“I know, Hiccup, I had a hard time believing it as well. But…it happened, and because— because I couldn’t, Sigrid had to physically rip her off of him. She was so confused, and scared— she didn’t even know it was us at first, that’s how out of it she was. And after that, Danny barely even spoke for around a week; it was only these, these small mumbles, unless she got nightmares about it— I mean, Sigrid and I still don’t know how to calm her down from those, and she gets so violent during them, but I’d feel terrible if I had to hurt her to keep her under control. It’s just, it’s a lot.”

Caito nodded firmly, now turning his head to look at the Chief. “He is a monster. And the way he treated Danielle— the way he treated all of us? It was past disgusting. And I’m not letting them go through that again. Ever.”

The level of understanding that he was receiving from Hiccup was a bit of a shock to him, as he had never really conversed with someone like this before, except for Sigrid. “I… you’re welcome. I guess I’m only telling you this because I want you to understand that this isn’t that same Danny that came to you before; she’s different now, and right now, I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not…”

“To be truthful…I would appreciate that very much; you coming to me for advice. I don’t know if I can help much with… what I just told you, but still. And… if Danielle still wants to move in with you…I’ll let her…”

"That kind of trauma...I wouldn't even know where to start..." Just thinking about what Danny went through made his eyes sting.

He shook his head, running a hand through his hair. "No, none of you deserved to go through what you did...how, how long ago did this happen? Was this before Isla joined you, or after?" Based on what little he'd been told, he assumed it was before, but... "She...she didn't see any of that, did she?"

"No, it's good you told me, but...after doing something like that, she will never be the same. We can just, be there for her, help her as much as she'll allow us to. Maybe, in time, she can come to terms with it, but until then..." He shook his head, pressing his lips together, now speaking from experience. "To take someone's life...it, it haunts you, even when the person was beyond hope, so set in their evil ways...it's still a life." Looking down at his hand, he flexed it before making a fist. "I know having her in a less intense environment will help, but other than just giving her time...I'm not sure."

He turned to the younger man, surprised at that. "You...you would?" He almost couldn't believe it. "Thank you. I mean, it is entirely up to her, whether she wants to, but...I know your opinion is important to her." Should he mention Isla as well?

"And...Isla...I know she sticks close to Danny. If you'd allow me to take her in as well, she already gets along well with my daughter..." Holding up a hand, he quickly added, "Sorry, I know it's probably too much too soon. I, I shouldn't have said anything yet. We can speak more of living arrangements once you and the others have settled in a bit..."
