I'm only halfway though Hbomberguy's new video and I dont know if this is a universal experience but my main horrified takeaway from hbomb's plagiarism video so far is that one of my highschools TAUGHT AN ENTIRE CLASS OF 13 YEAR OLDS TO PLAGIARISE. LIKE, ON PURPOSE.

I ended up moving to a much better highschool, but my first highschool essentially taught us to "write" essays by reading what someone else had written and then write what they said again but putting it "into your own words". Which in practice was teaching us to change, for example, "the works of Shakespeare were regarded by many as the first popular art form" to "Shakespeare's plays have been said by some to be the first example of popular media". One teacher actually told us that the process of writing an essay was "saying what the people you've researched have said, in a way where it sounds like you said it".

Like. The tactics that actual plagiarists use to hide the fact that they were stealing. An actual teacher tried to teach me to do that.

#hbomberguy #im so glad i left that school early the next year. it definitely would have gotten worse.#i literally didnt learn what a bibliography was until grade 9 because of how shit my first highschool was.#at the same time if a student wrote a paper that was 'too good' even if it was orginal theyd accuse them of stealing without proof #like i wrote a completely original paper and got the note 'this is very good - did you write it all yourself?'#fuck you man. yes i did. despite you trying to teach me to do the opposite #they accused me of getting my parents to write it for me. i had to show them everything i researched and my dad lost it at them #this was also the same school where they took every kid with a disability out of maths regardless of if they were good at maths or not #and taught them shapes like they were fucking three years old #i remember hanging out in the maths with all the other autistic kids and prentending to have never seen a triangle before for a joke #and while thats really bad and abelist. the non-disabled kids were still being taught addition and division like they were 8 and not 12 #the whole thing was a massive fuck up shit fest. it took the year 7 maths teacher leaving for us to all get the same maths class #and we STILL werent being taught to an age appropriate level because we missed so much grade 7 maths it had to be caught up in grade 8 #i would burn it down but its not a highschool anymore lol

whenever i see people like "ITS STILL GOING?!?!?!?!?" about a series they liked in middle school that i currently like i giggle but that is exactly how i feel about hermitcraft. i watched that shit in season 4 and now theyre on season TEN? WHAT?

passed histology, failed anatomy, all in all it's pretty good!!!!

#jo in the tardis*#it was too overwhelming i made it pretty far with anatomy but when i got to the pelvis which is her favourite #i just felt the exhaustion catch up to me because it's an exam that lasts for 7 hours and i already had one exam behind me #so i did a pretty big thing!!!!!#as for histology i got an 8 (the highest grade is 10) but the professor wants me to come again on monday #to try and give me a 9 which i tried so hard to fight against but she won't let me not try #because the exam was a bit rushed on her part due to having something to do afterwards

so wait, since i was just reminded of the recorder thing donna talked about in the giggle, i now have a question for uk ppl: do yall learn the recorder in school? like in a music class? and like how much do yall have music class over there?

#this is a very interesting topic for me as a music educator from the us #ik a guy from ireland and he said there was no music class in schools for him and like not the same country BUT same island #(as northern ireland. not the others in the uk but still)#and its so wild and fascinating music education is a fascinating field and the way we do it in the us seems to be largely vvv unique to us #for clarification on how things are different so ppl have a better idea on how to answer my question lol:#in the us music class is standard in elementary schools and most places have general music until abt 5th/6th grade (year 6/7)#(general music = basics- music games learn recorder SOME notation-reading; often classroom instruments eg boomwhackers claves maracas #orff instruments if you're lucky/from a school district that isnt poor. also some world music)#its less standardized after that and not every school will have music after middle school but concert bands and choirs are both huge here #choirs start right on the heels of general music classes (sometimes start earlier + students elect to be in choir instead of general music)#bands USUALLY start in 4th grade (year 5) but sometimes can be later 5th/6th (year 6/7) or even 7th (year 8) (WAY less common)#depends on the state generally 4th is most common i think (choirs start at around the same time i think so probs 4th but choir isnt my area #orchestras are weird bc theyre a lot less common but can commonly start younger bc of one of the big approaches to music ed (suzuki method)#so like maybe 3rd grade (year 4) maybe 4th w/ band (year 5) but i have a friend who teaches at a private school #& said they have 1st/2nd graders (year 2/3)!! orchestra is also not my area though #also marching bands: vv common! usually just in hs (starting 9th grade / year 10) bc it supports the football team at games #but starting in 8th grade (year 9) is also common (sometimes even 7th / year 8)#theres two different styles: collegiate/show band and competition. former is very rah rah pop music etc; competition is more abstract #show bands are clearly designed to entertain whereas competition is designed to be more impressive and tell a story #so more impact moments abstract shapes/lines on the field and has movements - opener ballad closer (fast-slow-fast)

That post about Primarchs having issues due to their sheer size, makes me appreciate I made my Primarch kids smaller than their fathers.

It probably helps them a lot to be able to use/feel normal with ordinary objects sized to Astartes standart.

Also I got my essay exam back today. Full points!!! Which was a surprise bc my 4th essay was definitely lower quality than the other three (bc I rushed it), but still good enough to get full points!!!!

Makes me wonder what that other one I spied being a 1 was like 🤔🤔🤔 bro was NOT good at writing I guess.

#speculation nation #weird grading scale. each essay was rated 0 thru 3. 0 being Real Bad or just plain wrong.#1 being Okay. 2 being Good. and 3 being Excellent. according to what my professor explained.#and all the points for all 4 essays were totaled. so since i got 3s on all 4 i got 12/12 points.#but he also said it's not like percentage based for the grades. 3s earn As 2s earn Bs and 1s earn Cs. presumably.#so even if u got a 4/12 thats not failing. still not very good tho.#i realized when i was writing that it really has been a while since ive done a proper essay. im a techie not a literature student.#i do scientific reports so much more than fucking Essays.#i tried to dust off the old skills tho and i guess i did pretty good overall. tho i wonder. it feels like he was pretty lax in grading.#bc im being honest my last essay was Not Good in structure. i was rushing bigtime. i just wanted it done.#but i guess bc i answered all the questions and was generally good at diction (creative writing Does help with this)#it was still good enough to be a 3. which makes me So Curious how bad that person did to get a 1......#i only caught a peek when i was grabbing mine. couldnt look too in depth.#ALSO THO tuesday's presenter got a 7.6 As Opposed To my 8.6!!! professor gave them a 7 (as opposed to my 8)#which makes me feel a little better about how i did. (this scale out of 9 lol). bc like. i did better than them at least!!#felt a lil bad for today's presenter. she was clearly getting kind of frazzled. it rly is hard to present for an hour.#we write out critiques for every presentation. stuff we liked and stuff we didnt. unfortunately i had criticisms to give 😔#but i try to sandwich it with good things too. so it's not All bad things. i still feel bad critiquing them #but such is the review expectations. i try to at least be fair about it.#(to clarify. grades arent announced to the class. i just sit right up front near where he puts the papers and im Nosy lol)

It's the end of the semester for your girl and she somehow pulled through with zero non-passing grades; please clap and cheer.

#I was absent for the final assignment for my Makeup class but I passed anyway because the professor is a champ.#I got full marks on my Voice midterm.#I got a 9/10 in Acting class and very nice feedback #(side note: I think the prof thought I was about to cry because my face twitched with the exertion of making an appropriate facial #expression because I was scared of looking ungrateful. I hate responding to compliments)#about how he really likes how I work but feels there's a slice of my range I haven't explored yet.#He doesn't know what it is but the clue he gave me was 'I think it's dark'.#Anyway Actoral Training was an 8/10 for all of us because we only had three classes after the professor changed.#I retook my Dramatic Literature exam and got a 100% but since I initially got a 20% it averaged at 60%.#I think I'll get a 7/10 overall for class participation.#Theories of Perception is a ?/10 but since I'm positive I at least passed the exam and I have class participation I know it's good.#And Movement was a 9/10 for reasons unknown to me given that I handed in my report way late.#Anyway. A good semester academically if we ignore the fact that I got those grades at the last possible second with immeasurable stress.#l33chsp34k

I don't think that kids should be exclusively homeschooled, but I also don't think that kids should be going to a building with hundreds of people 5 days a week during a pandemic. It's one of the main reasons why it keeps spreading so rapidly and won't go away. They don't take any preventative measures at schools anymore (at least not around here). You got kids? You're getting sick. Your coworker has kids? You're getting sick.

Schools are back to counting attendance. You can't even keep your kid home long enough to recover from covid before sending them back. They literally send a "truancy" (police) officer to your house if you keep them home too often.

I feel like we could be doing something better. I'm not entirely sure what the solution is. But this isn't it.

#.bdo #I tried homeschooling 3 kids at the beginning of the pandemic my ADHD is way too bad for that #this doesn't even touch on how I think the modern public school system needs to be abolished and rebuilt #the kids don't get enough breaks bullying isn't properly addressed the history they teach them is biased and/or outdated #attendance policies are ableist and classist and a fuck #PE shouldn't be something you're graded on and exercises should be given based on the individual child's abilities and needs #there should be more counselors and actual child psychologists in the building #school breakfast and lunches should always be free for every kid (thankfully they started doing that here in my town a year ago)#there should be different times of the day you can drop your kid off instead of one set starting time and one ending time #to work with different people's work and sleeping schedules #kids should not be required to be at school before 9 am but we have schools starting between 6:50am-7:20am now #my school years would have been 10000% easier if I could have started at 11am instead #kids need to be met at their level instead of forcing the same curriculum on everyone #MORE TEACHERS! More than one per classroom! Why are we making one person watch 30 kids at once!#this needs to be a whole separate post but I needed to get this rant out now
