Listen I am on my rewatch of The Glory and aside from being madly in love with both the romantic and unhinged nature of Joo Yeo Jeong, The absolute disparity between the good and bad parents in this show is killing me.
Dong-Eun’s mom? Absolute piece of trash with no class.
Yeon-Jin’s mom? Karen who thinks money and power can buy you anything.
Yeo-Jeong’s mom? Absolutely 100% supportive, but not stupid and committed to doing the right thing.
Kang Hyeon-Nam? The baddest bitch alive, willing to do anything to save her daughter even if it means endangering herself.
And then you have the disparity between Jae Jun and Do-Hyeong, who both cared about Ye-Sol. Jae Jun only cared about her when it was convenient for him and wanted her not because he truly loved her but because he wanted to possess her. Meanwhile, you have Do-Hyeong who is constantly looking out for Ye-Sol’s best interests even though he isn’t biologically related to her.
NOT ONLY THAT, but you also have Yeo-Jeong’s Dad, who was murdered by a patient while doing what he thought was right by saving him, unintentionally starting his son on the path to revenge.
And like yeah The Glory’s main focus is revenge but it’s also an exquisite commentary on how we pass down, inherit, come to terms with, and outright prevent generational trauma from our parents. It also shows how we can choose to do better or worse than they did based on the relationships we create or take for granted.
Idk man, as a generational trauma cycle breaker myself and mom of an (adopted adult) daughter that also experienced so much of that, this show gets to me on a parenting level in a way I can’t even begin to describe.
(Also Do-Yeong’s relationship with Ye-Sol makes me cry in the best way 🥹)

I agree! Though, if I'm being honest, I just want Ye-sol to live a happy life with her dad, even though she still has to live with what her mother did. So I want fics of her happiness too. She really deserves it.
I would love to write/read some grown up Ha Yesol fic. Yesol grows up and grapples with the truth. Yesol meets Moon Dongeun. Yesol finds out where Jaejun is, what happened to him. Yesol learns about the extent of her mother's and grandmother's atrocities. Yesol becomes friends with Seonah on a school trip to the States. Yesol uses her father's influence to do something bad and then vows to never use it again. Yesol throws yet another laptop in the bathtub and deals with the consequences. The fanfic potential is immense if I do say so myself :'D

Some of you guys REALLY need to learn the difference between EXPLANATION and JUSTIFICATION because they are BY NO MEANS THE SAME.
#yes this is abt tdp#like sure aaravos was JUSTIFIED in his anger but NOT in ending the world#like i could honestly excuse just killing sol regem but my dude this is not even REVENGE anymore youre just psycho#explanation vs justification#nothing can justify hurting and manipulating innocent ppl- or even ppl who have done bad things too like jfc#we have the prison system for a reason and in-universe it seems a hell of a lot more humane than irl#yes i love leola. yes i understand where aaravos is coming from. no i do not forgive him and im not an apologist.#this has been a psa#i will get off my soapbox now.#tdp#aaravos tdp#the dragon prince#do you understand

In reference to this post I reblogged earlier, but don't want to muck up UC's activity:
#i think it's more important to see that redemption is in the eye of the beholder #not everybody (characters or real people) will accept the same type or amount of repentance for the same sins #some people might not care at all if the person who wronged them feels sorry; only if they materially repaid their crimes #others can feel the opposite #and either way that's their prerogative #you can disagree with the characters or the fans or the writers about who “deserves” OR has “achieved” redemption and that's okay #because it's ultimately a complex philosophical issue #like i agree with OP!!! but there's media literacy in accepting that not everyone will
I'm going to disagree with many of these tags, especially it being "in the eye of the beholder" and would argue it's more media literate to recognize when a character has a workable redemption arc even if one disagrees they "should" get one. It took me a long time to learn this cuz of how we're usually taught redemption = forgiveness in Western (especially very Christianized, and especially if explicitly raised Christian) culture:
It doesn't rely on anyone but the person seeking redemption.
Yeah, it's the wronged party's prerogative to never forgive, to think the perpetrator's atonement (and/or punishment) is not enough and never will be. Anyone (characters and actual people) who sympathize, and who are on their side, can agree it's not ever enough and that character/person's sins are unforgivable.
And that still doesn't matter to their redemption.
We have an example of a workable redemption arc that not all accept in Final Fantasy XIV with Fordola's situation, through the Endwalker healer role quests. She was raised a collaborator of Ala Mhigo's imperial occupiers, and thought the best way to help her people was to soldier for the empire, becoming their Butcher.
In the Stormblood patches, Raganfrid says he will never forgive her; he thanks her for the aid she gave in the throne room that day, but that's all. And even in the EW healer role quests, their interactions are complicated. He still can't forgive the collaborators, even as he works to reintegrate them into Ala Mhigan society. He recognizes many thought they had no choice. He can't, won't, forget the pain of losing his own loved ones to them. This is stated multiple times.
And others, like M'rahz, Sarisha, and M'naago also struggle, also say they won't forgive...but reluctantly agree they can understand how for the sake of their families, the collaborators felt pushed against a wall, and what lengths have they themselves gone to for their own families? M'naago even scolds Fordola: she doesn't get to give up, she has to keep working--or she dies as exactly what everyone said she was.
Fordola starts out as the one punished for her sins. Through the story, she makes her choices to change and fight and work for her people as a free woman. There are still those who despise the Butcher, and always will. Redemption comes from Fordola's actions, Fordola's choices. Who forgives her and who doesn't can't change that she has changed, and continues to do so.
And in the interest of fairness, for the opposite of Fordola, we have Laurentius. In A Realm Reborn, he collaborated with the empire, selling out his nation. He came out of his punishment wanting a new chance, so joined the Crystal Braves...and immediately fell under Ilberd's sway. While others remained loyal and stuck to their morals (and paid for it with imprisonment or even death), Laurentius went along with all of Ilberd's plans. And in the end, the player gets an opinion in the punishment he and his comrade face, but it's clear from talking to Raubahn there isn't much hope. Laurentius had his chances, but he didn't make any effort to actually change--so faced the consequences.
For Reference for the Healer Role Quests: Garland Tools Healer quest text starting with "Far From Free", and my own saved text in Gdocs (raw, not very organized compared to my later saved/updated docs).
(Nero's the war criminal who...didn't even get a slap on the wrist, he just waltzed into a leadership meeting 15 mins late with Starbucks and has been helping us save the world since. Gaius is the war criminal that went through traumas, saw his privileged preconceptions torn apart, and is starting down that road in the wake of Werlyt to clean up his mistakes and not let his children's sacrifices be in vain. None of these characters "need" punishment to decide to change; some of it simply happens as part of their stories, but they make their own choices and actions toward atonement.)
(Also redemption is usually an ongoing process, which is why "Death Equals Redemption", like how Yotusyu's situation is framed, is so dicey and often unsatisfying; are they actually changed, or they just getting out of putting in that effort to? Nothing indicated Yotsuyu actually cared to change, as sympathetic as she was in the end! But she has her redemptive moment for her fans, and the people who hate/won't forgive her also "win"--the trope is a "have your cake and eat it too" writing cop-out IMO at this point.)
#final fantasy xiv#endwalker#stormblood#role quests#redemption#character arcs#fordola rem lupis#raganfrid bleaker#laurentius daye#yotsuyu ge brutus#I also blame everyone touting Zuko from Avatar the Last Airbender as a 'good redemption arc'#when from the start he's a protagonist on the wrong side making bad choices & failing at them cuz he's not as evil as Zhao & Azula & Ozai#he's an antagonist to Team Avatar for much of it yes but he's also in a dual position as we follow his exploits as much as the Gaang#Zuko makes mistakes he has to apologize & make up for but as mixed up as that kid was he never actually hit murderous war criminal#heck his story starts cuz he was trying to protect soldiers from being needlessly sacrificed by actual warmongers#so Zuko the kids show character is Palatable & easy to forgive cuz he's always been sympathetic & Trying to do right but failing at it#but anyone 'worse' than traumatized teen navigating dangerous & toxic situations trying to do what's right w/out knowing what that is - SOL#cuz so many people have never expanded thinking about morality beyond that kids show

i've been dead and gone bc of school and jobsearching and everything happening all at once but ive been playing the boktai series games lately and i'm enjoying it a lot. I just got past the third boss in boktai 2. I don't know why but i'm enthralled with these games, i highly recommend them
#WOE TEN THOUSAND TAG MUSINGS BE UPON YE (this is a warning)#boktai#(pointing) the battle network fan has fallen for the crossover marketing 20 years late#the first gif is bc i imagine the bosses waiting all polite like for django to finish eating healing items when heal scumming in fights.#twenty apples a day keeps the damage away#django is like a son to me hes just a little guy#if the text is hard to read in the third image it says “The tick damage in sunlight brothers”#i find it funny that vampire django still gains his energy from sunlight after turning. his voiceline changes too#it's hard to tell if it's bc hes supposed to sound gruff or like hes in pain. but it makes me feel bad for recharging energy like that#i figure he'd be wound up abt this since it seems he views any connection to his father with a lot of weight#(e.x: zazie pointing out he's crying just after the gun del sol got stolen at the start of 2)#hence why he's depressed in that image#also all the official art of him looks very cool but im incapable of seeing him like that his sprite makes him look like a scruffy dog#im torn between thinking it's cute nd wanting to make fun of him with doodles. least typical vampire appearance with the most typical power#the way you kill immortals (vampires) in this game is so metal i need to rant abt it Somewhere#so like boktai is a game series abt vampire hunting but it's rather sci-fi abt it. instead of more typical weapons you use solar energy#the immortals resurrect after being killed#but this can be prevented via purification. the way this goes is#after winning a bossfight the enemy will get sealed in a coffin. that you then to drag allll the way back outside the dungeon#(often with new puzzles thanks to the coffin being an extra weight)#all the while the immortal inside tries to escape#the objective is to get the immortal to a. summoning circle i guess?#housing devices called pile drivers. they're more like lenses or mirrors though.#they focus sunrays on the coffin purifying the immortal after a brief fight that's like#preventing the boss from attacking the pile drivers until it dies#like. this doesn't sound all that special but most bosses you fight are sentient and i just think it's a bit of a brutal method#for a main protagonist to use#i keep thinking of how it must feel to do it for a living. something like a funeral driver but you're the murderer and the corpse isn't dea#and instead of a funeral you're taking them to a mega death laser array that'll slowly chip away at their health#and then boktai 2 inflicts that on django and im like. is he ok (he's ok but he died)

actually on the topic of old drawings; the first-ever drawings I did of Rich, Liam, and Sol turned up on my deep-dive of old discord messages and I was compelled to redraw/compare!
Rich very much predates the worldbuilding of the Michigan Fleet universe, as one of Key/rollerskatinglizard's oldest OCs, and was originally just a normal amount of un-tweaked big and buff dude, although I also sucked at drawing people with body mass back when I drew these lol. It does make me laugh that the huge crooked nose and sad, downturned eyes have been a constant from sketch one!
Liam predates the Michigan Fleet as well and was originally mine! He..... hasn't changed much actually haha. Although his size/prettiness/temper being a genetic modification is new, from the first lengthy discussion of mods where fourhands and hastings both got established (although not by those names). It looks like I coined the mod name "Babydoll", which I do NOT remember doing.
Sol was the most Group Effort of these three, looking back at the messages: Key invented a salty little gorgeous asshole with modded hearing for a snatch of interaction in a wildly different context than his new introduction; roach was the one who suggested the elf ears and iridescent hair to go along with it, I was the one who suggested he was from New York and threw several large pinches of "a big tsundere about Rich" into the mix, and a lot of the much later patrician worldbuilding was roach.
#rich merrill#liam beaker#sol king#Liam is basically the same dude he just now has more backstory and baggage lmao#but tbh his original character outline was 'very flamboyant and affectionate mom friend with a ferocious temper' and that part sure stuck#LOOK IT WENT LIKE THIS.#wrote a side thing that wasn't going to be canon. invented guys for it. Sol was there divorced of his native context. then we wrote an--#--''AU'' where Rich met him in NYC first instead just like. for fun. and then we were like actually? YES. and then also the OG sidefic--#--turned into a full novel and all the OTHER boys we invented for it turned into super fun and interesting characters. and now we're--#--in edits. but also the AU of the self-indulgent side story that became an enormous three-part novel got published first. and that's grea#what I'm saying is Sol's whole deal is such a great example of the absolute horseshit we get up to as authors and i say that with great lov#And also: MULTIPLE novels and novellas in this meandering series of releases have been things somebody started on the side or suggested lik#''haha this would be a fun AU to noodle on'' and now there's hundreds of thousands of words of it.

Blaze concepts for Sol Side – Base / Burning / Brilliant
For Burning Blaze, I wanted to switch up her colors to make it stand out better. Brilliant Blaze on the other hand is a conditional super state as an equivalent to Hyper Sonic. The former is meant to feel more controlled (like a bunsen burner) while the latter is "wilder"
#sol side#blaze the cat#burning blaze#brilliant blaze#concepts#sth#my art#text#also yes the star has significance but thats for later 🤫

We are 9 episodes in on My Stand In and I'm still hissing at my screen every time Sol shows up.
That man was really out here ranting and raving and being all WHY AREN'T YOU GUYS MAD about Ming as if he was the one being wronged like Joe didn't whole ass watch his damn body be cremated the day before. He really thinks he a main character and he's not even the possible second choice love interest.
Like he really dragged Joe away while he was calling for Ming and then told Joe to snap out of it cause Ming doesn't love him. Good to see he's still willing to physically drag Joe away from things he doesn't like, no matter what Joe wants, even in his second life.
He also has the audacity to be out here refusing to read the damn room and see that Joe looks uncomfortable AF anytime he drops a random "I care about you so much" line because it's not needed nor appreciated. He smooth brought Joe into his press conference to call him his boyfriend! And we all know good and damn well Joe wouldn't have agreed to that.
And then he was out here trying to fight Ming at the afterparty saying he doesn't give a fuck knowing good and damn well it would be Joe's ass if a public fight happened because he is the most unknown of the unknowns, while Ming's family is wealthy and Sol is, at the very least, semi-famous.
He's just always talking mad shit about how Ming is terrible and how he wants to save Joe from him and blah blah, but then he's instigating fights with Ming left and right. And personally, if I knew my friend was with a shitty man, I wouldn't keep antagonizing that man knowing my friend is the one who's dealing with the consequences every time. But I would actually want better for my friend because I care about them as a person and not as an ideal image I built in my head of someone I want to date. And that is clearly where Sol and I differ.
Like Ming is a delusional asshole, no argument there, but Sol is a Nice Guy and nah. I want him GONE. Let him go back to Korea and get some dick there. Cause he's not an option for Joe, nor was he ever at any point during this show, yet he really thinks he has relevancy here. Ming is better than me (or more insecure) cause I would have long since told Sol you don't compare when you don't compete.
#my stand in#my stand in the series#I am here today because I am a Hater#I am a Certified Sol Hater#like I'm sorry he IS NOT a good friend to Joe#simply because he refuses to accept any of Joe's boundaries#and yes Ming is terrible and it would suck to watch your friend be stuck with a terrible man#but nothing Sol has done has helped Joe out of that situation#and in fact has made shit a lot worse with his jealous shit stirring#and no actual friend would be intentionally riling up their friend's shitty man if they actually cared about their friend#I'm not sorry I'm not sorry#Sol could be a good friend to Joe but he'd have to let go of his delusion that Joe will ever pick him#Joe moved on YEARS ago when Sol went ew and ran away to Korea rather than face Joe's homo feelings for him#it's unfortunate for Sol that he missed his chance but it's not Joe's problem to deal with now#and he has said several times he does not see Sol like that#and yet he keeps being all I CARE ABOUT YOU I'D NEVER DO THAT I'LL BUY YOUR SHIT FOR YOU I'LL PAY YOUR DEBTS#it's just not cute#regular clyde

Stone is my poor deeply tragic little... um, mountain.
Her existence is a crime, proof of her existence condemning everyone around her to death or worse.
Stone once saw the stars and now cannot.
Stone wants to fly, but cannot.
Stone once trusted The Thief of Faces. Stone once trusted the Queen of Skite. She was cut open, violated, and bleeds eternally.
She once was friend to Salt (or more?), but Salt is gone.
She has parents. One hid her in a basement, the other weeps across the Zee. Maybe they cared, maybe they care, but she is alone.
She once had parents. but they weren't there when the Neath was new. She was left, alone. She is alone.
She has kingdoms and worshippers and company and is loved by many. But when you open the Avid Horizon, you can see her far in the South— jealous.
No wonder that wound can't heal. She can't.
#My poor blorbo a mountain that can't catch a break#Yes I think there's a very strong reading of two bits of text to suggest stone/salt as lovers#Which I'd not thought of but. I like just the whole “starving salt wanted to eat stone but instead they texted and she comforted salt” thin#But flint has a section of text which makes a lot of sense as the series of events which made Mt nomad#And I think suggest Salt? “A jewel in the arms of her burning lover”#Whose burning lover. Whom. And this is from the story of flint about the ToF and Stone.#You know me I went “baz w sol and the jewel is baby stone??” Lol#But yeah in sequence it suggests to me ToF pretended to be Salt (her burning lover) to get Mt nomad#Uh I should do a proper post on it#fallen london#fallen london spoilers#Lore spoilers#Idk this is a lotta Stone thoughts which are buried deep#But I think more people should risk learning about this poor rock

opened up some original fiction notes i fully forgot making six months ago, which are about what sol is about to do to this minor antagonist, and audibly murmured, "oh, jesus Fucking christ."
#original fiction#sol#i sketched all her dialogue while she's doing um. several atrocities#you can really tell that at the time i was like 'i need to make it absolutely clear that this woman is a sadist.'#'like yes she has a mysterious moral code and does things mostly that she believes are good. she's also uh. not. not good'#'i know you thought she was gonna have a heart of gold and a sense of empathy. um. she doesn't.'#since writing the princess luz AU my horror has just gotten uglier and more grotesque because if i can write luz noceda as an#unapologetic murderer..... i need to up my game when it comes to writing women who are actually truly horrific and scawy.#the shit sol is doing now is definitely gonna echo in weird sex she has with devin later. we love to write derangement
