"In a day laden with religious symbolism on his trip to Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, the pope issued a joint declaration with the national grand imam and other local faith leaders that called for "decisive action" to address the warming planet.
"The human exploitation of creation, our common home, has contributed to climate change, leading to various destructive consequences such as natural disasters, global warming and unpredictable weather patterns," read the declaration, formally signed by Francis and Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar.
"We sincerely call on all people of good will to take decisive action in order to maintain the integrity of the natural environment and its resources," they said."

How is one chosen as an Ayatollah?
Through decades of outstanding scholarly work, which inspires the devotion of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of followers.  A typical ayatollah’s career takes him to one of the Shiites’ holy cities, like Najaf in Iraq or Qom in Iran. There, he studies at one of the pre-eminent Shiite seminaries, where he becomes an expert in theology, jurisprudence, science, and philosophy. After years…

Concern for humanity.
The Grand Imam underlined the need to continue advocating for peace and love.  He also called for opposing hate speech, the manipulation of religion and doctrines to ignite wars among nations, and instilling fear and terror in the hearts of people.
He said this was the mission pursued by Al Azhar Al-Sharif, in partnership with the Catholic Church, Western and Eastern Churches, and other religious institutions, in a collective effort to revive the culture of dialogue among followers of religions and to consolidate the principles of peace and harmonious coexistence.
“Our gathering today is not a luxury, but a necessity, dictated by concern for the future of humanity,” he said. “We are seeking a solution to its complex crisis which has begun to expand and infiltrate, warning of severe consequences if allowed to persist on this disastrous path.”

I think that I’ve realized one of the big reasons that antisemites are so anti-Israel—I mean, aside from it being a state where a lot of Jews are.
Israel is a state that protects Jews. It also does a lot of bad things under the Likud government. And it also harms Jews that get in the way of the Likud government. But none of that matters to antisemites.
Because a state is an institution. And the left has been very clear that it’s all about criticizing institutions.
And in the absence of a governing religious body to criticize, the Israeli state is all the leftist antisemites have to criticize.
They can’t seem to fathom that the leadership of Israel is not in anyway synonymous with a religious institution. They cannot seem to fathom that the Likud government isn’t in any way representative of Jewish people as a whole—and not even of Israelis as a whole! (Once again, Israel is a parliamentary system. It’s about who has the largest proportion of votes, not a majority) and that Jews in Israel as well as non-Jews in Israel have a say in who to vote for and often strongly oppose Likud and Netanyahu.
It’s like a whole chunk of otherwise progressive people have been waiting for a way to criticize all Jews by attacking some institution they think speaks for us.
They cannot fathom that we are literally just a small ethnic group with half of our number in one location and would very much like for us and for them to not be victims of violence. That’s the uniting principle.
They’ve continually demonstrated how little they know and understand about Judaism, Jewish culture, and Jewish history.
I genuinely do not know if they’re aware that there’s no supreme Jewish council or whatever. There’s no Jewish version of the Grand Imam, Grand Ayatollah, Dalai Lama, Celestial Master, or Head/President of the Church.
We don’t even have a main synagogue from which edicts or traditions flow. We did have one. The Wall in Israel was our main institution. But colonizers and invaders destroyed it. And other religions built their institutions on top of it. And the religious governing body of Jews fell apart thousands of years ago.
…so the only thing that holds us together is each other. Rabbis don’t answer to some central authority. We hold traditions together through culture and traditions and connection to our land of origin, like many our even most other indigenous cultures.
But, because there is one (1) place on the entire planet where Jews are a majority of the population and not a minority, suddenly vicious attacks on the character of Jews everywhere are fair game as long as antisemites pretend they are talking about “Israel.” But they aren’t talking about the State of Israel. Because they get mad whenever we tell them to please specify the current government and the Likud party, because they are the ones responsible for carrying out the needless violence.
But they won’t do that. They seem to believe that there is some uniting religious force that exists in the Israeli government. And they seem to think that we are all united by this religious directive of “Zionism.”
That’s the only way any of their criticisms make sense logically. They don’t see themselves as attacking actual humans. They see themselves as attacking institutions. And any Jew who disagrees with them? Well they are just bastards supporting the institution.
But…there is no supreme Jewish institution. It doesn’t exist. It doesn’t exist because they destroyed those institutions.
They’re making themselves feel good by thinking attacking Jews is somehow helping free Palestine. But it’s just attacking Jews.
It’s like a weird continuation of supercessionism. They’re projecting their religious structure onto a religion that is fundamentally incompatible with that structure.

Pope Francis bids farewell to Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar, left, as he leaves after signing the Joint Declaration of Istiqlal 2024 at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, Sept. 5, 2024. The pope urged Indonesians to live up to their country's promise of “harmony in diversity” and to fight religious intolerance as he set a rigorous pace for an 11-day, four-nation trip through tropical Southeast Asia and Oceania. i'm sunni so this isn't me trying to make a sectarian thing out of this, i swear, but... watching hezbollah and iran actually try to push back against israel while so many of the sunni world leaders wring their hands about the situation and go "oh what can we do" makes me feel a special kind of frustrated. i wish the muslim world wasn't still so divided
That's because Shi'a Islam wasn't just a branch of Islam, it was a resistance movement that had fought against various oppressors throughout time. The one who waved the flag of Imam Hussain (a) and was leading our cause is our Lady Zainab al-Kubra (sa), the grand-daughter of Prophet Muhammed (sawas), when she stood in the courtyard of the Umayyad caliph and opposed him. This is why the revolutionary spirit of Shi'a Islam remains as strong as ever 1400 years later. (Look up Arbaeen) It is in our need to extend this revolution in the form of resistance against any oppressor, be it a Muslim or not.
Sunni Muslims have always been the more privilged group, because they've been in power since the Abbasids. For them, the revolutionary cause is not emphasised, because there wasn't anything for them to fight for or against other than for the Arab aristocracy to benefit from it as their empire expanded.

A week ago, a woman visited Islam's holiest spot, the Kabaa in Mecca, and unfurled a Palestinian flag while smiling for a camera.
Saudi security quickly came to tell her to put the flag away, which she did.
youtube
That was the entire incident. But video of it caused an uproar on social media, where people claimed she was "arrested" (she wasn't.) and that she had every right to display the flag.
Haaretz reports that Saudi officials have responded:
Speaking with Al-Ekhbariya TV, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais stressed that the holy site is a place of worship where only religious slogans and chants should be heard. Al-Sudais, one of the nine imams of the Grand Mosque, said that visitors come to the site to pray and worship, not to express political views. He urged worshippers not to let their emotions distract them from their prayers, suggesting that they pray to God (Allah) for salvation over their concerns rather than expressing demands at the holy site.
This is a policy. Whether one agrees or not, the Saudis have a policy for their holy sites and are trying to enforce it.
Compare this to what regularly happens on the Temple Mount with the full permission of the Waqf:
Tumblr media
But they do prohibit the Israeli flag from being shown.
Meaning the only consistent policy shown by the Waqf is antisemitism.
I'm still waiting to hear from any human rights group that Jews should have equal rights to worship on their holiest site.

Pope Francis on Thursday called for solidarity against religious extremism during his visit to Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country.
The 87-year-old head of the Catholic Church highlighted the importance of unity to "defeat the culture of violence and indifference," during his visit to the Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in South-East Asia.
Pope Francis met with Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar and signed a joint declaration which underscored values common across different religions to promote reconciliation and peace. They both expressed concern over climate change.
He and the grand imam stood at the entrance to the "Tunnel of Friendship," an underpass which connects the mosque compound with the neighbouring Catholic cathedral, Our Lady of the Assumption.
It was an "eloquent sign," Pope Francis said as the two places not only faced each other but were linked, allowing for "encounter, dialogue ... a genuine experience of fraternity."
On the third day of his visit, the pope later celebrated Mass in a football stadium before a congregation of more than 60,000, using his sermon to repeat his call for tolerance between the world's religions, dialogue and peace.
Pope Francis arrived in Indonesia on Tuesday, kicking off the longest foreign trip of his tenure so far, due to take him to four countries in South-East Asia and Oceania over the next 12 days.
With more than 240 million Muslims, Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world.
On Friday, he will continue his journey to Papua New Guinea, before visiting East Timor and Singapore.

The emblematic scene of the Nazi officials questioning the Algerian Imam of Andalusian ancestry Kaddour Bengharabit (1868 - 1954), the religious leader of the Grand Mosque of Paris who gave refuge to hundreds of Jews in the temple by issuing them certificates that they were Muslims, so that they could escape the concentration camps towards North Africa. After the end of World War II, Bengharabit was awarded France's National Order of the Legion of Honor, and his story was portrayed in the film Les hommes libres in 2011, which shows the Muslim imam's effort to save Jewish families during the Holocaust.

Tarih 1919.
Sinirler gergin, herkesin morali bozuktur.
Caminin İmamı Rıdvan Hoca, Cuma Hutbesi için minbere çıkar ve cemaatin şaşkın bakışları arasında;
Tamamen gerçek ve tarihimizde benzeri olmayan bu olay sayesinde halkın milli bilinci uyanmış;
... "Silah gücüyle inen bayrağımız 🇹🇷, iman gücüyle yeniden dalgalandırılmıştır."🇹🇷
Allah Rahmet Eylesin mekanı cennet olsun 🇹🇷
.....
The date is 1919.
#Kahramanmaraş is under occupation.
French General Governor Andre organizes a ball in Maraş one evening to celebrate the occupation and invites the Armenian girl to dance.
But the Armenian girl said:
"I cannot dance with you unless the Turkish flag in the castle comes down" and turned down the offer.
Thereupon, the General gives a vile order to his soldiers:
-"Take down that piece of cloth from the castle."
The next day, Friday, the people of Maraş see that the Turkish flag in the castle has been taken down and the French flag has been erected in its place.
The people are sad and helpless.
Then the Friday call to prayer is recited and the people gather in the grand mosque.
Nerves are tense, everyone is in a bad mood.
The Imam of the mosque, Rıdvan Hodja, goes up to the pulpit for the Friday Sermon and, amidst the astonished looks of the community, he takes the TURKISH Flag in his hand and says:
-"Hey Community, you should know that I did not go up to the pulpit for the Friday Sermon.
Friday prayer is obligatory for free people.
In a country where its own flag does not fly in its castle."
"Friday Prayer is not performed.
First, let's wave our flag again and then perform our prayer," he says.
Suddenly, takbir sounds are heard in the mosque.
With this feeling and courage, the people attack the castle.
The French soldiers are afraid of what to do, and our flag is raised again with the sounds of takbir.
On that day, people perform the Friday Prayer in the bastion of the castle.
Thanks to this completely real and unique event in our history, the national consciousness of the people was awakened and ;
..."Our flag, which was lowered by the power of arms, was raised again by the power of faith."
Rest in peace!

#5: Thawrah (Revolution)
My fifth sheet. The streets and parks on this sheet focus on revolutionaries. You have the likes of Fred Hampton Square, Imam Ali mosque, Simón Bolívar Parkway, Angela Davis Circle and Station, Ruta Che Guevara, Calle & Parque Emiliano Zapata, Marsha P. Johnson Avenue, Abu Dharr Al-Ghifary Street, Assata Shakur Road, Thomas Sankara Avenue, Qiu Jin Street, Huey P. Newton Avenue, among many others.
There's a large roundabout in this neighborhood surrounded by Parque de la Revolución. Plaza de Palestina and Plaza de la Liberación anchor this large roundabout. Malcom X Boulevard, Grand Makkah Concourse, Amir Al-Mu'minin Road flow into the roundabout. Many street names from the Ummah neighborhood to the north and from the Al-Imam Al-Husayn / Al-Ma`sumin neighborhood to the east make appearances on this sheet as well.
