Mick Schumacher: Toto Wolff says F1 teams 'missing out' as Mercedes boss praises reserve driver's impact
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says other F1 teams are "missing out" on Mick Schumacher as the German driver struggles to find a full-time seat for the 2024 season.
Schumacher is Mercedes' reserve driver this season after being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg at Haas at the end of 2022 following two difficult seasons with the American team. Schumacher, son of seven-time world champion Michael, was criticised by Guenther Steiner for a series of expensive crashes last season, with the Haas team boss revealing in his book that Schumacher had cost in excess of £1.6m from big crashes in Saudi Arabia, Monaco and Japan. Wolff, though, feels Schumacher was not in an environment to thrive at Haas and would expect him to perform well at the next team that signs him. "I think teams are missing out, to be honest. I think he was burned last year," Wolff said at the Canadian Grand Prix. "You need to give and provide an environment and framework that is different to every driver, we are all different human beings. And whoever gets him will have a very good pilot." Schumacher's hopes of returning to the grid full-time in 2024 are looking slim with limited openings available. A promotion at Mercedes will not happen as George Russell has extended his contract and Lewis Hamilton is on the verge of signing his own extension. As things stand, the only openings in 2024 are at Alfa Romeo/Sauber, Williams, AlphaTauri and Haas - with a return to the latter almost certainly out of the question. Wolff also says he cannot make a Mercedes customer team - Williams, McLaren and Aston Martin - take on Schumacher. "I'm not even sure that we can facilitate [a seat], because every time we speak highly of him, somebody feels to say something negative," Wolff said. "Wherever I can speak highly and praise Mick, that's what I'm doing. But at the end, it's every team's authority to decide on their drivers and I very much respect that. Our contracts with the teams were never 'you have to take our junior driver', 'you have to take our reserve driver', because when I was at Williams, I also wanted to have my own choice."
Wolff: Schumacher giving Mercedes tremendous advantage
Wolff also hailed the impact Schumacher is having in his role as reserve driver with Mercedes. Hamilton and Russell praised the work the 24-year-old had done in the simulator on the Friday night of the Spanish GP which helped the team unlock more pace in the W14 and culminated in a double podium finish on the Sunday. Wolff says having Schumacher's experience to do simulator work on race weekends at European grands prix gives Mercedes a big advantage and reiterated he would have no hesitation in having Schumacher step up to cover should Russell or Hamilton be unavailable for a race. "It's great to have a mature, successful and experienced Formula 1 driver supporting us," Wolff said. "In the simulator with his feedback, that is a tremendous advantage on some of the European grands prix, having him in the sim overnight and providing data for the Saturday is a super advantage for us. "And on the other side is that, if George or Lewis were to have fish poisoning - well, Lewis can't have fish poisoning, it would be avocado poisoning - then we know we have a super guy that would drive the car well. And as much as I like the situation for the benefit of the team, I would every day of the week prefer that Mick sits in a cockpit and actually races."

Y'know what, yeah, gonna ramble a bit more about how my characters got their names because I am terrible with this.
Clarissa Dunst: Bastardization of Larry Butz's pseudonym in the third Ace Attorney game. (Laurice Deauxnim > Clarice Deauxnim > Clarissa Dunst)
Jitendra "Joseph" Prasad: Originally called Josef, after a character I once played in a high school production. Honestly not sure when that changed.
Ingrid Zheng: Bastardization of Incavris, from back when she was a Neopet.
Bee: I straight-up don't remember. I also don't remember why her name was 'Bernie' in earlier drafts.
Marshal Johnson: Named after that guy from How I Met Your Mother who was convinced bigfoot was real. An old game prototype had Clarissa and Joseph make a one-off joke about said character, and then the one-off joke became a character because I overthink my jokes.
Fiona "Finch" Meggins: Megan Finn, from The Wishlist. (Can you tell I designed most of these guys in high school?)
Jack Haas: Designed for an OCT where everyone is a jackass. QED. (The spelling of his last name was inspired by a brand of avocado.)
Lavinia Mortigan (Vinny): First name comes from the Shakespeare character, surname is the goalie from Team Haunted Woods on Neopets.
Vinny's other pseudonyms: Mostly Shakespeare characters (Margaret Claudius, Marcella Costa), though once they get found out they ask whoever's nearby for a new name. (Belladonna, Steve, and - hilariously - Lavinia again.)
Sprocket McKormic: 'Sprocket' is a temporary name used by an amnesiac in Deadly!. ("There's a theory I'm called Sprocket..."). 'McKormic' was suggested by my OCT writing partner at the time.
Annabelle Merlo: Straight-up don't remember, but I know it only starts with 'A' because the Camera Bunker Bat trio were originally named A, B, and C.
Duncan Durant and Isadora Voclain: Those two kids from A Series of Unfortunate Events. ...And therefore a certain deceased dancer, I suppose.
Eldora Doe: I hit 'random' on Death Road to Canada a couple of times, got her first name, then went "hahaha. that sounds like El Dorado."
Jonald Doe: Because I already had Eldora designed and wanted him to be just as stupid. 'Jonald', because I already knew a couple of Johns.
Patricia Sloane: Surname from the protagonist of The Intergalactic Nemesis.
Bernard Warnes: One of the placeholder names in the Monster of the Week scenario 'Damn Dirty Apes'. His maiden name (Nielsen) is because I realised too late I had the opportunity to make the BONE cast have the initials BONE. fml
Alice Benson: I know like three different fictional characters named Alice who are in the medical profession, so when I needed a paramedic for MotW you bet your ass that's the name I chose.
Rockwell Everett: Originally it was gonna be Rockwell Everest, after the mountain, but I typo'd it and couldn't be fucked changing it. Anyway yeah. He's a spelunker. His name is literally Cave Mountain.
Amethyst Orson: Amy Sullivan, from the John Dies series.
Spakel, Twikel: Typos I made in my Neopets's names at age 6 and have decided to keep, because it's funny.
Dylan Swisse: i had a multivitamin on my desk and was very tired.
Lincoln Femurbruch: There was a character in that D&D campaign named Abraham. I was very tired. Surname should probably be Femurfraktur, because her job is punching skeletons
Maya Omai: 'Maya' from Ace Attorney, 'Omai' because it makes her name sound like my, oh my!
Teeth: Originally 'Tief', because Tiefling. Then I went hahahaha that sounds like Teeth and kept it.
Mabel Crake: Originally an Earth Genasi called Marble. Because she was made out of marble. Stunning
Hat: okay, that one's on you guys
Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116: That one is also on you guys.

Avocado Phenomenon (Post #4 - Prompt 9)
What is the deal with avocados?
Growing up, I do not remember ever having avocados l. Nowadays, society considers them all the rage. This is not to say, I don't love a good avocado.
If you ever considered searching for a healthy recipe online, chances are it had avocado. Avocado toast, avocado-topped salad, and dressings. I have even tried making chocolate pudding out of avocados, and it was pretty good.
But why have they risen to popularity?
In 2016, the term avocado had close to 5,000 searches per month (Mayorga Coffee, 2022). With the birth of the Haas avocado, they have become a staple in a healthy diet. In the 80's they became the ideal 'healthy fat'. Today, social media is largely at play for its rise in popularity. Their "Instagramability" allows celebrities and wellness influencers to share their meals. According to US Foods, "In 2018, over 2.4 million posts were avocado-related" (Chef's Store 2023).
What are the consequences of this popularity?
Avocado farmers use extensive amounts of land endangering many species (Taylor and Francis, 2024) and each avocado requires 70 liters of water (De Santis, 2022). For local communities, this means drought, and the rich have private ownership over water making it a social problem.
But the social problem doesn't end there. Avocado farming and exporting cause dangerous warfare as the Cartel has become involved in the growth and distribution of avocados. Their involvement suppresses smaller farmers and endangers them and the environment. The Cartel isn't exactly the most ethical. They use violence to extort farmers and their land. They are also involved in illegal avocado plantations, which are, "encroaching on areas of the state set aside to protect the butterflies", specifically endangered monarch butterflies (Food Empowerment Project, n.d.).
What can you do to help?
Reduce your consumption of avocados, shop at local markets or food stands, eat them in season, and even grow your own!
To learn more in-depth about avocados' rise, watch a great YouTube video on the topic by the channel 'Future Proof'.

Wolff identifies 'tremendous advantage' Schumacher offers Mercedes
Mick Schumacher might not be racing in Formula 1 for 2023 but the German is playing a vital role as a reserve driver at Mercedes, according to Team Principal Toto Wolff.
Toto Wolff has identified the "tremendous advantage" for Mercedes of having Mick Schumacher in the team as a reserve Formula 1 driver. After being left without a seat on the grid for 2023 following Haas' decision to replace him with Nico Hulkenberg, Schumacher joined the Silver Arrows and has been a visible presence in the garage at each Grand Prix weekend. The German has also been working in the simulator for the squad, with his contribution recently drawing praise from Lewis Hamilton after the team's double podium at the Spanish Grand Prix. Wolff is similarly pleased with Schumacher's work at the outfit's base in Brackley, and remains confident in his abilities should he be called upon to stand in for Hamilton or George Russell. Wolff praises 'mature and successful' Schumacher "First of all, it's great to have a mature, successful and experienced Formula 1 driver supporting us," Wolff told media, including RacingNews365.com. "In the simulator with his feedback, that is of tremendous advantage. At some of the European Grands Prix, having him on the sim overnight [on the Friday] and providing data for the Saturday is a super advantage for us. "On the other side, if George were to have a fish poisoning – Lewis can't have a fish poisoning [being vegan], it would be an avocado poisoning – then we know we have a super guy that will drive the car well. "[But] as much as I like the situation for the benefit of the team, I would every day of the week prefer that Mick sits in a cockpit and actually races."

Weed, Eating and Self-Harm
Current medication: Vorellix 10mg and Amfexa 10mg.
I was given an interesting thought by my psychiatrist in our initial consult which still sticks in my mind. The idea is that overeating can be a form of self-harm. In this regard, I will have to preface this with a trigger warning for eating disorders and their effects on the body.
Weight
The last time I weighed myself was 10th October 2023. At the time the scale read 88kg, take off a kilogram for shoes, clothes and contents of pockets and I felt that 87kg was a fair representation of my weight. My age was 32 at that time.
As an adult, the lowest I recall my weight being is 71.4kg. This would have been around 2018 when I was obsessively tracking calories, exercising every morning at 5am and following a vegan diet at the time. As happy as I was with the weight loss over a few months, I eventually stopped as the realities of life started to hit me.
Since then, my weight has fluctuated in between 72kg and 90kg. I think that around the start of July 2023 I would have been pushing 90kg and this was confirmed in October 2023 at my weigh-in. Since starting my Amfexa at the very least I have been consistent with working out as well as not eating too badly.
Eating and Weed
Even without munchies I have a tendency to overeat and eat because I am bored. I genuinely feel that stress-eating is something I am conscious of doing but I don't really have any conscious control over it all the time. Sometimes when I start I just can't stop. This is behaviour that I know alcoholics experience with drinking.
When I have munchies it is on another level where I will continuously eat without ever stopping.
The good news is that the Amfexa has a side effect of suppressing my appetite for which I am very glad. I am actually a bit worried that if I was not on it, I would continue to eat a lot.
The reason I am writing this is that I take a day off gym in the week to kind of recover and refeed because I eat at a calorie deficit for the other six days of the week. Yesterday (02nd December 2023) was meant to be that day. However I was out the house and walking around all day so around 8k steps is pretty decent compared to my usual activity. But I also smoked some weed and I ate more than I should have on a normal refeed day.
So my eating yesterday was as follows:
Breakfast - a little bit of cornflakes and milk.
Lunch - Americano and cannelloni with beef mince and cheese. This was at a restaurant for lunch with my mum at maybe 1300h
At around 1700h I smoked a joint. It was an outdoor pre-roll, very cheap. After this I ate as follows: microwave popcorn, my usual home filter coffee, a smaller than usual slice of carrot cake, two crumbed chicken drumsticks with one roti and one multi-seed wrap as well as a big bowl of carrot salad with vinegar dressing (no oil in the salad), two slices of brown toast with a haas avocado from the six-pack with salt, pepper and sriracha, a small bowl of vanilla ice cream with eight small squares of Cadbury milk chocolate, and a mug of my usual home tea. This was between 1700h and 2300h.
In all honesty I was a bit afraid until now because I actually lost track of the cake and could not remember what I had eaten entirely. But now that I do recall I feel much more relieved about the loss of control with food. If I am being honest I normally would not have eaten the cake and the ice cream. This is very interesting because I think if I was not feeling a high level of stress yesterday I would not have eaten those things.
For the day I figure my calories consumed were around 3200 calories which is much more than I have eaten in a while both in terms of volume and caloric density. As I am reflecting on this I realise that I am actually happy about one thing; I did not order UberEats and I did not binge on fast food. This is a huge victory for me and the refeed day, even though it did get out of control with the cake and ice cream, was a success even on weed!
Aftermath
The aftermath is that I had massive shits today. But they were not painful or bad. They were consistent and smoother than my usual binge-eating aftereffects. And I am happy to note that I am feeling fine. I did not go to the gym today because I think that yesterday actually necessitated a rest. I did legs on 01st December 2023 and then the walking yesterday plus food made me think that future refeed days need to be days that I work out on.
Another interesting thing, to go back to the start of this post, is the aspect of self-harm. I definitely do not "feel good" today compared to other days in terms of my physical well-being. It sounds foolish to say but I did not really ever consider the effects of overeating except for weight gain. My mood is better than usual as well. This makes me think that self-harm through overeating is something that I would do unconsciously. And now that I am conscious of it, it is something that I do not do. Try as I might, I cannot mark yesterday's refeed as a total loss of control or as self-harm via eating.
Today I have just eaten a large bowl of cornflakes. It is important to note that when I say "large" now, this was a normal amount to me before. I think I am going to have some avocado and toast with sat and sriracha just now because it is 1700h and I am feeling hungry. At the same time I think this might be my last meal for today because I don't feel like I am starving.
Conclusion
Unrelated to the topic but I am a bit worried about my prescription for the next month. I have been prescribed Vyvanse and I want to take it if I can get it because pharmacies have low stock. And in this regard I am uncertain if I should continue with the Amfexa if I can't get the Vyvanse.
Oh well, we will see.
xoxo
