So I’m rn away so this post won’t be as detailed as my usual XCX Highschool AU posts. I got the colouring done on a flight, but quality will sag a little because of the program switching and lower resolution.

I made Gwin’s hair a bit more messier to make him look more…endearing?? Like messy but in a good way ig. I added an anime ahoge to add on the effect.

The glasses were added so he looks like a nerd LOL. I didn’t expect it to look good on him, but it’s a nice touch ^^

His overall outfit is pretty basic for the uniform, as I’d imagine he doesn’t go too crazy with bending the rules

Notes:

- Second year student, 16 years old

-Taking it from an unused voice line, he’s in fandom rot (dunno which fandoms he would be in) and likes doing role-playing type stuff. He keeps this private from his school life, separating his “online persona” and “real life persona” between different friends

-Leon is probably the only friend who knows both personas, as he hangs with Gwin on Discord after school to play games and sometimes meet up with him in-person when he’s off from university

-Gwin’s family lives in a rural area and are farmers, but Gwin is staying at a relative’s place to go to school (based on that XCX affinity thing that called him a farm boy)

-I’d like to think he met the Akulov siblings separately, and didn’t make the connection they were related until he saw them together by chance

-Gets teased a lot ngl 😭😭😭

-He’s probably a nerd in a subject at school, but I haven’t figured out which one.

-He such a goody-two shoes, but prob has hidden a few slip ups with Mathias in the past

Xenoscouts DA Collab

Hey there, all you Nintendo fan artists! My friends over on DeviantArt, Twitter and Tumblr are hosting a Xenoblade Chronicles collab in which the theme is camping and scout troops. Call it Xenoscouts if you will.

After some discussion and support from various allies, my friend NinGemTitan decided to come out of retirement and host this smaller-scale collaboration. In this project, artists will draw Xenoblade Chronicles characters as scouts (like real life childhood) camping peacefully but wearing creatively designed individual uniforms. Camping is one idea that may not have been used often, so this could be fresh fun. Note that only protagonists are allowed, for the sake of peace.

The background should depict a forest (during an ambiguous season) with a cabin/tents and a campfire. One artist can volunteer and make it 8000 x 4000. Maybe a Titan or two would be fitting.

Rules (subject to change):

Please ask me for a character first, and then you can add yourself to the list, unless you want me to type your name on the list for you.

Entries must be colored and full-body (unless a camping object is in front of them).

No overly invasive watermarks. Small signatures and such will suffice.

If you wish to send me the non-watermarked versions privately (through a DM), that is perfectly fine.

Each entry in the list must be separate, for arrangement freedom.

Be creative in making your scout uniform designs, as I want you to put in full effort and have fun with your entries.

Please describe what camping activity each character would do. Examples include roasting marshmallows or fish, chopping wood, etc.

Entries must be 500 x 500 at a minimum.

Tracing, bases, and AI are completely forbidden. Art must be done 100% by you.

I will regularly check on you to make sure you're on task. Each entry has a due date of one month. To get an extension, please provide a real-world explanation AND show me a WIP, no exceptions.

Ask for only one character at a time; once finished, then ask for another one. I want to give other artists an equal chance to join and reduce the chances of overdue characters. This means no reservations, but you can ask to replace your character with a new one if available. No change-backs, though.

PNGs with transparent BGs are recommended. This saves time for the assembly.

Shadows and shading must go bottom right, for consistency.

No NSFW or raunchy content.

If applicable, artists from Twitter will be added to the list.

Reasonable character suggestions are welcome!

For a tangible example of this- this is why video games have their Main Story quests, as well as their Character Specific side quests, and their more "generic" side quests- to use the Xenoblade games as an example, since they're really good at this:

In each Xenoblade game, the Main Story Quests are exactly that: The quests that push the main story forward. Very self-explanatory. In Xenoblade X, the Character-Specific side quests are Affinity Missions- Gwin and Lao's Affinity Missions are even required for the main story. The only Affinity Mission that doesn't include at least one party member is the one about Ga Jiarg and the Wriothians, which is often used as evidence for a theory that he was supposed to be a party member but got cut for time, and is also a direct echo of Melancholy Tyrea in XC1, which was the only side quest in the game to have voiced cutscenes. In Xenoblade 2, the Character-Specific side quests are Blade Quests, of which each Rare Blade (Except the New Game Plus exclusive ones) have one- and even some Legendary Blades have "Unofficial" Blade Quests in the form of Common Quests for which they're required, like Aegeaon and Roc. And in 3, the Character-Specific quests are Hero/Ascension Quests- Hero Quests, which unlock Hero party members, several of which are required for story progression, and Ascension Quests, which increase the max rank of each class, of which two are required- for Mio and Noah- and the only party members to not have an official "Ascension Quest" are Ethel and Cammuravi. And, finally, in XC1, while the least clearly defined, each character has two quests that unlock their fourth and fifth Skill Branches, which require that they be in the lead to accept. And, of course, I would be remiss to not also bring Melancholy Tyrea up here, too.

And, as for Generic Quests, which would be the closest video games have to "Filler episodes", even these give valuable insights. (Most of my examples for this will be from XC1, since that's the game I know the best, but these are present in all of the games) For (basically) every named Side Quest in XC1, one party member will have a unique comment during the acceptance dialogue if they are present in the party. Probably the most iconic/memorable example of this is in Getting To Know Dorothy, which contains the "Well excuse me, princess!" meme reference directed at Melia, but all of these comments give excellent insight into the party members- and, some quests, such as Out Like a Light? have moments/objectives where each character has unique dialogue, giving insight into their character. These are brilliant examples of how to flesh out characters, even more so than the Heart-to-Hearts, I'd argue, since you HAVE to go out of your way to do those, whereas you can just stumble upon unique comments.

Without these moments of character development, big and small, the characters in these stories would be far less compelling, and the overall story would be FAR less impactful. You care about the Telethia because you care about Melia. You care about the Colony 9 Mechon attack because you care about Shulk, Reyn, Fiora, and Dunban. You care about Colony 6 because you care about Sharla. Without caring about those characters, you wouldn't care about their conflicts and plot threads- and if you didn't care about those, you wouldn't care about the story as a whole. Obviously, this is just one example, but it illustrates, on a grander scale, why character is ESSENTIAL to storytelling- there's a reason your English teachers taught you that it's the most important element of a story, even more so than setting and plot. And that's why. A game with a bad story can be saved by good characters- just look at Kingdom Hearts 3. But a good story is not enough to make up for bad characters, which is why so many other stories fail.
