The current GOP is not your grandmother's Republican Party. Dwight Eisenhower or Gerald Ford would be horrified by how the 2024 Republican presidential nominee is leading a full scale assault on democracy while the rest of the party either cheers him on or pretends not to notice anything.
Trump wants to shut down all media which doesn't heap praise upon him. He basically wants to be an orange Kim Jong-un.
Trump's connections to the autocratic régime in Saudi Arabia have gotten surprisingly little attention. The Saudis have essentially gifted Jared Kushner, Trump's slumlord son-in-law, with $2 billion. Trump himself inked a deal to link his name to a new skyscraper in Saudi Arabia. And Saudi state TV just conducted an interview with Trump which could pass as an infomercial for the Trump campaign.
While Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are doing normal campaign things, Trump talks about Arnold Palmer's penis and shuts down a McDonald's so he can pretend to be a worker for 20 minutes but in a less sanitary way than a normal worker there.
I mentioned President Gerald Ford in the first paragraph of this post. The late president's daughter has endorsed Kamala Harris.
Gerald Ford’s daughter endorses Harris
Vice President Harris and I likely disagree on some policy matters, but her integrity and commitment to those same principles that guided Dad have led me to conclude that Kamala Harris should be elected 47th President of the United States.
This is an election where chaos, autocracy, and corruption are competing againsr normalcy and democracy. For rational people, this is a no-brainer.

"The ride out yesterday was an event. Three of us—Adolph the con-man, Tony the bootlegger, and I—were driven out in an old Pontiac sedan by two marshals. We left West Street dressed in our civilian clothes, which felt wonderful, and in handcuffs, which did not. The three of us were shackled together before the doors were opened, with me in the middle. We must have looked quite a sight to the gaping passers-by: the desperate-looking 145-pound Hassler flanked by Adolph, who certainly weighs well over 200, and Tony who, though short, certainly cannot go much below that figure. I amused myself with the thought that our little procession might look like some excessively dangerous criminal shackled to two detectives and followed by two more. I leered at an open-mouthed bystander, and he recoiled. And me so peaceable, too!
We had been looking forward to the trip so eagerly that the cuffs were like a dousing with cold water, but soon after we came out of the Holland Tunnel in Jersey the car pulled up in front of a diner and the marshals took the things off. Then, after exhibiting the various pieces of artillery strapped to their persons and offering several unsolicited testimonials to their unerring marksmanship, they invited us in to have some coffee and doughnuts.
From there on we had a nice trip. The sun shone, and we feasted our starved eyes on the grass and trees and the peaceful, law-abiding little houses we passed, and prayed severally and collectively for a plague of flat tires to prolong the trip, even though that might have meant being cooped up overnight in some village lock-up. The route ran through the Pennsylvania countryside I know so well, including Allentown where I was born, and I reflected with amusement on the horror that would grip various uncles and aunts and cousins there if they could have seen me.
About twenty miles west of Allentown we stopped for lunch in a little Pennsylvania Dutch hotel whose proprietor obviously knew our guards and had some kind of arrangement with them. We guessed what the arrangement was when the marshals read off the choice of meals available instead of letting us see the menu. The three dishes they read were obviously the least expensive on the list. I managed to sneak a look at a menu as we went out, and found that the sausages-and-mashed potatoes lunch I had was priced at sixty-five cents. We had learned before we left that the marshals are allowed up to S1.50 per meal per prisoner, so I don't think it is the depth of cynicism to assume that the slip signed by the manager made it possible for the boys to collect a little minor graft on the side. I could not help thinking of Tony, serving eighteen months for neglecting to pay the proper taxes on the liquor he sold: what is the basic difference between that and ripping off the government the way our marshals did?
The proprietor of the hotel exhibited the kind of wary fascination many people show toward captive criminals, but his little daughter, about five years old, was delightfully natural. We had a wonderful chat with her, as a result of which the proprietor himself soon was much more at ease. Before we left we were talking quite comfortably.
The trip ended, of course, much to our regret. We rode through Lewisburg, where only a few years ago I had come to lecture to a group of religious educators at Bucknell, and a few minutes later the marshals parked their car with some others outside the twenty-foot wall of the penitentiary."
