‘Fragile Microbiomes’ by bio-artist Anna Dumitriu

1. SYPHILIS DRESS- This dress is embroidered with images of the corkscrew-shaped bacterium which causes the sexually transmitted disease syphilis. These embroideries are impregnated with the sterilised DNA of the Nichols strain of the bacterium - Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum - which Dumitriu extracted with her collaborators.

2. MICROBE MOUTH- The tooth at the centre of this necklace was grown in the lab using an extremophile bacterium which is part of the species called Serratia (Serratia N14) that can produce hydroxyapatite, the same substance that tooth enamel is made from.

The handmade porcelain teeth that make up this necklace have been coated with glazes derived from various bacterial species that live in our mouths and cause tooth decay and gum disease, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, which can introduce an iron-containing light brown stain to the glaze.

3. TEETH MARKS: THE MOST PROFOUND MYSTERY- In his 1845 essay “On Artificial Teeth��, W.H. Mortimer described false teeth as “the most profound mystery” because they were never discussed. Instead, people would hide the stigma of bad teeth and foul breath using fans.

This altered antique fan is made from animal bone and has been mended with gold wire, both materials historically used to construct false teeth (which would also sometimes incorporate human teeth). The silk of the fan and ribbon has been grown and patterned with two species of oral pathogens: Prevotella intermedia and Porphyromonas gingivalis. These bacteria cause gum disease and bad breath, and the latter has also recently been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

4. PLAGUE DRESS- This 1665-style 'Plague Dress' is made from raw silk, hand-dyed with walnut husks in reference to the famous herbalist of the era Nicholas Culpeper, who recommended walnuts as a treatment for plague. It has been appliquéd with original 17th-century embroideries, impregnated with the DNA of Yersinia pestis bacteria (plague). The artist extracted this from killed bacteria in the laboratory of the National Collection of Type Cultures at the UK Health Security Agency.

The dress is stuffed and surrounded by lavender, which people carried during the Great Plague of London to cover the stench of infection and to prevent the disease, which was believed to be caused by 'bad air' or 'miasmas'. The silk of the dress references the Silk Road, a key vector for the spread of plague.

5. BACTERIAL BAPTISM- based on a vintage christening gown which has been altered by the artist to tell the story of research into how the microbiomes of babies develop, with a focus on the bacterium Clostridioides difficile, originally discovered by Hall and O’Toole in 1935 and presented in their paper “Intestinal flora in new-born infants”. It was named Bacillus difficilis because it was difficult to grow, and in the 1970s it was recognised as causing conditions from mild antibiotic-associated diarrhoea to life-threatening intestinal inflammation. The embroidery silk is dyed using stains used in the study of the gut microbiome and the gown is decorated with hand-crocheted linen lace grown in lab with (sterilised) C. difficile biofilms. The piece also considers how new-borns become colonised by bacteria during birth in what has been described as ‘bacterial baptism’.

6. ZENEXTON- Around 1570, Swiss physician and alchemist Theophrastus Paracelsus coined the term ‘Zenexton’, meaning an amulet worn around the neck to protect from the plague. Until then, amulets had a more general purpose of warding off (unspecified) disease, rather like the difference today between ‘broad spectrum’ antibiotics and antibiotics informed by genomics approaches which target a specific organism.

Over the next century, several ideas were put forward as to what this amulet might contain: a paste made of powdered toads, sapphires that would turn black when they leeched the pestilence from the body, or menstrual blood. Bizarre improvements were later made: “of course, the toad should be finely powdered”; “the menstrual blood from a virgin”; “collected on a full moon”.

This very modern Zenexton has been 3D printed and offers the wearer something that genuinely protects: the recently developed vaccine against Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague.

Are we ready to have an honest discussion about Will and El’s dynamic and possible ending yet?

Two characters sharing a similar narrative in this story. How will things end for these two?

It hasn’t occurred to me until recently just how little we discuss these two.

Over the course of the show, the development of Will and El’s co-existence has less to do with their relationship but more to do with Will’s character arc.

In the beginning (seasons 1 and 2), Will is so hidden that El takes over. Will “hides” in the upside down, and is again hidden when he is possessed. El takes the spotlight in his place.

Then in season 3, Will is physically present but in the background. He’s the side character. El is the leader. They barely interact.

In season 4, Will is starting to come out of his shell. He’s still a side character, but he’s closer to being on an even playing field with El. He’s not in the background as often, and is actually seen conversing with El, and he even confronts her on her lies to Mike. Which is also foreshadowing his lies to Mike later on in the season.

I’m going to be quite frank: El and Will are not actually very close in canon. The “wonder twins” idea is beautiful but very fanon. These two had so many opportunities to grow closer, especially since they were separated from the others in California… but they just don’t? They both seem lonely and disconnected in the other’s presence. But yet, they are connected another way: El is Will’s saviour/protector. She is like his security blanket. I mean this literally (textually), and a sub-textually. Obviously she helps him while he’s trapped in the upside down and when he’s possessed- making her a textual, and literal saviour.

But… what do I mean by a sub-textual saviour? Well, she protects him from having to take the spotlight. He is able to hide behind her in many ways.

For one, she takes the brunt of the bullies in Lenora. Will is able to go around unnoticed even as a GNC guy that he is. Back home at Hawkins, he is, unfortunately, very visible to bullies. Visibly different, visibly gay. But in Lenora? Bullies are too distracted by the girl who’s different instead.

Now when it comes to Will’s love life… El also is protecting him in a sense. He desires Mike, romantically, sexually, and intimately. Due to the rampant homophobia that surrounds him, these desires scare him. El is a safe barrier from these desires. Will is also able to safely express himself through her.

If El weren’t in the picture, Will may have been more bold in expressing this side of himself to Mike. He may just let his feelings slip out more. Perhaps he’d let his eyes linger a tad longer, or he’d be tempted to be a bit more tactile with the boy he’s overflowing with affection for.

El shields Will from having to confront many aspects of himself. That’s the problem. Because of her protection, he isn’t able to challenge himself and grow. This is why whenever El saves the day, it never lasts. She merely puts a “bandaid” on the wound. But this wound will grow and fester if the source of the problem is not addressed.

El’s Possible Origin

This is the first time in the entire show that El is mentioned. The context of this sounds like they’re implying that El also “came from” the upsidedown; precisely where Will was at the time.

Now, I’m aware this is a fairly unpopular opinion, but I do believe El was created from Will in a supernatural sense. I suppose in a similar way to how Eve was created from Adam, minus any romantic undertones.

Our very first sighting of El is of her emerging from the forest, barefoot, in a hospital gown, with very little hair on her head, and a limited knowledge of the English language. Not unlike an infant child. Now, please don’t take this the wrong way… I’m not implying that everyone with limited language skills are babies, there are many possible reasons for it. But within this show, it is implied that her lack of language skills are due to her experiences within the lab, and lack of experiences outside of it.

I do have to ask though, why do the other “lab kids” we have seen have no obvious language difficulties? Unless… El actually was an “infant” in a way…

This quote is interesting for multiple reasons. One I’m focusing on here is the mention of life starting that particular day. Of course I’m not referring to Mike’s life starting that day- I’m talking about the person we are shown in this particular shot- El.

Now, I know what everyone is thinking: how does El have memories that predate this day then?

Well, what I’m arguing is that many of her memories could be an altered version of Will’s memories. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that his memories could have been transferred to El.

This “fake” script of the episode Papa tells us that Will recognized Brenner. There’s a history there! Will likely could not quite pinpoint how he recognized him.

It’s important to note that Will only vaguely recalls aspects of his childhood. There’s gaps. Just like there’s gaps in El’s memory as well.

El’s Possible Ending

I’ve always been surprised just how little people dig into El’s possible ending in the show. I feel like people are somewhat aware of this possibility but choose not to give it any further thought. Truth is- El doesn’t feel like she belongs anywhere.

I need to remind everyone of this last shot in ST4. Yes yes the couples, we have heard it a million times already… but look where El is standing. She’s on the other side. She’s in the upsidedown. Where she initially came from. Now, I’m not saying she’ll end up in the current unpleasant upsidedown- she will likely live on in a peaceful version of it. An entirely new environment one that exists…

I do think this is an important foreshadowing quote- but not in the way most people think. They won’t work together as twins- they will work together as one person. What I’m saying is…

They will combine. Just like what this hug visually foreshadows… El and Will will become one again.

Ok so a part of the NtN epilogue that has always bugged me is how Alecto very specifically doesn't know who Harrow is until she bites kisses her and tastes her blood

Which on its own wouldn't necessarily mean much, except that Harrow is shown repeatedly to look almost exactly like Anastasia, and Alecto-in-her-aspect-as-Nona is shown to be very observant and aware of physical features. It's not, like, a vision issue, after waking up Alecto immediately recognizes Pyrrha, and knows the general features of Harrow i.e. "black-eyed infant". And in her aspect as Nona, she is keenly observant of physical features. She waxes poetic about all the little ways Honesty and Pyrrha's red hair differs from Kiriona's, and more than that, she immediately recognizes Kiriona's corpse as the girl from her dream. So why doesn't she recognize Harrow?

The other Lyctors recognize Harrow. The first thing Augustine says upon meeting her is: "Harrowhark the First—ninth saint, then, looking at you I can tell that’s appropriate", and then in the same scene he calls her "Anastasia come again." Mercymorn insults her ("You're not as pretty as Anastasia") but in that insult, she again emphasizes the physical similarity between Harrow and Anastasia. These statements are way more significant when you remember in this scene, Harrow has just woken up after travel through the River, and is still wearing a hospital gown. no black vestments, no Ninth Aesthetics, the only things really "Ninth" about her are her physical features.

And the first thing Alecto does after she realizes that Harrow is Anastasia's blood is to apologize about Samael and reiterate her "vow", which she specifically did not remember until after she remembered Anastasia.

So like. What does this mean? I cannot help but have a feeling that this relates to blood wards being broken by the blood of a relative, the Ninth House being the House of the Sewn Tongue, and the established fact that necromancy can fuck with memory and perception. I guess I had always assumed the original "sewn tongue" referred to Anastasia but like what if it referred to Alecto? And the established blood ward (the Tomb) could only be spoofed by a close relative (because John wouldn't program it to let anyone but himself in), but theoretically what is stopping Anastasia from whipping up a theorem for a blood ward that simply requires any kind of direct genetic link? Why would Alecto have forgotten her vows, how does this relate to Samael, why was she swearing allegiance to Anastasia? If she was made to forget because that vow was a secret, who was it kept secret from (John, presumably), and why, and how will this impact Alecto's motivations and actions in the next book? John seemed happy/relieved to see Alecto when she woke him up via sword-to-the-chest, but the Alecto he put to sleep (presumably) didn't remember her vows to Anastasia, and the Alecto who stabs him does, and what could this mean? How does this all connect to Anastasia's bones being nestled by the Rock on the inside of the tomb? Did Anastasia have a long term plan, or was she just hoping that the next time Alecto woke up that things would be Different? What could she possibly have hoped or assumed would have changed in that interim time? How does this connect to Alecto calling out for Anastasia right before John leads her into the Tomb? What HAPPENED between Anastasia and Alecto, and John, and Samael, and—(I am pulled off stage with a large hook)

After hours of labor and the intense emotions that followed, you’ve finally had some much-needed rest. The room is quieter now, and the soft hum of medical equipment is the only sound breaking the stillness. You lie in the hospital bed, exhausted but feeling a sense of profound relief and accomplishment.

Rafe sits beside you, cradling your baby girl in his arms. His gaze is full of tenderness as he gently rocks the sleeping infant, her tiny breaths rising and falling with a peaceful rhythm. The sight of him caring for your daughter with such devotion brings a wave of mixed emotions—comfort from his presence, and anxiety about what’s to come.

Your mum is allowed back into the room, her expression a mix of remorse and hope. She steps in quietly, her eyes scanning the room before landing on Rafe and the baby. The silence is palpable as she approaches.

Rafe looks up, startled by her reappearance. “Oh, hi,” he says, trying to maintain a calm demeanor. “The baby’s asleep right now. Maybe it’s best to talk to Y/n first before holding her.”

Your mum nods, her face showing a flicker of understanding. “Of course,” she replies, her voice soft and cautious.

Rafe turns to you, gently rubbing your shoulder to rouse you from your sleep. You stir slowly, your eyes fluttering open to see Rafe’s concerned face. The presence of your mum in the room adds a layer of tension, and you feel a surge of anxiety about the conversation that’s about to unfold.

“Hey,” Rafe says softly, “I think your mum wants to talk. Are you okay?”

You nod, your throat tight with apprehension. “Yeah, I’m okay,” you reply, sitting up slowly. You see your mum standing at the foot of the bed, her eyes filled with a mix of guilt and hope.

“Y/n,” she starts, her voice trembling slightly. “I’m so sorry for everything that happened. I didn’t mean for things to get so complicated.”

You take a deep breath, trying to steady yourself. “I understand, Mum,” you say softly. “It’s been a lot for everyone. What do you want to say?”

Your mum steps closer, her eyes fixed on the baby in Rafe’s arms. "When I asked you to be my surrogate, I didn’t fully understand the impact it would have on your relationship with Rafe," she begins, her voice strained with regret.

"I shouldn’t have pressured you into sleeping with him that day. I realize now that having someone as young as Rafe, and making him a stepdad while he's so close in age, was a mistake."

You’re at a loss for words, your gaze darting between your mum and Rafe, unsure of where this conversation is headed. Your mum’s disappointment is palpable as she continues.

"I’ve decided that I cannot be involved in raising this baby. She is yours and Rafe’s responsibility now. I refuse to be part of this situation. I don’t want anything to do with either of you or the baby. You’re both selfish, and I can’t be associated with this."

Her words are a punch to the gut. Your jaw drops in shock, unable to respond. The emotional weight of her declaration leaves you speechless.

Rafe, who has been standing beside you, finally speaks up, his voice tinged with a mix of anger and hurt. "What are you talking about? You just said it was your fault for all of this. I’m sorry that I fell for your daughter, but I do love her. If you feel this way, then I don’t want you around my daughter either."

The tension in the room escalates as Rafe’s words hang in the air. Your mum’s face hardens, and she moves to sit in the other chair, clearly upset. The atmosphere is charged with unresolved emotions.

As the silence settles, a nurse enters the room, her presence a welcome distraction. "It's time for the baby to feed," she announces softly, moving towards you with a practiced ease.

She begins to help you remove your top gown, her movements gentle but purposeful. You feel a wave of vulnerability as she takes the baby from Rafe’s arms and places her in your lap. The baby, now nestled against you, starts to nuzzle, but struggles to latch on properly.

The nurse notices the difficulty and gently guides your hand to your breast, encouraging you to stimulate it to help the milk flow. You wince as you try, the discomfort evident in your expression. "It hurts," you admit, your voice trembling slightly.

Rafe, sensing your distress, steps in to offer support. He moves closer and places his fingers around your nipple, attempting to stimulate it and help with the milk flow. His touch is tender, but you still find it uncomfortable.

The nurse, seeing your struggle, offers another suggestion. "Sometimes, it can help to try and suck on your nipple a little to get things started for the baby."

You nod, feeling a mix of embarrassment and relief as Rafe, following the nurse's advice, carefully tries to help with the process. 

The baby continues to fidget in your arms, and you concentrate on the nurse's calming instructions. Rafe, sensing the urgency, moves closer and begins to suck on your nipple gently. As he does so, the baby’s instinctive feeding responses begin to take hold. Carefully, he lifts her head to your breast, and she finally latches on.

The initial sensation is sharp, and you grunt in discomfort as the baby starts to suck. The pain is intense, causing tears to spill down your cheeks. Rafe, ever attentive, immediately reaches over to gently wipe them away, his touch warm and reassuring.

The nurse continues to offer words of support. "It will hurt for the first few times, but you'll adjust. You’ve got a great daddy here to help you out," she says with a smile and leaves the room.

Rafe’s smile reflects his commitment and affection, his eyes meeting yours with a mixture of tenderness and resolve. As you try to focus on the baby and the nurse’s advice, you glance around the room to distract yourself from the pain. Your eyes land on your mother, who is watching you with a look of clear disgust.

Feeling her gaze and the growing tension, you ask, "What are you looking at?"

Your mother’s expression hardens as she responds sharply, "You two seem really together. How long has this been going on? Did you plan this from the start?"

Her accusation cuts through the room, adding to the emotional strain of the moment. Rafe’s face flushes with a mix of embarrassment and anger, and he looks to you for guidance, unsure how to handle the confrontation.

You’re overwhelmed by the emotions of the moment and the exhaustion of labor, unsure how to respond to your mother’s pointed question. After a moment of gathering your thoughts, you speak up with a mix of sincerity and resignation.

"I never planned to fall in love with Rafe," you begin, your voice trembling slightly but steady.

"It just happened after we slept together. He’s been incredibly caring and supportive throughout this whole journey. When I struggled with pregnancy cravings and everything else, he was always there to help in any way he could."

You take a deep breath, trying to steady yourself. "So to answer your question, no, I didn’t plan to fall for him. But when you spend eight months with someone and share such an intense experience, feelings can develop. I’m sorry that this situation has been difficult for you, but you can’t help who you fall for."

Your mother’s expression softens slightly as she hears your words, She walks out, her anger leaving a chilling silence in her wake. 

You’re left staring at Rafe, feeling a mix of confusion, sadness, and relief. Rafe moves closer to you, wrapping his arms around you and the baby.

"We’ll figure this out," Rafe says softly, his voice steady despite the chaos. "We have each other, and we’ll make sure our daughter has everything she needs. I love you Y/n!”

i spent about 5 minutes tearing up laughing in the kitchen imagining a pub called The Stimulated Prostate to the point where i couldnt move but eventually found my way to my room where i realised i had accidentally tied an advanced one-way adjustable knot on my dressing gown and while attempting to untie it, proceded to hear two cats fighting loud as fuck the loudest ive ever heard 2 cats fight one screamed like an infant baby, and by the end i still hadnt got the knot untied. and also i spewed about 20 minutes before all this. its 2am
