okay so i've made another male muse. fc is m*iles t*eller (mustache is canon). basically he grew up poor, his dad dipped out on him early in life and started another family so he's got two half brothers but he doesn't speak to his dad or brother's. his mom's father recently passed away and left her with all of his land and property, but she's ill so she signs it all to him. so now he's fucking loaded, trying to transition from working manual labor kind of jobs to now, not being required to do anything in his day to day life. he's torn between what he's known his whole life and this new high society world he's being thrust into. his great uncle is consulting with him, guiding him (lowkey jealous he didn't get the inheritance lbr). but ANYWAYS. i'm not interested in pairing him with a sex worker type bc i'm already doing that with someone. but i would be interested in either someone from his past, like a high school sweetheart or something maybe who is actually a good person and is trying to keep him grounded. Am I the only one who really struggles to stay in their OCs POV?

Like personally, a lot of my original ideas come from the fact that I found myself slipping into my OCs canon counterparts's POV -

and I think a lot of that stems from the fact that my OCs are not only self-inserts (although, lbr 🤷🏻‍♀️😏) but because they usually also are conceived to tickle something about canon characters I feel wasn't explored enough in the source material.

But a the same time I always feel uncomfortable swaying from my OCs POV, like I'm breaching some kind of sacred threshold by having a canon character look at one of my OCs and saying "they thought they're beautiful/brilliant/great".

And over the past almost twenty years of me being into transformative work my brain has started to solve this by automatically creating it's own verse and turning canon characters into mere FCs.

Like, point to most of my original stories and I can tell you exactly what fandom it was originally born in 🤦🏻‍♀️

♦ What was a mildly annoying thing that has happened to you rp wise?

Does the word mildly and annoying happen together when it comes to me? I jump straight to “ARGHHHHHHH”. Yes, pirate. Sue me fucker. Uuuuh mildly annoying... People continuing to try to snatch the names I was already using in that supernatural college rp. LIKE BITCH CHECK WHAT NAMES ARE IN USE BEFORE YOU APPLY THANKSSSSS. 

☢ What fads/trends are you so over?

Gif icons so small even a mouse can’t see it. The smallest I’m willing to deal with is 80x80, and smaller than that I will just go “ok nope i can’t fucking see the fc.”. I’m also way over over-edited gif icons. I’m over so many things tbh but most aren’t really fads. It’s just bs stuff in general. Like people straight out ignoring rules because they see a hottie guy and go “oooh i want to smut up him” when in reality they don’t plan on interacting with your girls. And yes I will straight out message people and go “so are you actually planning on interacting with my girls or naaaah?” 

✖ How has Tumblr RP changed since you started? ( @strawberryxwrites tagging you since you asked me the exact same thing) 

How has it changed... First of all, there’s so many more great writers I’m able to find now. People seem to have grown up a bit at least in my 4+ years on here. Was it 2016 i joined or 2014? I can’t remember. It was one of the two. There’s more focus on *realistic* smut, rather than coke-can sized dicks going straight up a but without lube. In the shower. Dear lord that scene will forever stay and haunt me. And it wasn’t even me writing it. 

Tbh i think a lot of the change is also due to who i choose to stay around. When i first joined i was surrounded by other 18-20 year olds who didn’t know what the hell we were doing, but now I write a whole lot more with like... 25+ year olds. Like two of my favorite partners are both 30+ and I ADOOOOOORE them. Probably because I’m a massive kid at heart and need someone who will tell me it’s not okay to eat a whole cake for dinner, as dinner. 

How else has it changed. Well, there’s a whole lot less blogs now that call themselves 18+ or 21+ andstill has like 16 year old muses. I still remember when i joined there was a blog that kept going around in the smut tags that literally had like 16 year old muses. And ew. Gross. No. Get that shit away from me. But back then i was a shy little baby and wouldn’t call anyone out on anything lbr. I just suffered in silence.

And I think tumblr rp has changed a lot for me honestly, because I stopped accepting second rate stuff. I stopped accepting people only replying to my males. I stopped accepting being ignored constantly, stopped accepting being pushed to do replies, or plots, or specific muses.

@themisfortunateson - alexa. babe. wifey. another one of those people that i missed for years but who came back and found me and suddenly my life is complete again. but for starters, lemme just tell you how proud i am of how hard you worked in school this year and how you obviously have your priorities straight and i am so fucking proud of you for that. you’ve done such an amazing job this year and you deserve praise for that. but as far as roleplay goes? i’ve never met anyone that rp’s BOTH winchesters as perfectly as you do. from voice to personality, to the slightest movement illustrated in the written word, you have them down to a T and you absolutely amaze me every time i see your writing. idk how you do it but you are fucking perfect and i couldn’t be luckier, (and neither could ruby and she damn well knows it). to be able to write with you over the years has been such a blessing and i wouldn’t change it for anything.

@themonstrovs - rae is bae. idk what else to tell you. you know more about me personally than pretty much anyone in the rpc and thats a very dangerous thing as far as i’m concerned. need dirt on dorie? hit up rae. lol. nah but we’ve built worlds together that could rival real life as far as i’m concerned. the characters we share and the connections between each of them are like watching a real live tv show even though most of them are OCs lol. maybe we should think about writing a TV show at this point, because we might have money in the bank here and just not know it lol. and personally, you’re such an amazing and strong person and i’m hella lucky to have you in my life. thank you for being my friend :)

Gender: male

General Appearance: Jackson has always been taller than most kids, he’s taken after his father in that regard. He’s got dark brown, almost black hair that has messy loose curls which Roni is forever using a straightener on so they become wavy because Jackson hates them and has his father’s eyes. Jackson is also on the slender side but has an athletic build because the boy is always playing soccer and basketball.

Personality: He’s always been a bit of a wild child, adrenaline junkie to the max and was always doing something that could get him in trouble or hurt but as he’s gotten older, he’s mellowed out a bit. He’s friendly and outgoing, makes friends extremely easily and is respectful to his elders. He knows he has money but he never flaunts it in front of his friends but will buy them presents if he knows that they really want or need something. He’s a good guy over all and girls love him.

Special Talents: He’s got a photographic memory, so he can recall things he’s seen years ago that others can’t recall details of and he’s really great at restoring old furniture.

Who they like better: Jackson likes both of his parents equally but sometimes he’ll lean more toward Roni’s side because she lets him get away with a little more than Sage would.

Who they take after more: Definitely Roni.

Personal Head canon: Keira’s his older sister, of course, but he doesn’t look at her ever and goes she’s my half sister. She’s always his big sister and even though he’s younger when people would call her names in school (mostly because in high school particularly, Keira is extremely in touch with her sexuality and who she is), he’s gotten into several fights defending her. Not that his parents approve of fighting in general but they aren’t too hard on him considering why the fights happen.

you seem really knowledgeable about race-related issues w/ the rpc so i thought i'd ask: is it just me, or does the rpc seem to have a problem w/ actually acknowledging and using japanese fcs?

ty ! but when it comes to race issues, i genuinely have a lot to learn.

 to answer your question—— i do believe the rpc has a problem acknowledging and using japanese fcs. but– in the same way the rpc has a problem engaging with most types of poc. however, if you (or anyone else) feels differently, please enlighten me. i would love to know. 

in the meanwhile, i did some… statistics and analysis for you below the cut. thank you to the 21 roleplays from which I used their taken character information. 

A STUDY IN THE USAGE OF JAPANESE FCS (a la the RPC 2019)

for a fuller and better understanding of your question, i decided to do a little research. i wanted to see which japanese fcs were being used, how often japanese fcs were being used, compare this to real-life numbers and more. 

STEP 1. GATHERING DATA 

trawling the tags, i came up with a list of rps. from there, i excluded any rp with under 20 muses— though i do note that none of the rps under 20 muses had more than one japanese fc. and then, i noted every single time i saw a japanese fc being used and the frequency of japanese fcs in the rp. i also went ahead and identified what country’s entertainment industry they were in (western/american, japanese, korean) and if they were of mixed descent.  

STEP 2. RESULTS

Based on these 21 RPs, the AVERAGE % of Japanese FCs is 1.53%.

OF NOTE, if there is any japanese fcs in an rp, the average is boosted to around 2.59%. With the exception of 2 RPs, every single RP that had any japanese fcs in it was within .2% of this score… aka, while there are some failures in our sampling (non-random), all of the members of our sample were fairly similar in terms of % of japanese fcs. 

The most popular fcs to see were RYAN POTTER (½ japanese and a western fc), NANA KOMATSU (full japanese, in the japanese industry ), & KAYLEE BRYANT (¼ japanese and a western fc). 

nearly all the fcs with multiple occurrences were mixed fcs from western entertainment. in addition, nearly all the fcs from western entertainment were mixed while the ones from eastern industries were full-blooded.  

STEP 3. INTERPRETATION. 

according to worldometers, the actual percentage of japanese people in the world is equivalent to 1.64%. the census shows that the percentage of japanese people in the us is 0.4%

so yeah. based on my crappy data, we’re doing okay. 

and tbh. im actually. really shocked and impressed by that. 

on one hand, it makes sense. while i would love to see more japanese fcs used (catch me… making gif icons of chiharu okunugi and saila kunikida in my free time all day), i’ve never noticed anything egregious abt japanese fcs in particular and this does back up the argument. 

 but… on the other, you’re right. i feel you 100% on the fact that we have a problem. as someone who is asian and in the rpc, i feel like it is important to emphasize that we need to and we CAN DO so much better. my data, as presented thus far, is skewed heavily in favor of “everyone’s doing the right thing! and everyone’s writing these people as japanese!”– when really that’s not the case at all.

for one, just because the percentages show that japanese fcs are being played, this does not guarantee good portrayal.

secondly, changing the definition of japanese… will change the results extensively. for example, this dataset includes people who are less than ½ japanese (booboo and fivel stewart (japanese, chinese, korean, ½ white + claims of blackfoot), ming lee simmons and kaylee bryant (¼ japanese) ) while they are still japanese, they ARE also mixed. and it’s hard. to make that decision. whether they should count as japanese portrayal and representation. 

i’ve also noticed that not all these characters are even played as japanese. in particular, kaylee bryant’s japanese heritage is sometimes ignored and she will be used to play played a white character, while booboo stewart is usually either native or just… ambiguously asian. neither of these things are good. 

and thus… if i stop giving people the benefit of the doubt and actually look for japanese portrayal instead of just … any japanese fc, this will put us  BELOW average.   

WHY WE MIGHT FEEL THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT USING OR ACKNOWLEDGING JAPANESE FCS (also WHY WE R VALID TO)

mixed fcs have privilege. and while we can love and support them and validate their identity, it is sometimes hard to see ourselves in them or to immediately identify them and acknowledge them as representation. sure, ryan potter is great. but even he’s spoken at length about how being hapa/hafu benefits him. 

other races (cough… just white people and maybe kpop fcs) seem to have a lot more variety in terms of fc choices. there’s a hundred different white fcs in use. in contrast, when there is japanese representation, it is usually the same people. if you go to ten rps and they each have one japanese fc, that’s dope. but if each of those ten rps just use nana komatsu… then you’re going to feel like. people don’t use japanese fcs. 

people might be writing shitty japanese stereotypes or portrayals. 

regardless if… all or none of the above is what you think, if you feel like an ethnicity is being slept on in the rpc. you are not wrong. you are also not alone. this is not the only group that feels this way. a big reason i run @vietrpc is for similar reasons. i wanted to see more viet faces. i wanted to see more diversity. but— lbr, the frequency of just lana condor in an rp will probably equal to the frequency of vietnamese people in the world. even though, lana condor is the only viet person ppl play (s/o to jessica vu, hyulari + karrueche for trying tho). 

i’ve seen black muns do similar things when they say that people don’t play black muses. while most rps i’ve seen do have some sort of black characters in it. they just happen to be… the most ‘passable’, the most ‘acceptable’. we all love zendaya, but when she’s the only black person that ever gets used in the rpc– that’s not great. it is so easy to feel like… because these are token fcs, that they don’t count. 

( note: i haven’t done the math. but i would probably put money down on that people don’t play black muses… to a level that’s beyond what asians in the rpc face. and there’s a lot more going on with this issue than there is w/ viet or japanese representation. i just wanted to reference it, because it is a similar topic.)

look. the rpc sleeps on poc. we know that. even if they use our faces. they still suck at doing it right. 

part of it is most of the rpc is western. and… lbr… there’s really not that many asians in western media. people just don’t like using fcs they’re unfamiliar with. and they’re not willing to immerse themself in the japanese entertainment industry or whatever.  that’s just going to be a thing. 

part of it is. cough. racism. wow, look at the time.

ok ngl that was… more work than i expected but it was really rewarding to see the data like that. if anyone enjoyed reading that or seeing that and wanted to see more, lmk. you could even help out tbh. i think it would be interesting to do this for other races. 

my lab reports always include my errors, so, if i had to redo this, i would have a larger sample and choose a random sample of 20 from it. i would do all my data in excel so i could see how my data was affected by removing people who were less than ½ japanese. i would also maybe include… a poll on how people write their characters. inclusive of the following questions.

what is your race? (you may answer with non-japanese/japanese or your specific race)

what do you do to write this character? what references do you draw upon?

is your character japanese

this would weed out the white-washing ppl n ppl who just don’t play a multiracial character in that way. 

if your fc was changed to that of another ethnicity, would your backstory change? 

would the way you play your character change?

on a scale of 1-4 with 1 being not important at all to 4 being very important, how important is your fc’s ethnicity when it comes to writing and developing your muse?

these open-ended questions would help me understand the portrayal of japanese characters in the rpc

something of a golden boy when he was younger, well-liked and talented enough to be noteworthy, a strong athlete who seemed to be going places.

his parents are both artists, and while neither of them are terribly successful, that is not for a lack of skill. they just never seemed to get the break they were hoping for, and it’s not much a secret that they hoped their son would become that chance for them.

they had big plans for him, figured they could raise him into their art, pass on their talent as he grew up. they named him achilles specifically for such a purpose, the kind of name that would be memorable attached to a musician or artist or poet.

it was something of a disappointment, then, when he gravitated more towards athletics in school. but he was good enough at them that they tried not to mind much

he took art classes, too, as he enjoyed them, and he had enough natural inherited talent to keep him ahead of his peers. for him, that was about all that mattered at the time, and didn’t put much other thought to it.

everything seemed to be going well for him, for a while. the nickname ‘ace’ came around as he jumped rapidly from jv to varsity to captain, and quickly became all he was known as among his peers.

after his freshman year at a public school, it wasn’t hard for him to get a scholarship to a more prestigious, private high school. if he promised to play for their teams, they’d give him a full ride, and he’d get the chance to be surrounded by more success and wealth than anyone in his family was used to. he started to feel more like the blue-bloods around him, walking their campus and playing their sports--- cross-country in the fall, hockey in the winter, lacrosse in the spring.

he graduated high school at the top of his own world, with several scouting letters inviting him to his choice of colleges, and a few of his pieces still hanging proud in his school’s art building. he picked his favorite college on a few whims, not thinking much about his future degree, as he figured he’d decide that as it came along. in his mind, there were better things to focus on.

sophomore year of college was likely his peak. that’s probably what he’d say if you asked, but that answer changes all the time.

ace wishes there could have been some kind of significant moment he could point out that would mark the start of his decline--- an injury, maybe, or a bad breakup, or an accident, or anything. the reality is, however, that at some point everyone else just caught up to him. suddenly he couldn’t simply ride on natural skill, and realized he had no real practice actually trying at anything. he started having to work harder and harder to seem impressive in comparison to anyone else, then just to stay at their same level, then to try and catch up to them. 

his art started failing him. everything he made felt slightly unnatural, stilted, like an inferior copy of something else someone had already made. he realized nothing he’d made in the past had been that impressive, really, he’d just never actually been asked to question it.

ace scraped through his senior year, hanging on to his scholarship by a thread. he’d collected enough credits to graduate but with no real specialty, just a vague sort of degree he had no desire to use.

for a while after, all he did was float around his college town. he tried a few different jobs, and felt passion for none of them. he attempted to keep up with his art, but it all felt dead and wrong then. while he’d also played piano for years, he couldn’t really write any music of his own. he did start creating playlists and occasionally broadcasting them online with a bit of his commentary, but that was more as a desperate sort of outlet. he’d never been that creative, he’d just faked it well enough until he and everyone else finally had to notice.

he moved to baltimore entirely on a whim, upon finding a help wanted ad for a local florist shop. he was tired of feeling stalled in his college town, and wanted something new. besides, the job drew him in--- he liked the idea of something at least somewhat creative, but that didn’t feel quite so personal.

he’s come to realize that he doesn’t really have anything of his own. he could succeed in sports only because he didn’t have anyone around who could keep up yet. he can make something interesting with flowers because they’re already beautiful. he can make a decent playlist as someone’s already done all the hard work. all ace really knows how to do is create from what’s already there.

both of his names came to feel like something of an insult. ‘achilles’ was given to make him memorable as an artist, which he isn’t, and ‘ace’ was given as a sort of reward for his athletic successes, which he has entirely run out of. still, he prefers ace, as it draws less attention.

now, he’s just floating. all his old high school confidence and charisma, the kind of fake-rich jock-boy presence he’d adopted, still lingers, though he doesn’t look the part anymore. he's got things like impulsive tattoos of other people’s art, dark clothes he won’t worry about keeping neat, a smoking habit he doesn’t feel the need to tamp down anymore for the sake of his health.

going to school with a bunch of entitled wealthier students had certainly introduced him to the world of doing thoughtless things simply for the sake of them, but until he was out of college he’d never really indulged any of them. ace wanted to keep his focus on the things that had mattered at the time. now, however, he finds himself worrying less and less--- driving too fast down the interstate, picking up arguments with people he shouldn’t, getting high on a tuesday night when he’s got work the next day, hooking up with others he doesn’t really think much about. he doesn’t have any grander plans, so he exists minute to minute.

he’s not truly despondent about any of it, doesn’t see himself as a great tragedy. for that, he’d have needed to fall harder, and from higher up. more than anything else, he feels defeated, or maybe resentful at his past self. he’s existing, and that’s about all he expects from himself at the present.

tl;dr : parents wanted him to be an artist, he wanted to be an athlete, for a while it seemed like he was going to be both--- until the golden boy lost his footing, without a real catalyst to put the blame on. former varsity captain, now odd combination of punk-rock florist with a shitty radio show, constantly finding ways to distract himself from where he’s at.

i haven’t come up with any of ace’s specific connections yet, but i’d really love to get him out into the mix, so if you have any interest in me throwing him at of your characters, let’s do this !!  he’s a mess but that’s not really new for my characters at this point lbr

22; Weapon; Junior at the DWMA. She and her twin sister ( Jinae ) are scissor blades. Their meister is Bora. Jinae and Jinhee are a handful tbh, but the trio have a very strong soul resonance bc Bora knows how to handle them.

Jinhee is cute, but she has a mischievous streak and often gets into a lot of trouble. Sometimes she’ll out-of-the-box bleach her hair to try to differentiate from her sister.

han bora; 

21; Meister; Junior at the DWMA. Wields Jinhee & Jinae; dual wielding meisters are very rare, as it’s hard to get three souls on the same wavelength, so while bora isn’t anything super impressive in combat, she’s a very good student just because she can wield two weapons at once.

Bora is grumpy tbh, but only in public. In private she is very soft. Classic tsundere trope.

24; Weapon; Senior at the DWMA. She’s a zanbato ( those giant ass anime swords ); when people see her and her meister, they often assume that hyejoo is the meister just because of the size difference. Lucky is her meister, but also her partner tbh.

Hyejoo doesn’t talk much, choosing instead to take things in and process them strategically. She’s like 5′10 tho don’t fuck w her.

23; Weapon; Sophomore at the DWMA. She’s a wHIP tbh. Her meister / partner is Kimi. They worked really well together from the start, n tHEN SLEPT TOGETHER TBH, and after that they fell out of sync n now Roxi has kind of figured out that she needs to get Kimi’s mOTOR RUNNING IF U CATCH MY DRIFT in order for them to reach soul resonance.

A lil kinky, confident, a dom. if u touch kimi she will kill u.

23; Meister; Sophomore at the DWMA. He weapon is Hyerin. They’re kind of opposites; Kyung comes across very submissive and shy and quiet, and Hyerin comes across very confident and aggressive, but in reality both of them are the opposite. 

Lowkey Kyung was based on that plot that was about the awkward quiet kid getting a pity date n then kissing the date afterwards and things getting kinky-- that is Kyung. She is a huge dom behind the scenes.

17; Switch; Freshman at the DWMA. She and her partner ( both in the battle sense and the romantic sense ) Angel grew up together, and have a very strong soul bond ( binch they soulmates yo ). They were scouted to the DWMA early and are lowkey the golden kids / prodigies. They are both weapons and can both wield each other -- Angel is more a long range ( chakram ) weapon, and Soonja is more short range ( daggers ), though both weapons are versatile if they need to be. The pair gauge the situation at hand to decide which one of them will be the weapon for that situation.

22; Meister; Sophomore at the DWMA. Her weapon, Chalita, is a literal fucking tank. She’s kind of prissy and stuck up, n always wearing name brand everything so no one takes her too seriously, but she can maneuver a tank like a boss, n has great reflexes. 

sung hyorin;

24; Meister; Senior at the DWMA. Her weapon, DJ, is a machine gun. Hyorin and DJ are nearly at their 99 keishan soul and 1 witch soul bottom line, and so are pretty high up in the pairing rankings at the DWMA. She’s also one of the older students, though she’s one of the few older ones who don’t get threatened when their are talented younger students.

23; Weapon; Sophomore at the DWMA. Her meister is Harper, and her weapon form is throwing stars. She’s very optimistic and energetic, but kind of a dumbass. A pretty dumbass. Think Karen from Mean Girls. She means well tbh.

22; meister; junior at the DWMA. Her weapon, Natalie, is a sword/shield duo disguised as a parasol. They do a really good job on undercover missions, because they can be suited up and ready for battle, but still blend in with a crowd. Also these two are on some sLOW BURN SHIT.

bit yeonhan;

23; meister; senior at the DWMA. She and her twin sister were set up to be the most powerful meister/weapon duo that the world had ever seen, but the two had some different morals and ways of going about things, and their stubbornness and pettiness made their souls fall out of resonance. Now, Yeonhan works with Hongpil. He’s a giant mace, and Yeonhan says she likes working with him better than Jinhan because she feels like Hawkgirl or Joan of Arc, but while you’d never get her to admit it, she misses her sister and how powerful they were as a team.

ahn hongki;

23; meister, senior at the DWMA. He and his twin brother were average-- not terrible but not going to be superstars any time soon. So when Yeonhan and Jinhan stopped being able to work together properly, the two volunteered-- not only did they have a chance to both improve themselves, but hot girls. Hongki works with JInhan now ( a double ended kusarigama ), and while it had been a little hard at first ( since the kusarigama and the mace used very different fighting styles ), he’s gotten used to it and they make a good team. Hongki and Hongpil are often trying to make the girls get along, though.
