i've been keeping my posts surface level bc i'm taking my time with datv but my prediction that it was gonna be an aggressive 5/10 by way of having great highs and rancid lows is looking accurate.

it takes from dragon age 2 in a lot of ways and improves on it, but just like with inquisition, bioware still doesn't know or agree with which parts made da2 loved among fans. (side quests. it was the side quests, bioware. holy fuck it was the side quests)

it also feels increasingly obvious that veilguard is intended almost entirely for new audiences, which is fine with something like skyrim, but dragon age isn't that kind of series! you're telling a connected story that's directly impacted by the choices of the last one!

except not this time, right? which leads to what i thought was too cynical to be the truth. they didn't carry over past choices because they expected most players to not have made any. i have yet to see where throwing out the past has allowed them room to write a more involved and reactive story. so far it feels more like they just didn't have many writers who knew what those past choices could be, and they didn't want to spend time familiarizing their staff with the series.

which also explains the whitewashing of all these factions that are meant to be steeped in trauma and corruption. was it a deliberate choice to make their world more commercially palatable, or was it that people writing the world were strangers to it?

My imagination's current obsession: Golden Trio Treasure Hunters AU (of course there's Chlodrien in this)

My brain can't come up with a good way to summarize this now, but basically:

Adrien - archeologist

Chloe - museum curator

Felix - history professor

On one of Adrien's expeditions, he encounters familiar symbols and discovers that it was part of his late father's research about "The Miraculous" which is said to have magical properties, granting whoever holds it a wish.

It was all believed to be a myth, but Gabriel became obsessed in order to save his wife. Feeling neglected as a child, Adrien resented him for this; more so when it appears Gabriel had killed himself. Soon after, Emilie had passed away from her sickness.

Wanting to be a hero while redeeming his family name, he persuades Chloe and Felix to join him on a quest to find The Miraculous, but a selfish thought to bring back his parents remains at the back of his mind.

When the trio all decide to investigate further, they encounter Papillon, a military group in search of ancient artifacts including The Miraculous. They used to do it only for the money it brought, but now they have a chance to make the world "better."

They also meet Wang Fu, a descendant of one of the guardians of The Miraculous, who warn them against the dangers of using it.

With new enemies willing to kill them in exchange for the artifact, things just got a whole lot complicated.
