Buckle up cause I’m also gonna get in-depth with my art process below.

I start every drawing with a very very rough sketch in red, usually with a low opacity on top of a gray background. This sketch helps me establish composition.

On top of the red sketch, still in reduced (but not as low as with the red) opacity, is the blue sketch. Just a slightly more refined version of the red sketch, often I have to move some things around to make sure the composition really works.

With the blue sketch as a guide I’m able to do my favorite part!! Line drawing!!

Coloring mostly inside the lines like the mostly good girl I am, I create a grayscale value sketch, helps guide me later when I actually fill in the real colors and values.

Brief Bio: Sarah Cooper was a human until 24. She lived a relatively tough life. Raised in foster care, she bounced around homes, never really emotionally connecting to any of the families that took her in. She aged out in the system, and then was shunted into adulthood, which-- was not fun at all, really.

She ended up playing at petty thievery, rejecting the idea of some job she'd never love for one that was-- dangerous, but fun and made her feel alive. She scrounged to have enough to live on, including pickpocketing and pilfering things when she could-- with mixed results. Her ass got kicked more often than not, but sometimes she was able to charm her way into some food or a place to sleep for a bit instead. She ended up dating a few people she'd stolen things from unsuccessfully. It was working for her because she-- loved the thrill, the fun, the games trying not to get caught, and most importantly, the adrenaline rush and the adventure of it all. It was about fun, not ending up in some soulless boring job. It was about never growing up.

At 24, she met a girl. The two hit it off at a club, and hung out often. At her birthday party, the two hooked up, and the other girl revealed she was a lycan-- a wolf. She offered to turn Fox as a gift, because running wild and free was the best thing in the world to her-- and Fox said yes. She was given the scratch on her shoulder, and turned to a fox. And while some struggled with their new inner animal instincts and coming to terms with them, Fox was one of the fastest to acclimate to lycanthropy. She was already half feral, so it just turned some of her impulses up to an eleven, and the control of them down further. But still, she was the happiest she ever had been, especially when the two parted ways, and fox decided that running wild in the woods just sounded like more fun than being a functioning member of society. She's a creature of travel, going wherever the wind takes her, unburdened of care or connection to really draw her to a home.

Who needs one, anyways? She can turn into a fucking fox!

I concussed a tooth, something that I did not know was possible, and am coping with the "lmao just take ibuprofen" of the situation by slapping the WIP with a fish and making more Lore up. This episode: "We All Know Bakura Collects Cursed Shit, Let's Explore That"

This post got LONG so now it's Under The Cut:

You can only have ONE (1) curse on you at a time. For instance, if you've got lycanthropy, you can't be afflicted by mummy rot. This is also applies to things like: having a cursed artifact attatched to you, being posessed or haunted by a ghost, Magical Illnesses, Bad Luck, Suffering from Illusions, and Blessings (Which are just curses that you like). A curse can be removed, and A More Powerful Curse CAN replace a pre-existing curse, under the right circumstances, but this still requrires significant effort on behalf of the new curse/curser. A Cursed body tends to remain Cursed.

There's basically four ways to make a Stupidly Powerful Magical thing: 1. Make a Normal Magical Thing, then have it last a really long time- it will acquire more magical energy over time, like compound interest. 2. Do something with extreme consequences to make the Magical Thing- Think "Permanent disfigurement" or "Economic Disaster" or "War Crimes". 3. If a lot of people BELIEVE it's extremely powerful, it will become so, like Warhammer 40K orks. 4. Fuck Up Real Bad.

Since He's already cursed with the Millenium Ring (Old as balls AND made with War Crimes AND a classic case of "Fucked Up Real Bad"), Bakura is pretty much immune to curses and his fear response burnt out years ago. So he has a part-time hobby of going to the Los Osaka Public Library System, assorted Museums, estate sales and so on to look for Cursed Shit. He's built up "quite a lovely little collection" of Grimoires, Hands of Glory, Monkey's Paws, Evil Little Dollies, Homonculi, a little gallery of cursed paintings, some fucked up mirrors and even a very nice murderous rocking chair. Sometimes, all that needs to happen is for an object to be returned to it's owner, and he's gotten quite adept at determining the provenonce of, legitimate owners of, and navigating the Postal Service regulations regarding the shipment of Magical Objects.

The first time The Gang sees his apartment post-Duelist Kingdom, there is a collective FIT. Tristan can't BELIEVE he's created a magical superfund site of cursed shit, did you even WARD this place?? Joey is just sitting in the living room crying because he hates all this crap, Yugi is mad that he's been doing this ALONE he could have gotten really hurt, and Tea is mad he's been doing this ALONE, she's always wanted to fistfight a Demon.

So now the gang has Scooby Gang Saturdays. Every third saturday of the month, they go somewhere to see if someone left something arcane and dagerous out where it might be messed with.

Seto Kaiba Very Much Does Not Believe In Magic, but he does believe The Compettition Is Up To Something Shady As Hell, and keeps inviting Yugi And I Guess Your Friends Can Come Too to various high-society functions so they can snoop around rich people houses so Seto knows if he needs to call the SEC or a Priest.

Yami and TK alike love this shit. Yami likes doing Acts Of Public Service and Matching Wits With the Supernatural and TK loves stealing things.

All the Millenium items can sense other magical Items, and in the case of the Puzzle and the Ring, it manifests as a sensory expirience for thier respective spirits. Yami is a very civilized hunter, either sharing Yugi's body like when they duel, or staying in ghost format and pointing at things. TK is a feral little gremlin and Bakura has to clip a leash to the Ring while it scuttles about like the worst possible combination of bloodhound and tarantula.

Tristan's job on these little hunts is to act equal parts Ghost Hunter and Home Inspector, keeping an eye out for mundane explanations in addition to his extensive knowledge of the supernatural. Joey is indespensible because like Miss Marple, he has an excellent criminal mind and can work out how some jackass might be using the cursed thing to work an angle. Tea is there in case something needs to be beaten to death with a chair.

Chase

while they inherited their Mama’s hair and were-polar bear traits; everything else is what they got from their Papa - from placid chillness to emotional intelligence

their eyes were somewhat of a genetic phenomenon, especially since their mum’s traits were considered dominant - the deep blue with gold is a nice blend and something through their life often attracted people to them

it’s a wonder their eyes hadn’t been another sort of hint as to them not being human - but in certain lights - it’s likely it was just assumed to be hazel as opposed to gold

“six feet tall and super strong” except that Chase is 6′ 4″ and Alex is on somewhat of a power trip because they’re more uh - submissive under the sheets

leans on the thicker side in terms of body type - both parental genetics and their polar bear are an influence to that

Channing

appearing very strict comes with their profession, it adds to their no nonsense attitude so they know children are taken care of

adopted, but said parents do love them a lot; not 100% clear if their biological parents were the same - said to look like their blood mother

subtle gold ring around their pupil, looks uniform, very common in lycanthropes / turned werewolves (trust fund baby, their adopted parents are politicians after all)

Arden

it is recently revealed that Arden is, in fact, an empath - still a magical with biology specifically in tune with feelings of all types

likely used their magic and got into work in allowing hurt / wronged people to redeem themselves with clear success

uses their generally unassuming disposition to approach these individuals easily; even continues being friendly with the people they help long after the charges had been dropped

felt Kieran’s feelings the most powerfully and decided to stick closer to him, mostly because they had some sort of idea that he might be a possible mate

he’s real tall and big in comparison to them but that’s because he’s a full grown demon

Oakley

they look a lot like their mum, though it is noted that they inherited their father’s eyes

their lucky clover tattoo is semi-recent, mostly as they felt it was a nice marking after they and Sebastian solved their gremlin problem

they call him “Sebby”; he did complain about it but ultimately stopped protesting after he realized he really liked to coming from their mouth

switches between different flowers they like to put in their hair and all the vases in their home swap around depending on décor and time of year (ex. red poinsettia during the winter)

soft, squishy body, while they’ve called Sebastian a bed - he lowkey uses them as a pillow more often then not

Spark

demons really have whatever appearance they like (as long as their appearance is proportionate to their age); before they met Cobalt, their hair and eyes were white before they adopted eyes as blue as his

then had white hair for the longest time until Cobalt had met the healer - where they gave themselves blond hair to match her’s (though I imagine her to be a lighter blonde)

initially self conscious of the size of their horns (one thing they couldn’t change) so Cobalt helped them get over it by putting stickers and such on them; now they do it as somewhat of a fashion statement - and because it’s fun

despite being childish; they like dressing well and is considered a little extra - Cobalt was surprised when they asked him if they looked okay because they’ve always been assured in their state of dress

rather petite in appearance, they’ve been confused for being much younger a lot so it’s not too surprising people assume they are one

Landry

Ravenoff described Landry’s lips as sultry and my brain just came with the thought that they look super dignified and intimidating and such... but we know they’re an agent of chaos

adopted Rav’s more traditional vampire-esque style after they were turned, though does try to help modernize his wardrobe in spite of his love for formal wear

a total mom friend; constantly worried about everyone - especially wanting to see Byron again as he’s been alone all the time since he’d been turned (knowing that Rav would not let them see him on their own)

in the process of learning more about vampire laws; while having some rudimentary idea from their time with Byron under Bleek’s thumb - is interested in all magical law and researching practices

they like the look corsets give them so they used to wear them if they wanted to be “extra” but since becoming a vampire, they’ve leaned into dramatics a little bit more

Finally, an updated and clean reference art for Felvos, my mushroom gremlin. Some notes about his design:

He’s middle aged and food motivated, and while he does get his fair share of exercise in foraging for herbs & rocks to study, he’s soft in the middle. he has a few scars from failed assassination attempts and work with lycanthropes.

The silver ring around his neck is his wedding band- chosen to wear on a chain rather than his fingers. He will also wear toe rings.

Felvos is known to grow and smoke various strains of nix grass for medicinal & recreational use. He often uses this habit to control and conceal his own lycanthropy. He contracted it willingly out of interest for power and caring for his life partner, Adrianos. What better way to study & treat others with the affliction than to experience it? Felvos has sacrificed much for this decision, but some Telvanni will go through whatever means necessary to see their goals met.

Penny Haywood

- First met her when I was trying to race Rowan. Took a tumble and she was there to help me up. I had been nailed by the tall and scary Professor Snape for the duel with Merula earlier. He wouldn't have it with me trying to explain I was helping  en. Penny backed up my story and assured me I did the right thing. She was so sweet and I was glad to have another friend who admired my bravery and compassion. She even offered to introduce me to her friends in Hufflepuff, to which I said "Sure, why not?" Penny has a special place in my heart as she is so supportive and kind towards me, especially in my rough first few years at Hogwarts.

Tonks

- I have to admit she's a bit wild and chaotic, if you get what I mean. A bit clumsy. We talk alot in Herbology and I enjoy our conversations. Tonks is an energetic and positive person which makes her fun to chat with. Her love for pranks and clumsiness sometimes gets on my nerves, though. She and Tulip sometimes give me headaches and I stopped always going to them with Zonko's, but I still sometimes join them to help pick out stuff for them.

Chiara Lobasca

- Very dear to me. She's rather patient and caring. We volunteer a lot in the hospital wing. I caught on to how she goes missing every month. That has always baffled me, and I wondered why. I found out she had lycanthropy. It's surely a scary truth, and I was frightened myself, but I had to give it a shot to keep her safe when she couldn't control herself once she transformed. We became very close after that. I'd trust her with my life, and I have no doubt she's the same in return.

Diego Caplan

- I'd say I don't vibe with him much. He's a bit of a showman. We became acquaintances when Penny introduced us in our first year. Aside from class I didn't spend much time with him until I joined the duelling club. Diego is a great dueller and an expert with dancing. Just different personalities and interests. He's still a pretty cool person. We're friends through the duelling club, though not much close.

- coiner of the Spoon Award: to competently fight a supernatural entity, specifically a werewolf, mostly unarmed. Just fist fight a damn werewolf.

- we learn just enough about these werewolves to know that they are dicks, even in human form.

Notes:

ClAsh are pretty much Fred and George. They can and will play pranks. They’re older than the fruit gang, and good friends with them (even if the fruit gang are the ones who get pranked the most)

Bioweapon has little to no clue what most things are. Once spent 5 minutes messing around with a lightswitch until someone told him to knock it off.

Bioweapon is incapable of speech, so he has to write things down. Their penmanship is atrocious. 

Bioweapon’s surprisingly laid back. One of the least confrontational blixes of the group.

Connie & Kat are work friends that steal each other’s lunches. They don’t know how it started but they’re still doing it because they’re friends.

Cobra is SO DONE^tm with a certain gremlin child (This Au’s Lycanthropy) and ends up accidentally starting a ‘secret’ complaining club or something. It’s mostly full of cudas. And cryptic is just in the rafters shit-talking literally everyone and is getting away with it bc nobody understands them.

He's imagining halfling-sized werewolves scurrying about like little gremlins. The concept is both amusing and terrifying. He feigns a cough to cover his chuckle and clears his throat. "As for a dragon -- I don't think a werewolf has ever been foolish enough to try." Again, there comes that barely-there smirk playing at Wolfram's lips. "And if there has been, I doubt they survived the attempt."

concept sketches for characters from something that’s kicking around my head at the moment. the lady on the left is a vampire who was turned after her then-husband (the guy in the middle) suddenly awakened as a werewolf and mauled her in the confusion and pain of transformation. believing her to be dead, he eventually shacked up with the gremlin on the right, another werewolf who has dedicated their life to studying lycanthropy and the supernatural for their own frankly kind of dumb reasons. the vampire is completely normal about her now-ex, using vampire powers and connections to secretly keep tabs on him - until she runs out of options when she gets on the wrong side of a powerful coven of vampires and needs somewhere to hide...

Halloween Advent: The Howling / Howling II

I've been aware of this franchise and its VHS box art since early adolescence, but I'd never seen a frame of it until two nights ago. Had I realized the original was a Joe Dante / John Sayles joint, I might have checked in sooner. Watching a werewolf movie in 2021 feels kind of quaint, like watching a movie about atomic mutants, or reefer-crazed teens run amok. Where vampires and zombies map pretty cleanly onto contemporary fears of being preyed on by elites from above and / or mindless hordes from below, werewolves speak to comparatively outmoded cultural anxieties. They represent wanton, unbridled carnality-- a threat our clinically sex-positive society has largely defanged.

It's no wonder lycanthropy last had a moment in the 80's, concurrent with the likes of Body Heat and Fatal Attraction, when the danger and allure of adult sexuality felt inseparably intertwined. The Howling opens with a female journalist setting up a sting for her heavy-breathing phone stalker at a Skid Row porn theater, and fully succeeds as a De Palmaesque erotic thriller before any hint of the supernatural is introduced. When the wolves do start circling, they're something to behold. The show-stopping transformations (by Rick Baker protege Rob Bottin) are like Eddie Van Halen guitar solos of practical VFX (these werewolves' main weakness might be their lag time when wolfing out). But the best effect is Dante's dark, subversive wit. The movie ends with a twist I've always wanted to see: unambiguous proof of a sinister conspiracy being broadcast live on TV, to an audience too dumb and jaded to care.

If The Howling was an unexpected treat, Howling II was the trick. It has one of the great posters of the 80's, two of the best subtitles in movie history (Your Sister is a Werewolf / Stirba: Werewolf Bitch) and opens with Christopher Lee standing next to a skeleton, intoning Biblical scripture. Sadly, it soon reveals itself to be amateurish, barely-watchable bilge. According to Wikipedia, Lee apologized to Dante for his participation on the set of Gremlins 2, which pretty much sums it up.
