Pop-Up Vase
Inspired by colourful pop-up books, the House Martin Pop-Up Vase series turns a 2-dimensional graphic design into a playful 3-dimensional artwork. Each sheet of metal is skillfully folded to push out a silhouette of a vessel, behind which is a hidden glass test tube to hold a sprig of blooms. There are three versions, this bright yellow Pitcher against a grey background, a soft pink Bottle with green background and a blue Carafe with off-white. W12.7 cm x H18 cm x D4 cm

I had fun today with my interest in botany! I studied Milkweed!
The flowers are unique. They tend to have a star-shape when viewed overhead, but the flowers are 3D shapes. There are hoods with hooks in them. Usually 5. They’re ‘bisexual’ (meaning they have both sexes on a single flower) but their sexual organs have fused into a single structure!
Most have a specific arrangement of leaves. They tend to be in pairs, so two leaves come from the same spot and go in opposite directions. The next pair of leaves come off the stem, but in perpendicular directions. So one pair goes / and the next go \
Some can be tall. One gets to be 3 feet. Others are so short! Their leaves are so closely stacked that they look like salad. The leaves tend to be long, with the base of the leaf being a round slender part, then the width widens quickly, and most of the leaf’s length is the narrowing of that leaf.
They might be stiff or floppy. The edges might be strictly straight, or loose and floppy. The veins are almost always ‘herringbone’ shaped. The leaves range in shades of green across species, health, age, and environment.
Flowers can be solid colored, or have distinct colors on specific parts, or an overall gradient. The buds may start as one color, and over time, shift to another color as they blossom.
Sometimes the petals cup the hood. Sometimes they’re slicked back, reflexes. Sometimes the horns are visible, or hidden, or gone. The hoods themselves can be short or tall, round or straight, slender or wide. I named the common shapes: candle, vase, petally, ball, tube. Hehe.
They tend to like sun, but others prefer shade, or specifically grow in woodlands with partial shade, or prefer to grow at the base of hills and cliffs. Many are becoming rare.
Usually, they reproduce not through pollination, but just by having self-sustaining sections of them removed and relocated (humans love doing this to many plants). Pollination can be a challenge. Some take years to produce flowers. The flowers get eaten, or mowed, and then the plant cannot sexually reproduce until it makes new flowers.
This means they have low genetic diversity. Some populations will be genetically identical. As habitat is damaged, there is less chance for populations to mix genes. The distance between them grows, and invasive plants feed pollinators so they’re less likely to travel between distant populations.
Some are rare, nearly extinct, outcompeted by invasive plants or made more vulnerable by their low genetic diversity, etc. Monarch butterflies prefer to lay eggs on them, and their populations tend to correlate.
I speculate that their toxins are utilized by various herbivores, who store them in their body to make themselves toxic to predators. I wonder if their toxins might control other insect populations, helping monarch larvae by removing competitors. I dunno :3
Anyways! Thanks for reading! That’s the coolest stuff I learned while spending 9 consecutive hours reading about milkweed.

DIY Test Tube Vase
Project by Amy Azzarito:
i’ve been on a mission to bring more green things into my home – growing more plants and visiting my local flower shop more often! even though it’s been a trend for a while, i still can’t get enough of science-y stuff (beakers, test tubes, etc.) in the home. so for this simple project, i used test tubes to create little bud vases – perfect for the delicate jasmine that just came into the flower shop this morning. spring is on the way! –amy a.
Materials Needed
wood stain
block of wood – i used a simple 4×4 cut into a 10 inch block (but a piece of found wood or driftwood would be equally awesome!)
3 test tubes
electric drill
wood boring bit – my bit was 5/8″ for standard size test tube (i just brought the test tube to the hardware store and they helped size it)
flowers!
Project Steps
You want to start by drilling the holes for your test tubes using a boring bit. I evenly spaced out three holes but you could just as easily include more test tubes or use a smaller block of wood for a single test tube.
If you’re using a new piece of wood, you’ll want to stain it. I chose a dark stain and applied according the instructions.
Now it’s all a matter of assembly! Test tubes in the wood! Flowers in the test tubes!

The witchling and the god [Loki x Witch!Reader] Chapter 7
Summary: The Avengers were looking for someone to help Loki fit in with the team. To become socially acceptable, so to speak. He had been given the choice of sitting in a cell in Asgard or serving some sort of community service probation on Midgard. The Avengers and Shield both felt that as long as Loki was on Earth, he should be under supervision. This is now your job. Why? Because you’re a witch. You’re not sure why this qualifies you, but here you are, giving it a shot. What could possibly go wrong?
Tags: Witch!Reader, Magic, Witches, slow burn, everybody lives in the tower, character development, Loki‘s redemption, Stephen Strange is a friend, Loki and Stephen are frenemies, Tony Stark is a good bro, kids love Loki, Tony has stupid nicknames for everybody, eventual smut

Chapter's Note: Y’all probably have questions. I have the answers. So let’s go a few minutes back and see what happened before everything went shit. You’ll find a link for a song in the second part of this chapter. It inspired me writing this whole part of the story and sets the mood. Also be prepared to be educated on Norse mythology. Chapter 7: A weak heart
Loki follows Nurse Chapel into the boy's room. "Please be careful with him and don't upset him. He has a weak heart," the head nurse warns him.
Loki nods.
The hospital room is neutrally furnished. The centerpiece is a bed on which a pale boy lies. Several tubes lead from him to machines next to the bed. He receives oxygen and an infusion. The head end of the bed is elevated and he has a thick pillow under him, so he is almost in a sitting position. He has the blanket only half over him and he seems to be enjoying the cooler temperatures. Under his gown at chest level, the outline of an angular apparatus can be seen, which he seems to be wearing on his body. Every few seconds, a small green dot flashes under the fabric.
The room smells sterile, cool, and like something Loki remembers from wartime sick bays. It’s death lurking in the corner waiting for time to come.
"Felix, this is Loki," introduces Chapel to the Asgardian.
The boy, Felix, turns his head to Loki, who had stepped to the other side of the bed and eyes him curiously. He looks tired, dark circles under his eyes and dry, torn lips that he slowly pulls into a smile. "Hey." His voice is soft and croaks.
"Hello," Loki greets him.
Nurse Chapel gives him an encouraging nod and then retreats back to the windows, where she busies herself changing the water in the flower vases and airing the room.
"You don't have to act, you know," Felix says. "I know you are not the real Loki. No offense."
"None taken."
"Do you know anything about Norse mythology?"
"I do. What do you want to know?" Loki recognize that look. When someone is looking for answers. Because they know time is slipping through their fingers and their thoughts automatically turn to what may come after. Whether they're Asgardian or human.
"What happens after death?"
Loki takes a seat at the edge of the bed. "Everyone is made up of four parts," Loki explains what his mother taught him as a child. "The body, Hamr, disappears from this world after death. Then Flygja, which I guess you humans see as a totem or a familiar spirit. Hugr is your personality or character. This is what will move into the afterlife after death. And last, Hamingja, a part given to you by your ancestors and passed on to descendants within the family."
The boy listens to him attentively. "So Hugr is the part that could go to Valhalla? But only brave warriors are allowed there. And I have never been strong enough to fight in my life." It's a lot of words for him and it makes him cough. He points to a glass standing by his side of the bed. Loki hands it to him and helps him take a few sips.
He takes the time to think meanwhile and answers only after he puts the glass back. "In my eyes, you are strong and brave. Those are good qualifications for Valhalla. But it's also possible that you'll see Helgafjell."
"Hel?"
"Not Helheim. Helgafjell, the holy mountain. Where the dead are reunited with their families and loved ones. It is a place of home and happiness.
"That sounds beautiful. But my family doesn't believe in it. So they probably won't be there."
"Everyone has their own beliefs. But who says there can't be different terms for the same thing?" Loki says.
Felix thinks about that for a while, then nods. "I like that."
"If you have a good heart, you'll get to a good place."
"My heart is not good. That's why there's this thing on it." The boy grins at his joke, but it looks painfully distorted.
For a while they sit in silence.
Loki looks at all the apparatus and machines, listening to the soft beeping and rattling of oxygen. "I have seen many warriors on battlefields in the face of death," he then says, turning his head back to the boy. "Few have been as calm and collected in the process as you."
Felix bites his lips and looks away. "I'm scared," he admits.
"Do you trust your faith?"
"I… think so."
"Then that's stronger than your fear."
Felix's eyes look up at him. "You're good," he murmurs, rather tired from the conversation. "A good Loki."
The Asgardian does not reply. He does nothing but sit here and talk to the boy, telling him what he himself learned at a young age. He is not good at offering hope or comfort. That would be something his mother would have been better at. Even Thor probably would have found words to inspire the boy and strengthen his fighting spirit. That's what the oaf was good at. Loki merely tells tales.
"Do you know the meaning of runes?" he asks after a while of silence.
Felix, who had closed his eyes for a moment, blinks and nods. "Yes."
Nurse Chapel is still in the room, but she gives the two men privacy in their conversation. Loki is sitting with his back to her, so he knows she won't notice as he moves his finger in the air and draws a symbol. Golden light follows his movements and for a brief moment the image of a rune appears.
Felix's eyes widen.
"Eihwaz," Loki says. "It symbolizes life and death. Transitions and renewals. As soon as a yew tree dies, a new tree emerges inside the decaying trunk. It is a rune with great magical power. It helps in overcoming challenges."
With a flick of his wrist, a flat pebble appears in his hand. Tiny sparkles etching that very rune on it. He places it in Felix's hand. The boy looks at it and then back at Loki. He opens his mouth, but the Asgardian puts his finger to his lips and winks. It would remain their secret. The boy seems to like that, because he smiles and embraces the stone. Then he coughs again, this time more urgent.
On the edge of his mind, Loki notices an irregularity in the beeping of the machine. Nurse Chapel appears at the bedside and looks at the boy with concern. "Felix?" He doesn't answer, but his coughing calms down again. The beeping stops for a moment. Felix's gaze is on Loki. His lips move in two short syllables, but no more sound comes out. Goosebumps spread over Loki's arms. He recognizes death when he looks it in the eye.
Then an alarm starts in the hallway, Loki hears it through the ajar door. At the same time, the machines here in the room give off various warning signals. The head nurse pushes the Asgardian aside and rushes to action. Several doctors and nurses come rushing into the room. They crowd around the bed, blocking the view of the boy.
Loki backs away against the wall. He doesn't need to see Felix to know what's happening. He senses the crushing silence of death in the room, even as the doctors still try to stop it, to bring the boy back. The shrill, drawn-out beeping of the machine pricks his ear like a needle.
The door opens again and he sees you enter. Your expression is horrified as you realize what is going on. Your head turns to him and your eyes meet. He screwed up. Loki sees it on your face, the panic spreading through it. It's too much for him. All of this. Almost reflexively, he disappears, taking flight before you can take another step toward him.
This is bad.
This is the absolute worst.
You step back into the hallway, where the two agents have jumped on their feet. "Loki's gone," you inform them, "I don't know where to."
It reminds you of your lunch date at the restaurant, when you also thought he had disappeared. Luckily, you found him quickly back then and he had only wanted to help the girl who was lost. Maybe now you are lucky again and he just went out for some fresh air.
You hear the doctors turn off the heart monitor. This time the situation is different.
To the credit of the two agents, they are absolutely calm. "Inform Stark, Miss, we'll check if he's in the building," one of them instructs you, while the other has already started moving.
You nod and pull out your cell phone. If you were in your witch's kitchen or had more equipment with you, you might be able to find out where Loki disappeared to. Unfortunately, you have no choice but to call Tony.
The Viking Prayer Lo, there do I see my father. Lo, there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brothers. Lo, there do I see the line of my people, Back to the beginning! Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them, In the holy mountain of Helgafjell! Where the brave may live forever!
Loki stands on a beach and stares at the horizon. It's hard to tell where the sea ends and the sky begins. The wind rushes through his hair, tangling it. The fresh sea air feels good in his lungs. There's something very soothing about it. He could spend an eternity here.
The beach is empty, no one is here but him. He feels comfortable in solitude - that's what he has always told himself. But it doesn't make his heart less heavy.
Above the gentle sound of the waves, he hears a familiar sound as Thor lands near him with Mjölnir.
Thor takes a few steps toward him, glad to have found the younger prince at last. Still, he remains wary, for he is unsure of his motives. "Brother!"
Loki finally turns to face him. Thor sees the tears in his eyes, though Loki quickly blinks them away. Thor's demeanor shifts instantly and he drops his hammer to the sand, realizing he doesn't have to use it. "What happened?" he asks softly.
Loki's gaze shifts to the ground. "It's been a long time since I've seen a young warrior boy go to the other side."
It shouldn't affect him so much. It was just a young Midgardian boy. He hadn't even known him for more than fifteen minutes.
But Loki can't forget his last glance. The boy’s lips moving, his last word Loki didn't understand. Loki wonders if it was his name, a silent prayer to a god. He could give him no mercy. He had no control over where his soul would go. Loki had been unable to do anything for him. He had failed him. Just another one in a long line of disappointed ones.
He gasps for air as Thor pulls him into a tight bearhug.
At first Loki is too perplexed to react, just awkwardly puts his hands on Thor's back. But the elder doesn't let go of him until Loki relaxes. Thor has always been able to give the best hugs and Loki realizes how much he's missed them. It feels good to know his brother is here with him and he breathes a deep sigh of relief.
Quite a while passes before they break away from each other and Thor speaks up again. "Tell me about him."
And so Loki tells his brother about the boy, about Felix’ struggle and about his last moments in this life.
~~
Hours have passed and Loki still hasn't shown up.
Tony had cursed when you called him, but you have to give him credit that he jumped right into action and took all the necessary steps. He sent one of his Iron Man suits out as a search drone and Thor also set out to find his brother.
The two agents who had been with you had searched the entire hospital and its surroundings, but found nothing.
You went back to the tower, where you immediately performed a tracking spell, but without getting any results. Wherever Loki was, he didn't want to be found by you.
Finally, you make your way to the large lounge upstairs to distract yourself while you wait. First you try to read, then cook. But you can't concentrate. You keep checking your phone to see if there's an update.
Secretly, you blame yourself. Maybe you should have been more careful. Maybe the whole thing had been a bad idea. Maybe you should have gone with him into the room. But you're not a babysitter and no matter how you spin it, you wouldn't have wanted to do anything differently.
Finally you hear noises on the terrace and you see through the large windows that Thor and Loki have landed on the platform outside. Relieved, you rush to meet them as they enter in silence. "Loki!"
When he sees you, his expression darkens. It makes you stop in your tracks, as you fear he'll disappear again if you come any closer.
"How are you feeling?"
Your question seems to surprise him. He expected you to be angry about his disappearance. "I’m fine," he replies simply.
"Are you sure?" you ask, because you're not convinced. You take a step toward him and see his reddened eyes. He notices your gaze and turns his head away, just walking past you.
"It wasn’t the first dead person I've seen," he informs you coolly.
You recognize that tone by now as the mask he puts on. You can only guess how he feels underneath.
"There's no shame in mourning the dead," Thor interjects, but his brother ignores him.
Before Loki can leave you both, you follow him, grabbing his arm and turning him to face you. He opens his mouth in protest, but by then you've already pulled him into an embrace.
For the second time today, he is surprised by this. It shows how little he is used to it. You hear him inhale and exhale deeply, his warm breath against the crook of your neck.
"The doctors said it was heart failure," you murmur just enough for him to hear. "He had a donor heart, but his body rejected it. There was nothing that could be done."
"Mhm." Loki breaks away from you, but you stubbornly hold onto his hand.
"It wasn't your fault," you tell him plainly. You don't know if that's what he needs to hear, but you feel it necessary to mention it.
He nods, but doesn't meet your eyes. He withdraws his hand from you and then leaves the lounge without another word. You look after him, wondering if you should go after him.
You turn your head to Thor, who has stepped beside you and is also looking worriedly after his brother.
"Give him some time, Lady Witch. Loki is processing things in his own way," he advises you.
You hope he's right. "Thank you for finding him," you tell him.
"Of course, he's my brother," the thunder god says. "If anything, I have you to thank for taking such good care of him and giving him a second chance."
You force a smile. It's your job to take care of Loki, but you don't want to say it like that. You realize it's more than just a simple job for you. You don't know yet what to do with that knowledge. At some point, you'll have to face the consequences. But for now, you will just tell Tony that Loki has reappeared.

Another mention of Granny and Another Flower
For those keeping Track...
Chapter 1 - Mention of a bushy flowering plant with deciduous leaves and pink red flowers, being pollinated by bees and tended to by an elderly human woman.
Chapter 2 and 3 - No mention of flowers Directly in description, but we are introduced to the Mad Honey, which is red, higher in grayanotoxins, but highly regulated. So it's use as a poison is debatable. This is the first time we are Directly told about Granny.
Chapter 4 - We witness a poisoning, or rather perhaps we see the long time effects finally manifest as none of the food caused Hura's poison organs to act up, not to mention the suspicious nature of Granny's eyes.
Chapter 5 - Attention is drawn to flowers that grow in large clusters, with single and double blossoms as well as dark green lanceolate (spear head shaped) leaves. Furthermore a white substance is seen dripping from them. If it were merely sap, I feel that would have been mentioned. The most colorful of the flowers we've seen thus; red, yellow, pink, purple, and white.
Chapter 6 - Again we speak to a nervous soul...but now we notice that the nerves seem to be present when the interviewed are near the vases of flowers which the palace has many, as the lady Governor apparently likes how they freshen the rooms. But the Lady Governor apparently does Not like Granny, and there was a social scuffle of her being dismissed and rehired.
Flowers are pink/purple with some darker spots on the petals, tube shaped with a long spike like stem. Hairy leaves and a toothed margin (the edges are spiky).
With the next interviewee, we again see nerves popping up on someone who is near a vase of flowers (this time drooping white trumpet flowers with a single stem and long narrow leaves, and yellow stamen)
I'm not sure the exact species of flower is the issue...but rather that the interviewees act almost as if the flowers are...listening to them.
Interesting. Very interesting.

Vulpes seems to shift a little in his seat, Hura notices a subtle shift in the baseline human’s expression and asks, trying to be gentle about it, “Was there anything else that you wanted to tell me?”
“It’s just…” Vulpes hesitates, “I hope that whoever is doing this is caught.”
“Indeed, that would be the best outcome,” Hura says, “that the guilty party or parties are found and brought to the light of the Emperor’s Justice.”
Vulpes nods, and shifts a little in his seat, “... Yes Lord Angel, it would.”
Hura pauses, tilting his head a little to see if there was anything else that Vulpes was going to say, but the baseline human simply looks at him briefly before staring out a window.
This one seemed far less twitchy and jumpy then the last couple of people he’d interviewed. It was something that he noted down, unsure if it meant something or not. He notices one of Vuples’s legs looks different from the other and the man notices his gaze, “Ah- this is a prosthetic leg, I was in the Astra Militarum for a term of service. Ended up here after it ended. I was glad that Granny found me, and spoke with me. After that Mx. Nox spoke with me, and I’ve been a Guard at the Lady Governor's mansion. Who knows what would have happened to me if Granny hadn’t found me that first day I’d been left on this planet for my tour of duty being over.”
“It was fortuitous that you’d been found,” Hura says.
“Yeah,” Vulpes says, “So I sometimes help Granny out with things, as a favor for likely saving my life.”
Then his eyes go wide and he ducks his head, as if he had said something he hadn’t meant to. Hura spots that and his eyes narrow slightly. Tilting his head a little as he read the other’s body language, which had grown nervous, and even more so the longer it took for Hura to say something.
“What do you mean by doing favors for ‘granny’?” Hura asks lightly.
“Oh y-y’know,” The man says, stuttering a little, eyes flickering to his helmet and away, “Lifting and moving heavy things. Listening to Granny’s stories.”
“And why are you so nervous about admitting to helping ‘Granny’ with these things?” Hura asks.
“Granny prefers not to be known as requestin’ favors.” Vulpes says nervously. “Granny doesn’t want to leave the gardens, or the estate.”
“And why would that happen if this ‘granny’ requested help occasionally?” Hura asks.
“Because the Lady Governor doesn’t like Granny for some reason,” Vulpes says with a helpless shrug, “Is trying to get rid of Granny- which is a cryin’ shame. Granny is wonderful and helps the Garnes flourish. I don’t think they’d be doing half as good in the hands of another.”
“I see,” Hura hums, “As the Lady Governor of this planet, why can’t she just fire Granny?”
Vulpes looks at him and away, shifting in his seat a little, “The guv’nor tried, and it didn’t seem to go too well. So The Lady had to hire her back. Or so I’ve been told. I wasn’t here when that whole mess happened, just told about it in bits and pieces.”
“... That’s interesting,” Hura says, “What do you mean by ‘not going too well’.”
“... I- I…” Vulpes shifts, “This planet’s population tend to be rather suspicious folks, and don’t like change too well. Granny Maiya has been a staple of this estate for a long time, so for the peace she has to stay on. Or so I’ve been told.”
“Hm…” Hura says in response.
Whatever he’s been told, members of the Astra Militarum, and those rare folks who survive their term of service are hard to spook and cause anxiety like this. So whatever happened, or whatever this man has been told must be… interesting enough to spook him so badly.
“You should talk t’granny when you have a chance to, Lord Angel,” Vulpes says, not looking at Hura. “But you should also be polite about it, Sir.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Hura says. “Thank you Vulpes.”
“Don’t mention it, sir.” Vulpes says, intensely. Hura notices the way the other’s hands seem to be shaking a little.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Hura replies.
Hura has several more people on his list to speak with, and Granny Maiya is on the list, at the bottom of it. He notes to himself to move her up on the list. This murder mystery thing is becoming more fascinating, and annoying as time goes on.
Hura needs to find out the motives of the people in this place, and figure out who’s involved and in what ways. Who’s guilty and who isn’t guilty. He puts an asterisk next to Vulpes names- sending a message to Darsas to investigate him and his career with the Astra Militarum.
As he muses on what he’s learned so far, he heads to the next room with another servant of the Lady Governor, one of her cooks. Lillium Sol, he sees her setting next to a vase of flowers.
The flowers consist of six petal-like segments, which may form the shape of a trumpet, with more or less elongated tubes. The flowers are white in color with yellow stamen, the flowers droop down a little, and this flower has long, narrow leaves that cover a single stem.
At the top, they divide into three to seven stems, each with a single bud. Open flowers are six-pointed, white and trumpet-shaped. Lillium Sol turns towards him, hearing the door open and she nods to him.
“Hello Lord Angel,” She says with a polite bow of her head.
Hura sees the way she seems to be nervous, and tries his best not to Loom over her so much. He asks her to tell him the when, where, what, how, who, why, and alibis that she has for the time and place of the deaths occurred
She seems nervous, and occasionally stutters or stammers, but the stories she tells him match up with what she has told the Arbites and other people involved in searching for the killer, or killers.

Final fantasy 7 story prompts 8:
1. Beach episode. Cloud has a starfish in his hair as he teaches Denzel to surf (and no one tells him), Barret flexes and shows off the mermaid-tail sand mound Marlene made for him, Vincet is dragged out from under his umbrella to do something dumb, and while he weakly protests, he has a smile on his lips, everyone plays volleyball at somepoint, and so many pictures were taken. It was a good day.
2. Denzel and Marlene accidently travel to a parallel world and decide to be heroes too.
3. Cloud yelling Denzels full adopted name and telling him he's sooooo grounded. He didn't realize he was on speaker phone.
4. Au where Vincent goes insane and becomes the bad guy in attempt to revive Lucrecia, and the events with Janova never happen. Don't worry. It comes in later. (If I ever get around to this fic) Sephiroth and Zack form their own party to defeat him. Cloud dies instead of Aerith
5. The remaining SOLDIERS idolize Cloud and crew. AKA A fic of SOLDIERS fangirling over AVALANCHE.
6. Cloud blackmails Reno for stories about Zack. He manages to track down Sheriken and Genesis for more stories and won't leave them alone until they give him more. This eventually leads him to Kunsel, who initiates a info trade.
7. Cloud sings to himself when he thinks he's alone
8. Sephiroth becomes the God of destruction and Cloud becomes the God of disaster. Their battles are legendary.
9. Cloud is immortal and keeps going to theaters and seeing plays of MeteorFall. He gets low key pissed when they ship him with other people though.
10. Cloud stops using Clim.Hazzard after he lost control of it and legitimately caused a natural disaster.
11. Cloud is raised by dragons instead of people.
12. Cloud repeatedly breaks into Sephiroths office and leaves little hints about his true mom and how to find her and Vincent, as well as warnings about the Janova project.
13. Cloud finds out he's a clone and the real Cloud died in a mako tube in the Shinra mansion. He doesn't tell anyone because wtf is he even supposed to say. Now he feels guilty for stealing the original Clouds identity and is having a massive existential crisis.
14. "Don't you dare." Sephiroth glared at the offending blond, whose hand was hovering just over the glass vase in his office.
The blond snapped his head around to face Sephiroth.
"This would be the forth time this week. I can't keep replacing them."
Cloud kept his mako blue eyes locked on the generals cat-slitted green ones, and he batted the vase onto the floor. He let out a smug, "Meow." Before trotting out of Sephiroths office like he owned the place. The silverette stared at the shattered glass for a moment before letting out a full-bodied sigh. Mabey he shouldn't have volunteered to watch him after all.
15. Cloud curses in front of Denzel so of course Denzel winds up using that same curse word. Tifa winds up scolding them both

~
It’s a dreary day.
The sun is out. The clouds are nowhere to be found. Birds are singing. A soft spring breeze came and went. The sun lit courtyard is filled with flowers that seemed to sway and dance along to the wind and the song of spring.
A beautiful day,
But it doesn’t match the dreary atmosphere.
In the same place, at the same time, there were two figures occupying opposite ends of the courtyard. One was donning a brilliant white outfit, the sleeves, long and thin, extended passed the hands by a few good centimeters. They were sat on an old worn bench. The once polished wood was now dull and splintering, the cracking and moaning of the joints reminded of its old age. Within the hand, lost within the fabric, held a brush pressed to canvas. The figure wore a dull, tired expression. Their face was long and decorated with dark circles and droopy eyes. The strokes were long, slow and dragging. The strokes of white contrast the green dabbles on the canvas.
The other figure, also in a brilliant white, was crouched before a bed of flowers. His knees were pulled into his chest as his cheek rested on his knees for support. An arm was loosely slung over his feet while the other plucked the brown and bruised white flowers. His expression was also long and gloomy. His lips were in a permanent frown as dark circles rested neatly under his eyes.
It’s been a long day despite the day barely beginning. The sun has yet to reached its prime.
A cool yet particularly strong breeze swept through the courtyard and caused the flowers to lean and rustle harshly. The dripping white paint was caught by the wind from the brush and splattered to the concrete bricks below. The cool breeze swept through the two figure’s faces sweeping up their hair and drying out their eyes. Both their heads jolted up from the sudden chill, now more awake and sober than their previously drowsy state. They two stood up abruptly and made eye contact with each other. Both heads tilt slightly as two shy hands come up in a small wave. Each person finally realized that they were not alone in the courtyard and the other shared the space with them.
The boy walked forward with a toothy smile showing off his pearly whites that was decorated with braces.
“Hi,” he breathed out sheepishly. “I’m Jeongin.”
“Y/N,” you smiled. Both your cheeks were lightly dusted pink, flustered from not realizing the other was there. Your eyes traveled to his clenched hand and his to your canvas.
“What do you have there?” you both inquired simultaneously, prompting you both to erupt in small giggles.
“White poppies,” you both stated in unison, smiling at each other.
~
Ever since that encounter in the courtyard, you both had become more aware of how you both existed in the same place without realization. Now, you both were content just being in each other’s company. Conversations were minimal and rare, but every single little conversation, every single little word etched themselves in each other’s hearts.
Jeongin and you were gathered around a table seated opposite of each other. Jeongin had a lovely lavender vase before him. His delicate hands expertly arranged the flowers to be just right, constantly rotating the vase to ensure every single petal, bud and leaf were in the right place.
You were in the seat opposite of him, with a canvas on an easel stood beside you. Various tubes of acrylics and several brushes of different lengths and sizes were scattered throughout the table before you. Within one hand, hooked on your thumb and supported your fingers as a wooden palette as colorful and vibrant as the gardens of flowers outside. Your other hand held a brush and delicately brushing on strokes of brilliant flowers.
“Jeongin, what is your dream?” you asked. Your soft voice prompted the boy to temporarily pause what he was doing to gaze at you.
“I’ll tell you if you tell me yours,” Jeongin said softly, smiling at you.
You smiled in return. After making brief eye contact, you nodded softly in agreement.
“I want to be a painter, an artist. I want to express my colors on canvas,” you whispered out. Despite the hushed tone, your voice was filled with passion of your desires. Jeongin smiled and chuckled at your passion. It was inspiring whenever you talked about your passions.
“I want to be a florist,” Jeongin responded. “I believe you can pour out an entire heartfelt message in a bouquet of flowers. Each flower has its own meaning and stories. In a perfect combination, you can tell your colorful stories.”
Yours dreams were no stranger. Many of their conversations revolve around their dreams. No matter how many times it’s said, each seemed more beautiful the more it’s repeated and expressed. Jeongin stood with the delicate glass vase within his hands, finished off with a delicate yellow ribbon. His fingers laid the final touches and adjustments. Jeongin walked over to the windowsill and left the vase of brilliant, vibrant purple poppies by the slightly ajar window.
“It’s late,” Jeongin turned and smiled fondly. “Let’s go call it a night.”
“Ok,” you nodded, rinsing your brush in your jar of water as you take a nice long look at your recreation of Jeongin’s vase of flowers.
So what are your dreams?
Are dreams a longing for something you can never grasp? Is it something that lingers throughout a lifetime? Or something that can be easily crumbled and tossed aside? Are dreams achievable or is it only for sleeping?
~
It’s barely midday. The sun was slowly inching towards its prime as the rays shone relentlessly. The wispy rare clouds that come and go provide some relief from the bright rays. The cool breezes perfectly balances out the warmth of the sun. Jeongin and you were sitting in a patch of blooming Dogwoods.
“Have you taken them yet?” Jeongin asked softly, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear delicately braiding it.
You lightly groaned. “No, I forgot. We should match so we don’t forget.”
“Alright,” Jeongin chuckled softly. He delicately plucked a blooming white flower. It had several white thin petals surrounding the yellow pollen core in many layers. Jeongin’s fingers comb through your hair, flattening loose strands and detangle the strands. He expertly wove smaller strands over and under each other as he inserted the stem of the dogwood and braided it in one after another. Satisfied with the braided flower clown that created, “Beautiful.”
Your cheeks brightened up as a warmth flushed through your body. You quickly turned to face him as you sat on your knees. You leaned forward resting your hands on your knees as support. Jeongin smiled fondly as he unrolled his sleeves, letting the long fabric cascade down.
“Do you think we could ever leave together?” you whispered softly.
“Maybe,” Jeongin’s voice was soft, but it held a distasteful bitterness where the pair knew that such a thing was not possible.
“Do you think we’ll be able to reach our dreams?”
As both pairs of glimmering eyes met, it was as if the world stopped around them as sparks erupt from within.
“Yes,” Jeongin paused. “But not in the way you expect.”
What is your dream?
You smiled fondly at the boy before you, and he you. You brought your hands up to cup his cheeks within your sweater paws. A soft breeze came by, fluttering both your hairs and rustled the flowers setting the mood. Their hearts fluttered in unison as their breaths mingled. You slowly leaned forward as his eyes trailed down to your lips. Your lips softly met and molded together. It was magical as if it was a beautiful spring day, flowers bloom, many birds singing the sweet song of spring, and bees buzzing from flower to flower for a harvest in the later seasons.
In that moment of time and intimacy, a thought went through both your minds, ‘you are my new dream.’
~
Since then, you’ve both been inseparable. It was as if you both were attached by the hip. You were always seated together with arms linked no matter that you did whether you were painting, Jeongin was trimming flowers or even eating. The only thing the young lovers were barred from was sharing the same bed, but that didn’t deter them from their blossoming relationship.
“Innie, can you help me with still life realism?” you asked politely as you set up your canvas and easel in the center of the courtyard, using the sun as natural light. Jeongin nodded as a bright idea came into mind. He always enjoys delicately putting together bouquets and flower decorations for you and in return, you would capture the bouquets in a still art as you both presented each other with them as heartfelt gifts.
Smiling softly to himself, he held a small rounded glass jar, similar to a fish bowl, and headed towards the fountain in the center. Holding the glass under the cascading waters of the fountain, letting the bowl fill up halfway. He used his sleeve to wipe off the stray droplets on the sides of the glass. He returned back to you and delicately placed the bowl at the center of the worn bench. Jeongin stepped away momentarily to the small man made pond and rolled up his long sleeves. Smiling brightly as his eyes scoped out the one flower in its prime: full bloom and vibrant colors. Dipping his fingers into the cool liquid he reached under the flower between the stem and gently picked up the delicate flower. Returning back to where you were, he separated the stem and gently floated the beautiful vibrant pink lotus into the bowl, letting the lingering water drip from his fingers onto the petals of the lotus. Each droplet perfectly refracted the sun’s rays making it seem as if it’s glimmering.
Your face soured a bit seeing Jeongin’s lackluster display. Jeongin turned towards you with a prideful smile expecting your reaction. You forced out a smile, not trying to hurt his feelings. Jeongin’s smile faltered slightly as worry flashed in his eyes.
“What?” Jeongin asked. “Do you not… like it?”
“No… no, it isn’t like that,” you stuttered, trying to collect and piece your words carefully. “It’s just that… I expected more?”
“Is this not enough? A lotus in full bloom floating on water with droplets reflecting off the sunlight?” his words were pained as he stated, offended.
“I wanted something beautiful and vibrant,” you stated firmly as your eyebrows furrowed. “Something, perhaps like a bouquet of impatiens-”
“This isn’t beautiful and vibrant enough? The lotus is in full bloom. Are you so blind that you can not see the vibrant hue of the pink?” Jeongin spat, his gaze hardened at you.
“It’s too simplistic!” you snapped, throwing up your hands. Your paintbrush fell to the ground. The atmosphere was so tense and silent, you both can hear the paintbrush clatter almost deafeningly loud. “I don’t need simplicity. I need a challenge. I need several colors, textures and shapes. Give me a bouquet of impatiens, pink petunias or even purple petunias!”
“Might as well add sweet briars to it, yea?” Jeongin returned sarcastically through clenched teeth. Despite his harsh tone, his eyes showed pain. “Why can’t you just appreciate what I’ve given you?”
“Why can’t you appreciate my art? You’re undermining me aren’t you? You think I lack the skill so you give me a simple flower?”
Jeongin scoffed, turning away and rolling your eyes prior to raising a finger up to you. “Are you even listening to yourself? That’s absolutely ridiculous. Well two can play at this game,” Jeongin tilted his head and blew his fringe out of his eyes as his gaze darkened. “Maybe you’re undermining me by not appreciating my art. Sometimes less is more! You are blind to beauty!”
“You’re kidding, right? You’re absolutely fucking kidding me? Art is vibrant and colorful! Art is an expression of color!”
“Art is more than fucking color!” Jeongin growled, stomping towards you. “Art is an expression of self! There is meaning behind each object. Art is about expressing your feelings and using underlying meanings to tell your story!”
Your eyebrows furrowed as your nose scrunched up. Rage bubbled within you as you clenched your fists. Your breathing became more labored as you wracked your brain to form words, but it was blinded by rage. Seeing red, you shoved Jeongin roughly backwards. Jeongin stumbled over his feet as his arms flailed trying to catch his balance, accidentally knocking over the lotus bowl. The glass broke and shattered on the concrete bricks as water spilled everywhere and the lotus rolled and gathered dirt.
Jeongin’s eyes widened at the fallen flower and felt as if he was the one who broke and shattered. Enraged as well, his nose scrunched up and his upper lip twitched as he stomped forward grabbing at your canvas and angrily tossed it towards the ground. The canvas bounced pathetically as the wood splintered and broke upon impact. The fabric tore as the wood finally separated.
You felt your overflowing dam within you on the verge of bursting as tears welled up as your hands found their way to the fabric of Jeongin’s shirt. Jeongin’s hands shot up to grasp at yours to in retaliation. You both were hurting. You both knew your argument was petty and pointless, but your were young and naive. Too stubborn to stand down, but not wanting to hurt the other. So your fight elevated to a series of pushing and pulling as your both stumbled over each other’s feet as both your dams erupted. With one particular push from Jeongin and you pulling him down as you stumbled losing your balance, you both crashed into your easel. The wood frame knocked over as your open jar of paint bounced and spilled into the garden of flowers. The vibrant splash the colors dyed the once white poppies to a menacing red.
You both were sobbing as words that wish to be spoken latched themselves in your throats causing you both to choke on your sobs as you continued your pathetic fight of pushing and pulling. Your heart palpitated in your chest as it felt like you were inhaling pins and needles. Your stomach churned as your hands and feet shook, a sharp stinging pain began growing in your head. Two men in white interfered and tried to separate the two of you. With the forceful separation despite the ongoing fight, you both still reached for each other, the tips of your fingers barely within reach. With a simultaneous cry of each other’s names, the doors shut as you both were pulled into opposite buildings.
Everything hurt. You were curled up into a ball under the warmth of your sheets. The pain in your chest felt heavy and unbearable. You tried to swallow the lump in your throat as you tried to will away the nausea. Despite all this, despite all the tears, the pounding in your head was unbearable. It felt as if it was eating away at you devouring you whole with no hope of mercy. You cracked your eyes a bit, wincing at the bright light. The bright unforgiving light of the sun coming in through the window worsened your migraine. Your eyes screwed shut as you pulled the sheet over your head as you fell unconscious due to the unbearable pain, the last thing you saw was the daylilies in full bloom swaying in the wind.
~
It’s a dreary day. Beautiful, yet dreary.
The sun is out, the clouds are nowhere to be found, birds are singing as a gentle breeze completed the setting. A cool yet particularly strong breeze swept through the courtyard and caused the flowers to lean and rustle harshly. The two figures in the courtyard stood abruptly due to the sudden chill.
The boy walked forward with a small, bright smile showing off his braces and a shy wave.
“Hi,” he breathed out sheepishly. “I’m Jeongin.”
“Y/N,” you smiled.

Beyond Words (I)
A Not So Beautiful Goodbye
Pairing: Jongdae (EXO Chen) x Reader
Genre: Jongdae Poet AU, angst, quartet?
Summary: A poet reminiscences about his old lover and their relationship in his new anthology, reminding himself of the importance of sincerity, and that love words are just as important spoken aloud as they are printed on paper.
PART 1 PART 2 PART 3
AUTHOR’S NOTE: since Jongdae’s Barista AU has been doing so well, I decided to switch the roles, so that Jongdae is now the poet. Also, April and a Flower is art in its purest form. So excited for Dear My Dear
Word Count: 4169
Jongdae walked out of his publisher’s office, his brand new book clutched by his side. His knuckles turning white with the force of his grip on the hardback copy - the very first printed one.
His fingers felt the rough green material cover, focusing on its imperfections. The book felt heavier than it was; rougher. He could feel the effort with which he bled ink into paper, and he could hear the clicking of the computer keys like a ghost of an echo in his ears. This was the heaviest book he had written. Not because physical weight, nor the number of pages that had ended up in the final print. No, it was a different type of weight. The weight of a heavy heart; crushing his chest, beating despite the damage. It was the weight of emotional baggage he had spilled- the printing ink might as well have been made out of his tears
I spilled all my love for you
As ink on paper
How could I forget
To fill you up first.
Yes, this anthology was born of pain, and regret; and somewhat bitterly, he thought it was best one he had ever written. It was heavy, and so damn hard to write he had spent many a sleepless night staring at the lined paper of his notepad, locked away in his office. Alone.
It had been a long time since Jongdae had been this hollow, a cavern carved out of his chest, the inflamed tissue now a home for despair rather than a heart.
He had only himself to blame. Jongdae did not shy away from admitting his wrongs. The least he could do was admit them and leave behind any self-pity festering in his broken heart like an infection.
Instead he did what he knew how to do best; he spilled all his sorrows and apologies as ink onto paper.
Ironically, that ability, this dysfunctional coping mechanism, was the very reason he was in the predicament in the first place.
Your love for me was like an inkwell; never drying
And I,
I was like a pen,
Which drew from you forever.
I did not notice,
How you dried up in silence,
Blinded by the illusion of your infinity.
Sometimes the best things in your life; the best people, leave. Sometimes you leave them. It is all a vicious cycle of life. A part of life he had recently became intimate with. Nothing lasts forever. All is finite. All good things must come to an end.
Still Jongdae’s biggest regret of all, was the fact you didn’t have to be finite.
If only he had paid more attention to you, instead of drowning in ink and pretty words, he could have continued on. With you by his side.
He had left the building of his publishing company, glancing up at the sky. The heavens were heavy this morning, overcast with clouds so dark and looming day had taken on the look of night. There was no rain yet, but Jongdae was sure that at some point the clouds would be unable to hold their weight, and the rain would come in a violent storm. Like any other summer.
The inkwell is empty and when the pen immerses
It comes back dry,
Leaving the words I wanted to write,
To remain a whim.
The ride back to his apartment was quiet, the sky still ominous, but Jongdae knew that the calmness, and the stillness were bad omens. The calm before the storm. The only question that bugged him was when the sky would open, pouring its tears onto the ground from the sky in a hail of bullets.
He wondered how loud the heavens would roar as it happened. Would it feel as if the windows were shaking? Would he be able to feel it in his bones, despite tucking himself away in his apartment?
Would it shake him the same way you leaving him did?
He doubted that- nature didn’t have the same kind of power. A storm was not a woman; although it was eerily similar in its magnitude.
He flicked through the anthology, finally taking the time to appreciate the work and effort put into its creation. The cream coloured pages stared at him with hundreds of ink eyes. Their looks were accusing, and among the black letters, he saw you. Your eyes, clear and sparkling in the way they looked at you, your smile bright. He reminisced the adoration with which he looked at you those the last few years, eyes wide and sparkling at everything you did. The corners of his lips quirked upwards in a cat-like smile at the happy memories.
Finally, after the present settled over him again, pulling him out of the happy daydream, his smile fell, and the light feeling in his chest, and the way his heart beat a little faster at the memory of your soft lips against his left him too. It left him cold and aching despite being hidden away safely within his home, His heart nestled safely in in his chest, protected by the cage of his ribs.
Light brown eyes moved to look out the window, the world outside brightened by flashes of lightning. On the table before him, the vase of red tulips was wilting, the petals falling gracelessly against the windowsill, no longer their vibrant red, but rather a burgundy colour fading into brown.
Like flowers on the windowsill,
I forgot that unlike the ones growing wild in meadows,
The rain shall not come water you,
And that dew shall not condense on you like the pearls,
Which I never gave you.
You sat in your old room, surveying its blank walls. When you moved out, your parents took down all the posters, and drawings you stuck on the pastel green paint. It was the decision you made at thirteen, and the decision you cursed all your Uni years. A decision you had accepted over time. Now you found the colour soothing and familiar, and in a world where you were always moving, you were glad for the little comfort it brought you. It was still your room.
Now, with the turn of events, you moved back, and you were ready to reclaim your space; the tubes and frames at your feet were the beginning.
One photo was staring at you, of you, a little younger, smiling along with the man beside you. You were in a meadow filled with wild flowers you had frequented with you mother when you were little. You remembered the raspberry bushes you used to pick fruit from, and you remember making flower crowns from the chamomile growing there.
You had taken that man there. Showed him all your favourite things; the meadow, the raspberry bushes, the sketchbook filled with gouache paintings. He showed you the ink splattered notebooks and the small coffee shop at the end of the street.
But the sunny days were over. The storm raged outside, thunder clashing in the darkness. And the raspberry bushes were gone too, and concrete blocks had taken their place.
And the man no longer showed you the world with ink stained fingers either.
But he had not showed you anything for a long time now, even before you left your shared apartment. So you left him. It had felt like he had left you a long time before you did.
Your mother’s voice broke you from your musings, and you left your room surprised to see her standing in the corridor with a brown package. She handed it to you wordlessly and disappeared into the kitchen. The look she gave you was piercing, and there was a certain amount of concern floating behind her soft eyes. You tightened the grip on the flimsy paper that wrapped around the object, and you could already feel that it was book.
For a moment you didn’t understand why it came; you certainly didn’t order one, but the look in your mothers eyes was enough to tell you who it was from.
“So he did finish.” You murmured, hands tearing at the paper in desperation, giving way to the soft green of the cover.
Flowers in April
The golden lettering was delicate and beautiful, and you wondered why he mailed it to you. You were no longer together. You walked out months ago. You were moving on.
Opening the book, your attention was caught by the handwritten note on the front page, the black pen standing in stark contrast against the off-white paper.
“To my muse.
I thought it would only be fair to give this to you, after all you had suffered because of it. You should at least know why you were suffering.
I’m sorry for all my shortcomings.
- Jongdae”
Your eyes followed the trail of the pen, his handwriting familiar from the little notes he used to leave for you, and the shopping lists that were stuck to your fridge.
The ache of your heart was familiar too, familiar from all the nights he ignored you, and every time you sat at the dinner table alone with only the tv to keep you company. The heart in your chest ached for your loneliness, but it also ached for the home that was long gone, the home you did not wish to return to and the man who occupied it now. This time, he was the one eating dinner at the empty table, sleeping in bed alone and you had no pity for him left.
But you are not a flower,
You were a woman.
You are a woman.
And I,
was not a pen,
But a man.
Jongdae listened to the thunder raging outside, shaking his windows, turning his day into night with anger.
That was one of the ways You and the storm were different. You did not shout, you were not like the storm, shaking the windows in their frames and destroying things in the wake of your rage. You had left quietly, given back the keys to your shared home, and before he could protest, make an excuse for his absence, you had left without a word, leaving no trace behind but the cracks in his heart.
You came back from work, ready to order takeaway and watch films with your boyfriend. The weariness in your bones weighed you down as you made your way up the stairs, wanting nothing more than to climb under a blanket in the living room, wrapped in Jongdae’s arms.
The door opened, and you caught the sight of him at the kitchen counter, his phone in hand, calling someone.
“Jongdae, do you want pizza?” You asked, looking up at the leaflet you had stuck on the fridge. You turned to face him, weariness leaving your bones at the hope of spending the evening in peace. The lightness does not last long, and he crushes it in his hands, unknowingly, without a thought.
“I’m busy.” The words leave you heavy. You know them too well now it seems. Jongdae had been like this for a while, more preoccupied with phone calls and writing than sparing you a moment. Just like you, he seems tired, but for a different reason. One you do not know, and one is not willing to share.
“What about watching a film later?” You try again, hoping. Being foolish. Deep down you know the answer already, feel the rejection before it comes. Your heart has been breaking recently. The cracks started growing deeper, and you don’t know how to mend them.
“I don’t know.” He tells you, his soft voice cold and indifferent, eyes not looking at you when he speaks, and with another crack, you realise he hadn’t looked at you since you arrived.
PRESENT
You had walked out of your office, your hands now empty as you left your portfolio and necessary documents with the client. You had finalised the designs this week and everything was ready for editing.
You were given the task of illustrating a reprint of a popular book series recently, and you had been very proud of your work. So far it was one of the biggest projects you have done. It seemed you were riding the lucky wave. Your boss had given you a slight raise as you moved to a better position at the company. This project had been a success, and the company was contracted for another project, and the clients had requested you.
It was time to celebrate.
You had invited your friends out for a few drinks later that night.
The bar had a chic vibe to it. Everything was made of sleek wood and toned down colours, coupled with the dim lighting and pretty chandeliers, it was a perfect place for you to unwind and gloat your success. You didn’t get to do it every day.
You were sipping on you third cocktail, your three friends laughing at some work gossip. It had been a pleasant night so far. That is, until you caught the eyes of Jongdae’s publisher. The woman had averted her eyes when she saw you looking, but you could still make out the displeased look on her face, and the sour curl of her red lips.
The black dress she was wearing was fancy. Fancier than what you wore, but it did not bother you. not until your eyes found the one person you hoped not to see that night.
It was not that you hated him. It was not that you loathed him. It was that you resented him. For how he had treated you; spent the last months of your relationship ignoring you. As if you didn’t live right there with him. As if you didn’t share his bed. As if you were not irrevocably in love with him.
Your heart broke all over again, seeing him here, with the beautiful woman opposite him, when he had said he was too busy to come here with you.
His eyes caught yours. Their soft brown drawing you in with their warmth. He was still familiar, he still looked too much like home to you. And in your slightly intoxicated state, you saw the regret and remorse bubbling behind the kaleidoscope of browns in his irises. Or maybe you just wished to see it.
You didn’t want to find out.
“He’s here.” You turned to your friends, and the moment they realised who you were talking about, they had made their way to the bar.
“Can we get a tequila?” Your friend asked, bringing over a whole bottle of the alcohol, along with four shot glasses.
“What’s that for?” You asked, surveying the glass wearily.
“For the fun of it.” She told you, the cheeky smile that formed on her lips matched the flame in her eyes.
“You are beautiful. Never forget that.” She told you as you took your first shot.
Only when I had lost you, I realised
That you, like an inkwell
Needed to be filled.
And like a flower,
Needed to be watered;
With words of love,
Looks of awe,
With warmth.
“I’m eating with the editors.” Jongdae told you as he fixed his tie in the hallway mirror, barely sparing you a glance into the kitchen. You had spent the last hour making his favourite, hoping against hope he would stay for dinner. Turned out you were trying in vain.
“I thought we could eat together.” You told him, your voice small, barely above a whisper as the hope fuelled elation left your body.
“Not today.” Jongdae said, his voice softer, sounding resigned as his shoulders hunched a little. He had been feeling tired lately, bored. For now, he wanted to leave. Get out of the familiar four walls, breathe in some fresh air.
Dinner with the editors was a good reason to leave. Besides, he was in the process of writing his third anthology, and it was an important meeting he had to attend. Jongdae needed everything to go smoothly.
His hands fell to his sides when he stopped fixing his tie, and you barely heard the quiet goodbye that left his lips. Or maybe you just imagined he said it. Lately, you couldn’t figure out which it was.
Tears burned the back of your eyes, but you didn’t let any spill. Outside, Jongdae had put his head in his hands breathing deeply, before getting in the car and driving away.
You felt him climb into bed late in the night, but he never moved closer. He used to brush your hair back and kiss your forehead before falling asleep, but now he stayed far away, and you had been colder in your bed with him than you would feel with a stranger.
And your heart broke.
PRESENT
Jongdae found your form in between the tables, eyes glued to the side of your face, feeling more like a spectre than a man. His heart roared in his chest, beating against his ribs the way an animal beat at the bars of their cage. The way it had not done in months. For a moment, the moment that lasted a split second when your eyes met, he felt more alive than the last few months.
His anthology had been a success, and he had come in to celebrate that. Still, the biggest celebration, better than wine and better than gin, was the sight of you.
His publisher had seen it, the way his eyes fell on you, again and again. Jongdae, for the life of him, could not understand the way her lips curled when she caught your eyes. He was too preoccupied with stealing glances your way to pay attention to her.
Everything about you called to him, reminding him of his love for you. Reviving the passion you had shared, setting his whole body aflame. The sight of you flowed over him like water, cold and refreshing. He was awake. For the first time in forever he felt lucid.
“Well done Jongdae. Your anthology had just become a bestseller.” His publisher told him, reaching over the table to hold his hand. He brought it back instantly as if it burned.
Over the course of the last months he had figured out what he done wrong. He had admitted his shortcomings. And he had promised himself to be better, for you. He was not going to ruin it tonight.
Sitting among your friends, you were glowing. Dressed in your best dress, eyes sparkling as laughter bubbled from your chest. It was a warming sight, like watching flowers unravelling in the spring. And his heart wretched when he realised, he wasn’t the reason for your joy any longer.
Now, you, like a wildflower,
Are experiencing spring again,
After a harsh winter.
You are spreading your petals,
And green leaves.
And I, like a fool,
Stare at the empty windowsill,
Not seeing you.
I cannot water you anymore,
And pearls, like dew
I cannot give you.
He watched you stand up and make your way to the exit, and without a moment of hesitation, he was out of his chair too, making a bee line to you, heart pounding at the idea of you.
He caught you by the elbow as you turned away from the bar.
“Jongdae.” You warned him, voice low as you stared right into his eyes. Jongdae’s eyes were soft when he looked at you, and you could make out their glassy sheen of tears in the darkness.
“I know what I did wrong.” He told you, sincerity lacing his voice, thick with remorse and deeper than usual. You could feel the desperation rolling off of him like waves.
He was wearing a nice suit today. A deep grey with a bluish tinge, and a white button up underneath. His fringe was parted, exposing his forehead and the straight brows that furrowed as he looked into your eyes, searching for something. Whatever it was; forgiveness or hate, he didn’t find it.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered.
“That is how I find out?” You spat. He knew you were talking about the anthology.
“You didn’t call.” You accuse him, poking a finger against his chest, and he lets you.
“I wrote it.” He tells you, silently begging for you to understand. But you won’t. Not this time. You had told him already; tell me what happened, tell me why you didn’t talk to me.
Instead, he wrote an anthology, spilling all of it on paper. Just like he always did. Just like you suspected he always would. And you had grown tired of that. He spilled all his emotions onto paper, dressed hem up in pretty words and rhymes. Devoted his time into doing so. By doing that he left you alone, and as he spilled all the love he had for you somewhere else, you were left to give him your love. Over the last months of yoir relationship, all the little acts of love had ceased to exist. There was no notes left on the fridge, there was no flowers on the vase on the table.
“You did.” You tell him, disappointment rolling off your tongue, leaving a bitter taste in your mouth.
The whole world now knew you broke his heart. The whole world knew you left him without a word. But did the world know how he had left you, months before you left him? How you had sat at dinner alone and slept alone. Did they know that? Did Jongdae tell them that? Did he write about his faults?
You didn’t know, and you didn’t know if you wanted to find out.
“Y/N.” He starts, but there is nothing that comes out of his mouth, and you shake your head. Desperately wanting him to understand. Because despite everything, you still love him, but you cannot live like this, like a stranger that shares his bed at night.
“I don’t think you figured it out quite yet.” You tell him when he stays silent, not knowing what to say. You find it amusing. A poet lost for words.
“I didn’t pay attention.” He confesses, looking defeated.
“I locked myself away and tried to run from you.” He tells you, walking closer, his wide eyes looking straight into your own.
“I was too proud to say something was wrong. Too proud to admit that I was doing something wrong.” He admitted, hands balled into fists. For a moment he averts his gaze, looking everywhere but you, before bringing it back to you, eyes red with unshed tears, shoulders shaking with frustration.
“I wasn’t sincere. I should have told you then, that I love you, instead of keeping it to myself. I thought you knew, but no one can read minds.”
“I’m sorry.” He tells you, and you know he is apologising for his actions. All but the writing. You could see the ink stains on his fingers even now. You had accepted him writing, locking himself up for a week and coming out a dying man. You have accepted that. But you have not accepted the way he treated you then, and you were not going to accept ever again.
“I’m not ready to accept your apology.” You tell him, voice even, and you seem calm as he looks at you with the hopeful spark fading from his eyes.
“Why didn’t you just,” You begin, searching for the right words, “Why didn’t you tell me then?” You finally ask, referring to the poems in the anthology. Love poems- all directed at you, written from the very beginning of your relationship.
“I didn’t know how.” He admits, wrapping his arms around you, burying his nose in your hair.
“You should have done this earlier.” You tell him, hugging him back, feeling like you have come back home for the first time in months.
“I know.” He whispers, caressing your hair, bringing you closer by the shoulders, until he envelops you.
“I know.” He mumbles again, and you listen to his heart beating out of his chest.
You move away, letting him go, before giving him one last look.
“I’m glad you know. Goodbye Jongdae.” You tell him, your voice soft, without any hint of malice. You seem content. You feel content. This was you leaving on your own terms. You loved him. of course you loved him. Sometimes though, you think, love is not enough. It does not keep you warm at night, or less lonely. Sometimes love is not given equally as it should. So you leave, walk away without turning back, knowing now where it was that he had spilled all his love- into words. You thought, that maybe, just maybe- Jongdae loved his words more than he loved you.
Jongdae followed your retreating figure walking back to your friends, glowing like the sun. As he was left in the dark night outside the bar, alone.
I’ve lost my privilege to love you
I can only apologize to you,
For being winter,
When I should have been endless spring;
How you were,
My infinite happiness.
- The Beautiful goodbye I could not give you.

*waves* Hoiya! @lunarcrown came up with this awesome venomcup au, and I just had to write something for it! Now I don’t know all the details to this AU, and I’m definitely not the first to write about it (Which I actually just found out. In the middle of writing this drabble I thought “It might be a good idea to look at the HTTYD AU tag to get more info” and... like, you have to go check out @aleteia-ff ‘s fic right HERE. It’s amazing!) So yeah I’m sorry if I got stuff wrong etc, but I hope it’s enjoyable anyhow! <3
Unhinged
Astrid had long since stopped struggling. She wasn’t even sure she could at this point, since her arms were so numb from the men’s tight grips she could no longer feel her fingers. She figured that, the best way to get any information, was to remain silent and passive- for now. She would fight when the time called for it. However, she could still glare, and so she did.
After days of sitting immobile in a cell, it was a struggle to make her legs cooperate as she was dragged down the shadowy halls of the ship. She tried not to make eye contact with the men they passed, but if she did, she let her hatred spill into her gaze. If looks could kill, she was certain the entire army would be dead at this point.
The men laughed and made vulgar comments that made her squirm inwardly. They hadn’t made any moves to touch her- yet. She only hoped they knew better than to try. She might be weaponless, and weak, but she would use whatever means of defense she had. She had teeth, didn’t she? Then by Thor’s hammer she’d bite any man who came near her.
But for now, she hoped remaining cooperative would pay her back in the end. Maybe... maybe she’d stay alive long enough to get out. Long enough to...
to see Hiccup.
She watched and studied everything they passed, keeping her eyes peeled for any hints that he was or had been there. He must be. He had to be. She refused to think differently.
But three weeks. Three weeks. What could they do to one man in three weeks? She shuddered to think.
She’d only been in captivity for three days. Locked in a cell, with nothing but moldy bread and water to keep her alive. They hadn’t even given her a slop bucket.
Heathens. The Hooligans might be rough Vikings, but even they had the decency to give their prisoners a bucket to do their business in. Her hatred was threatening to brim over. She feared she might explode should she even lay eyes on Grimmel. The slimy bast-
Speaking of which.
They rounded a corner, and came to stop at a door. A man standing there didn’t even question their presence. All he had to do was see her, and he nodded, opening the door and letting them pass.
Grimmel stood, back to them, with his hands pressed against the top of a table. He had papers strewn about the table, along with empty vases and dirty glass cylinders. He didn’t turn upon their entrance, just continued staring at the papers.
“My dear Lady.” He spoke without looking up. “A pleasure.”
She gnawed on her gag, nearly choking on her withheld words. She reminded herself to stay silent, not that her words would make it past the gag. Yet still, what a coward to forcefully silence his prisoner. Did he fear what she had to say?
It was as if he had heard her thoughts. Good, then maybe he’d heard the few choice words she had bouncing about her head.
“Ungag her.” He finally turned around, a smug smile pasted on his pale face, his eyes unreadable. He leaned against the table.
As soon as the cloth left her mouth, she spat a wad of spit on the floor, right at Grimmel’s boots. The words came unbidden. “You snake.” She said darkly. She hated how far up she had to look to meet his eyes. It made her feel even more defenseless, a feeling she did not appreciate.
He snorted a laugh. “My lady! You underestimate me. I dare say I like to consider myself on a dargon status.”
She pondered a response, but decided against it. Rather, she heated her glare.
“Now.” He stood and walked to a shelf, where jars of purple liquid lined. She didn’t know how she hadn’t noticed them before. They were chiming as they softly hit against each other with each wave that hit the side of the ship. It was a little hum that played in the background, and accompanied with the purple glow from the bottles, it created an eerie atmosphere.
Grimmel plucked up one of these bottles and uncorked it, letting a fowl stench seep into the air. Astrid squinted, her eyes watering from the fumes. He coughed and recorked it, with a satisfied nod of his head. He continued. “I know why you came here.”
“Did you figure it out by yourself?” She muttered dryly. To her surprise, he laughed.
“Hiccup’s humor must be contagious.” He walked closer, still chuckling. “I wouldn’t have thought you, a warrior or Berk, to know the meaning of sarcasm.”
He fiddled with the bottle in his hands, unconcerned. “Hiccup and I are much alike. We use our brains to get what we want. And if his attitude isn’t the only thing you’ve caught on from him, then I’m sure this is no great recollection.”
It wasn’t. Hiccup’s mind was his weapon, and all of Berk knew it. It’s why they trusted him as much as they did. It’s why she’d believed him those many years ago.
Grimmel began tinkering with a tube of some kind, filling it with the bottle’s contents. And yet, in all of his pointless conversing, he had yet to tell her what had become of Hiccup. It was making her uneasy, for she felt that if he was dead, Grimmel would’ve used it against her by now. And yet, if he was still alive, wouldn’t Berk had gotten a ransom note long before now? Grimmel was just so unpredictable. She couldn't read his behavior, and it was irking her more then she could say.
Finally, he looked up, smiling widely without showing his teeth. It was creepy, and made her uncomfortable. She squirmed where she was held, but the soldiers didn’t loosen their grip.
Grimmel looked past her and nodded, presumably at the guard by the door. She heard the door creak open, followed by shuffled footsteps.
Someone stumbled past her, followed by two burly men. When she saw who it was, she lunged forward, forgetting she was still contained. The men jerked her back sharply, forcing a gasp from her lips. She stared, horrified, struck silent by the shape Hiccup was in. She was too shocked to feel any joy at the fact that “Thank Thor, he’s alive.” for all her mind could focus on was the cylinder fixed at his neck by a leather collar. Her eyes caught the slightest glimpse of glowing purple from within the glass.
He was leaning against the wall, his head wavering, his eyes unable to focus on anything. He was so pale... and, as best as she could see in the little candlelight, his skin carried a slight purple tint. His green iris’s were no longer the beautiful emerald color she knew, but a glowing purple. He blinked hazily, staring at nothing. She saw his legs shake.
“My new weapon!” Grimmel cackled and waved his arm at Hiccup, as if showing off a new toy. Hiccup only blinked, not responding at all. The soldiers stood a few paces back, next to the men who held Astrid, just watching in uncertainty, as if they weren’t sure what to do.
Grimmel walked to Hiccup and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, dragging him to stand across from Astrid. She involuntarily breathed his name. “Hiccup...” He made no response.
It was killing her to have him so close- close enough to touch- and yet, it wasn’t truly him. She hoped he’d say something, that he’d even look at her, but he did neither. He stared into space through half-lidded eyes, his body trembling. She feared he would tip over at any moment.
Grimmel slapped the back of Hiccup’s head. “Look at her.”
He did, eerily. He looked, but he didn’t see. His gaze went right through her.
“What have you done?” She hissed, raising her gaze to meet Grimmel’s. He grinned and settled a hand on Hiccup’s shoulder, as one would an old friend. He tossed the tube in his hand, which she now realized with horror, was the same cylinder like thing that was fixed at Hiccup’s throat.
“I’ve done what Stoick should’ve done years ago!” He cackled, and began plying the tube from the collar. Once off, he took the needle from it’s end and fixed it on the new one. “Hiccup makes a marvelous dragon killer, Astrid. It’s a shame you underestimated him.”
The tip of the needle disappeared into Hiccup’s neck.

Animal/Bio-Diversity Facts!
I combined these two topics because there’s a lot of overlap, and I decided that taking notes on both really helped me understand what the other is trying to say. This will be a long post, strap yourself in.
Organisms are organized and classified via a system known as Taxonomy. This system was developed by a scientist named Carl Linnaeus. To identify individual organisms, binomial nomenclature is used. What this means is each organism is called by their genus and species name. For example, Homo sapien, Pyrrhura molinae, (Green cheek conure), and Betta splendens.
There were originally 6 taxa or levels of organization developed by Linnaeus; kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. The 20th century saw many changes to Linnaeus’ original system of organization. The 3 original kingdoms were expanded to 5; Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia, a 6th, Archaebacteria was added to represent extremophiles that were so intense they had to be separated from bacteria to give their coolness more merit.
Today's scientists added a 7th level, domain. We use a 3-domain system based on DNA analysis. These domains are eukarya, bacteria, and archaea. Monera stopped being used as the prokaryotes were split between bacteria and archaea. Archaea are in fact, not bacteria, and so were given their own domain.
Here are some characteristics shared among members of the same domain:
Bacteria
All members of this domain are unicellular prokaryotes. This means that they lack internal membranes, like a nucleus, mitochondria, or chloroplasts)
Some are anaerobic (metabolize without oxygen) some are aerobic (metabolize with oxygen)
In the environment, some are decomposers, meaning they decompose and recycle dead organic material.
Some are pathogens, such as some strains of E.coli.
Speaking of E.coli, they also play a vital role in genetic engineering. E.coli is used to manufacture human insulin
Some reproduce using conjugation. This is a primitive process, where individuals exchange genetic material
They have a thick and rigid cell wall
Some, like blue-green algae, are autotrophic (make their own food) others are heterotropic (depend on complex organic substances for food)
Have no introns (noncoding segments of DNA)
Archaea
Also unicellular prokaryotes
Include extremophiles, which are organisms that live in extreme environments. Some examples are Methanogens (obtain energy by producing methane from hydrogen) Halophiles (thrive in extremely salty environments, such as the Dead Sea) and Thermophiles (thrive in extremely high temperatures, like Yellowstone's hot springs)
Have introns present in some of their genes
Eukarya
Have a nucleus and internal, membrane-bound organelles
Include: Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia
Moving into kingdoms, there are 4. These are the 4 mentioned above, fungi, Protista, Plantae, and Animalia. Here are some traits for each:
Protista
Most are unicellular, however, some are primitive multicellular organisms.
Include both heterotrophs (like amoeba, and paramecium) and autotrophs (like euglenas)
Move using different structures, such as pseudopods in amoeba, cilia in paramecium, and flagella in euglenas.
Include organisms not cool enough to sit with the fungi or Plantae kingdoms, like seaweed and slime mould.
Some, like algae and paramecium, carry out conjugation
Some can cause serious diseases like amoebic dysentery and malaria
Fungi
All are heterotrophic
Include unicellular and multicellular organisms
Able to digest extracellularly by secreting hydrolytic enzymes, and absorbing the nutrients via diffusion.
Are essential to the environment, as they are decomposers. They are saprobes, which mean they eat decaying organic matter.
They have cell walls, however, unlike plants whose cell walls are made of cellulose, their cell walls are made of chitin.
Lichens are fungi and algae living in a mutualistic, symbiotic relationship. Lichens are strong enough to withstand harsh, unforgiving environments, thus are often the pioneer organisms (the first to colonize a new environment).
They reproduce asexually by budding, like yeast, spore formation, like bread mould, or fragmentation (aka 1 parent breaks itself into several, living pieces), however, some can reproduce sexually.
Plantae
All are multicellular, nonmotile, and autotrophic.
Their cell walls, as mentioned above, are made of cellulose.
Plants can create their own food by photosynthesis, which uses chlorophyll a and b.
Their carbohydrates are stored as starch
They reproduce sexually by alternating between the gametophyte and sporophyte generations.
Some (tracheophytes) have vascular tissue while others (bryophytes) do not.
Animalia
All are heterotrophic, multicellular, and motile
Most reproduce sexually with a dominant diploid (2n) stage
In most, a sperm with a flagellum fertilizes a large, nonmotile egg.
Animals are classified, traditionally based on anatomical features (homologous structures) and embryonic development.
There are 35 phyla. Since I want to eat something today, I’ll go over the 9 the Barron’s SAT book describes, which are Porifera, cnidarians, Platyhelminthes, nematodes, annelids, molluscs, arthropods, echinoderms, and chordates.
Each animal phylum represents the evolution of a new, successful body plan. Some of these trends include specialisation of tissues, germ layers, body symmetry, the development of a head end, and body cavity formation.
Specialized cells, tissues, and organs
The cell is the basic unit of all life, for example, fat cells. Tissue is the next block up and is a collection of tissues performing a function, such as adipose tissue. An organ is a group of tissues working together to perform a similar function. For example, the brain.
Organisms making up the phylum Porifera, like sponges are made of a loose confederation of cells. Since those cells are not specialized, they are not considered tissue. These cells can react to stimuli, however, lack muscle or nerve tissue.
Organisms making up the phylum cnidaria possess tissue, however the most primitive and simple form of tissue. However, no organs. Flatworms do have organs, however, lack an organ system. Annelids, however, possess a full organ system.
Germ Layers
Germ layers make up the tissues and organs of the body. They form early in embryonic development. There are 3 kinds, however, not all organisms have all 3.
Ectoderm- outermost layer, makes up skin and nervous system
Mesoderm- middle layer, becomes blood, muscles, and bones
Endoderm- innermost layer, makes up the viscera (guts)
Porifera and cnidarians only have 2 layers. They lack mesoderm and instead have mesoglea or middle glue which holds the 2 layers together. Organisms that have 3 true germ layers are called triploblastic.
Body Symmetry
Most primitive animals exhibit radial symmetry. More complex animals exhibit bilateral symmetry. This is displayed in the drawings below. Echinoderms are a key exception to this rule. They develop with bilateral symmetry, however, as an adult, they exhibit radial symmetry. In bilateral symmetry, the body mirrors itself along the left and right on the longitudinal axis.
This also means that Patrick Star is not drawn biologically accurate. Shame.
Body Cavity Formation
The coelom is a fluid-filled body cavity, completely surrounded by mesoderm tissue. It is found only in more evolutionarily advanced organisms. Organisms like flatworms, who lack a coelom are known as acoelomates. Organisms, like nematodes or roundworms, who have a fluid-filled tube between the endoderm and mesoderm, functioning as a hydrostatic skeleton, are known as pseudocoelomates. Coelomates are organisms with a true coelom. Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda, and Chordata are all phyla that have this structure.
Development of a Head (Cephilization)
Organisms that developed bilateral symmetry also have an anterior and posterior end. (The head and rear end). The sensory apparatus and brain, or ganglia in less developed organisms are organized on the anterior end, while digestion, excretion, and reproduction all keep their organs on the posterior end. Cephilization began with flatworms.
Here is a cladogram to help visualize when different traits developed.
Traits of 9 different phyla:
Porifera:
No symmetry at all
No nerve or muscle tissue, sessile (nonmotile)
Filter nutrients from water drawn into a central cavity
Like many other primitive organisms, they only have 2 cell layers, ectoderm and endoderm, with the noncellular mesoglea holding them together
They have specialized cells, however, there is no organization to the cells, therefore they do not have tissue or organs.
Evolved from colonial organisms: fun fact, you can push a sponge through a cheesecloth, which will separate into individual cells, all and become a sponge. This is related to how a sponge reproduces
They reproduce asexually via fragmentation, meaning each piece that is separated has the necessary cells to become an individual organism. This means that technically,
Spongebob is reproducing here. Good on him.
They also reproduce sexually. They are hermaphrodites, meaning that they have characteristics of both males and females.
Cnidarians
Include organisms like hydra and jellyfish
Radial symmetry
Body plan is a polyp (vase-shaped, like hydra) which is mostly sessile or medusa (upside-down bowl-shaped, like jellyfish) which is mostly motile.
Life cycle- although there are exceptions, some go through a planula larva (free-swimming) stage, then proceed to their reproductive stage, that being asexual (polyps, ) or sexual (medusas)
Only have ectoderm and endoderm cell layers
Have a gastrovascular cavity where extracellular digestion occurs. They only have one opening to this cavity, so waste and food both go through the mouth.
Have lysosomes where intracellular digestion occurs.
No transport system, since each cell is in contact with the outside environment.
All have stinging cells (cnidocytes) for protection, with nematocysts, which are stingers.
Platyhelminthes
Include organisms like flatworms like tapeworms
These are the most simple organisms with bilateral symmetry, an anterior end, and 3 distinct cell layers (ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm... yay bones muscle and blood!)
The digestive cavity has only 1 opening for egestion and ingestion, like cnidaria, so food can’t be continuously processed.
Their body is solid and has no room for a true digestive and respiratory system to circulate food or oxygen. The solution to this problem was to develop an extremely flat and thin body that allowed most of their body cells to have contact with the outside and thus exchange nutrients and waste via diffusion.
Nematodes
Include roundworms like pinworms
Unsegmented worms with bilateral symmetry, but very little sensory apparatus.
A large majority of them are parasitic. Trichinosis is caused by the worm Trichinella, which is often found in uncooked pork.
C. elegans is often used as an animal model when studying genes and embryonic development.
Digestive tract is two way, meaning they have a mouth and an anus
Annelids
Include earthworms and leeches
Segmented worms with bilateral symmetry, and very little sensory apparatus.
Two-way digestive tract, and a tube within a tube, consisting of a crop, gizzard, and intestine.
They have a nephridium, which is a tubule responsible for the excretion of nitrogen waste, urea.
They have a closed circulatory system and a heart with 5 pairs of aortic arches
Diffuse oxygen and carbon dioxide through their moist skin
Hermaphrodites
Mollusca
Include squids, octopi, slugs, clams and snails.
Have soft bodies, protected by hard calcium shells
They have open circulatory systems. This means they don’t have capillaries, however, have blood-filled spaces called hemocoels, or sinuses.
Have bilateral symmetry and 3 distinct body zones: The head-foot, with sensory and motor organs, Visceral mass, with organs of digestion, excretion, and reproduction, and the mantle, a specialized tissue that surrounds the visceral mass and produces the shell.
They have something known as a radula, which is moveable and has teeth, that behaves like a tongue.
Many have gills and nephridia
Arthropods
Include insecta (like grasshoppers), crustacea (like shrimp and crabs), and arachnida (like spiders and scorpions
Have jointed appendages
Segmented into head, thorax, and abdomen
Contain more sensory apparatuses than annelids which means they can move much more freely
Have an exoskeleton made of a polysaccharide known as chitin.
They also have an open circulatory system, with a tubular hard and hemocoels
For excretion, they have structures known as Malpighian tubules, which remove the nitrogenous waste; uric acid.
They have air ducts known as trachea which bring air from the environment into hemocoels.
Echinoderms
Include sea stars and sea urchins.
Most are sessile, or slow-moving (so stop judging Patrick. It’s just how he was born)
They are an exception to the bilateral symmetry rule. As embryos, they have bilateral symmetry, however, as they develop, they develop radial symmetry. This evolved for their sedentary lifestyle.
They have a water vascular system, which creates hydrostatic support for their tube feet which allow for locomotion
They reproduce sexually via external fertilization
They also have the ability to reproduce asexually via fragmentation, and regeneration. As long as the new sea star has part of the central canal, it will become a new organism.
They have an endoskeleton with calcium plates. Endoskeletons grow with the body, as opposed to exoskeletons that have to be shed
Chordates
Include vertebrae (like us!)
Chordates have a notochord which is a rod that extends the length of the body and is a flexible axis.
They have a dorsal, hollow nerve cord
The tail is responsible for movement and balance. We, humans, have a coccyx, which is a vestige of what was once our tail. Hence the name, tailbone.
Birds and mammals are homeotherms, meaning they are able to maintain consistent body temperature. The other chordates, like fish, reptiles, and amphibians are cold-blooded.
Let’s get specific, with mammals (because mammals are a superior class of animals. I would know, I am one.)
Mammals are named after their mammary glands. These glands let mothers provide milk to their babies.
They all have hair or fur
They are endotherms, meaning they generate their hair from within
Most are placental mammals, also known as eutherians. The embryo develops internally in a uterus connected to the mother via a placenta. Since the embryo is unable to perform essential functions such as digestion and excretion by itself, until late into the pregnancy, the placenta diffuses nutrients in and waste out for the baby.
Marsupials are an interesting class of animals. Their babies are born extremely early in development (after about 36 days), however, the mother has a pouch, where the baby will nurse until around 9 months.
Most mammals give birth to live young. There are exceptions to this rule, as our favourite egg-laying mammal of action’s theme explained to us. (Dooby dooby dooa dooby dooby dooaa AGENT P!)
Platypi and spiny anteaters derive their nutrients from a shelled egg.
Getting even more specific, let’s talk about primates. These are the least superior mammals. I should know. I am one.
Primates were descendants of insectivores. They have dexterous hands, and opposable thumbs, which allow their hands to perform fine motor tasks. Instead of claws, they have nails
Their hands contain many nerve endings, making them very sensitive (which is why papercuts are so agonizingly painful.) Their eyes are forward-facing and close together. This allows face to face communication. Close eyes allow for overlapping fields of vision, increasing depth perception and hand-eye coordination.)
Primates engage in the most intensive parenting out of any mammal. They tend to have single births and build strong bonds with their young.
The book organized 3 different organisms based on their taxonomy. I put that down and added rats because rats are cool. Don’t @ me.
Cladograms
Cladograms are an extremely useful tool to show how organisms evolved different traits over time. There is a more complicated one above, however, the book included an extremely simplified one also that helped me understand how these graphs are made, so I will include that here as well.
First, like any graph, a table is made detailing the data that will be graphed. In this case, this data will be the specific organisms (cats, lizards, salmons, and earthworms) and the existence of specific traits (backbone, legs, and hair.)
Then a line is drawn, showing each trait as it developed, following by the organism with that trait.
What this graph shows is that cats and lizards are more related than lizards and earthworms, etc. Tldr; a cladogram/phylogenetic tree draws distinctions between shared traits (traits different organisms have in common) and derived traits (traits that the ancestor did not have) displayed in such a way so as to show the evolutionary history of a group of organisms.
So what qualifies an animal? Animals are multicellular eukaryotes. They are all heterotrophs, meaning they acquire nutrients via ingestion. (Unlike plants, which manage to get nutrients through photosynthesis, such as the Calvin Cycle which produces a plants sugar.) All animals can move in some form.
Movement is a broad term. Beating cilia, and waving tentacles both count as movement. The movement that often comes to peoples minds, however, is locomotion, which is the movement from place to place. Some animals are sessile, which means they lack the capability to move from place to place. Hydra can still wave their tentacles (in the air like they just don’t care). Sponges are an interesting case, as many legitimately, cannot move.
Above, I mentioned terms like endoskeletons, exoskeletons, and hydrostatic skeletons. Hydrostatic skeletons are closed body compartments filled with fluid, that provide support. Exoskeletons are external, nongrowing skeletons, made of chitin (which also makes up the cell walls of fungi). Endoskeletons are internal skeletons made of bone and cartilage that grow with the organism. They are connected to each other at joints via ligaments, and to skeletal muscles (voluntary muscles) via the tendons.
All life has the ability to maintain homeostasis. Life survives within a narrow temperature range, from around 0 degrees Celsius to around 50 degrees celsius. In the ocean, this was not a massive problem, as it is the most stable environment temperature-wise, as water is able to absorb a lot of heat. However, the land is a lot more crazy. Different organisms found different ways to adapt and survive.
For example, a jackrabbit's ears are a major tell about what climate they live in. Jackrabbits that survive in the cold have small ears to minimize heat loss. Jackrabbits living in the heat have large ears that allow heat to dissipate, filled with small capillaries making the ears appear pink.
Huddling, basking, panting and sweating, swarming, and shivering are all examples of adaptations different organisms use to survive in extreme temperature. Depending on whether an organism is an ectotherm or endotherm, their temperature regulation will be different. An ectotherm is heated from the outside. For example, crocodiles bask in the warm sun to heat their bodies up. Endotherms or homeotherms generate their heat from the inside by using large quantities of energy. For example, a litter of cold puppies will huddle together and with their mother, as their warmth, and their mothers warmth help heat them up.
Excretion refers to the removal of metabolic waste, such as excess water, carbon dioxide, and nitrogenous waste. There are 3 different kinds produced by different organisms
Ammonia
Ammonia is soluble in water and extremely toxic. Anybody who takes proper care of a fish tank is aware that cleaning the ammonia from their tank is essential in keeping their fish healthy.
Excreted mainly by marine life, like hydra and fish.
Urea
Not as toxic as ammonia
Excreted by earthworms and humans (urine contains urea and water)
In mammals, the liver is responsible for turning ammonia into urea.
Uric Acid
A paste-like substance that isn’t soluble, and not very toxic
Excreted by insects, many reptiles, and birds, and allow for the preservation of water.
Different organisms have different structures that allow for excretion.
Hydra excretes ammonia with no aid from any excess structure.
Platyhelminthes have flame cells that help them excrete ammonia
Earthworms have nephridia (metanephridia) to excrete Urea
Insects have Malpighian tubules to excrete uric acid
Humans have nephrons to excrete urea.
Following up, let's look at 3 different organisms and the characteristics that make them unique!
Hydra (from Cnidaria)
Hyrda digest their food in the gastrovascular cavity. They, unfortunately only have one hole, where food goes in and waste comes out. The gastrodermis (gastrovascular cavity lining, or gastrocoel) secrete digestive enzymes to help extracellular digestion progress. Lysosomes, which are found in animal cells are responsible for intracellular digestion.
Hydra reproduces asexually by budding. A bud is a genetically identical, but tiny little hydra that grows within or on the parent.
Earthworms (From Annelida)
The digestive system of earthworms is much more complex than that of the hydra. Luckily, they have a mouth and an anus. The mouth ingests decaying organic matter along with the soil. The food travels down the oesophagus into the crop. The crop stores the food until it is ready to be digested. The food then moves into the gizzard, with thick muscular walls that digest the food mechanically, with the aid of the ingested sand and soil. The food moves into the intestines, where chemical digestion occurs. The intestine has a large fold, called the typhlosole, which increases the surface area.
Worms don’t have a traditional respiratory system. Instead, gas is exchanged by diffusion, through moist skin. This type of respiratory system is called an external respiratory system. Their hearts have 5 aortic arches that pump blood. Worms have capillaries, giving them a closed circulatory system. Their blood contains haemoglobin, making it red. Earthworms have nephridia, excreting urea, and are hermaphrodites. A worms brain is made of two dorsal, solid, fused ganglia, with a solid, ventral, nerve cord.
Grasshoppers (From Arthropoda)
Grasshoppers also have a digestive tract consisting of a crop and gizzard. They also have mouthparts specialized for tasting, biting, and crushing food, and their gizzard has chitin plates that aid in mechanical digestion. Their digestive tract contains Malpighian tubules that remove nitrogenous waste in the form of uric acid. (No, I did not draw a grasshopper. I know when I am defeated.)
Grasshoppers have a similar nervous system to worms, however, they have an open circulatory system. They lack capillaries, and blood moves through hemocoels instead. Arthropod blood has no haemoglobin. They have an internal respiratory surface because gas exchange occurs on the inside. They have a system of tracheal tubes that lead to the hemocoels. Oxygen is carried by hemocyanin, with copper as the core atom. This is why molluscs and insects have blue blood.
