerstin exclaimed as she, Sam, and Tijarah began to smother the now seventeen-year-old.
“Awe, Mina-chan is old now!” Tijarah chirped at the struggling ravenette.
“Fuck off and let me eat dammit!”
“Awe, Mina, you’re such a floof,” Sam cooed completely ignoring the female who just wanted her food.
After a few minutes the other girls sat down as Rhamina glared at them before taking bites of her food.
“Happy Birthday, Mina,” Sophie greeted as she passed a large parcel underneath the table before whispering, “It’s from me, Hannah, and Jaylin.”
“Awe, you guys are too nice,” Rhamina replied managing to secure it in the waistband of her pants, “Also I’m pretty sure I just got more days on solitary.”
“What? How?” Hannah asked.
“You know how it got pretty hot last night?” Rhamina started, “Well, I made it not hot in my cell.”
“God dammit, Mina, we were planning on spending your birthday together!” Sam chuckled.
“Seven Witches of Utemelac, you are summoned by the royal family get your shit!” one of the guard exclaimed.
“The fuck?” each of the girls asked in unison but got their asses up anyway the only one in shackles being the ravenette.
They were led by a large group of royal guards to a carriage which they somehow crammed into to fit.
Chloe was on the floor clinging onto the ravenette’s leg by herself as Rhamina took out the parcel from her waistband.
She then proceeded to unwrap the brown paper and twine that held it closed and smiled at the familiar black book in her hands.
“How were you guys able to get this?” Rhamina asked as she opened it to reveal a deck of oracle cards in the hollowed out portion of the the book.
“Jaelin was able to go to your old house and get it,” Hannah explained as the ravenette could still feel the energy running through the cards.
“Thanks guys,”Rhamina smile while reaching over to give the pair hugs, “But I really wonder why we were called up by the royal family.”
“How much you want to bet it has something to do with Marina?” Tijarah spoke as she looked out the small window attached to the door on her side.
“Wouldn’t be surprised I mean that bitch has been trying to have a solid conversation with Mina for a while,” Sam added, “Even though she is the reason why we got caught anyway.”
“Fucking screw this kingdom, my dudes,” Rhamina sighed as she put the cards back into the book, “They’re so close-minded it hurts.”
It took about half an hour to reach the castle from the prison despite it still being in the capital city.
When the girls arrived they were led into the castle by the guards and on the way they earned stares from the staff and any nobles who were by chance there.
Quickly getting irritated at all the eyes on her Rhamina hissed at her audience who immediately turned away or left the room which earned loud laughs from all of the females.
“Hush up, Witches,” hissed one of the males.
“Eat a dick you know it was funny,” Rhamina replied with a smirk earning a glare.
“Aw, what are you going to do? Kill me? Go ahead but there’s no guarantee I won’t haunt you,” she pushed as they neared the throne room.
“Mina, calm down we don’t want to mess around here,” Hannah warned earning the sad fish face.
As the doors opened the male announced, “Your Highness, the Seven Witches.”
“Thank you, now leave us please,” the king requested as the two ravenettes locked eyes from across the room.
As soon as the door closed Marina stood up and greeted, “Happy birthday, Sister.”
“It was,” Rhamina stated as she and the others walked closer to the throne, “Until I saw you again.”
“Come now don’t be like that,” the King laughed, “I have a proposition for you girls.”
“Mhm, and what would that be?” Tijarah scoffed as Kerstin and Sam not so discreetly kicked her in the shins.
“I’m sure you’ve heard of Ibadora, yes?”
“Yeah,” Sam interjected in a judgemental manner while rolling her eyes, “It doesn’t fucking exist.”
“Funny you should say that am I right, Kitsami Verum Princeps Ibadora?”
Rhamina’s head snapped up at the mention of the name she had not heard since her childhood.
“What other secrets have you exposed now, you idiot?!” she barked at her golden-clad reflection.
“Rhamina, please just listen,” the older twin pleaded noticing the ravenette’s locks slowly start to float in the areas surrounding her body and the temperature drop.
“My proposition is that if you lead us to Ibadora then you will be pardoned of your crime,” the King spoke earning an immediate response.
“Absolutely not,” Rhamina snapped earning a gasp from Marina.
“Excuse me?” the King asked glaring down at the seven teenagers before him.
“Why should she let you have access to Ibadora when you’re such a shitty ruler to your own people?” Sam questioned earning glares from Hannah and Sophie despite the fact they agreed.
“Knowing you, you’d use its resources for another pointless war,” Tijarah added.
“That’s enough!” the King boomed as he rose violently from his throne, “I tried to be reasonable and let you choose correctly on your own; however, it seems that will not be happening.”
“Damn right.”
“Guards!” called the King as armored males entered, “Store them in the dungeons until their voyage tomorrow morning.”
As soon as a hand touched her shoulder Rhamina grabbed the male by the arm and threw him directly at the king.
“Yeet!”
“Y’all bett keep praying to that god of yours because you do not want to see me in hell,” she growled as the male hit a magic barrier set up by Marina.
The clang echoed throughout the dungeons as the cell door was slammed shut.
“You better not freeze the entire fucking cell, Mina,” Sam warned to the girl who had already gathered herself in a back corner under the barred window.
“No promises,” she snickered, “it is pretty hot down here.”
The rest of the girls groaned as the ravenette cackled like the witch she was.
“Can you shut the fuck up?!” one of the other criminals barked from across the hallway.
“You shut the fuck up, Faggot!” Kerstin replied as she through a rock blindly through the cell bars.
Thud! “Ow!”
“Holy shit, I actually hit him!”
That night an advisor to the King went down into the dungeons to speak with the witches.
“For the last time I couldn’t lead anyone to Ibadora even if I wanted to,” hissed the irritated Rhamina.
“And why is that?”
‘Mother fucker I should cut off your fucking dick-’ “Because I don’t have my notes or my relic,” she seethed, “I had to hide them before we were arrested.”
“Then we’ll just have to retrieve them,” the male stated as if nothing were wrong.
‘Bitch.’
“Sounds easy but I for-fucking-got where I hid them,” the ravenette voice with a smirk.
“Both of us know that’s a lie, you’d have to be stupid to forget something like that,” the male sighed, “Now where is it?”
“Fuck you that’s where.”
“…”
“...”
“They aren’t being touched by anyone but me,” Rhamina finally said after the male looked at her like an she was an idiot.
“Fair enough,” he shrugged, “Guard, unlock the door.”
Once the cell door opened Rhamina stepped over her sleeping companions and followed the advisor up the stairs.
“So where exactly did you hide them?” he asked as had a carriage prepared.
“The forest.”
“How cliche.”
“What did you expect?” Rhamina scoffed, “I had a limited amount of time and nowhere else to hide it.”
The trip was silent for the most part with the teen looking out the window at the moon.
Upon arriving to the forest the female led to the advisor and the guard deeper and deeper into the forest until he asked, “Are you sure you know where you’re going?”
“Yes, now shut the fuck up we’re almost there.”
After a few more minutes they came upon a clearing with a large lake in the middle.
“How is this here?” the advisor gasped as he and the guard gaped at the landmark not yet recorded on their maps.
“She only lets those she deems worthy in,” the ravenette said before turning to the large body of water, “Come now, friend, return what I desire.”
Suddenly a woman rose from the center of the water.
She had fair skin, long wavy blue hair, and a flowing white dress.
As they floated across the water towards the ravenette a metal box could be seen in her hands.
Once she left the container in Rhamina’s hands her eyes drifted towards the two males and she gave a sneer before her body turned into water before dropping back into the lake.
Slowly the lake and clearing began to fade back into an endless sea of trees.
“What was-” “I told you already, the Lady of the Lake only lets in those she sees worthy.”
The ride was back was very similar to the one they had taken there the only difference being Rhamina stared down at the box in her hands instead of the moon.
“Alright back in you go,” the guard said opening the cell door for the ravenette.
As she walked back into the cell the male felt the temperature drop a few degrees; however, he missed the smirk on her face while she gripped onto the metal box.
The next morning the girls were awoken by water being poured on them.
“Get up, Witches, you need to get prepped then you’re off,” one of the guards growled.
“Lick my ass,” Rhamina groggily hissed as she began to ring out her hair.
As she stood up she took the metal box into her hands earning the gazes from her sisters.
“You’re actually going to show them?” Sophie whispered recognizing the box from the year prior.
“We’re going to have to see if I can even find it myself,” the ravenette chuckled as the girls were led to a separate wing of the actual castle.
Their confusion only rose when they entered a luxurious bathroom and turned to the guards with raised brows and even more when he unlocked the shackles on Rhamina’s wrists and ankles.
“Clean yourselves up, you’re having breakfast with the Royal Family,” the male explained as he walked out the door, “clothes will be delivered by maids in fifteen minutes.”
It was silent for a few moments as Rhamina looked at the dark marks left on her wrists from trying to escape them so many times.
There would be definite scarring but she couldn’t help but feel at least a bit more free than she had been.
“I call the bath first losers!” Rhamina cheered as she raced towards the marble tub and began to run the water.
As she began to prep a hair mask for herself made from egg, honey, and olive oil the other girls began to start their own cleansing routines.
While the water was warming up Rhamina let her hair absorb the vitamins and proteins soak into her dirty and greasy locks. She had kept it as soft as she could in prison but felt so happy upon being able to return to her usual hair routine prior to getting arrested.
Of course as she ran her hands through the soaked locks she casted small glamours to keep her hair softer and luxurious as it always was.
After about ten minutes she rinsed her hair in the shower area and sank into the now filled tub to shampoo and condition her hair before she let herself completely relax into the warm water.
Her wrists and ankles stung but she could slowly feel the water caress her wounds as if welcoming back a lover, slowly relieving them of their pain.
Five minutes later a few maids came in to leave clothes for the girls which were all black tank tops, black pants, and black boots with golden chains to accent the boots and act as a belt.
“I bet, Mina, is loving the outfit choices right now,” Sam teased as the female was drying herself off.
“True, but I would love them more if those chains were only a fashion statement and didn’t mark us as prisoners,” she replied summoning small gusts of wind to dry her hair.
After everyone got dressed Rhamina took the box in her hands and the others gathered near her.
“Did you already open it?” Kerstin asked looking down at past memories.
“Only to put the cards in it, I haven’t looked at anything else.”
“Well, no time better to look since we’re going to need that shit,” Tijarah said placing a hand on Rhamina’s shoulder.
“You right,” she chuckled placing her right hand over it.
Her hair began to float again as a soft blue light came from under the girl’s hand and the others could feel magic slowly start to fill the room.
When the light died down Rhamina’s hair stopped floating and she moved her hand away and the lid of the box flipped open.
On the top was the book containing oracle cards which Rhamina moved to give view to a red, hardcover book and a necklace with a large, tear drop shaped, aqua colored crystal with a sigil engraved into it strung onto a golden chain.
“Still the same as we left them,” Rhamina smiled as she put on the necklace feeling a new surge of energy flow through her before looking through the pages of the book to see the language only she and her twin could read.
“Lucky the ink didn’t run,” she chuckled before snapping the book shut, “We should get going now.
As soon as the girls exited the bathroom the guard led them to the dining room where they were met with the King, Queen, the three princesses, and Marina already seated at the table.
Around Marina’s neck Rhamina noticed the glint of a red crystal with etchings in it.
“Good to know you didn’t lose it,” Marina smiled cheerily earning a glare from her sister.
“I should be saying that to you considering the fact you easily lost my trust,” Rhamina replied while crossing her arms.
Marina looked sadly at her younger sister eyes widening when she saw the dark marks around her wrists but before she could say anything the Queen said, “Sit please.”
The girls obeyed takings seats as far away from the individuals dressed in bolder colors.
“Might I ask why we are having breakfast with you if we were basically treated like pigs last night?” Rhamina asked as food was placed in front of everyone.
“Well, we wanted to apologize for what happened to you last night,” the Queen spoke, “It was not just for you to be treated that way when you’re helping us with an expedition this large.”
“Really?” Tijarah and Sam asked with cocked brows.
“That is complete and utter bullshit,” Kerstin stated with a growl as the princesses stood up with glares.
“How dare you speak that way to us!” the youngest exclaimed as she slammed her hands down on the table.
“Do you know who you are addressing?!” the middle added only to gasp in horror as she met glowing gold irises.
“I hate when people try to apologize without meaning it,” Rhamina stated with her arms crossed and hair floating as the temperature dropped, “It’s a blatant lie and if there’s one thing we learned in prison it’s how to pick out lies from the truth.”
“You just want to get on our good sides so we don’t sabotage this mission of yours right?” she continued as the royals and Marina looked to the group in front of them with fearful expressions.
Their combined auras melding together with rage, hate, sadness, and betrayal dying the room dark.
“As much as I would love to we wouldn’t dream of it because the whole reason I taught them how to find their magic was to go on a huge adventure together and what bigger adventure is there than finding a lost kingdom?” the ravenette chirped as the room returned to normal and her hair returned to its original position.
With the aura gone the seven females began to eat the luxurious meals in front of them as the others could only watch them in shock of what just happened.
“What’s wrong, Marina?” Rhamina asked eating slower than the other girls, “You’re coming on this expedition too, you should eat for who knows how long it will be before you can get a meal like this again.”
“Holy shit this is so good!” Cough! Cough! Choke! Cough!
“Fucking idiot,” Sam, Rhamina, and Tijarah muttered as Kerstin ate her food then proceeded to choke on it.
About and hour later the girls were led by Marina and the guards to a large ship where they would be for the next few months accompanied by its sister vessel.
“So we know the kingdom was somewhere in the Donnaholm Ocean but we don’t know exactly where,” Marina explained showing the other ravenette a world map.
“That’s true but you didn’t expect a straight shot right?” Rhamina asked looking up at her sister with a raised brow.
“What do you mean?”
“Do you still have your book?” Rhamina asked causing the knight to give her a black book written in the same language as the red book.
Turning to about the fifth page Rhamina read skimmed it before reading out loud, “Eht tsrif tsaeb seil nihtiw eht sretaw fo eci.”
“The first beast lies within the waters of ice,” Marina translated with a confused expression.
“Yes, in order to open the gates of Ibadora we have to fight seven beasts first or did you forget that?” Rhamina spoke clapping the book shut, “Are these ships capable of handling that?”
Rhamina sighed at her sibling’s silence and explained, “The first beast should be somewhere in the Cold Bay.”
“That area is riddled with pirates!”
“You want to find Ibadora don’t you?” Rhamina glowered, “Then suck it up.”
“Mina!” called Chloe from the door.
“What is it, Owl?”
“Are we allowed to use magic?”
“Yes, why?” Marina asked as the ravenette with hair down to her butt narrowed her eyes.
“What the fuck did you retards do?” Rhamina growled.
“It wasn’t me!” Chloe squeaked, “This time..”
“What even happened?” the knight asked hearing crashes and screams from just outside the room they were in.
The three walked out to see a very wet black cat attempting to jump onto either Kerstin or Sam to claw their eyes out.
“Tijarah, calm down!” Sophie called as she and Hannah were trying to pick her up.
“Hell no!” the cat exclaimed, “They fucking dumped water on me with magic!”
“Jesus christ,” Rhamina muttered with a face palm before she stomped her right foot causing four walls of ice to surround the cat and one right in front of Kerstin and Sam so they ran into it, “What the hell did you fucks already do? It’s literally been ten minutes since you could legally use your magic.”
“They fucking dumped water on me!” the cat hissed with its fur raising.
“Why the fuck are you a cat anyway, Tijarah?” Sam retorted rubbing her nose, “I thought you hated cats.”
“I do but the mother fuckers are agile as fuck!” Tijarah cat hissed just before Rhamina picked her up out of the ice box and scratched behind her ears earning a pur.
“Guys, act fucking responsible with your magic,” Rhamina scolded, “And if you were going to get her wet you should have used magic to throw her into the ocean.”
“Mina!” Sophie gasped.
“You know it would’ve been ten times as funny as just dumping water on her.”
“Mina, you traitor!” yowled the cat right before the ravenette used her magic to summon a warm breeze to dry off the feline.
“Okay turn back now,” Rhamina said.
“No. I like being carried.”
Thud “Ow!”
“Looks like not all cats land on their feet,” Rhamina commented as everyone else burst into laughter.
“Hannah!” a male voice called to the red head.
“Jaelin!” she cheered running over to the shorter blonde knight who she started dating in the year they were in prison.
“I didn’t know you were allowed to be on this ship for royal expeditions,” Sophie stated as they were kissing.
“I got permission from Marina,” the blonde answered as he plus the seven girls gave her a pointed look.
“I thought it would make you all feel more comfortable if you had someone familiar to you,” she smiled but Rhamina could tell it was fake.
They were too similar. They knew almost everything about each other and could almost always tell when the other was lying.
‘She is such a two-faced bitch,’ she thought as the glared harder at her twin, ‘So am I but she actually betrayed us. She will never be forgiven. Never.’
r/hockey NHL Power Rankings Week 3: Feeling Blue Edition
/r/Hockey NHL Power Rankings Week Oct 14, 2019 - Oct 20, 2019Thank YouThank you to all of the volunteers doing the power rankings. Each ranker has their own system and have their own reasonings and analyis. It truly is a lot of work.RankersSpoilerOrganizersSpoilerVisualizationThe visualization contains historical data, so you can see how your team has done over time. Hopefully, we can run this for many years in hopes that we can see the rise and fall of teams by /r/hockey opinion.It automatically updates so feel free to bookmark. You can find it hereProcessHow does this work? Throughout the course of the week rankers are able to access an app that will allow them to rank teams. At the end of the period we calculate the average ranking for every team and collate all of the analysis provided by rankers.The app then generates a post that is first proofread and then posted to /r/hockey!Rankings (28/31 Rankers Reporting)Ranking (avg)TeamDeltaOverall RecordRecord This WeekComments1 (1.52)Colorado Avalanche-7-0-13-0-1Avs are strange they are winning, but at the same time they are very sloppy with many issues. The giveaways are sometimes out of control and the defense is often scattered. The Power Play is bad right now very stationary missing Barrie hurts. The first line looks normal which is unusual for a line that is typically so dominant. On the positive this team is a collective unit and its depth is showing up. The stars are flashing at different times and different lines are breaking through each night. Whether Kadri, Burakovsky, or Jost players are replacing the top lines dominance. The top line is still a sleeping giant and I worry for the rest of the league when it wakes up. Calder update: not a great week for Makar which is saying something still multiple assists on the week and 7 points in 8 games so far.2 (3.86)Edmonton Oilers37-1-12-1-13 (4.07)Buffalo Sabres27-1-13-1-0Its obvious that the west coast style of hockey was a shock to us, but we still managed to pull off 4/6 points for the trip. Victor Olofsson has cooled off a bit along with the powerplay, but our 5 on 5 play has been exceptional to compensate. Rasmus Dahlin is now second on the team in scoring to Eichel and second in PIMs to Kyle Okposo, who along with the Roaring 20's line has looked fantastic. We can't continue this pace forever, but I can dream right?4 (5.07)Boston Bruins-25-1-21-0-2The Bruins started off strong this week with a big win against the Ducks and Pasta scoring 4 goals! The rest of week had middling results with a shootout loss to the Bolts and an OTL to the Leafs. The Bruins still struggle to score 5v5 against the Bolts with all 3 goals coming on the PP. More secondary scoring is starting to show up on the scoresheet which helps but not at the level the team would like. The Bruins need more than the first line putting up points.5 (6.41)Carolina Hurricanes-36-3-01-2-06 (6.69)Vegas Golden Knights-6-3-02-1-0The Golden Knights are boasting one of the league's best special teams. Cody Glass's addition on the top unit has added an extra dimension to it allowing them to score on 30% of their power play chances. The penalty kill has only allowed two goals while scoring 4 short handed. Marc-Andre Fleury has been lights out lately playing like a Vezina candidate. But you have to ask the question if the Golden Knights are playing Fleury too much having him play all but one period in the season.7 (7.79)Anaheim Ducks36-3-02-2-0Ducks are living on the edge. Finishing problems have not been solved but Rakell looks night and day better than last season. Current team mood(not including Calgary): https://ift.tt/33urMd4 With wins over Buffalo and Carolina, the ducks look to shock teams thinking they can pull 4 points from a socal swing. Also does anyone have a power play goal for sale?8 (7.83)Washington Capitals-6-2-23-1-0Holtby has been much improved these last couple of games. Which is great news for Caps fans and bad news for everyone else. I think he may have realized his payday is coming up and he needs to get his numbers back to 2016-17 year. Although I would be okay with him repeating his playoff numbers from 17-18.9 (8.66)Pittsburgh Penguins56-3-02-1-0Despite having the most extensive injury list to start the season the boys are still playing at an elite level and winning games against tough opponents. Even in a loss against Vegas that game was kept close until very late but the Flower is going to do what he does best.10 (9.03)Toronto Maple Leafs-15-3-12-1-011 (12.21)Tampa Bay Lightning-4-3-12-1-0I really don't know what to make of this team yet. D has looked solid, and the PK hasn't been terrible (just need to win more faceoffs). The offense seemed to pick it up a little more, generating 46 shots against Colorado. The powerplay however, has looked awful, dropping from 28% last season to 16% this season.12 (13.86)Nashville Predators-4-3-11-1-1Well, the good news is the Preds found their missing PP. The bad news is now we need to start putting up flyers for their PK.13 (15.03)New York Islanders75-3-03-0-0Isles look to be getting into a groove now. Goaltending is solid and Mat Barzal is showing off his scoring while Nelson follows his regular Brocktober schedule. Wahlstrom being called up is very exciting with him showing some great skills, despite not getting his first goal yet. Next week's roster moves will be interesting, with Eberle hopefully returning to health and Dobson riding watching from upstairs lats couple of games.14 (15.03)Montreal Canadiens44-3-22-2-015 (15.21)St. Louis Blues-83-2-30-1-2This team is still hungover. Good play from some players but not really cohesive yet. Still early in the season though.16 (15.59)Calgary Flames-5-4-13-1-0A 3-1 week was the bounce back that the Flames needed, however an abysmal effort leading to a 4-1 loss against LA leaves fans wondering what kind of team the Flames are this year.17 (15.83)Arizona Coyotes54-2-13-0-0While the Coyotes have had one of the top D-groups in the league since last season, offense has finally started clicking for the Desert Dogs. The Coyotes have taken 9 of the last 10 available points, scoring 4.6 gpg over the previous week, and only allowing 2 gpg. The PP has heated up to over 30% in this time frame, and Darcy Kuemper set a franchise record for most consecutive games allowing 2 of fewer goals. Kuemper has not allowed more than 2 goals against now since March.18 (16.1)Vancouver Canucks55-3-03-1-0I suppose I should say something I'm thankful for this year, but as a true Canucks fan I'd rather just be an entitled little egg eater and not give thanks for anything. This team is pretty good, but what I really deserve this year is a Stanley Cup win, or maybe the first overall draft pick if we miss the playoffs. Ideally, the Canucks will win both, otherwise it's time to #firebenning. Anyway, The Canucks turned around their early season slide with a very convincing win at home vs. the Kings and a less-convincing shootout win vs. the Flyers. The top line continues to be somewhat stifled, but that's okay because there are now various interesting players to watch on this team. Miller and Hughes have both come exactly as-advertised, Markstorm is tight, and Pearson appears intent on revitalizing his career. Myers is big, and while I don't know how his play will end up on statlines, he is very fun to watch.19 (17)Winnipeg Jets-65-5-01-2-0Tough, week was tough. Last week saw us win 3 in a row, this week saw us lose 3 in a row. The truth is we're probably somewhere in the middle of that. No one is doubting this teams offensive depth or skill level, The defense continues to leave much to be desired. Rumblings of Buff's return continue to give us this false sense of hope about the season. The tenders have been decent, through this tough stretch. Not alot to say at this point. The forward core is good enough to score on anyone, but if they run into a hot goalie, like they did vs the Isles they are going to lose. Frustration isn't the correct word, I'd say it's more of a malais. Also, they failed to sell out a game for the first time in 2.0 history, I understand it was vs the Gila River Coyotes on a Tuesday while there was snow on the ground on October 15th, but still, not a great sign.20 (20.34)Florida Panthers13-2-32-0-1Can the Panthers end a game in regulation? Can the Panthers hold on to a lead? No and no. But they managed to win against Nashville without Barkov, pretty good.21 (21.79)Columbus Blue Jackets33-3-21-0-2Three solid performances this week, but both overtime losses were games that were very winnable. Poor power play performance continues to plague the Jackets and this year the penalty kill seems to be having issues too. Cam Atkinson is on the right wing side on the PP and it doesn't seem to be working. Outside of special teams, though, the young Jackets team has looked pretty good at driving the game though puck possession. There were multiple shifts vs Chicago that were a minute plus of sustained pressure and chances in 5 on 5 situations. Only issue here is burying chances which should eventually happen if this play keeps up. Two tough opponents this week should be a good test. Expect to see Elvis get his first win soon!22 (22.86)Philadelphia Flyers-52-3-10-3-0Thanks to the backup ranker, I'm a student who is working as well so sometimes time escapes me. Thanks again for covering last week. That being said, the flyers made me sad and I want them to not suck. Oilers hurt our Goodboye(tm) Hart, we lost to the flames who I feel we should have at least been able to take to overtime, and I dont want to talk about the stars game. Lets just hope that we do that hockey thing better this week.23 (23.48)New York Rangers-82-4-00-3-0This team's starting to look a little more as I expected. Actually a little worse than I figured. It may have been due to the schedule, but holy shit was this a painful week. There were only about 20 minutes of hockey that I was hyped about this week and that was the third period against the Canucks. Defense needs to be addressed and the forward lines need to be sorted out. Andersson still deserves more minutes and Kakko should get time with the first line and possibly even the first power play unit. Hopefully this upcoming week gets better.24 (23.52)San Jose Sharks33-5-01-1-0Much better week for the Sharks. The rookies are starting to look more comfortable, and everything is starting to fall into place. The team is starting to regain confidence and everyone's playing much better than the first week.25 (23.62)Chicago Blackhawks32-3-12-1-0Kirby Dach made his NHL debut last night. The 3rd line of Saad-Kampf-Kubalik has been the most consistent, and arguably our best line so far. They have a 60.75 CF% and 67.90 FF% at even strength, and the team has a 46.54 CF% and 42.91 FF% when none of them are on the ice. The Hawks are a much more physical team, averaging 31.3 hits/game, up from 16.5 last season. But are hurt by poor special teams: they are 3 for 18 on the PP (16.7%) and 12 for 18 on the PK (66.7%).26 (23.79)Los Angeles Kings-13-5-01-2-0no bueno for the kings this week, Drew Doughty may have exerted dominance in his love-hate relationship with Matthew Tchakuk. along with a flying Mark Giordano superman appearance. The Kings look poised for mediocrity or worse again.27 (23.86)Detroit Red Wings-83-5-00-3-0We expected regression to hit at some point, things took a turn for the worse as they went 0-3 getting killed by VAN/CGY. The “veterans” seem to be hindering development. Dropping Bertuzzi from the top line to create “balanced” scoring was unnecessary by Blashill as no increased production came from Athanasiou along with decreases in Larkin/Mantha hot start. Most teams in the league load up a top line(COL/BOS) or have players to spread out(VGK/STL). Detroit is definitely not the latter and having Darren Helm on the top line kill many opportunities for Larkin/Mantha. Defense is still lackluster outside of Hronek and the Goaltending is still hard to evaluate since the defense is playing so poor. However I still maintain that Howard and Bernier do well enough to keep the WIngs in games. Their loss against EDM was a good step forward as Bertuzzi rejoined the top line near the end of the game and they were able to keep the EDM studs from running up the score.28 (27.59)New Jersey Devils22-4-22-1-0WE DID THE THING! It may have taken us longer than everyone else but we did it and against the Rags, making it all the sweeter. Predictably, the rampant calling for Hynes' head in the sub and GDTs have largely subsided, though he is still very much on the hot seat. Hughes got his first goal of hopefully many against his brother's team, and it ended up being the GW and only goal. The team as a whole seems much more cohesive and the pieces are starting to fall into place. And in possibly the best news of the week, we signed Nico long term, 7 years 7.25 AAV with a MNTC. Having Nico signed until 2027 is a relief knowing exactly how much a high talent player will be making before the offseason hits.29 (28.24)Dallas Stars-32-7-11-3-0If you're panicking this week, I don't blame you. I am, too. Things went almost as bad as they could have. The negatives are many. We're all aware of them, so let's try to be optimistic. What went right this week? Hintz and Heiskanen continue to deliver. Bishop showed he can still stand on his head for a win. Perry and Gurianov look promising. Can we take our successes against Philly and triumph against the Senators tonight? Can we use this win to build momentum and get key players back to playing elite hockey? Lets hope... otherwise, it's going to get messy, and you'd have to imagine that drastic changes are on the table.30 (29.97)Ottawa Senators-11-5-10-2-1An incredibly boring loss against the Minnesota Mild this week pointed the Sens' tank back in the right direction this week. Despite an incredible performance from Nilsson in Las Vegas and finally recording a goal on the powerplay, the team managed no wins and only a single point over the course of this week - exactly the kind of performance they want to continue if they wish to remain at 31st in the standings for the best possible shot at 1st overall pick in the 2020 draft. The only concerning part about this week is in Chabot, Tkachuk, White, and Zaitsev all clearly looking frustrated by the team's struggles; It will be a test of new coach DJ Smith and the "veteran presence" guys that Dorion brought in to keep locker room morale up in this tough rebuild year.31 (30.14)Minnesota Wild-2-6-02-2-0This blurb requires more effort than the Minnesota Wild have shown so far this season. Were it not for a dumpster fire of a matinee game against Ottawa, Minny would still be looking for their first win of the season going into Sunday's tilt against Montreal. 8 games in and Brad Hunt is the leading the team in points. Seems pretty fitting as the rest of the team is playing like total Hunts (unfortunate that one important key on my keyboard is broken). r/hockey NHL Power Rankings Week 3: Feeling Blue Edition Source
What We Learned: The NHL's other looming free agent apocalypse
Tumblr media
Blake Wheeler will be difficult for the Jets to retain. (Jonathan Kozub/NHLI via Getty Images)
After all the attention that has been understandably paid to Toronto’s current and future salary cap situation, it got me thinking about other elite teams and what their cap situations look like going forward.
Obviously Tampa is going to have some big issues dealing with their roster, even before the potential addition of Erik Karlsson, simply because they have so many elite and very good players. They’re already close to a cap crunch of sorts, and next summer they will have to strike new deals for Nikita Kucherov, Yanni Gourde, Brayden Point, Anton Stralman, Slater Koekkoek, and Jake Dotchin, among other players.
It’s therefore likely that seismic changes are on the way for that roster, but this is something that’s already pretty broadly acknowledged league-wide. However, there’s another top team that is going to be staring down some serious issues in the future and could end up having to make some difficult decisions in short order.
Winnipeg currently has the lowest cap obligation in the league as of this writing (less than $52.7 million, giving them about $26.8 million to play with right now). As we await word of new contracts for seven restricted free agents. While most of them aren’t going to be too expensive, the new deals for Connor Hellebuyck and Jacob Trouba will likely be significant. Altogether you can expect those seven guys to pull perhaps $20 million against the cap, which leaves the Jets with plenty of room this year.
That is, one supposes, a benefit of finding a buyer for Steve Mason’s contract and Paul Stastny bouncing for Vegas with no replacement in sight except probably from within.
But it’s next year that’s the problem. The Jets will enter the 2019 offseason with about as much money in cap obligations as they have this year, but a good chunk of the core likely locked up long-term. However, they will also have to re-sign Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor among their RFAs, and both will probably be quite costly. Laine especially could potentially command at least Leon Draisaitl money, if not more (one supposes this depends heavily on what the Leafs give their pending RFAs). Again, these are deals the Jets can comfortably fit under the cap.
But it’s the UFAs that pose some serious problems. Can they reasonably afford to retain or find replacements for Blake Wheeler and Tyler Myers? You can say what you like about Myers’ contributions to the team, especially vis a vis his $5.5 million cap hit, but he’s at least a second-pair defenseman and those seem to be getting fairly expensive these days; you can probably get an upgrade at the same price point, but not as much as one might think, even if the cap goes up substantially again (which it probably won’t).
However, you absolutely won’t find a reasonable replacement for Wheeler, who’s a point-a-game guy and makes just $5.5 million against the cap. So the question becomes how much do you pay him, since he’ll be 32 to start the new deal, and what do you reasonably expect from him? Because if you’re committing multiple years and a raise to a player that far past 30, you might be in a bit of trouble sooner than later.
And while there will be a few intriguing UFA forwards potentially hitting the market that same summer (Tyler Seguin, Jeff Skinner, Jordan Eberle) the question, again, becomes what you pay those guys to hopefully be almost as good as Wheeler.
The issue for the Jets isn’t so much the salary cap as it is the fact that they’re a budget team. They have a small venue in a small market and have traditionally shied away from really approaching the cap ceiling. Last year they were more than $5 million short of it, and the season before that their obligations were about $6.5 million short. So the question becomes not only if the Jets will be able to keep those guys, but if they have the stomach to push that close to the cap ceiling (likely over $80 million at the very least) to do it. They have never exceeded $70 million in cap obligations, and though they probably will this year, one wonders if there’s a natural stopping point south of whatever the cap’s upper limit is.
If so, that creates some potentially uncomfortable questions for Kevin Cheveldayoff. On the one hand, the Jets are likely to be a top-five team in the league again this season and that carries with it the need to be as competitive as possible with an elite roster. But can this team really afford to potentially let Wheeler and/or Myers walk in free agency and get nothing in return?
There is only one bad contract on the roster that could be moveable, because that ill-advised Dmitry Kulikov deal expires after 2019-20 and you might be able to talk someone into taking your $4.33 million bottom-pair defender if you sweeten the pot or pull off a stunning con.
I don’t know that there’s a comfortable answer in what to do here, especially if there’s an internal budget that must be adhered to. You probably can’t trade a Wheeler-type player if you’re in the thick of a divisional title and potentially going after the Presidents’ Trophy. But if you keep him, don’t win the Cup, and then maybe have to let him walk in free agency, that’s going to be tough to deal with organizationally.
Again, you don’t often get multiple years of a guy scoring a point a game for just $5.6 million, so the Jets have enjoyed a significant luxury. They likely won’t get anything like it again in this league.
This is, to be sure, a rich man’s problem. When you have so many good players it becomes difficult to pay them all, it’s a lot better than the alternative. And Cheveldayoff has really put the Jets in a position where they have relatively few contracts on the books that could even be considered “iffy.”
How he maneuvers out of this fix will be pretty telling when it comes to the future of one of the best young teams in the league.
What We Learned
Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks’ power play wasn’t that good the past few years, but is it really something they can fix?
Arizona Coyotes: It’s good that we’re getting more stories about how it’s not easy to be a person of color and play this sport at a high level.
Boston Bruins: Yeah, pretty hard to disagree with this assessment.
Buffalo Sabres: Jack Eichel has been in the league too long to be able to change his number without also changing teams. It’s unacceptable.
Calgary Flames: If Spencer Foo makes the Flames’ roster, that’s probably not a good sign for the Flames’ depth.
Carolina Hurricanes: You really have to like that Calvin de Haan deal but at the same time, it’s not some sort of huge game-changer.
Chicago: Bowman hasn’t made a move to improve this team’s not-good defense, which seems like it’s not a good idea.
Colorado Avalanche: Where did anyone on earth get the idea that John Tavares might have even considered signing with Colorado? Come on.
Columbus Blue Jackets: That was a nice little extension for Boone Jenner. Can’t be mad at it.
Dallas Stars: If you get the chance to add Erik Karlsson, you take it regardless of what’s being asked. But Jeff Skinner wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize.
Detroit Red Wings: It’s possible that Filip Zadina would be able to play in the AHL if he doesn’t make the Red Wings roster, but he’ll probably make the Red Wings roster.
Edmonton Oilers: Who could have seen this Lucic deal turning into a nightmare on the day it was signed? No one!
Florida Panthers: The Panthers are gonna be a cap-limit team. Probably should have kept those Vegas guys, eh?
Los Angeles Kings: The Kings have invested in a startup with four employees and no headquarters that makes it cheaper to make good ice for hockey rinks. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Minnesota Wild: Remember when it used to be a big scandal to suggest the Wild didn’t have a lot of impact talent on the roster? Well…
Montreal Canadiens: This Shea Weber thing is so awful for the Canadiens and Marc Bergevin specifically. There are EIGHT years left on this guy’s deal.
Nashville Predators: The Preds just made a big free agency mistake.
New Jersey Devils: No. Next question.
New York Islanders: This is one of those “whether he likes it or not” things.
New York Rangers: A thing teams with cap space should always do is try to get in on trades as third-party negotiators, take on some salary and get picks and prospects out of it. Always use as much cap space as you can if it gets you something.
Ottawa Senators: This headline is bleak.
Philadelphia Flyers: Based on where Christian Folin went to college, this is a very savvy pickup.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Barring a bounceback year from Matt Murray (possible), the Pens are firmly outside the top five teams in the league but also probably somewhere solidly in the top eight.
San Jose Sharks: Nice little contract for Dylan DeMelo. Term and money look good for both sides.
St. Louis Blues: Dmitrij Jaskin never really panned out as expected, huh? He only had six goals last season.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Pretty amazing how fast you can go from “we might be done for the summer” to “we might trade for one of the best players alive.”
Toronto Maple Leafs: We’re still gonna act like the Leafs have the flexibility to trade for a defenseman of note, huh?
Vancouver Canucks: Im… improve the power play? Am I reading that right?
Vegas Golden Knights: I love this Colin Miller deal. Really good player signed cheap for his entire prime.
Washington Capitals: Real nervous to see how this Tom Wilson deal works out. It’s gonna be bonkers.
Winnipeg Jets: This is bold prognostication.
Gold Star Award
This is very nice from Vegas.
Minus of the Weekend
Just trade Karlsson already!!!
One Thing the NHL Award Voters Didn’t Screw Up Was Taylor Hall as MVP
The 2018 NHL Awards show may have felt like it lasted five hours but it only ran [checks watch] two hours and 15 minutes? Holy shit, that can’t be right, can it? I’ve seen Greg Maddux pitch quicker baseball games than that. How did giving out a handful of sports trophies become such a bloated event?
Watch how quickly I can whittle this show down to 90 minutes:
CUT OUT THE LADY BYNG AWARD — Nobody cares and voting (more below) shows voters don’t really care, either. Give it away before the show the way the Academy Awards give out the best foreign language animated documentary editing awards weeks earlier in the basement of a Dave & Busters.
NO MORE MAGIC SHOWS — Did we really watch a seven-minute “is this your card” trick? Is this because the show is in Vegas? Let those oiled up dancing guys present an award if you want some Vegas flavor. Stopping the show for a rejected set piece from the Now You See Me 3 script isn’t something anyone wants.
NO MORE VIDEO GAME COVER REVEALS — This is very much me being old and shaking my fist at a cloud, but sell your video game during commercial breaks, assholes.
NO MORE JACOB TREMBLAY INTERVIEWS — A trained child actor can’t make uncomfortable hockey players fun. Just let the kid host next year.
Listen to the latest episode of Biscuits, VICE Sports’ hockey podcast
NO MORE SAP STAT THINGIES — Nothing says excitement and pageantry and fun like some dorky-ass facts and figures about some dude’s stats. Again: SELL YOUR PRODUCT DURING COMMERCIAL BREAKS.
I think if you give me enough time I can trim this show to an action-packed hour but we need to move on to the awards and discuss who won, who should have won, and which voters made us laugh the hardest.
NORRIS TROPHY
Winner: Victor Hedman, Tampa Bay Lightning Runners-up: PK Subban, Nashville Predators; Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings
Did they get it right? Yes. Hedman, however, is lucky the PHWA gave Doughty his lifetime achievement Norris Trophy a few years ago because his numbers were good enough this season to warrant the sympathy trophy.
What was the funniest vote? There are a lot of worthy choices (Jaccob Slavin was fifth on a ballot!) but this space is dedicated to the PHWA voter who thought Dougie Hamilton was the second-best defenseman in the NHL this season. Hamilton was named on just three of 164 ballots—he was voted fifth on the two others—so either one renegade voter saw something no one else did or a local Calgary media member got too close to the situation.
CALDER TROPHY
Winner: Mat Barzal, New York Islanders Runners-up: Brock Boeser, Vancouver Canucks; Clayton Keller, Arizona Coyotes
Did they get it right? Yes. And by “they” I mean the PHWA voters and not Lou Lamoriello, whose archaic hair rules left Barzal with a much shorter haircut than what he could have had on a special night.
What was the funniest vote? There was nothing too egregious but I’d like to say hi to the Boston voter who felt Jake DeBrusk was the fifth-best rookie in the NHL.
LADY BYNG TROPHY
Winner: William Karlsson, Vegas Golden Knights Runners-up: Ryan O’Reilly, Buffalo Sabres; Aleksander Barkov, Florida Panthers
Did they get it right? Sure. Who knows? Karlsson seems nice. I’m sure he says “sir” and “madam” and knows which one is the salad fork at the royal castle. I have no idea why this award exists.
What was the funniest vote? This award is dumb but the criteria is very clear — be gentlemanly. So most voters just look for guys with a lot of points and few penalty minutes. The problem with that is it leaves a blind spot that leads to Auston Matthews finishing eighth in voting (with six first-place votes) and Connor McDavid finishing 10th (with two first-place votes). Why is this funny?
McDavid was hit with an abuse of officials penalty in January and Matthews mocked a referee a few days earlier by pointing at the net after scoring a goal because an earlier goal was disallowed. Were those two things fantastic? You bet. Would I like to see more of this? Oh yeah.
But it should disqualify them from getting any votes for “gentlemanly” play during that season. You may as well have a Tallest Player Award and give it to Mats Zuccarello.
SELKE TROPHY
Winner: Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings Runners-up: Sean Couturier, Philadelphia Flyers; Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins
https://sports.vice.com/en_ca/embed/article/gyk8z3/washington-capitals-alex-ovechkin-destroyed-his-critics-with-stanley-cup-win-over-vegas-golden-knights?utm_source=stylizedembed_sports.vice.com&utm_campaign=evk93a&site=sports
Did they get it right? No. I mean, I guess not. I don’t know. Why is there a best defensive forward award but not a best offensive defenseman award? More sports need extremely narrow awards for specific positions. Baseball can adopt a best infielder base runner. Football can honor the best tight end route runners. But apparently Kopitar wasn’t as good this year as he has been in the past. They should just give it to Bergeron every year until he decides it’s time to give it to Brad Marchand.
What was the funniest vote? Nobody voted for a defenseman or goaltender so this vote is devoid of humor.
JACK ADAMS AWARD
Winner: Gerard Gallant, Vegas Golden Knights Runners-up: Jared Bednar, Colorado Avalanche; Bruce Cassidy, Boston Bruins
Did they get it right? Yes. In any other season, Bednar runs away with this and there’s a case to be made he deserved it more than Gallant, but guiding an expansion team to a 100-point season made this automatic. They survived two months during the first half without Marc-Andre Fleury and still cruised to a playoff spot.
What was the funniest vote? I’d like to meet the two people who felt Randy Carlyle of the Anaheim Ducks was the second-best coach, which means they felt Carlyle did a better job than either Gallant or Bednar. I’m putting my money on one of those votes coming from Steve Simmons.
VEZINA TROPHY
Winner: Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators Runners-up: Andrei Vasilevskiy, Tampa Bay Lightning; Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets
https://sports.vice.com/en_ca/embed/article/nek53q/the-ottawa-senators-need-to-relocate-if-eugene-melnyk-doesnt-sell-the-team?utm_source=stylizedembed_sports.vice.com&utm_campaign=evk93a&site=sports
Did they get it right? Yeah, but who did John Gibson piss off among the general managers who voted for this award? Somehow he finished sixth behind Frederik Andersen, who somehow finished fourth with a first-place vote despite a pedestrian .918 save percentage. Apparently the Hockey Men can be just as bad at voting as people who Never Played The Game.
What was the funniest vote? Easily, it’s the guy who felt Andersen was the best goaltender in the NHL this season. We likely will never figure out which GM cast this vote, but my guess is Marc Bergevin. Why? Because Andersen went 3-0 with a .950 save percentage against the Canadiens this season, and that’s the sort of dumbass shit Bergevin would do. If this ever gets confirmed, please tweet a screenshot of this paragraph with the link to the story, because clicks are always nice.
GENERAL MANAGER OF THE YEAR
Winner: George McPhee, Vegas Golden Knights Runners-up: Kevin Cheveldayoff, Winnipeg Jets; Steve Yzerman, Tampa Bay Lightning
Did they get it right? No! Here’s the thing—we give the Jack Adams to the coach of the team we all thought would be crap before the season that turned out to be awesome. The reason we think a team is crap is how the GM builds it. So how can Gallant be the best coach if he’s simply coaching the team assembled by the best GM? You can’t have both! This is also a flawed award because Cheveldayoff (he should have won!) slowly built the team over many years. McPhee did some nice things in the expansion draft but tricking Dale Tallon into giving you two studs for nothing isn’t a big deal when Tallon probably still falls for the “got your nose” trick.
What was the funniest vote? This award is chosen by a swath of front-office and media types, so please let me meet the person who decided Ron Hextall was GM of the Year so I can take an Amtrak down to Philadelphia and have a Yuengling with this local.
HART TROPHY
Winner: Taylor Hall, New Jersey Devils Runners-up: Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche; Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings
Did they get it right? Yes! Surprisingly! And the vote was close—Hall edged MacKinnon by 70 points and held a 72-60 advantage in first-place votes. Hall had a slightly better MVP case and he won by a margin that presented that case. I went through all the ballots, looked very closely, and it turns out nobody casted a Hart vote for Adam Larsson.
What was the funniest vote? There wasn’t anything all that “what an idiot” funny but a very “huh, that’s funny” vote was Sidney Crosby getting just one fifth-place vote and nothing else. He had 89 points in 82 games, finished 10th in scoring but found himself tied in voting with Eric Staal and behind Artemi Panarin. It feels a little like the end of an era but also a little like taking Crosby for granted. Maybe it’s both.
Welcome to the Stanley Cup Final Matchup That Makes No Sense
The Stanley Cup Final is set, and it will see the Washington Capitals, a team that never wins it all because they're choking dogs, face the Vegas Golden Knights, a team that never wins it all because they didn't even exist until a few minutes ago. The world doesn't make sense and we've all been exposed as fools for caring about any of this. Nothing matters. On to the preview!
In this corner: The Washington Capitals (49-26-7, 105 points, +18 goals differential), who finished first in the Metro despite taking a significant step back after back-to-back Presidents' Trophies.
The road so far: They fell behind the Blue Jackets 2-0 and then went to overtime in Game 3, at which point I tweeted this. They won that series, slayed the dragon by finally beating the Penguins in round two, and then came back to beat the Lightning in seven.
The history books: Ugly. The Capitals have never won a Stanley Cup in franchise history, which dates back to 1974. They went to the final once, back in 1998, but didn't win a game, and spent the next 20 years failing to even make it out of the second round. Oh, and they have a history of blowing big leads in the playoffs, often in the most crushing way imaginable. Now they're four games away from finally winning it all. And they're not even close to being the most surprising team in the final. Nothing matters.
Injury report: Brooks Orpik and Devante Smith-Pelly both left Game 7 with injuries and are considered day to day, and Nicklas Backstrom is still playing through some sort of hand injury that's clearly affecting him. Also, it's the playoffs, so we'll eventually find out that John Carlson's sternum is made out of papier-mâché from a child's science fair project but nobody told us.
One player to watch: Braden Holtby. Here's the ugly truth about the NHL playoffs: It's not really about who wants it more, or who knows how to win, or even who has the best team. Often, it's just about the goalies. That's it. The best goalie wins, and everyone else is just there to shoot pucks into whichever goalie goes super-nova and becomes unbeatable.
Right now, that's Holtby. He had a miserable season, one that even saw the Caps hand the starting duties to Philipp Grubauer at the start of the playoffs. But he won the job back, got better as the postseason wore on, recording his first shutout of the entire season in Game 6 against the Lightning, and then earned another in Game 7. And it's not like he's some scrub having the hot streak of a lifetime. This is the 2016 Vezina winner we're talking about, not to mention last year's runner up. All season long, Caps fans wondered where that goaltender had gone. They found him, just in time.
Key number: 11 – The number of minutes that passed in Wednesday's third period before the Lightning managed a shot on net. That's insane. The Capitals were on the road, defending a three-goal lead against a star-studded roster that had scored more goals than any team in the last eight years and was in all-out attack mode with their season on the line. And the Lightning didn't even get a shot for more than half the period. Hockey fans love to talk about how defense wins championships, and it's usually overstated. But that was a clinic in how to shut down the other side, and if the Caps can bring that approach to the final then they'll be in great shape.
Dominant narrative: The redemption of Alexander Ovechkin. For years, he's been the guy who couldn't come through in the big one. Whether it was the NHL playoffs or the Olympics or anywhere that a meaningful championship was on the line, Ovechkin was there, and he was skating off the ice with his head down while somebody else—usually Sidney Crosby—was celebrating. And there was a simple reason: He was the sort of player who could rack up personal stats, but couldn't help you win when it mattered.
Never mind if it was true—it wasn't. Never mind if the stats backed it up—they didn't. Sports fan love this narrative, and once it lands on a superstar, there's no way to shake it. Except for one: Win the whole damn thing. Ovechkin has been scoring big goals all spring, including the winner in Game 7 against Tampa. This is his time. This is where he kills the narrative once and for all. This is where he redefines his legacy forever.
Or else, he reinforces it. Those are the stakes.
The big question: How much did the Lightning take out of them? That was a brutal, nasty series, and it went the distance. Meanwhile, their opponents wrapped up their series in five and have been off since Sunday. We saw this dynamic play out in the Western Conference final, where a Winnipeg team that was better on paper came off a seven-game series to face a better-rested Vegas team. The Knights looked rusty in Game 1, then took over the series as the Jets seemed to run out of gas. The Capitals are tired and beaten up right now. They have until Monday to get some rest because the NHL hates to ever have momentum, but fatigue could still be a factor—especially if this one goes long.
Bandwagon-ability: Pretty high. It's not for the weak of heart, but we've been beating the Caps bandwagon drum for years. So far, it always ends in tears. Maybe this one does, too. But after two decades of misery, this Caps team is good, fun, and easy to like. If you're looking for a bandwagon, this is a good one. You can have Lozo's old seat.
And in this corner: The Vegas Golden Knights (51-24-7, 109 points, +43 goals differential). That was good enough to win the Pacific Division, and gave them the fifth-best record in the league.
The road so far: They swept the Kings, beat the Sharks in six and then stunned the favored Jets in five. That conference final win saw them beat Winnipeg in four straight after losing the opener, the first time all year that the Jets had lost that many in a row. At just 15 games, this is one of the shortest roads to the final of any team in recent memory.
The history books: Not applicable. As you may have heard, the Golden Knights are an expansion team.
Injury report: William Carrier has been out since the San Jose series, but could be available. Clayton Stoner remains out long term. And maybe most importantly, Marc-Andre Fleury seemed to tweak something in the clincher against the Jets. He didn't leave the game and seemed OK afterward, but it's a situation worth keeping an eye on.
One player to watch: Jonathan Marchessault. The diminutive forward's journey to the Knights' top line has been well-documented, and the Panthers' decision to make him available remains indefensible. But it happened, and he's jumped on the opportunity to make the leap from underrated (and underpaid) contributor to outright star. He racked up 75 points during the season, and has 18 more so far through the playoffs. Oh, he also drives a custom-made Lamborghini to home games now. Life is good, is what we're saying.
Key number: .947 – Fleury's save percentage so far in the playoffs. Look, I could dig up some fancy analytics, or sell you on the Knights' special teams or maybe even their imposing home record. But none of that matters as long as Fleury keeps playing like this. If you're getting .947 goaltending, you win. The Capitals will either figure out a way to get pucks past Fleury, or they're done. Simplistic, sure, but also true.
Dominant narrative: Should we be enjoying this? We've moved past the whole "Can you believe this is happening?" thing, because believe it or not, it's happening. An expansion team is about to play for the Stanley Cup. Now the question is whether or not that's a good thing.
It's become a touchy subject in the hockey world. Plenty of fans are loving this, and it's not hard to see why. It's a great underdog story, featuring a team that was literally constructed from the league's castoffs and misfits. They're not just winning, they've proving that everyone in the league—GMs, coaches, media, everyone—was wrong about, well, everything. You can see why some would find that story irresistible.
But not everyone. For some fans, especially the diehards, all of this just feels wrong. Call it jealousy if you want, but the Knights are breaking the way we think about the NHL, and about how a champion is supposed to be built. We've all been repeatedly told that the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in all of sports, and now a team is about to do it by accident. There's a thin line between "anything can happen" and "nothing actually matters" and the Knights are dangerously close to crossing it.
Or maybe not. Everyone is entitled to their opinion here, and there isn't a single right answer. But the debate is raging, and it's going to keep building as the series goes on.
Conn Smythe watch: It's pretty much Fleury all the way. In fact, he's been so good that even if the Knights lose in the final, there's a slim chance he could still win the award. A player from the losing team hasn't won the Conn Smythe since 2003 and it's only happened five times in history, but four of those were goaltenders.
The big question: When I was a kid back it the 1980s there was a coin-op arcade hockey game called "Hat Trick." Each team had one skater and one goalie, and you had to control both of them at the same time which made it really confusing, because you'd be trying to make a save with your goaltender and after a while you'd realize your one skater was off humping the boards in the corner and then when you tried to get him back the goalie would move out of the way and the other team would score. Still, it was a fun game and the players left little lines on the ice when they skated which was really cool. But then the period would end and while you were looking for another quarter a Zamboni would come out onto the ice. Except it very clearly wasn't a Zamboni, it was a tank. Like, it didn't have a gun barrel, but it had a rotating turret that the driver sat in, and tracks instead of wheels, and it just kind of went back and forth instead of following the typical Zamboni pattern. What was the deal with that? What were they trying to say?
Anyway, I'm going to spend the next few days thinking about that, because I have a better chance of figuring it out than understanding anything about this Golden Knights season. Nothing matters.
Bandwagon-ability: It really depends on whether you can get past the whole expansion team thing. If you can, then between Fleury and all the redemption narratives and the goofy pre-game shows and the underdog story, they're kind of a no-brainer.
Head-to-head: The Golden Knights won both regular season matchups because of course they did.
A word about predictions: So far this postseason, these previews are 10-for-14. We've picked the Capitals to win each round, and been right every time. We've picked the Golden Knights to lose each round, and been wrong every time. We don't know anything because nobody knows anything because, one last time, nothing matters. But we've made it this far and you want a prediction, so here we go. Let's get crazy.
The prediction: Capitals in four. Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.
Bonus prediction that is oddly specific: Alexander Ovechkin scores the Stanley Cup-winning goal in overtime.
NHL stock report: Fantasy Hockey risers and fallers
Tumblr media
Washington Capitals right wing Tom Wilson has seen a fantasy boost since moving to the team’s top line. (AP Photo/Nick Wass)
By Jan Levine, RotoWire Senior Hockey Writer Special to Yahoo Sports
This week’s article includes a change of scenery doing wonders for a center, a winger on a roll in D.C., two big losses in Vancouver and St. Louis and an offensive blueliner in a major slump.
First Liners (Risers)
Adam Henrique, C, ANA – Henrique has settled in nicely in Anaheim, notching a point in all five games as a Duck. The impending return of Ryan Getzlaf will likely move Henrique down to the second line, but Henrique’s chemistry with Corey Perry could allow Perry to remain as a duo with the former Devil. Eventually, Ryan Kesler will also return, possibly moving Henrique even further down the center pecking order, but enjoy the ride while it lasts.
Tyler Johnson, C, TB – Johnson has been playing right wing but qualifies in most leagues as a center. His two assists Saturday in Tampa’s 4-3 win over the Jets extended his point streak to four games and seven points, including five assists. Johnson has just six goals on the season, impacted by a 15-game goalless streak, continuing his struggles the past two seasons after a breakout in 2014-15. The myriad weapons for the Lightning means that Johnson has to stay hot to keep his line placement, so be wary of placing too much reliance on him.
Tom Wilson, LW, WAS – The placement on Washington’s top line and recent production may be fleeting, but take advantage of it while it lasts. Wilson was moved to the No. 1 line with Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin, and his production has taken off since. His recent offensive outburst, a three-game point streak with three goals and four assists, is largely due to his linemates, while his willingness to throw his body around has certainly helped. Whenever T.J. Oshie returns from injury, Wilson could be moved off the top line, but for now, take advantage of his placement there.
Jason Zucker, LW, MIN – Zucker’s early-season production has shown that last year’s breakout was no fluke. A second round pick in 2010, Zucker has posted 14 goals, 10 assists and a plus-8 rating to complement four power-play points through 28 games this season. Those four power-play points are key, as that matches his production on the man advantage the past three seasons. It’s that placement that bolsters his ability to remain productive despite the likelihood of his 20.9 shooting percentage falling.
Artemi Panarin, LW, CLM – Panarin has taken a bit of time to find his way in Columbus, but he may be on the verge of a big-time breakout. He assisted on all five Blue Jackets goals Friday, giving him 19 helpers on the year. Panarin has been hurt by his shooting percentage of 8.9, resulting in just seven goals, but he if he improves closer to his 14.7 mark from last year, he could be in for a bushel full of tallies.
Nate Schmidt, D, VGK – It’s been a magical first two months for the Golden Knights, with Schmidt playing a key role in their success. The former Capital tallied two more assists Saturday, giving him a goal and 13 assists through the first 29 games of the season. Schmidt is playing more than 22 minutes per game and his 14 points leave him just three shy of his career high set just last season.
Drew Doughty, D, LA – Doughty is off to a phenomenal start with five goals and 19 assists along with a plus-16 rating through the first 31 games of the season. The coaching change from Darryl Sutter to John Stevens coupled with the much faster form of playing style under Stevens has suited Doughty and the Kings well. Doughty scored 59 points in his sophomore campaign way back when he was 19 in 2009-10. His hot early start could align him to surpass that mark by season’s end.
Cory Schneider, G, NJ – Schneider didn’t play well Friday, surrendering five goals to Columbus. Despite that poor start, he has 11 wins, a .919 save percentage and 2.72 GAA after a disastrous 2016-17 campaign. New Jersey is a much better team, especially offensively, and the recent addition of Sami Vatanen bolsters the team’s blue line — which should help Schneider post a better win total than in the past.
Tuukka Rask, G, BOS – An ugly 3-7-2 start landed Rask on the bench watching Anton Khudobin, but since returning, Rask has looked like the Vezina Trophy candidate most expected him to be. Rask has reeled off four straight wins, allowing just four total goals. Give his resurgence, it’s best to make sure he’s active again in all formats.
Others include Brayden Schenn, Logan Couture, Vincent Trocheck, Steven Stamkos, Nicklas Backstrom, Phillip Danault, Anze Kopitar, Sidney Crosby, Sean Monahan, Connor McDavid, Kyle Turris, Alex Kerfoot, Mikael Granlund, Brayden Point, Evgeni Malkin, Erik Haula, David Krejci, Joe Pavelski, Nathan MacKinnon, Marian Gaborik, David Perron, Yanni Gourde, Brad Marchand, Mats Zuccarello, Viktor Arvidsson, Jakub Voracek, Alex DeBrincat, Alexander Steen, Alex Tuch, Jesper Fast, Claude Giroux, Anders Lee, Josh Anderson, Jake Guentzel, Brock Boeser, Reilly Smith, Alex Pietrangelo, Brent Burns, Shayne Gostisbehere, Nick Leddy, Mathew Dumba, Jake Muzzin, Ivan Provorov, Noah Hanifin, John Klingberg, Keith Yandle, Jonathan Quick, Frederik Andersen, Malcolm Subban, Sergei Bobrovsky, Jake Allen, Pekka Rinne, Ryan Miller, Ben Bishop and Andrei Vasilevskiy.
Training Room (Injuries)
Bo Horvat, C, VAN – Horvat was injured Tuesday against the Hurricanes and could miss up to six weeks with a fractured foot. The 22-year-old, selected ninth overall in 2013, was off to a strong start with 10 goals and 10 assists in 28 games this season. Horvat, now the team’s top center, will be hard to replace, and his absence will make it difficult for Vancouver to remain in playoff contention.
Jaden Schwartz, LW, STL – The Blues’ offense took a huge blow last week when Schwartz was lost for at least six weeks with an ankle injury. The top-line winger was injured blocking a shot and he will be evaluated after six weeks, so his absence could conceivably stretch to two months (or more). Prior to being sidelined, Schwartz had posted 14 goals and 21 assists in 30 games with a plus-23 rating. St. Louis’ depth will be tested with Schwartz sidelined.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G, LV – Fleury, sidelined since Oct. 13 with a concussion, will return to action Tuesday against Carolina. The revolving door in net early in the year for Vegas has landed lately on Malcolm Subban, who filled in extremely well for MAF. Fleury should regain his starting job, but initially, he may be part of a timeshare with Subban.
Others include Ryan Getzlaf (face, could return to action Monday), Ryan Kesler (hip surgery, making progress), Aleksander Barkov (upper body, will play Tuesday), Ryan Johansen (upper body, placed on IR on Friday), Mika Zibanejad (concussion, still sidelined, no timetable for return, but making progress), Patric Hornqvist (hit by puck in the face Saturday, day-to-day), Sven Baertschi (hit by puck in the face Saturday, day-to-day), Justin Schultz (lower body, will miss “a couple weeks”), Roberto Luongo (lower body, out indefinitely and looks to be sidelined for a long period of time) and Matt Murray (lower-body, could play Monday).
Fourth Liners/Press Boxers (Fallers)
Matt Cullen, C, MIN – Cullen used to be an option in deep leagues. That looks to be the case no more based on his play so far this year. His goal drought has reached 16 games and he was out of the lineup Friday against Anaheim. Minnesota has little invested in him, signing Cullen to a one-year, $1 million contract this offseason, so don’t be surprised if he is out of the lineup a lot more in the short-term.
Sven Andrighetto, LW, COL – Remember when Andrighetto was the hot pickup? Those days have long past. Andrighetto did notch an assist in each of his last two games, but prior to that, he failed to score in nine straight contests. Andrighetto recorded five goals, seven assists and six multi-point showings through the first 16 games of the season, building off his strong play after coming to Colorado last season. But we all may have overestimated Andrighetto, who should be productive, just not as productive as he was earlier in the year.
Justin Faulk, D, CAR – Faulk failed to register a point for the seventh consecutive game Saturday against the Kings. After posting 49 points in 2014-15, Faulk “fell” slightly, posting back-to-back 37-point efforts the next two seasons. This year has been a complete nightmare, as Faulk has just six points in 28 games (one goal, five assists). The 25-year-old blueliner has been rumored to be on the trade block due to the other defense options in Carolina, along with the two years remaining on the six-year, $29 million contract extension he signed in March of 2014.
Connor Hellebuyck, G, WPG – Hellebuyck is the clear starter in Winnipeg, especially with Steve Mason out, but he has struggled recently. Hellebuyck has allowed nine goals in his last two games and 13 in his last four, even with a shutout in that stretch. It’s possible that Hellebuyck could use a few days off, or that the defense has struggled in front of him, but whatever the reason, his hot start is a thing of the past. But the Jets’ solid offense still makes him a solid option between the pipes in all virtual settings.
Others include Jordan Staal, Markus Granlund, Tyson Jost, Benoit Pouliot, Rick Nash (lack of goal scoring), Alex Galchenyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Cam Atkinson (healthy scratch Saturday), Ryan Pulock, Zdeno Chara, Erik Karlsson, John Gibson, Thomas Greiss, and Jimmy Howard.
