STUCK IN WEIRD PLACES
The ”I will never let you live this down because it's top comedy” types, who before helping you get unstuck, will laugh their socks off. They will bring this up from time to time, but every time with a big smile on their faces.
BO SINCLAIR; BRAHMS HEELSHIRE; FREDDY KRUEGER
The “I will stand there watching, having a good laugh to myself for 30 minutes before your pleas gt me moving” type, who will make the most of the situation. May or mat not bring this up, depends on the context.
JESSE CROMEANS; MICHEAL MYERS; Bo Sinclair
The ones with a smirk on their faces that will help you while simultaneously mocking you silently. Yes darling they are gentlemen, but that was a good one.
ASA EMORY; HANNIBAL LECTER;Jesse Cromeans
The “I will help you while making sure you are not hurt” type who's simply a sweetheart through and through.

This 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Greenwood IMSA GT was originally built to compete in B-Production SCCA competition by John Carusso and Emory Donaldson. It was later converted to IMSA specification which is how it remains today, with a 750 hp 468 cubic inch big block V8 under the hood from B&B Performance Racing Engines in Alcoa, Tennessee. As far as racing cars go this Corvette had a much longer…

One year ago today, Georgia Tech Police Department officers surrounded a Georgia Tech student in the midst of a mental breakdown. Rather than trying to resolve the situation, the officers - who were not armed with tasers, and at least some of whom were not trained at all to deal with mental health crises, despite the high prevalence of mental health issues at Georgia Tech and the low level of care available - shouted orders and pointed guns.
As a side note, the guns are telling: The single most basic gun safety rule is that you *never* point a gun at someone unless you plan on killing them, and that using guns as a threat is a good way to get them wrestled from you. At that point, the officers were either planning on shooting the student already or violating the very first gun safety rule you're taught.
Regardless, when they he perceived the student taking a step towards him, GTPD Officer Tyler Beck opened fire. Scout Schultz, leader of the Pride Alliance at Georgia Tech and core member of campus activist circles, crumpled, and was soon dead.
A couple days later, a vigil was taken over by GT Administration to become a media event. None of Scout's friends were allowed to speak. The peaceful protest marching towards Scout's memorial in response was intercepted and stopped outside GTPD HQ. A black trans woman (Scout's best friend, who watched them die in front of her) was chased down, pinned to the ground, and arrested for allegedly standing on a cop car. In response, violence, fighting, more arrests, rumors.
In the following days, the whole campus came out in support... of GTPD, who had just lost a car, not of the queer community that had just lost a leader and a dear friend. There were pro-GTPD chalkings, signs, donation drives, window banners, flyers, you name it. Meanwhile, quite literally every single chalking in support of queer students and Scout's friends was made by us. We demonstrated. We fought. We protested, sent letters, organized food trains, propped each other up, advocated to the administration... Meanwhile, the Pride Alliance Facebook page was so inundated by hate that it became nearly a full-time job to keep it clean. Reddit was a toxic mess, despite the heroic and similarly full-time efforts of the mods there. We had people harassing us on the streets, and media chasing us around for interviews misgendering and deadnaming everyone while the head of the LGBTQIA+ Resource Center (which was, by the way, a tiny converted cleaning supplies storage closet) begging us not to talk to anyone, to keep quiet.
There were four more arrests after the protest. Despite most of the protestors being white, every single one arrested after the fact was black. Police stormed into classrooms at other schools and dragged students off in handcuffs in front of their peers. Two of Scout's closest friends (both queer folks of color) died: both from the combined weight of existing health issues exacerbated by the extreme stress of Scout's death and the arrests. Scout's best friend was banned from campus even after she made bail (and kept banned for 60+ business days, despite the hard limit of time until a hearing *for people not banned interim* being 30 business days, and hearings for interim bans being supposed to be expedited). She was isolated from her community, robbed of her tuition, and kept from her education for two full semesters before she even got a hearing (where she was immediately allowed back on campus, since there was really no evidence against her). Then, finally, months later, the legal charge of felony standing on a cop car was dismissed for lack of evidence. Somehow, despite having similar health issues to her peers and yet being even more isolated than them, she survived - but not without lifelong scars.
There have been some improvements, but not much. The "action teams" did not get the funding to be effective, and the LGBTQIA+ one was eliminated entirely this semester. Mental health care has not improved. The only change to the treatment of queer folks has been some single-stall bathroom signs, and even that took nearly a full year. Despite the Administration's attempts to take credit for it, the funding for the new LGBTQIA+ Resource Center came from student and alumni donations. GTPD is carrying tasers now, and they're doing some more training, which is good... But they've also increased their presence and visibility in the area where Scout (and thus many of their friends) lived, and Tyler Beck is still on the force.
The trauma has not gone away. I can't tell you how many nights I've spent watching people I care about suffering. Crippling anxiety disorders of various kinds, devastating Major Depressive Disorder, fear to even go out, fear of passing GTPD HQ, Fireworks? Sirens? Flashing blue lights? PTSD. The 4th was real bad. Grades collapsed. A full half of the trans support group dropped out altogether. Numerous people who really couldn't afford it were sent to private mental hospital and left with 4-5 digit bills. And yet, still, GT offered no long-term therapy - only a few inadequate "counseling" (advice) sessions. Folks without the means to travel miles off-campus or pay for their own health insurance - folks who are only here because their fantastic talent got them full-ride scholarships or heavy student loans that they'll be paying off for the rest of their lives - had no mental health recourse, nowhere to turn to. They still don't. A few have found help by playing practice subject for psychology residents learning at Emory, but only a few. They're suffering particularly today, the anniversary of Scout's death, but campus has forgotten them.
We have not forgotten."

THE GENIUS AND HIS BETTER HALF
Tumblr media
This sharp and witty revival of Mart Crowley’s 1968 hit is a winsome window to the past that entertainingly evidences how much, and how little, things have moved on for gay men in the last almost-half-a-century.
Originally produced one year before the Stonewall riots, and predating the horror of the AIDS crisis yet to come, The Boys In The Band is a snapshot of queer history that laid down the foundations for so much LGBT theatre that was to follow. Set over one evening, the piece explores the lives and loves of eight gay men – plus one ‘straight’ interloper – as they celebrate a birthday with a house party that descends into an alcohol fuelled game of dangerous dares.
This faithful recreation is a glittering triumph, carried out with consummate craft by an enviably well-assembled ensemble, led by Ian Hallard and Mark Gatiss. As Harold, the birthday boy, Gatiss gives us a graceful grotesque – in the character’s own words: “A thirty-two year old, ugly, pock-marked, jew fairy.” Simmering with self-loathing and liberally ‘throwing shade’, this is sumptuous stagecraft that pierces any potential pomposity with scathing scrutiny and an acid tongue. A scene-stealing success.
Hallard, as Michael – our host for the evening – has the bulk of the narrative to carry here, and does so with aplomb. His transition from cheerful chappie to inexorable inebriate as events play out and drinks are downed is subtle and skilful – making it difficult to spot the exact moment at which he shrugs off social convention and launches into attack mode, all guns blazing. A deft depiction of depression with which Hallard seriously impresses – sensitively sensational.
The remainder of the all-star cast each bring something particular to the party. James Holmes is magnificently memorable as Emory – demonstrating a mastery of mincing that ought to earn him an award for outstanding command of campery. Nathan Nolan and Ben Mansfield, as Hank and Larry, have an engaging narrative of their own threaded throughout the piece – horn-locked lovers unable to agree on the status of their relationship. Theirs is a tale that echoes through the ages and one that’s resolved here with visceral verisimilitude.
John Hopkins has an unusual challenge, in that his part of Alan is the only one that’s possibly affected to any great degree by the fifty year gap between then and now. As the ostensibly heterosexual married gatecrasher, and old college friend of Michael, Alan is quite literally the ‘straight man’ in terms of plot function – an outsider excluded from the secret bond, and, in this production, a patsy for us to laugh at. We can’t help wondering though, if back in 1968, Alan was intended as more of an audience identification figure – to take Joe Public by the hand and lead them gently into an unfamiliar world of decadence and debauchery. Regardless, Hopkins’ interpretation here succeeds completely, and is enhanced by a pleasingly puzzlingly ambiguity that leaves us all guessing.
A special mention has to go to Jack Derges as the young hooker, so objectified and fetishised that he doesn’t get a name beyond Cowboy. Derges blows us away with a character that was surely the inspiration for the phrase ‘young, dumb, and full of cum’. Gift-wrapped and tagged, his rippling physique and endlessly endearing missing-of-the-point is a joy from beginning to end. Adorable.
Set and costume are detailed and precise – nailing the period with precision. And of particular note is lighting by Jack Weir – subtly shifting focus without shouting from the rooftops. A ‘light touch’ that’s bold with understatement.
While partially an historical document, this production is so bursting with life that it feels as fresh and relevant as ever. Add some technology, remove some period racism, and this could be taking place right now. Great leaps have been made, legally and socially, but what’s so well demonstrated here is that *we’ve* always known who we are and what we want, despite having to wait for the rest of society to play catch-up. Heartfelt and hilarious – unmissable!

Internship Spotlight: Jack Sheldon (IAML-French)
Tumblr media
*Here’s me last year on my GT European Union study abroad program. We visited Mont-St-Michel, France which looks right out of “Game of Thrones”!
Hello GT Liberal Arts! My name is Jack Sheldon, and I am a third-year International Affairs and Modern Languages (IAML) French student with a certificate in European and Transatlantic Affairs. I am a born and raised Atlantan, and am proud to call this city home. On campus, I am involved with Greek life, Model United Nations, Student Government, and am an Ambassador for the Ivan Allen College. You can find my Ambassador profile and contact here.
This semester, I have had the unique opportunity of interning at The Carter Center (TCC), an NGO in Atlanta that is affiliated with Emory University and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library.
Tumblr media
*The Carter Center logo. TCC was founded by President Jimmy Carter, a notable GT grad.
I am working in Peace Programs, under the Conflict Resolution Program. Within this program, there are multiple conflict resolution initiatives; I am currently working on the Mali Independent Observer (IO) unit. The Mali IO is essentially an independent consultant for the implementation of a 2015 peace agreement signed by rebel parties and the Malian government after a 2012 coup d’état and insurgency.
My work at TCC really depends on the day and is very dynamic, partially due to the fact that there was another coup d’état in the country only a few days before my start date earlier this fall. I have written memos on the post-coup government, drafted media reports, written reports to our donors like the U.S. Department of State, engaged with our francophone team in Mali, and have also gotten to work with data visualizations in Microsoft Power BI. This internship has been a great way to marry my INTA and French areas of focus in a completely new environment!
My GT Liberal Arts education has been indispensable for this internship. Previous in-class, study abroad, and extracurricular experiences in things like policy memo writing, analytical reading, data visualization, and French language skills have given me tools that I use every day on the job. Internships are a great way to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world context, something which Ivan Allen students do frequently. TCC is a very popular place where GT Liberal Arts students intern and I am glad to be among their ranks!
Thank you for reading and Go Jackets!
- Jack

"You don't keep a very watchful eye on your collection, Asa Emory." It laughs again. "What were they doing so far from your workplace, hm? Lost and alone with nobody to help them?"
The creature's tone was mocking, trying to gt under Asa's skin.
"A shame, truly. They are quite a splendid specimen.. and you treat them with such carelessness?"
Asa sighs tiredly having loaded up a specimen then he checked the tracking chip he had placed into puffs phone during their stay with him and started heading too it. He drove quickly and once their he hesitantly exsits the van searching around silently. He tightened his mask out of anxiety.
Eyes can be seen from the darkness of the woods, and carefully a creature steps into the light. It's large, maybe 20 feet in length, 8 feet tall at the least. Over it's face is a skull, looking as though it belonged to a large bird. It's fur is dark and coarse, and it's white ribs can be seen on it's chest. It's spine is fully exposed, a white stripe along its back.
"Hello, Asa Emory." It's voice is deep and sounds not quite human, an unsettling edge to it. "We finally meet."

Overview of Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) Admissions
The Georgia Institute of Technology is a selective public university that accepts less than a quarter of all applicants. Students whose SAT/ACT scores and GPA are within the institution’s requirements have a good chance of being admitted. Applicants must complete an online application, and send test scores from either the SAT or ACT and high school transcripts. Glowing recommendation letters can bolster your application, along with being involved with student organizations and attempting a challenging course load. Students with unique talents and accomplishments can still receive strong consideration even if their GPAs are outside the admission offices’ mean range. After applying, students will receive a message from an admissions counselor about the next steps of the application process. Interested students should check out the university’s website, which has helpful tips and contact information for the admissions offices.

Euro Gems from the 2018 SEMA Show
LAS VEGAS, Nevada – SEMA isn’t all about lifted trucks and muscle cars. European car enthusiasts like to mod their rides too, and scoped out plenty of German, Italian, and British metal on the show floor.
Porsche tuner Rod Emory had several builds featured in booths throughout the convention center and we’re particularly fond of his black 1959 Emory Outlaw Porsche 356 in the Porsche Booth.
The APR and Dinan booth had some beefy builds, including the godfather of all VW tunes, a 536-hp Golf R RLMS.
A more controversial build was the Bentley Continental GT coupe slammed low to the ground and parked right in front of the show’s entrance—you decide if that’s a good look.
Take a look at some of our favorite European car builds right here.
